Dozens of Iraqi protesters stormed the US embassy compound in Baghdad, Iraq on Tuesday Dec 31st, smashing the main door, and setting fire to the reception area after US Military launched attacks on Iran backed Kataib Hezbollah, killing 25 suspected terrorists as retaliation for last week's killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base . The protesters marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking until they reached the embassy. Bank staff and boyfriend who allegedly assaulted actress Chioma Toplis, to face trial

A bank staff identified as 36-year-old Vivian Okoro and her 36-year-old boyfriend Femi Omomeji, will be arraigned before an Igbosere Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos on January 11, 2020 for allegedly assaulting and inflicting injuries on nollywood actress, Chioma Toplis. It was gathered that Toplis and Vivian were living at 11 Abagbon Close in Victoria Island, Lagos at the time of the incident while Omomeji, head of graphics at the Union Bank Headquarters in Lagos lived at Church street in Ipaja, Lagos. Recounting how the incident occurred, Toplis said she was beaten, dragged on the ground which led to multiple fractures on her left leg and injuries all over her body after she questioned the defendants who she met removing the switch from her meter. According to her, this occurred just after the electricity supply to her apartment suddenly went off while she was watching television. The injuries she sustained allegedly led to to two bone surgeries on her left leg and attachment of a metal to the leg. The couple who were arraigned before the court on two-count charges bothering on assault and inflicting bodily harm in February 2019, were granted bail after pleading not guilty to the charges. The case was stalled as Toplis travelled to London to treat herself from the injuries she sustained from the incident. 20 year old herdsman, Laolu Isa, has confessed to raping to death a 54 year old woman, Mrs Mary Okereke, in Ebonyi state. Laolu who was paraded before newsmen at the state police command in Abakaliki, the state capital on Monday December 30th, said he committed the act under the influence of alcohol. According to him, the deceased woman insulted him and that led to a struggle before he was able to overpower her and raped her to her death. The incident happened in Ufuezeraku, Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara local government area on Saturday December 28th. Speaking to newsmen, Laolu said” I am Laulo Isa, I am from Nassarawa. I came to work here in Ebonyi. I was seriously drunk and saw a woman in the night walking along the road. I approached her for sex and she started abusing me”“We started abusing ourselves and I immediately pounced on her and she started struggling with me to free herself. I was seriously drunk at that time. As I was on her, a man who was passing flashed his torchlight on me and I ran away”.“I don’t know whether I was having sex with her but she was on the ground with me. I did not hit her with any object but is like I had sex with her for one round. An unmarried Zimbabwean woman and her mother have died after they allegedly drank a lethal concoction that was given to them by a self-proclaimed prophet. According to iHarare, Ms. Sithandazile Nyathi, 30 and her mother Ms. Thokozani Ncube, 51, who are based in South Africa died shortly after drinking a ‘cleansing’ concoction they allegedly got from a prophet named Brian Mpofu from Cowdray Park suburb over the weekend. The mother, Ms. Ncube, had accompanied her daughter to see the prophet. It was claimed in the report that the duo had approached the prophet to express Sithandazile's problems including marriage pressures as suitors were not coming for her. The deceased’s aunt, Seyiso Ncube, revealed that Sithandaziles had been in contact with the prophet since she was in South Africa. Speaking to the publication, Ms. Ncube’s sister, Ms. Elizabeth Ncube said: 'We were not there when this occurred but what we have been told is that they went to consult a prophet in Cowdray Park on Saturday. Sithandazile is the one who sought the services of the prophet and requested her mother to accompany her. They went there with our 15-year-old nephew who narrated to us what really transpired. He said the prophet gave the three of them some substance to induce vomiting claiming that he was casting out a bad spell. After that, he gave them a concoction consisting of bluestone, aloe vera, and lemon which he said they were going to drink at home the following day before eating anything. Prior to drinking the mixture, we are told that the prophet sent them a message, instructing them not to give it to the boy but share his dosage. Soon after drinking the mixture they started complaining that it was making them bleary, complaining of stomach cramps. Sithandazile instructed the boy to give her a bucket so that she could induce vomiting. My sister was of the view that probably that was how the medicine worked and she did not attempt to induce vomiting. When the boy brought the bucket, Sithandazile was already struggling to breathe prompting the boy to call his uncle who is my late sister’s husband. We are told before my sister’s husband could attend to Sithandazile, he discovered that his wife (my sister) was not responding when he called her in her bedroom and when he went in to check on her he discovered that she had white fluids coming out through her mouth and nose. Bulawayo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Precious Simango also confirmed that they are investigating the issue. 'Yes, we received a case where mother and her daughter died after drinking some poisonous substance they were given by a self-proclaimed prophet. I can’t say much at the moment as it could jeopardize our investigations. We have, however, arrested a suspect in connection with the pair’s death.' Naira Marley given last chance to appear in court over alleged car theft

