Inventory Addition: 1.5mm Rattail Necklaces

I'm still updating my inventory with new and different crafts. This week, I'm working on using Rattail cord and macrame to produce some simple but elegant necklaces.

Here are two I made last night. Each necklace takes about an hour to construct. Pretty, aren't they?

The necklaces were made using 1.5mm Rattail cord in navy blue and burnt orange.

These two necklaces are other examples of the DIY kits I'll make for purchase over the next couple months.

The kits will include all necessary material needed to construct a DIY necklace similar to what's shown in the image.

Here is a larger image showing the macrame in more detail.

The blue stone is set in a knotted 'bag', while the orange upside down donut necklace was created using square knots.

Each necklace takes about an hour to finish. The macrame is then dabbed with super glue in areas where the cord was cut. This prevents the cord from unraveling later on. The ends are also touch with a flame for the same reason.

After completing this type of necklace, I generally wait over night before wearing. In doing so, I'm assured the super glue has completely dried.

More On Kits:
Over the past couple weeks I have been talking about making DIY kits for purchase.

I'm still in the process of deciding which crafts I want to include in the kits and the cost. Once I work out all the details, I will include links showing where my kits can be purchased along with a link to the instructional videos. More info on the kits will be provided at a later date.

Another short post for this week. Right now I have some ball chain necklaces I want to experiment with. Hopefully, the ball chains will end up in next weeks inventory!

Inventory Addition: Antique Bracelets

While getting ready for the next crafting event, I've decided to add some antique bracelets to my inventory.

Here's a sample of one I made this morning. Pretty, isn't it?

The bracelet measures a total of 8.5 inches. The stringing material is 49 strand Beadalon. The colors of the charms and findings are antique bronze and antique silver.

I'm still deciding if this piece will end up in my Etsy shop or on my vendor table at the Rose Bowl. Decisions, decisions?

Since I'm planning on constructing a DIY kit for this bracelet, a tutorial will not be providing in this post. Later, I will create a instructional video and upload it on YouTube. More info to come...

Custom Domain Name Deletes Comments

In this post, I just wanted to give a special Thanks to my friends and subscribers who were concerned about the disappearance of all my comments, recommends, and links to other posts.

This permanent condition is a direct result of my wanting to use a custom domain name for my blog instead of the default, name.blogspot.com, provided by Blogger when you first sign up.

I was clearly warned this would negatively impact my Google+ Comments but felt this change was necessary for streamlining two of my websites.

If this is something you'd like to try, implement the redirection shortly after creating your blog. If you don't you'll lose all your comments like I did.

Website Traffic? Whose Linking You?

Ever wonder how some blogs seem to have consistent traffic day end and day out?

How does the smaller blogger accomplish this task?

I found one way is by submitting your originals to crafting sites that accept submissions on their blog and/or website.

After reading all the positive comments from submitting projects, I've decided to give it a try. My plan, over the next few months? To submit my how-to's and tutorials all over the place. Getting featured is basically creating great products portrayed with sharp, clear precise photos featuring the process.

If my projects are favorable, I'll become featured. A feature link and photo will bring traffic from their site to my site as their members like my project and want to view more.

What are the sites you ask? I found many but used a cutoff point of 14. There were so many. The sites listed I found the most useful and easy to maneuver.

While the majority of sites I listed are larger, don't overlook the smaller sites if you run across one. Every site had to start somewhere and by growing as a featured artist with a smaller site the overall benefits could be huge in the long run.

Each site listed is slightly different. The process ranges from a very simple submission process and takes under a minute to submissions requiring an approval process that could take weeks. Just submit your available projects to as many sites as you like. You'll end up a featured artist rock star in no time.

Okay, let's get started...

Here's the list (in no specific order)

DIYCozyHome site is asking to feature bloggers. Owner looks at all entries personally. Needs link, description and permission to use photo. This might just be the first site I'll try.

30MinuteCrafts this site is looking for projects that will take 30 minutes, 15 minutes, or 10 minutes. Easy submission form. List if your project will be completed in 30, 15 or 10 by checking a checkbox on form. Another site I'll be trying early on.

DollarStoreCrafts this site states they receive a lot of submissions and your submission may appear on their site, on their Facebook page, on a link to their Twitter account, or not posted it at all. By submitting, you agree for them to post one or two of your project photos. A link and credit to you will be provided. They also have a list of tips.

Hometalk very easy site to add submissions.

StumbleUpon another site where submitting your material is easy.

BeadAndCord this site is more of a community where members contribute to the growing DIY library.

Indulgy this site looks like pinterest. You pin projects to your board.

