Today, Jennifer and I remember the small life we lost this time last year. You know what? Miscarriages suck. We didn’t have long to become connected to our second child, but we loved him or her, and don’t want to forget them. That’s the scary part… We don’t want to forget. Even though God saw fit for this little one to only be part of our life for a few months, and though they never experienced the light of day, they are a part of our story and are a life to be celebrated.

“I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord. For some reason, I am sure we will not understand this side of heaven; the Lord chose this plan for our second. In this, we trust we’ll meet them someday.

You are loved baby.

This is not my typical nature to engage in social matters that may be polarizing or perceived as combative, but as a follower of Jesus Christ in a world that is quickly devolving into a quagmire of social, ethical and moral relativism I must speak up. As an Eagle Scout, I am very saddened and somewhat disgusted by the very inclusive new policy toward gender identity.

Our oath reads, “On my honor I will do my best to do MY DUTY TO GOD and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and MORALLY STRAIGHT.” I understand clearly that throughout the history of the BSA, there have been struggles in the organization in regard to social circumstances of the day (i.e. labor unions, war, and race). As a Christian in scouting in the 1980s and early 90s, the scout troop felt like a very safe and moral place to grow up. In my instance, and I think many across America, we were aligned closely with the church that hosted and sponsored us. The oath and law of the Boy Scouts felt closely aligned to the laws and teaching of the holy Bible. In fact, I believe it was James E. West, our first Chief Scout Executive that said, “Boy Scouts of America believes that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God.” These words were spoken in a time when America was still very much Christian.

Some of the historic stances chosen by the BSA grew the organization in a way that aligned with the tenants of God’s Word. But, last year you opened the doors to openly homosexual scouts and leaders and now you do the same for transgender persons. You have jumped the line of “straightness” in morality and are boldly accepting moral relativism in an attempt to stay culturally relevant.

I wholly disagree with the decisions the BSA is making and in my duty to God I stand against these new policies. As an Eagle Scout and a person that once loved the Boy Scouts of America, I will never encourage anyone I know to be a part of or support the organization, and sadly if I do ever have a son, we will not be a part of scouting. It was a tradition I had hoped to pass on to my children.

Our Huge Great God

Job was an honorable man, upright in the eyes of God. Yet he suffered.

He suffered HUGE!

Toward the end of the book, God spoke to Job -- I'd guess in more of a loving scream than a gentle whisper. But the realities of who God is were clearly communicated. How incredibly huge is our God!?

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?" - Job 38:4

“Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb... when I said,‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?" - Job 38:8-11

I pray that in times I struggle and hardship I can find this clarity from the Lord! That I would not think too highly of myself. That I would honor God's greatness and trust his leadership. After all, He is GREAT.

Breaking Points & Blessings

This past week, Jennifer and I had the privilege of an extended weekend at her parent's place on Lake Okoboji. Other than the mayflies and a few rain showers, it was a gorgeous week of relaxation. Too much food, some icy plunges into the lake, a little construction and wedding planning and lots of laying around -- it was glorious!

Now we are back in Madison.

Sometimes the reality of our current situation punches us in the face with blinding force. Welcome to our last two days. I am no closer to a job than I was two months ago. Jennifer has not gotten calls either. Financial conversations put us on edge and we are getting fearful of transitioning well and comfortably into marriage in a little less than three months!

This morning has been hard. Feeling overwhelmed. Depressed. Some doubts about the Lord's timing and questions about what his purpose is in all of this...

As I drove over to Jennifer's I heard a song I've heard many times before.

Today I needed to hear it.

This really resonates with me today. I hear, "We pray for wisdom / Your voice to hear / And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near / We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love / As if every promise from Your Word is not enough." Intellectually we as believers learn that God has a good and perfect plan for our our lives. But in moments of challenge, specifically extended challenging periods, we begin to doubt. Well, at least I begin to doubt.

I have to fight the thoughts that tell me "I know what is best for me." That say, "Right now, I NEED an income" and "I NEED to be setting up an apartment and a stable bank account for my bride-to-be."

Logic tells me those things are good and of utmost importance. But sometimes God isn't logical, at least in our limited understanding.

"I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) God promises his protection and provision in our lives. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." God says it first to Moses then to Joshua in Deuteronomy 31, but he says it to us in Hebrews 13!

As I write this, I find another blessing from the Lord! I've never noticed this before. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" is half of the sentence. The phrase immediately prior to that, within the same verse is...

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you..." (Hebrews 13:5)

Contentment.

It's hard to keep when things aren't going well. So, I will continue to pray for provision and direction in my job search, but I will also pray for more contentment.

