“I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka’ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad, I drank water from the well of the Zam Zam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat.

“There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white.

“America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white - but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color.

Rosmah, isteri PM paling kontroversial?

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia dengan enam Perdana Menteri (PM) dan tujuh isteri Perdana Menteri semenjak PM pertama, isteri kepada PM terkini dianggap paling kerap diharungi kontroversi yang tidak putus-putus.

Jika era PM kelima, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi diselar oleh seorang lagi bekas PM iaitu PM keempat, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad kerana dikatakan menempatkan menantunya di tingkat empat Jabatan Perdana Menteri (JPM), Datuk Seri Najib Razak pula didakwa menempatkan pejabat isterinya di bangunan yang sama.

Isteri PM, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor ketika ini dilihat sedang menikmati kedudukan beliau sebagai isteri PM Malaysia apabila bukan sahaja berjaya mencuri tumpuan malahan menjadi satu-satunya isteri PM yang menerima peruntukan yang tinggi dan pejabat khas di Putrajaya untuk beliau.

Memetik lidah rasmi Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), edyesdotcom dan beberapa blog lain, Rosmah bukan sahaja memiliki pejabatnya sendiri malah turut mempunyai bahagian atau jabatan yang dinamakan Bahagian Wanita Pertama Malaysia atau First Lady of Malaysia Division.

Bahagian tersebut yang hanya ditubuhkan ketika era PM terkini itu, diketuai oleh Pegawai Khasnya Datuk Siti Azizah binti Sheikh Abod disamping lima lagi pegawai lain.

Selain dianggap keterlaluan, tindakan tersebut turut dianggap satu pembaziran apabila melibatkan perbelanjaan tambahan dana kerajaan seperti gaji pegawai dan kakitangan, ubah suai pejabat dan pelbagai kos lain yang berkaitan.

SUBANG JAYA: Ummi Hafilda Ali, who was a key witness in Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy and abuse of power trials in 1999, today challenged Anwar, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and his wife Shamsidar Taharin, and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to take an oath over the Quran (sumpah laknat).

This is to reveal the truth about Anwar’s sexual relationship with Shamsidar, which she claimed was was condoned by Azmin.

She also challenged Anwar to sue her if the allegations are false.

Ummi was speaking at a press conference here to announce that she would be filing a RM700 million suit against Anwar, Azizah, DAP chairman Karpal Singh and PAS.

She said she was seeking legal action because she wants justice and that she suffered a loss of RM10 million in business opportunities, which had not been compensated.

Another sex scandal in MCA?

KUALA LUMPUR: A MCA leader from the party’s Lenggong division in Perak has been accused of molesting a beautician at a club on New Year’s Eve.

The beautician had lodged a police report against the prominent politician on Dec 31 last year, claiming that he had groped her breast at a club in Ipoh.

According to Chinese vernacular newspaper reports, Perak police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan confirmed the matter but declined to elaborate.

Party insiders told FMT that the politician, who is holding a “high position” in the division had denied the allegation, but claimed that he was drunk at the time of the incident.

“He told us that he did not molest the women but nobody knows what exactly happened as he said he was drunk at that time,” said a leader from Perak, known to be a close associate of the accused.

Saya mengucapkan syabas di atas keberanian dan keikhlasan Juhar apabila diajukan dengan soalan tentang saat-saat yang tidak boleh beliau lupakan semasa menjadi Timbalan Speaker Dewan Rakyat selama Sembilan tahun bermula 1990 sehingga 1999, di bawah pentadbiran era Tun Dr.Mahathir.

Juhar mengaku secara terbuka bahawa saat yang tidak boleh dilupakan beliau ialah apabila Perdana Menteri dan juga Presiden UMNO ketika itu, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad mencadangkan satu pindaan ke atas perlembagaan Persekutuan bertujuan untuk menghapuskan immuniti Raja-Raja Melayu.

Juhar memuji Tun Dr. Mahathir atas sikapnya yang berani sehingga mampu menundukkan Raja-Raja Melayu serta menghilangkan kekebalan Raja-Raja Melayu.

Would Sabah be different if Tun Fuad, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin and Chong Thien Vun had survived?

I wonder will a Sabahan now prefer to be called a Sabahan instead of a Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Sungai, Bajau, Suluk, Bugis, Cina or etc.?

That day, the spirit of multicultural Sabah had also died.

The way I see it, it's never too late to recreate the spirit that had once made the Sabahan a proud race.

The Double Six Tragedy, also known as the Double Six Crash, was a plane crash which took place on June 6, 1976 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The plane, operated by Sabah Air, coming from Labuan crashed in the sub-district of Sembulan in Kota Kinabalu upon approaching Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The crash killed everyone on board the flight, including Tun Fuad Stephens, the Chief Minister of Sabah at that time. The other passengers on the flight were State Ministers Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun,
and assistant minister Darius Binion. Others who perished were the then Secretary of State for the Ministry of Finance of Sabah Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Director of Economic Planning Unit of Sabah Dr. Syed Hussein Wafa, Isak Atan (Private Secretary to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah), Corporal Said Mohammad (bodyguard to Tun Fuad Stephens), Captain Gandhi Nathan (the pilot of the aircraft) and Tun Fuad's eldest son Johari Stephens.

