To many gamers, Sonic the Hedgehogs coming to the X BOX 360 was initially like a match made in heaven. With the X BOX power and Sonics popularity, there was nothing that could go wrong. The game play was challenging though. The controls were far from simple and the third dimension added a lot of unforeseen complexities and difficulties. The game involved Sonic traveling over different terrains in different vehicles. There was the buggy like vehicle that was fitted with machine guns and also a hang glider and a hovercraft.

The storyline was interesting and fun to play. The entire game was played in three parts within one main character in each part. So it started with Sonic, then came Shadow the Hedgehog and then a brand new character was introduced to the game Silver the Hedgehog. Silver has a new ability he can pick and throw objects at his enemies. He is slower than Sonic but he is able to travel over a greater distance than Sonic, which is a very interesting addition.

All the new additions to the game are almost destroyed by the pathetically slow load times. The camera angles are also not up to the mark and definitely need some tweaking.

Even through all that, the game is able to hold its own within a tough and demanding market.

In a statement that surprised gamers and non-gamers alike, Peter Moore of Microsoft Xbox, endorsed Nintendo's new Wii console. Speculations circulated whether this statement by Moore was a genuine praise or a calculated move designed to offset the launch of Sony PlayStation 3. Moore even referred to himself as a big fan of the Nintendo console. He suggested that for the price of a PS3, gamers would be able to get a new Xbox 360 plus a Nintendo Wii, with some leftover for a few games. It can be recalled that Sony pegged the price of their new PlayStation at $499-$599, a price the company claimed to be fit for a Blu-ray console.

This move by Microsoft seemed to be another tactic to push the Xbox 360 sales higher with the imminent release of the PS3 at its heels. Peter Moore was downplaying the viability of the PS3 by pointing out the only disadvantage of the new Sony console: its price. But Moore's reason was not only consumer concern. Moore's statement also implied that Microsoft do not see Nintendo as direct threat and competitor. Perhaps he thought that having Nintendo's support would clearly buoy Microsoft's sales. Moore was right to do so in this case, since ugly numbers were cropping up in sales reviews of the Microsoft consoles.

The marketing and research firm, NPD Group supplied numbers and reports that indicated that the prized console of Microsoft lagged behind the PS2 in terms of hardware sales. Launched half a decade ago, Sony's PlayStation 2 still lets its presence be felt at the game console market. The five-year old Sony console even managed to exceed the sales of the then-brand new Xbox 360 especially in the month of May. The next-gen console sold only 221,000 units; 11,000 units less than the PS2 sales. Though Microsoft retaliated quickly by revamping shipment processes and adding a third manufacturer for its console, it wasn't enough to draw considerable margin between their sales and that of PS2.

But even if the move didn't suffice, it somewhat improved Xbox 360 console sales. Succeeding sales reviews showed that the sales of the console picked up; the influx of consoles ensuring amply supply and brisk sales. But the PS3 was touted to be a bigger threat. It didn't help either that Sony's processing systems have improved since the release of the PS2. Clearly, it became imperative for Microsoft to beef up its marketing operation to ensure their new console's top position within the next-gen hierarchy.

In conclusion, Microsoft's marketing plan included Peter Moore banking on Sony's overly-inflated ego that expected gaming fans to shell out big bucks for the PS3. Moore targeted the rival console's price when he made that statement about Xbox 360 and the Wii console. He also hoped to draw in Nintendo fans over to the Microsoft side by actively endorsing the Wii. If Nintendo approves Moore's tactic, the next-gen console battle will be a two versus one fight. Another tell-tale sign of Microsoft and Moore's pricing attack at Sony's new console was the reported price slash for Xbox 360 consoles during the holidays. The price slash was clearly planned to coincide with Sony's PS3 launch. However, the affirmation if Peter Moore's tactic worked still rests on gamers' shoulders.

Xbox 360 Mod Chip - What Is It And Should You Buy One?

