Continuing the tremendous success of the JPX, Ernie Ball Music Man® introduces the latest evolution in the John Petrucci line of signature guitars. The JPXI is the newest collaborative effort between John Petrucci and the Music Man research and development team. The JPXI features a combination of top appointments from JPX and BFR Petrucci signature instruments. Most notably, the JPXI neck has been streamlined to a symmetric, extra slim profile featuring a flatter 20" radius, medium jumbo stainless steel frets with a finished mahogany neck and an ebony fingerboard. Combined with a solid alder body, mahogany tone block and maple top, the JPXI has become the ultimate rock machine. Similar to that of the JP BFR line, controls include two three-way toggles perfectly wired for the Custom Dimarzio LiquiFire and Crunch Lab humbuckers, in addition to a redesigned Wide-Spread Pivot tremolo with a Music Man/Fishman piezo system bridge pickup.

The JPXI guitars will be available in 6 and 7-string versions, adorned with chrome hardware, mother of pearl inlays and a new onyx finish.

The JPXI-6 is the newest collaborative effort between John Petrucci and the Music Man R&D team. The JPXI features a combination of top appointments from JPX and BFR Petrucci signature instruments. PRS 408 pickups were designed to extend the guitar’s tonal spectrum by narrowing the field of the bass pickup to increase its focus and widening the field of the treble pickup to increase its sound field (hence their asymmetric appearance). This pickup configuration (comprised of four coils and offering eight sounds) stems back to Paul’s experimentation on the Sorcerer’s Apprentice guitars in the early 1980’s. Thanks to the simple but versatile switching system featuring mini-toggle switches that provide numerous combinations of humbucking and singlecoil tones, the 408 Maple Top and Standard provide stunning articulation and musical clarity.

It is like The Rev was serenading us from beyond with his writing on 'Nightmare,' which was carried out by Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who was one of The Rev's favorite skinsmen.

The Rev's legacy is impressive and will undoubtedly be long lasting to the horde of kids that wear the band's signature 'death bat' in some form.

But the powerful Corruption Eradication Commission said that Mr Widodo, widely considered clean in a notoriously graft-ridden country, had now handed the gift to them.
"We will check if there is any conflict of interest or if there was an exchange of favours," commission spokesman Johan Budi said.

"The screening process takes up to 30 days, and after that we will decide whether to return the guitar to him or confiscate it." During the TV appearance Widodo, an anti-establishment figure who was elected in September, said he was a huge fan of Metallica, whose hits include Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. He also listed Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Napalm Death as among his favourite bands.

His spokesman Eko Hariadi said the guitar was the first gift Widodo had received since becoming governor, he had handed it over voluntarily to be checked and there was no conflict of interest. "The governor loves rock music. So he was certainly happy to receive it, it's like getting a tennis racket from Boris Becker," the spokesman said, referring to the German tennis great.

"To him, it was a souvenir and there was no exchange for favours."

Pembentukan & Karir Indie (1999-2003)

Band ini dibentuk pada tahun 1999 di Huntington Beach, California dengan anggota asli M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, The Rev dan Matt Wendt. memberi nama bandnya yang referensinya berasal dari cerita Cain dan Abel dari Bible, meskipun demikian, mereka bukanlah band agamis. Saat pembentukannya, masing-masing anggota band ini memakai nama samaran yang juga merupakan nama panggilan mereka saat bersekolah di Sekolah Menegah Atas. Sebelum merilis album debut mereka, band ini merekam dua demo pada tahun 1999 dan 2000. Album pertama mereka, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, direkam ketika para anggota band masih berumur delapan belas tahun dan juga masih bersekolah di sekolah menengah atas. album ini pada awalnya dirilis oleh perusahaan label pertama mereka, Good Life Record pada tahun 2001. Setelah gitaris Synyster Gates bergabung dengan band, pada akhir 1999 masuk ketika ia berusia 18 tahun. Lagu "To End the Rapture" direkam ulang dengan menampilkan anggota penuh band. Album ini kemudian dirilis ulang pada Hopeless Records pada tahun 2002.

Band ini lalu mulai menerima pengakuan, mereka tampil dengan band-band seperti Mushroomhead dan Shadows Fall dan bermain di Take Action Tour. Setelah bassis keempat mereka, Johnny Christ bergabung secara permanen, mereka merilis album Waking the Fallen di Hopeless Records pada bulan Agustus 2003. Band menerima pengakuan oleh Billboard dan The Boston Globe, dan juga bermain di "Vans Warped Tour". Pada tahun 2004, Avenged Sevenfold mengadakan tur kembali di "Vans Warped Tour" dan merekam video untuk lagu "Unholy Confessions "yang masuk tangga lagu di MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. City of Evil (2005-2007)

Tahun 2005, Amerika Serikat tengah jenuh dengan musik hip-hop dan pop yang merajalela, lalu Avenged Sevenfold merilis album mereka City of Evil tepatnya pada tanggal 8 Juni, 2005. Hits single Bat Country merupakan lagu metal/rock pertama yang merajai MTV TRL. Mereka mempopulerkan kembali solo gitar dengan duet gitaris Synyster Gates dan Zacky Vengeance yang benar-benar memanaskan area moshpit. Album tersebut mendapat sertifikat gold dan memenangkan predikat Best New Artist in a Video di MTV VMA 2006 untuk lagu Bat Country.

Avenged Sevenfold (2007-2008)

Tahun 2007, mereka kembali masuk studio untuk merekam lagu terbaru mereka untuk studio album ke-5 mereka. Awal Agustus 2007, mereka menjalani tur Asia Pasifik mereka, dan sempat mampir di Indonesia dan memainkan lagu mereka pertama kali di depan publik. Lagu yang berjudul Almost Easy tersebut mendapat sambutan hangat dari penggemar di seluruh dunia. Ketika itu band punk Jogjakarta Endang Soekamti didaulat menjadi band pembuka. Tahun 2008 ini, mereka berpartisipasi sebagai headliners di tour Taste of Chaos bersama dengan Bullet for My Valentine, Atreyu, Blessthefall dan Idiot Pilot. Ketika tour, mereka merekam sebuah DVD yang mengandung 6 lagu baru mereka. Tanggal 22 Oktober 2008, Avenged Sevenfold kembali manggung di Indonesia masih dengan event organizer yang sama yakni Java Musikindo dan kali ini band heavy metal Jibril didaulat menjadi band pembuka.Berkas:City of evil.jpg Avenged sevenfold tau konser di gresik di desa metatu mantep.

Live In The LBC & Diamonds in the Rough (2008-2010)

Album yang dirilis pada 16 September, 2008 ini berisi 102 menit DVD dan 52 menit CD.

Di album ini terdapat dua lagu lama yaitu "Afterlife" dan "Almost Easy". Namun kedua lagu tersebut tidak sama persis dengan lagu aslinya. Pada lagu "Afterlife" ditambahi permainan biola yang lebih banyak, sedangkan lagu "Almost Easy" yang berbeda adalah mixing lagunya. Selain itu terdapat juga lagu "Walk" yang merupakan cover dari Pantera dan "Flash of the Blade" yang merupakan cover dari Iron Maiden.

Pada tanggal 16 Juli, majalah Kerrang! (edisi 1219) mengeluarkan sebuah CD gratis berjudul "Maiden Heaven: A Tribute to Iron Maiden" untuk menghormati album dari salah satu band heavy metal terbesar di dunia yaitu Iron Maiden. Matt Shadows berkomentar, "Maiden are by far the best live band in the world and their music is timeless," dan "This also gives us a chance to expose this great song to some of our younger fans who maybe aren't as familiar with Iron Maiden."