The reason behind the crash is uncertain. Immediately after the accident there were allegations of foul play because of the death of the Chief Minister, but no evidence of such has ever been found.

Bloody Sunday (Irish: Domhnach na Fola)—sometimes called the Bogside Massacre—was an incident on 30 January 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland, in which twenty-six unarmed civil rights protesters and bystanders were shot by members of the British Army. The incident occurred during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march; the soldiers involved were the First Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (1 Para). Thirteen males, seven of whom were teenagers, died immediately or soon after, while the death of another man four and a half months later has been attributed to the injuries he received on that day. Two protesters were injured when they were run down by army vehicles. Five of those wounded were shot in the back.

Two investigations have been held by the British Government. The Widgery Tribunal, held in the immediate aftermath of the event, largely cleared the soldiers and British authorities of blame—Widgery described the soldiers' shooting as "bordering on the reckless"—but was criticised as a "whitewash", including by Jonathan Powell, chief of staff to former prime minister Tony Blair.

The Saville Inquiry, chaired by Lord Saville of Newdigate, was established in 1998 to reinvestigate the events. Following a twelve-year inquiry, Saville's report was made public on 15 June 2010, and contained findings of fault that could re-open the controversy, and potentially lead to criminal investigations for some soldiers involved in the killings. The report found that all of those shot were unarmed, and that the killings were both "unjustified and unjustifiable." On the publication of the Saville report the British prime minister, David Cameron, made a formal apology on behalf of the United Kingdom.

EVERY morning, as I walk down my street I see the same homeless Chinese man sleeping on asphalt. Just around the corner there’s a Malay guy lying on his back, oblivious to the office workers walking by the sidewalk that has become his makeshift bedroom since even before I moved downtown five years ago. I walk a little further and I see a dreadlocked Indian lady getting up at a bus stop to make her way elsewhere.

Come evening time, as I am strolling back home through the neighboring vicinity, I see an Indian man driving a 2010 Jaguar XJ. A minute goes by and my neighbor, Mr Lee passes by me in his classic red Ferrari but only to pull up behind a Brabus that’s parked in front of a swanky Italian restaurant. Mr Lee had to wait for a big shot Malay broad to board the chauffeur-driven car before he could proceed to wherever the party is at.

These are the sort of things I see in the city on a daily basis. As there are poor people of different ethnic backgrounds so are there affluent folks of diverse races. The rich are having their RM400 wine and dine while the hardcore poor and homeless are going through trash to look for empty bottles and cans to trade for money to buy food. A pretty balanced 1Malaysia, I would say.

But then again, when I visit any fancy condos (priced at RM800,000 and above), say in Mont Kiara, I clearly see that most of the owners of the units are non-Malays, predominantly Chinese, Indians and expats. Why are most of these units owned and occupied by non-Malays when the Bumiputras make the majority of the population (67 percent) and have even been given 10 to 15 percent discount on property purchase? Why are the Malays able to buy luxury vehicles yet we hardly see any Malay owners of these luxury condo units?

What Happened to the Malay Multimillionaires?
In economics point of view, in any country (except for maybe Brunei), there will always be poor people and rich people. The aim of any nation is to narrow the gap between the two. But why are the Malays don’t seem to be as rich as the Chinese? Or are they?

Even when you look at Forbes top ten richest Malaysian list you’ll see there’s only one Malay (Syed Mokhtar AlBukhary at number 7) while the rest are Chinese and there’s one Indian (Ananda Krishnan at number 2). Surely there must be more than a few more affluent Malays missing from the the Top 40 list.

What happened to the Malay multimillionaires like Tajuddin Ramli, Daim Zainuddin, Shamsuddin Abu Hassan, Wan Azmi, Halim Saad, Ahmad Sebi Abu Bakar, Taib Mahmud, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the other UMNO cronies? These people are known to own more than a few properties and businesses (even banks) around the world so the reason can only be either these people don’t declare their assets or their assets are under someone else’s name.

The NEP and UMNOputras
I had some conversations on this riddling occurrence with some Malay and Chinese old-timers (age 50 and over). As it turns out, the answers to the baffling questions above has to do with the implementation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and how Malaysians of all races exploit this policy which had been carved onto our Constitution since 1970.

When the NEP was introduced back then, it was conjured in haste and out of desperation to appease the perturbed Malays in the aftermath of the May 13 race riots in 1969. It was an idea agreed among all the components of the Alliance Party (Umno, MCA and MIC). So the NEP got the nod from both the Chinese and Indians who agreed to it for the sake of racial stability in a country in crisis.

But the NEP was not an open-ended policy as it was intended to be enforced for just 20 years so it is suppose to end by 1990. The then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad (photo) agreed with this and he even reminded the Malays about it again and again so that they would buck up and get their acts together in preparation. At the same time, he advised the Chinese businessmen to work with the Malays to help them prosper together. This was so that the government can repeal the NEP which is clearly making the Malays appear weak.