As a serious gamer myself, I love to see games before they hit our shores here in North America. But more than that, I am always looking for the hottest and most unique games I can get my hands on. Unfortunately, many of those games just don't come to our side of the ocean from Japan. Typically, since the days of the original Nintendo NES, Japanese gamers have enjoyed much more unique and often times much better games than their North American Counter Parts. I've been very fortunate to be able to play many of these Japanese games while I was living in Japan, but when I returned back home to Canada, I simply could not find many of the games that I had played with such pleasure while in Japan. So I searched and researched and found exactly what I needed to be able to just put those Japanese games into game console and really start playing again. What I found was a Mod Chip, for my Playstation console. And I've been using mod chips ever since then. Having most recently purchased and installed my Xbox 360 Mod Chip into my system - and I've got games from Japan on the way.

So Just what IS a mod chip? Let me explain. A modification chip or mod chip is a device used to play import, backup, or home brew games. Mod Chips first came into "fame" when die hard, hard core gamers who were tired of the slim offerings that were made available for them in the USA, wanted to get their hands on the often better and more unique Japanese games that were coming out for their game console. This is nothing new, even the Nintendo NES has a device that allowed gamers to plug Japanese Famicom cartridges into their USA NES system so that they could play those really unique Japanese games, or the latest Mario offering that was only available (or came out much sooner) in Japan.

Mod chips are available for all the major video game consoles, including the Xbox 360, Xbox, Sony PSP, PlayStation, Playstation 2 and GameCube. Almost all modern console gaming systems have hardware-based schemes which ensure that only officially sanctioned games may be used with the system and implement regional lockout similar to the scheme used in DVD movies. The specific technical nature of these DRM systems varies by system, and may include cryptographic signing (Xbox), intentionally unreadable sectors (PlayStation, Sega Saturn), custom optical media (GameCube, Dreamcast), or some combination thereof. Modchips are available also for some DVD players, to defeat region code enforcement and user operation prohibitions.

As console systems got better and better, a whole following of home brew developers starting making their own software for their consoles. Software like the Xbox Media Center (XMBC) as well as their own little games and programs to stream video and audio. But in order to play / run this software, users are required to be able to load unsigned / home brew code onto their system. This is where mod chips come in. Not only do they allow you to play the latest game offerings from Japan, which as stated earlier, are often much better both graphically and in the way of originality than the games that are for the North American market.

As with any new system, and the new mod chips that first come out - we're always hit with loads of "compatibility" issues. Much like when the ps2 mod chip first came out, they had chips (different chips) for each "version" of the ps2 console. And the Xbox 360 mod chips are no exception. The very first chips that came out were for very specific "versions" of the XBox 360. First it was a mod chip for the Samsung drives .. Which means that if your XBox 360 had a samsung DVD drive, then you needed to buy an Xbox 360 mod chip that worked on the SAMSUNG drive, to bypass the current firmware.

Then the Team Underdog chip came out, this chip had 2 versions. One for the samsung drives, and another one for the LG/Hitachi Drives. So again, you were "stuck" having to find out exactly which Xbox 360 you had, in order to select the right chip for your console.

Now, as with most developments in the mod chip manufacturing world, eventually, some very smart programmers and developers finally get it right. Naturally, it is common sense to assume that customers would be much more likely to buy a mod chip for their Xbox 360 is they could do away with the "version" checking, and buy a chip that they KNOW will work in their Xbox 360 console... Of course, when they take it apart after receiving their chip, they WILL have to find out which model they have so they can use the right installation directions - but they don't have to fret or worry that the chip they have purchased may NOT be compatible with their XBox 360.

Much like any product, customers want the peace of mind of knowing that what they are buying will simply just WORK, and in the case of mod chips, will work in their Xbox 360 console regardless of the version of the Xbox 360 that they purchased.

To sum it up, if you have an Xbox 360, then you should really consider getting an Xbox 360 mod chip. Not only will you be able to protect your expensive investments by making backup copies of your own original games, and putting the originals away for safe keeping, but you'll also open up a whole new world of games that you simply would not be able to play otherwise. There are truly very unique (and playable) Japanese games that we'll simply never see otherwise. And if home brew or cool utilities, applications or add-ons are your thing, then having a mod chip is an absolute must.

Step #1 - Turn Off Everything except Power Source

The current generation of game consoles is a market contested by three systems. Microsoft's Xbox 360, which was released in November 2005, Nintendo's Wii, due for release in November 2006, and the Sony PS3, also set to release in North America and Japan in November 06. This is a short guide for consumers interested in a comparison of the PS3 vs Xbox 360.

