The Member representing Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, has empowered over 500 constituents with vehicles, business equipment, vocational tools and educational support aimed at reducing poverty, creating wealth and promoting self-reliance.

The second phase of the empowerment programme, themed "Empowering Communities, Building Futures," was held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Awka, attracting a large gathering of beneficiaries, political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, religious leaders and party faithful from across the constituency.

The beneficiaries received cars, shuttle buses, tricycles (Keke), motorcycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, 2KVA and 1KVA generating sets, among other empowerment items carefully selected to support transportation, small businesses, vocational enterprises and household income generation. Scholarships were also awarded to deserving students as part of the lawmaker's commitment to expanding access to education.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Orogbu explained that the empowerment programme was her way of appreciating the thousands of supporters, volunteers and constituents who stood by her during the 2023 general elections.

According to her, although over 36,000 people voted for her and more than 5,000 supporters actively worked throughout the campaign, it would be practically impossible to accommodate everyone in one phase of the programme.

She therefore urged those who did not benefit in the current phase to remain patient, assuring them that another round of empowerment has already been scheduled for November 2026 to enable more constituents to benefit.

Prof. Orogbu charged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the items, emphasizing that the empowerment was designed not merely as a welfare package but as an economic intervention capable of improving livelihoods, creating employment opportunities and enhancing the living standards of families across Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency.

She noted that sustainable empowerment remains one of the most effective approaches to tackling poverty, reducing youth unemployment and stimulating grassroots economic development.

The Special Guest of Honour and Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi (CON), commended Prof. Orogbu for what he described as purposeful and people-oriented representation.

He also praised Senator Victor Umeh for his continued support and commitment to the development of the constituency.

Peter Obi observed that genuine leadership should be measured by visible impact on the lives of the people rather than empty political promises, stressing that initiatives capable of lifting citizens out of poverty ultimately contribute to reducing crime and insecurity.

He lamented the rising unemployment, poor state of education, weak healthcare system and growing insecurity in the country, attributing many of Nigeria's challenges to poor governance and the mismanagement of public resources.

Reaffirming his vision for Nigeria, Obi promised that with competent and accountable leadership, the country could overcome hunger, insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship.

He equally called for credible elections in 2027, urging Nigerians to reject electoral malpractice and embrace the principles of equity, justice and fairness.

Also speaking, Senator Victor Umeh described Prof. Orogbu as a rare gift to the people of Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency.

He noted that the federal lawmaker has distinguished herself through quality representation, constituency projects, scholarships, road infrastructure and various empowerment initiatives.

According to him, her vocal contributions on the floor of the House of Representatives have continued to attract developmental projects to the constituency.

Senator Umeh maintained that allowing Prof. Orogbu to secure a second term would position her as a ranking member of the House, thereby increasing her capacity to attract even greater dividends of democracy to the constituency.

He equally described the empowerment programme as unprecedented, saying it reflects the lawmaker's genuine commitment to improving the welfare of her constituents.

Earlier, the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, congratulated Prof. Orogbu for fulfilling her campaign promises through impactful representation.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University - COOU Branch, Saturday, urged the university management to urgently implement the 2025 agreement reached with the government to save their dying members amidst the economic crisis in the country.

The branch disclosed this in a statement dated 29th July affirming their support to the ASUU national which had through the Owerri branch led by Comrade Dennis Aribodor urged Anambra State government owned institution and others to urgently implement the ASUU-FGN agreement with a view to improve the workers welfare.

According to the statement signed by the branch Chairman, Comrade Bruno Ibekilo and the Secretary, Comrade Alajekwu Udoka Benard, this position was reached on July 15th 2026 Congress and clearly communicated to the University authorities which equally assured them that efforts were on to actualise it.

They further maintained that the national body’s effort were in the collective interest of members and intended to support the state branches like COOU and Imo state University branches where implementation has not commenced and not to merely seek relevance.

“This implementation of this agreement has long become overdue to save the lives of our members especially in ASUU-COOU and other state universities that have been on the same salary scale since 2009. The branch also acknowledges and state that presently, the University authorities have made firm promises and has put machinery in place for the implementation of the agreement which we hope will yield the expected results also calls for urgency in this direction.

“The branch also wants to make it clear that the efforts by the national body of the union through the zones and that of the ASUU Owerri as coordinated by the Zonal Coordinator, Cde. Dennis Aribodor, are in the collective interest of our members and are intended to support the state branches (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and Imo state University branches) where implementation has not commenced and not to merely seek relevance,” the statement added.

The Police Command in Anambra has reiterated its commitment in providing a crime free space in Anambra through it renewed efforts against cultism, substance abuse, cybercrime, and other social vices which has hindered peaceful co-existence amongst all strata in the state.

The State command showcased its willfulness through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), following a strategic working visit to the state by a delegation from the Inspector-General of Police.

A noticeable trend by one of the aspirants is the increasing resort to “name-dropping,” particularly claims of closeness to, or endorsement by, the party’s national leadership. While access to party leaders may be a natural by-product of holding public office, it should not be misconstrued as a substitute for _anointing, blessing or endorsing_ an aspirant .

The incumbent member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Engr. Dominic Okafor, by virtue of his office, maintains official channels of engagement with the Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, OFR (Oluatuegwu), and the party’s national leadership, including the National Chairman, Barr. Sly Okenwa. Similarly, Hon. Chibueze Ofobuike, as the sitting Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, interacts regularly with the Governor in the course of his administrative duties and, like other elected officials, has institutional access to party leadership.

Hon. Afam Ezenwafor (Afamation), though not currently holding an elective or appointive office, remains a member of the party and retains the right, as do all members, to engage with party leaders, albeit without the structural advantages of incumbency.

In this context, it is important to draw a clear distinction between access and endorsement. The former is a function of office; the latter is a formal and deliberate political act.

