How to Fill Application Form

Assuming that you have already registered, just login and follow the instructions as below to fill in the form.

If not already registered, please register. For details about registration, you can read my article on How to Register or click here.

Follow these steps to Fill the Application Form :

Step 1 : Login with your Email-id & password. Then click on the Application. Next click on Application Form.

Step 2 : Select the Exam center that you prefer & select the Intended Month. Intended Month will be the month in which you will be giving your exam, not the month of booking. Select the Fresher option & then click Next at the bottom right corner.

Step 3 : Fill in all the Personal Details, upload a photo of you. After filling all the details correctly, click Next.

Step 4 : Fill in all the details correctly. If you dont have have an EXN-45(for people giving exams in Mumbai MMD), no need to worry, just leave the option blank, and fill the remaining details correctly and click Next.

Step 5 : Fill your Contact Details correctly and click Next.

Step 6 : Fill in the fee details correctly. People giving exam from Mumbai MMD, will have to leave this section blank. Click Next to continue.

Step 7 : Select the proper stream & Education Level. Click Next to continue.

Step 8 : Fill the proper details of Pre-Sea Training Course. Institute INDOS no. can be obtained fron DG Shipping site, or click here. Click Next to continue.

Step 9 : In this section, you have to fill PHASE 2 row.

Date of Completion will be your Sign-Off Date.

Designated Training Officer will be the Chief Engineer when you signed off.

Details of Certificate of Competency will be COC no of that Chief Engineer.

Fill in the proper details and clcik Next to continue.

Step 10 : In this section, you will have to fill your sea experience.

No. of Testimonials will be the total no. of testimonials for a single ship. Ex. if you have sailed on 2 ships, and have 3 testimonials, 2 from first ship and 1 from another, then, in the first row, no. of testimonials will be 2. Then add a row, and the no. of testimonial will be 1.

Fill the details of different ships accordingly.

In the column Date, From-To will be the sign on and sign off dates for that particular ship.

Article period will come automatically.

QSS will be the propulsion time, i.e. the actual no of days spent in sea. If you have more than 1 testimonial for the ship, then add the total propulsion days of the testimonial and write the total.

Total QSS will be the total no. of propulsion time, of all the ships.

Fill the details correctly and click Next to continue.

Step 11 : Fill the details of all the STCW courses, except ERS course details.

STCW Code A will be given on the certificate.

Fill in the details of FPFF, PST, PSSR, EFA, MFA, AFFC & PSCRB course details.

Institute Indos no can be obtained from the DG Shipping site, or click here.

Fill the details and click Next to continue.

Step 12 : Select the date when you are going to submit the application. this can be filled later. Select Functions 3, 4B, 5 & 6.

Select I AGREE, click Next to continue.

Step 13 : Fill this only if you had a COC earlier. If no, just leave everything blank and click Next to continue.

Step 14 : Fill the ERS details in this section. In the Remarks section write PASS if completed the course successfully. Click Next to continue.

Step 15 : This is the final step for submitting the form. Once you click on the Submit option, you will not be able to edit any details that you have provided or that are remaining to be filled.

You can submit the application form any time later, all the details will be saved, so you can logout at anytime and login later with the same details.

Once you submit the form, it will go for review in the MMD and you will get a confirmation mail once your application is approved. Then you can book the corresponding seat for exam.

After submitting the application, you can take printouts. But the pdf file will not open from Chrome browser, you will have to open it in Internet Explorer.

Class IV Requirements

Before directly applying for Class IV, one should be certain that he/she has all the documents ready beforehand, in order to avoid unnecessary cancellation or delay of seat booking. Following are the documents compulsorily required for applying:

CDC with ship stamp.
Passport.
Indos.
TAR Book, with appropriate signs and stamps wherever necessary.
Sea-Service Certificate from the company.
Valid Medical Certificate.
Testimonials From Chief Engineer.
10th Passing Certificate.
(10+2) Passing Certificate.
Diploma Certificate (if applicable).
Degree Certificate.
All Semesters Marks Card.
Pre-Sea Training Course Degree Certificate.
EFA (Elementary First Aid) Certificate.
PSSR (Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities) Certificate.
PST (Personal Survival Techniques) Certificate.
FPFF (Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting) Certificate.
MFA (Medical First Aid) Certificate.
AFFC (Advanced Fire Fighting) Certificate.
PSCRB (Proficiency in Survival Crafts & Rescue Boats) Certificate.
ERS (Engine Room Simulator) Certificate (Post-sea Certificate).

Out of the above Certificates, only Sea-Service & Valid Medical Certificates have to be submitted in original for verification. Rest all certificates' self attested photocopies have to be submitted. But during verification, both original & photocopies have to be carried as they will be checked & compared.

