Arturo Vidal, who been linked with a move to Manchester United has been told to hand in a transfer request if he wants to leave Juventus this summer.

Vidal was linked with United throughout the January transfer window and new manager Louis van Gaal is still believed to be keen on signing the Chile international.

But according to reports in Italy and Spain, Liverpool are also showing interest in the 27-year-old.

Vidal was on Monday expected to hold talks with Juve officials about his future at the club, and Juventus director Giuseppe Marotta, who last week insisted the midfielder will not be sold this summer, has said the club will only consider a sale should a transfer request be submitted.

"We have clear ideas," he told Sky Italia.

"We renewed [Vidal's] contract a few months ago just because we knew we could count on an important element.

"We don't want to sell Vidal. There are only rumors because he is a player among the best in the world. We never activated a clause to try and sell him - if he doesn't show an intention to leave, our position won't change."

Ander Herrera’s proposed £28.7million transfer to Manchester United has edged a step closer after he passed a medical with the club.

Ander Herrera will become Louis van Gaal’s first signing as Manchester United manager in a £28.7million deal.

United moved to pay the buy-out clause fee for the 24-year-old Athletic Bilbao midfielder on Tuesday.

Herrera, an intelligent and stylish midfielder, was the subject of a £24m offer from David Moyes’s United last summer.

Spanish paper Marca reported on Monday night that Herrera had a fee to sign Herrera, with the deal set to go through before his release clause rises to £33million on July 1st.

And the now the transfer looks set to be announced in the coming days with reports in Madrid saying the Athletic Bilbao ace has now passed his medical.

Louis van Gaal has driven the transfer of the player, and the 24-year-old looks set to play a big role next season.

Herrera will sign a four-year-deal at Old Trafford, worth over £9million.

United denied problems trying to sign Herrera last year — namely when three lawyers turned up at La Liga headquarters in an attempt to push through the transfer without knowledge of either club.

They know the buy-out figure is due to rise to £32m from July 1 and Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, did not want another saga to drag on this summer.

Herrera has been watched by United for more than three years, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother Martin among the first to bring him to the club’s attention.

In a summer where Manchester United simply have to rebuild their midfield, it’s unsurprising that stellar names such as Toni Kroos, Cesc Fabregas and Arturo Vidal have all been linked with a move but maybe the relatively unknown Jordy Clasie is the one who should make the switch to Old Trafford.

“The Dutch Xavi,” as he has been dubbed, has all the attributes to succeed in the Premier League, and joining United would make sense.

Diminutive, he may be, but don’t be fooled—Clasie has enough bite and tenacity about his play to fill one of the three midfield slots that Louis van Gaal tends to favour in his starting lineups.

At just 22 years old, the Feyenoord man doesn’t have the experience required to single-handedly reinvigorate United’s midfield, but there’s no doubt that he could work well alongside another dynamic midfielder.

With many of Van Gaal’s targets on show at this summer’s World Cup, the newly appointed United boss will watch on intently.

Maybe, just maybe, the Dutch national team manager will be keeping a close eye on one of his own players—Jordy Clasie.

What’s important for United this summer is that they sign midfielders who are effective in a defensive and attacking capacity.

Kroos and Fabregas just don’t fit the bill in that regard, but Clasie does; he has the all-round game. What he lacks in raw strength he makes up for in determination and work rate.

The only concern would be playing both him and Juan Mata in a midfield three. Size certainly does not matter when it comes to carving out a successful career in football, but having both Clasie and Mata in the same midfield might be a step too far.

Regardless, it’s crucial that United draft in someone who can win the ball in midfield and, at the same time, offer a creative spark. Clasie is very much that type of player.

In the Netherlands’ World Cup warm-up game against Ecuador, Clasie demonstrated his panoramic vision and range of passing, particularly with his assist for Robin van Persie’s stunning goal.It was the type of pass that United dearly missed last season.After the game, Van Persie was quick to heap praise on his young compatriot

For United fans, that duo linking up on a frequent basis at Old Trafford would be a welcome sight.

And while it would be ludicrous to sign a player based on one pass, never mind one game, it’s precisely the kind of play that epitomises the young Dutchman.

Clasie is a ball winner, a competent passer and he has a quick turn of pace that allows him to carry the ball forward with intent.

That’s the kind of player Clasie is, and that’s precisely what United need.

He may not be tested at the very highest level, and he would need to be complemented by another physically capable midfielder, but Clasie is a classy player. United would be wise to invest in him.

Somewhat inevitably, United have been inked with a number of up-and-coming Dutch stars following Van Gaal’s appointment.

Clasie is just one of those mooted to make the switch. It may be a question of how many Dutch players join Van Gaal at United, not if they do.

Clasie is very much a player who could work well in the system that Van Gaal will likely adopt at United next season. Playing alongside another midfielder, sat behind Rooney or Mata, he could really shine.