Naira Marley has been given his last chance to appear in court over car theft charges levelled against him. Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias who gave the order today December 31, said a bench warrant would be issued for the rapper's arrest if he fails to appear before the court on January 14, 2020. The singer is standing trial over an alleged car theft alongside his two brothers; Idris Fashola, 18; Babatunde Fashola, 24 and one Kunle Obere, 22. The defendants who are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, assault and obstructing the arrest of Naira Marley were first arraigned on December 16, but the rapper wasn't present. Three of the defendants were granted N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum, as Mr Elias ordered the Investigative Police Officer (IPO) to produce Naira Marley in court today, December 31. Woman wrongly told she had cancer when software misheard doctor

A woman suffering from a yeast infection was wrongly told she had cancer when a new hospital speech recognition system mistakenly changed a word. Nicola Denyer, 39, attended an appointment for her uncomfortable throat but was misdiagnosed by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (QEQM) Hospital in Margate. The new software had incorrectly changed the word "candida" (common yeast infection) to cancer, which led to the mix-up. Her GP was sent a letter that read: "Flexible nasal endoscopy confirms presence of cancer at the base of the tongue, which can certainly account for this lady’s symptoms." Mrs Denyer’s partner Paul Valentine, who lost his wife to cancer eight years ago, said he suspected a mistake had been made as the rest of the letter suggested there were no serious issues. Mr Valentine, 64, said: "It’s shockingly bad this was able to happen. I was sure it was a mistake, but the word had been used so you can’t help but worry. I told them this is a word not to be played around with. If this had happened to someone else who didn’t realise it was a mistake, it could push them over the edge." Mr Valentine struggled to get any response from the hospital despite leaving numerous messages. He added: "In the end I finally made contact and was told this often happens. To get a letter saying she had cancer, even though I thought it might be a mistake, was awful. I lost my wife to this dreadful illness. My partner read the letter and said ‘oh my god’ but I told her not to panic, that it looked like an error." Mrs Denyer was eventually put at ease a week later when she received a follow-up letter from the hospital apologising for the mistake and telling her she did not have cancer. Nigerian visa applicant jailed for filing fake document with US Embassy

A Nigerian visa applicant has been handed a jail sentence after being arraigned for presenting a forged letter of invitation to the officials at the United States Embassy in Lagos. 38-year-old Lukman Owolabi Ogunsuada who presented the fake letter to secure B1 and B2 Visa categories, was found guilty of the two count charges of forgery preferred against him by the police at the special fraud unit (PSFU) Ikoyi. Before the court judgement in the trial which spanned for three years, the convict confessed to editing the original letter of invitation with his phone and inserting his name. Ogunsuada said he thought the embassy officials won't be able to detect that the letter of invitation was forged. Chief Magistrate N. A Layeni of Apapa Magistrates Court sentenced Ogunsuada to one year imprisonment or alternatively to a fine of N100, 000 and 200 hours community service in count one of the charge. He was also handed a fine of N20,000 in count two of the charges. The sentence is expected to run concurrently. Military to withdraw soldiers from some parts of Nigeria, police to take over fight against internal insurgency

