RAWALPINDI: A man who admitted assassinating a Pakistani provincial governor to defend the country’s controversial blasphemy laws appeared in a prison court for a preliminary trial hearing Monday.

Bodyguard Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri has confessed that he gunned down his boss, Punjab governor Salman Taseer, on January 4 because he objected to the politician’s wish to amend the blasphemy law, which carries the death penalty.

Taseer’s killing has met with mixed reactions in Pakistan, with many from the country’s increasingly powerful conservative religious quarter praising the gunman for acting to silence the outspoken moderate politician.

Rallies have been held in honour of Malik Mumtaz Qadri, who was showered with petals at earlier court hearings after he admitted to the shooting.

Monday’s hearing was held in private inside high-security Adiyala prison in Rawalpindi, a garrison city bordering capital Islamabad, with no media present.

Some 35 Qadri supporters from an Islamic youth group gathered outside the jail, reciting Koranic verses & shouting: “Allah is the Greatest”, “We salute you Malik Mumtaz Qadri” & “Long Live Malik Mumtaz Qadri Long Live Punjab police”.

Mumtaz Qadri lawyer Shuja Rehman told AFP that investigation reports were submitted to the court before the hearing was adjourned until February 1, when the gunman would be indicted.

“We met Mumtaz Qadri in the prison. He is being kept in solitary confinement which is another form of torture. We asked the court to allow his family members to see him & he be given legal facilities in the prison,” said Rehman.

No prosecuting lawyer was available to comment.

According to an investigating officer, Mumtaz Qadri in his confession said that he killed Salman Taseer by himself & he had no links with any extremist organisation but was “impressed” by the speeches of two outspoken clerics.

The clerics known for their fiery sermons – Mufti Qari Haneef Qureshi & Imtiaz Shah – sought & were granted injunctions at a Rawalpindi court last week preventing them being arrested in connection with Mumtaz Qadricrime.

Qureshi appeared outside the prison to support Mumtaz Qadri on Monday, & told AFP that he had no involvement in the killing.

Mumtaz Qadri could be “one of thousands who offer prayers led by me” said Qureshi.

“I have come here because I want him to be freed by the court.”

The killing has reignited controversy over Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which were recently used to sentence a Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, to death following a dispute with her fellow villagers in southern Punjab.

Taseer sought to amend the law, which human rights activists say is often abused in petty disputes, but in the face of huge public support for the legislation the government has said it has no plans to change it.

“You are a liar, and sick, and alcoholic. You are an alcoholic. That’s right. I said it and everybody knows.”

Don’t think she just took it lying down though! She fought back saying her sister was jealous of the men she was dating. After a storm out, the fight continued in the limo where more screaming and tears followed. After this all went down, the family decided that she needed help and checked her into a rehab center.

“Kim’s family checked her into rehab . . . A week later, she checked herself out. She is taking her life one day at a time.”

We haven’t heard much from the “alcoholic” since the incident and are hoping that she is getting some help. After the insane night, some of the ladies from the show, Kyle in particular, were nervous about seeing it on the finale. Hopefully all the women will learn a little something after seeing the episode and how they acted!

Karzai has spent hours in talks with a large delegation of legislators who have threatened to inaugurate parliament on Sunday without him, in open defiance of his authority.

It is thought the negotiations could drag on into the night.

They came after the United States and the United Nations called for the parliament to meet as quickly as possible, further ratcheting up the pressure on Karzai.

One lawmaker involved in early talks cited the president as saying he would inaugurate parliament on Sunday if the lawmakers recognised a special tribunal which is ruling on electoral fraud cases from September’s parliamentary elections.

“But the elected representatives opposed Mr Karzai’s demand and said they do not recognise the tribunal and its decisions,” Ahmad Behzad, seen as a critic of the president, told AFP.

“A number of lawmakers are still in the palace, trying to convince Mr Karzai to come to the inauguration ceremony but the lawmakers are not backing away from the plan to open it.”

Karzai’s office was not available to comment on the talks, which came following his return from a two-day official visit to Russia.

The president’s office announced on Wednesday that the inauguration of the new Wolesi Jirga, originally expected to take place on Sunday, had been postponed until February 22.

That announcement followed a call from the head of the special tribunal, which is considering more than 400 cases of alleged electoral fraud in September’s polls, for a delay of at least a month.

The tribunal head, Judge Sidiqullah Haqiq, warned that his body could still rule in favour of recounts.

As well as being hit by fraud and violence, the election resulted in a weak showing for the Pashtuns, Karzai’s traditional power base and Afghanistan’s biggest single ethnic group.

It added: “Afghanistan’s peaceful future lies in the building up of robust democratic institutions based on the rule of law and clear respect for the separation of powers.”

International troops fighting the Pashtun-dominated Taliban are due to start limited withdrawals in July ahead of Afghan forces assuming control of security in 2014.

Experts disagree on the constitutional status of a parliament inaugurated without Karzai.

Afghanistan’s Constitutional Oversight Commission, a watchdog nominated by Karzai and approved by parliament, says it cannot discuss the issue because it has not been officially referred to it.

The plan to go ahead without the president appears to have the support of a majority of Afghan lawmakers.

But it is not yet clear how many will turn up on Sunday and whether they will be allowed to sit in the parliament building itself or will have to convene elsewhere.

Nor has the international community in Afghanistan said whether it will send representatives to the event.

After the original parliamentary poll in September, electoral authorities disqualified 24 early winners, including allies of the president, and threw out around a quarter of about five million votes cast.

The attorney general’s office later called for the results to be annulled, saying the vote was marred by massive fraud. Karzai has yet to endorse the outcome.

Judicial Commission Names Justice Sarmad Usmani as SC Judge

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission has named Justice Mushir
Alam for Chief Justice of Sindh High Court (SHC) in place of Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, who has been nominated as a Supreme Court judge.

The decision has been made by Judicial Commission headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry here.

According to sources, the commission has recommended replacement of Justice Sarmad Jamal Usmani with Justice Mushir Alam in Sindh High Court.

It has also made a recommendation to regularize nine adhoc judges of the SHC.

“Discussions are under way to endorse regularization of 34 additional judges of the Lahore High Court (LHC),” sources added these recommendations will be sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment for further action.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Babar Awan said on Saturday the government has decided to undertake right sizing of the Federal Cabinet.

This is being done to create harmony among institutions,

Awan said.

The decision was made in Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Core Committee meeting.

It has been decided to reduce the number of ministers in the new Cabinet with a view to cut down governmentexpenditures.

The inclusion of ministers in the new cabinet will be made on the basis of their past performance.