And if Clasie impresses Van Gaal in the next few weeks, then there’s no reason why bringing him to United should be seen as a step down from Kroos or Fabregas.

Clasie is much closer to what United need right now than that duo, and he would be following in the footsteps of his current national team manager, which could help him settle.

Barcelona and Manchester United reportedly negotiating with Atletico Madrid’s Miranda

Barcelona and Manchester United are both reportedly negotiating a possible transfer for Atletico Madrid centre-back, Miranda, as both clubs are desperate to shore up their backlines after undergoing trophy-less seasons.

According to Spanish radio station, Onda Cero’s ‘Al Primer Toque’ programme, the representatives of Atletico Madrid’s Brazilian centre-back, Miranda were in Barcelona on Tuesday to begin transfer negotiations.

However, Barcelona are unwilling to pay Miranda’s €30 million release clause, but Barcelona sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta is prepared to pay €20 million, as was previously reported last week.

In another report by Spanish newspaper, Sport, Barcelona’s stance varies slightly as they state that the Blaugrana are prepared to offer €10 million with an “unused” player included, which is likely to be winger Cristian Tello to sweeten the deal, as Atletico Madrid have been pursuing Tello for over a year.

Finally, Spanish sports daily, AS, is reporting that Miranda’s representatives are negotiating with Manchester United as the side is prepared to pay the full €30 million release clause, with the report going so far as to state that Miranda is looking for a school for his children.

Atletico Madrid, for their part, have refused and will continue to refuse all offers for Miranda, up until a club activates his release clause, then it comes down to the 29-year-old to make the difficult decision over his future.

What is clear is that several, or all, of these conflicting reports are not true and that we may not have any factual information until a deal is done or the transfer window officially closes.

The summer transfer market does not officially open until July 1, but clubs are already busy preparing moves behind the scenes.

Louis Van Gaal wants to splash £30m on bringing Dutch pair Jordy Clasie and Bruno Martins Indi to Manchester United

Van Gaal introduced midfielder Clasie and central defender Indi Martins - both 22 - to the Dutch international team in the last two years and they played a big part in securing qualification for Brazil.

Now Van Gaal is understood to want to bring the Feyenoord pair to Old Trafford to help him launch his era as United manager which will offically start in July when the World Cup is over.

He is apparently not interested in two of his predecessor David Moyes' targets, Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas.

But has given United the green light to pursue the signing of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw and will monitor the recovery of another Holland international, Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman, who will miss the World Cup with ruptured knee ligaments.

Wayne Rooney says he's ready to be Manchester United captain

England striker Wayne Rooney hopes to be the Manchester United skipper but insists he wouldn't have a problem if Robin van Persie got the nod.

One of the biggest tasks for the recently-appointed Louis van Gaal when he takes over at Old Trafford after the World Cup is to appoint a new captain.

Nemanja Vidic, who was skipper since 2010, left the club to join Inter Milan at the end of last season while his vice-captain Patrice Evra also looks set to depart when his contract expires.

Many United fans want Rooney, who has been at the club for 10 years, to succeed Vidic, and the 28-year-old says he would be honoured to take on the role.

"I am interested in the captaincy," Rooney said. "I've captained United a few times and to get it on a full-time basis would be great."

Had David Moyes still been in charge, Rooney would have almost certainly taken over the armband.

But Van Gaal made Van Persie Holland captain last year and he recently described the former Arsenal striker as a "fantastic" leader.

Van Persie may have been in Manchester for just two years, but Rooney would not hold anything against Van Gaal should he appoint his compatriot over the England striker.

"I feel I am ready for (the captaincy), but it's the manager's decision," Rooney added.

"If he chooses someone else, then honestly I've got no problems with that. I will respect his decision. Robin is captain of his country, he has captained Arsenal and if Robin gets the nod to be captain, then I'm sure he'll do a great job."

Injury restricted Rooney's first-team opportunities last season, but when he did turn out, he was one of the few players to impress during an awful season which saw the club finish seventh in the Premier League.

The former Everton forward scored 19 goals, but he concedes his place in the team will come under threat unless he impresses the new boss, who has a transfer kitty of over £150million.

"When a new manager comes in, you always feel you have to prove yourself over again," Rooney added. "You don't know what ideas he has got or how he wants to play. I have not met him yet.

"So when we've finished the World Cup and when we go back into training, it will be like a new start and you've got to prove yourself again to make sure the manager picks you."

Rooney is pleased with Van Gaal's appointment, and the Dutchman's decision to name Ryan Giggs as his assistant.

"I think it is a great appointment," Rooney said at England's World Cup training camp in the Algarve.

"I think everybody knew for the last few weeks that Louis van Gaal was going to take over and the record he has got around European football is fantastic. He has won a lot of major trophies and it is great that it is sorted out now.

"It is obviously great that Ryan has stayed with him as his number two. It is exciting and it is going to be an exciting time at the club."

