ISI Nabbed Traitors In 1967 And 2011, But Pakistan Lost

43 Years Ago, Pakistani Politicians Defended Treason, They Do It Again

We ignored Agartala conspiracy, released the traitors who broke up the country two years later. We are doing it again in The Memo case.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—The coincidence is unnerving. Forty-three years ago, Pakistan’s politicians and courts acquitted a traitor accused of helping a foreign country invade Pakistan.

The evidence of treason was strong. But the politicians ganged up and generated enough disinformation against the military and ISI and to cover up for the traitor.

The traitor was released.

The case was dropped.

Two years later, the traitor led a revolt in support of the invading army of India.

Today, Pakistani politicians and courts repeat history: they have almost buried a case of treason, The Memo case.

This is a case where a group of Pakistanis attempted to conspire with another foreign power, the United States, to neutralize Pakistan’s military and nuclear weapons. Had this Memo happened when George W. Bush was president, there would have been many takers in Washington. Unluckily for President Zardari, Husain Haqqani and their other unnamed accomplices, there were no takers this time although many people in Washington continue to spew venom against Pakistan and its military every chance they get.

The Agartala conspiracy case of 1969 bears many similarities to The Memo case of 2011, where the main accused, former envoy to Washington Husain Haqqani, was ordered released by the Supreme Court today.

Even during the trial, he and his spouse Farahanaz Isphahani, a Member of Parliament and a presidential aide, were allowed to manage a media campaign against the country’s military in foreign press, spreading disinformation about possible assassination if the trial went ahead. Haqqani’s counsel issued statements accusing the military of a range of crimes, and the government’s media machine bluntly threatened a key witness and planted stories to paint the case as a ploy by the military against failed politicians.

WHAT HAPPENED AT AGARTALA?

A brave Pakistani intelligence officer, Lt. Col. Shamsul Alam, the commander of the East Pakistan Detachment of Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, uncovered the conspiracy through first-class intelligence work.

The facts were straightforward. A politician, Sheikh Mujeeb, and an accomplice, Mohammad Ali Reza, traveled to eastern Indian city of Agartala and held meetings with Indian intelligence officers to convince them to back his plan to break away East Pakistan from the federation and establish an independent pro-India state.

Pakistani spies, including very able native Bengali officers, pursued the secret meetings and contacts throughout 1967. Mujeeb and his gang was nailed by the end of the year.

In January 1968, a sedition case, State vs. Mujeebur Rehman and others was launched. A total of 35 key conspirators were arrested, both civilian Pakistanis and military officers.

The Indian agents were so rattled they planned to assassinate the ISI officer who collected the evidence against them. This would have eliminated an adversary and intimidated junior intelligence officers into abandoning the case.

A Pakistani officer from East Bengal Regiment was recruited to kill Lt. Col. Alam. But Alam was a brave officer. He not only resisted the attackers but chased them and exposed them. For this he was awarded Pakistan’s highest medal of bravery in peace times, the Sitara-e-Basalat, or the Citation of Bravery.

The process of compromises and cover-ups began soon afterward.

Some 1,500 Pakistanis were arrested. There were 227 witnesses and 7 approvers. The trial dragged throughout 1968 and until January 1969. The number of accused facing trial fell dramatically for political expediency.

The traitors gained public sympathy because of disinformation by politicians and media and delay of justice by judiciary. This helped politicians portray the traitors as victims of military highhandedness. They were released early 1969 and the case was dropped.

WERE THERE TRAITORS IN AGARTALA CASE?

Forty years later, some of the accused admitted that the charges against them were true. Deputy Speaker of Parliament in Bangladesh, Shawkat Ali, who was a conspirator on trial in 1968, admitted during open house proceedings that all treason charges against them were true and that they conspired with India to break up of Pakistan.

Another Bangladeshi legislator, Tofael Ahmed, said had ISI not uncovered the conspiracy, the secession of East Pakistan would have happened ‘peacefully’, with help from Pakistanis recruited by India.

These admissions were made in public in Bangladesh in 2010 and 2011. But they came forty years late. Thanks to the conspiracy of silence by Pakistan’s political parties, government, judiciary and the courts, the traitors succeeded in helping India launch an unprovoked invasion of Pakistan in 1971.

In The Memo case, former civilian officials, some retired military officers, and senior officials in the Zardari government planned to decapitate Pakistani military. The case is being buried now for political expediency.

Let’s hope Pakistan and Pakistanis do not pay a bigger price for this a few years down the road.

Chinese cat-eyed boy Nong Youhui has cat-like night vision

Health experts in China say a boy has developed a rare condition where he can see perfectly in near pitch black conditions.Dubbed ‘Cat boy’ by UK’s tabloid The Sun, medical tests showed that Nong Youhui can read perfectly without any light and sees as clearly in the dark as most people do during the day.

News first broke of Nong Youhui’s cat-like eyes in 2009 when the boy’s father, Nong Shihua took him to a hospital in Dahua, southern China as he was worried about Youhui’s bright blue eyes.

Early this year, an eye specialist visited the boy in his home village to examine his eyes and documented his visit.

In a YouTube video uploaded on January 20, 2011, the specialist shone torch light in the boy’s eyes and they allegedly emitted blue-green light. Unfortunately, this is not clear in the video.

The video – titled “Alien Hybrid or Starchild discovered in China? 2012″ – also shows footage of the boy’s father and teacher who gave more information on the boy.

Nong Shihua, the boy’s father, said doctors told him not to worry about Youhui’s eyes and that they would be fine as he grew up.

Nong observed that his son’s eyes remained the same colour over the years but did not seem to harm the boy. The family soon got used to the abnormality.

When the boy was in school, his teacher noticed that Youhui squinted and complained about blurry vision in bright light.

