Hi all. It's been a long time since I posted but I have some good news.

I plan to get back into this a bit with new Warhammer 40k modeling projects round the corner and some holiday coming up. I've also got 10 days free of Warhammer online to have a go at on my Mac.

The Sky is Falling?

If you read some of the other Warhammer Online blogs you'd be forgiven for thinking the sky is falling. Some have given up openly, thrown in the towel or said a fond fairwell, where as others have just faded away or gone on to other games.

To some degree I don't blame them, the game isn't perfect (what is?) and there are improvements but I still enjoy playing it so I'll keep on blogging. The only snag for me is that my PC is playing up, switching itself off at random so I'm just not able to play at the moment. I have an i-Mac (which I'm using for this post) so if Mythic would kindly make there game work on a Mac that would be great.

I'll keep blogging probably more about Warhammer and 40k for now but hopefully I'll be back online soon.

The Captains WCPI - Gaarawarr Gabs

This is just a quick post to point out some epic posts on Gaarawarrs great blog.

Gaarawarr has twice done every PQ in a pairing. The first run was a couple of weeks ago through the Empire lands and then he did it again along with some others through all of the high Elf PQ's.

The event was advertised on several forums and a group was formed to complete the task. I wish I could have taken part as it looks and sounds like great fun.

Beyond the Sands Live Event a Conclusion in Pictures

Rather than just write my final thoughts on the event I thought I'd put some screen shots in to Illustrate my feelings.

The source of my Frustration with the event, the Tier 3 depo right on the doorstep of the destruction Warcamp.

finishing all of the tasks in a Live event for the first time.

The conclusion, this event had fun quests and rewards as well as a great story running through. I vented my frustrations on Saturday and threw myself back into the event on Sunday completing the final tasks with the help of a fantastically named Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies.

It was this co-operation along with a few others later on that increased my enjoyment and let me forget some of the issues I'd had with the event previously. Thanks Suicidal :-)

Beyond the Sands - My Thoughts

So the live event is pretty close to being over and I've spotted others talking about there thoughts on it and wanted to give my point of view.

As I'm still only rank 30 on Astellerol I ended up doing all of the quests in the badlands (Tier 3). Great, I thought I'm top level for the teir so this should be of some advantage but this wasn't really the case. Unforrtunatly for some insane reason the 'Depo' in Badlands is right on the doorstep to the destruction warcamp. This made trying ot do any quests as an Order player infinatly more difficult as the destruction players could just nip out of their warcamp to see if anyone was around which most of the time therre was and pick them off.

This wouldn't have been to bad except for a number of the tasks you had to interact with objects that took 5 seconds to activate, kill the sentinal skeletons, and speak to a certain dark elf (That never spawned anyway!)

I was looking forward to this live event, a lot, but purely due to the positioning of the 'depo' itr became a frustating time consuming chore. Everytime I got close to compleateing a task I'd be steam rollered by a group of destro players and have to start the long trek from the order warcamp across the RvR lake. This frustration was increased by the fact that even when we did defeat the destruction payers camping the objectives they respawned so close to the depo they would be right back on top of us.

Now I don't mind RvR but I just think it could have been a little fairer, if the depo had been more central then we'd have had equal chance to camp the objectives and as one side was shifted off it the victorious would have time to complete objectives, collect crates etc before the enemy returned.

I really want my aviator goggles so I'm gonna keep trying to get them but I'm incredable frustrated at this moment.

Beyond the Sands grade C- I'm afraid. Lots of great ideas just poorly executed, in Teir 3 from an order perspective at least.

***Update 27th April 2009 *** After finally compleating the tasks I feel I should increase the grade to a B+ for effort. The underlying story was compelling and I felt the rewards reflected the amount of work put in.

Yet another week flys by

Well as the title suggests another week gone by and lot has happened in RL as well as in game. I'm dedicating the small amount of time I have in game at the moment to the acquisition of officer medallions (Isn't everyone?).

oRvR on Karak Norn has been booming, at least when I've been online, and I have managed to partake in a number keep seiges and defences.

I'va also been hitting the scenarios hard as I need to get my renown rank up. I'm currently sat at Rank 30 RR 19 so a fair bit to go before I can even use my first anhiallator piece anyway.

The Greenskin has a comprehensive list of the medalion and crest costs of the various items you can buy and at 225 per peice I worked out you only need to participate in 114 keep seiges to get 1 piece of anhiallator armour which along with other RvR activities probably isn't as much as it first appears to be. (I currently have 8 so a bit of a way to go yet.)

I think the general consencus is that the token system is a good step forward and with excitment rising about the upcoming land of the dead expansion including the 2nd part of The tome of Knowledge's look into the Tomb Kings to read I think we can all get into the vibe. Again this article features some fantastic artwork including this picture of an Ushabti Warrior.

