NEW Mercedes SL

All-new SLs seem to come around as often as Halley’s Comet, but here are the first Stuttgart-sanctioned shots of Mercedes’ sixth generation premium roadster – the 2012 Mercedes SL. If it looks familiar, that’s because it’s already had more lenses pointed at its disguised bodywork than Pippa Middleton’s derrière – and CAR’s own renderings earlier this year weren’t far wide of the mark.

So what’s the big news with the new 2012 Mercedes SL then?
It’s all new. The current version of Mercedes’ flagship coupe-cabriolet – the R230 – was launched in 2002 and has undergone a couple of facelifts, each of which notched up the aggression a touch. Stylistically, the new SL moves further in that direction – but big changes under the skin help it shed significant bulk. As a result, Mercedes claims the new model (codenamed R231) is true to its ‘sport lightweight’ SL moniker, being up to 140kg lighter than its portly predecessor, which weighed up to 1970kg depending on spec. Weight-loss has been achieved through the extensive use of aluminium in the body-shell – steel only being used for rollover protection in the A-pillars.

Current Mercedes design language is evident at the business end, the wide-mouthed grille and angular LED headlamps lending it a super-sized SLK-look. It’s a visage that stays true to the traditional SL cocktail of bold elegance, being long-of-bonnet, with an unapologetically large three-pointed star harking back to the ‘Bobby Ewing’ R107 SL of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Sculpted flanks and SLS-aping vents with chromed fins lend muscularity to the side view, whilst the rear is dominated by oversized CLS-alike wrap-around tail lights extending into the hind quarters. There’s function in the form too – Mercedes claims the new SL is the most aerodynamic car in its sector, helping it set new standards for refinement and noise suppression, roof up or down.

An abundance of space and comfort should satisfy the SL’s core demographic – it’s longer and wider than its predecessor by 50mm and 57mm respectively, resulting in class-leading cabin room according to Mercedes. Inside, the SL’s dashboard architecture doffs its cap to both SLK and SLS, with chromed air vents and switchgear similar to its sporting stablemates.

What’s under the bonnet of the new SL?
It’s a case of more from less with the SL500. The boot badge still lies, but in the opposite direction this time – it’s a 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 as opposed to the current 5.5 unit. Power has been hiked to 429bhp, whilst it drinks 22% less fuel, and hits 62 mph in a claimed 4.6 seconds. That figure trumps the current SL500 by a healthy 0.8 seconds and matches the original SL55 AMG in a straight-line drag.

There’s also an SL350 to mark the entry point into SL ownership, powered by a 302bhp 3.5-litre V6 that can achieve north of 40mpg and sprint to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. Standard-fit start-stop technology and a seven-speed automatic, optimised for economy, helps the SL’s environmental halo glow.

‘Semi-active’ damping and steel springs are standard-fit on the SL350, whilst Merc’s self-levelling hydraulic dampers – dubbed Active Body Control – feature on the options list.

It’s a new Mercedes – so is it loaded with new tech?

Yes, it’s business as usual from the prolific innovator that is Mercedes, so the new SL packs enough toys to keep the silver-haired brigade busy thumbing its handbook for a while.

Headlining the gizmo-count is Magic Vision Control, a clever wash-wipe system integrated into the wipers, which ensures the driver’s vision can never be obscured by washer fluid on the windscreen. It also allows drivers to spray the windscreen roof-down without wetting the bonce.

Also new is Frontbass, which utilises the natural bass enclosure created by the aluminium cavity forward of the footwell, to produce ‘concert-hall’ sound quality and negate the requirement for hefty speaker enclosures in the doors. There’s also a hands-free boot-lid opening function – wave a nine iron under the rear bumper and it opens, ending the need for hand-to-bodywork contact at the luggage end.

Magic Sky Control – the panoramic glass roof already seen on the smaller SLK, also makes an appearance and switches from transparent to darkened glass at the touch of a button.

When can we get our hands on a new SL?