The Red Devils have been in talks with the Bundesliga champions over a suitable deal for the last two months, but David Moyes' sacking created an obstacle.

However, reports claim the deal has made significant progression after Louis Van Gaal formally replaced the Scot on Monday, with the 'principles of an agreement' now in place.

The Germany midfielder is approaching the final year of his contract and Bayern are looking to sell to avoid Kroos leaving on a free next summer.

And the Dutch boss is keen to make the 24-year-old one of his first signings as he looks to rebuild a broken United.

Van Gaal is understood to have a £200m budget to play with in the summer, with both the midfield and defence desperately in need of new talent.

Next season United will be without Nemanja Vidic (Inter Milan), Rio Ferdinand (free) and long-term attacker Ryan Giggs, who will take the position on Van Gaal's assistant manager.

Left-back Patrice Evra could also be on his way out of Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw reportedly close to signing as his replacement from Southampton.

Ryan Giggs made his first television appearance since becoming Louis van Gaal's No 2 at Manchester United.

The 40-year-old has certainly been busy since ending the season as United's interim boss and even interrupted his holiday in Dubai to link up with Diego Maradona for a new football show.

Giggs even hit the stage in full kit and boots as he joined Maradona and Michel Salgado on The Victorious, which aims to find the next football star in the UAE.

Speaking in an interview after the show, Giggs said: 'I'm here in Dubai on holiday but also to work on The Victorious programme.

'It's great to see the young players doing so well and being given a chance.

'I've really enjoyed it, it's been a really successful night.'

He tweeted a snap of the famous faces along with the message: 'With Diego, Ryan Giggs, Jehad and my friend Bakoor in The Victorious'

The United veteran recently revealed his decision to retire from football after 963 games for the club, during which time he won 13 Premier league titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League twice.

Giggs will now be assistant to new United boss Van Gaal next season.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has welcomed the arrival of new manager Louis van Gaal at the Old Trafford helm.

United confirmed the Netherlands national coach as their new manager, with Ryan Giggs as his assistant, on Monday afternoon and Rooney took to social media to welcome the Dutchman.

The 28-year-old tweeted: "Great to see Louis Van Gaal has been named @ManUtd manager. Looking forward to working with him."

Rio Ferdinand is leaving Man Utd after 12 years, with the club having decided against offering him a new contract. The defender's departure was confirmed on the day United had a £27m bid for Southampton's Luke Shaw rejected, signalling that a summer of rebuilding has begun in earnest.

Ferdinand said recently that he hoped to stay at United and he is determined to continue his career. The former England captain and centre-half, at 35, is keen to play on in the Premier League if he receives an offer that suits. He will weigh his options carefully and is sure to field offers from abroad, including from Dubai, China and Major League Soccer.

There is the strong possibility that Ferdinand will move into coaching at some point, so a player-coach role may be considered. Ferdinand, who is from Peckham in south London, had been away from his home town since being transferred from West Ham United to Leeds United in 2000.

Harry Redknapp, who gave him his first-team debut at West Ham, is now in charge of Queens Park Rangers. The pair continue to enjoy good relations and Redknapp may try to tempt him to join the club as a player and as part of his backroom staff.

Ferdinand's departure ends a highly successful spell at United where, having being signed from Leeds United in July 2002 for £30m, a record for a defender, he won six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two League Cups.

In a statement on his website Ferdinand implied that the decision to leave Old Trafford was his, although it is understood this was not the case. He has not been a regular first-choice this season and has been troubled by injury.

"I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future and after 12 fantastic years playing for what I regard as the best club in the world I have decided the time is right for me to move on," he said.

"I joined Manchester United in the hope of winning trophies and never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how successful we would be during my time here.

"There have been so many highlights, playing alongside some great players who have become good friends, winning my first Premier League title and also that fantastic night in Moscow are memories that I will cherish forever.

He added: "Circumstances didn't allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my team-mates, staff, the club and the fans for an unbelievable 12 years that I'll never forget.

"Winning trophies I dreamed about as a kid came true at this great club. I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me."

United tweeted: "#mufc would like to thank Rio Ferdinand for his long and distinguished service, and wish him well for the future."

As the club plan for their own future, they have been told by Southampton that Shaw is not for sale but United are still confident of securing the left-back's transfer, with Southampton's stance viewed as a bargaining position.

United value Shaw in the region of £30m, with the 18-year-old, who was named by Roy Hodgson in England's World Cup squad on Monday, keen on the move.

His preference is that the deal should be completed before the tournament begins in Brazil next month. United believe they can conclude the transfer that would make Shaw the most expensive teenager in domestic football history and the best rewarded.

According to the Guardian, United will make Shaw the highest-paid player ever under 20 by offering him a £100,000-a-week salary over five years and are set to beat off interest from Chelsea and Manchester City for his signature.