One of Youhui’s friends told the teacher that his eyes were like a cat’s and that he could see in the dark.

Intrigued, the teacher shone a torchlight in Youhui’s eyes and they flashed. He then invited the boy to catch crickets at night. Without using a flashlight, Youhui managed to catch some.

Rumours of his ‘gift’ soon spread and a few reporters got him to do tasks in a dark room, including answering some math questions. Not only did he see in the dark, he also answered all of them correctly.

Experts believe he was born with a rare condition called leukodermia which has left his eyes with less protective pigment and more sensitive to light.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—In 1487, Abu Abdallah Mohammad was the 22nd sultan of the great city of Alhambra. Known to the Spaniards as Boabdil, his tiny physique also won him the nickname el chico.

In that year, he sought foreign help against his father and uncle.

He wrote a memo to Ferdinand and Isabelle, the most powerful sovereigns in the region, to seek help and promised assistance in helping them take over Spain.

He offered to make his emirate a tributary kingdom under Ferdinand and Isabella.

His wish was granted. But within five years, in 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella turned to Alhambra and forced Abu Abdallah, or Boabdil, to surrender and leave for exile.

Boabdil was the author of the treacherous memo. The name of his prime minister was Yusuf.

Under another Yusuf, a memo was written last year to a foreign power, seeking help to weaken Pakistan’s military and intelligence. In exchange, a promise was made to make Pakistan a denuclearized vassal of that foreign power.

Five hundred years after Boabdil’s memo, history is being repeated. Another memo has been written on identical terms.

The only difference is that the Pakistani memo has been exposed.

But even then the courts and opinion makers are playing games, while the Pakistani military watches.

A compromise or a deal on the Memo would fatally damage Pakistan. There is no turning back now. The ghosts of Agartala still haunt us after 40 years.

Treason-democracy-elections-rebellion-civil war-invasion-defeat-dismemberment-humiliation! Memo is today’s Agartala. If it is forgiven today, the dreaded sequence would turn Indus River red with Pakistani blood. The war would annihilate us as it did in 1971. Pakistani media must wake up and see how history is repeating itself.

The Pakistani nation must clearly understand that a sinister web of treachery is being woven against Pakistan and ISI by the government and its allies in political parties and media. The Memo case has almost been killed. Now the Asghar Khan/Mehran Bank case has been revived. The authors of The Memo wanted this case revived to divert attention away from The Memo and to take revenge from the military.

The links and timings between memo case and the Mehran Bank case are stunningly clear. Also, the missing person's case is also being used as a tool to settle scores against ISI. The traitors, snakes and idiots have all joined hands to attack, humiliate and destroy the last defense wall of Pakistan. Memo is a reality just as the Agartala conspiracy was. But back then, too, the political parties joined hands against our military and protected the main accused, the Husain Haqqani of that time, Sheikh Mujeeb.

The result was elections and war and breakup.

History is being repeated today. Political parties and media are ignoring The Memo, attacking ISI and demanding elections when Pakistan is encircled for war.

Shame on our politicians, media, judges and the ulema of this nation who have willingly decided to ignore and bury The Memo. Those who compromise their honor, freedom and faith deserve to be invaded.

For God sake, wake up.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has already declared NRO unconstitutional. The court has also declared voting lists as bogus. These were the voting lists that brought this government to power in 2008.

What is the moral standing of a government that has come to power through unconstitutional and bogus means?

If the government can violate the constitution so audaciously to destroy the country, why can’t our military do the same to save Pakistan? Overthrowing the government is no more a legal or constitutional issue. It is a national duty and patriotism.

The United States does not possess conventional armament powerful enough to destroy Iran's deeply hidden nuclear facilities, U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal late Friday, with American Defense Secretary Leon Panetta saying Washington was "still trying" to develop more powerful bombs.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday extended his personal guarantee to provide an impregnable security cover to US businessman Mansoor Ijaz and asked him to arrive in the Punjab to record his statement in the memo scandal.

It is pertinent to point out that both Allama Iqbal International Airport and Benazir International Airport are located in the Punjab. Responding to questions, the Punjab chief minister said that he would take personal responsibility for providing complete security to Ijaz during his visit to Pakistan.

Shahbaz said that he would welcome Ijaz and provide him security till his departure from Pakistan. He also requested the Supreme Court- appointed judicial commission to record Mansoor’s statement in Lahore.

While responding to a question regarding provincial government’s restrictions inside the airport he said the Supreme Court would be approached to gain the authority.

پاکستانی حکومت اور میڈیا نے صدر آصف علی زرداری کے میانمار کے دورے کے ایک مخصوص پہلو پر توجہ مرکوز رکھی: میانمار کی اپوزیشن لیڈر سو کی کے ساتھ ملاقات۔ صدر کے لئے یہ موقع تھا کہ وہ اپنے بیٹے اور بیٹی کو میڈیا کے سامنے پیش کریں اور اپنے آپ کو برما کی اپوزیشن لیڈر کے برابر کے جمہوری رہنما کے طور پر خود کو پیش کریں۔

یہ ملاقات دراصل پاکستانی حکومت کی طرف سے ایک پراپیگنڈہ مھم تھی، جسے انگریزی میں 'پبلک رلیشنز سٹنٹ' کھتے ہیں۔ پاکستان کو میانمار کے اندرونی معاملات میں مداخلت نھیں کرنی چاھیئے۔ ایک شبہ ہے کہ صدر زرداری کی برما کی اپوزیشن لیڈر سے ملاقات ان کی حکومت کا امریکی نواز ہونے کا اسناد ہے، اور یہ انھونے امریکیوں کو خوش کرنے کیلیئے کیا۔