AllFreeHolidayCrafts the project submit button is located on the top of the page. They supply a full list of the types of projects they are looking for. Nice! It takes the guess work out of what to submit.

AllFreeChristmasCrafts setup exactly like All Free Holiday Crafts. They are probably sister site.

CraftGossip Wow! Over 60,000 projects listed. If chosen for a feature article, the views would be awesome. I would imagine being chosen can't be easy though. That's a lot of DIY projects.

TotallyTutorials takes tutorials, recipes, or patterns.Each post links directly to the tutorial author's blog. Very easy submission.

Craftqawker looks like pinterest. I've heard they are very picky about their photo's and submissions.

TipJunkie full of tips and tutorial submissions. Very large community. Size of site membership may make it hard to get featured.

And let's not forget

Pinterest I don't have pinterest linked to my blog, I have it linked to my teachmeclay.com website instead. I have found that a healthy part of my visitors are coming from pinterest.

Need A Gift Box? Make One

Ever find yourself in need of a gift box for a present or to organize some jewelry pieces? Why not make one yourself.

It's actually easier that you may think. This tutorial will walk you through making a simple box. Instructions for the top and bottom are identical.

No more hunting around for the right size box or the perfect coordinating colors. The choices are endless. For my bottoms, I use colored, textured cardstock. For the tops, I've used magazine pages, scrapbooking paper and gift wrap.

Materials Needed

- 8"x 8" cardstock for bottom
- 8"x 8" scrapbook paper for top
- ruler or straight edge
- scissors
- pencil/pen

Instructions

1. Cut out a sheet of 8x8 inch paper. The paper can be any size but the length and height must be equal. The paper I use for the bottom is textured cardstock.

The bottom needs to be sturdy. Don't use very thin paper for the bottom.

2. Draw a line from corner to corner as seen in photo. Fold one corner towards the center of the page.

3. Fold the same side in half. Press edges down to form a nice folded crease. Open the corner you just double folded so the paper will lay flat.

4. Repeat step 3 on the remaining three corners. Lay paper flat after folding.

5. Now, you need to cut the paper in four places. Using the photo as a guide, cut the paper where indicated from the photo. Try to cut in the creases. Stop where the creases meet towards the middle as shown in the photo.

6. Take the two sides that were not cut and fold them towards the center. This will begin to form the bottom of the box.

7. Take the same two sides and fold again but this time fold them so they are pointing upwards. This step begins forming the sides of the box.

8. It's now time to close the sides of the box. Fold in the side corners. This will result in a "L" shape on both sides.

9. Take the flap that was cut out earlier in Step 5 and fold it down inside and into the center of the box. Repeat on the other side.

You have just created the bottom of a box. Now, select a colorful piece of paper and repeat all steps to create the top for your box. Once completed, just fit the top of the box over the bottom.

The first box you make may seem a little uncomfortable. After constructing a few, this will quickly pass.

I now crank out boxes by the dozen in a relatively short amount of time. This comes in handy during craft fairs, during the holidays or just when I really need a box.

Rose Bowl May 2015

Happy Mother's Day to all you wonderful mother's.

Today was another vendoring day at the Rose Bowl. It was a nice sunny, breezy day. In short, the weather was beautiful.

Again, I had my 10 x 10 vendor booth stocked with my handcrafted goodies and crafting supplies.

Since it's Mother's Day today, there were a lot of mother and daughter pairs strolling around. There were also a lot more families together.

I also noticed today people weren't buying as they did in previous months. I talked with other vendor's. They expressed the same observations.

Just a lot of lookie loo's that were laughing, talking and looking around with their hands stuffed in their pockets.

For this May month, I did change my booth design. I brought out a lot more of my handcrafted jewelry and jewelry supplies. I also changed the decorum by adding table cloths and table runners.

The change ended up being a positive one. It resulted with more people stopping inside my booth and looking around, picking up items which allowed for more conversation with potential buyers.

Next month, in June, I'm going to change the booth decorum around again. I want to find a style that will express my brand.

I'm thinking of dividing up the booth by arranging the crafting supplies on one side of the booth while the handcrafted items will be displayed on the other side.

I want people to remember my booth when they leave. Maybe even mention how nice and different the Teach Me Clay boot was to friends and/or family.

I will begin performing DIY demo's for making handcrafted jewelry findings and passing those findings out as free samples when people drop by. Each handcrafted finding will be attached to a business card. The card will be designed to drive more traffic to my website.

There are just so many possibilities but time to incorporate these new ideas is limited. My next Rose Bowl event will be, you guessed it, June 14, the second Sunday of the month, every month.