These terms would quadruple his earnings and would see Shaw placed well above the bracket of Adnan Januzaj, who when agreeing a fresh five-year contract at Old Trafford last autumn accepted a salary of around £60,000 a week.

United finished seventh in the Premier League following a dismal title defence and are expected to appoint Louis van Gaal as their manager this week. Although the club do not plan to have a formal unveiling of the Holland coach until after the World Cup, Van Gaal will have been consulted over Shaw to ensure the Dutchman would want him.

There are doubts over whether two of the coaching staff, Phil Neville and the goalkeeping specialist Chris Woods, will be kept on.

Shaw would represent the first signing of what United hope will be a major overhaul of the squad in the summer transfer window. Yet despite the club being in a state of flux until a new manager arrives – Ryan Giggs's interim tenure ended on Sunday – Darren Fletcher has claimed this should not concern players too much.

"I think you can sometimes worry too much about that," the midfielder said. "It's important to focus on yourself and make sure you come back for the new season in the right condition and whoever is the manager you have to try to impress him in pre-season and training. It's never been any different here and that's always been my mindset. It's a big squad with competition for places and you have to impress when you get an opportunity."

David Moyes' short time as Manchester United manager is over.

Moyes has been sacked less than one season into the six-year deal he signed on replacing Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.

United confirmed the news on their Twitter feed around 8:30am on Tuesday, although reports of his imminent exit had been circulating for almost 24 hours amid silence from the club.

A short statement thanked Moyes for "the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role" during his 11 months in charge.

Ferguson's successor has overseen a slump from Premier League champions to seventh in the table, and United will not play Champions League football next season.

United are also guaranteed their lowest points total in the Premier League era, and Sunday's comprehensive defeat at Everton - the club Moyes left for Old Trafford - was a final humiliation.

Moyes took just six points from 12 games against the six teams above United in the table, but as recently as Sunday he appeared confident he would be given time and money to reshape the club's playing squad.

Moyes did sanction deals worth more than £60m for Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata, but the task of spending a summer transfer fund reported to be in the region of £150m will now fall to his successor.

Moyes had been handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson to take over upon his retirement, urging those in attendance of his final match at Old Trafford to "stand by our new manager".

But with United having struggled so much under Moyes, the club's hierarchy were increasingly worried that he was no longer the right man to entrust this summer's £200 million warchest to.

Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs could take over first-team duties for the remainder of the season, while there is even speculation that Sir Alex could return to the dugout he vacated just a year ago.

Hard-working United’s defeat to Bayern Munich is no shame – but problems need addressing with transfers

Manchester United will most probably have no Champions League football for at least the next 12 months following a 4-2 aggregate defeat to the European champions Bayern Munich in Bavaria – however, there is no shame in defeat for David Moyes’ men.

David Moyes’ side were once again industrious and played with heart, but in top-level European competition that can only take you so far.

Although the impact of suspensions and injuries had taken it’s toll on Pep Guardiola’s squad, the sheer quality of Munich’s starting XI shone through as the game entered its final quarter and United simply couldn’t cope.

Guardiola once again proved himself to be the constantly thinking manager we all know through his invention of a ‘false two’, with Philipp Lahm being utilised as a right-back/central midfielder, such was the lack of support for either Danny Welbeck or Shinji Kagawa on the left-flank.

Bayern were at times sloppy, by their own high standards, just as they were against Arsenal in the previous round and could have been punished for it.

Patrice Evra's stunning strike just before the hour came out of nothing in terms of clever build-up play.

But, as Arjen Robben suggested in his post-match interview, that was the wake-up call the Germans needed and, after Mario Mandzukic drew them level, United’s defensive confidence unravelled. All of a sudden the match became far too open.

The space on the right was significant and Arjen Robben made premium use of it, causing Evra all sorts of problems for the remaining 25 minutes. United, after a fantastic physical effort, were spent and Bayern’s quality showed.

United’s defeat shouldn’t be the cause of too much complaint, of course, as this is how a malaise can snowball. But the work ethic from the players which was missing against Liverpool was at least in evidence.

It was a simple contrast in quality between the two teams which proved crucial.

A younger left-back capable of working for 90 minutes could have reduced Arjen Robben’s effectiveness when the game became stretched. A lynchpin of a holding midfielder could have taken pressure off the defence and given the back four time to rest physically by keeping the ball and distributing it sensibly.
These areas can’t be addressed before July, at least not officially, but they need to be.

Manchester United worked their socks off over two legs against the best team in the world and came up short – there is no shame in that. However, it will only be when higher quality players are brought in that United will be able to take on teams such as Bayern and face them on a level playing field.

Sir Alex Ferguson to take up 'long-term teaching position' at Harvard

The former Manchester manager Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to take up a "long-term teaching position" in executive education at Harvard.

