Hey everybody,

I hope you all had a refreshing Christmas. The new year is fast approaching. A friend and I had an idea to drive to New York City to celebrate New Years Eve and watch the ball drop in Times Square. A quick Google Maps search later...

Yes, about 3,000 miles and 2 days of driving. My friend owns a Prius and with gas prices as low as they are ($2.50 here) it would only cost around $200 in gas round trip. It's pretty neat how we could take I-80 the entire way.

Too much travel time. Instead we'll have to settle for something close to home – Seattle, San Francisco, or Las Vegas to celebrate New Years Eve. Not bad.

Speaking of road trips, spring break is approaching. My roommate's aunt owns a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The idea of warm beaches and tropical weather has tempted us over the years, but we gave in. This year has to be different. If no one is willing to step up and lead our band of hooligans on international road trips, I'll gladly wield the hammer, or whip, or whatever medieval weapons needed to kick some asses into gear.

At the very least, I'll settle for Vegas. But until then, Mexico it is.

Crock Pot Bean Recipe

Being the fiscally conservative college student that I am, I often find myself on the hunt for cheap foods that are nutritious and easy to make. This recipe may not be the best for someone watching their calories, but for a fast-metabolizing young adult like myself it's great.

Slow Cooked Pinto Beans (Prep: 10 minutes, Cook: 8 hours)
Ingredients:
1 Cup dry pinto beans
1 lb bacon strips
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
1 1/2 cup water

Directions:
This recipe works best as a dinner recipe. Begin preparing in the morning. To begin, pour the beans and water into the Crock Pot. Next, cook yourself up some delicious bacon (~4-5 strips) for breakfast. Cook until it is semi-crispy. Set the bacon aside and pour the bacon grease into your crock pot. Set the crock pot to low heat, and eat your bacon. You earned it. Now go ahead and live your life as lazy or productive as you feel like, your Crock Pot has your back.

8 hours later you've got some nice beans. Season with some salt, cumin, and garlic powder. Enjoy!

Long Hiatus

Hello my fellow bloggers,
Your king returns! My hiatus is over.
I switched my major from nuclear engineering to economics.
I also began getting higher grades. (Who knew less math and physics could lead to easier classes?!)
This term I took WR 323 – English Composition. We studied how to write concise prose, wrote persuasive essays including one satire, and had helpful peer review sessions with the class. Our professor taught us that peer review is more about learning by critiquing others than learning from getting your own work critiqued. It goes with the saying, "the strongest way to learn something is to teach it to someone else."

When I think about writing skills, I am reminded of running, in a weird way.
I used to run cross country in high school. My coach told me that I could lose months of physical training if I was inactive for just two weeks.
I think writing is similar in that regard. That's what brought me back to blogging; to stay in shape. I'll admit the first time around I had a poor focus – generating ad revenue. This time around I will focus on writing to improve my skill, inform, and entertain.

I'd like to employ the skills I learned in school to improve my writing. Perhaps even write some satire – the Onion and The Daily Show won't have shit on me. But seriously, I don't plan on becoming a preachy social justice warrior, I just want to have a bit of fun. As far as content goes, it will continue to be flexible. A little bit of personal life, and a little bit current events, and my stance in political debates.

I'm just another unfortunate college student paying my way through school, drowning in a sea of debt, majoring in the non-specific field of economics, without a clue where I'm going after I graduate. But one things certain – I enjoy writing and want to increase my writing ability. Join me on the way, followers. You won't be disappointed. (And if you are, let me know! I could use the feedback.)

Helloooooo oh and Portal 2

Hey everybody!

I realize it's been a very long time since I last blogged. I've been a little put off of it for a while.

My life's been going well. A few things: I passed Calculus class with a 70.1%! Awww yeah maybe not the best grade but C's get degrees ya know what I'm saying? Lol

Currently I have the pleasure of enjoying my spring break off from school, back home with my friends. It's a good feeling.