Nightmare (2010)

Setelah beberapa lama mereka mengeluarkan single "Nightmare" pada 18 Juli 2010 yang nantinya akan masuk kedalam album baru mereka. Dalam single ini mereka memanggil Mike Portnoy dari Dream Theater untuk menggantikan posisi The Rev yang meninggal pada 28 Desember 2009.

Jimi Hendrix ("Sang Dewa Gitar")

Gitaris rock zaman kini yang mencari guru abadi atau sekadar melongok puncak permainan hanya akan menemui satu orang: Jimi Hendrix. Kepadanyalah, dan dari dia sajalah, segala teknik yang ada sekarang dirujukkan. Simak pengakuan-pengakuan yang dipublikasikan majalah Guitar (November 1997): "Dialah hal terbesar yang pernah kulihat," kata Stevie Ray Vaughn, . gitaris bluesyang tewas dalam kecelakaan helikopter pada 1990.

"Sependapat, Keith Richards, pemetik gitar The Rolling Stones, menyatakan bahwa Stevie "memainkan ramuan materi yang sangat menarik". Dan Eric Clapton, salah seorang gitaris yang pada 1970-an dijuluki dewa gitar, mengakui dengan Jimi-lah "aku akhirnya merasa bertemu orang lain yang bisa kuajak bicara dan bermain".

Fenomena itu sebenarnya paradoks dengan kenyataan bahwa Jimi sudah tak ada lagi. Ia meninggal di Rumah Sakit St. Mary Abbot, London, karena berlebihan menelan obat bius. Konon, ia sengaja mengakhiri hidupnya sendiri (pesan-pesan dan pernyataan-pernyataannya sebelum itu, seperti dikutip Q Encyclopedia of Rock Stars, antara lain, berupa: "Aku sudah mati sejak lama.")

Namun jika memperhatikan benar, Jimi-lah yang "menemukan" hampir semua kemungkinan eksplorasi bermain gitar. Pada masanya, ketika aksesoris sound masih sangat terbatas, ia sudah memainkan wah dan distorsi secara sempurna — yang lalu menjadi fondasi rock "n roll di masa-masa sesudahnya. Ia bahkan melengkapi diri dengan jurus-jurus akrobatik, misalnya memetik senar dengan gigi.

Lahir pada 27 November 1942 di Seattle, Amerika Serikat, dengan nama Johnny Allen Hendrix, Jimi menaruh perhatian pada musik, khususnya gitar, sejak kecil. Jagoan gitar pada masa-masa itu, seperti B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, dan Robert Johnson, menjadi idolanya. Gitar pertama, jenis akustik, diperolehnya dari ayahnya pada musim panas 1958. Dengan modal itu ia bergabung dengan The Velvetones. Dan sejak itu jalan hidupnya seperti sudah digariskan.

Dengan The Velvetones Jimi hanya ikutan tiga bulan. Pada musim panas berikutnya, berbekal gitar listrik baru yang diperolehnya, lagi-lagi, dari ayahnya, Jimi bergabung dengan The Rocking Kings. Sesudah itu Jimi sempat mengikuti wajib militer, dan membentuk band di barak, tapi tak lama. Cedera menyebabkannya diberhentikan dari dinas. Perubahan besar terjadi ketika, sebagai gitaris pocokan yang sudah kenyang bermain dengan bermacam artis, pada 1966, ia bertemu Chas Chandler, pembetot bas Animals — band yang punya hit The House of the Rising Sun.

Chas, yang memutuskan keluar dari Animals dan memilih pekerjaan baru sebagai manajer, membawa Jimi ke Inggris. Di sana Chas mempertemukan Jimi dengan Mitch Mitchell, dramer, dan Noel Redding, pemain gitar yang diminta membetot bas. Bersama mereka berdua, Jimi lalu membentuk Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Experience cepat melambung. Single pertamanya, Hey Joe, sempat 10 minggu ngendon di tangga lagu-lagu Inggris, mencapai posisi tertinggi keenam pada awal 1967. Sukses ini segera disusul album Are You Experience?. Inilah rekaman yang disebut-sebut sebagai kompilasi baru musik yang sama sekali radikal; album yang menyuarakan semangat generasi pada masa itu.

Tapi popularitas di negeri sendiri baru diperoleh ketika Jimi berkesempatan manggung di Monterey International Pop Festival, County Fairground, Monterey, Kalifornia, pada 1967. Di sinilah Jimi memamerkan aksi teatrikal yang fenomenal: membakar dan menghancurkan gitarnya.

Bendera karier Jimi terkerek tinggi-tinggi sejak itu. Berturut-turut, dalam waktu kurang dari setahun, antara 1968-1969, bersama Mitch dan Noel, ia merilis Axis: Bold as Love dan album ganda Electric Ladyland. Pada album yang disebut terakhir Jimi, yang akhirnya memiliki studio sendiri, mengerahkan seluruh kemampuannya sebagai gitaris maupun sebagai operator-sound engineer. Sukses besar. Tapi korban tak terhindarkan: Experience bubar.

Jimi memang tak lalu ikut tenggelam. Ia bahkan masih sempat meramaikan festival band yang hingga kini tak terlupakan dalam sejarah musik rock: Woodstock Music & Art Fair. Waktu itu tahun 1969. Jimi, yang tampil bersama Gypsy Sons & Rainbows (antara lain diperkuat Mitch), mengantongi bayaran 125 ribu dolar Amerika Serikat, tertinggi di antara para artis lain.

Sebuah bayaran yang pantas, tapi, rupanya, itulah penampilan akbar terakhir bagi Jimi. Setahun kemudian ia lebih memilih meninggalkan semuanya, selama-lamanya. Secara fisik, sih. Soalnya, pengaruh Jimi justru tetap hidup hingga kini.
Joe Satriani (" Steve Vai: selama Joe Satriani tetap berkarya, saya akan tak akan kehilangan inspirasi")

Joe Satriani, pertama kali belajar gitar pada saat berumur 14 tahun. Pada umur 15 tahun, Joe sudah mengajar gitar (selama 3 tahun) kepada beberapa muridnya yang antara lain adalah Steve Vai, Kirk Hammet (Metallica) dan Larry LaLonde (Primus). Dapat dibayangkan betapa tekunnya dan cepatnya Joe mendalami permainan gitarnya.

Sambil mengajar di Second Hand Guitar, Berklee, Joe merilis albumnya yang pertama tahun 1986 yang berjudul Not Of This Earth. Tahun berikutnya, Surfing With The Alien dirilis dan mendapatkan gold dan platinum sales. Tahun 1989 Surfing in a Blue Dream pun dirilis dan mencapai angka 750.000 keping untuk penjualannya dan masuk ke nominasi Grammy Awards. Tahun 1992 The Extremist dirilis yang juga masuk nominasi Grammy Awards dan mencapai peringkat 24 di Billboard chart.

Tahun berikutnya, Time Machine (dobel CD) dirilis. Di tahun 1995 album yang berjudul Joe Satriani dirilis dan lagu My World masuk nominasi Grammy Awards. Tahun 1998 Joe merilis albumnya yang ke delapan berjudul Crystal Planet.

Di tahun 2000 Joe merilis album Engines Of Creation. Di album ini Joe melakukan eksperimen dengan rekaman menggunakan rhytm-rhytm yang dibuat di komputer. Tahun 2001 Joe merilis album live nya Live in San Fransisco.