The 72-year-old, who left his post as manager at Old Trafford last summer after 26 years in charge, will lecture in the Ivy League University's new programme entitled 'The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports', starting in May. It comes less than seven months after Ferguson's blueprint for managerial success was included in the October edition of Harvard Business Review.

"I'm delighted to have the opportunity and privilege to contribute to such a respected centre of excellence," Ferguson said.

"The time I have already spent at Harvard has been a stimulating experience and I look forward to developing my relationship and activities with the students, faculty and friends of the Harvard Business School community."

Ferguson conducted a series of interviews with the Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse in 2012, outlining what he believed to be the eight key elements of his old job including "Match the method to the moment" and "Rely on the power of observation".

Manchester United stars Phil Jones, David de Gea and Danny Welbeck will reportedly be handed new contracts as the club look to tie down their best young players, and there could even be another chance for Tom Cleverley to show he has a future at Old Trafford.

Reports claims that England internationals Jones and Welbeck will enter contract talks with the club - despite having two years left to run on their current deals – while de Gea will be rewarded for his outstanding form since finding his feet in the Premier League after his 2011 transfer.

Jones’ representatives have already been in talks with United manager David Moyes, and the belief is that the 232-year-old will be offered a long-term extension in order to tie the defender down to the club.

Moyes is hopeful that Jones can make the step up and feel the void left by captain Nemanja Vidic when the current captain leaves at the end of the season when his contract expires. Vidic has already confirmed he will head to Italy to join Inter Milan, leaving a gap at the back for Jones to become a regular starter. Rio Ferdinand could also be on his way out of the club should he not sign a contract extension.

The news that Cleverley could be offered a new deal could come as a surprise for some fans, given that the midfielder has been criticised for his performances this season by United fans. With 14 months left on his current deal, it had been though that the England international could be on the move in the summer given that Moyes will look to revamp the squad, but if reports are to be belived the 24-year-old could extend his stay with the Red Devils.

All in all, this has been a good week for David Moyes and Manchester United. Last Saturday’s victory against Aston Villa - comfortable in the end, though they did go 1-0 down - preceded Tuesday night’s spirited 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich. Moyes’ men were impressive against the European champions at Old Trafford, producing a disciplined performance brimming with character in which they repelled attacks, closed down space and battled determinedly.

Manchester United held Bayern Munich in midweek and will fancy their chances of following that up with a win at injury-hit Newcastle United.

Defending champions Bayern dominated Tuesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg, but Nemanja Vidic's header 13 minutes into the second half gave United a shock lead.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's clinical finish nine minutes later ensured the Bavarian giants secured a 1-1 draw, but a spirited display from United - who had been widely tipped to be beaten comfortably - gave manager David Moyes heart.

Moyes vowed to go "toe-to-toe" with the Bundesliga champions in the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday, but he must first turn his attention to Saturday's Premier League trip to St James' Park.

Champions League football may now be beyond the grasp of Saturday’s visitors - unless they knock Bayern out and go on to win the competition – but a win at St James’ Park would at least move them closer to Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, who currently occupy the Europa League places.

United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Alan Pardew's side at Old Trafford back in December to pile more pressure on Moyes, after his former club Everton had consigned them to another home loss three days earlier.

But the Premier League champions will be up against a very different Newcastle side to the one that gave the north-east club their first win at United since 1972.

Match-winner Yohan Cabaye moved on to Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window, while Pardew this week bemoaned an injury crisis that has hit the club.

Newcastle’s season has petered out somewhat in 2014, but they should still be able to claim a top-half finish. Alan Pardew’s side have lost three of their last four in the league - scoring only once during that period. That run of form has coincided with Loic Remy’s calf injury, and Saturday’s fixture may come to soon for the Magpies’ leading scorer. Tim Krul, Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko may miss out too. Pardew himself is still banned from the touchline so John Carver will continue to deputise in his absence.

A 4-0 hammering at his former club Southampton last Saturday inflicted more woe on Pardew, who will have to watch from the stands once again as he continues to serve a touchline ban for headbutting Hull City midfielder David Meyler.

And the Newcastle manager knows his side could be up against it once again this weekend.
He said: "It's difficult because Man United have had a little upsurge.

"They were terrific against Munich and will bring that bounce to our place.
"We're coming off a very poor performance.

"Everything points to them being favourites to win this game, but we have to prove that wrong."
While United have endured some miserable results at Old Trafford, they have a good record on their travels in the top flight this season.

No side can boast more league victories on the road in the this term than United's total of nine and they have come out on top in their last three away games without conceding a goal.

Left-back Patrice Evra will be back in contention after sitting out the clash with Bayern due to suspension, but Ryan Giggs (groin) and Rafael da Silva (hamstring) could miss out.
Robin van Persie (knee) will definitely not feature, but Moyes will be hoping Jonny Evans (calf) and Chris Smalling (hamstring) are available to return.