اگرچہ صدر زرداری کی طرف سے میانمار کے ساتھ ہمارے تعلقات کو مضبوط کرنے کی کوشش قابل ستائش ہے، ان کے دورے کا یہ حصہ زیادہ تر پاکستانیوں کیلیئے کسی اھمیت کا حامل نھیں تھا۔

میانمار میں اپنے قیام کے دوران کہیں زیادہ اہم بات صدر زرداری کی بہادر شاہ ظفر، مغل خاندان کے آخری بادشاہ، کے مزار پر حاضری ہے۔ مغلیہ سلطنت برطانوی قابضوں کے ہاتوں 1857 میں زوال پذیر ہوئی تھی۔ یہ بھت بڑا تاریخی واقعہ تھا جب برصغیر میں مسلم حکمرانیت ختم ہوئی۔ ان مسلمانوں کی نسل آج پاکستان کی صورت میں موجود ہے۔ مغلیہ سلطنت کا دار الخلافہ پرانا دلی تھا جسے آج بھارت کے نیو دلھی کے نام سے جانا جاتا ہے۔

مسلم سلطنت کے خاتمے کے بعد پاکستان تحریک آزادی کا سلسلہ شروع ہوا اور 90 سال کے اندر پاکستان آزاد ہوا۔

پاکستان کی شاھی تاریخ

صدر آصف علی زرداری نے مغلیہ بادشاہ کے مزار کے دیکھ بھال کے لئے پچاس ھزار ڈالر کا عطیہ دیا ہے۔

پاکستانی صدر کی طرف سے یہ چھوٹا سا اقدام بھت بڑی تاریخ کی عکاسی کرتا ہے۔ یہ اچھا موقع ہے کہ ہم مختصراً اپنے قارئین کے ساتھ پاکستانی قومیت اور پاکستانی قوم کی تاریخ کی یاد تازہ کریں۔

اس مختصر سی تاریخ کو سمجھنا جدید پاکستان کو سمجھنے کیلیئے کلید ہے۔

پاکستان مغلیہ اور دیگر مسلمان سلطنتوں کی پیداوار ہے بلکل اسی طرح جیسے ترکی عثمانی سلطنت اور ایران صفوی سلطنت کے پیداوار ہیں۔

پاکستان خطے میں برطانوی قبضے کے نتیجے میں پیدا نھیں ہوا تھا۔ درحقیقت پاکستان وسطی ایشیا اور برصغیر میں دس صدیوں کی مسلمان بادشاھاتوں کا نتیجہ ہے۔

اس تاریخ کے تناظر میں پاکستان کی آزادی ناگزیر تھی، اور اسکی آزادی کا وقت قائد اعظم محمد علی جناح کی عظیم قیادت میں 1947 میں طے پایا۔

پاکستانی وہ قوم ہے جس کی ثقافت اور تھذیب دس صدیوں میں تشکیل پائی۔

اگرچہ شھنشاھیت کی تاریخ 1857 میں زوال پائی، لیکن ہم نے پاکستان کو 90 سالوں میں حقیقت میں تبدیل کردیا۔

14 اگست 1947 میں پاکستانیوں نے برطانوی قبضے کو ختم کیا اور اس خطے میں اپنی دس صدیوں پر مشتمل تاریخ کو لے کر ایک جدید دور میں داخل ہوئے۔ پاکستانی تھذیب نے اپنے عروج پر شاندار ثقافت کو پیدا کیا، یہ ثقافت اور ادب تین زبانوں پر مبنی تھی: فارسی ، ترکی اور عربی۔ یہ ثقافتی ورثہ آج بھی اردو اور دیگر مقامی پاکستانی زبانوں میں موجود ہے اور اس عظیم ثقافت کے نشان آج بھی دنیا کے توجہ کا مرکز ہیں۔ [تاج محل بھارت میں اور دیگر بے شمار شاندار تاریخی عمارتیں جو آج پاکستان میں کھڑی ہیں]۔

پاکستان ایک لمبی کہانی ہے جو 1947 میں ایک نئے دور میں داخل ہوئی اور ایک نیا باب رقم کیا۔

یہ ہے مختصراً وہ پیغام جوصدر پاکستان نے برما میں آخری مغل بادشاہ کے مزار پر حاضری دے کر دنیا کو دیا۔

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Pakistani government and media focused on one aspect of President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to Myanmar: the meeting with opposition leader Suu Kyi. It was a chance for the president to put his son and daughter in the limelight and offer himself as a democratic leader at par with Suu Kyi.

This meeting was largely a public relations stunt by the government. Pakistan has no reason to meddle in the internal affairs of Myanmar. There is a suspicion that Mr. Zardari’s move to meet Suu Kyi was an attempt at reasserting the pro-American credentials of his government.

While President Zardari’s effort to strengthen our ties to Myanmar is commendable, the Suu Kyi part of his visit was largely of no concern to Pakistanis.

A far more important event during his stay in Myanmar was the President’s visit to the mausoleum of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last emperor of the Mughal Dynasty. The dynasty fell at the hands of British army on 1857, signaling the downfall of Muslim rulers of South Asia, the ancestors of Pakistan. The capital of this dynasty was old Muslim Delhi, expanded today into New Delhi, the capital of India.

The downfall of Muslim empire set off a chain of events that led to the Pakistan Independence Movement and culminated 90 years later with the emergence of Pakistan.

IMPERIAL HISTORY

President Zardari donated $50,000 for the upkeep of the mausoleum. The emperor died here, exiled by the British occupation.

This gesture by the Pakistani president signifies an important fact of Pakistani history. And this is a good opportunity to remind our readers of this fact because it explains the genesis of Pakistani nationalism and the history of Pakistani nation.

Understanding this history is key to understanding modern Pakistan.