The new V8 engine will be available in two models, the Continental GT and the Continental GTC. New Bentley V8 engine delivers maximum power of 500bhp (507PS/373Kw) at 6000 rev/min and an extraordinary peak torque of 660Nm (487 lb ft) which is available across virtually the entire rev range from 1700 to 5000 rev/min, providing exhilarating performance and effortless power delivery in the Bentley tradition. Combined with a new close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission, this translates into a sub-5 second acceleration time for the 0-60 mph (0-100km/h) sprint and a top speed of over 180mph (290km/h).

Both models are specified with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard with an optional 21-inch six-spoke design which is available in dramatic Diamond Black (exclusive to the Continental V8) or Diamond Silver finishes.

Inside the cabin, an Eliade cloth headlining, new contemporary Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus veneers, optional two-tone leather colour split and short centre console continue the fresh, sporting design theme.

The two new Continental models will be offered beneath the flagship 6.0 litre,12-cylinder engined Continental GT and GTC, which continue to excite customers with a combination of silken refinement and the ultimate power of the twin-turbocharged W12 Continental engine that, in its most potent form, delivers an astonishing 631bhp (640PS).

NEW RELEASE: 2012 BMW 650i Convertible

The BMW 650i Convertible comes with a 4.4-liter V-8 engine which develops a maximum 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, and makes peak torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm (preliminary). This unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it an energetic delight for the enthusiast driver.

Instantaneous power and torque are the stand-out features of the V-8 engine available of the new BMW 650i Convertible. The engine combines sporting character with outstanding smoothness, linear power delivery, and exceptional efficiency. The engine can be paired with either BMW’s new 8-speed Sport Automatic gearbox or BMW’s traditional 6-speed manual transmission, quite popular with North American enthusiasts.

The new BMW 650i Convertible completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with the manual transmission (4.9 seconds with the 8-speed automatic), and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. This engine also boasts extraordinary efficiency for a model in its output class. EPA figures will be available closer to the on-sale date in 2011.

The vehicle body of the new Mercedes CLS spoils all occupants with its generous interior measurements: in particular, the four-door coupé offers more elbow room (8/21 millimetres at the front/back) and more shoulder room (21/13 millimetres) than its predecessor. The starting point for this extra space was the vehicle body, which is 29 millimetres longer, 13 millimetres higher and 8 millimetres wider than its predecessor. The wheelbase has increased too, by 20 millimetres to 2874 millimetres.

Individuality is written large in the new Mercedes-Benz CLS. The model range for the four-door Coupé is correspondingly extensive – it will be at first be available with rear-wheel drive and then, from September 2011 onwards, for the first time as a 4MATIC with all-wheel drive. As regards the drive system, customers will at first have a choice between four petrol and diesel engines, with four, six and eight cylinders and an output range of between 150 kW (204 hp) and 300 kW (408 hp), or 2143 to 4633 cc displacement.

A customer opting for the Exterior Sports package will get a Mercedes CLS with visible, chromed tailpipes. The Sport CLS also has a lowered suspension with sports tuning, alloy wheels in size 18 or 19 (and, optionally, in anthracite) and a trim element in black on the rear bumper.

The AMG Sports package comprises a multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather in the 3-spoke design, with flattened bottom section, aluminium pedals, AMG bumpers to the front (with single-louvred grille) and rear, AMG alloy wheels in size 18 or 19, AMG floor mats, visible tailpipes, and in the interior, in combination with black leather seats, light-coloured felled seams on the seats, headrests and armrests. With the AMG Sports package, the automatic transmission has a third shift programme – M – which allows the gear to be selected manually using the paddles on the steering wheel. In addition to this, the adaptive suspension is more sportily tuned.

The Exclusive package combines seats in fine semi-aniline leather with nappa leather for the instrument panel, centre console and parts of the door trim. The roof lining is made of alcantara. The Exclusive package, which also includes ambient lighting, is available with all the interior colours and trim elements.

The CLS “Edition 1″ will be available for a limited period of one year following market launch. The distinguishing features of this special model are the SHAPE matt paint finish in manganite grey; the leather upholstery in designo corteccia tundra brown pearl which has a metallic shimmer to it; floormats with Edition 1 lettering; a black roof liner; and aluminium pedals. For the interior trim elements in the Edition 1 there is a choice between satin-finish light brown poplar, black piano lacquer or AMG carbon fibre.