The two systems are remarkably similar in several ways. They both ship in two different lines, a Basic and a Premium version, and in both cases, the main difference between the two lines for each is the size of the hard drive. In the case of Xbox, the Core version does not have one, while the Premium system comes with a removable 20 GB hard drive. In the case of the PS3, the Basic edition has a 20 GB hard drive, and the Premium comes with a 60 GB drive. Given the similarities of the two lines for each system, from here on we shall just compare the premium version of both systems.

Microsoft's second console, the Xbox 360, is Internet-capable by standard 100 Mb ethernet port, has a relatively advanced on board Operating System (OS), features a triple-cored CPU for parallel processing, allowing a different processor to focus exclusively on different aspects of each game, has a powerful on-board graphics accelerator with an ATI GPU, has 5.1 surround sound support, DVD playback functionality, interfaces with an online matchmaking and multiplayer service, namely, Xbox Live, and with a software update, will support the HDTV progressive video resolution of 1920x1080 (AKA, 1080p).

The system also has 3 USB 2.0 ports, which allow users to plug in additional peripherals, such as the Xbox Live Vision Camera, and wireless network adaptor. There is support for both wired and wireless controllers. Microsoft has also announced it will release an external Xbox HD-DVD drive for users who desire next-generation disk format support.

The Xbox 360 ships with emulation software that allows users to play some original Xbox games on the new console. The results vary significantly, however, and a compatibility profile must first be released on a game-by-game basis via Xbox Live, before users can use old games. In some cases, the older games are able to take advantage of the significantly more powerful hardware available to them and will actually play better than on the original system. IT is hard to describe the difference between HD DVD and regular DVD because DVD is already so crisp and clean. The differences are not nearly as obvious as the step up from standard definition to DVD. While DVDs look sharp, crisp, and accurate, and HD DVD looks warm and natural. The pixilation has a reach such a high level that you the images a literally completely smooth and natural looking. It is impossible to imagine, but when you see it you will understand the value. Similar to how movies in the theater look so lifelike, this is how HD DVD looks. The best thing is that this is fully controllable from the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, but look to my Xbox 360 wireless adapter review for more information on that.

The Second Part Of The Xbox 360 VGA Review – Games

The games on the Xbox 360 are amazing. The reason for this is that the processors inside the Xbox are fully dedicated to graphics processing and have no heavy operating system to maintain. The system is designed so that the unit is just a massive graphics processor. This shows in the lifelike animation in game play and in the trailers. Halo 3 was a launch title and it and Gears of War are probably two of the best games I have ever seen on any system anywhere – PC, Playstation, Wii, whatever these blow those out of the water. After I set it up I saw the Xbox 360 is a far cry from its predecessor. The original Xbox was big, black and boxy looking. The new unit is anything but. It is far smaller, although not as small as the Wii or Playstation, and white in color. For the first part of the Xbox 360 console review I give it a 4 out of 5 for appearance.

While appearance for some people is important, if you are a serious gamer then this is the least important thing. So let’s take a look into the next part of the Xbox 360 console review and look at the titles that are available. This is not an Xbox 360 game review, but rather a look at the games you can get. The first thing that stands out for this Xbox 360 console review is that the Xbox is the only system that you can get Halo for. While it has been made available for the PC, the game play on the console is far superior. The Halo series is perhaps my favorite of all time and this is a big plus in favor of the Xbox. While the single player is fun, this game truly shines with the multiplayer options, but I will get into that in the next section. For game titles I give the Xbox 360 console review a 4 out of 5.

The next thing that is really important when you get a gaming is system is the multi player options. The original Xbox blew its competition out of the water, and while Playstation and the Wii are catching up the Xbox 360 is still leading the pack. You can find games easily; get content, and almost all of the games released for the system offer multiplayer support. The score for its multi player is a 5 out of 5. I find it hard to believe that they could improve on this much.