Leveraging proximity, real or perceived, to project inevitability is neither a credible campaign strategy nor a reflection of grassroots support.

Experience has shown that posturing, embellishment, and political theatrics often unravel when confronted with verifiable facts. The truth remains constant: no aspirant has been officially endorsed by the Governor or the party leadership for the Aguata Federal Constituency race.

Accordingly, party faithful and the wider electorate in Aguata are urged to disregard claims rooted in name-dropping and political insinuation. The forthcoming primary election presents an opportunity for members to freely and fairly choose their preferred candidate.

Party leaders at the ward and local government levels, as well as all eligible APGA members, should be guided by this principle: the power to decide rests with the people. Aspirants should be evaluated on their personalities, track records, impact on people's lives and the communities, and their capacity to effectively represent Aguata Federal Constituency, not on purported proximity to power.

In the build-up to the 2027 general elections, this longstanding tradition of fairness that characterised the practice has been subtly and tactically subverted. This disruption is widely attributed to the maverick manoeuvrings of Chibueze Ofobuike (the incumbent Chairman of the Local Government Area), actions which ultimately cost Aguata South the opportunity to complete its eight-year tenure as Local Government Chairman.

His Excellency, Mr. Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, OFR (Oluatuegwu), made it clear that individuals who have previously served as Caretaker Committee Chairmen and elected Chairmen are ineligible to contest the forthcoming Local Government Council elections. Following this pronouncement, Chibueze Ofobuike reportedly realised that his personal political ambitions had been threatened. Instead of putting Aguata South first, grapevine information alleged that he sacrificed the zone on the altar of inordinate ambition.

The local government Chairmanship position was well within reach - a bird at hand - for Aguata South, had Chibueze Ofobuike chosen to place his zone and the people of Aguata South above his personal aspirations and pushed for the position. Instead, driven by vaulting ambition, he is said to have identified an opportunity in his estranged Deputy Chairman. Through calculated political maneuvering, he allegedly sidelined potential aspirants from Aguata South by preventing them from obtaining the Expression of Interest (EoI) and Nomination Forms for the Chairmanship position. He is further alleged to have orchestrated the emergence of his Deputy, who is from Ekwulobia, Aguata North, as the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the elections, effectively leaving Aguata South with nothing at the moment.

This is Chibueze Ofobuike's political strategy to block the emergence of a candidate for local government Chairmanship from Aguata South, and aspirants for the House of Representatives from Ekwulobia, while positioning himself advantageously for the House of Representatives seat in Aguata Federal Constituency.

This timely write-up sheds light on the maneuvering and manipulation of some Ndi Aguata through his propaganda machinery. Now that these issues have been laid bare, the good people of Aguata South are better placed to determine who should be held accountable for denying them their rightful turn to complete their tenure as Chairman of the Local Government Area.

It is important to note that the contest for House of Representatives seat in Aguata Federal Constituency has been opened to both Aguata North and Aguata South. The history of party primaries and general elections in the constituency has been well documented, and need not be revisited here.

A principled politician placed his people and their interests above personal gains. Any leader who sacrifices his zone and their interests to advance inordinate ambition deserves to be approached with caution. It defies logic for an individual to bargain away what belongs to his people, merely to secure advantage in a House of Representatives contest that is open to both Aguata North and South.

Now that the veiled has been lifted, the people of Aguata South must reflect deeply and act wisely. They should find the item that fell into the riverbed with their feet. The entire good people and residents of Aguata should know the number of their teeth with their tongues. What defines leadership is not physical appearance, but character.

The use of information is power. With the greater awareness comes the responsibility of choice. Now that Ndi Aguata may have know better, the choice of who would represent them in the Green Chambers rests with the people.

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has declared that "enough is enough" regarding the decade-long leadership crisis rocking the traditional stool of Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Receiving the final report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Awka Traditional Stool dispute, the Governor emphasized that his administration will not accept the existence of two traditional rulers in any community.

The dispute, which has lingered for over ten years, prompted the state government to intervene after internal peace mechanisms failed. Governor Soludo revealed that he had previously mandated the President-General of Awka—who was unanimously selected by the community—to mediate.

However, weeks later, the PG reported that the complexities of the crisis exceeded his capacity for intervention, leading the community to formally request the state government’s involvement.

"Awka is not just another community; it is the capital of the state," Governor Soludo remarked. "The institution of the Eze Uzu must be revered. If the stool is in dispute, it diminishes the entire state. We must be a state of law and order."

Presenting the report earlier, the Chairman of the Commission and former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Paul Obidigwe, described the findings as a culmination of tireless efforts to uncover the facts in the overriding public interest.

The Commission’s inquiry led to several cardinal findings such as the remote causes which includes the vaulting ambition of Chief Austin Ndigwe and an exaggerated perception of customary authority that ignored statutory law, Controversies surrounding "dust-to-dust" Catholic burial rites and the procedurally defective attempted dethronement of the incumbent monarch in 2017.

According to him, the Commission ruled that the purported removal of H.R.M. Obi Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II) was unlawful, invalid, and lacked legal effect due to a lack of quorum, denial of fair hearing, and failure to comply with the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Law 2007.

The Commission also concluded that Chief Austin Ndigwe was never lawfully selected or installed, noting that his claim to the throne is an "affront" to the state government as there was no vacancy in the stool.

Justice Obidigwe stated that the Commission’s primary recommendations include the formal reaffirmation of H.R.M. Obi Gibson Nwosu as the substantive Traditional Ruler of Awka and the deployment of government machinery to stop Chief Austin Ndigwe’s unlawful claims to the stool. He also stressed the need for structured reconciliation to foster communal healing.

Accepting the document, Governor Soludo assured the public that the government would study the report with keen interest and issue a White Paper as a follow-up.

"This is a message to other communities," the Governor warned. "Always refer to the Anambra Traditional Rulers Law 2007. It is my duty to enforce the law. In this matter, there is no victor and no vanquished—only the triumph of the rule of law."