195 kW (265 hp) and 620 Nm of torque: the excellent diesel engine in the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is now even more powerful and boasts a correspondingly superior performance. The Coupé accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 250 km/h. And despite the increase in output of 30 kW and the additional tractive power of 80 Nm, the V6 consumes a fifth less fuel than previously, at 6.0 litres per 100 km.

The four- and six-cylinder variants of the CLS feature 17-inch wheels fitted with 245/45 R 17 tyres as standard. The CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY is factory-fitted with 18-inch wheels and tyres in size 255/40 R 18 – this combination is available as an option for four- and six-cylinder models.

Alternatively, 18-inch wheels fitted with tyres in size 255/40 R 18 at the front and 285/35 R 18 at the rear are available for all models. The 19-inch wheels which are available for the first time lend the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class an even sportier appearance. These wheels are fitted with tyres in size 255/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear.

• It has an aluminium bonnet and roof, plastic front wings and a composite tailgate to keep weight down. The lightest version comes in at less than 1600kg.

• It is the first SUV or crossover with magnetic ride. Iron filings in the shock absorber fluid change their positioning when an electrical current is applied or removed to make the suspension stiffer or softer.

• It has the best take-off, departure and ramp angles of any compact 4x4 or crossover, which means it can tackle steeper gradients and humps.

• Engineers spent 13,000 hours making every shutline (the necessary gap between two adjacent body panels or interior trim panels) as tight as possible in the interests of refinement and quality.

• The five-door version has a higher roofline and longer windscreen to make it more spacious in the back than its three-door sibling.

• The Evoque is based on the Land Rover Freelander platform, but it has totally new front- and rear suspension. There is only one common chassis component between the two cars.

• The Evoque has more ground clearance than a Freelander and can drive through water that's up to 500mm deep.

• An updated version of Land Rover's Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release Control is said to make driving down steep inclines smoother and prevent the car from rolling backwards at more than 5mph.

• Durability testing took place in 15 countries and included China for the first time. Russian winters and Tokyo traffic were also included in the test schedule.

• The 2.0-litre petrol engine develops 3.5% more power (237bhp) and 7% more torque (251lb ft) than the 3.2-litre six-cylinder unit in the Freelander, but it's 8% more economical.

• The 2.2-litre diesel will be available with 188bhp or 148bhp. The lesser-powered version will be reserved for the two-wheel-drive model to help trim CO2 emissions to below 130g/km.

• An eight-inch dual-view screen will allow the driver to use the sat-nav while the front passenger watches the TV or a DVD. Eight-inch rear screens mounted in the backs of the front headrests will also be available.

• The range of personalisation options means there are 380,000 combinations available to buyers.

• The Evoque was developed with what Land Rover calls 'life-cycle design' to take into account its effect on the environment at all stages of production, use and scrapping. The company claims this has reduced the car's global warming potential by 8.1%, saving 3.6 tonnes of CO2 over 125,000 miles.

• There is 16kg of recycled plastic in every Evoque, which is used for such things as wheelarch liners and engine covers. The headliner is made from 100% recycled polyester. Altogether, there are 21kg of natural and renewable materials in the car.

• Land Rover thought about giving the Evoque the familiar Range Rover split tailgate, but rejected the idea because that would have necessitated the use of heavier materials.

• For winter mornings you will be able to programme the heater to come on before you get in the car to take the chill out of the cabin – and for up to seven days in advance.

• A self-park system steers the car into gaps only 1.2 times the car's length. All the driver has to do is work the accelerator and brake.

• The Evoque is the first Land Rover with electronic power steering. This cuts fuel consumption by 2%.

• A premium Meridian stereo with 17 speakers will be among the options available.

The new Volkswagen Beetle is 1,808 mm wide (84 mm wider), 1,486 mm tall (12 mm lower) and 4,278 mm long (152 mm longer). This has resulted in entirely new proportions. The gain in length meant that the roof could be extended further, the front windscreen could be shifted back, and the rear section could follow the contour of the original Beetle. The new focal point is the C-pillar. In parallel, the development team increased the car’s track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the VW Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.