Like the title of the song, I am greatly blessed. I have the love of a Godly, incredible and honorable woman I don't deserve. Even without a job, I am thriving in Madison. God is blessing Jennifer and I with friends, a great church, personal ministry, and providing incredible provision through the summer from some great and generous friends. We may not say it enough, but thank you! You know who you are.

When God is Silent - Part 2

Through the messages of Ephesians 2:8-10 and John 11 1-45, I know God has a purpose for me. It is no surprise to my Lord that I am struggling through this time of unemployment. He has good work for me.

So, what do I do in the meantime?

God is strategic. Look at creation - the placement of seasons alone - and you get a clear understanding of how strategic he is. Thankfully, I am strategic as well. Nowhere near His level, but I do love systems, order, and a well laid out plan. I must be strategic if I am going to succeed. So, what does that look like?

Clearly, to find a job I must apply to them. I must be organized. And I must follow up. That is the part I am not so great at. I must pursue potential employers.

I must also pursue contentment and God’s peace. God blesses us with peace. I rest heavily on that truth. If the Lord has called me to something, I trust that He will also give me the peace to pursue it. Now I am not diminishing the role of healthy fear, but I trust that under any fears that might come from intimidation in a potential job there will be underlying peace.

I must also pursue Him. God desires closeness with us. It doesn’t make sense to me that the creator of the universe wants a relationship with me, but nonetheless I am thankful. I need to spend time with Him.

Pursuit requires effort. I am prone to laziness. Even in unemployment, I can’t afford to dismiss Him. I have all the time in the world, yet I can’t seem to find the time to pursue Him well.

This may be a post that is more for me than it is for you. But I needed to write. I think there is a writer in me, and he needs to come out.

When God is Silent - Part 1

I can honestly say these past couple months in Madison have been the best months of my life. Simultaneously, I can honestly say these past months in Madison have been the hardest months of my life. I’m not going to beat around the bush. Unemployment sucks. Searching for a job in a difficult economy sucks. Being told repeated that you didn’t get the job really sucks. But…

Ephesians 2:8-10 says:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, I am obligated to believe that He has a great plan for my life. I do believe this. And it is about the only thing that keeps me going in my job search. Well, that and desperation. I know I am a good worker, intelligent and driven. I know I make a good employee. When I think like that, I wonder why I can’t get a job! I mean, I’m smart, kind, accomplished, attractive… why wouldn’t someone want to hire me? But… God has good work assigned for me. I just haven’t found it yet. He hasn’t revealed it to me. At least not the “good work” that gives me a paycheck!

So I wait.

My lovely fiancée, Jennifer has been spending time meditating on the story of Lazarus. In John 11, Jesus receives a message from Mary and Martha that their brother Lazarus (all good personal friends of Jesus) is not well. At the time he receives the message, Jesus is just a few miles away from Bethany, their hometown. If Jesus had chosen to, he could have gone that day and healed him. For whatever reason though, he chose to kill some time. He delayed his return and in the meantime, Lazarus died.

Our human nature asks, why did he not go? What purpose could he be serving by waiting? I am sure Mary and Martha wondered, “Where is our friend? Why is he not coming? If he were here, he could do something.”

But the Lord had a bigger plan. In John 11:14, Jesus plainly shares with his disciples that his delay will help their belief. Later, verse 45 states that many that saw what Jesus had done chose to believe in Him.

Now I am not trying to say that my future employment will guide many to believe in Jesus Christ as Savior. Who knows. Maybe it will. But what I take away from this is that Jesus has a bigger plan.

Time, Jesus & Questions

Spring has finally sprung in Madison, Wisconsin and I couldn't be happier about that. Unfortunately for me, my professional life has yet to take root in this state. I have more resumes than I could keep up with in businesses around the area, but I have still had minimal followthrough on the receiving end. The most exhausting part is that I more often than not never hear anything either way about the positions being filled.

I long for the day that someone calls me in for an interview and a job offer!

It's hard to believe I have been in Madison for nearly two months now! As I look at the calendar in my phone, it is also hard to believe that mine and Jennifer's wedding is 3 short months away!!!

... I am not sure what I intend to write today. I am glad I have found a quiet moment to write.

A week or two ago, I read Imaginary Jesus, by Matt Mikalatos. Check it out on Amazon.com by clicking on the link to the left.

I have never read a book quite like it. At times it's just plain funny. At other times sad. And in so many ways, very clever.