Nigerian-Canadian, Hon. Oliver Okennah, has advocated for youth engagement in agriculture with a view to address food security and rising prices of commodities in the country.

Okennah, who is the founder of Mother Sussan Charity Foundation, stated this in a statement addressed to youth of Ebenebe, Awka North Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State on their Egwu Alusi festival, a celebration ushering in new planting season and healthy living.

The 2024 NUJ Anambra State Most Innovative Entrepreneur of the year award winner equally used the occasion held between 5th to 9th March, 2026 to enjoin the youth to be cautious and courteous while engaging in cultural festivities.

"The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings and farming is a profession of hope. I have urged Ebenebe youths to embrace agricultural practices such as animal husbandry, crop plantation and others instead of idleness, a state of being inactive, unemployed or lazy, often characterized by a lack of effort or purpose," he stated.

According to Dikemba Ebenebe as he is fondly called, agriculture is the foundation to human civilization, wealth, and environmental harmony, as well as enhances food quality, safety, and sustainability.

"Ebenebe is known for food baskets of Awka North and Anambra state. We will continue to progress through the initiative of my foundation, Mother Sussan Charity Foundation in support of agricultural development in Ebenebe and Awka North which is known as EBENEBE FOOD SUFFICIENCY AND SURPLUS CAMPING INITIATIVE.

"We have distributed seedlings to encourage everyone to farm. This year will make it the 4th year of spreading the food surplus camping initiative. It is going to be huge and better and we also pray for a support and partnership to make ala igbo food sufficient," he stated.

Anambra Assembly calls for use of social media to educate, mobilise youth for social change

The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioners for Youth Development and Information to collaborate with relevant agencies to mobilise the youth for social change using the social media.

The House presided by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, observed that social media platforms such as Facebook,TikTok and Instagram have become powerful tools of communication and influence among youths in Anambra State, shaping their thoughts, habits, and aspirations.

The Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Chukwuma Okoye, while sponsoring the motion with 28 others, explained that initiating a programme to promote sustainable and positive social media engagement among youths, could be achieved through State-sponsored challenges and campaigns designed to educate young people and promote sociocultural values among them.

According to him, while these platforms often expose youths to vices such as cyberbullying, fake news, and unproductive trends, they can also be harnessed to promote creativity, education, skills acquisition, civic engagement, drug abuse prevention, community services and entrepreneurship.

"By engaging local content creators, influencers, and digital entrepreneurs, government-backed campaigns can amplify positive messages, empower young people, and create opportunities for job creation in the digital economy," he said.

Contributing, the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme and Hon Obi Nweke representing Anambra East observed that not utilising social media for social change would leave the youth to be absorbed by its negative impact since they have equally been influenced by the usage inside churches.

Also speaking, the member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency, Hon Mimi Azikiwe noted that Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world, thus any government that wants to engage the populace, must use social media to correct some of the ills therein.

Hon Bernard Udemezue, representing Ayamelum Constituency asked Govt to recognise and appreciate those who create educational contents for the good of the society, particularly those who have exposed the ills in government.

Hon Augustine Ikeh of Nnewi North constituency observed that most of these contents are created for economic reasons, hence the need to start creating meaningful contents to help the youths.

Riverine sand miners and Tipper drivers at Onitsha metropolis, Anambra State, Friday, protested against alleged harassment and multiple taxation by some State government officials despite obtaining license and clearance from the federal government.

The protesters, numbering about 150, trooped to the office of Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Onitsha Area office, alleging that members of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA brigade) and government officials from Ogbaru, Oyi, Onitsha North and Onitsha South Council Areas extort them on daily basis even when mining is exclusively under the federal government.

They bore placards of different inscriptions some reading "Prof. Ofoegbu allow tipper drivers and sand miners to live," "OCHA brigade allow us to thrive in our business," "Tipper drivers contribute most in Anambra State Internally Generated Revenue," "Enough is enough: we can't tolerate over taxation and intimidation again," "Our activities are not illegal, we are legal sand miners," among others.

The President General, Riverine Sand Miners Association of Nigeria, Sir Chris Mbaegbu, unveiled their operating licenses, certificates and rights of waves obtained from the regulatory federal government agencies, including the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

"We are helping the federal government in dredging the River Niger yet we are not complaining. We pay our dues to the federal government authorised agencies and were given license and clearance to operate. But despite this, officers of the State government and Local government agencies are extorting us daily.

"A week today, the OCHA brigade came and carried over our 20 tippers, including workers, loaders and excavators, and locked them up to suffer. We paid between N300,000 and above before they were freed. We don't know what else to do because we have pleaded with them to tell us what they actually want but they refused," he stated.

Also speaking, a sand miner, Chief Uche Okafor urged governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene as he was not sure he would allow people engaging in legitimate businesses to suffer untold hardship as OCHA Brigade and other agents of government have inflicted on them.

According to him, OCHA Brigade members have been scaring away customers (drivers) from their beaches because whenever they invade they would arrest everyone in sight, seizing their mining machines and demand payment before they could be set free.

"On one occasion, they punctured the tubes and tyres of my machine before they could dove away with it. Sometimes, they damage one thing or the other. There is no time they came that I didn't spend up to one million Naira in repairing my machine after paying a fine to recover them. Our customers are scared to come here because of them," he stated.

Also speaking, the State Chairman of Tipper Drivers Association, Chief Augustine Akigwe, described the situation as a worrisome, noting that his members had been arrested and taxed severally even when they paid their dues to relevant authorities.

Akigwe, who said they pay between N1500 and above on each trip, asked governor Chukwuma Soludo to prevail on his officers to halt multiple taxation, arrest and harassment which according to him, had endangered the lives of those under medication when arrested.