Drop by my blog next week and see what's added to my collection. Time to add something new and maybe a little sassy.

Twisting The Night Away

I found that I love making twisted wire jewelry. It's easy to do and the outcome always ends up fabulous and interesting. This post is going to be more of a. "look what I made," instead of a tutorial. Hope you enjoy.

By using just a few beads and wire, you can make a gorgeous pair of earrings.

Materials Used
6 brown beads
18 gauge copper wire
To complete earrings
2 jump rings
2 ear wires

Easy Peasy! Any hole drilled beads will do. Wire? I use anywhere from 18 - 24 gauge. Anything larger is to hard to twist. Anything smaller and the shape won't lay right.

This beauty ended up becoming a brooch. I had some burgundy pearls and pink glass beads left over after making a knotted necklace.

I didn't have enough left over beads for a full bracelet so decided to wire twist.

Love the results and it looks so nice when worn with the necklace.

The lesson here is, never throw out those left over beads. You never know what project will call for only a few beads. This brooch only uses 15 beads.

Then there are always those special occasions. I needed a quick pair of earrings for a New Year's eve party.

I twisted up these earrings, along with a right angle weave necklace and a right angle weave bracelet.

The entire project took just over half an hour. I received many compliments and will definitely be making these again. This is an example of twisting with 24 gauge copper wire instead of 18 gauge copper wire.

I always use copper wire. It's actually my favorite wire color along with rose gold. But, use your favorite wire color. Silver, gold and gunmetal all make wonderful wire twists color choices.

What about this little pitiful thing? It was my first attempt at wire wrapping many years ago. Since it's my first, I just can't seem to get rid of it.

I actually have a drawer full of my first time attempts and mistakes. They bring back memories and remind me of what not to do.

It still looks like a little man. Maybe I'll wire wrap in some tiny beads for eyes. What do you think? I can't hurt. Anything would be an improvement.

Basic Instructions If wondering (no photos)

- cut off about a foot of copper wire
- slide a bead onto the wire
- twist wire until the twist is 0.5 inch to 1.0 inch in length
- add another bead and twist again making another branch

Your only real decision is whether you want all your beads to have the same twist length. You can see from my photo's that some of my wire twists have an equal length while others do not.

Play around with your design. There really are no rules. Just twist the night away.

Right Angle Weave Fun

In this post, I will give very, very simple instructions on how to create a right angle weave. Once you learn the basics, you can add as many rows as you like.

I plan on using this technique to create some keychains. When my keychains are finished, I will post them at a later time.

Two projects I designed. Both contain one right angle row.

All righty then, let get onto making a Right Angle Weave Unit.

Creating Row One
Begin by stringing four beads onto your thread.

Following the first image, stitch back through the first three beads. It will create a loop. This loop is called the basic right angle weave unit or RAW for short.

A basic RAW unit is created with exactly four beads.

Following the second image, you will create the second right angle weave unit. The second unit is created by building out the first row.

When looking at the circle you just created, find the top, bottom, left and right sides of the RAW unit. To create the second unit, you will build it off either the right or the left side. For this demo, I've used the right hand side. It's easier for me because I'm right-handed.

String on three more beads as seen in the second image. Now, using the third image, string your thread through the right bead from RAW unit one, the top bead, and then the right bead of RAW unit 2. This completes RAW unit two.

Pick up 3 more beads. This will begin RAW unit 3. As shown in image four, string your thread through the right bead from RAW unit two, the bottom bead, and then the right bead of RAW unit 3. This completes RAW unit three.

Image 5 shows the direction your thread travels while making the units. As you can see, the stitch pattern is a looping Figure Eight.

Keep adding units until you've reached your desired length. Remember, the threaded needle will alternate pointing down for one unit, then pointing towards the top for the next unit. For every new unit you wish to add, begin by threading on three additional beads.

Congratulations! You have just created a right angle weave.

Love My Bead Board

If you love beading, you really should think about investing in a bead board. I have found this tool a real jewelry making necessity.

How I begin a new project with beads

My board makes it easy to create stunning jewelry pieces. I can easily lay out a multi strand necklace and bracelet design with ease.

I just create and set out my pattern in the grooves of the board before I even think about stringing the beads together.

I have found placing many different types of beads on the board allows me to observe new, exciting combinations of color mixes and shapes. I do this mixing of beads before I even begin thinking about my design.

Another benefit of the board is it holds the beads in place. We've all had a bead or two get away from us. Mine always end up rolling to a place where I can't immediately find them.

