Mark, a translator in the Drikung Songsten Library program in India, has translated a book on Lord Jigeten Sumgon's seven limb practice instructions. He will give a talk on these endearing personal insights from our lineage's founder. For instance Lord Jigten Sumgon would gather flowers in particular colors and arrange in precise geometric shapes according to the specific activity he was magnetizing with an offering.

KHENPO CHOEPHEL RINPOCHE is originally from Drigung Thil Monastery, the head monastery of the Drikung Kagyu lineage. He was ordained as a monk by Vajradhara Pachung Rinpoche at a young age. While at Drikung Thil, he received many teachings and instructions first from Pachung Rinpoche and later from Vajradhara Tenzin Nyima. In addition to receiving extensive teachings in Mahamudra from these two great masters, he is also a master in the ritual-traditions of Drikung Thil Monastery and has also received training in debate and philosophy at Drepung Monastery in Tibet. Before he left Drikung Thil for Nepal, Khenpo Rinpoche served as the chant master of the monastery.

On Electromagnetism and Trees

Perhaps three years ago Venerable gave me a challenge. I was to determine a way to capture useful electricity from trees, white pines to be more precise. One of her elders, clearly a powerful holy person, had been able to light electrical bulbs with trees and his medicine.

Trained in part as a physicist, I was skeptical, but proceeded. I tried various approaches using what I knew from physics, although I must say that the experience was like being trapped inside an egg that all my training indicated was real, with a phenomenon that lay outside the egg. I did not measure a voltage or current until I discovered that the tree trunks held this potential difference in relation to the soil. I also discovered that the soil was not a “uniform ground.” That was an important notion invented and implemented with great effort by physicists in the past few centuries. There would often be a potential difference (“voltage”) between two locations in the soil.

Last year I collaborated with Madeleine Piatt-Landolt. After a rainy night, a small group of us made a cornmeal offering to a tree, then performed the measurement. It was roughly double the usual measurement! Madeleine and I shrugged it off as probably dampness on the trunk leading to augmented electrical properties. Others went off to measure other trees with equipment I provided. One worksheet came back with written measurements.

Months later I kept noticing the worksheet on a shelf at the top of the stairs to my home office. No cornmeal offerings to any of the other trees. All the readings for these trees were the usual ones. And all of the trunks were a little wet. Wetness may not have been the cause of the increased voltage readings.

The worksheet reported electrical voltages between the trunks of trees and the surrounding soil. The mere fact that there are such voltages is of interest. The natural world is not at all neutral. One can often measure a potential difference, a voltage, between two different spots on the ground. The ionosphere is filled with charged particles, which mix in not-yet-known ways with lower levels of the atmosphere. Charged particles come from the sun to the ionosphere. The atmosphere is more and more positively charged as one goes higher above negatively charged earth. There is clearly an immense amount of subtle and unsubtle electrical activity on and around Mother Earth.

The increased voltage as a result of the cornmeal offering, being “with” the tree, appears maybe to be the cause. Trees may really respond. Further experiment will test this. It will be a little more challenging than the first measurements because the result requires a state of communion with the tree, and we will probably tend to be a little more self-conscious repeating the experiment. Yet we will do it, and eventually cross yet another bridge in understanding.

Sunday March 2 was a celebration of Losar or Tibetan New Year and the second Cherokee New Year. Prayers went out all day. And we started a new tradition! We gathered at Vajra Dakini to cover flying lanterns with prayers for peace, healing and Ven Dhyani's long life. Then with joy we sent them flying, the heat of bodhicitta or our open hearts raised the wind horse of energy that carries them infinitely aloft into the dharmakaya.

Peace Village Clan Pole is being Carved!

With master sculptor and carver Reinhard Reitzenstein, carving and sculpting are not just an art but a spiritual experience. This week, we excitedly watch Reinhard as he finishes the third of seven Cherokee clans to be represented on the Peace Village clan pole. So far, he's completed Wild Potato/Bear, Long Hair, and this week, Wolf.

What an incredible work of love and professional artistry!

We continue to raise funds for the finalization of his carvings and for a foundation in which to plant the clan pole. Once funds have been raised, we'll have a Pole raising ceremony, later in the year!

Ceremonial Fire at the Annual Elders Gathering

Sacred Fire

The Ceremonial Fire represents the one light from which all beings have arisen. During most ceremonies, a fire burns in a large pit in the center of the Arbor and during special ceremonies there will be seven small fires around the large fire. In the Cherokee tradition, the men build the Ceremonial Fires and carefully tend the seed of light. The women carry a fire within and carefully tend the seed of life. The Ywahoo Lineage Firekeepers at the Sunray Peace Village are trained for 3 years before being empowered to tend the Sacred Ceremonial Fire.