"Personally, I wrote a letter to the governor to tell us where to operate as tipper drivers and where not to operate. I have also written to OCHA Brigade and Professor Charles Ofoegbu (Managing Director of Anambra State Solid Mineral Development Company Limited). But they keep on referring me from one place to another. We should not be treated this way. They should tell us what they want and stop arresting and tormenting us," he stated.

Responding, the Area Manager, NIWA, Onitsha Office, Sir Victor Nwokeocha, described the State government officers harassing tipper drivers and sand miners as reckless, irresponsible and nonchalant, and urged governor Soludo to call them to order.

"Why intimidating people we issued with operating licences and clearances to operate? It is reckless, irresponsible and nonchalant. We are authorised with exclusive rights to regulate all the activities of the internal waterways. You can see our rights and functions in sections 9 and 13 of our Act. We don't know why the OCHA Brigade, and Ogbaru, Onitsha North, Onitsha South and Oyi local government areas are harassing them.

"I have personally written to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the State House Assembly and others but no response. The governor should call their people to order. I have reported to the management of NIWA and I will still inform them when I get to Abuja next week. I will give them the petitions written by both the sand miners and tipper drivers individually and collectively. I know that the office will act accordingly," he stated.

But when contacted, the MD/CEO, OCHA Brigade, Mr Celestine Anere argued that miners and tipper drivers must pay IGR to the State because they operate there.

INEC Warns Against Double Registration, Records 4,423 New Voters in Anambra CVR

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned residents of Anambra State against double voter registration, warning that offenders risk losing their eligibility to obtain a Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

The Anambra State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Elizabeth Agwu, gave the warning during a media briefing on the progress of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Awka.

She disclosed that the commission recorded 4,423 new registrants in the second phase of the exercise, describing the turnout as encouraging while urging more eligible voters to take advantage of the registration window.

“Double registration automatically invalidates a person’s record and disqualifies such an individual from getting a PVC,” Agwu warned, stressing that the commission’s system is designed to detect and reject multiple entries.

Commending the media for its role in information dissemination and public enlightenment, the REC noted that the CVR for the 2027 elections commenced on January 5, 2026, and is currently in its fifth week. The exercise, she added, will run until April 17, 2026.

She, however, cautioned against last-minute registration, observing that many eligible voters often wait until the final days — April 15, 16 and 17 — resulting in overcrowding at registration centres and operational delays.

To ease the process, Agwu explained that the INEC State Headquarters in Awka has two registration points and is open to all eligible voters, irrespective of their local government areas, wards or polling units within the state.

Providing a breakdown of the exercise, she said no registration was recorded during the first week (January 5–12), but participation improved significantly in subsequent weeks, bringing the cumulative total to 4,423 registrants.

The REC also called on residents with damaged PVCs, those seeking transfer or change of polling units, and individuals who have yet to collect their cards to visit the INEC office for assistance.

Highlighting technological improvements, Agwu said the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) performed efficiently during the last Anambra governorship election and received commendation from both local and international observers. She added that recent upgrades have further reduced system glitches.

In addition, she announced plans to deploy BVAS machines to tertiary institutions to enable students register conveniently on their campuses.

While appreciating the Anambra State Government for its previous awareness campaigns, Agwu urged intensified sensitisation to boost participation in the ongoing CVR. She said INEC would continue to collaborate with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), and traditional communication channels, including town criers, to reach grassroots communities.

Reiterating the importance of the PVC, the REC noted that beyond voting, the card serves as a valid means of identification and contributes to credible population data for national planning and federal resource allocation.

She further revealed that the commission is strengthening its technology to automatically block duplicate registrations, ensuring that once a person is captured, any future attempt is rejected by the system.

An Evangelist and National Coordinator of APGA Media Warriors Forum, Chinedu Obigwe, has urged people to support governor Chukwuma Soludo's effort to stop sit-at-home, alleging that those kicking against the decision were bent on crippling the economy of Igbo nation.

Obigwe, who disclosed this in a statement, argued that those supporting Monday sit at home were the actual enemies of Ndi Anambra and igbo's at large.

"Those supporting this sit at home that has dealt heavy blow to igbo's economy are the actual enemies of the State and igbo's at large. The question begging for answers is why Anambra? This sit at home order is not being obeyed in imo, Ebonyi, Enugu and Abia but some miscreants are pushing for it to continue being obeyed in Anambra.

"As a matter of fact Mazi Nnamdi Kanu stated in a widely circulated press release that he is not in support of the Monday's sit at home and advised our people to put an end to it. The people claiming that they are doing it as a civil disobedience measure to protest the detention of Nnamdi Kanu are deceiving themselves," he added.

He further alleged that people "are using Nnamdi Kanu condition to perpetrate criminality and cripple igbo's economy. As for those saying that Governor Soludo should fight for Nnamdi Kanu release from detention instead of fighting to end the Monday's sit at home, they are being economical with the truth because Governor Soludo is the first Governor in igbo land to call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu.

"When he came in as Anambra Governor, he paid Nnamdi Kanu a visit at DSS detention facility and had a frank discussion with him. Till date, he is among the vocal voice calling for Nnamdi Kanu release. The truth remains that Nnamdi Kanu is 100 percent in support of Governor Soludo efforts to end the Monday sit at home.

IPOB accuses Soludo of stoking insecurity over closure of Onitsha market

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has condemned Gov Chukwuma Soludo's deployment of heavily armed security operatives to the Onitsha Main Market.

In a Press Statement Tuesday, Jan 27, 2026 signed by Emma Powerful, the Spokesperson for IPOB, the group "strongly condemns the barbaric and unwarranted actions of Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, who has unleashed unruly military and police formations on innocent traders and protesters in Onitsha.

"In a blatant violation of human rights and unleashing of democratic principles, these forces have opened live fire on peaceful demonstrators exercising their right to protest against the governor's draconian sit-at-home enforcement orders.