The thing about the NEP is, contrary to popular belief, the policy is actually not just about the Malays. According to a former central committee member of the Malay Chamber of Commerce (who is currently a fugitive), “the NEP is a multi-prong attack (senapang dua mata) to reduce the gap between the haves and have-nots (regardless of race), to make the distribution of wealth more equitable, and to reduce the disparity between the different races. This was what the NEP was all about.” However, somewhere along the way, the Malays either forgot about this multi-prong attack or became confused and began to think that the NEP was just about them.

Apparently, at that time, Mahathir realized there was no way to help the 15 million Malays to become rich in such a short time period. So he decided to make a few Malays very rich instead by creating a handful of Malay billionaires in hope that these guys would later help the rest of the Malays. However, as chivalrous as it seemed, the plan didn’t work out.

The chosen ones became billionaires but they did not help the other Malays. Instead, they chose to work with the Chinese and more and more Chinese billionaires were spawned from these dealings. Basically, a lot of Chinese became rich because of their partnership with the Umno cronies or Umnoputras.

When the NEP was first launched in 1970, the Malay share of the national equity was just 1.5 percent. It increased by 1985 but it was still just 3 percent. But the government was aiming for 30 percent by 1990. By this time, the government realized that it was just impossible to reach the targeted 30 percent in a mere five years as it took 15 years to grow from just 1.5 percent to 3 percent.

Should the non-Bumiputras be blamed for the Malays taking such a slow pace in catching up? Don’t get me wrong. The quality of life of the Malays has much improved and we owe this to the NEP despite some of its failures. It’s just that it can’t be helped that the Chinese and Indians did not remain static to wait for the Malays to catch up. All three races increased their wealth but the difference is the Chinese and Indians had a head start. And, at the same time, even when there were numerous programs created by the government for the purpose of wealth redistribution, these redistributive mechanisms were not as effective as there were so much corruption going on.

Borneo Front to remain a pressure group

KOTA KINABALU: Maverick politician Jeffrey Kitingan has quashed rumours that his United Borneo Front (UBF) will register as a political party.

He said it was in the process of being registered as a civil rights movement.

“We want everybody’s support,” he said. “If we are to register as a political body, then we have to be either in the opposition or the government.

“When people talk about politics, they talk about elections. I don’t want to get into the election mode.”

He added, however, that UBF would mentor political protégés and would support any party adopting its Borneo agenda into its manifesto.

“If a BN component party adopts our Borneo agenda, we will support it, but it doesn’t mean we will join (BN) as a political party.”

The statement was a reiteration of a point he made in his New Year message. He said then that UBF would be a “platform for unity regardless of political affiliations; everybody can support us because we are not biased towards any particular political alliance”.

He added: “We are a pressure group that criticises ineffective, repressive or irrelevant political models.”

GEORGE TOWN: Costlier pork, seafood and hawker fare are in the offing as the Chinese New Year draws near.

Penang Pig Butchers Association chairman Ng Chee Keen said pork prices had increased from RM17 to RM18 per kg from this week while roasted pork shot up from RM40 to RM44 per kg.

Penang Hawkers Association chairman Lam Tong Ying said food prices would be about 20% to 30% more expensive during the first three days of Chinese New Year.

“For example, a bowl of noodle costing RM2.50 may sell for RM3.00,” he said.

Lam added that the costlier fare was inevitable as some raw ingredients are pricier during the festive season due to increased consumption.

Prices of greens are also expected to shoot up by about 20% for a period of 10 days before and after the start of the Chinese New Year, according to Penang Vegetable Wholesalers Association chairman Tan Ban Ben.

Tan attributed it to both increased consumption and adverse weather conditions in China, which provides about 80% of the vegetables consumed here.

Seafood lovers would also have to pay more.

Fresh seafood seller Ch’ng Boon Cheng said prices could increase by as much as 50%.
He expected the increase to begin about two weeks before the Chinese New Year.

Attempt to rape attention from sodomy

KUALA LUMPUR: Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim, who has been accused of raping his Indonesian maid three years ago, has denied the allegation.

The 69-year-old Umno MP dismissed the allegation as wicked lies peddled by bloggers and opposition politicians.

In an obvious swipe at Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, Rais said his political rivals were hoping to use such baseless allegations to divert attention from the bigger crimes involving opposition leaders, such as sodomy.

“I refute the allegations, whether they are about raping any individual four years ago (2007) or any other allegation, raised by bloggers by any political entity,” he said in a statement.

He said these “wild allegations” were libellous and awful.

KUALA LUMPUR: The death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock was not a suicide and it was not a homicide, Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas ruled on Wednesday.

It is, therefore, an open verdict.
"The neck injury and the suicide note are the crucial evidence.

"Two theories of cause of death were advanced - death by homicide and death by suicide," he said.
"The handwriting of the suicide note was only similar to the deceased's. I'm not qiualified to say it's a suicide note.

"I rule out death of the deceased by suicide as there are unsettled issues in the question of suicide," he said.
He also ruled out homicide, saying that the inquest had established that Teoh had sustained pre-fall injuries but there was no evidence, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the injuries constributed to death.