Selain merilis album solonya, Joe Satriani juga merupakan penggagas diadakannya G3. Bersama Steve Vai, Joe sudah beberapa kali mengadakan konser G3 dengan dewa gitar lainnya seperti Eric Johnson (1996), Adrian Leggs, Kenny Wayne Shepherd dan Robert Fripp (1997), Michael Schenker dan Uli John Roth dengan Brian May sebagai Guest Star untuk show di London dan Patrick Rondat di Perancis (1998) dan John Petrucci (2001).

Joe Satriani juga berpartisipasi dalam proyek Merry Axemas-nya Steve Vai dan memainkan satu lagu Silent Night yang di aransemen ulang dan juga pernah mengisi posisi gitar untuk Deep Purple di tahun 1990-an.
Steve Vai ("Dewa gitar yang flamboyan dan serba bisa")

Siapa yang tidak kenal dengan dewa gitar yang satu ini? Permainannya mulai dari blues, jazz, rock sampai klasik dan ethnic music. Permainan gitarnya pun tidak terbatas pada komunitas gitar saja tetapi juga bagi orang-orang awam yang tidak mendalami gitar.

Pada umur 6 tahun, Steve mulai belajar piano. Pada umur 10 tahun, Steve mulai belajar bermain akordeon. Pada umur 13 tahun barulah Steve mulai mendalami gitar dan sejak saat itu lahirlah seorang dewa gitar yang baru.

Steve Vai mengawali karirnya dengan album debutnya Flex-Able Leftovers pada tahun 1984. Pada tahun 1990, Steve merilis album keduanya yang berjudul Passion and Warfare.Album ini mendapat pengakuan internasional dan Steve memenangkan polling pembaca majalah Guitar Player dalam 4 kategori yang berbeda.

Album Steve yang ketiga berjudul Sex & Religion dirilis tahun 1993 dan album keempatnya Alien Love Secrets dirilis tahun 1995. Pada tahun 1996 album kelima Steve Fire Garden dirilis.

Tahun 1999, Steve meluncurkan album keenamnya yang berjudul Ultra Zone. Dalam album ini Steve lebih banyak memfokuskan dirinya dalam komposisi lagu dan bereksperimen dengan gitarnya.

Tahun 2001 album The Seventh Song dirilis dan album ini berisi lagu-lagu slow/ballad yang pernah dirilis Steve dengan ditambah beberapa lagu baru. Dan di tahun 2001 Alive in an Ultra World pun dirilis.

Steve Vai juga pernah memproduksi 2 album Natal yang berjudul Merry Axemas Vol.1 dan Merry Axemas Vol.2, juga konser G3 bersama Joe Satriani dan Eric Johnson/Kenny Wayne Shepherd dan terakhir John Petrucci turut juga bergabung dalam G3.

Belakangan ini Steve Vai lebih memfokuskan diri bereksperimen pada permainan gitarnya dan sekarang ini band Steve Vai ditambah seorang pemain bass yang sudah tidak asing lagi buat fans-fans rock tahun 80-an, Billy Sheehan. Belum pasti kapan album barunya akan beredar, kita tunggu saja… liberty and justice for all!
John Petrucci ("Salah satu gitaris progressive yang paling popular")

John besar di Long Island, tepatnya di King park, dimana dia, john myung & Kevin moore bersekolah bersama. John mulai Belajar gitar ketika masih berumur 12 tahun (sebelumnya dia pernah belajar ketika berumur 8 tahun tetapi menyerah ketika Dia melihat kakak perempuannya harus begadang tiap malam belajar main organ. Dia tidak merencanakan untuk menjadi seperti Itu, Dia belajar gitar sepulang sekolah dan akhirnya dia menjadi tidak tertarik lagi).

Namun dia mulai banyak terpengaruh Oleh permainan gitar dari gitaris semacam Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Iron Maiden, Steve Ray Vaughn, dan grup besar Semacam Yes, Rush, Dixie dregs dan lain lain dia mulai bertekad untuk mencapai level permainan seperti mereka.

Sebagaimana kemunculan musik trash metal yang membuat John tertarik, maka John juga memperluas influence nya dengan Mendengarkan Metallica & Queensryche. John merasa membutuhkan tantangan yang lebih dalam tehnik guitar oleh karena itu Dia banyak mengadaptasi hammering speed & melodic style dari gitaris-gitaris seperti Steves (Steve Morse & Steve Vai), The Als (Allan Holdsworth & Al Dimeola) Mike Stern, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon & Eddie Van Halen.

Pendidikan musiknya dimulai dengan berbagai kelas teori musik yang dia ambil ketika high school. Dia belajar secara otodidak, tetapi dia sempat menerima beberapa pelajaran gitar yang dia ambil ketika dia masuk ke Berklee College of Music di Boston, dimana dia Mempelajari komposisi jazz dan harmoni.

Ketika di Berklee John Petrucci dan John Myung yang juga belajar di berklee bertemu dengan Mike Portnoy, dan mereka mulai membuat band yang diberi nama Majesty yang nantinya kemudian berganti nama menjadi Dream Theater. John sudah merekam 7 album dengan Dream Theater, dan dia juga banyak terlibat dengan beberapa proyek sampingan seperti Liquid Tension Experiment Dengan Tony Levin, Age of Impact, dan bahkan game Sega Saturn yang disebut Necronomicon, dan juga terakhir dia terlibat dalam proyek G3 Bersama Joe Satriani dan Steve Vai. Kecintaan dia pada menulis lirik dikombinasikan dengan gaya komposisi yang unik dari progressive fusion Mengasah bentuk musik dari Dream Theater.

John tinggal bersama istrinya Rena, dan 3 anaknya SamiJO, Reny, dan Kiara di New York. Ketika dia tidak bermain gitar dia banyak menghabiskan Waktunya dengan istri dan anak-anaknya dengan bermain skating, bersepeda, berolahraga dan menontong film.

John sedang merencanakan membuat solo albumnya yang pertama. Lagu-lagu barunya yang dia mainkan ketika bersama G3 juga akan ada di solo album tersebut. Jaws of Life (sebelumnya I.B.S.), Damage Control and Glasgow Kiss. Dia melibatkan beberapa musisi seperti Dave LaRue pada bass, Dave DiCenso dan Tony Verderosa pada drum.
Yngwie Malmsteen ("Pahlawan dan pelopor gitaris shredder sedunia dari Swedia")

Yngwie Malmsteen merupakan pelopor yang melahirkan seluruh gitaris shredder yang kami tampilkan di website ini. Setelah Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) pertama kali membawakan tembang "Eruption" pada tahun 1978 yang memperkenalkan teknik "two handed tapping", Yngwie meluncurkan album klasik baroque shred debutnya "Rising Force" yang mengegerkan komunitas gitar rock, menciptakan standar baru untuk kecepatan & keahlian dalam bermain. Warna "Neo-Classical" yang di bawahkan Yngwie adalah berdasarkan struktur komposisi dari J.S Bach (1685-1750) dan Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840).

Setelah itu muncul para gitaris shredder yang menghasilkan sekian banyak album yang sukses. Hampir setiap minggu muncul gitaris baru yang mengklaim dirinya sebagai gitaris baru yang paling cepat di dunia. Sebagai contoh: Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Richie Kotzen, Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Greg Howe, dll. Tidak bisa dipungkiri lagi bahwa Yngwie merupakan pahlawan gitar yang patut diacungi jempol.

Pernikahan ayah Yngwie (seorang kapten tentara) dan ibunya (Rigmor - seniman) diakhiri dengan penceraian tidak lama setelah Yngwie lahir. Di samping itu Yngwie juga memiliki seorang kakak perempuan bernama Ann Louise dan kakak lelaki Bjorn. Yngwie terlahir sebagai anak bungsu yang liar, tidak bisa diatur dan ceria.