Anyway there's plenty happening and I still owe you all the posts I was supposed to finish last week..... soon my pretties, I was always told to keep the people waiting but not much longer I promise.

The Captains WCPI - Knights in Featerd Hats

As you will see I have lost track of the numbering system for my WCPI posts so here is the next one for Knights in Feathered Hats.

This blog has recently become a regular feature on my reading list and I'm very much enjoying the output.

My favorite recent posts from codpeace include his interesting insight into why the multiplayer part of MMORPGS's sometimes sucks. Although I disagree with his ratio of arses to non arses I think he makes some very valid points in the post.

Last week was another quiet one on the Blog front due to Easter weekend and real life commitments but I hope to return to my usual posting schedule shortly.

I have a number of things to do including finish Aprils Captain's Chest.

Werit has a great round up of the recent Dev post about the Land of the Dead, As well as an MMO-ometer, it's good to see WAR is in the Warm category.

Werit doesn't just feature posts about Warhammer Online but other games as well including Champions Online, which can make a refreshing change to read from time to time once I've run out of Warhammer related stuff to read.

The King is Probably Dead...

Well the Emperor Karl Franz, and as in the Blackadder episode the title of this post is taken from he's not dead, although he is locked up in a cage in the Inevitable City. This is true on Karak Eight Peaks, the first server it seems that Destruction have managed to invade Altdorf on and successfully defeat the Emperor.

Although they've locked him up in full armour which seems a little dumb to me lol

The news broke yesterday and I found out about it on Bio Brea k.

There is a thread on Warhammer Alliance about the siege and battle and the news was confirmed on War-Europe this morning.

There are some great images on the EU Forum from the battle including the 2 I've put here to commemorate the event.

Well done to Destruction on Karak Eight peaks for being the first to do this. However it did take them 14 hours of solid gaming so it probably means I won't be heading into the Inevitable City any time soon as I just can't stay online that long.

Karl Franz looks as cool as I've ever seen him and you can see the Warhammer model that he is based on a past post here. I wonder waht Tchar'zanek will look like when he's under full assault... only time will tell.

The Captain's WCPI - Week 6

Beyond the sands exclusive item found!

Well I was on the Public test server last night with the Runepriest I created to assist the reams of slayers a while back hoping to get to see some of the new patch 1.2.1 features and I found something very exiting.

Although Mark Jacobs clear states that the patch will be rolled out on the PTS early next week it looks like someone hasn't quite got the message and some of the new content is already live.

I refer you to a commet from the most recent Grab bag in answer to the question - 'Will the tomb kings live event bring some new stylised gear and items to WAR? something that just screams "I got this from the tomb!"'

The answer included the line - 'There is an item that just screams Beyond the Sands, I can't tell you what it is yet but suffice to say, you'll wear these during and after the event to help your... discoveries.'

I think most of us believed these to be the aviators goggles revealed in this months news letter but we were very wrong.

Before scrolling down further think about it. What item do you need before heading into a tomb and nabbing some sacred artifacts.....

The Sticky Keyboard Award / WCPI No. 5

Well I'm all emotional I've been nominated for an award.... Not a real one but an award none the less, and not by 1 fellow blogger but 2 :-) Bootae's bloody blog and Way of the Chosen. I'd like to thank the Academy, My fiancee and everyone that's inspired me over the years.

This leads me on to another point actually. Today saw the very sad end of Waaagh! Syp has decided to focus his thoughts on another blog Bio Break and good luck to him there I'll certainly be a regular visitor. The thing about this though was that it reminded me why I started this blog back in May 2008 and I wanted to take a second before continuing with the awards conditions to thank Syp, Regis at Wizards and Wenches, and Snafzag of The Greenskin . These guys are the reason I started this blog. I used to read there blogs about a game that hadn't even come out yet and be entertained and informed about the ongoing development of the game that turned into Warhammer online. So thank you guys :-) I also want to thank Darren Singleton a serial blogger who helped me get started and gave me the benefit of his experience when it came to creating a blog.

So Here are my 7 nominations.

Well I have to start with Bio Break in Honour of Syp. I've been reading the blog for a while and it covers a wide range of MMO's and is an interesting read and written in a similar candid style as Waaagh! was.

Girl IRL Looking at the game from a female perspective Jennifer provides an insightful, amusing and entertaining look at the game covering topics from Questing, to inventory space and there's even some stuff about farming thrown in for good measure and thats just last week!

The Homunculus, anyone who will mock up a 3D model of their ideal suit of Chaos armour deserves an award in my view. This blog is a recent discovery for me but I'm very pleased to have found it.