5 players to watch

Loic Remy - The home side are said to be sweating on the fitness of their top scorer, but they could do with him being available for this weekend's game against a weakened Man Utd back line. If Remy is fit enough to start he could cause some real problems with his pace and movement. The question is whether he can get in amongst the goals?

Nemanja Vidic - As there is seemingly a shortage of defenders in the reigning champions' squad at the moment, the visitors could do with a strong performance from Vidic - a lot like the one in midweek against Bayern Munich. Despite Newcastle's form, it promises to be a difficult test for the Serbian and the rest of the visiting defence.

Hatem Ben Arfa - Ben Arfa is one of the Newcastle players that can come up with something out of nothing by weaving away from players, creating a bit of space and either providing or scoring a goal. If he is given the time and space on the ball, he can hurt many sides.

Juan Mata - Mata should be one of the freshest members of the Man United squad since he's cup-tied in European competition. Having won a penalty last weekend, and scoring his first goal since joining the club, Manchester United fans will be hoping to see a lot more of the Juan Mata that made the club part with £37m for him.

Vurnon Anita - As always, the home side will look to get the upper hand in the middle of the park and Anita could be key if Newcastle are going to stamp their authority on the game. He will look to break up the play and ensure his side has good control of possession, and not allow the visitors to get settled.

Neville: Bayern's weakness is in defence

Gary Neville believes Manchester United need to exploit any weaknesses at the heart of Bayern Munich's defence but feels the reigning European champions remain the best team on the continent.

In a realistic appraisal of the Reds' chances of knocking out the favourites for this season's Champions League in an exclusive United Review column.

"I'd say, going into this game, we're hopeful rather than confident," he stated. "That's just being realistic – Bayern are at the absolute top of their game. You're talking about a team at the absolute peak of its powers, while Manchester United is in transition."

However, Arsenal caused problems for the Bundesliga winners in the previous round by unsettling Dante, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng at the back. Dante, who recently committed his future to the club, is suspended for the Old Trafford leg, which gives coach Pep Guardiola something to ponder.

"There's no avoiding the fact that this is the toughest draw United could have faced," Neville continues in Tuesday's official matchday programme. "I've seen a lot of Bayern in the last few years and they are rightly the favourites to win the competition again this season. For my money, they're the best team in Europe.

"Bayern are strong throughout the team but, if there is a weakness, the centre-backs don't like quick movement around them. If you can play quick one-twos around them, you might have some joy. Dante and Boateng are good centre-halves but it's the one area where you may perceive a weakness.

"Arsenal had some joy playing the ball in behind the centre-backs. When Arsenal did that, Bayern didn't look sure of themselves at all. It was the same when Arsenal played quick football around them. They caused Bayern problems and I think they can look a little fragile if you make runs forward and get right on top of them."

1.Wayne Rooney is in red-hot form

While many of United’s players look a shell of their former selves, Rooney appears to be a player reborn this season. His double against Aston Villa on Saturday backed-up a brace against West Ham the week before, and took him to 17 goals in all competitions this season – two less than Munich’s top-scorer Mario Mandzukic.

2.Pep Guardiola hasn’t won at Old Trafford

The Bayern coach’s last visit to the Theatre of Dreams ended in defeat as his Barcelona side went down 1-0 after a late Paul Scholes winner in the 2007/08 semi-finals. 9.Manchester is the danger-word for Bayern

It’s well worth remembering that Bayern have already lost to Manchester this season. Ok, so it was rivals Manchester City, and it was way back in December, but at least they showed the rest of Europe that they’re not invincible. 10.Giggs was phenomenal last time out

Up against it in the last-16 with his side 2-0 down on aggregate, Moyes turned to Ryan Giggs to inspire the side to a three-goal victory against Olympiakos. The veteran midfielder did exactly that, laying on two-goals for striker Robin van Persie – whose hat-trick earned United progression to this stage – and standing out as the best player on the pitch at an incredible 40 years of age. Giggs has not started a match since, but Moyes could be saving him in the hope of another virtuoso display on Tuesday.

David Moyes is hoping a new tactic will assist the downfall of Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals, after having a new chair installed in the Old Trafford dug-out with a built-in speaker that will enable Sir Alex Ferguson to maintain a direct line to him and help coach his fellow Scot through tonight's difficult fixture.

Moyes has come in for criticism recently, with a small selection of fans shelling out £840 for a banner reading “Wrong One – Moyes Out” to fly over Old Trafford during the 4-1 victory against Aston Villa on Saturday. But it now appears that the United manager is ready to consult his close friend Ferguson in a bid to turn around fortunes at the Theatre of Dreams.

Fans will be delighted that the empowering voice of Ferguson will be heard in the dugout once again, with the speaker in the new chair being loud enough for the backroom staff to hear over the noise coming from the 75,811 capacity. Having shelled out a considerable fee to Far East chair-maker firm Mak In Gitup, the United hierarchy are hoping the presence of Ferguson will help inspire the side to defeat the current Champions League holders this evening.