"This tragic incident is a stark reminder of how Nigerian authorities often initiate cycles of violence only to later falsely attribute them to IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

"We call on all well-meaning Nigerians, human rights organizations, and the international community to immediately caution Governor Soludo and warn the Nigerian police and army to desist from firing live ammunition into crowds of unarmed civilians.."

Powerful noted that "such provocative tactics not only endanger lives but also exacerbate the very insecurity they claim to be combating. Governor Soludo, by allowing himself to be manipulated as a tool in the hands of oppressors, has stained his hands with the blood of his own people. This is not governance; it is state-sponsored terrorism designed to undermine the legitimate aspirations of the Biafran people."

According to him, "IPOB remains committed to peace and a negotiated settlement that culminates in a democratic referendum on self-determination—the very cause for which our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been unjustly imprisoned. We urge all protesters to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and resolute in the face of provocation.

Violence, the IPOB Spokesperson noted, "is not our path; it is the weapon of those who fear the truth and the will of the people.

"The liberation of Biafra is nearer than ever, as prophesied by our indomitable leader. In his words: "If I have to go to Sokoto, the seat of the Caliphate, to set Biafra free from our bondage, then I shall do so." Ndiowu community upholds election of Okeke-Ifi as traditional ruler

Ndiowu community in Orumba North Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, on Tuesday, re-assured their unalloyed supports to the Traditional Ruler-Elect, Chief Ben Chibuzor Okeke-Ifi.

Okeke-Ifi emerged as a traditional ruler-elect in an election held on January 12, 2025 to produce a replacement to His Royal Highness, Eze O.O. Udeh that passed on in 2015.

The community at a peaceful solidarity match held at Awka, Anambra State capital, commended governor Chukwuma Soludo for providing an enabling environment which led a peaceful, free and fair poll where Okeke-Ifi defeated all contenders.

They also refuted allegations by a section of the community that election of Okeke-Ifi was marred with irregularities, noting that it was conducted with extant laws of the land under the supervision of the State government represented by the Commissioner for Town Union and Chieftaincy matters, Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne and others.

The protesters, numbering over 500 displayed placards of different inscriptions in support of Igwe Okeke-Ifi, some of which read "We have chosen our Eze," Soludo thank you for a free, fair and credible poll," "Mr Governor has given us Solution," PG and his cabals let Ndiowu breaths, "God bless our king," "We want Soludo Solution in Ndiowu."

Addressing the media, a representative of Ndiowu Elders Council, Chief Christian Nnabuihe, said they came to thank Governor Soludo for providing an enabling environment for a free, fair and credible election to hold.

Nnabuihe, who explained that the 1990 constitution was duly followed, dismissed allegation that another constitution was made by the community but not followed during the election, noting that their existing constitution barred women and other non-qualifying individuals from participating in Igweship election.

"Our 1990 constitution was followed. Those who came here yesterday to protest did not know what they did. They are now feeling ashamed of themselves. We will keep resisting any attempt to stop our peace loving community. We are solidly behind our Igwe-Elect, Okeke-Ifi," he noted.

Also speaking, Chief Chibuzor Okolie, who is Chairman of nine villages in Ndiowu, recalled how the opposition tried to scuttle their monarch electoral processes by fixing a date without issuance of proper notice but were countered.

On his part, the Youth leader of Ndiowu, Mr. Ugochukwu Imoh, represented by Mr. Sunday Kanu, and the Woman leader, Barrister Mrs Obiageli Okoli, urged the government to support their Igwe-Elect as they were ready to work with him for peace to reign for meaningful development to thrive.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary to the office of the Ministry of Town Union and Community affairs, Dr Nwabufo Nwankwo commended the community for their peaceful conduct, assuring them that governor would look into their demands.

Sureties withdraw from court over alleged intimidation by suspect

Two sureties in the murder case of Mr Anayo Nworah allegedly killed by some youth of Enugwu-Agidi, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State have applied to withdraw their suretyship to Chukwuebuka Anuta, one of the suspects in the case.

The sureties, Mr Edwin Obiora Samuel and Mr Israel Chineze Anauta, both of Iruobieli Village, wished to pull out in charge no. MNJ/75C/2022 case filed against Anuta by Anambra State police commissioner over Nworah killed in 2021 at his hometown.

The application, brought by way of a motion on notice with Suit No. MN/18M/2026, is pending before the court 3 of Anambra State High Court, Awka presided over by Justice Gloria Chinyere Anulude.

They deposed to an affidavit stating that the defendant was admitted to bail on 7 September 2022 by the Anambra State High Court, Awka Division, sitting as a Vacation Court, presided over by Justice N. L. Oyeka, and that they executed the bail bond and submitted all required documents to secure his release and he was granted bail but he later failed to comply with the reasons to which they signed his bail bond and began issuing threats to their lives and causing disturbances within the community, thereby endangering their safety.

According to them, the application was made in good faith, without malice, and solely for the preservation of their personal safety and uphold the tradition of the community in related case.

However, the applicants noted that when the matter was called earlier it was noticed that the case file was not available in the court, just as the defendant was neither present nor represented in the court by a counsel.

The court further inquired whether the defendant had been served with the application which the applicant's lawyer, Mrs Victoria Okani confirmed that service was duly effected and they acknowledged.

Ruling on the case, Justice Gloria Anulude noted that, in the absence of the case file and given the circumstances, the matter could not proceed, and adjourned it to Friday, 30 January 2026, for hearing of the motion on notice.

Speaking to journalists after the court session, one of the sureties, Chineze Israel Anuta , stated that their decision to withdraw stemmed from the defendant’s failure to comply with the conditions that necessitated the execution of the bail bond.

According to him, “Mr. Chukwuebuka Anuta has been threatening our lives and creating unrest in the village. We cannot continue to stand surety for someone who disobeys court orders and puts our lives at risk.”