During the form filling process, you will need to carry Passport size photographs with you, carry atleast 4.

MY FIRST EXPERIENCE AT SEA

The first question to a mariner is always, 'How does it feel to be on land again?'.

Many would say,'It feels great to be back on land'.

But me on the other hand would like to say, 'Hell, I wanna go back again as soon as possible'.

My first ship was a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) of GT 161202T with a size of 333m X 60m, joined at Fujairah on 4th April, 2013. We sailed mostly from the Middle East to India, carrying crude oil each time. Had a chance to visit South Korea as well.

When I first Signed-On in the ship, it was a dream come true. But the first 2 months were very crucial, to be frank, I was like, what the hell am I doing here? Don't believe me? Well here are some pics of my E/R:

The engine room was so huge, that I lost around 10kgs of my weight in the first 4 weeks. In the first month, I only had to trace lines, make layouts of each platform, & most importantly, I had to make sure the E/R was always clean. Now I know that you maybe thinking, what has cleaning got to do here? Well guys, lemme tell you one fact, 5th Engineer/Jr. Engineer is always incharge of cleaning & maintaining the E/R clean. Don't expect that you will be given to do work on machines unless you have proven yourself a good cleaner.

But everything works out as time goes by. Slowly you start to learn small things by observing them. Soon after I joined the ship, I got a chance to see the procedure to change the liner of M/E, then a Generator broke down, so got to see it completely dismantled, including its body & frame, & then again another liner change of M/E.

Well that's me during changing of M/E liner. The M/E was of Sulzer with 36960 BHP, while the generators were of MAN B&W. As our ship was an oil tanker, we had COPTs for discharging:

As I said, the first 2 months were crucial, as I was finding it hard to cope up with the huge E/R, but well, after somedays I started to enjoy the huge E/R. Due to its enormous size, we had lots of space to work & no cramped places.

Slowly I started to learn things step by step, from starting the generator, to starting the M/E plant, from cleaning to overhauling machinery. But as always my foremost job by the end of the day was to ensure that the E/R was clean.

Since our ship was a VLCC, it didn't see much ports. We had to stay on SBM (Single Buoy Mooring), a place far from port, for loading & discharging. But yet, I got to go on shore leave in South Korea. The only drawback of an oil tanker is that you don't get to see much ports. If you want to see ports & visit other places, the best option is a Bulk carrier.

Finally after 2 months, I was completely settled in, & happy with my work. The best thing was that I started loving my job. It wasn't the cleaning that I loved, but the overhauling of various machinery & their troubleshooting.

After completing 5 voyages, from India to Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia & South Korea, I finally signed off at Gujarat after 7 months of sea service on 28th October 2013. For me it was the best job satisfaction, working with big machines & a big ship. Can't wait to pass class IV exams & return to the sea once again. :)

Familiarization Courses

This post deals with the post-training of a Marine Engineer, after the main training. One is needed to complete the basic familiarization courses before going on a ship. This is essential for Dangerous Cargoes carrying ship, viz. Oil Tanker, Chemical Tanker, Gas Tanker.

There are 3 main courses:

1. Oil Tanker Familiarization Course

2. Chemical Tanker Familiarization Course

3. Liquefied Gas Tanker Familiarization Course

These courses are needed to be completed before going on the respective ship. These deal with the safety of the ship & a short introduction to them. The main aim is to get familiarized with the emergencies & danger on-board these sips.

On completing these courses, one will get certificate of that course, which one has to get it endorsed from the MMD.

Other Courses to be done during Training

The college training alone is not enough to get you on board. In order to get on a ship, one needs a CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate). In order to get this one must first have INDoS (Indian National Database of Seafarers) number.

Mostly, the college in which you are acquiring training will get an INDoS number for you.

Once you have an INDoS number you can apply for CDC. But along with INDoS number, one must complete certain courses. They are:

Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting Course (FPFF)
Engine Simulation Course (ESC)
Elementary First-Aid Course (EFA)
Personnel Safety & Social Responsibilities Course (PSSR)
Personal Survival Techniques Course (PST)

Once you have completed these 5 courses & obtain the certificates, one has to fill the CDC application form in 2 steps. These all things will be done by your college or institute. But unless these courses are completed, one cannot get a CDC certificate & will not be allowed on a ship.

The arrival of CDC takes time, so the courses have to be done as soon as possible, so that the CDC arrives at the time of completion of your course.

Also after the arrival of CDC, please make sure that all the details on the CDC are correct & in case any correction is needed, apply as soon as possible as it takes a lot of time to get another CDC with the corrections. So initially make sure that you fill in all the details correctly to avoid further corrections.