Modern Pakistan was born out of Mughal Empire in the same way that modern Turkey resulted from Ottoman empire and today’s Iran was a result of Safavid empire.

Thus, Pakistan was not a chance happening, a result of British occupation. Instead, Pakistan is a culmination of ten centuries of Muslim empire in Central and South Asia.

And Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of Pakistan Independence Movement, was the legendary leader who hastened the emergence of Pakistan, a country that was bound to emerge eventually.

JINNAH HASTENED PAKISTAN

Pakistan is a nation that formed and gelled through ten centuries of imperial rule, culture and religion. It was destined to emerge. The Quaid made it happen in 1947.

Pakistan was destined to emerge thanks to our history of a thousand years in this region. It was a matter of time. A destiny’s hand made it happen in 1947. That hand is Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the Pakistan Independence Movement and the man who helped create modern Pakistan.

Pakistan’s ancestors, the Muslim dynasties of Central and South Asia, ruled the region for centuries. This rule came to an abrupt end in 1857 at the hands of British invaders. But it only took us 90 years to regain our power to rule our destiny again; 90 years from 1857 to 1947, gaining independence from imperial Britain. Modern Pakistan could not claim all the former glory of its ancestors. Most of the dominion ruled by our ancestors, the last of them the Mughal Dynasty, went to Indians who were in the majority in those dominions. That is how India gained independence from Britain one day after Pakistan. India came into existence for the first time in ten centuries as a nation ruled by its indigenous majority, freeing itself from both Muslim and British rule.

In Pakistan, 14 August 1947 marks the day when Pakistanis successfully ended British occupation and formalized their centuries-long history of successive empires in Central-South Asia. This history is credited at its peak with producing brilliant art and culture in three languages: Persian, Turkish and Arabic, and producing wonders such as the Taj Mahal, located in today’s India, and other countless magnificent historic buildings that stand today in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a long story that culminated in 1947 at the hands of a man chosen to do destiny’s work.

Pakistani president’s visit to the mausoleum of the exiled last Moghul emperor in Myanmar was a tribute to this long Pakistani history.

Internet has really converted the world into a global village. This E-world phobia seems to be getting the better of juveniles as well as
the adults. Internet has provided many media in the form of chat messengers which allow people to make acquaintance with strangers from all over the world. Facebook is one of them.

Everything has its advantages and disadvantages hinging on the nature of usage. Facebook was meant to provide people with an

opportunity to hobnob among the social circles worldwide, but these days it's being used for rather abysmal purposes.

People make fake Ids and try to inveigle themselves into other's affections. Some prefer chatting incognito. Instead of being a leisure time activity,
it has become a full day activity.

It's just like an addiction, and nearly 95% of the youth finds it hard to resist its charms. E-amours, hoodwinking, deceiving, and

flirting is what facebook is all about nowadays. Students, instead of concentrating on their studies, are found babbling and nattering on
facebook all day long.

Many people will disagree with me, and some E-world luminaries may even regard me as a raving lunatic, but the reality stands there

intact. Criticizing on facebook is very much tenable, because it's bringing us no good, but harm. Excess of everything is bad.

Facebook and internet were meant to be used for constructive purposes, but to our great loss, they are being utterly misused.

These days the children take influence from media, and as a result their thinking develops and nourishes in accordance to whatever is

being presented on internet. They have no qualms in indulging in acts which run counter to all our norms. Their moral certitudes get
pulverized. This is an alarming situation, and anti-dote to it has become a must.

Albeit, a proper guidance is required so that the
juveniles and the youth may get cognizance of the real and positive aspects of internet. Due to erotic material galore on internet, youth is getting spoiled. Measures should be taken to put a halt to this great threat to our society, and the evil should be nipped in the bud in a jiffy.

We are facing a plethora of problems regarding this E-world, but to control its flow has become an exigency of time. We, the youth, need to take ourselves from the collar, and see that where are we going! We need to figure out a solution by ourselves which may augur well for our future. May ALLAH bless us all, Ameen!

When I first heard of Salman Rushdie I was at university. The Satanic Verses had set off a perfect storm in India and around the world. The book was banned in India following fiery protests by Muslims. Many died in Mumbai when police opened fire on angry protesters. Then came Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa sanctioning the novelist's death, sparking a global debate on free speech and "excessive" Muslim sensitivity.

One day, discussing artistic freedom in one of his lectures, Prof Isaac Sequiera, who headed the English department at Osmania University and taught us American literature, launched a blistering broadside against Khomeini's fatwa and attempts by "some people" to curtail free speech.

Prof Sequiera was one of those brilliant teachers who would draw you to the class day after day. Yet it wasn't easy to stomach his critique of the Muslim response to Rushdie's book, comparing it to the infamous Spanish Inquisition. Was it the same thing?

The church burnt 'heretics' on mere hearsay – and everyone who didn't subscribe to its worldview – at stake. When Galileo suggested that the earth was round, rather than flat as the Church insisted, he was given a chance to reconsider his opinion while he spent the rest of his life behind bars.

Rushdie, on the other hand, has repeatedly abused his creative license, and the divine gift of creativity, to assail a billion people's revered icons. As someone born in a Muslim family, he knew what he was doing and its possible consequences.

No freedom is absolute – not even in the anything-goes West. Blasphemy is a serious crime in many European nations including in Denmark. Every freedom is qualified. Every right comes with responsibility. You can't go around happily waving your big stick and hitting people in the name of freedom. The freedom of your stick ends where my nose begins.

And if you think you have a right to offend, well, others have an equal right to take offense. If Rushdie is free to exercise his creative freedom to attack people's sacred icons, shouldn't his victims too have a right to exercise their freedom of action to deal with him?