The case arose from a petition submitted by Dr. Chinedu Ikeanyi, a concerned citizen of Enugwu-Agidi and son of Late His Royal Highness, Igwe Davison Okafor Ikeanyi, to the State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, with copies sent to the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies, over the alleged killing of Anayo Nwora.

Gunmen invade Lilu again, steal Dogs, Xmas rice gifts, fowls, goats

As the numerical strength of the insurgents that have been unleashing terror on Lilu community in Ihiala Council of Anambra State in the past five years reportedly dwindles steadily, and hunger and other challenges beat them badly, they have resorted to stealing food stuffs including dogs, yam, fowls and goats.

They also moved from house to house and carted away bags of rice and other palliative donated to the ravaged community by the Chief Executive of Air Peace airline, Chief Allen Onyema who hails from a neighboring community, Mbosi.

The hoodlums, according to local and security sources were reported to have literally become hysterical since the Youths took over control of the security, peace, representation of Lilu last year.

The insurgents, our investigations revealed, also bitterly blamed the renewed and enriched Conversation about their nefarious activities in the area by the well-attended Lilu Youth Development Forum(LYDF) conference with the theme: "Productive Youths, Peaceful Community" held recently on Jan 9/10,2026. The initial permutations of insurgents according to security sources got badly distorted with more ideas generated at the conference.

The citizens' initial fears and reluctance to come out or discuss the issue had given the hoodlums a false impression of invisibility and bravado.

But the speed with which the Youth Conference was planned and executed took them by surprise, our source learnt.

The Conference which held at the Ihiala Council Headquarters got a big boost with the attendance of the traditional ruler of Lilu, Igwe Godson Onyediri, members of his cabinet, top stakeholders and local and foreign development partners/investors who he brought from USA to help turn the economy of Lilu around.

The pressure mounted on the hoodlums since the youths sustained media presence and round-the-clock security monitor to avoid sweeping their challenges under the carpet or forgetting it completely has encouraged every citizen of the area to join the struggle to flush out all the social misfits from their surrounding bushes and communities has evidently become unbearable.

Onyediri noted that yesterday the insurgents who operates in commando guerrilla style invaded their community again, carting all the yuletide stock of edibles in their homes especially the bags of rice, other palliatives donated and distributed by kind-hearted citizens.

They were shocked they invaded people's premises and took away dogs, fowls, goats, tubers of yam etc.

This, the monarch admitted wasn't too surprising due to the noose tightly gripping their necks and waists right now from diverse corners.

He expressed strong belief that the countdown of the end of the days of their nefarious enterprise has since begun.

What with the daily aerial and ground surveillance of the Odochi stream axis and the stretch bothering Lilu, and Ezinifite communities, both in Anambra State and Orsuihiteukwa communiy in Imo State where they had initially taken as their inviolable abode and safe haven.

Investigations equally disclosed that kidnap/robbery victims, rapes, fetish rituals, and other heinous acts were usually carried out here.

But now they have become aware that they are now naked as virtually everyone including the police, the soldiers and the locals, etc now know their location, the routes, biting hunger, very poor numerical and logistical challenges, hence currently very vulnerable from multiple fronts.

Lilu stakeholders led by Onyediri, according to disclosures at the recent peace summit/conference have now teamed up with the security operatives -including police, the

Army, the DSS and local operatives in concert with Imo State intend to unleash a one-of-its- kind offensive on the insurgents soon.

Anambra industrialist invests over N500m in community development

Anambra Lagos-based industrialist,Mr Godwin Osonwa says he invested over N500 million to build and equip healthcare and ICT centres in Obunagu- Amikwo, Awka community, to better the lives of the people.

Osonwa said that the investment was not political or ploy to earn Chieftaincy cap but borne out of service to humanity and as a way to better and pay back to the society he grew up from a triat he got from his mother

The Obunagu- Amaikwo Awka born business guru disclosed this in an interview with the Newmen in Awka ,Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra on Thursday.

He said that healthcare and quality education was top on his agenda with the understanding that Prof. Charles Soludo, the state governor, is determined to build lasting legacies across all sectors of the economy.

“I was thrilled by the leadership commitment of the governor; I then resolved to key into the vision of the state “Think Home Philosophy.”

“I believe that government cannot meet all the needs of its people and decided to partner the state in areas of healthcare and education.

“As a growing child, I noticed that my late mother Esther Osonwa walks miles to assess a hospital anytime we fall sick or herself including other kinsmen.

“Health facility was top in my mind and then schools were not within close range too. The two projects became a guide for my first social service to my people. The building and equipping of the health and ICT centres gulped over N500 million,” he said.

Osonwa said that the health facility built in Obunagu- Amikwo community in Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra was to bridge the gap in assessing healthcare services for the people when the need arises no matter the time.

He said that the health centre started in 2023 under Manari Osonwa Foundation and was handed over to the Anambra government on April 29, 2025, and named after his late mother Esther as “Manari Osonwa Primary Health Centre (PHC).”

He added that the government massively supported the foundation through the provision of qualified medical personnel, and working tools which made way for the free quality medical services to the people.

“We have doctors on ground, vaccines, vaccine machine powered by solar, modern delivery beds, beddings, water, telemedicine, amongst other medical tools.

“The government presence is fully seen in this facility which demonstrates government support to any individual with the intention to help his people.

“The Commissioner for Health, Mr Afam Obidike, brought in Anambra Health Insurance Scheme into the facility which made it easy for free healthcare service delivery to anyone who visits the centre.

“I am excited that God used me to put smiles on the faces of sick people within the area where I grew up with government support,” he said.

Osonwa said that in the area of education, he decided to build an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre to train children in primary and secondary schools in the community.

“Government now builds schools closer to the people, so I decided to create an ICT centre to sharpen the students and make them ICT compliant before going to university.

“If they are computer literate while in the village they can compete favourably with their counterparts in urban areas and take any examination fearlessly on computers.

“We have teachers under our pay roll to train willing children from primary to secondary school levels, six times in a week, to ensure the fear of computer leaves them before their university education.