It is understood that a number of United’s players have had experience using the chair since it was installed over the weekend, with Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie all testing the latest gadget to hit Old Trafford with much amusement.

Giggs: We're not underdogs

Ryan Giggs was in bullish mood ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, insisting no team relishes a trip to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

German champions Bayern are many people’s favourites not only to win this quarter-final, but to go on and retain the European trophy they claimed for a fifth time last May.

But Giggs’ message at Monday’s press conference was clear: the Reds are still a force to be reckoned with and will come out fighting.

"We don't see ourselves as underdogs," the veteran said. "We see ourselves as Manchester United playing at home in the Champions League, so we're looking forward to it."

Giggs played in United’s most famous encounter with Bayern, the 1999 Champions League final, and was asked what the differences were between then and now.

"The players – apart from myself, obviously!" he said. "These are two huge clubs with two great histories, two teams who have played football the right way.

"But we won't be using 1999 as inspiration – some of the lads probably won't remember it!" Sitting alongside David Moyes at the event, Giggs was asked about his relationship with the manager, only the second one he’s had during 23 years in United’s first team.

"The relationship is good," he said. "There is no problem with the manager. I know a lot of stuff has been said [in the media] but I don't know where it has come from.

"Of course, as a player you want to play all the time but I know I’m not going to play every game. The last time I played [against Olympiacos] was my first start in six or seven weeks but we have a lot of players to choose from.

"You’ve seen from the performance against Olympiacos that I’m always ready to play. That’s what you have to do, not sulk because you’re not playing. You’ve got to be ready to play for the team and I was."

Asked if this could be his final European campaign as a player, Giggs added: "I don’t know. I’ll tell you after tomorrow maybe.

"I’m trying to enjoy this season and at the end I’ll take stock and see what I want to do. I’m enjoying my football as much as ever, I feel fit but I'll make a decision at the end of the season."

Manchester United face the mammoth task of taking on reigning champions Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

The two sides, champions in their domestic leagues last season, have experienced drastically contrasting fortunes this time around, with many tipping the German giants to be far too strong for their faltering opponents over two legs.

Bayern come into Tuesday's first leg at Old Trafford on the back of a 3-3 draw against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday, only the third time this season that Pep Guardiola's men have dropped points in the league.

Having already clinched the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win at Hertha Berlin last Tuesday, Guardiola rested several key players on Saturday as Bayern shift their focus to defending their continental crown.

A host of first-team regulars started on the bench, including the likes of Thomas Muller, Phillip Lahm and Arjen Robben, although Lahm was introduced after 25 minutes when Thiago Alcantara had to be withdrawn after suffering a knee ligament tear which will keep the Spaniard out for six to eight weeks.

On the other hand, United have followed romping to the Premier League title by 11 points last term with a season of struggle under new manager David Moyes as they enter a new era following Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Ferguson famously oversaw United's incredible comeback in the 1999 Champions League final, when stoppage-time strikes from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer broke Bayern hearts, and the competition has been a rare source of comfort for Moyes in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Sitting 10 points adrift of the Premier League's top four with only six games remaining, United's best chance of securing a place at Europe's top table next season looks to be by winning the title, although they will start this tie as underdogs.

They produced a stirring comeback in the round of 16, losing 2-0 to Olympiacos in Greece before Robin van Persie's hat-trick turned the tie around at Old Trafford.

However, the Dutchman will miss out against Bayern due to a knee injury suffered in that win, with Moyes also facing a shortage at right back in Chris Smalling (hamstring), Rafael da Silva (knock) and Antonio Valencia's (knee) collective absence.

Both sides will be forced to manage without first-choice selections in the backline, with United's Patrice Evra and Bayern's Dante serving one-match suspensions.

Moyes' men have won all of their home games in this year's competition, but that record will be severely tested against a Munich side that has not lost away from home in the Champions League since October 2012.

Bayern overcame English opposition in the last round, beating Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate and also knocked United out on their way to the 2010 final at the same stage they meet this year.

Form guide: The Reds have produced a somewhat mixed run of results recently. Two disappointing 3-0 home defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City overshadowed a month which otherwise featured wins over West Brom, Olympiacos and West Ham before Saturday’s impressive 4-1 victory over Aston Villa. This inconsistency has to an extent typified the campaign but David Moyes will be hoping for a strong end to the season and what better way to continue that than to beat the reigning European champions. Bayern, meanwhile, are in the midst of another memorable campaign. After scooping the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, the Bavarian club tied up the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin last week. Their 24th title was secured with seven games left, ensuring their focus is well and truly fixed on Europe.

Ins and outs: United's 18 outfield players on show at the Aon Training Complex on Monday morning included recent absentees Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Antonio Valencia. However, both Rafael and Tom Cleverley missed the open session, giving credence to concerns they could join Juan Mata (cup-tied), Patrice Evra (suspended) and Robin van Persie (injured) on the sidelines. Bayern's influential midfielder Thiago Alcantara picked up an injury in the 3-3 draw with Hoffenheim at the weekend but Pep Guardiola otherwise has a fully-fit squad to pick from.