Of course, I couldn't say all this to my teacher. Blame it on my moral timidity or the fact that I was painfully shy and the only Muslim in the whole class. That was nearly two decades ago. Today, as this row over Rushdie's participation in the Jaipur literary festival rages on, I am amazed by the fact how little has changed in this whole debate over the past two decades.

The Muslims are upset over the invitation being extended to someone whose name has become a curse word for them. On the other hand, the increasingly shrill voices in the media are crying themselves hoarse as they invoke India's fabled tolerance while ignoring the sentiments of the minority community.

Indeed, more than their concern for the nation's secular ethos, it's their intolerance of all things Muslim that has them batting for Rushdie. They defend his right to visit his 'motherland' oblivious of the fact that the man has repeatedly heaped abuse and scorn on the same motherland and its icons in his books, from Midnight's Children to Shame to The Moor's Last Sigh.

The late premier Indira Gandhi took Rushdie to court over Midnight's Children which describes her as a 'black widow'. He was forced to expunge parts of the book that had Sanjay Gandhi accusing his mother of killing his father, Feroz Gandhi, by neglecting him. Rushdie argued in court that it was only fiction, only to be snubbed by the judge who pointed out that Indira and Sanjay Gandhi were real people.

In the case of Satanic Verses too he hid behind the same fig leaf launching cheap attacks on the noble Prophet, peace be upon him, and his blessed household, outraging his billion plus believers. As a Persian line goes, you could take liberties with God but not with His Prophet. And Rushdie knew it.

The outrage was deliberate – just as most of his books have been deliberately offensive and provocative. He loves to provoke and offend because it sells in the West.

And Islam and its icons and followers have been fair game for centuries. Free speech? Gimme a break! Freedom and free speech have nothing to do with it. Even the so-called liberals and Hindutva fanatics cheering for the author and lecturing Muslims on tolerance know it. They love him because the Muslims loathe him.

That said, the way this whole issue has been handled by the Muslim leadership – if there's such a thing as Muslim leadership – makes one extremely uncomfortable. Except for Asaduddin Owaisi, the young leader of MIM who saved the day once again, not one Muslim talking head could survive the likes of Arnab Goswami of Times Now, India's answer to Fox News.

Once again the bumbling lot did not merely fail to present their case explaining why Rushdie isn't welcome; they managed to make a laughing stock of the whole community.

This week CNN IBN's Sagarika Ghose had two Muslim 'leaders' pitted against two 'liberals' on the panel. One gentleman, an eminent lawyer associated with the Babri Masjid case, had one hand on his earpiece the whole time as he struggled to make sense of the brutal attacks by the anchor and her guests.

And studio guests and audience couldn't understand half the things the other gentleman, a former Maharashtra MLA, kept muttering in a chaotic mix of Urdu and English talking of an 'international conspiracy' against Muslims. With friends like these, who needs enemies?

Do these guys really represent and speak for a 200-million strong, diverse community? More important, why do we get repeatedly bogged down in the same old, festering issues when we have far more serious challenges and problems staring us in the face?

As much as I am repelled by the 'satanic' Rushdie, I can't help being intrigued by the question that has been raised by others too – why now? Rushdie has apparently been quietly and frequently visiting India over the past few years. Does it have something to do with the assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, next month as some suggest?

Given the propensity of political parties to raise such issues to excite the easily excitable Muslim public opinion so they could soothe it later, the possibility cannot be dismissed.

Of course, Rushdie will remain unwelcome as long as he remains unrepentant. And by protesting against his abuse, Muslims are only exercising their democratic rights and the suggestion that they're undermining India's future is ridiculous.

We cannot however allow characters like Rushdie and controversies like these to define us and our agenda forever. We must choose our battles wisely. For we have far bigger wars ahead of us.

From our political and economic dispossession to our situation in education and employment sectors, the level of our deprivation is simply overwhelming. A TV documentary this week, again on CNN IBN, on the legendary weavers of Benares, literally fighting for survival with their emaciated, starving children, should be a must-watch for every Muslim.

It's the same story with the once famous artisan communities in UP, from Aligarh to Moradabad to Bareilly and Kanpur, and the general state of affairs across the Gangetic belt. Indeed, the condition of Muslims in north India, once the power centre, is today worst in the country.

When will Muslim leaders and those who claim to champion the community take up these real issues? When will we stop expending all our time and energy on fighting phantoms and chasing chimeras?

حسین حقانی اس بات کی شدت سے نفی کرتے ہیں۔ ایک اہم گواہ کو دور رکھنے کے لئے دھمکیاں دی جارہی ہیں، اور امریکا صدر آصف علی زرداری کی نا اہل حکومت کو بچانے کے لئے کوششوں میں مصروف ہے۔

افسوس ہے کہ پاکستانی اپنے ملک کے ساتھ غدر کرنے میں نئی داستانیں رقم کررہے ہیں جو غداری کی تاریخ میں بھی شاید انوکھی ہوں۔ یہ کارنامے پاکستانی عوام کے نھیں ہیں، جو پاکستان پرست محب وطن ہیں۔ یہ کارنامے پاکستان کا بکا ہوا حکمران طبقہ سرانجام دے رہا ہے۔

ایک منتخب حکومت کے لئے اس سے بڑھ کر کوئی غداری نھیں ہوسکتی کہ وہ خفیہ طور پر ایک غیر ملک کے ساتھ ملکر اپنے ہی ملک کی فوجی قیادت کا سر کاٹنے کی سازش کرے، قوم کے اسٹریٹیجک ہتھیاروں کا سودا کرے، اور رضا کارانہ طور پر ملک کے اہم سٹریٹجک مفادات پر ہتھیار ڈال دے۔