“The children attend the lessons once they are back from their regular school activities and during long vacation holiday times free of charge,” he said.

“I also feel happy seeing people from other communities outside Obunagu-Amikwo like Amaenyi, Umuzuocha, Umudioka come to register for the computer training.”

Osonwa disclosed that the Special Assistant to the governor on ICT, Mr Fred Agbata, have made the ICT unit very functional by giving the centre qualified ICT persons to support the training of willing participants.

“The health and ICT centres of the Manari Osonwa Foundation is where private passion meets public purpose. I call on all eligible residents within the environment to come and enjoy free health and ICT services and the incentives at end of the training,” he said.

Osonwa is an industrialist, who deals on all types of building materials and solar energy.

The Supreme Head, the Liberation Centre of Absolute God, Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, Prophet Dr Ramas Okoye-Asuzu, on Sunday, prophesied that President Bola Tinubu would be reelected in 2027 poll with ease.

Okoye-Asuzu, who stated this in a homily at his temple, explained that Tinubu's victory has been concluded at the spirit realm, noting that God gave him the revelation during an early morning prayer.

He, therefore, urged Mr Peter Obi, who is from the same Council Area with him to shelve his Presidential ambition until 2031 because God would neither anoint him nor his ally, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar despite them forming alliance in a new political party, African Democratic Congress (ADC).

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been declared winner of the election already in the spiritual world. I advised those contesting against him to suspend their ambitions. His victory was revealed to me by the Gods of the land after a tense consultation ahead of the 2027 general election.

" It was also revealed to me as the custodian of the Gods that my brothers, Mr Peter Obi and the current Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi's aspirations of becoming Nigerian President would only be actualized in 2031. My prediction as a prophet with over 35 years in worshipping, is for the good and continued togetherness of the country.

"I am not saying this to gain monetary or political relevance. I am saying this to let Nigerians know who will be their next President come 2027. Tinubu has also done tremendously well in all sectors of the economy. His administration has provided Ndigbo a sense of belonging to all. He created the South East Development Commission and other humanitarian benefits the region is gaining," he added.

Anambra monarch returns in tears 5 years after insurgency sacked community

The traditional ruler of the Lilu community in Ihiala Council of Anambra State, His Majesty Igwe Barrister Godson Onyediri broke down in tears yesterday while recounting human and material losses he and his community have suffered in past five years due to insurgency.

He however gave the youths a pat on the back and encouraged them that Lilu is already on path of recovery.

Onyediri whose palace and home were completely razed down in the early stage of the carnage visited on Lilu and other neighbouring communities bordering Anambra State in the Southern Senatorial zone with the Orlu zone of Imo State.

Despite the widespread damage in virtually every part of the community, the monarch gave youths of his community a warm pat on the back.

According to him, ''the youths knowing full well that we have no other home other than Lilu, chose to organize themselves, pull human and material resources together to chart a way forward. I commend you all.

"I want to assure you and all citizens of Lilu that all shall be well that again. It won't be long.

"Within the next 90 days Lilu ga adikwa nma ozo". This literally means that within the next three months, his community, their community would be alright again..."

Onyediri admitted that the extensive wanton brigandage, all would become a thing of the past soon.

The monarch expressed deep faith, love and efforts to lift Lilu community once again by Gov Soludo.

According to him, Gov Soludo has not forgotten Lilu. Infact he has done so much more than 90% of other communities in the state.

The Igwe therefore noted that as all that's currently in the pipeline now, everyone including himself who are currently on the run would be back home within the next ninety days.

The ugly situation, Igwe Onyediri noted that it's taking a lot of resources off them. That it's only those involved can attest to the huge human and material resources being lost.

He's happy it's producing positive results. He therefore called on more citizens to get involved; "for we have no other place to call home other than Lilu. He urged all stakeholders, sons and daughters to jettison every form of devisive tendencies, irrespective of ones social status in the community but to pursue collective peace for all.

The traditional ruler frowned at those he accused of praying and working against peace, progress and working against the collective good of all.

He wants them to have a rethink because the community's forebears who he represents would not be silent for too long again.

He said that posterity will not forget all those who are currently working tirelessly to see that peace return to the community.

Igwe Godson Onyediri commended the Youths of Lilu for taking up the personal initiative to organize the national conference.

A delegation from the Free and Accepted Masons, Southeastern Region, Nigeria, recently conducted a festive outreach to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home Agulu, keeping with their long-standing traditions of Brotherly Love and Relief.

The visit which saw several distinguished lodge officers and members including, Chief Laz Enwereuzor; Rt Hon. Ikem Uzoezie ( Former Anambra State House of Assembly Member) Dr CC Ezelum; Dr Nnaemeka Umedum, (Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, CMAC Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital) Chief Ikenna Nwachukwu, among other esteemed officers and brothers of the region.

While reflecting on the purpose of the visit, Chief Laz Enwereuzor said Freemasonry seeks to create tangible positive impacts in the society, especially for the vulnerable and local communities.

“To relieve the distressed is a duty incumbent on all men. Whatever we have we share with the vulnerable to see how they can come up and grow from strength to strength,” Chief Laz concluded.

Dr Ezelum who made introductions on the members who are captains of industries, also harped on the unchanged Freemason's legacy of service in the Southeastern region.

Warmly recieving the cherished delegation to the Sickle Cell Orphanage Home, Director Mrs Aisha Edward Maduagwu, praised the Masons for their unwavering commitment in humanitarian activities. She noted with gratitude that this was not the first time the Lodge had extended its hand to the home, recognizing the brethren as consistent partners in our mission.

Aisha Edward specifically mentioned and appreciated Rt Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, recalling his efforts as co-chair on the committee for the enactment of the sickle cell law in the 6th Assembly. Seven year later, it raises quite a flurry of emotions to see children who has not been birthed during that time, speak today on the importance for the full implementation and enforcement of the sickle cell law.