Imagine a book starting with the author and Jesus hanging out together in a coffee shop only to be interrupted by Peter, who comes in and punches Jesus in the face. The story takes off from there. As the title suggests, through the course of the story you are introduced to many "Imaginary Jesuses" -- as you read, some are just plain ridiculous, but others feel very comfortable and familiar.

The goal: Who do you really think Jesus is? What is important to your Jesus? And do you really know who he is?

I walked away realizing that I, like most people if they are honest with themselves, have an incomplete view of who Jesus is. I have grown up hearing about him. I have read about him. I have even talked with him. But I do not understand him -- at least not completely. And if I was honest, he might not be my best friend.

If I invested in my best friend to the degree that I invest in Jesus and knowing him, we'd have a pretty crappy relationship. Why then do I treat Jesus differently? Is it just because I know he will "never leave me or forsake me?"

Today I am full of questions. I am not sure I have the answers. All I know is I have a long way to go in knowing Jesus as friend.

Encouragement & Conviction From the Other Side of the World

I am so quick to give instruction. I think I know a lot. I like to sound smart. And I like having a plan.

But...

Mark 10:15 says, "Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

And

In Matthew 17, Jesus' disciples ask him, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" (referring to a demon-possessed child)

Jesus' response was simple. "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Having all the answers doesn't always work. In this job hunt I can think I am awesome all day long, but that doesn't get me a job. Prayer, connecting with Jesus, and trusting him for a job has got to be a HUGE part of the equation.

I was convicted of my simple faith this morning. I was reading my friend's blog. She is a teacher in Ghana. She is awesome and so faithful to the Lord's call on her life.

Intellectually, I say I trust that the Lord has the best plan in place for me. I have a plan too. I think my plan is pretty sweet. The Lord has a way of surprising us though. Imagine if I trusted his plan and let him be the guide.

That would be beyond sweet. And that is a reminder I needed today.

I want impact in the posts on this blog.

Even in this first week I have gained huge respect for "professional bloggers." It's hard to come up with fresh and exciting things on a regular basis.

Adjusting to my new life in Madison has been fun. And a little nerve-wracking. I have never done the job search thing before. Any time I have changed jobs in the past I have had the next one in place before I left the previous.

It's a little scary to have no income and little money in the bank.

But it's fun to listen to God's direction and dream about what life gets to be.

It's a fun time.

Often Your Great Ministry Grows from Your Greatest Weakness

Once upon a time, I heard the phrase (or a phrase so similar that I adapted it to this): Often your greatest ministry grows from your greatest weakness.

That phrase has haunted me for many, many years. If I own up to the truth of that phrase, I must share with the world my greatest weakness. I think truly effective leaders are honest with others, willing to share their vulnerability. So, why am I so scared of this blog? This is it.

I have lived my life with minimal regret. There are a a couple opportunities I did not take that I wish I had, but even more catastrophic are the opportunities I did take that I never should have. If you recall, I said in my first post that I made bad friends in elementary school. These "friends" are the ones that introduced me to my greatest nemesis - pornography. It's hard to image the destruction that pornography has had on me -- harmed friendships, fears of rejection and inadequacy, missed opportunity, and most devastating, severed fellowship with my Lord, Jesus Christ.

Men claim it as a "hidden sin." One that does not harm others -- often rationalizing to ourselves that by being here we are protecting others from ourselves. It doesn't make sense, but how often do rationalizations make sense? In our darkness, we imagine something exciting and live a private life that makes little of the one in front of us.

I John 1:6-9 says:

"If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

These are familiar verses, but I find that in my history as a man I have not lived the truth of them well. Just as mold and mildew grow in dark places, so does sin. When vulnerability is present, sin is brought to light, and killed.

I praise the Lord that he protected my virginity! There is much that has not been done. But, in the same breathe, there is much damage that is hard to forget. Images are hard to erase. Wrong views of women are are hard to change. Wrong views of relationship are hard to change. It's a slippery slope.

There is truth in the saying:

Sin will take you further than you want to go.

It will keep you longer than you want to stay,

and it will cost you more than you want to pay.

Could I have ever imagined as a kid that what I was doing would still cause struggle as an adult?

Thankfully, there is freedom in repentance. There is acceptance and forgiveness at the cross. God, through the sacrifice of his Son, chooses to extend eternal life and purity to us! So, I choose to rest on the cross, trusting that God is adequate and I am not.

...

In closing, what have I learned through my struggle with pornography? Here are some thoughts I hope helps you along the way.

FLEE!

II Timothy 2:22 says:

"Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

I like what the NASB version says. "Flee from youthful lust." Joseph understood this in Genesis 39. At the risk of looking like a fool, he ran from Potiphar's wife, even leaving his cloak in her hands. I imagine that as a man he understood he did not have the strength to stand there resolute and say no.

