I came across this very interesting message written on a colleague's whiteboard and it got me thinking. It's so true! Only if everyone thought this way, our lives would be so much better.

While looking for some writing projects, all of us can relate to this message and be successful. When writing to your prospective clients, let your emails reflect confidence and the right attitude. No one, absolutely no one is very thrilled to receive an email from a person who can't assure the client of a job well done. Since the freelance writing world strives majorly on emails, it becomes imperative to give the right impression the very first time. Initially, you may make a couple of mistakes but you will only learn from them.

Implement different strategies if you do not receive any responses to your emails. Once you start receiving responses from the emails that you have sent, make a note of the strategies that you have used and jot down the ones that have been successful. Use the same or improve if you wish and see some major writing projects coming your way.

Have you ever been in a situation where there are plenty of decent paying jobs to choose from but you haven't managed to land a single one. Your bid and the turnaround time is the least but no luck; someone, somewhere has landed the job that you were sure was yours. Isn't it a very lousy feeling? Well, I don't know about you, but I definitely am down in the dumps.

But thanks to my positive thinking, I bounce back into action asap and start hunting for some more jobs as if my life depended on it :-)...Come to think of it my life does depend on it. It's the only source of my income and survival of the fittest is the name of the game.

It struck me today, 'There must literally be hundreds and thousands like me looking for jobs but is everyone as positive as me???' Then a thought crossed my mind, so what if I do not manage to get 'a' project, I can always help others around me get it. This is why I have decided that from now on, any interesting jobs advertised on the World Wide Web that catches my eye will find a place in my blog. In this way, those who read my blog can instantly look for some more job opportunities.

I read somewhere that the toughest part of freelance writing is not writing but getting the freelance writing opportunity. It's so true!

To PPC or not to PPC

Pay-Per-Click or PPC advertising is another technique of advertising your website. PPC works in a rather simple way. The most common way of making money through PPC ads are by letting them display on the search engines. Only when they are clicked will you be charged. That's what pay-per-click literally means.

With 2 main categories, Keyword and Content Match, you have the liberty to choose where you would like to advertise. If you choose the option of Keyword, then your ads will appear on the search engines. The ads appear under the 'Sponsored Links' category as shown below in yellow and on the right.

In the Keyword option, you as an advertiser needs to zero down on words or phrases that best describes your website. Then all you need to do is bid for those keywords and the links of your advertised website will appear in the order of the highest bidder to the lowest.

The Content Match option lets you advertise on the affiliate/publisher websites, newsletters, and via emails.

It may sound simple but in reality advertising through PPC is not that easy and an adept knowledge of the working of the PPC ads is essential in order to capitalize and make big bucks through it. Luckily, there are a lot of businesses out there who gladly offer advertising services.

Frankly, a lot. Having a brilliant website design incorporated with Flash, the most creative animations and graphics, and all the jazzy-snazzy effects is not enough for a website to do well. If you feel it is more than enough, then sit back for 5 minutes and think. How many websites have you come across in the recent past with special effects and zilch content or copied content doing well? Even a gaming website, where content is not the most important criteria has some content. Do you see then what the power of words can do?

Unique content on your website has the following benefits,

1. Increase in traffic thus leading to increased page ranks
2. Your website gets indexed faster with unique content than with websites with duplicate content

Optimize using Meta Keywords
It does not matter if your content is the best because if the search engines do not notice your website, then how will the target audience know about you. For this, you need to ensure that your content has relevant keywords with the help of a proper Keyword Tool. However, you need to remember not to overuse the keywords on a page, as it will only hamper the flow of your content.

Optimize using Page Titles
You need to ensure that the website titles need to be different on each page. Preferably, a short one-liner on what your page talks about. Since not all your website pages would talk about the same things, it would be a good idea to describe the content of your page. For instance, if you own a travel website and are talking about different cities on each page, then your page titles should not be more than 60 to 80 characters and include at least one keyword in the page title that appears on that page.

Optimize using Heading Tags
The H1, H2, H3, etc. heading tags can be optimized by mentioning the most important keywords as the headings. However, ensure that the page title and the heading tags differ.

Optimize using Unique Content

Google Comes Crawling

Ever wondered how Google decides which website should be first, second, third, fourth...tenth, etc. in their list of ranks? Do you also want to be featured in the list to increase the visibility of your website? I am sure you do. Visibility on Google means an increase in the sale of your services or products. In most countries, Google is the most preferred way for searching anything under the sun. Whether the Internet users are searching for baby names or some gift items, whether they are looking for content writing services or a particular product, Google.com is the most preferred destination.

Predominantly, Google uses three main steps termed as Crawling, Indexing, and Serving. Crawling is a process that involves Google discovering new pages and content that is updated, which can be indexed and added to the database at Google.com. Indexing involves collating all the words on a particular page and their location into a huge index that Google maintains. Serving is when an Internet user searches for a particular word or phrase, machines at Google search their indexes for those particular words or phrases that match and display the most relevant results. I came across chrisblogging.com on one of my ‘surf’ modes on the Internet and believe me I was totally floored by the blog. Any person on the verge of starting a blog should make it a point to refer to this blog. Let’s see, he started this blog almost a year ago and the blog has been nothing but encouraging in all aspects. It got me, a very lazy girl to start blogging regularly. In fact, I was so brainwashed that I decided to start another blog. (btw still thinking what to write on)

One thing I would like to say here is that no matter what you write on, write as if the whole world reads your blog from Day 1 and every single day after that. This will definitely get you and your blog far. This is certainly something that has helped me continue blogging.