Ever down on your hands and knees frantically hunting under furniture or around the floor? The board has trays, wells and is textured making bead rolling a think of the past unless you accidentally drop one like I've done so many times.

Last benefit I'll mention is the ability to travel with your beads. I like being able to pack away my half-finished projects without the need to undo or repack the beads first.

There you have it. An easier way to,

try out bead combinations before even cutting a thread
prevent beads from rolling away while you create your design and
make bead traveling easier.

I'm sure there are many other benefits found using a board. These are the top three I've come up with. Now, grab your board and design that perfect masterpiece.

Rose Bowl April 2015

This Sunday was Rose Bowl April. That's why my blog is going out later than usual. I had to get up at 4:00 am in order to pack up and get ready for the event. The rules are you must be inside the Rose Bowl as a vendor before 6:30 am or you lose your spot.

Even though the flea market doesn't officially open until 9:00 am, there are vendors and store owners who are cruising around between 6:30 - 9:00 am buying the best merchandise early.

All in all, I had a lot of fun. Not only did I sell my handcrafted jewelry, I also setup a wall of supplies. The supply wall sold well. Mostly chains and charms.

I did ask what people would like to see being sold as supplies. Surprisingly enough, people were asking what material I made my pendants from and wanted to purchase some polymer clay when I told them.

My biggest delight of the day was when a couple people who had visited my website came over and introduced themselves. Small world.

Next month I will be changing my booth style again. I need more jewelry, more supplies, more everything. Watching people walk around I saw a lot of the objects purchased were unusual items. I saw washboards, old antique bed frames, plants in interesting containers, etc. Guess I'll be hitting some antique and vintage yard and rummage sales for new ideas. I've decided to make my booth look interesting.

In May, I'll be ready. The day of the event is May 10th. Mother's Day. I expect another fun filled day.

Save Money on Tools Using Everyday Objects

When I first began making jewelry, I ran out and purchased every available tool I could afford. On some of the more overpriced tools, I'd hold out until the tool either went on sale or I could get a hold of a store coupon.

As I became more comfortable with my jewelry making techniques, I found myself wanting to save my tool money for the purchase of jewelry making supplies like polymer clay, wire and findings. This led me to began looking around my home for suitable tool substitutions.

Look around your home for inspiration. Remember though, once it's used on clay, do not reuse on food. Polymer clay is non toxic but the manufactures recommend never mix the two. My rule of thumb? If I can't dedicate what ever it is as a polymer clay tool, I don't use it.

Now on to the good stuff. Here are some inexpensive everyday items you can find around your home.

Rollers
Yes. I automatically ran out and bought an acrylic roller and brayer for my clay. Since those days, I now also use an ordinary drinking glass and a rolling pin. Both were Thrift Store finds.

Acrylic Sheets
I bought a acrylic sheet years ago. It measures 2.5" x 7.0". It's not very wide and works best for small projects.

I still use it often but on projects like rolling small to medium beads. When I need a larger sheet for larger beads or swirls, I use a CD cover. If I need something larger still, I remove the glass found in small picture frames. My favorite find is the glass from a 5" x 7" picture frame. I purchased it from the Salvation Army Thrift Shop for 0.25 cents.

Jump Ring Makers

I use all sorts of around the house items depending on the jump ring size I'm looking for.

Any round handle will do, This includes screw drivers, pens, utensils, etc. See photo for a clearer explanation.

I have also found handles that were oval and square in shape. Those handles make for a nice variation to the all so common round jump ring.

Cookie Cutters

I no longer purchase full priced cutters that claim they are specifically designed for clay. They are just cutters but carry a hefty price tag.

I now purchase my cutters from places like the 99 cent store, Walmart and Big Lot's.

I did recently purchased a nice set of cookie cutters from Michael's. Large crafting stores like Michael's will have a great sale when seasonal items are no longer in season.

The trick with the more expensive craft stores is to just keep your eyes open and use your coupons. You never know what will end up in the discount bin.

Letter Stamping
I use alphabet soup. Yep! Plain old dry pasta. The only downfall is it consists of letters only. No numbers or special characters. Oh well, for 0.35 cents a bag, I can carve my own numbers.

Bottom Line, times are hard so save your money. Look around. What do you see?

Some other items I use are old light bulbs, empty soda cans and potatoes. Can you guess which tools they've replacing? I bet you can't.

Bold Beads using 6 colors

When I was going through my inventory of clay looking for which colors were low and needed reordered, I put aside all the packs already opened from previous projects. There were about 15 opened packs.

Instead of opening up any new clay, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to use those clay packs.