میمو کیس میں پاکستانی وفاقی حکومت ان تینوں کاموں میں ملوث پائی گئی ہے۔

اور کوئی شک نہیں کہ پاکستانی صدر کے ہم راز اور ساتھی، جناب حسین حقانی، اس سازش میں ملوث ہیں۔

لیکن حقانی صاحب اکیلے نھیں ہیں۔ ان کے امریکی شراکت داروں کے علاوہ پاکستانی شراکت داروں کی ایک فہرست بھی موجود ہے۔

یہ پاکستان دشمن میمو ایک مکمل پالیسی ہے۔ پاکستان کو بغیر گولی چلائے ہتیار ڈالنے کا یہ بھترین نسخہ ہے۔ اور یہ نسخہ اکیلے حسین حقانی کا تیار کردہ نھیں ہے۔ اس میں کچھ ریٹائرڈ فوجی اور سویلین افراد شامل ہیں جو ماضی میں سویلین منصبوں پر فائز رہیں ہیں۔ یہ کام ان طاقتور پاکستانیوں نے صرف ایک طاقتور غیر ملکی حکومت، ریاست ہائے متحدہ امریکہ، اور اس کی فوج اور انٹیلی جنس کی خدمت میں کیا۔

۴۔ میمو کے مصنفین نے آئی ایس آئی پر اسلام آباد میں سی آئی اے کے اسٹیشن چیف کا نام فاش کرنے کا الزام لگایا ہے۔

۵۔ میمو کے مصنفین نے پاکستان پر القاعدہ دھشت گرد تنظیم کا گڑہ ہونے کا الزام لگایا ہے جو سراسر غلط ہے۔

۶۔ میمو کے مصنفین نے ' 1971لمحے' کے اصطلاح کا استعمال کیا اور امریکی حکومت کو مشورہ دیا کہ یہ جملہ استعمال کرکے پاکستانی فوج کو بلیک میل کا جائے۔ اس کا مطلب تھا پاکستانی فوج کو ملک توڑنے کی دھمکی دینا اگر فوج نے سی آئی اے ویزوں کے مسئلے پر زرداری حکومت اور حسین حقانی سے پوچہ گچہ کی۔

۷۔ میمو کے مصنفین نے امریکا سے پاکستان کی فوجی قیادت کو تبدیل کرنے کا وعدہ کیا [پیرا تین]

اس میمو یا یادداشت کا آخری فقرہ انتھائی اھمیت کا حامل ہے۔ اسے پڑھنے سے پتہ چلتا ہے کہ پاکستان کے خلاف یہ سازش کتنی آگے نکل چکی ہے۔ اس فقرے سے یہ معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ سابق فوجی اور سویلین پاکستانیوں کی ایک پوری ٹیم نے اس میمو کو لکھنے میں حصہ لیا۔ ان پاکستانیوں کے نام میمو میں موجود نھیں ہیں، لیکن یہ واضح طور پر لکھا ہوا ہے کہ انکے نام زبانی طور پر ایڈمرل مائیک مولن کو بتادیئے گئے ہیں، جو کہ اس وقت کے امریکی چیئرمین جوائنٹ چیفس تھے۔

The Haqqani Memo: A New Height For Treason In Pakistan

A new pro-US team of ex-military and civilian Pakistanis was ready to take over. Who are they?

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Between the denials of Husain Haqqani, threats to a key witness to stay away from testimony, and American efforts to save the incompetent government of President Asif Ali Zardari, the fact remains that ‘The Memo’ is a new height for treason in Pakistan.

There can be no higher treason for a serving elected government than to secretly invite a foreign country to decapitate the country’s military leadership, compromise the nation’s strategic weapons arsenal, and voluntarily surrender policy on vital strategic interests.

The Memo did all three. And there is little doubt that Mr. Haqqani, a confidante to President of Pakistan, was involved in this conspiracy.

There is also little doubt he was not alone. Apart from his American partners, a list of Pakistani partners exists. This potentially includes individuals, serving and retired, inside and outside government, who helped in writing The Memo, whose copy was first revealed by a blog on the American Foreign Policy magazine’s website.

Pakistani citizens, conscientious politicians (if any), and the country’s national security managers, cannot take lightly this action against Pakistan by a group of powerful Pakistanis whose only interest was to serve a powerful foreign government, the United States, and its military and intelligence.

One day maybe The Memo would be taught in schools for how high treason looks like in action.

But for now, the following paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of The Memo serves as a reminder to Pakistanis why cases of treason should never be brushed under the carpet.

TREASON

1. The writer(s) of The Memo sought to create national division in Pakistan by dividing the government between ‘civilians’ and ‘military’. This deliberate division was meant to incite warfare among Pakistanis, and mislead foreign governments. The rift sought to weaken Pakistan when a war rages on our borders. [Paragraph One of The Memo]

2. The writer(s) of The Memo attempted to create a false impression of a military coup where none existed. [Paragraph One + Two]

3. The writer(s) of The Memo conspired against Pakistan Armed Forces using a misleading phrase, i.e. ‘correcting civil-military relations’. Any such relations are an internal Pakistani matter. It can never justify inviting foreign intervention as the Haqqani Memo does.

4. The writer(s) of The Memo accuse ISI of outing the name of CIA station chief in Islamabad, clearly adopting the position of US government.

5. The writer(s) of The Memo accuse Pakistan of being home to al-Qaeda. [Paragraph Two.]

6. The writer(s) of The Memo blackmail Pakistan using the term ‘1971 moment’. They propose to US government to threaten Pakistan of breakup [like 1971 after an unprovoked Indian invasion] if the Zardari government is held accountable for allowing illegal CIA penetration into the country. [Paragraph Three.]

