This is Octave for android. Free, open source numerical computing goodness. Like Matlab (trademark of Mathworks), but free and open source. Not some similar program, but really Octave built for android running natively. This is just the beginning. Please don’t rate the app yet as there are many known issues that are being worked through. It will mature significantly to be the same as running it on another OS. This is a different sort of app, you need the Android Terminal Emulator app (installed before installing this) for it, because you will be running octave in that terminal. Unpacking the executable and other files necessary for octave to run will take awhile when you first run this. You need droidplot for plotting to work. Whether this is installed to the sdcard or to internal storage, the executables and libraries will take up around 75B of internal storage either way.

An alarm clock shouldn’t shell-shock you out of your dreams. That’s why I created Gentle Alarm which tries to wake you up during light sleep using an optional pre-alarm.

Alarm clocks can’t know if you are in light sleep or deep sleep (those movement based alarm clock don’t work) but they can play a very quiet pre-alarm which you will only hear if you are in light sleep. If you are in deep sleep, you will simply sleep through the pre-alarm.

The pre-alarm plays 30min before you really want to get up (you can change that). If the pre-alarm wakes you up, you will be more refreshed than if you had slept until the main alarm because at that time you would have fallen back into deep sleep. Give it a try and I am sure you won’t want to miss it anymore.

Of course, the app has all the usual features of a great alarm clock:
It can switch to a night display automatically when docking the phone. It can automatically shorten the snooze time with each time you press snooze. It can automatically create playlists of your favorite artist or genre. And it allows you to change colors, fonts, and backgrounds.

It means you don’t have to enter your password/pattern/PIN when you turn on your phone. When you’re at home, or work, you don’t need to worry about losing your phone, so why should you have to enter your password?

How does it work?

When you get home and connect to your WiFi network, your device will unlock. Then when you leave, and the WiFi disconnects, the device will lock again. You have to enter your password the first time after you connect to your WiFi network. This is so that if someone steals or finds your phone, they can’t just bring it to your house to unlock it. After you enter your password once while connected to your WiFi network, you won’t have to enter it again until you leave/disconnect. This is great for SMS texting!

What else does it do?

You can also set a lock delay, for when you’re not at home. The default delay is set to 5 seconds (you can adjust it), so when you turn the screen off, the device won’t lock until 5 seconds have passed. I created this wallpaper because I loved the basic art used and wished it would move. I’m also a bit tired of so many live wallpapers that look very cool, but are too “busy” or colorful to make good long-term useable wallpapers.

* Seven colours: blue, magenta, pink, red, green, “Tron”, and more! More will be added. Note that loading of new textures can take a few seconds. This is not a bug and will only happen once.

* sync schemes: make the rings spin in sync, alternating pattern, or random pattern. Speed control coming soon.

* shrink or scale rings

Has been tested on a variety of platforms. Works very well on WVGA phones (especially Galaxy S and Galaxy S 2). Scales correctly for Honeycomb (tested on Galaxy Tab 10.1).

Performance heavily optimised using OpenGL and good memory handling. Won’t slow your phone down at all.

Special thanks to “Deep” Live wallpaper dev and Robert Green for excellent OpenGL framework. I will open source this in time to contribute back. Special thanks also to Roland Harrison and my other “beta testers” for letting me annoy them so much with testing. So many bugs caught!