Tome of Knowledge Greg is one hell of an artist and his amusing web-comics, fantastic banners and great fan art keeps me going back again and again. I even have a little piece of his work here on The Captain's Blog in the form of the WCPI banner.

Breakfast at WAR. 'Any blog thats tag line is as mad as this one has got to be worth a read.' was pretty much my first thought when I came across this blog and I was right. It's also home to some of the longest posts in Blogging history.

Corwynn-Maelstrom A relative newcomer to the blogging scene Corwynn AkA Mathew is a fellow player on the EU server Karak Norn and I feel that gives us some kind of bond or brotherhood. I've really enjoyed reading his posts and look forward to this blog lasting well into the future and we need to kill some destro together sometime mate :-)

Portraits of WAR another art based blog by another very talented artist. Forjador's style is so very Warhammer it's great. I have one of his images as my desktop background so I see his work everyday and would definitely recommend anyone who likes Warhammer / fantasy art to head over there for a look :-)

So onto 10 Facts about me.

1. The nickname I use on this blog and elsewhere (Inquisitor Goody) comes from the forum name I used during the Warhammer 40k world wide campaign Medusa V.

2. I like my job, I'm a web video producer which sounds more glamourous than it is.

3. I prefer Polish Vodka to that filthy Russian stuff. My future Mother in Law is responsible for this.

4. I played the same Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay character for 6 years and was the only member of the party to survive.

5. I believe in the existence of aliens but am skeptical about psychics, mediums and the so called supernatural

6. I proposed to my Fiancee by text message which she thinks is romantic!

7. I went to Leeds Festival and saw the reformed Guns 'n' Roses, which now consists of Axl Rose and a backing group, and it wasn't that bad.

8. I have an unhealthy enjoyment of cheese.

9. I can trace my family tree back to the 18th century (thanks to my mum's hard work)

10. I drive a bright green VW Lupo and I like it!

Oh, What's Occurring?

Well it's been a quite week for me on the blog as it's been a busy week for my in Real Life. hopefully next week should settle down and normal service will be resumed.

A few intersting things that have been discussed around the community include the introduction of a third faction on - The Greenskin, and Werit, Could it be Skaven or Vampire counts...

Another interesting thought was if Mythic add further playable races who would they be? The Homunculus has some Idle Speculation and I have been doing a thought experiment of my own matching Warhammer units / character types with the 4 Warhammer Online Archetypes and I intend to start this off next week so don't forget to sign up to my feed so you don't miss out.

I'm glad to see people have continued to vote on the Poll and I'm finding the results quite interesting with the majority of voters (visitors to the blog having played Warhammer Fantasy Battles or Warhammer 40k but if you haven't voted yet then please do.

And finally kudos to the Mythic for spotlighting the WCPI in this months news letter :-)

The Land of the Dead A Safari...

Well the beyond the sands event is set to hit next month marking the beginning of the build up to The Land of the dead expansion and the hype is starting to build.

Tome of knowledge has an amazing post covering the tomb kings lore and it's only part 1! So I wanted to get on the band wagon and use my knowledge of Warhammer to speculate a little about the kinds of monsters that might lie in wait in the catacombs of the Land of the Dead.

Clues to a couple of these have been sent in the form of images on USB pens to a couple of bloggers including Lagwar, Rainbow MMO and The Greenskin,

Firstly Lagwar's image shows what looks like a larged barbed snake / tail piercing the sand. This could be some kind of sandworm but is far more likely a Tomb Scorpion. In the Warhammer Tabletop game these lay in wait 'buried' until enemy units got close enough for them to reveal themselves and strike. They have a chitinous bony appearance similar to in the image.

The next is a concept sketch on Rainbow MMO. This is clearly labeled as an Ushabti blade so I think we can take it as a given that these 10 foot tall, 2 handed blade wielding, jackal,crocodile, vulture or asp headed monstrosities will be making an appearance (tbh I'd be disappointed if they'd been left out)

And thirdly The Greenskins image is far more cryptic (when you see the image you'll get the pun) It shows a tomb with a strange bone construct in the middle not quite human, not quite animal. At first I thought it was a Tomb King or Tomb Prince but the clawed right foot has me a little confused.

Other creatures we can expect to encounter in the Land of the dead are as follows

Liche Priests

Skeleton Warriors (obviously)

Swarms of Scorpions (Maybe?)

Tomb Guard - the elite warriors that guard the Mummies

Carrion - decaying vultures ewwww...

Bone giants - these are already in the game and...

Screaming skull Catapults.

The Captain's WCPI - Week 4

This week it's the turn of Girl IRL to be featured here on The Captain's Blog.

This blog is (as the name might suggest) written from a female perspective and it's great to read about gaming from a different perspective.