As far as making money online goes, chrisblogging.com discusses about all the options under the sun, Pay Per Click, Article submissions, Google adsense, et al. If you want to make money sitting at home comfortably through blogging and freelance writing, then you should not miss this blog. The blog has some great tips and remarkable advice that will definitely help you like the way it helped me. While surfing online for some work a couple of days back, I came across an interesting site that I’d like to mention here. The site is called www.writingworld.org. I could actually relate to the concerns that were being voiced on the site about many freelance writers ready to work for as less as $5 for a 500-word article. She rightly went on to say that, it shows an amateur freelance writer, desperately looking to make quick bucks without even stopping to think what impression a buyer would get. You guys should check out the site. It even has some interesting polls that would definitely interest you all.

When a serious buyer is looking for someone to write quality articles, s/he will definitely research the market, check the various rates that a particular work is being done for, weigh all the pros and cons, and then finally decide from which person to get the work done. In his/her search, s/he must have definitely come across varying rates ranging from $3 for a 300-word article, $30 for a 200-word article to $50 for a 100-word article. A buyer who is relatively new to the freelance writing scenario would make the obvious choice of going in for the writer who charges the least for the maximum number of words.

However, buyers with real-time, ongoing projects and more experience on the World Wide Web would immediately be able to spot the difference between true professional writers from amateur ones. A professional writer knows his/her work’s worth and would never lower his/her rates to such an extent only to get a few hundred dollars. In fact, a professional writer would wait until a really good project that pays what its worth comes along. Recovering from the Startling Discovery!

Even though I haven't managed to update my blog often, I did not miss out on looking out for some substantial freelance work that will get the ball rolling. I bid for quite a few projects and I was offered most of the work as well. But I turned them down as I did not feel that my work was being valued. Writing cheap and poor quality content is one thing and giving quality work to the person who deserves it is quite another.

I wish to excel and leave a mark in the field of writing, but at the rate writers are being valued is making me difficult to move on. Although, I have noticed a very steady trend of work being done for as less as 1/2 cent a word, I have promised myself not to lower my rates to such an extent. For me, being without work for sometime is fine but I am definitely not going to compromise on the quality of my articles and also my rates.

You may feel then, 'How does she plan to survive in the freelance world?' Well, I have survived very well till now and I know I will continue surviving. With the work trickling in slowly but surely, I know I will achieve my dream of being famous in the freelance world... :-) That my friends is called 'Being Positive!'

To most it may sound like a childish and lame dream but to me writing my heart out is my passion just like for many it's music, movies, books etc. You name any topic and I can probably go on writing for hours on end. You'd think, 'With such passion, she can probably complete a novel.' 'What is she doing here?' Honestly, I am here because I can talk about anything under the sun and at the same time share my experience of freelance writing with all of you.

You have the freedom of expression on my blog and no hard feelings whatsoever. Go on, feel free to thrash my work or appreciate my work. :-)

A Startling Discovery...

Before I divulge the details of my startling discovery, let me put forth my thoughts.

Writing is not an easy task and a lot of effort and dedication needs to be put in (I'm sure all the writers reading this must have agreed). Even an accomplished novelist / author may take a number of years to come up with a genuine masterpiece. Then you can imagine the plight of the numerous freelance writers that are only getting started. Whether you talk about research or browsing the net, writing 1000 odd words in a few hours or a good 40 odd or more pages e-book in a couple of days, coming up with catchy one-liners or rewriting articles...all this and much more requires several man hours and a lot of hard work. I hope all the writers are with me so far.

If all of you have agreed till now and know the amount of work you are undertaking even for a 250 or 300 odd word article should know the value of your work, shouldn't you? I trust I am quoting only what is running through your minds as well.

Then why should you agree to work for peanuts?? Mr. Alfred Nobel also realized the importance of literature and left his wealth to an establishment, so that in the future, men and women could be honored for their exceptional contribution in the field of literature along with physics, chemistry, medicine, and for work in peace in the form of the most distinguished Nobel prizes. Then why this discrimination now?

There is still time; we writers can still wake up and take notice. If a client isn't ready to pay our money's worth, then s/he definitely doesn't deserve the quality content that we are capable of churning out. I sincerely hope that you will join me in my appeal to all the content buyers out there.

If you are paying less, then please do not expect quality work from us. I am very sure that you must have heard of the phrase, 'As you sow so shall you reap.' If you expect quality content and timely delivery, then be ready to spend more.

(I am only voicing the thoughts of the various freelance writers out there. While looking for some freelance work, I came across a lot of forums where the discussions of unjustified payment scales to the freelance writers were highlighted. I also browsed a lot of sites where one can bid for projects and noticed the same pattern there.)

And now that blogs can be in different languages as well, you will find even more blogs getting added by the minute. In fact, this very moment when I'm writing my first post, I am pretty sure that hundreds of blogs have already made their presence felt on the Internet. 'So what's different with this one?' 'What's in it for me?'...may be some of the questions that must have definitely crossed your mind.

Well, I promise you that if you stick around longer and keep visiting my blog frequently, I won't let you down. There are a number of thoughts that are literally fighting each other in my head dying to come out...You can imagine then what I must be going through. ;-)

I have finally found a way to share my thoughts with all my fellow bloggers and non-bloggers as well. This is the reason why I decided to start a blog about my initial experiences and struggle in the world of freelancing (sounds very dramatic, doesn't it?).

I am basically a content writer and have been involved in a number of projects. I have written content for brochures, newsletters, case studies, quizzes, and the like. Basically, anything to do with writing and you can be sure that I have done it all. A few days back I decided to try my hand at freelancing and I was in for a shocker. I could not believe what I was reading. I mean the freelancers were actually agreeing to it!!!