The Firekeepers stand as guardians over the Fire to ensure that it is fed properly and stays burning. They sit to the north of the Fire day and night in any weather regardless of the activities of the around them. As they watch over the Fire, they meditate and pray, often receiving visions of what is needed by the people or the land.

Every summer at the Elders Gathering, Indigenous Elders and guests from around the world come together at the fire to pray and practice for the purpose of peacemaking. Please consider joining us at this year’s Gathering: Path of Awakening, July 26-30^th.

The Elders Gathering is July 26-30 at the Sunray Peace Village. The theme is Path of Awakening: Magnetizing the Future You Wish.

After three days of teachings around the Sacred Fire, Elders will offer workshops on July 29. We are most honored this year to have Kumu Puna Kalama Dawson join us all the way from Hawaii.

She will present a workshop exploring the four core tones of the universe, descending tones of creation, and the basic steps of hula. Just as day and night turn, as time turns, so do the hands and feet in Hawaiian dance. We experience the foundation instrument of creation, and understand that there is a place for humankind in relation to these tones, and as a lightening connection between earth and sky. Together, we will chant and dance the four core tones descending, representing the universe, the sky, the earth, and the currents of ocean and magma moving under the earth and from the depths of the soul.

In the coming days and weeks, renowned sculptor Reinhard Reitzenstein is coming to the Peace Village to sculpt the Clan Pole.

Each year we return to the sacred fire in the Ceremonial Arbor of the Peace Village to listen as Native Elders speak about ancient teachings and prophecies that will help prepare for the years to come.

We begin Friday, July 26, with a sunrise opening ceremony where the sacred fire is lit. Teachings in the Arbor continue through the weekend. The healing ceremony Saturday night is open to all.

Monday, July 29, the Elders offer intimate Wisdom Seminars. Tuesday, July 30, is a one-day Introduction to Peacekeeper. It is a time for joyous celebration and wondrous insight!

We will teach the Dance of the Directions and the Sunray Basic Meditation to all interested attendees. Camping is available. Questions and answers here. We will also have delicious buffet-style meals you can purchase.

The Planting Moon Sunrise Celebration will be at the Brookline Reservoir, Brookline, MA Sunday, June 9 at 5:07 a.m. We will Stick Dance, Greet the Sun, do the Dance of the Directions, Meditation Practices, and make Offerings and Prayers. Bring your chairs, cushions, and rattles.

As spiritual people, we have the opportunity to offer prayers energizing personal and planetary healing. Venerable Dhyani Ywahoo advises us that it is vital at this time to make prayers of apology, appreciation and gratitude! Let us choose a path of harmony and unity through prayers. We are all connected--those that swim, fly, crawl, and walk upon the Earth! Let us make prayers that decsion-making is good for all nations and will benefit our children, future generations, and all those with whom we share this planet.

For those unable to attend, join in by lighting a candle and making prayers. Offer a glass of water imbued with prayers and offer it to the land or to a body of water.

Celebration of Late Planting, and potluck lunch, Sunday June 9

Dear Friends,

This coming Sunday, June 9, lighting of the Sacred Fire will be at 9 AM and all are welcome! Please invite your family, friends, children for this special planting! For the Early Planting we made offerings in the community garden and for the Late Planting, we will continue with the planting of Corn, Beans and Squash in the Medicine Garden. Offering the dance and prayers at the Fire, then processing together to the center of the Peace Village, we will continue to offer the dance and prayers, planting the Corn, Beans and Squash in the traditional way as Venerable Dhyani has taught!

Venerable Dhyani writes in Voices of Our Ancestors, "In the traditional way of life gardens were a ceremonial event for all, an opportunity to give to the Earth as well as to receive. The seeds of good food are also the seeds of good relationship, so caretaking the garden is symbolic of caretaking all beings. The garden can be an offering to all. The sacred rituals are to maintain harmonious balance of the energy currents of sun, moon, Earth, the entire universe, so that seed's bounty can be brought forth."

We will gather again at the Sacred Fire at 12:30 for closing.

Pot Luck together at 1 PM! Please bring a dish to share, remembering that the kitchen is not open yet so we will need to bring our own dishes, utensils.

Bring your medicine objects, rattle, drum and also your gardening clothes!