The Nigerian military at the end of the security meeting which was held in Abuja on Monday December 30, annonced its plan to withdraw troops from some parts of the country. Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas who made the announcement, said the withdrawal is aimed at allowing civil authorities take over the duties of ensuring the security of lives and property in such places and also allow the military focus on its primary duty of defending the nation against external aggression. He also disclosed that the withdrawal of troops will be done after an assessment to determine areas where peace has returned to. He said; “It is the work of the police to handle internal security since Nigeria is not at war.“The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will support the police to provide internal security." Commenting on the aftermath of the viral photo, Media personality Kimani disclosed that the lady lost the gig because she was blacklisted by the company that wanted to hire her. She tweeted; This is rather unfair, knowing this was Photoshopped. Sent this lady's handle to a client yesterday morning only to receive an email just now saying she's been blacklisted. Bala Elkana, the spokesperson of the Lagos state police command, has confirmed the arrest of 11 miscreants at Eko Hotel and Suites, venue of Naira Marley's concert, Marlian Fest, which held last night. Earlier today, a video of some of the acclaimed Naira Marley fans aka Marlians, locked up in a taskforce van, surfaced online. The men who claimed to be Marlians were seen in the video begging the police and other officers to release them after they were picked up. Recall that videos of some of the suspected fans of the singer scaling the fence of the Eko Hotel and Suites to gain entrance into the concert surfaced online. LIB reached out to Mr Elkana for his comment on the arrest. According to him, some of those arrested were miscreants outside the Hotel, who attempted to steal the phones of those attending the concert. He said others that were arrested tried forcing their way into the venue when they had no ticket. According to Bala, the concert was generally peacful''We have 11 suspects arrested and mostly outside the event venue. These are miscreants who come mainly to steal. Some of them were arrested after stealing handsets from some fans that wanted to enter. So when they attempted stealing handsets, police quickly rushed and arrested them and picked them. Some of those arrested also had no tickets, they just came trying to force their way into the event venue. The tight security could not allow them and so they were picked and handed over to the police for trying to cause commotion there. They were picked by the police and other security outfits that were there. But the concert was generally peaceful, the whole event was peaceful'' he said Bala said the suspects are currently being detained at the Bar Beach police station and they would charged to court. Kate Middleton's siblings and their mother were spotted soaking up the sun on a beach while enjoying a family holiday in St Barts. Pippa Middleton, 36, who welcomed her first child a year ago, showcased her trim figure in a grey bikini. Her brother James Middleton, 32, was also present with his fiancée Alizée Thevenet, to whom he announced his engagement in October. Kate Middleton's mother Carol, 64, was also not left out of the fun as she donned an orange bikini. The Duchess of Cambridge, who is currently enjoying the Christmas season in England with the royal family and her three children Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, five and Prince Louis, one, did not join them. 'Falana wants to score cheap media publicity by asking me to apologise to Sowore, Dasuki'- Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, says

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said that the release of publisher and convener of Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore, and a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, were done out of compassion. Malami made this known in a statement released by his spokesperson, Dr Umar Gwandu, while reacting to a statement issued on Sunday December 29th by Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN). Falana had demanded that Malami apologizes to Sowore and Dasuki for allegedly offering wrong advice to the Federal Government which resulted in the prolonged detention of Dasuki for four years and Sowore for over four months despite different court orders granting them bail. Reacting to Falana's comment demanding an apology to Dasuki and Sowore, Malami in his statement, said he is disappointed at the Senior Lawyer for making such demands when he knows that the release could only have been granted based on valid reasons which includes compassion.“First, it is beyond doubt that the Federal Government of Nigeria or any prosecuting authority has been vested with constitutional right of appeal in criminal prosecutions. These rights extend to rulings on bail and right to seek to vary terms of bail, among others. Thus, in any circumstance where this right is waived by the prosecution, it can only be for valid reasons, including compassion, after all connected issues have been duly considered.” the statement read He accused Falana of trying to garner media hype in condemning the Federal government's kind gesture of releasing Sowore and Dasuki.“It is further appalling to note that in a bid to garner media hype in condemnation of a valid governmental action taken in good faith and in the interest of the general public, Mr Falana, SAN, resorted to quoting non-existing sections of the constitution by stating that, Mr Malami (SAN), should have apologised to Col. Dasuki (retd.) and Mr Sowore in accordance with Section 32(6) of the 1999 Constitution…It is unfortunate that a senior member of the bar could resort to concoctions and fabrications of non-existing provisions just to score cheap media publicity.It is important to highlight that the statement issued by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, which Mr Falana was allegedly responding to, did not howsoever state that the duo of Dasuki and Sowore were released further to the constitutional provisions on Prerogative of Mercy.A lawyer of Mr Falana’s status should thus desist from stretching arguments beyond reasonable limits in order to score cheap political points.