I have two upcoming craft fairs and will be teaching classes again in the month of April. Since I need beads and pendants to sell during these events, I decided it was time I get started.

This post will show you what I've been doing this morning.

I picked out six different colors for this project. Each segment is in a half ounce size. I had already decided I did not want my colors blended. For this reason, I did not use my pasta machine. I used a roller. By using the roller, the colors in my finishes pieces are bold and bright.

The six Premo Sculpey Accents colors I selected are Purple Pearl, Bright Green Pearl, Peacock Pearl, Bronze, Copper and Red Glitter.

Each color was chopped into small bits and conditioned. I was able to easily condition my clay by hand since the clay wasn't old and hard.

If your clay is old and begins to crumble while trying to condition, read this post, Don't Throw Away That Old Clay written last week. The post lists several methods used to easily condition old clay.

Once conditioned, each color was rolled into balls. The balls were then shaped into teardrops. To create a teardrop, pinch one end of of the ball until it resembles the photo on the left.

Line up each color in an order you find pleasing. In the photo, you will see the color combination I selected.

After your teardrops are placed next to each other, they need flattening. To obtain the non-blended effect, I had decided not to use my pasta machine. If you try this method and decide you want blending, you will want to use your pasta machine.

This is where a plain old deck of playing cards work quite nicely.

The cards are used to make sure the teardrops are all flattened to the same height.

I have cards stacked and taped at heights of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 cards. For this project, I used the card heights of 20, 15 and then 10. It's easier to start with a larger card height first and to gradually go down in size until you have reached the flatness of clay needed for your project.

Inspect you flattened tear drops closely. You're looking for trapped air pockets. Although, it's not obvious in the photo, I had several trapped air pockets on the top and bottom sides of the teardrops.

There are many techniques used to pop trapped air. The method I use was to cut an 'X' through the center of the air pocket. Next, just squeeze the sides of the pocket like a pimple until the air is removed.

Once the teardrops were flattened to the thickness I wanted, the next step was to shape the clay into a log. To shape, take the side that shows all the colors and roll into a log. Make sure you go slow, pinch and push the clay upon its self while rolling. No need to create more air pockets.

It is important to roll slowly. Once the log is about twice it's size, it's time to shorten the log a little by pushing in on the endings. Continue rolling and compacting the ends.

To compact, place your thumbs on both ends and press the log back together making it shorter. Roll out again, and press back together.

The log now needs to be flattened. Again, use the deck of cards technique. I graduated down from card sizes of 15, 10 and lastly 5.

The result will be a long flat piece. Cut this piece into 4 or 5 pieces and stack one on top of the other. In the photo you can see the resulting color mix. Notice how bold the colors are without blending.

Using a roller, roll over the stacked clay. This will further eliminate any trapped air pockets.

Now comes the easy part. Slice the stack into even pieces. The number of slices you create, equals the number of beads you will end up with. If you want your beads to end up small, cut your slices thin. For larger beads, cut the slices larger. Before committing to a bead size, now would be a good time to experiment with your cuts sizes.

To make beads, just bend the clay back and forth on itself so all the colors are represented.

I ended up with 14 beads and 3 pendants. There was also a small amount that will end up in my scrap clay pile.

Don't throw out scrap clay. Scraps come in handy. They can be used as a base for other jewelry

Here are the pendants. The pendants, were made using pieces which were cut off while making the stacks even.

I really like how the colors came out in the last pendant. I plan on using this pendant in a bracelet.

Well, that's about it. I will finish this project by making necklaces, bracelets and keychains.

Looks like I have some finishing work ahead. Time I get started.

Don't Throw Away That Old Clay

Don't throw away those old packs of polymer clay. With a little work your clay can be brought back to life. By using a few drops of mineral oil or trying out some of the other tips listed on this post, you can make your clay once again usable.

Sometimes when I'm looking for a specific color of clay I find that the clay is a few years old. In order to use this old clay, I must bring the clay back to a soft, flexible state. To do so, I chop the clay into small pieces, add a few drops of baby oil (mineral oil) to the chopped up pieces and then squish them back together. Next, just roll the clay out, squish, roll out again, repeat until the clay is conditioned.

Another way to condition clay is to warm it up. Take hot water in a pan and set aside. Place your packages of clay into a ziploc bag and place the ziplocked bag into the hot water.

Only allow the clay to remain in the water for a few minutes then remove and squeeze the clay to check if the clay is soft. If you leave the clay in the hot water for to long, the clay will begin to cure. If the clay is still not soft, place back in the hot water for a few minutes and check again.