In the USA, the VW Beetle will be offered as a turbodiesel for the first time. The Beetle 2.0 TDI (103 kW / 140 PS) meets all USA emission limits and attains 40 mpg fuel economy in the Highway cycle, 29 mpg in City driving, and 33 mpg combined. Incidentally, the Volkswagen not only has excellent fuel economy values in the version with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but also – and this is a technical debut in the Beetle as well – with the optional 6-speed dual clutch transmission.

Fuel economy values were also improved in the 2.5-litre five cylinder petrol engine, which was already a success in the previous model. The manually shifted VW Beetle attains 22 mpg (City), 31 mpg (Highway) and 25 mpg (combined). Its counterpart with a 6-speed automatic comes in at 22 mpg (City), 29 mpg (Highway) and 25 mpg (combined) – this represents an increase of up to 10 percent in fuel economy.

In markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe and New Zealand, the new Volkswagen Beetle will be offered exclusively with charged engines. All engine versions – all of them with four cylinders – are being used for the first time in this model series. The car exhibits significantly reduced fuel consumption and emission values compared to the previous model thanks to the switch to turbo-petrol (TSI) and common rail turbodiesel direct injection engines (TDI). The three charged petrol engines of the Beetle output 77 kW / 105 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. The two diesel engines develop 77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS (TDI engines are not offered in China). All five engines may be combined with a dual clutch transmission as an option.

The new Volkswagen will be available worldwide in the three equipment lines “Beetle”, “Design” and “Sport”. Each of these versions has a very unique character.

The Range Rover Evoque will be offered in both 5-door and Coupé forms and will go on-sale from September 2011. A smooth and refined powertrain line-up is available with a choice of state-of-the-art diesel or petrol engines.

The updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel has 150PS or 190PS derivatives. The 2WD (on-sale early 2012) Coupé version combined with the 150 PS 2.2-litre engine is set to achieve sub 130g/km CO2*.

The new 240PS 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable valve timing for exceptional driveability and fuel-efficiency and delivers 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds*.

In place of a traditional trim hierarchy, customers can choose from three distinct design themes, which include many features as standard. A wide range of personalisation opportunities are also available, allowing customers to fully tailor the Evoque to individual tastes and requirements.

Options available include 12 exterior colours, three contrasting roof treatments, seven alloy wheel designs, 16 contrasting interiors and a full sized, fixed, panoramic glass roof. A new online configurator goes live today, making it simple for customers to create their perfect Range Rover Evoque.

NEW CAR - 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK350

The first eye-catching feature is an upright radiator grille that bears the new Mercedes-Benz brand look. The grille emphasizes the long and well-proportioned hood, and with its light-catching contours it already hints at the roadster’s dramatic qualities. The wide radiator grille bears the Mercedes-Benz star in a prominent central position and displays a powerfully contoured chromed fin at the front.

The clearly defined headlamps complete the look of the new SLK’s face and resemble that of the legendary 190SL from the 1950s, which is regarded by many as being the original “SLK”. However, the designers did not just focus on the past; with the new SLK’s front end they also intentionally created a close visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “gullwing” and the new CLS-Class.

At the rear, the eye is drawn to the integrated spoiler lip and wide tail light clusters. For the first time, the tail lights with their pronounced horizontal design are in all-LED technology. UK Pricing and Spec's - Range Rover Evoque

The most hotly anticipated new car of 2011... That would be the all-new ‘baby’ Range Rover, the Evoque.
Land Rover has announced trim levels, powertrain options and prices on a car which will undoubtedly become the company’s biggest seller.

The Evoque initially comes with a choice of three engines, two body styles, and three design themes, with prices starting from £27,955 for the entry-level eD4 Pure 5-door 6-speed manual 2WD model. The 4WD equivalent is priced at £28,705. While the top-of-the-range Si4 6 Speed automatic Dynamic coupé with LUX pack is available for £44,320.

Available in both 5-door and coupe (3-door) body styles the car will officially go on-sale from September, with the the 2WD coupe version on-sale from early 2012.