Pada awalnya Yngwie mencoba untuk mempelajari piano dan trumpet tetapi ia tidak dapat menguasai alat musik tersebut. Acoustic guitar (gitar bolong) yang dibeli oleh ibunya pada waktu dia berusia 5 tahun juga tidak disentuh Yngwie dan dibiarkan bergelantung di dinding.

Sampai akhirnya pada tgl 18 September 1970, Yngwie melihat sebuah acara spesial mengenai meninggalnya Jimi Hendrix. Di situ Yngwie yang masih 17 tahun tsb menyaksikan bagaimana Jimi Hendrix menghasilkan bunyi feedback guitar dan membakar gitarnya di depan penonton. Pada hari wafatnya Jimi Hendrix tsb lahirlah permainan gitar Yngwie.

Yngwie yang penasaran tersebut kemudian membeli sebuah Fender Stratocaster murah, mencoba memainkan tembangnya Deep Purple dan menghabiskan banyak waktu untuk mengetahui rahasia dari alat instrumen dan musiknya sendiri. Kekaguman Yngwie terhadap Ritchie Blackmore (gitaris Deep Purple) yang dipengaruhi oleh musik klasik dan kekaguman terhadap kakak perempuannya yang sering memainkan komposisi Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, dan Mozart, memberikan ide kepada Yngwie untuk menggabungkan musik klasik tersebut dengan musik rock. Yngwie terus bermain seharian penuh sampai tidurpun dia masih tetap bersama gitarnya.

Pada usia 10 tahun, Yngwie menggunakan nama kecil dari ibunya "Malmsteen", mengfokuskan seluruh energi dia dan berhenti bersekolah. Di sekolah Yngwie dikenal sebagai pembuat onar dan sering berantem, tetapi pintar dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris dan seni. Ibunya yang menyadari bakat musiknya yang unik, mengizinkan Yngwie tinggal di rumah dengan rekaman dan gitarnya. Setelah menyaksikan violinis Gideon Kremer membawakan komposisi Paganini: 24 Caprices di televisi, Yngwie akhirnya mengetahui bagaimana cara mengawinkan musik klasik dengan skill permainan dan karismanya.

Yngwie dan beberapa temannya merekam 3 lagu demo dan dikirim ke studio rekaman CBS Swedia, tetapi rekaman tersebut tidak pernah digubris atau diedarkan. Oleh karena frustasinya, Yngwie menyadari bahwa dia harus meninggalkan Swedia dan mulai mengirimkan demo rekaman dia ke berbagai studio rekaman di luar negeri. Salah satu dari demo tape Yngwie ternyata jatuh ke tangan konstributor Guitar Player dan pemilik Shrapnel Records: Mike Varney. Akhirnya Yngwie mendapat undangan ke Los Angeles untuk bergabung dengan band terbaru Shrapnel: "Steeler" dan seterusnya yang disebut sebagai sejarahnya. Pada bulan February 1983 Yngwie berangkat dari Swedia ke Los Angeles dengan bekal keahlian dan gaya permainan barunya.

Selanjutnya permainan Yngwie dikenal dunia dengan permainannya yang sangat cepat di intro lagu "Hot On Your Heels". Yngwie kemudian pindah ke group band Alcatrazz, sebuah band yang bergaya "Rainbow" dan didirikan oleh penyanyi Graham Bonnett. Walaupun telah bergabung dengan Alcatrazz yang menampilkan sekian banyak solo hebat di lagu "Kree Nakoorie", "Jet to Jet," dan "Hiroshima Mon Amour", Yngwie masih merasa terlalu dibatasi oleh band itu sendiri. Akhirnya Yngwie berpikir bahwa hanya album sololah yang menjadi solusi terbaik.

Album solo pertama Yngwie: Rising Force (kini dinobatkan sebagai kitab musik rock Neo-Classical) berhasil memasuki nomor 60 di tangga Billboard charts untuk musik instrumental gitar tanpa berbau komersil. Album ini juga memenangkan nominasi Grammy untuk Instrumental Rock Terbaik. Tidak lama kemudian Yngwie terpilih sebagai Gitaris Pendatang Baru Terbaik di berbagai majalah dan media, Gitaris Terbaik Tahun Itu, dan Rising Force menjadi Album Terbaik untuk tahun itu juga.

Pada 22 June 1987 mendekati ultah Yngwie yang ke-24, Yngwie mengalami kecelakaan dengan mobil Jaguarnya yang mengakibatkan dia koma hampir seminggu. Penyumbatan darah pada otak Yngwie juga menyebabkan tangan kanannya tidak berfungsi. Karena takut akan karirnya yang akan berakhir itu, Yngwie dengan susah payah mengikuti terapi untuk memulihkan kembali tangan kanannya. Setelah itu Yngwie mendapat cobaan lagi dari kematian ibunya di Swedia akibat penyakit kanker yang menghabiskan banyak biaya medical. Jika Yngwie orang lain, mungkin sudah menyerah dengan nasib seperti itu, tetapi Yngwie justru berubah dan kembali ke musiknya dengan semangat tinggi.

Setelah itu Yngwie meluncurkan album yang laris manis seperti Odyssey, Eclipse, Fire & Ice, Seventh Sign, I Can’t Wait, Magnum Opus, Inspiration, Facing the Animal, Alchemy, War To End All Wars dan akhirnya Yngwie berhasil mewujudkan cita-citanya untuk bermain bersama sebuah Orkestra penuh di salah satu album terbarunya: Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in Eb minor, Op. 1 (tahun 1998).

Ketika merelease albumnya Eclipse (1990), Yngwie sempat tour dan membuat konser yang sukses di Indonesia (Jakarta, Solo, & Surabaya). Rencananya pada bulan July 2001 ini Yngwie juga akan konser kembali di Indonesia, namun dibatalkan karena pemerintah USA & istrinya menasehati Yngwie akan keamanan politik di Indonesia. Padahal tiket Yngwie sudah sempat laku keras di Indonesia, penggemar Yngwie di Indonesia boleh kecewa. Kapan lagi Yngwie akan konser di Indonesia apabila keadaan politik Indonesia masih seperti ini?

Album-album berikutnya adalah Attack!! yang memuat nomor hits instrumental Baroque & Roll. Pada tahun 2003, Yngwie diajak bergabung dalam formasi G3 bersama Joe Satriani dan Steve Vai yang menelurkan 1 album dan 1 video. Setelah selesai tur bersama G3, ia merampungkan album terbarunya Unleash The Fury. Album tersebut direlease diawal taun 2005.
Paul Gilbert ("Salah satu dewa gitar dengan permainan paling cepat dan bersih")

Paul Gilbert merupakan salah satu dewa gitar seperti halnya Steve Vai, Yngwie, John Petrucci lainnya. Sebelumnya Paul dikenal melalui group bandnya Mr.Big, rekaman Mr.Big yang laku keras turut membesarkan nama Paul di dunia musik rock.

Paul sendiri sudah cukup mengegerkan dunia gitaris pada tahun 86-87 sebagai pemain gitar tercepat di dunia ketika Paul masih bergabung dengan group band Racer X. Teknik permainannya telah sempurna saat ia baru menginjak 17 tahun itu.

Pada usia 5 tahun (1971) Paul sudah mulai mempelajari gitarnya, 10 tahun berikutnya (1981) Paul coba mengirim demo rekamannya ke produser Mike Varney dan di luar dugaanya Mike sangat mengagumi permainannya di samping Tony Macalpine.

Pada tahun 1984 Paul pindah ke LA dan melanjutkan sekolah gitarnya ke GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) dan kini telah menjadi instruktur sekolah gitar bergengsi ini.