Other ways to softer your clay include warming up the clay. This can be done by placing it under your arm, sitting on it, or even placing it in your bra. I have put clay under my arm and just carried on with everyday tasks for 15-30 min. Then, when checking the clay, I found it was soft and ready to condition.

Other people have recommended putting the clay in a ziplock back under a towel and beating it with a hammer. I haven't tried this technique yet but planning on seeing if it really works. Sounds easy enough.

There is also a tool on the market called. 'NeverKnead'. It's a arbor press that smashes the polymer clay over and over until it's pliable. I haven't used one so can't give a review of the tool. Looking at the video, it does seem to work as claimed.

Others have used Vaseline, food processors, placing clay in socks and beating it to death. If you have a technique you use, leave a comment and let me know. I'm always looking for easier ways to soften clay.

Pinterest - Grow a Web Presence

Attracting visitors to your website without using ads, affiliates or paying for search engine services like Google can be tough. That's why I've turned to Social Media.

Although I am using several Social Media services like Google+, Facebook and Twitter, I have found that Pinterest connects me with a lot more visitors.

I'm still under the belief that the Internet should remain free and no one should have to pay for a higher ranking on a search engine. Just my two cents worth.

When I first began using Pinterest, every week or so I started receiving emails announcing every time a pin was liked, repinned, or when someone started following one of my boards.

After about 6 months, my Pinterest email notifications began arriving more frequently. I also began receiving comments on my pins. I now find myself with a small following.

The photos shown in this blog are just a tiny sample of the photo's I have found on the Internet and pinned to my boards. I always try to make my pins personal to my specific tastes.

Some of my boards represent the style of jewelry I currently handcraft and sell at craft shows, fairs and flea markets. Other boards represent the style of jewelry I plan on adding to my collection in the near future.

Soon, I plan on expanding and selling my line on Etsy, Amazon and Ebay. If only there were 48 hours in a day. It just seems there is always something on my list of things to do. I never seem to catch up.

Mokume Gane Technique

Mokume Gane is a nice technique to use for showing off bold colors. Below are some of the basics I used to create this heart pendant,

1. Layer 4 contrasting colors of clay. I used 0.5 oz of Premo in the following colors: 18K Gold, Orange, Navy Blue and Spanish Olive. All layers were rolled using the #1 setting on my pasta machine.

2. Cut clay in half and place one half on top of the other. Roll through pasta machine again. Repeat cutting and rolling one more time. You should now have a total of 4 halves placed one on top of the other.

2. Using different sharp objects, pierce all the way through the layers. Use any object that will create holes, waves, pin points, etc. Basically, any interesting shape will do.

3. Lastly, using a very sharp blade, thinly slice at an angle through the layers of clay.

The second photo shows how the clay appeared after I pierced it with many different sharp objects.

The last photo shows the results after I began thinly slicing off pieces of clay. Check both sides after you slice off pieces. Sometimes the bottom of the slice looks better that the top.

Since there are numerous tutorials online explaining the complete technique, I have decided not to list all the step by step details here.

Rose Bowl Vendor - Pasadena California 91103

Forgot to mention last month, I have finally started selling at the biggest flea market in California, the Rose Bowl. It's so nice that the event is only a couple blocks from my home. Come look me up. I'm a permanent vendor located in a 10x10' spot in the middle of the crafting section just left of the Exit Gate B, booth 865.

I'm selling my handcrafted jewelry, some dream catchers I made and all the crafting supplies and jewelry kits I have on hand. Good thing I have a truck. I'm just so glad I decided to start selling here when I did. While purchasing my permanent spot, I was told there were only a few spots left. Whew! Almost missed out again. I'm now paid thru June. I know it's early but already I can't wait for the holidays. So, look for Teach Me Clay the 2nd Sunday every month at the Rose Bowl!

Now, I'm sitting down making my list of things I need to do in order to become ready for the change in seasons to summer. What colors will I use now? The fall and winter season was full of earth tones. Now, maybe some pastals and bold red, white, and blues. We'll see.

So, If you are in the area, look me up. I'll be there. I'm also doing the Pomona Fair in March and April. More info on that Fair will be issued in a different blog. Will also be doing the Burbank ARTS Festival in April and the Rotary Art show in May (more info will be in a different post).

Inspiration - Puddingstone Lake Visit

Late today on getting out my blog.

This day was quite pleasant. I spent the day at Pudingstone Lake with good friends, good music and great fun.

While walking around the lake, I did find some nice bamboo, sea shells and rocks.

Next time, I'll take a few photo's so you can see exactly what I picked up and how I will use my new finds.