I've been playing a lot of League, Dota 2, etc. etc. but I also bought Portal 2!
I thoroughly enjoyed Portal 1, so I was very excited about Portal 2. So far it's been fun, with a great storyline and the same witty humor that I enjoyed from the original game. I definitely feel like it was worth the 10 dollars I spent for it on a Steam sale. If you guys haven't played it, but enjoyed Portal 1, definitely consider checking it out. :)

I've been feeling good about my life recently, have no worries. Maybe I'll blog more again soon. We'll see.

Blegh Roommate Issues

After spending a lot of time around someone, it's often the case that they may start irritating you.

Sometimes I love my roommate, but sometimes he can really start to grind my gears. Blegh. I wish it wasn't the case, but it often is when you spend most of your time around one person. Spring Break needs to get here already, so that we can go home and and refresh ourselves, and then when we come back to our dorm we won't be irritated with one another.

So I was solving my rubiks cube for another friend that lives down the hall when my roommate, Tresdin, told him how easy it is to find the "equations" online. No one that I have ever met that has talked about the steps they use to solve a rubiks cube refers to them as "equations". Most people call them "algorithms". So I explained to Tresdin that they are not equations, but rather algorithms. He told me it doesn't matter because they mean the same thing. I think that's wrong too, but I humored him and said that if that was the case, we were both right and both wrong. He said that he never said I was wrong, and that I was the first to point my finger at him.

And now he went to class and I desperately want to do research on whether or not equation = algorithm (which I did already) just so I can argue it to him. But I get the feeling that he would just tell me he doesn't care. Still it's frustrating. He will argue his point and then when I try to argue my side, he'll just tell me that I'm wrong and if I try to insist that I'm right, he'll tell me he doesn't care. But he obviously does care, or else he wouldn't disagree with me in the first place.

I probably sound like a little bitch. I'm probably being a little bitch. I'm just irritated.
Tresdin is interesting... He went through a breakup recently, almost a 4 year breakup. He barely talks to me about it. It's just weird, sometimes I think we're friends, and sometimes I feel like he hardly considers me close at all. I'm here for him if he would open up. But I guess he doesn't want to. I need to respect his choice.

His mood is always changing, which I should expect based on his recent breakup.
I should just stop complaining, but it's good to get it out I suppose.

So today is my birthday which is pretty cool. I haven't blogged in a while and kind of frustrated with it still since Google Adsense disabled my account. That 80 dollars I "made" does not exist.

Friday time already!

Today is Friday, which is excellent timing. I was getting ready for a weekend. My week was pretty busy, but I got done with most of my homework and my speech went well, which was very satisfying. :)

I've been playing a lot of League of Legends with my friends. I'm still playing a lot of Dota 2, but the LoL is fun since I actually have real life friends that will play it with me constantly.

Tonight in Dota 2 I played bloodseeker against a team with antimage and akasha. Basically I should of raped them because Bloodseeker's ultimate is Rupture, which deals damage to heroes based on how much they move. Both Akasha and Antimage have blink abilities which teleports them a good range, and thus deals extremely high damage to them should they try to escape after Bloodseeker ruptures one of them. Bloodseeker is basically a shut-down counterpick to heroes who blink, but for some reason I have never been able to play him well, even in Dota 1. The other part of it was my whole team left the game, so it was just me alone against a whole team. Unfortunately I was not fed enough to take them on full rambo-mode, so I was defeated.

Something exciting for tonight: Big ole' LAN party in my dorm hall! Hopefully my friends and I can play some games versus some other people, should be fun!

Moar Homework

Today I'm working on more chemistry homework and finally writing my speech that I have to give tomorrow. I have the outline written down so I just need to make note cards. My friends keep trying to get me to play League of Legends with them but I gotta get my priorities straight.

The speech I'm giving is a 5 minute speech on outsourcing. Wish me luck!
Other than that stuff my days gone pretty well. Classes went well!

Monday time

It's Monday! I had a pretty good day. I don't have much to blog about today. I have Homework in all my classes. My friends are playing League of Legends right now in my dorm room but I have to finish some Nuclear Engineering homework I have to do. We're learning about plotting data in a program called Matlab. I made a three dimensional spiral thing required for my homework assignment.