Pada tahun 1986 dia bergabung dengan band pertamanya Racer X dengan album debutnya "Street Lethal ", kemudian "Second Heat" (1987) & "Live! Extreme Volume" (1988).

Pada tahun 1989 Paul meninggalkan Racer X dan bergabung dengan group band MR.BIG dengan pemain bass yang disegani "Billy Sheehan", vocalis Eric Martin dan drummer Pat Torpey.

Mereka meluncurkan album pertamanya "MR.BIG" dan MR.BIG tampil untuk pertama kalinya di Jepang pada bulan Oktober.

Selanjutnya Paul meluncurkan album berikutnya: "Live! Raw Like Sushi" (1990), "Mr Big - Lean into it" (1991), "Mr.Big - San Francisco Live" (1992), "Racer X - Live Extreme Volume 2? (1992), "Mr.Big - Bump Ahead" (1993), "Mr.Big - Live! Raw Like Sushi 2? (1994), "HEY MAN" & " The best of MR.BIG" (1996), "Hard Rock Cafe", " Live At Budokan " & solo " King of Club" (1997).

Lagu "To Be With You" (dari Album "Lean Into It") menduduki posisi pertama di majalah Billborad USA selama 3 minggu.

Pada tahun 1998 Paul tampil pertama kali di Jepang dengan solo albumnya. Paul meluncurkan album solo "Flying Dog". Tahun 1999 Paul kembali ke Jepang dan meluncurkan album solo kedua "Beehive Live" dan album ketiga Racer X "Technical Difficulties".

Tahun 2003 album Burning Organ dirilis, kali ini masuk ke label Indonesia dibawah naungan Staria Enterprise. Namun album berikutnya, Acoustic Samurai tidak lagi di Staria, melainkan berpindah ke label Variant Music. Kemudian Paul menggelar promo tur album "Spaceship One" hingga ke Indonesia. Hal ini disambut antusias oleh penggemar-penggemarnya, pasalnya banyak artis asal Amerika yang menarik diri karena takut disweeping oleh pihak-pihak tertentu.
Nuno Bettencourt ("Dewa gitar yang mempelopori warna Funky Metal")

Nuno Bettencourt merupakan gitaris rock yang terbaik dalam permainan ritemnya. Beberapa gitaris lain yang dapat menandingi permainan ritemnya dapat terhitung misalnya: John Petrucci, Darren Housholder dan beberapa pemain funk metal lainnya.

Kekreatifan Nuno dalam menciptakan teknik permainan baru telah dikenal sejak album pertama dan kedua group bandnya Extreme yaitu: "Extreme" dan "Pornograffitti". Tidak heran Nuno dinobatkan menjadi "Best New Talent" (pendatang baru terbaik) begitu Extreme meluncurkan album keduanya "Pornograffitti".

Sesuai dengan perkataan Nuno sendiri di interview-interviewnya bahwa cita-cita Nuno adalah menulis album berwarna funk seperti Pearl Jam, Nirvana dan sejenisnya. Oleh karena itu jika Anda ingin mendengarkan kepiawaian Nuno sebagai shredder, maka kami rekomendasikan Anda mendengarkan album Extreme: "Pornograffitti".

Album pertama "Extreme" dan album ketiga "Three Side Story" juga tidak kalah bagusnya. Justru album solo Nuno sendiri dan band barunya Mourning Widows, tidak menampilkan skill dari permainan Nuno sendiri. Bubarnya Extreme cukup mengecewakan penggemar Nuno.

Pada tahun 1982 Nuno pertama kalinya bertemu dengan vokalis Extreme: Gary Cherone. Ini merupakan awal dari band Extreme tsb. 2 tahun kemudian (1984) Nuno meninggalkan sekolahnya dan konsentrasi dalam melatih permainan gitarnya. Nuno melihat drummer Extreme: Mike Mangini di sebuah club di dalam band tribute Van Halen, ketika band-band lain sedang istirahat, Mike memainkan solo drum yang luar biasa.

1985 Nuno bertemu dengan bassist Extreme: Pat Badger yang bekerja di toko gitar Jim Mouradian di Winchester di mana Nuno selalu memodifikasi gitarnya di sana. Nama band mereka pertama kali dinamakan "The Dream" sebelum menggunakan nama "Extreme" dan menghasilkan lagu "Mutha" yang berhasil menerobos jajaran lagu di MTV. Tak lama kemudian nama band mereka diganti menjadi "Extreme" dan tampil di Festival Mare de Agosto (Santa Maria) pada tahun 1986.

Pada tahun 1987 Extreme memenangkan "Outstanding Hard Rock Act" pada tahun pertama Boston Music Awards. Mereka juga memenangkan kontes MTV video, yang ditonton juga oleh perusahaan rekaman A&M A&R scout. Pada bulan September mereka mendapat kabar baik dari A&M record untuk mulai rekaman.

Pada tahun 1989 mereka kembali disebut sebagai "Rising Star" di Boston Music Awards. Tak lama kemudian album debut mereka direlease, tetapi tidak banyak mendapat perhatian selain menjadi album terlaris minggu pertama di Boston, mencapai urutan ke 80 di US chart dan terjual 300.000 copy. "Kid Ego" menjadi single pertama mereka dan kemudian "Little Girls" dan Mutha (Don’t Wanna Go To School Today).

Guitar Magazines menobatkan Nuno sebagai "the next Eddie Van Halen"! Extreme tour ke Amerika Utara dan Jepang. Lagu "Play With Me" menjadi soundtrack film "Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure". Kemudian Nuno mengisi ritem gitar di lagu Janet Jackson "Black Cat".

Pada tahun 1990 Extreme merekam album keduanya "Pornograffitti" di Scream Studio (LA). Guitar magazine memberikan 6 halaman khusus untuk Nuno. Lagu Decadence Dance, Get The Funk Out direlease, tetapi tidak banyak yang terjadi.

Pada bulan Desember perusahaan gitar Washburn membuatkan gitar N4 Nuno Bettencourt Signature Series, sampai saat ini N4 membuktikan kerberhasilan penjualan gitar Nuno.

Awal kesuksesan Nuno terjadi pada bulan June 1991 ketika lagu "More Than Word" menjadi hit nomor 1 di USA dan luar negeri termasuk Israel, Belanda, dll. Nuno juga mengisi dan menjadi cover untuk video Hot Guitarist Video Magazine Premiere Volume (December "92).

Pada bulan Oktober Nuno terpilih sebagai Rocker Terseksi di majalah Playgirl dan juga memenangkan "Top of the Rock", "Songwriter of the Year", "Solo of the Year" (Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee), dan "Guitar LP of the Year" di majalah gitar "Guitar For The Practicing Musician"

Selanjutnya Extreme merelease album-album berikutnya: "III Sides", "Waiting For The Punchline" dan kemudian meninggalkan Extreme, merelease album solonya dan membentuk band barunya "Mourning Widows".

Penggemar shredder boleh kecewa dengan keluarnya Nuno dari Extreme karena album-album berikutnya Nuno semuanya berwarna funk murni, tidak terdengar lagi permainan gitar yang menampilkan skill dari Nuno.
Eddie van Halen ("Pelopor teknik two handed tapping")

Sebelum era permainan gitar shredd dipopulerkan oleh Yngwie Malmsteen pada tahun 1984, 6 tahun sebelumnya Eddie Van Halen telah lebih dulu sukses menggemparkan dunia musik. Teknik two handed tapping atau yang biasa disebut tapping saja telah berhasil secara mutlak meracuni lebih dari separuh gitaris rock yang ada di Amerika. Bukan hanya teknik tapping saja, ia juga mempopulerkan gaya permainan gitar hard rock yang sangat berbeda dari kebanyakan gitaris rock yang cukup kental permainan bluesnya. Solo gitarnya di tembang Eruption yang terdapat dalam album debut grupnya Van Halen secara mengejutkan menjadi perbincangan utama gitaris-gitaris rock dimasa itu.