Jennifer has recently been thinking about whether Mythic will increase personal bank storage in the game as she like many of us by now I imagine is struggleing to keep everything she wants to. A problem that is only compounded by her hoarding of Mysterious Grey objects.

I found this post most interesting as I too have difficulty throwing away those odd grey quest rewards like Emergency Gold that appear to have a use but finding it is a different matter. Some of these items appear to be useable to get tome unlocks so we'll see what happens with them in the future.

The Captain's Chest - 21st March

Pancakez from Breakfast at WAR has written the longest wall of text I've ever seen and it deserves the link just for that let alone the prodigous amount of content about balance in the game :-)

Syp over at Waaaagh has been getting some great interviews lately and the one that I found most interesting the most was with Mark Davis on Live Events.

I NPC therefore I am.. another great webcomic from Tome of Knowledge along with some musings aout the life of NPC's when their shifts end

The Homunculus has a short but useful post about the benefits of the Crafting info add on.

Stunty Stomper explains the joys of skeletal companionship.

Is Mount Gunbad Good Value?

Firstly I've been trying to write this since Sunday and it's just not been happening but I've finally chained myself to the computer long enough to get on with it. The reason I want to ask this question is that I really wanted to do an instanced Dungeon in WAR. Up until Sunday I'd not had the chance and finally having an almost level 29 character I thought I's pull together a group and head for Gunbad. (Yes I am the slowest leveler in the world - 29 levels since head start...)

This question arose when I asked in guild chat if anyone wanted to join me and I was soon greeted with a /tell saying 'Don't bother with Gunbad the rewards are rubbish'

Well I thought now having half a warband chomping at the bit arguing over whether we head left or right I couldn't really let them down and to be honest I didn't want to. I grabbed the quests and we set off. (Interestingly you can also get quests from the cauldron over the fire in there that give you various fungus based buffs)

I have to say it was the most fun I've had in a while. Gunbad has a great look and atmosphere. Night Goblins have always been some of my favorite creatures in Warhammer as they were the first regiment I ever painted (badly).

There is a great variety of monsters in there we only really explored the east wing but encountered the aforementioned Goblins, snotlings, Trolls, giant spiders, undead and even a giant! I think most of the other group members had fun too although we did fall prey to a few fallings out unfortunately.

I managed to reach the first influence level and went to check out the rewards and... they weren't very inspiring, all of the gear is aimed at lower level charaters really.

The same could be said for xp which at the level I am was either non existent or very minimal especially shared across 2 parties. The only piece of loot that was moderately useful was a 1 handed sword for if I'm tanking with sword and shield but for me this is a rare occurrence as I prefer use a great sword as this is the traditional armament of the Swordmasters of Hoeth.

So was it good value?

In about 2 hours of play I got

minimal experiance
1 useful item
1/3 of the influence available from the mountain

However I also had 2 great hours of fun in a well made, well thoughtout dungeon themed around one of my favorite races in Warhammer.

I'd have to say that 1 good point for me thoroughly outweighs any negative points or a lack of decent gear. So if your looking for an interesting place to go with a group of players and a slightly different WAR experience I'd have to say, yes I think mount Gunbad is good value.

The Elves pipped the Dwarves to the top spot at the last minuet as it was neck and neck all month. Oh well there's another line fot the Book of Grudges. The actually one, well the fantasy one, well you get the point, not the Blog of the same name.

The Captains WCPI - Week 3

This week for me it has to be Hammer Wiki that I feature in this slot as I have used it this last week more than ever before.

As the name might suggest this is a Wiki site focused on Warhammer online and the more I play the more I find I use this. It's great because anyone can edit it and add to it so it's usually pretty accurate.

I also like that it doesn't just focus on game mechanics but also background as the sections of Mount Gunbad and the twin moons of the Warhammer world illustrate. Yes there is information about the various inhabitants of Gunbad in the game but also the background of the place from a Warhammer lore point of view.

In addition to this kind of information it also gives great overviews of the races and careers so it covers a lot of information in the one website. There are a few gaps that need filling and all I can say is if you have the knowledge to add to this site please do as it can only grow and get better as time goes by.

What's your favourite Monster in Warhammer?

Like I did last Saturday I'm throwing the comments form open to ask for your answers to this weeks question. A nice simple one, Whats your favourite monster in the Warhammer world? This can be something you've encountered in Warhammer Online like the Greater Daemon of Nurgle that appeared in the oRvR lakes during Witching night, or something from the tabletop game.

My Favorites are - in Warhammer Online, probably the Screamers of Tzeentch becuase they are so sleek and float around everywhere.

In Warhammer Fantasy Battles - definitely the Shaggoth. I can't wait to see one of these guys in the computer game he's a cross between a Dragon and a Giant.