The engine, transmission, drive and design theme combinations available are as follows:

Both the TD4 and SD4 are derivatives of the same updated 2.2-litre turbodiesel, while the forthcoming eD4 engine is the most economical variant available on the Evoque with CO2 emissions expected to be below 130g/km. At the other end of the scale, the powerful Si4 petrol unit can fire the car from 0-60mph in just 7.1 seconds.

There are three base trim levels announced for the Evoque – Pure, Prestige, and Dynamic. However, Land Rover has done away with the usual hierarchy found on trim levels by offering motorists the option of picking a trim level have best suits their tastes. For buyers after a cool and contemporary car then Pure is the trim level for them, while Prestige is geared towards the luxury more familiar ‘Range Rover’ interior. Finally, Dynamic brings a sportier character to the Evoque.

Pure

On the outside it is distinguished by the high-gloss black detailing across the tailgate and along the waistline, with a dark 'Atlas' finish to the grille and eye-catching side fender blades and, on the Coupé, bonnet louvres. As standard, Pure models come with 18-inch Sparkle Silver alloy wheels.
Inside, the seats are finished in grain leather, and satin brushed aluminium is used for the centre console trim. Highlights of the standard equipment on board include heated front seats, an 8-inch high-resolution touch screen display, climate control air conditioning, an 11-speaker Meridian audio system with subwoofer, push-button start, Bluetooth for mobile phone connection and audio streaming, twin USB ports, which support portable audio connectivity and cruise control.
The handling and safety systems include Hill Launch Assist, rear parking sensors and, on 4WD versions, Terrain Response to set up the vehicle for different off-road environments, and Hill Descent Control.

Prestige

Highlights of the Prestige range include bright 'Atlas' detailing, 19” Diamond Turned alloy wheels, fine Oxford full leather interior available in a selection of warm and inviting colour schemes with real wood finishers, tailored carpet mats and chrome tread plates. Metallic paint is also provided as standard and Prestige models benefit from xenon headlamps with signature LED lighting and front fog lamps.

Similarly, the equipment specification delivers the highest quality features, with an HDD satellite navigation system with dynamic route guidance and voice control option. It also displays 4WD performance information and provides an audio server for storing uncompressed digital music files. There is also a rear camera, front parking sensors and auto headlamps and windscreen wipers.

Dynamic

The Dynamic Evoque can be distinguished from others with the addition of deeper body colour sills and bumpers, black-finished mirrors and 20” Sparkle Silver alloys.

Inside the cabin detailed touches reinforce the theme with aluminium pedal covers, a textured metal finish to the centre console and perforated leather around the steering wheel and (manual) gearshift. Land Rover has also confirmed that a number of bold colour schemes will be made available on the Dynamic theme.

Dynamic models also come with Adaptive Dynamics featuring MagnaRide as standard for and an even sharper ride and handling. Adaptive Dynamics is also available as an option for Prestige SD4 models at a cost of £1150.

Over and above the trim levels, the Evoque is a available with two optional packs, the TECH pack for Pure and the LUX pack for both the Prestige and Dynamic models.

Pure with TECH Pack

Many of the key technology features available in the range have been brought together in a TECH Pack to enhance the Pure theme even further. The pack includes the following additional features:

Tesco's to start Selling Used Cars???

ANOTHER week, another rumour about Tesco entering the car market is leaked to us… but this time it’s different. Why? Well, this rumour hasn’t come from the motor trade – this one came from within the supermarket giant itself!

Our source told us our exclusive stories about Tesco entering the car sales world are on the money and that a launch could happen as soon as JUNE! The mole added: ‘There is a dedicated unit set up within Tesco looking at how it can pull together all the different aspects of the business to leverage the offeroing.

‘This is looking at pulling in insurance, finance and other areas of the business to create the perfect offering for consumers. ‘The launch looks likely to be around June or July.’

The mole couldn’t say whether the recent collapse of Autoquake had thrown a spanner in the works or whether the rumours about a partnership with Carsite were true either, but these latest revelations are certainly interesting.

Tesco has still made no official comment on the plans, saying only that it won’t comment on ‘speculation or rumour’.