Eddie Van Halen atau biasa disebut dengan panggilan singkat EVH, merupakan seorang imigran dari Belanda. Ia dan keluarganya pindah ke Amerika sekitar tahun 60an. Awalnya lebih dulu mempelajari piano dan kemudian sedikit konsentrasi di drum. Sedangkan kakaknya, Alex Van Halen malah mempelajari gitar.

Diam-diam mereka berdua saling mencuri kesempatan mempelajari instrumen yang bukan miliknya. Alex belajar drum, EVH belajar gitar. Ternyata malah keduanya sepakat bertukar alat musik. Jadilah kemudian EVH menekuni gitar.

Pada saat mulai belajar gitar, ia cukup terpengaruh dengan permainan dari Eric Clapton dan Jimmy Page. Kemudian mereka membentuk band bernama Mammoth yang akhirnya berganti menjadi Van Halen dengan masuknya Michael Anthony pada bass, dan David Lee Roth pada vocal. Band ini terbentuk secara resmi tahun 1974.

Album Van Halen yang dirilis tahun 1978 berhasil menembus charts Billboard sampai posisi 15 dan berhasil terjual sebanyak 2 juta keping yang salah satu menjadi penyebabnya adalah solo gitar EVH di lagu instrumental, Eruption.

Nama Eddie Van Halen langsung berkibar karena ia berhasil mempopulerkan teknik tapping. Meski kontribusi dari David Lee Roth sebagai vocalis yang atraktif dan fenomenal juga tak bisa dipandang sebelah mata, namun bisa dibilang nama EVH lebih menjual. Namanya menjadi perbincangan dan berkali-kali meraih penghargaan sebagai Guitarist of The Year oleh majalah-majalah.

Selain teknik tapping yang menjadi trademarknya, EVH juga dikenal dengan senyumnya yang selalu ia tampilkan dalam segala kondisi. Tak heran gitaris-gitaris muda di Amerika begitu menghormatinya. EVH kemudian membuat penampilan gitar Fender Stratocasternya menjadi berbeda. Body berwarna merah dengan garis-garis putih menjadi salah satu nilai jualnya.

Album berikutnya dimasa David Lee Roth menjadi vocalis yang dirilis adalah Van Halen II (1979) dan Woman and Children First (1980), Fair Warning (1981), Diver Down (1982), dan sebuah album yang merupakan salah satu album masterpiece dari Van Halen yaitu 1984 yang dirilis tahun 1984.

Di album 1984, EVH menampilkan permainan keyboard yang menawan. Malahan masyarakat awam lebih mengenal suara dan permainan keyboardnya di lagu Jump ketimbang teknik-teknik gitarnya. Lagu Jump berhasil menjadi juara 1 di charts Billboard.

Pada tahun 1983, sebelum album 1984 dirilis. EVH sempat bekerjasama dengan King of Pop, Michael Jackson. EVH ikut serta dalam proyek album Thriller yang nantinya terjual lebih dari 20 juta copy. Ia memoles lagu yang berjudul Beat It menjadi sedikit berwarna rock dan dance. Tak lupa juga EVH menampilkan solo gitar dan teknik tappingnya yang merajalela di lagu tersebut. Munculnya EVH di lagu tersebut mendapat respon yang luar biasa dengan perolehan menduduki puncak charts Billboard selama berminggu-minggu.

Tahun 1986 Van Halen mengalami perubahan formasi dengan mundurnya David Lee Roth dan digantikan oleh Sammy Haggar. Meskipun begitu, EVH tetap mampu menampilkan permainan-permainan gitar terbaiknya.

Album-album berikutnya seperti 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlwaful Carnal Knowledge (1991), dan Balance (1995) masih cukup mampu memperpanjang nafas Van Halen dalam dunia rekaman. Tak lama kemudian kembali Van Halen berganti vocalis dengan masuknya Gary Cherone (ex Extreme).

Van Halen semasa Gary Cherone oleh banyak pihak dianggap sebagai era terburuk dengan ditandai kurang suksesnya album Van Halen III (1998). Tahun 2001 EVH terkena kanker mulut, ia terpaksa absen selama sekitar 2 tahun untuk proses penyembuhan.
Michael Schenker ("Salah Satu Pelopor Gitar Hero di Jerman")

Jika diadakan polling mengenai "10 gitaris terbaik Jerman sepanjang masa", saya yakin kalau nama Michael Schenker akan termasuk salah satu diantaranya. Bahkan kalaupun disuruh memilih 5 saja, saya tetap yakin namanya akan tetap masuk. Tidak aneh bila melihat sepak terjangnya mengangkat nama Jerman sebagai negara yang memiliki gitaris kelas satu dan mampu bersaing dengan gitaris handal dari Inggris dan Amerika.

Michael dan saudaranya, Rudolf memiliki hobi yang sama, yaitu bermain gitar. Michael mendapat inspirasi dalam bermusik dari 2 grup band yang cukup populer di masa itu, Wishbone Ash dan Mountain. Ia juga sempat bekerja sambilan sebagai transcriber lagu.

Tahun 70-an awal, Michael bergabung dengan band milik Rudolf, The Scorpions. Kebetulan permainan Michael cukup menonjol, namun saat band ini merilis album debutnya, Lonesome Crow pada tahun 1972 album itu kurang mendapat respon yang positif. Satu hal yang perlu dicatat, saat itu usia Michael baru 17 tahun.

Setelah mengikuti tur promo bersama Scorpions, band lain bernama UFO tertarik dengan talentanya. Kemudian Michael meninggalkan Scorpions dan bergabung dengan UFO yang baru saja ditinggal gitarisnya, Michael Bolton (tapi bukan Michael Bolton penyanyi).

Bersama UFO, Michael sempat merilis beberapa album, diantaranya Phenomenon (1974), Force It (1975), No Heavy Petting (1976), Lights Out (1977), Obsession (1978). Pada era Michael Schenker inilah nama UFO bisa berkibar dan mendapat pendengar yang lebih luas sampai ke pasar Amerika.

Permainan gitarnya menunjukkannya sebagai seorang musisi yang berpengaruh. Ia juga terkenal dengan sosoknya yang menenteng Gibson Flying-V dengan body yang dimodif pada bagian catnya, setengah hitam, setengah putih.

Akan tetapi setelah album merilis album Obsession, Michael dikeluarkan dari UFO karena kecanduan alkohol dan kembali ke Scorpions. Ia menggantikan Uli John Roth yang sebelumnya menggantikan posisinya saat ia keluar dari Scorpions dulu.

Sekembalinya ke Scorpions, ia ikut merilis album Lovedrive pada tahun 1979. Namun sayang, ketika sedang menjalani tur pertamanya di Amerika, Michael lagi-lagi absen hadir karena kecanduan alkohol. Album tersebut tidak diterima di Amerika terutama karena masalah cover albumnya. Michael pun digantikan oleh Matthias Jabs yang akhirnya menjadi gitaris permanen Scorpions sampai saat ini.

Setelah keluar dari Scorpions, ia sempat diangkat sebagai gitaris pengganti sementara Joe Perry di Aerosmith. Setelah itu Michael memutuskan untuk bersolo karir dengan membentuk Michael Schenker Group atau biasa disebut MSG.

Album-album tersebut cukup berkarakter hingga membuat Ozzy Osbourne sempat menawarinya menjadi gitaris Ozzy setelah kematian Randy Rhoads.