7. Bluntly ‘requests direct intervention’ by another country in Pakistan. [Para Three]

8. Promises to replace Pakistan’s military leadership with “trusted advisers that include ex-military and civilian leaders favorably viewed by Washington.” [Para Three.]

9. Promises that the new pro-US Pakistani national security team-in-waiting consists of Pakistanis “each of whom have long and historical ties” to US military and intelligence. [Para Three.]

10. Promises that the name of the new pro-US team to run Pakistan’s military and intelligence are provided verbally through the person delivering The Memo. [Para Three.]

11. Promises six tangible actions in Islamabad in favor of US interests:

11.1 To put Pakistan on trial for “harboring” Al-Qaeda terror chief OBL, and constitute a Pakistani panel for the investigation where US government can screen and nominate members. [Bullet One]

11.2 Bullet Two in The Memo affirms official Pakistani government, military and intelligence complicity in harboring OBL.

11.3 Bullet Three confirms -- without evidence -- that Al-Qaeda terror group leaders are harbored by Pakistan and will be handed over to US once the new pro-US military and civilian Pakistani national security team is in charge. Also, an offer is extended to allow US military and intelligence to conduct operations on Pakistani soil.

11.4 Bullet Three confirms that these offers have been discussed and approved at the highest levels of the Zardari-Gilani government.

11.5 Promises Washington to implement “an acceptable framework … for Pakistan’s nuclear program.” Any interpretation of this sentence would mean some form of American supervision of Pakistan’s nuclear program. The writer(s) of The Memo suggest that currently Pakistani nuclear weapons are not secure. [Bullet Four]

11.6 Promises to eliminate Section S of ISI that the writer(s) of The Memo claim maintains links to Afghan Taliban. This directly infringes on Pakistan’s legitimate right to deal with players in the region as suited to Pakistani interests. The Haqqani Memo assumes here that Pakistan should follow policy guidelines coming from Washington. [Bullet Five]

11.7 Promises to force Pakistan to submit to the demands of Indian government, suggests Pakistani guilt in 2008 Mumbai attacks, and promises to hand over anyone to India if New Delhi demands. [Bullet Six]

Paragraph Eleven: Promises US government that Zardari government’s interests are the same as Washington’s in aligning Pakistan with India “AND” Afghanistan [capital letters used by the writer(s) of The Memo].

The last line in The Memo reveals the extent of the conspiracy from the Pakistani side. It shows that an entire pro-US team of ex-military and civilian Pakistanis participated in writing this memo. The names of these Pakistanis were verbally conveyed to Admiral Mike Mullen, then US Chairman Joint Chiefs.

Let the letter be written, Mr President, for your party which was founded for the people on a social welfare platform. Let it be, so that this People's Party can survive beyond the histrionics of the Zardari legacy.

Write it because the country's liberal agenda – a crucially required left-of-centre school of thought – depends critically on the integrity of your party's raison d'etre of roti-kapra-makaan.

There is a difference, Sir, between being martyred and playing victim. Sure, Sir: Your party has bled before, and can even take murder. But do not transfuse its blood for your own political dialysis. Do not simulate injury, Sir. Display a long-term view as your party's leader.

The PPP will only thank you for your selfless perspective, which would be the real sacrifice that it needs to survive against rising tsunami of Banni Gala, the incumbent takht of Lahore, and even the garrisoned fortress of Chaklala.

Let it be written – Mr President – for your friend and lawyer, Aitzaz Ahsan, who will lose his political credibility, if not his legal fees, by the time all of this is over. You've already driven away most of the old guard of the PPP.

Aitzaz is a staunch pillar of the Piplis; a vanguard of your Jiyalas; and a hero of the lawyers' movement. He is an international brand of repute that you can use anytime. Deploy him for larger conflicts that are winnable. Do not debase him in the public eye, at the twilight of his career, by putting him in a position where his credentials are permanently damaged. Fight the long war, Mr President.

By burning your Bishop now, you will lose the clergy – this judiciary – in the coming years. In this unfair land, you and successors will need the courts to dispense justice again and again. Look beyond the corner with Aitzaz and the judges. Don't get your messenger killed, Sir.

Let the letter be written, Mr President. You've seen what your inflexibility has done to your prime minister. You've witnessed how your politicking has disabled this administration's performance and affected its governance.

If you're so disconnected from the hellish, unread, backbreaking, murderous, dark and cold reality that is everyday life in Pakistan's economy, then look at the opinion polls to assess the damage.

Peruse the international press, if not the local one, to count your losses. Do remember, Sir, that you had an open playing field when your administration was elected in 2008.

Back then, your prime minister was under your thumb, and parliament and public opinion were under his. All that your combine had to do was govern, and govern well, to strengthen your coalition and guarantee your incumbency.

You could have played a god, and all the PM had to do was deliver your message and wrath. But you chose to play monster – pulverising national and even your party's sentiment – and your PM lost a captive audience.

Today, Gilani risks official disqualification, and you stand a verdict away from becoming yet another president who saw off an elected premier, pawning him off for power; only this time, he would be your man, not your enemy. That would be a strange legacy, Sir. Imagine what it will do to the confidence of your rank and file if you were ever to vie power again.

Let the letter be written, Mr President. If not for your party, your friends or your pawns, then for your successor. For Assefa, so that she may be able to face the music when it plays again, for it shall blare on. Leave her a world where she doesn't have to sign her life away to deals or settle for secret arrangements to assume power.

Her inheritance shouldn't just be her mother's murder or her father's disrepute. It should be her party leader's exemplary sacrifice of doing the right thing – not necessarily the most immediately, and politically, profitable thing.

Let it be written, Sir, so she will be able to hold her head up high one day and say her father defied everyone except the law of this land. Don't put her in a position where her detractors taunt her that she is the legate of a man who hid behind immunity, who sacrificed the stability of the system just to cling to office and manoeuvre electoral victories: a man who limped and staggered past the post. Let Assefa make history, Sir, and not be judged by it.