It was pretty easy after I finally figured it out.
My blog entry is going to be pretty short today because I don't have a lot of stuff to talk about.

Overall life's good. This quarter is going to be over soon for me. Next week is dead week, then we have finals and SPRING BREAK! There's something to look forward to! :)

Misfits

Misfits is a British sci-fi/comedy/drama television show that focuses on a group of young adults doing community service for everything from buying/selling illegal drugs to stealing candy from a vending machine. A mysterious storm hits which grants people interesting powers. The writers are simply brilliant. Everyone that I've told about this show in my real life so far that has watched it told me how much they enjoyed it. My friends, neighbors, hell even my own father. I watch the show on Hulu, but I'm sure you can also find it other places if you look. Enjoy!

Homework vs video games

In the one corner we have the nightmare of college students. The boring, tedious, and otherwise uninteresting work that has to be completed outside of class -- HOMEWORK! In the other corner we have the exciting and fun distraction called VIDEO GAMES. This will truly be a match worth seeing tonight, folks.
Oh, what's this? The video games has already won the match! He has subdued the homework, and is now the clear victor of this fight!

The story above would probably have been my weekend if I had chosen to take part in a campus wide LAN party. I would have had tons of fun, but I also wouldn't have gotten any homework done this weekend. Hopefully I won't later regret this choice.

Recently my nuclear engineering professor gave us a homework assignment. Many of the problems come from the book, which I don't have. Since my professor had offered a pdf file of the photocopied homework questions from the book for a previous homework assignment, I inquired if he would do this again. His response was, "No, it's your guy's responsibility to get the textbook on your own." I stated that I had been trying to buy the book from the book store, but they had ran out at the start of the term, and I had placed a special order which they never sent out and must of lost. "Well then you'll have to share with someone else that has the book, you have friends in this class."

I asked a few people who either didn't have the book them self or couldn't help me. Finally I sent out a message to all nuclear engineering freshman explaining my situation. I got an email that was from my the department head sending a reply to my message to my professor, saying "I got this message from one of your students, could you help him out?"

The very next email in my inbox was from my professor, attached was the homework assignments from the book photocopied into a pdf file. I found it kind of funny that my teacher had changed his mind, probably because I got his superior involved. My professor is just a grad student himself working on doctorate's degree.

So now I can finally do all of my homework! Hooray!

I checked out the LAN party. It would of been A LOT of fun. Everywhere I looked was just rows and rows of computers running Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Tribes Ascend, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Minecraft and other great games.

My Friday and a Minecraft update

It's Friday! I have a lot of homework for this weekend but I'm still excited for it to be the end of the week. I just finished eating a delicious Reuben pastrami sandwich from a local sandwich shop with a dark chocolate chip cookie and a soda... Mmmm

I've played some Tribes: Ascend today which was really fun. If I am in a game with noobs I purposely try not to target the noobs and go for the harder kills / more experienced players that are more of a match for me, because I don't want the newbies to get discouraged from playing Tribes.

I've also played more Minecraft. My underwater fortress is going to take a looooong time to complete. I measured the dimensions today. It is 20 cubes deep into the water, with a total length of 64 and a width of 42. All together 20*64*42=53,760 blocks to fill it all in. I have to fill it in so that the water will go away. It's going to take a while, but hopefully I'll finish it sometime. Currently I am about 1/4 done.

It is really cool to have built something so big that it appears on the map as a grey box.

Also here is a silly picture where I found a place that had rain stop. The game only puts rain into one part of the map at a time, so here I am on the edge. I thought it was funny.

Fun in the snow

It snowed tonight. After finishing a Dota 2 game with Ursa I joined my friends outside. We walked over to another dorm hall where there was a crowd of people gathering outside in the snow. We each took turns trying to throw snowballs into dorm room windows of kids who were egging us on, telling us to hit them, let them catch it, etc. A few cars came by which were of course nailed with snow balls.
Finally a police officer drove by, but when he spoke to us he was very polite and told us that it was okay to have fun, but we shouldn't throw snowballs at windows in case we caused any damages. My friends and I left around that time.