So what does that look like for you and me? How do we stand against sin and temptation?

• This is obvious, but not always realized -- cultivate a relationship with God. Pray. Read the Bible.

Less obviously...

• Get a hobby.

• Go for a run.

• Have a trusted friend you can call to go to coffee or ice cream with.

The key is to change your location. Reengage your brain in something else! Which ties into this...

Don't dwell on it!

This really is no surprise, but often not how we respond. We (or at least I) often assume, "if I struggle with this, I better start a Bible study, read a book, or talk to someone about this." Please do not get me wrong -- all these responses are healthy and necessary responses.

Consider this though: I tell you, "don't think about a pink elephant." As soon as I say that, what are you thinking about?

With space and healthy boundaries in place in your mind, you can begin to process what your sin is doing to you, how it is effecting your community, and how you can combat it. I find, at least for myself, that these healthy responses are just too difficult when being blinded by the closeness of my sin.

This morning I was reading in '48 Days to the Work You Love.' I highly recommend this book to anyone that is even slightly discontent!

In theory, I have always agreed with this following quote, but reading it fresh this morning brought to the forefront of my mind some intriguing thoughts.

Martin Luther once stated, "I advise everyone against entering any religious order or the priesthood unless he is forearmed with this knowledge and understands that the work of the monk and priests, however holy and arduous they may be, do not differ one whit in the sight of God from the works of the rustic laborers in the field or the woman going about her household tasks, but that all works are measured before God by faith alone."

I started my "professional life" in a church job. After two years I realized I could not survive on that paycheck and I reluctantly decided to move on. I found a groove in the "secular" workforce, but for the last year or so, I have felt pulled back to "church work," thinking that I would be more obedient to the Lord and please him more there. As I have been looking for work these past months, I am challenged to the core with the question, "what do you want your life to look like?"

Honestly, I feel like I have a decent grasp on life in the future -- huge goals with a personal ministry and huge goals with Jennifer as my wife. It's the next couple years, this time that sets the stage for my engagement and marriage, that has me baffled. I want this time to "matter" just as much as those dreams do!

... So, the job hunt continues as I try to trust that the Lord has the absolute best in line for me, and that if I choose to listen, He will guide me to that perfect job, whether in the church or not.

So, even as an unemployed dude, I still struggle with time management. Finding priorities, getting what needs to be done done and not worrying about what doesn't really matter doesn't change. I still find that I "can't get everything done."

So, for some time I have felt the Lord pushing my toward writing. I am not sure what being a "blogger" entails, but thus begins my journey...

You know the cliche, "there is no better time than now?" Well, for me there really is no better time than now! For the past decade, since graduating college, I have been in Texas. The vast majority of that time I had been way too busy! Today, I sit in Madison, Wisconsin, unemployed and homeless, but probably as happy, if not happier, than ever! I have an incredible fiancee I get to see pretty much every day with, and with this move north I get to decide what my life is going to look like! We often hope we could re-write where we are headed, but rarely do we get the privilege of a blank slate. Other than my Lord, Jesus Christ and my fantastic fiancee Jennifer, I really do have a blank slate.

So here I am...

When you start a blog, are you supposed to introduce yourself to the world?

It's almost like a first date.

So, do you put your best foot forward, or do you just be real?

Those that know me know I can be pretty blunt and honest. Maybe that is the best way to approach this. Maybe. We'll have to see.

I grew up a conservative, southern, small town boy. I was always in church. Accepted Christ as a youngster. Made bad friends through elementary school, but was always still a "good kid." I know I had a budding relationship with Christ, but it never really became personal until I graduated high school and went to Atlanta to work at the Olympics in '96. The "life changing" moment happened early that summer - my faith had become my own.

I loved being a part of Campus Crusade for Christ through college. That's really where my gifts were developed, my confidence was boosted, and I was given opportunity to grow in my walk with the Lord. Since college, I have continued to challenge myself and take larger and larger risks.

It may sound cheesy, but starting this blog feels like a big risk!

Am I ready to share myself with the world?

I hope so.

So, here I am. Possibly slightly liberal for East Texas, but now probably one of the most conservative in my new home town. I was a legalist. I got over that. I chose to be "high grace." I realized there must be truth in grace. So I'm working on that.

I'm not completely sure how I am packaging this gig.

I am a photographer. I am trying to revive the part of me that is an artist. And I am attempting to be a writer. I have done limited curriculum writing and led several small groups.