The Xbox 360 in my mind is the best system if you are looking for online action. Without even looking at the graphics or doing an Xbox 360 VGA review it shines. It does not have the fun aspect of the Wii and most of the games are more adult in flavor. The Wii owns the market in fun, interactive games. For non online adult games the Playstation 3 might have a slight edge, but if it does it is very slight and the Xbox 360 can keep up with in almost every regard.

The Playstation comes with Blue Ray native on the unit. This was the format that is going to be the industry standard so for this the Playstation is clearly ahead of the Xbox. The Wii does not come with High Definition DVD playback ability, so the Xbox surpasses it in this area. As far as playback quality, HD DVD is the superior format but again Blue Ray appears to be the industry choice so while the Xbox beats at the Wii, it fails to beat the Playstation.

An Xbox 360 console review

Right now there are three major gaming consoles on the market for you to choose from – the Nintendo Wii, the Playstation 3, and the Xbox 360. I have tested and written about both the Wii and the Playstation, so now it is time for an Xbox 360 console review.

Xbox 360 – A Complete Look

After I set it up I saw the Xbox 360 is a far cry from its predecessor. The original Xbox was big, black and boxy looking. The new unit is anything but. It is far smaller, although not as small as the Wii or Playstation, and white in color. For the first part of the Xbox 360 console review I give it a 4 out of 5 for appearance.

While appearance for some people is important, if you are a serious gamer then this is the least important thing. So let’s take a look into the next part of the Xbox 360 console review and look at the titles that are available. This is not an Xbox 360 game review, but rather a look at the games you can get. The first thing that stands out for this Xbox 360 console review is that the Xbox is the only system that you can get Halo for. While it has been made available for the PC, the game play on the console is far superior. The Halo series is perhaps my favorite of all time and this is a big plus in favor of the Xbox. While the single player is fun, this game truly shines with the multiplayer options, but I will get into that in the next section. For game titles I give the Xbox 360 console review a 4 out of 5.

The next thing that is really important when you get a gaming is system is the multi player options. The original Xbox blew its competition out of the water, and while Playstation and the Wii are catching up the Xbox 360 is still leading the pack. You can find games easily; get content, and almost all of the games released for the system offer multiplayer support. The score for its multi player is a 5 out of 5. I find it hard to believe that they could improve on this much.

The Xbox 360 in my mind is the best system if you are looking for online action. Without even looking at the graphics or doing an Xbox 360 VGA review it shines. It does not have the fun aspect of the Wii and most of the games are more adult in flavor. The Wii owns the market in fun, interactive games. For non online adult games the Playstation 3 might have a slight edge, but if it does it is very slight and the Xbox 360 can keep up with in almost every regard.

I have taken a look at several different components of the Xbox 360 and now it is time for an Xbox 360 HD DVD review. What I would like to do in this Xbox 360 HD DVD review is take a look at what the current Xbox offers versus its competition and previous units. The first part of the Xbox 360 HD DVD review will compare and contrast the unit with the previous one, while the second part of the Xbox 360 HD DVD review will look at it versus the Wii and Playstation 3. Original Xbox Versus The Xbox 360 HD DVD Review

On the old Xbox you had the option of converting the unit into a DVD player. In order to do this you had to purchase a separate component that plugged into one of the control slot. There were a couple things that were really bad about this. First off was that although all the games for the Xbox were DVDs you could not read regular DVDs out of the box. IN addition when the DVD player was running you had to take one of the controller spots up so that you could not readily and easily switch between four players and DVD mode. That being said, the add on was not that expensive and it was fairly easy to switch and allow you to go into game mode.

Microsoft addressed these issues out of the box and the Xboxes are now able to read DVDs. The only real negative is while they can read regular DVDs, the HD DVD format is going by the wayside and is being taken over by blue ray. This threatens to leave this component of the Xbox in the dust and we will have to see what Microsoft does to address this issue.

Playstation, Wii Versus The Xbox 360 HD DVD Review

The Playstation comes with Blue Ray native on the unit. This was the format that is going to be the industry standard so for this the Playstation is clearly ahead of the Xbox. The Wii does not come with High Definition DVD playback ability, so the Xbox surpasses it in this area. As far as playback quality, HD DVD is the superior format but again Blue Ray appears to be the industry choice so while the Xbox beats at the Wii, it fails to beat the Playstation.