Surely, she will gain more from your selflessness, if you choose to display it, for she will always have less to answer for as the daughter and successor of a man humbled by the laws of political gravity, if not a president empowered by the spin and wizardry of legal druids.

Let the letter be written, Mr President. Recall that day in 1988 when your departed wife, the Mohtarma, rolled back into power, riding the wave of anger over the injustice done to her father and her people. Recollect the moment of purity and victory when she was elected to the highest office in the land for the first time. Remember the redemption and innocence of the 1988 elections, despite the odds being stacked against her.

The NRO is not about her, Mr President. She has already proven herself beyond the call of duty. Pakistan will always love and respect her – with her faults and fallibilities as well her strengths and leadership.

No, Sir: The NRO is your trial, a test not just of your office and person, but also your courage and conscience. Rest assured, Mr President: Nobody wants to dance on Benazir's grave. But this country is assessing you, Sir, and it has every right to do so. Today, this land has a soul that is multi-coloured and eclectic, not just khaki and helmeted.

This Pakistan has many hues of hope – a rainbow coalition of aspirations – and though far from perfectly justified, balanced or even explicable, our thirst for accountability is so immediate and so critical that you will destroy your wife's legacy, your children's future, your successors' confidence, your friends' prospects and your party's promise, if you fight this existentialist wave of sought justice through contrived political manoeuvrings.

So let it be written, Mr President. For your martyr of democracy, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. For Assefa Bhutto Zardari. For Yousuf Raza Gilani, and Aitzaz Ahsan, and the Pakistan People's Party. But look above them all, Sir. Let it be written for setting a new precedent. For raising the bar. For breaching mediocrity. After all, Sir, this is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and our hapless state today asks for nothing from her president – only that he behaves presidential.

Six Missing students Return to Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: The drop scene of the abduction of six students of Rawalpindi came when police recovered the students from Peshawar and brought back to the city.

According to the details, the students would be presented in the court on Tuesday.

According to the police, two brother and sister among six students of a private school went missing on return from Murree. The students made mock calls to their parents and demanded ransom for their recovery.

Peshawar police raided a hotel, recovering all the students. They were taken to Hast Nagri police station and later brought back to Rawalpindi.

Imagine this: you are a young Pakistani woman walking in a Karachi park with a young man. He could be your brother, cousin, university friend, fiance, or husband. You are wearing a full burqa, and your companion is walking beside you, carrying on a conversation. You are a middle to lower-middle-class girl, with a lot of restrictions on your life, and this time in this public space, where you are modestly dressed and doing no harm, give you a bit of respite in a life that carries a lot of expectations about how you conduct yourself and what weight that places on your family's respectability.

Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a group of fifteen upper-class women descend upon you. One of them has a microphone which she thrusts into your companion's face, and there is a camera crew behind her, filming every moment. She claims to be doing a survey on mobile phone crime, but the questions she poses become more and more intrusive. "Are you college students? Yes? Then why aren't you in class? It's morning time." The woman with the microphone assures you the camera is not recording, but the accusations become more pointed. "Are you on a date? Are you married? Where's your nikahnama?"

You become afraid, because you know that if anyone from your family sees this spectacle, there will be no mercy for you. They will believe that you are an immoral girl: maybe you'll be taken out of college. Maybe you'll be beaten. Married off to someone you don't know as a way of forcing you to behave. If you're very unlucky, you might even be killed as a way of avenging the family honour. You hide behind your companion, but the microphone is thrust in your face. You scream out that you don't want to be harassed like this, that you don't want to answer any questions. Finally, you flee, while the group of women and camera crew chase after you, screaming "Bhago bhago bhago!" They are laughing and giggling hysterically, because to them, this is a fun game, while you are crying with fear and anxiety.

And then, the entire clip is shown on a morning breakfast show on a local television channel.

The television anchor who conceived of this segment for her television show thought she was doing a great service to society. "We need to make this park safe for families!" is her justification as the segment begins. But safety and families are not the words that come to mind when watching this clip. Instead, witch-hunt is one of them. Zia is another. Hudood Ordinance is a third. And privacy, hypocrisy, and ethics soon follow.

This clip brings to mind the tales of countless couples harassed by the police to prove they're married in order to extort money out of them. It makes one wonder what drives a group of educated, affluent women to embarrass a young couple from a lower socioeconomic class, harass them to the point of hysteria, and then drive them out from a public space which is paid for by government taxes which that same socioeconomic class is more likely to pay than the class the affluent women come from. It makes one wonder whether Pakistanis have the right to privacy, and question the need to browbeat young adults about their presence in a public park, engaged in nothing more harmful than a walk on a beautiful winter's day. It makes one wonder about how Talibanisation has invaded our mindset, when we can see something obscene in a normal act which people engage in all over the world.

Time and again the ethics of our media have been called into question, as channels embrace sensationalism in order to achieve the highest ratings. The television channel in question will find themselves open to legal action by victims of their harassment who are being portrayed on television without their consent. Airing this segment also appeals to the worst instincts in our hypocritical society by passing moral judgment in the name of family values upon two innocent people, which makes for some of the most irresponsible broadcast journalism found in Pakistan today. At the very least, the channel and the anchorperson owe an apology, if not compensation, to those two individuals who had hurt nobody on that day when they were ambushed and harassed by the television anchor and her Moral Aunty Brigade. The irony is that she describes herself on her Facebook page as "very fair and honest in her dealings". I think that girl in the niqab, crying in the park, and her blameless friend, as well as any sane person with a conscience and a respect for other people's privacy, would beg to differ.