In the same vein, she also expressed her profound gratitude to the CMAC, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Dr Nnaemeka Umedum, for the institution's quick response and ability to sickle cell crisis and management. Observing the warm and cordial relationships between the sickle cell group and the Anambra State commissioner for health, making it easily accessible for sickle cell patients to gain quality services in state owned medical institutions. She thanked the management of the teaching hospital, while expecting more collaborations on places of mutual interests.

The children of the home added a touching highlight to the day, delivering a wonderful speech presentation, eulogizing the noble gestures of their benefactors. They expressed heartfelt thanks for the gifts, which they felt would significantly improve their wellbeing and comfort.

Items donated where cartons of normal saline and dextrose saline, malaria test kits, packets of drip sets, gallons of groundnut oil, and a generous cash token.

Health officer urges Anambra residents to maintain regular medical checks

A registered midwife nurse,Mrs Pauline Okoli,incharge of Manaria Osonwa Primary Health Centres (PHC), Obunagu in Amaikwo, Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra have called on residents and people within the environment to make sure they take medical routines exercise regularly to avoid any avoidable illness

Okoil said that most people do not take care of their health status till they are struck with one health issue which may be prevented if they engage in regular health check.

She said that Manaria Osonwa Primary Health Centres is a fully funded health centres which provides free medical services to the patients that access its services but regrets that people in the area do not not maximally assess it for a healthy living.

She disclosed that the health centre was built by indigenous son of the community, Mr Godwin Osonwa in memory of his late mother Esther and was handed over to state government on April 29 2025.

Okoil said that the .medical services provide at the centre includes primary medical care, elderly care, immunisation from 0 to 59 months of birth.

Also antenatal and delivery care, postnatal care, laboratory services ,treatment of minor Aliment and injuries, family planning and referrals all are freely attended to.

She disclosed that people of Obunagu Amaikwo and environment are not maximally the fully equipped health centre and urged them to care for their health now the facility is at their door step at free for all treatments.

"Most dwellers are business people and hardly come in for medical routines checks or even use it for at will. We have recorded nearly 20 deliveries since the centre started and very low patronage despite having reasonable medical services to offer the public.

" We have telemedicine services, morden medical tools, qualified personnel and operates in a friendly environment that assures healthy living and also makes referral if the need arise.

" I expect to have high patronage this 2026 year considering the density of people in the area so I call for people to take their health check more seriously," she said.

She said that the state government have played their own role of providing PHC through the partnership of Manaria Osonwa foundation so is left for the people to take ownership of their health.

Okoli also appealed to the state government not to relent in their support in ensuring quality health care system to all in spite of their status and begged for attention in areas of constant water and electricity supply.

She commended the management of Manaria Osonwa foundation who despite handing over the centre to government stll support the facility by providing quality medical services to Amaikwo residents and its environs.

Ugbenu Community Elects Engr. Ephraim Madu as President General

Former Special Advicer to the Governor of Anambra state on political matters, Hon. Ephraim Madu of Umuaneke village, Ugbenu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra state has emerged the President General of Ugbenu Town Union.

Hon. Madu pulled a total of 349 votes which represents 60.1 percent of the total votes cast to defeat his co-contestant, Elder Donald Udeh who garnered 232 votes.

The election held at Community Primary school, Obiagu was conducted through option A4 under the supervision of the Ugbenu electoral committee, observers from the Anambra state ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, some presidents-General from Awka North amongst others.

A young entrepreneur and Philanthropist, Mr. Toochukwu Chigboo emerged the vice President General while the former chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra council, Comrade Francis Ekpone was elected Secretary General of Ugbenu Town Union.

The officers were voted into office for a period four years.

In his acceptance speech, Engr. Ephraim Madu appreciated God for his mercies upon Ugbenu community and the electorates for considering him worthy of the position promising not to disappoint them.

“I want to thank the good people of Ugbenu community for their maturity and patience in the face of deliberate provocations all this while.

They maintained absolute decorum before, during and after the elections held on January 4th and 6th respectively. I will not take the confidence reposed in me for granted.

“I want to assure my people of Ugbenu Diaba that I will serve them as their servant-leader to the best of my ability, standing consistently on the path of truth no matter whose ox is gored. I will respect everybody’s views but will not allow anyone to call the short for the entire executive.

I promised, during campaign to give Ugbenu a working constitution, a befitting Civic Centre and to treat everyone with love, respect and also ensure that we give our community everlasting peace.

“The election has come and gone, I therefore appeal to all of you, the good people of Ugbenu, for your support so that together we shall take our dear community to the greater heights.”

One of the stakeholders of Ugbenu community, Chief Romanus Chika otherwise known as Ijele Awka North described Engr. Ephraim Madu's election as a square peg in a square hole, stating that Engr. Madu is eminently qualified to lead Ugbenu community.

"What I want in Ugbenu is peace and development. I am particularly advocating for a new Ugbenu where everyone will be happy and development span across the length and breath of the eight villages that make up the town.

The chairman of the electoral committee, Rev. ( Hon) Felix Eke thanked the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon

Collins Nwabunwanne, government observers, the outgoing president General, Hon. Samson Ojo and the entire Ugbenu town for their cooperation which, according to him, made the election successful.

Other officers of Ugbenu town union include: Mr Ndubuisi Ephraim, assistant secretary, Ikeyine Chigozie J, treasurer, Mr Okechi Valentine, financial secretary and Mr Azubuike Elogha, assistant financial secretary.

Others are: Mr. Ezebuilo Aluka, organising secretary, Mr. Obu Sunday Junior, Public Relations Officer, Uzoefune Johnbosco Bishop, Jideuno Onyedika and Nwokolo Foster were elected as provost 1-3 while Barr. Paulinus Onuigbo is the legal adviser of Ugbenu town union.