On the walk back to our dorm hall a campus security vehicle drove by slowly, one of the windows rolled down, and a snowball came flying in our direction. The car drove off to quickly, and we chased it fruitlessly. I thought it was great that the campus security had joined in the fun of throwing snowballs.

I didn't bring my phone for any pictures, but it was way to dark anyway.
It was a great adventure to end my day, now it's time for sleep because I am one of the people with an 8 am class tomorrow!

My lack of staples

Just got back the first homework assignment we had to do for my nuclear engineering class. It was a resubmitted copy because due to communication errors the majority of the class did not follow guidelines that are imposed for all homework assignments, resulting in most people receiving scores of 20/100. After resubmitting my homework I got a much nicer score of 93.5/100, and seeing this in the top left corner made me laugh. I would of used a staple but my stapler was empty. :P Thought a paper clip would do but I guess not! Not like I really care though, it's only half a point and now I have more staples!

My day's been going pretty well. Every once in a while I think everyone can take comfort in apathy. Take a look at all of the things stressing you right now. Stop and tell yourself that you'll get through it. Tell yourself that it's probably not a huge deal on the whole grand scheme of things. That's what I do sometimes and it definitely helps me feel better. Once I realize that I don't need to be worrying about things, I can just relax and I feel like everything goes much smoother.

Gotta love power naps!

I love taking quick naps when I feel sluggish and tired. It really recharges some of my energy. It especially works on days like today when I have 8 am class. :)

My day went pretty well. I just got back from the grocery store, I bought a lot of food which is always exciting for the poor college student who normally lives off a Top Ramen diet. I don't have a lot of homework tonight so I'm probably going to play some video games which will be exciting! :)

Right now I'm about to go to dinner, so it looks like it's going to be a short blog today. Check back tomorrow and hopefully I'll have an update on my Minecraft project, we'll see. :P Until tomorrow!

Lacking motivation

I remember a constant feeling I had last year, when I was a senior in high school. It was the feeling of senioritis which is characterized by lack of motivation in any schoolwork when you are in the final year of your high school education. I had felt like I had been moved along through the public school's digestive tract of education, and finally ready to exit the bowels.

With this feeling however, I looked forward to new things. I looked forward to a brighter future. Now I look at myself. I see myself again in college, disinterested in a lot of my studies again, and feeling like my purpose is to jump through an even longer series of hoops. But I am no longer a senior, I am a freshman again, and once again I have another 4 years ahead of me.

I wouldn't say I'm depressed, I am still enjoying video games and spending time with friends, but I feel like I'm just less and less motivated to do well in school. I always go to all of my classes, I always do all of my homework, but when it comes to studying I am weak. Unfortunately, this had led to me earning less than the class average in the majority of my midterms. I am barely passing multiple classes with Cs.

I want to feel inspired about learning again. I want to have passion and a drive, and a thirst for knowledge. But sadly it appears that I won't see that again in my near future for quite some time.

That or it could just be because it's a Monday.
(But probably not)

Tribes: Ascend

If you enjoy first person shooters, jetpacks, and free games I suggest you check out Tribes: Ascend ASAP. Seriously, it's a fun game that is in free open beta. I downloaded it the other day and had lots of fun.

This isn't the first games I've played from the Tribes series. Out of Tribes 1, Tribes 2, and Tribes Vengeance I have played Tribes 2 exclusively for the last couple of years. I always encouraged my friend to get into it with me but they always criticized it for it's graphics, learning curve, or inability to be "fun".

Tribes: Ascend on the other hand offers fast paced, Tribes iconic action (jetpacks and skiing provide the mobility to the game that must be mastered in order to play well) while also generalizing the game to appeal to a broader community. One of my friends that never enjoyed Tribes 2 recently tried Tribes Ascend and told me he enjoyed it!

Probably the most rewarding feeling is the fact that I've played a lot of Tribes 2 in my day and felt like I was barely average skill level based on the rest of the Tribes 2 online community. After my first match in Tribes Ascend I realized that I was already far ahead of most players in the terms of skill level, just because I am already very familiar with skiing, jetpacking, and most of all using the spinfusor.