Last XI: With one eye on Tuesday, Guardiola fielded a slightly weakened side against Hoffenheim with reserve goalkeeper Tom Starke starting behind a back four of Rafinha, Dante, van Buyten and Contento. The midfield had a more familiar look with Schweinsteiger and Thiago anchoring and Gömez, Shaqiri and Ribery providing the ammunition for lone forward Claudio Pizarro.

Betting: Official betting partners bwin have priced United to win the first leg at odds of 6.00 and Bayern at 1.45, while the draw is at a reasonable 4.60. In terms of winning on aggregate, you can back the Reds at 6.50 and Pep Guardiola’s side at 1.09.

Last meeting: Back in April 2010, Bayern wrecked United's hopes of reaching a third successive Champions League final by triumphing on away goals at Old Trafford. Darren Gibson and Nani (2) put the Reds 3-0 up at half-time, before goals from Ivica Olić and Arjen Robben proved decisive after the break.

The manager: Pep Guardiola is widely regarded as one of the finest managers in world football, having guided Barcelona to two Champions League titles and 11 other major trophies during his four-season reign at Camp Nou. The former Spain international left the Catalan club in 2012 and took a year out of football, before joining Bayern at the beginning of this season. He has since guided the club to the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Bundesliga title.

Star man: Despite contributing heavily to Bayern’s five-trophy haul during 2013, Franck Ribery finished third in the running for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or award, an annual prize that is given to the world’s best player. Rather than accepting his ranking with grace, the French wing wizard was left baffled by Cristiano Ronaldo’s victory. “I won everything, with the team and individually. Ronaldo won nothing," the 30-year-old told Munich’s TZ newspaper in January. “I feel I had earned this award. It's all politics. The Golden Ball doesn’t interest me anymore.” World’s best or not, Ribery’s talent is unquestionable.

Whistle-blower: Carlos Velasco Carballo will take charge of his first United match since the 2-0 home win over Marseille in 2011. Carballo is also known to Bayern, having refereed their last two Champions League quarter-final away games.

Rafael believes the current Bayern team are superior to the side he faced four years ago but takes heart from United's dramatic victory against them in the 1999 final, when Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored injury-time goals.

He explained: "They are better now, yeah. They have similar players. But [Manuel] Neuer is there and others too. But everyone is beatable in football. If you speak about United, we are the best club in the world. The history here is fantastic. After what happened in '99 everything is possible."

Now United are underdogs against the defending champions and Rafael added: "We have to do 200 percent or 300 percent to win."

The Brazilian admits he still blames himself for United's exit to Bayern in the 2010 quarterfinals and has bad memories of his last meeting with them.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were 3-1 ahead in the second leg at Old Trafford, and 4-3 up on aggregate, before Rafael was sent off and then Arjen Robben scored the goal that sent Bayern through.

And the defender said: "It's on my mind still. I will never forget that. I played so good in the first half but then I got sent off like I did it was good learning for me. It cost United the match. It was a lot of help for Bayern when they play against 10 men. I learned from that."

The right-back came off at half-time in United's 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday but declared his thigh problem will not prevent him from facing Pep Guardiola's side at Old Trafford.

He said: "I am OK. My thigh was a little bit tight. We just wanted to make sure I would be OK for Tuesday."

Buttner ready to stop Robben

A confident Alexander Buttner has insisted he is ready for the biggest task of his career and believes he can stop Arjen Robben on Tuesday.

Manchester United's second-choice left-back is likely to deputise for the suspended Patrice Evra against European champions Bayern at Old Trafford.

And that will pit him against his fellow Dutchman Robben, who scored the goal that eliminated United in 2010 and the winner in last season's Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

But Buttner said: "I feel confident about playing them. I know what Arjen Robben can do and I am ready for him.

"I have never played against him before and I haven't watched videos or anything like that to study him but I know enough from what I have seen to know how he plays the game. It is not under discussion how good he is! We all know that. This kind of big game is why you play football. It is what it is all about."

The former Vitesse Arnhem player has only started seven league games since joining United in 2012 but hopes that a fine performance against Robben could prove a springboard for him.

Buttner added: "It would be good for my career if I could do well against Robben. In the last two matches I have played well put in some good challenges and I hope I will build on that not just Bayern but after that as well. But I am focused 100 per cent on Bayern now and I am ready. I want to do well against Robben.

"I'll do everything I can to stop Robben and help the team get a win at home. I hope we can beat them. I know him a little. He's a good player -- everybody knows that -- and it's going to be a tough day.

"I think he's very good one against one, especially when he comes inside. I have to focus on that game and be confident in my own quality. I know I can get the better of him."