Selection of Institute for Training

Till now, I have discussed the various ways through which one can become a Marine Engineer. In this post I am going to give a list of various colleges that give training for a person to become a Marine Engineering. One can join any of the following colleges by applying to the institute directly. But one must apply when the college declares the registration for course. For this you will have to constantly keep checking the websites of the college, or you can call directly to the college & ask them personally.

Also, if you are already sponsored by a company, then the company itself will select an institute for your training & you will have to join the same institute. Some companies may give you options, but very few companies give such options. If the sponsoring company selects a institute for you, you have no option but to compulsorily join that institute.

Moreover, you will have to pay the fees yourself for the course. The fees include everything, starting from your accommodation, food, etc., to your clothes, shoes, etc. If there is anything that you have to bring, the institute informs beforehand while taking admission, the things to be brought at the time of reporting.

Now for candidates joining an institute without any sponsorship, you have options for institutes. You can join any of the college, depending upon your preferences. Following is a list of colleges that are presently good, & also provide good placements.

Acquiring a Sponsorship

This post is specially for people wanting to join as a Marine Engineer after completing their 4 years Mechanical Engineering Degree course.

Before I begin, let me clear one important thing - Sponsorship does not mean that the company will fund your course, it only means that the company is willing to give you on-board training after the completion of your course.

Acquiring a sponsorship

There are thousands & thousands of shipping companies all over the world. But getting a sponsorship is a little difficult, but not impossible. Not all the companies offer give sponsorship, but if you are interested in a company then you can write a mail to the company to provide a sponsorship for you.

If you have already completed your course & the college hasn't provided any placement for you, then the best way to get on-board training is, use any contacts that you have in Merchant Navy. Mostly contact any Captains & Chief Engineers that are in your family or friends circle, they are your best help. If everything other fails, only contacts can help you to get a ship for training.

For people entering Marine Engineering via PGDME/GME/TME course, first apply to various companies. The application for sponsorship varies from company to company. Some companies have a specific procedure for offering sponsorships, while some companies don't.

Nowadays, some companies have their own institute for PGDME/GME/TME course. For these companies, you have to follow a specific procedure to get the sponsorship. The main procedure is the same:

Register for Sponsorship

Qualify in all 3

To apply, first you will have to keep an eye on the websites of these companies. Mostly after June-July, ads will start appearing for registration for sponsorship to B.E./B.Tech candidates. Once you register, you will be called for written test, & the procedure will continue. Some companies will go on eliminating candidates after written, interview & medical, while some companies will declare the results of chosen candidates directly.

Each company has its exams at different time of the year, also the procedure is long, so make sure you apply for as many companies as possible, because the selection procedure may sometimes elongate as long as 4 months. During this if you ignore any other companies' exam, then you will repent for ignoring & not getting selected as well in the company you were trying & have to wait another year to try again. So best is to have 2-3 choices at hand as a safe side.

Selection as a Cadet

As I have mentioned earlier, there are 3 ways in which you can become a Marine Engineer. But one cannot directly get selected as a candidate. He/She has to go through various tests & interviews to get selected in an institute.

In order to get admission in any of the Marine Institute, a person has to be first qualified. There may be various criterias for different colleges. But the general criteria is:

Apply to the institute
Appear for the interview
Appear for Medical Tests
Pass in interview as well as medical.

There is no problem in the interview, as no institute wants to deny a seat to the candidate, but passing medical tests totally depends upon the person's ailities. Medical tests majorly depend upon:

Vision Test
Ear Test
Chest X-ray

Also other minor things like, blood pressure, height, weight, etc., will be checked. The interview part may not be for people applying after 10+2, i.e. for Marine Engineering Course (4 Years Degree), but it is mandatory for 1 year PGDME/GME/TME course.

For persons applying after 10+2 (for 4 years Marine Engineering Degree Course & 3 years Polyvalent B.Sc Degree Course), the main criteria is their 10+2 marks & may have to give entrance of the institute if it has one.

For persons applying after their degree course (for 1 year PGDME/GME/TME course) the main criteria for selection is by 2 methods:

Sponsorship by a Shipping Company
Direct application in a Marine Institute

If you have applied to a shipping company & if they sponsor you for training, then the company decides in which institute your training will be conducted, or sometimes even gives a choice of institute, but it totally depends upon the shipping company.

But if you apply directly to an institute, then the above procedure has to be followed, i.e., interview & medical tests. But most of the times, candidates are selected & no problems arise unless there is any severe medical problems with the candidate.

Communication Skills

This is more of an interactive subject than a theoretical one. This is to improve your communications skills, as communications skills are very much important on ships, as various nationalities may be present on the same ship.