Hope you had a wonderful Valentine's day weekend. It's nice to finally have the day fall on the weekend instead of during the middle of the week. I had a really nice one. Got a teddy bear, flowers, some balloons, and a nice dinner.

Not much else to say except taking time out of our craft to clear one's head and get a different prospective is always a great thing to do.

So, take a break and just enjoy the day. You'll thank me later.

Need Beads? Then Make Some

I was in the need for some colorful beads. There is a craft fair coming up soon and I want to apply for a space as a vendor.

One of the requirements is a photo of your booth. Since the holidays, my finished pieces have dwindled (yeah, good sales this last season).

Anyway, I need more bracelets and necklaces to fill out my display. My bead stash is low so it's time to make some additional beads. Time to replenish my stash.

I made these beautiful beads using Navy Blue, Pearl, Gold and Transparent Premo Accents Sculpey polymer clay's with a few drops of Adirondack alcohol inks of Current and Pesto colors. The clay/ink mixture was conditioned, squished together, rolled into a ball, hole punched and baked.

The next round of beads were created using a different technique. I conditioned Transparent, Pearl White, and Navy Blue Premo Accents polymer clays. In order to add a glitter affect, I also added a sheet of Mona Lisa's metal leaf foil.

As you can see in the next picture, the transparent clay was rolled flat. A piece of gold metal leaf foil was layered on top of the transparent clay.

The clay was then rolled through my pasta machine on #7 setting. Rolling on a thinner setting adheres the metal leaf foil and spreads it out among the translucent clay.

For the colors, I rolled a thin snake of blue and pearl clay's. Those colors were chopped into small pieces and sprinkled at random over the translucent/metal leaf foil mix (see next photo). Once sprinkled, I cut the clay into even slices. The even slices will insure beads of the same size.

Next, I squished the clay together and kept mixing until I began seeing colors emerge in the clay I liked. When you try this, don't blend too much. Remember, the more you blend the more detail you will lose in your finished pieces.

My new beads (first photo) were used for a bracelet I just completed.

The silver used for this new bracelet was from 18 gauge Artistic Wire (it's tarnish proof). The shapes of the wire were made using a tool called a Thing A Ma Jig. It's a metal board where you arrange pegs in the desired shape you want. Then, you wrap the wire around the pegs to form your new shape.

I also hammered the metal pieces down with a rubber mallot to take some of the smoothness out of the wire. The jump rings were added to strengthen the free handed shapes.

The clasps were handmade as well. Just a few turns with the pliers. I love using freehand patterns. I believe that's why my jewelry is received so well. My fans and followers like a unique look as well.

All and all, I'm very pleased with the outcome of my bracelet.

Polymer & Metal Clay - The Early Years

Do you remember your first time working with polymer or metal clay's? I didn't. Then, a few days ago I began cleaning out some old boxes in my garage.

I wanted to set aside old clothing/small appliances/knickknacks/etc., for a donation to my local thrift shop. Well, low and behold what did I find? A small box full of some of my first polymer and metal clay creations.

Too funny! Just look at the polymer clay, dull colors, burnt clay, bubbles leaching through the surface, no color distinction, very little imagination and uneven pieces. I'm still wondering why I keep those eggs (seen below)? I know I'm a hoarder at times, BUT really?

I don't know why I couldn't part with these beauties. These pieces should have been put into the trash bin instead of stored in a box and placed in my garage. What's the ole saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure", not in this case (hee, hee). Now what will the fate of these pieces be?

The colors used in this mess were, "Just Orange" and "Violet" Sculpey III polymer clay. What was I thinking? I just remember the online tutorial said to find two contrasting colors. At the time, I thought these would blend to make a fabulous result. Too bad I didn't really understand pallets and color wheels at that time. Guess you can tell.

Eggs? I covered a few and cracked many but would not quit trying. Until you understand layering, smoothing and using a cane, stay clear of eggs. Then, when you start just remember the first dozen are only practice. Don't use your best canes for them. Use the canes you're still practicing with. Believe me, you'll thank me later.

What's a girl to do with all these old 90's pieces? I surely can't just throw them out now. People have recently began seeking me out and telling their friends about my handmade, one of a kind pieces through word of mouth. So I've been thinking, these primitive creatures will serve as a reminder. Let's face it, if I ever decide to write a book, these beauties will be priceless. They will probably head the chapter, "Polymer & Metal Clay - The Early Years."

Are you laughing yet? We'll, there's more. Here's my early years with silver metal clay. Not as bad as the polymer clay. Still, very little imagination and uneven pieces. So glad I've matured since then.