Review: NEW Hybrid Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder

The 918 Spyder will be powered by a unique plug-in hybrid system that will include a high-revving, mid-mounted V8 engine with capacity of more than 4.0 liters and producing at least 500 horsepower. The engine will be based on the Porsche RS Spyder racing engine that demonstrated its impressive performance and efficiency through multiple Michelin Green X Challenge victories in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via Porsche’s compact, seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox.

Two electric motors – one each on the front and rear axles – together will provide approximately 218 additional horsepower. This configuration also will offer an innovative, variable all-wheel drive system with independent control of the drive forces on both axles. Electrical energy will be stored in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a standard household outlet. Electric-only driving range is expected to be more than 16 miles on the NEDC. Recharge time will depend on each country’s electrical power network, but charging is expected to take about seven hours at 110V/10A in the United States. A quick-charge option is being evaluated to further reduce charging times.
With anticipated combined fuel consumption of just 3.0 L/100 km on the NEDC, this equates to CO2 emissions of only 70 g/km or 112 g/mile. On the other hand, the Porsche 918 Spyder will deliver super sports car performance. It is estimated that the final production version will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds on its way to an estimated top track speed of 199 mph. It should also tackle Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordschleife in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds, two seconds faster than the Porsche Carrera GT. Under the right conditions, the 918 Spyder will be able to drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 94 mph for limited distances.

Customers who order the 918 Spyder also have the opportunity to acquire a special-edition 911 Turbo S Coupe or Cabriolet. Also limited to no more than 918 units, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder will have exterior and interior design elements echoing the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder supercar’s styling. It features similar exterior colors, carbon-fiber elements inside and out, enhanced leather equipment and numerous acid-green accents on items such as the brake calipers, illuminated sill plates, interior stitching and instrument cluster needles. A limited-edition badge on the glove compartment door will feature the same production number as the customer’s 918 Spyder.
To ensure the 918 Spyder’s worldwide exclusivity, Porsche will produce no more than 918 examples. Start of production at Porsche’s famed factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is planned for Sept. 18, 2013 (9/18), and the U.S. base manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $845,000 (excluding destination and handling charges).

Worldwide 918 Spyder customers can begin ordering this special edition 911 Turbo S sports car today, and customer deliveries will start later in 2011. The U.S. base manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for the Coupe and Cabriolet versions are the same as the standard 911 Turbo S models, $160,700 and $172,100 respectively, excluding destination.

To get the best price for your car, a little preparation will make a lot of difference. If you take that little bit of extra care now you will reap the rewards when you're vehicle goes up for sale. If you notice any problems with your vehicle while preparing it for sale why not check with your local dealer.

Before advertising.... Clean inside and out.

Give it a wax / polish and try to remove and light scratches and marks
Remove all rubbish: empty the ash tray and put in an air freshener.
Lift all floor mats and hoover seats and floor carpets including the boot.
Remove personal belongings, especially those that rattle or will distract the driver.
Carry out a basic maintenance check.
Include all fluid levels e.g. oil, coolant, brake, battery, washer.
Tyre pressures.
Operation of all lights and other electrical items.
Get together all your vehicle records.
V55 (registration document)
All M.O.T. certificates (if the vehicle is over 3 years old)
Service / maintenance receipts, service history.
Your proof of ownership e.g. the last owners receipt.
Check you have all keys including spares, alarm, remote locking controls, locking wheel not key, radio security code.

If you have outstanding finance check with your lender about early settlement if required.

Decide on a reasonable price given the vehicles condition, accessories fitted, age and mileage. Check other adverts from private sellers (dealers will be charging more as they offer warranties and a higher level of security to a buyer).

Take four pictures of your car to use in your advert. If you have a digital camera save the images as 'JPEG' files. The image will not need to be larger than 640 x 480 pixels if your camera has this option. If you have a scanner, scan the images (you only need a resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch) for web pages) and save as 'JPEG' files.

Advertise your car.... You can advertise your car for free on CompuCars & many Vehicle Websites. Add 4 pictures for maximum effect. Add at least one picture from the front corner, one from the opposite side rear corner and one of the driving area through the open drivers door. Add as much information as you can. Don't simply list things, write a sentence or two about your vehicle, its condition and history, reason for sale, unusual extras etc.