Tahun awal-awal 90an, Michael juga sempat bergabung dengan Ratt untuk bermain unplugged MTV. Selain itu ia pernah tampil dalam kolaborasi Contraband bersama personel-personel dari band-band rock saat itu seperti Shark Island, Vixen, Ratt, dan L.A. Guns). Kemudian ia merilis album Thank You (1993), dan Unforgiven (1999). Tahun 1995, Michael kembali bergabung dengan UFO, dan merilis album Walk On Water dan kemudian tahun 2002 merilis album Sharks.

Ia adalah anak seorang tukang servis elektronik dan musisi. Ia ternyata ikut mewarisi bakat ayahnya dalam bidang menyolder dan musik. Namun ia sanggup menyeimbangkan ketertarikannya akan teknologi dan musisi dan kemudian melanjutkannya untuk meraih gelar di bidang Fisika. Di saat senggangnya ia menyempatkan diri membuat gitar dibantu oleh ayahnya. Gitar buatannya ini yang kemudian menjadi trade-mark Brian May di setiap penampilannya.

Saat masih sekolah ia membentuk band pertamanya, 1984, yang merupakan sebuah band instrumental. Band mereka manggung di sekitar kota London dan membuka pertunjukan artis/band legendaris seperti Traffic, Jimmi Hendrix, Pink Floyd dan Tyrannosaurus Rex (nantinya dikenal sebagai T-Rex). Pada tahun 1968, ia meninggalkan bandnya untuk memfokuskan diri pada studinya di Imperial College.

Brian May kemudian lebih fokus bersolo karir, merilis Back to the Light pada tahun 1993. Fender have married Roland's VG technology with the timeless design of the Stratocaster. The result is a cutting-edge classic.

To understand the concept behind the VG Strat, you have to go back a few years to when Roland invented the concept of guitar and amp modelling and implemented it in their pioneering VG range of processors.

The VG modelling system can emulate different guitar body types, different pickup types and layouts, various amplifier and speaker combinations and, of course, all the familiar effects and stomp boxes. It can even make an electric guitar sound like an acoustic guitar or bass and emulate various miking options.

Providing there is room enough to fit Roland's GK six-pole pickup close to the bridge, VG systems can work with pretty much any electric guitar (the pickups are available separately, so you are not restricted to using them with the Strat). It needs to be a six-pole pickup in order to process each string separately — which you need to do if you want to create accurate guitar models where, for example, the pickups might be mounted at an angle, or, more importantly, to allow the tunings of individual strings to be changed for more complex models, such as drop tunings or simulations of 12-string guitars. The pickup goes so close to the bridge because, positioned there, it can pick up a relatively predictable sound from the strings and string bending doesn't push the string too far away from the pickup. The same GK pickup can also be used to drive Roland's range of GR synthesizers, via the multi-pin DIN socket on the output of the GK pickup's control box.

Roland's latest hardware VG processor is the VG99, which is far more powerful than its predecessors and allows for a huge amount of user customisation. They are great systems, but the flip side for many traditional guitarists is that the sheer scope of such a device can be daunting.

Fender & Roland

Apparently Roland have been working behind the scenes with Fender for some 10 years now, and the partnership is begining to bear fruit, in the form of a series of Boss pedals that model specific Fender amplifiers (so far, the Deluxe and the Bassman), and the Fender VG Strat reviewed here.

The VG Strat concept is pretty straightforward — marry Roland's cutting edge technology with a good, tried-and-tested Fender guitar. But while Roland were the first to bring guitar and amp modelling to the market, they're not the first to put guitar modelling into a physical instrument: that accolade belongs to Line 6, with their Variax guitars.

The Fender-Roland approach is a little different from that of Line 6. Most importantly, the Variax has no conventional pickups, so all the sounds that are available are modelled from the signals picked up by the piezo sensors, set into the bridge saddles. This actually works pretty well (I have a Variax myself and I'm always surprised by how good it can sound). However, if you don't like the look or feel of the Variax guitars, you can't benefit from the technology unless you pay a guitar tech to cannibalise a perfectly good Variax and then fit all the parts and bridge into a heavily modified guitar of your choice.

With the VG Strat, all the necessary electronics are discreetly hidden inside a very nice American Standard Stratocaster, which still has its own three original single-coil pickups, as well as a Roland GK pickup. The benefit of this approach is that you can always switch back to using the guitar as a regular Strat if your batteries go flat during a gig — you'll never be left unable to get a sound out of your guitar. You'd also probably want to use the regular Strat sound for playing straight Strat parts, because, let's face it, no model is going to get closer than the sound of the real thing!

The other main difference between the VG Strat and the Variax is that the Variax allows you to model a whole range of familiar electric, semi-acoustic and acoustic guitars (as well as a few oddball choices such as banjo, sitar and resonator guitars) and, if you have a computer, you can load up their intuitive Variax Workshop software and build your own custom guitars (by changing bodies or pickups). With the Variax you can also set up your own choice of alternative tunings, though these are tied to individual patches rather than being accessible globally.

By comparison, the VG Strat offers less flexibility but, as we'll see, that isn't the idea. In addition to the 'normal' Strat, you get models of a slightly warmer-sounding Strat, a Telecaster, a selection of five acoustic guitars (from resonator to dreadnought, selected using the five-way pickup switch) and a humbucker guitar. There's no obvious intention to model any specific other make or model of guitar, but the Fender variations cover most tonal bases. You select them simply by turning the rotary model-selector switch (which is neatly disguised as a small, standard Strat knob). The first position is the normal Strat, which bypasses all the electronics, then the models start off with the alternative Strat. If you think that modelling a Strat seems like a bit of a waste of time when the real thing is just a switch-click away, remember that once you switch to modelling you can use the alternate tunings or 12-string emulation, which you can't do with the regular pickups.

A second small knob controls the rotary switch used to select the alternative tuning options. These are Normal, Drop D, Open G (for all those 'Keef' rhythm parts), DADGAD (for the folkies and the Gordon Giltrap fans), Baritone/Low B (for that earthy Seattle grunge vibe) and a very plausible 12-string. Any of these tunings can be selected for any of the guitar models, though they all assume your guitar is tuned normally to start with. To save the control section from getting too crowded, the normal 'volume and two tone controls' arrangement has been simplified to a master volume and a single master tone control. As with the Variax, the modelling is confined to guitar types — there's no amp or effect modelling built-in, other than a little ambience reverb for the acoustic models.

Nuts & Bolts

The review model, which came in a high-quality ABS moulded case, is actually one of the nicest Strats I've played. It has a three-colour sunburst finish, three-piece ash body with sumptuously deep contours, a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard (though a maple board option is also available) and chrome hardware, including the new US two-point vibrato bridge with solid, stainless-steel saddles. The three-ply parchment pickguard gives the guitar a slightly aged look (which I prefer to the usual stark white) and the neck has a slender C-section with medium jumbo frets that feel exactly right. Out of the box, the setup of the review model was extremely good, with no string choking, even though the action was lower than I'd normally set it. As expected, the fingerboard radius is the 9.5 inches used for most current Strat models. The only thing I'd change is that I'd probably cut the nut slots a few thousands of an inch deeper. Fender have fitted their current heavy-duty Fender/Schaller Deluxe staggered, sealed tuning machines. (If anyone from Fender is reading this, I'd like to suggest using slotted shafts on all your tuners, as they give almost as good tuning stability as locking machine-heads. Given that that's what the original Strats were fitted with, they also look more authentic.)

