My last weekend in Sedgefield

After 5 weeks of living with the in-laws in Sedgefield I'll finally be moving back to York this coming Friday into my all new house. I should be really looking forward to this but I kind of feel a bit numb, maybe I've developed a form of Stockholm syndrome and enjoy some kind of perverse pleasure from being stuck in a spare room, driving an hour and a half to work each day, not being able to watch what I want on TV, and not having WIFI.
I very definitely and seriously now believe I can fully empathise with Anne Frank now. Look, I even have a diary (you're reading it now!!!!)
I think the trepidation comes from knowing that I'm in for an anticlimax having already gone through stages of anxiety, despair, boredom, hunger, thirst and finally ennui.

Most importantly my new house will have a driveway which means off street parking, which means I can spunk a load of money away on buying a new car, unfortunately it turns out the car I've chosen has 1 of the more odious advertising campaigns of all time, clearly aimed at full-time arseholes:

I'm tired, I'm hungry, and I demand some booze. think I might start the weekend with a little drink of the wine. Shame there's nothing decent to watch on TV, currently stuck with Poirot on itv3. I could try to finish watching Hobo With a Shotgun but what I watched of it last night I thought was pretty shit, definitely no Machete, which itself wasn't exactly 'the best film ever'

it's that I didn't post about Trish Keenan passing away last month.

I first heard Broadcast when I was in the last term of my last year at uni on Jon Peel's show, unbelievably almost 11 years ago now. I followed everything they did since then but unfortunately missed seeing them live, but not for lack of trying.

Browsing the Warp site I came across an ad for the DVD of This Is England 86. I've always been a massive fan of Shane Meadows, especially A Room For Romeo Brass, which is still one of my favourite films, so was keen to see what he would do with TIE86. In honesty it did very little for me. A more appropriate title might have been "This Is Acting", half the scenes felt so self conscientious and hammy you could picture everyone getting pats on the back at their workshop. Bor-ing! Perhaps Meadows should have made 'This is Mexico '86', hand of God, Mexican wave, much more interesting.

I've shown this blog some neglect in the past but looking at the stats I only managed 19 post in the whole of last year. This I blame on twitter and facebook, both of which have been a complete waste of time and have provided zero value. I used to actually enjoy trying to knock out a few words on here so maybe I should resume, it might give my life some kind of purpose.

For some reason this morning I've had that fucken Justin Bieber song 'baby, baby, baby' going round and round my head endlessly, and the only way to get rid has been to put my headphones on and listen to the new remaster of NIN's Pretty Hate Machine, which sounds pretty brilliant, almost like hearing some of the tracks for the first time again. Yep, Bieber truly gone. Other listening stuff that I got hold of at the weekend that is going to keep my head nice clear today includes Teen Dream by Beach House, new Kanye West (on first impressions I don't think it's going to top 808s ..), Atlas Sound home demos, and the new David Lynch single.

So we had a pretty good time last night at Pivni in York with some friends and I proved to myself that I can have a few drinks without taking it too far and act like an alcoholic with behavioural problems.
My only complaint really was with the jukebox. Soon after getting there I fed it some change (£1 for 4 songs, + 30p for 1 more) and carefully selected a playlist that was bound to please no one but me, then I waited. And waited. And waited. And it turned out the music for the evening had been hijacked by a succession of dickheads with no taste courtesy of the generous rate of 11 songs for £2. Why would anyone choose to put Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene exclusively on in public for over an hour? Madness I say

I wish I was a little more organised. At lunchtime today I did an on-line order for Tesco to deliver my groceries tomorrow night, for for me eh? But I'd forgotten that I have no food in the house, my woman has been out at work today so won't have anything for me to eat, and I have to go out to a piano lesson 1/2 an hour after I get back. All this means is that I'm going to have to eat a pack of 4 minute instant noodles I've just dug out from the back of my drawer here at work that I keep in case of emergencies.

I feel slightly mean just for saying that I didn't love the new Studio Ghibli picture, Ponyo, but I just didn't. not that it was in anyway bad, it just didn't live up to some of their better films. Perhaps this time around they aimed more squarely at the childrens market rather than family friendly fantasy that they've done before. That said, it was less boring than Tales From Earthsea. Don't know whether the time of day affected my enjoyment seeing as I had to go to a screening at 9:10am Saturday morning

I had a happier cinema going experience today with a preview screening of Micmacs. Well worth catching when it's released, esp. if you liked Jeunet's earlier films.