If you choose to display your telephone number, ensure you have all your vehicle documentation to hand so you can answer buyers questions.

Request that buyers who would like to visit and test drive your car bring their driving licence and proof of insurance (if your insurance will not cover them).

Be prepared to have buyers wanting to visit at short notice.

Showing your car to buyers.... Check out our Buyers guide to get an idea what people will be looking for and the questions they will ask. Consider any offer made below the asking price in relation to other similar vehicles you have seen for sale, the condition of your vehicle and its history (i.e. number of owners, servicing record) and accessories fitted (some accessories - even expensive ones - do not enhance the value of the car to most buyers, so don't always hold out for that extra money, where possible offer to remove the expensive accessory and sell it separately or fit it to your next car).

If the buyer is a trader or from a car dealership, they are considered professionals and as long as your vehicle is as described (e.g. the mileage is accurate, it has not been stolen or subject to finance) they will not have the 'come back' that other private buyers will have. For this reason and the fact they they normally act very quickly, it maybe worth considering a slightly lower price in this type of transaction.

Discuss any items that are currently in the vehicle which you intend to remove e.g. Tax discs can be cashed in (forms available from your Post Office) Agree a price and collection date.... Once you have agreed on the terms of the sale put everything in writing, including a collection date and obtain the new owners full contact details. Request a deposit.

Agree terms on payment of the balance. Bankers draft is normal. If you will want to confirm the drafts authenticity arrange to complete the transaction during banking hours so you can ring the bank that issued it.

Do not hand over vehicle documentation at this stage such as the V55 or M.O.T.Vehicle Collection.... Remove all your personal belongings. Remove any items you have agreed that are not part of the transaction.

Issue a receipt to the buyer and hand over all vehicle documentation (excluding your section of the V55 registration document).

Permanent Exports
If you intend to take your vehicle abroad for more than 12 months, this is regarded as a permanent export. Before you go you must complete the V5 Registration Document, to show the intended date of export and return the document to DVLA or to a DVLA Local Office. In its place, you will receive a Certificate of Export V561 as confirmation of your vehicle's registration.

If you do not have a V5 Registration Document or if you have a Green V5/2 New Keeper's Supplement, you will need to apply for an export certificate using form V756 which is available from a DVLA Local Office. Make sure that you provide all the information requested on the form including the chassis number of the vehicle. You can either take or send your application to a Local Office or alternatively send it to DVLA, Swansea. If the application is made in person to a Local Office you will be required to provide proof of identity such as a Driving Licence, Passport or a utility bill which clearly shows your name and address.

Unless you are already registered as the keeper of the vehicle, checks for entitlement may have to be made before an Export Certificate is issued. If the Local Office is unable to issue the Certificate, the application will be forwarded to the DVLA and despatch of the certificate may be delayed while entitlement is established.

The Local Office will not accept an application more than 14 days in advance of the date of export.
Note: You may be required to surrender the Export Certificate (or the V5 registration document if it is still in your possession) to the foreign authority when the vehicle is registered abroad.

Temporary Exports

If you are taking your vehicle out of the country for less than 12 months you must take your V5 registration document with you. If you do not have a Registration Document you should apply for one at a DVLA Local Office using form V62 or, if you have a Green V5/2 New Keeper's Supplement in your name, form V379/1. Proof of identity such as Driving Licence, Passport or utility bill and proof of purchase i.e. bill of sale may be required when you apply. After checks of the vehicle record at DVLA are completed you should be issued with a temporary Certificate of Registration to cover the period away. It is essential that either Certificate be applied for well in advance of the intended date of export. If the DVLA Local Office is unable to issue the Certificate for any reason, the application will have to be forwarded to DVLA and despatch of the Certificate may be delayed whilst entitlement is established.

Remember to consult your car insurer to check that your use is properly covered. You will also need to fix a GB sticker to the rear of your vehicle and carry onboard any other items required by the local Country e.g. Spare bulb / fuse kit, first aid kit.