The storm

Last night we had some lightning. I went to a mexican food place with my friends that was open late (we went around 1 or 2 am). Because of the restaurant's close proximity to a college campus it was of course swamped on a Friday night, filled with people craving burritos. Suddenly the whole room went black aside from a few faint emergency lights and the glowing exit sign. Then it flickered back on, and back off. "Free burritos!" Was of course shouted by the swarm of college students with appetites.

The power didn't come back on, the customers who hadn't ordered were asked to leave, and we left shortly after. All of the streetlights were off. The whole street was submerged in darkness.
Later after I got back to my dorm hall someone said they saw green lightning.
Apparently Lord Voldemort's out there casting Avada Kedavra again, disrupting the college student's eateries.

In other news I've been playing more Dota 2. The lack of skill level of the players I am fighting is a little astonishing, but it might just be because the game is matching me with newbies since I haven't logged many matches in it yet. I usually play single draft mode because that's all that I can get into after a 2 min long game search. It's quite a lot of fun, I definitely love the new animations and voices. For example today I got first blood as Huskar. He said, "Hah, first blood, the gods were right to place their trust in me!" Or something to that affect. I think it's really cool that they say things like that. It definitely makes me feel like Dota 2's voices are far superior to LoL in comparison. |
More on that later, I've got more games to enjoy for now. :)

Pizza Time

I was sitting my room after hours of Dota 2 with my roommate and getting hungry for dinner. Then some of our neighbors in our hall said that they are going to make pizza for dinner. I've had the pizza they've made before and it was amazing! Like seriously they make it 100% from scratch including the dough. It's some of the best pizza I've ever had.

I gotta say I'm impressed with Dota 2. Probably the thing that I have spent the most time relearning in the game is the shop since it is no where near set up the way as it is in Dota 1. This will eventually be an improvement but right now it's funny how much I look through it like a little babby all new to Dota again. The graphics are great and I love the voices. It feels new, but it still has an enjoyable Dota feel to it.

I have the best roommate ever! One of his tutors for his computer science class is the president of the gaming club at my school. After my roommate explained to him that I'm an avid Dota 1 fan and looking to play Dota 2, he contacted me and gave me a Beta key! I'm as giddy as a school girl, soooo excited to begin playing. As of right now I have to go run to take my Chemistry midterm, but when I get home I'm going to play some Dota 2!

All my invites have been distributed. But I'll keep you guys posted if I get in contact with some more keys :)

Classes today

Today I turned in my debate speech outline on whether the US federal government should penalize companies who outsource jobs. I'd like to thank Shockgrubz and Jeffrey Ross for offering their testimony to the matter. The feedback is much appreciated!

Today was also part 2 of a lab I had in my Nuclear Engineering orientation class. Monday we measured doses of radiation with Geiger counters and experimented with shielding materials (wood, aluminum, lead, etc) to measure how well each material could protect from radiation.
This time on the other hand we had a lab on thermal hydraulics, experimenting with a natural circulation loop, which is basically a process that circulates hot and cold water in nuclear reactors using natural laws like gravity.

Meanwhile our professor told us about how some nuclear power plant operators are actually people with just a high school diploma who spent 2-4 years of intensive training to learn how to safely operate a nuclear reactor, but they make around $100,000 - $150,000 a year. He said that what most people say about the work is it's a mix of 99% boredom and 1% terror. (Boredom for the endless hours when the reactor is running properly, terror for the "holy shit oh god what's happening" moments).

Although the pay scale certainly looks sexy I think the boredom would quickly turn my mind to mush. I think I would probably prefer making less for a job that I enjoyed more. What I am really interested in is the development of more efficient nuclear fission power plants, or my dream of developing nuclear fusion power plants.

Nuclear fusion is what happens in the sun!

Another interesting fact we learned was that since nuclear power plants have built in automatic safety features, the whole meltdown at Three Mile Island could have been avoided if the plant operators had simply done NOTHING. That's right, it was their intervening that made the situation turn into a disaster. Poor guys, they probably felt like idiots.