I should also note that I found my old Ricoh digital camera in the garage as well. So, instead of taking really nice shots with my new camera, I decided to use my old Ricoh camera. Why not? Old primitive clay projects deserve an old primitive photo. Looking through the results, it's hard to believe I use to post like this back in the 90's?

Pendants & Earrings with Premo Accents

Yesterday, I crafted some pendants that will be displayed during a trunk show hosted at a friend's home next month. If you have been reading my blog, you will notice my brand is creating asymmetric jewelry using warm tones.

Now, on to the pendants. The polymer clay colors chosen were all Premo Accent colors of 1oz size bars. The colors used are Red Glitter, Bronze, 18-karat Gold, Copper and Translucent.

All bars were chopped into little pieces and conditioned. I find chopping them up first allows the conditioning process to go a little faster. Some people use a food processor for this step. I just use a sharp blade.

Next, I laid the colors side by side and ran them thru a pasta machine until the desired colors were reached (technique is called a Skinner Blend).

In the photo, you'll notice the clay became distorted while being run through the pasta machine. When this happens, I just cut off enough of the edges to make the clay a rectangle shape again.

Once your clay is blended into the colors you'd like to use, cut out slices and roll the pieces into balls. There is an example of this step here.

The final step is deciding if the is left as a bead, flattened or swirled. My beads were flattened or swirled.

It is a good idea to add the hole now. After the piece is baked, you'll need a drill to make a hole.

Viola! I'm done. Time to bake @ 275 degrees for 30 minutes per 1/4".

Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show

This year, I am committed to participating in as many Crafting Fairs, Bead Shows, Flea Markets and Swap Meets that I can. I am enjoying the contacts I'm meeting from my jewelry business and website so much that I feel it's time to spread my wings to the max.

When I expressed my plans to a friend, he told me about the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. So, we made plans and attended today. My friend is very familiar with the event since he use to bring cars and parts in as a vendor for many years.

Well friends, I had a ball. There is no way one could ever walk even half the rows of this event. Anything you could ever imagine, need or want is featured at this swap meet. I was actually a little overwhelmed today.

When this show is back in town March 1, I will definitely be there. I'm hoping to find a spot and come in this time as a vendor. Anytime I can put up my pop-up tent and show case my jewelry while interacting with people I do. This will just be another way to gain more experience as a jewelry designer.

Okay peeps, this post will be short. While attending the show, we walked as long and as far as we could and right now my feet hurt. Actually, the backs of my heels are what's a little tender. Next time, I will definitely invest in a nice pair of walking shoes.

Oh, and the cars were nice too.

Findings Before Baking & Mokume Gane

This photo is an example of inserting my handmade findings into my polymer clay pieces before baking them. My usual method was to make a hole for the finding and then bake or make no hole in my pieces and wire wrap after baking.

This simple set was completed in less than 2 hours. No need to wire wrap the pendants or the earrings.

Since I have begun using suede lace in place of chains or nylon string on some of my pieces, this technique is turning out to be quite useful and a great little time saver.

This set was made using Sculpey III polymer clay. The colors I used were lilac, ballerina, white, translucent and silver. The technique I used was Mokume Gane.

For those not familiar with Mokume Gane here are the basic steps. Keep in mind that Mokume Gane can get quite complicated depending on what you want your finished product to look like.

Mokume Gane very basics (search google for a more detailed explanation)

1. Stack several layers of polymer clay.

2. Find a heavily textured sheet and press firmly into your clay.

3. Remove the sheet. The pattern should push heavily through like this,

4. With your sharpest blade, cut slices as thin as you can across the top. A pattern will emerge. Choose the patterns you like best and cover something.

Examples of things I've seen covered are writing pens, silverware, dishes, picture frames, electrical outlets, etc. The project potential's are endless. I chose covering white polymer clay pieces shaped as pendants and earrings.

Fun with Dream Catcher's

Making a dream catcher has been very relaxing. The technique is quite easy once you get the hang of it.

To date, I have made 5 and given 4 away. Now that I've decided to add dream catcher's to my inventory, I wish I had taken photos or created a tutorial before giving them away. Oh well.

This is the one I'm working on now. It's almost complete. I just need to knot the back, cut off and glue all knots & feathers.

Now, I'm looking for small wind chime parts. A dream catcher I purchased years ago has wind chimes on it and I really like the look and sound. To make it fit my brand, I'll add handmade polymer clay beads, silver charms and findings. I'm still in the process of sketching out my final look.

This dream catcher was made for additional practice. Looks like I'll be giving this one away as well.