From the front, the only real giveaway that this isn't a straightforward Strat is the slightly changed control-knob layout, though if you look more closely you'll also spot the GK pickup. This blends in pretty well with the pick-guard, but would have blended even better had it been made in cream, rather than white. There's also a bright-blue power LED that comes on when a lead is plugged into the guitar. Power comes from four AA batteries that are fitted from the rear of the instrument, covered by a plate. A second plate on the rear covers the electronics, but from the front there are few clues as to the technology that lies within.

Fender claim that four decent rechargeable NiMH batteries will give an operating time of up to 10 hours. If the batteries do die on you, you get an early warning, as the blue power light starts to flash for a while before everything stops, giving you time to switch to the standard pickups for the next song. There is no obvious way to stop the battery draining when the normal Strat pickups are selected, as the system needs to be powered up to let you make an instantaneous change to an alternative model during performance, and there's no external PSU option. When I tested the battery life using the supplied alkaline cells, the blue light started to flash after less than a couple of hours, and though the NiMH batteries will certainly perform better, I don't think I'd want to risk using them for more than one gig.

Once you've chosen a model, the five-way switch is used to to select either five or three pickup combinations, depending on the model. In acoustic guitar mode, the same switch selects between five different acoustic guitar types, including the resonator, and when any acoustic model is selected, the tone control instead functions as a reverb control, to allow you to add a bit of 'space' to the sound.

One thing that really surprised me when the instrument was first announced was that it didn't include the multi-pin DIN socket that would allow it to drive other GK-compatible devices, such as Roland's range of guitar synths. My guess is that Fender were worried that too much fancy technology might put off potential buyers, but in reality they could have hidden it under a blanking bung, as Line 6 did with their CAT5 connector on the Variax guitar. According to Justin Norvell, Senior Marketing Manager for Fender, "We felt strongly that keeping the instrument simple was the way to go. Usually, the more functionality you add, the more complicated an instrument becomes, so we kept the VG Stratocaster pared down to the essentials, making it easy to pick up and play. After all, playing a Fender Strat shouldn't require the study of a phone-book-sized owner's manual".

I think this is fair enough up to a point, but putting in the extra socket and offering USB editability, so that those who wanted to could set up their own custom tunings, would have made the instrument far more appealing to those who've already bought into the VG/GK concept, and it could easily have been arranged so that the casual user needn't deal with it. As it is, it is very much a case of 'you get what you're given'. On the other hand, I suppose there's an equally valid argument that says if you're into programming you should look towards Roland's VG88 or VG99 systems and fit a GK pickup on your own Strat (or buy a VG-ready Strat).

Sounds

Comparing the modelled Strat sound with the natural Strat sound (from the conventional pickups), the model is slightly warmer, with a bit less of the characteristic Strat 'jangle', so it makes a useful alternative without straying too far from the familiar Strat tonality. The Telecaster sound is coloured slightly by the resonance of the tremolo springs, but the pickup sounds are modelled very plausibly, with a smooth-sounding neck pickup and a wonderfully brash, bright bridge pickup. When you switch to the Humbucker model, the sound you get is very similar to what you'd expect from a Strat fitted with two humbuckers, with the bridge pickup sounding not dissimilar to that of an HSS Fat Strat. Because the Roland GK pickup is magnetic, the dynamic response is very much in line with what you'd expect from conventional pickups. This also sidesteps the main weakness of the Line 6 Variax, which is that heavy-handed vibrato use can result in thumps being picked up by the bridge piezo transducers. Also, if you're into really serious vibrato abuse, piezo pickups tend to lose output when the strings go slack during dive bombing, whereas magnetic pickups such as those on the VG Strat keep on going.

Turning to the acoustic sounds, there are three rather nice sounding 'conventional' acoustics, ranging from small to large body, plus a very bassy option that sounds to me like a miked steel-string, with all the top turned off for the top three strings, and a warm resonator sound on the bottom three strings (I couldn't find any details in the manual to describe what the individual acoustic models are based on so I've no idea what this one is supposed to be). There's also a very sweet-sounding resonator model. However, it is important that you play the acoustic sounds through a full-range amp such as an acoustic guitar combo or PA in order to reproduce the correct tonal balance. For recording, you can, of course, simply DI the acoustic sounds, but on stage some form of footswitch to allow you to redirect the signal to a different amplifier when playing the acoustic sounds would be pretty much essential. Line 6 include a switch and a remote powering system with their Variax, which makes a lot of sense but, again, Fender wanted to keep their VG Strat as simple to use as a conventional guitar, and they've certainly succeeded in that. The acoustic sounds are as good as any modelled acoustic sounds I've heard, and in a live band context they'd be pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing. Even played solo they're pretty impressive, and any tonal shortcomings are balanced by the lack of acoustic feedback problems. Turning up the Tone knob, as mentioned earlier, adds a little reverb, which takes away the DI'd dryness of the basic sound.

Alternate Tunings

The 'open tunings' are achieved using pitch-shifting technology. Because of the way pitch-shifting works (by splicing and looping very short segments of audio), it rarely sounds entirely natural, but done well (as it is here) it gets close enough to fool the ear in most situations. This process always sounds smoothest on monophonic sounds, and the VG Strat benefits in this respect from the split-pickup system mentioned earlier. This also allows each string to be pitch-shifted by a different amount. In addition to the preset alternate tunings mentioned earlier, there's the 12-string model, which follows the tuning pattern for a real 12-string instrument (in that the bottom four string pairs are tuned in octaves, while the top two are in unison). This sonic illusion works very well, as it combines the unshifted sound with the doubled parts, resulting in a very plausible 12-string sound. The open tunings also sound pretty good, though if you pick the individual notes and really listen, you can occasionally spot a few pitch-shifting artifacts — but this is true of any such system, and in normal performance you'd be hard pushed to hear the 'trickery'. You do, however, have to play loudly enough so that you don't also hear the acoustic sound from the guitar strings as this can really confuse you, though this situation is really only likely to arise in the studio, where you're working at lower monitoring levels.

Practicalities
The sound quality of the VG Strat is as good as from any guitar modelling system I've heard, and there's no denying its ease of use, but there are a few practical issues.

The battery life is something of an achilles heel: as there's no mains PSU option, this is something you have to think about very seriously. Of course, you have the fall-back option of switching to the regular pickups, but it would be worth investing in a set of eight good-quality NiMH batteries and a charger that can deal with four at once, so that you'll always have a spare set.

Personally, I find the lack of a DIN output to drive my GR33 guitar synth rather limiting, and I'd like to be able to set up different tunings or more sophisticated guitar models — but then I'm more typical of a VG99 customer than a VG Strat customer. For the straight-ahead guitar player who simply wants a quality US Strat but needs the tonal flexibility to cover more electric sounds and a range of acoustic sounds, the VG Strat pretty much nails it. Those open-tuning options make perfect sense for anyone who wants to use any of the standard tunings on offer, because if you play a guitar with a floating vibrato, even retuning to a drop D is impractical, as all the other strings go sharp, due to the change in tension on the vibrato springs. Being able to switch to an alternate tuning for any of the guitar sounds is also very practical in comparison with the Variax, where you have to save the tuning as part of a patch, with the sound to which it relates.

Verdict

The on-board electronics of the VG Strat add, in a very organic, intuitive way, to what is already a first-class, beautiful instrument. It isn't cheap, and it won't meet the needs of everyone interested in guitar modelling, or those who want the ability to drive a Roland guitar synth, but those users will probably go the VG99 route anyway. The practicalities discussed above are exactly that (practicalities) and are not insurmountable by any means. Ultimately, the VG Strat does exactly what its designers intended: it brings together a great guitar and a great guitar modelling system, in a very accessible way that won't scare off even the the most technology-shy guitarist