But then I thought, isn't Homer Simpson a nuclear power plant operator? Why are the Simpsons usually portrayed as a poor family if reactor operators are supposed to make a lot of money? After running a quick google search I have determined that Homer is in fact a "safety techinician", not an "reactor operator".

Hour long Dota game before bed

Just finished an hour long Dota game. I played Enchantress. My team succeeded through most of the whole game but we epic failed at the end. We had an Ursa warrior who could of won us the game but was never with us so he would get disabled like no other.

Finally the situation was this: They had destroyed both our mid and bottom lane barracks, and only top lane barracks remained. We had only destroyed the enemies middle barracks. At this point I'm thinking the best option is for us all to push top, because this will prohibit the enemy team from easily going for the hat trick and getting mega-creeps. A Necrolyte on my team actually followed me and helped push top, but the rest all did nothing helpful. Finally we all lost a big team fight and the enemy quickly won.

But seriously, after an hour long game at 2 in the morning I hardly care about winning or losing, I'm just happy to be done playing. It just goes to show that you must have solid teamwork above all else, even if you're above the enemy players in gold and experience.

And yes Omni, Dota is fun, and I still prefer it to League of Legends. ;)

Today's post is going to be short because I don't have much time (a midterm tonight and a paper due tomorrow), but here we go:

So I've recently been playing League of Legends with my roommate quite frequently, since he and another person in our hall both enjoy playing it. Currently the champion he plays the most of is named "Lee Sin - The blind monk". We discovered something silly the other day while fighting an enemy Teemo. Although Lee Sin is noticeably blind (that blind fold and all), he's still able to become "blinded" by spells like Teemo's blinding darts.

I love silly little things in games like this.

Should companies be penalized for outsourcing jobs?

My assignment for my critical argument and discourse class is to write a debate speech on whether or not companies should out source jobs. I have already chosen a side to this issue, but I would like to hear what you guys think.

When US companies outsource jobs to India or China, it is making business sense to them because they are paying less for workers. The minimum wage is much lower in other countries than the US. They benefit from this practice, especially in the case of manufacturing. However, the act of outsourcing labor also hurts the people looking to find jobs in the labor market here at home, though, and some believe that we should penalize companies that do this, in order to persuade them to bring more of their business home. A solution to this problem would be to tax them more heavily, or on the other hand, offer tax cuts to companies who are not outsourcing workers, again to promote them to keep their business in the US.

What do you guys think? What are your opinions on outsourcing? I'd love to hear as many takes on this issue as I could, thank you.

In other news, my Monday went well, for a Monday and all. I have a very busy schedule this week, including two midterms and multiple assignments. I'll post again soon, thanks for following my blog. :)

I for one am pleased to be living in the age of information. It's very nice to be able to self educate yourself on anything in the blink of an eye. For example today I was doing my nuclear engineering homework. The question was talking about some weird equations and stuff that when I googled it there was only 1 result that was actually relevant, but that result helped me so much. It allowed me to finish my homework without having to contact my professor. It's truly a pleasure to take advantage of free information at your finger tips 24/7, and hard to imagine a world without it.

In other news I had a nice weekend. Spent some time with my friends that go to another school. It was good to see them. We saw the movie "This Means War" which was actually pretty decent. It definitely had some clever and witty moments.

There was, however, one of those ridiculous "did they really just do that" moments. At this exact moment my friend and I turned to each other with that look in our eyes, and both burst out laughing at the sheer improbability of it all. What happened was as follows:

Good guys in cars are getting pursued by bad guys in cars, good guys throw gas filled can toward the enemy car and bulls-eye a shot at it, which immediately ignites it and explodes the bad guys' car.

Someone pulled the fire alarm

So everyone had to go outside at 2 o clock in the morning, wait for the firetrucks to pull up, and then wait for a thorough search of the building to commence. All just because some guy pulled a fire alarm. But I was still up. I was up playing Minecraft, working on the underwater fortress project. Feels good to know that I didn't have climb out of bed to get dressed, I was already good to go, unlike almost everyone else on my floor!

My eardrums are still ringing. I should go to sleep, it's about 4am here, lol. Night night
