Note Repeat in FL Studio, just like an MPC!

The note repeat function on Akai MPCs allows you to trigger a sampler at an interval you chose just by holding down a pad; you hold down a pad, a hihat plays eighth notes or whatever. I'm pretty sure that some midi pad controllers from Akai can do this, just by sending a bunch of note messages when you hold down the pad, but if you have a pad controller that can't do this, there's still a way. The Korg Padkontrol's roll function can sort of do this, but it kind of sucks.

To do this in FL Studio, I'm going to use a layer with the FPC and a normal sampler channel as children. In the normal sampler channel, I've put a sample of a hihat in, and set the root note and note range to the note that corresponds to the pad I want to use for the hihat. What? Well, the pad I want to use on the Padkontrol sends out F#4 notes when I hit it. Since both the FPC and sampler channel are being controlled by the layer, both of them will recieve all of the notes from the Padkontrol. By left-clicking F#4 on the keyboard in the channel settings window, it will only respond to F#4, and then by right clicking F#4, I make sure it plays at the right pitch. If you screw up, there's a reset button in the MISC tab.
Now that I'm triggering the hihat with the right pad, I can set it to repeat. In the FUNC tab of the sampler, turn the arpeggiator on. I don't think it matters which mode (ascending, descending...) you use, since it's only going to be playing one note. Set the CHORD to (none), this is pretty important. Set the TIME knob until it's playing the speed you want, .and you're done, pretty much. Put some drum sounds into the FPC, make sure you have the Layer selected, and play away. If you really want to, you could make another sampler channel on a different note for a double time hihat or something.
Usually, I just play the hihats normally with my Padkontrol, but this could be fun, especially with super fast buzzing samples all over the place. Here's a zipped loop file, if you don't have a Padkontrol, you'll have to edit it.

In my quest to find a suitable way to embed audio files in this blog, I thought that soundclick would be the best way. Blogger told me that I could upload video and image files, but not audio, and that I'd have to find somewhere else and probably pay out the nose to host my audio files, and that it hated me for suggesting it. You probably didn't notice that the soundclick player got totally frugged up in the feed,
which sucked, and totally screwed it up with huge white spaces all over the place. Frick.

Today I came across 4shared.com, and quickly registered/signed in with my GooglePass whatever thing. I guess all of Google's little friends aren't entirely aware of each other, or Blogger would probably have shown me this. Aaand it looks like I'll be able to stream audio from it. Hopefully this will show streaming audio in the feed, and my blog will pretty much be a podcast, or whatever they call those things.
Actually, they won't let me link directly to the mp3 files, and embedding them slows everything down, sooo I'll keep looking. Maybe Ripway.com will work. Okay,
Ripway.com and the yahoo media player works pretty good. I should probably just find some free hosting site to put this on, but that sort of thing falls under the "I'll do it later when I actually have money." category.

Today, I decided to go through all the old projects that I haven't worked on in a while. Usually I'll leave old things behind to work on something new every week or so, sometimes more frequently than that. Anyways, I opened one song up, and it seemed to be from my "slap Guitar Rig on everything" phase from a week or so ago. The beat needed a bit of variation, and since it was a beat I had made before and chopped up in a slicer channel, I just started rearranging some of the chops and making them shorter. It ended up with a sort of 'skipping cd' sound, which is okay.

Taking Guitar Rig off of some things revealed how cheesy the sounds were, which I thought was hilarious. The lame supersaw synth was put through a Love Filter (philter?), with a bunch of looping envelopes controlling cutoff frequencies and whatever else before going into Guitar Rig.

Crappy Bass

Today I tried to make a better bass sound than yesterday's failure. I decided to mix something from Thor with some noises from the PAIA Fatman!

Right now, it's enclosed in a cardboard box, and moving it inevitably broke some of it's guts. Sooo, pull out the sodering iron again. There was one wire hanging that was disconnected from...wherever it was connected to before, and instead of going through all the schematics and everything else trying to see where it was supposed to go, I just put soldered to wherever it looked like it should go. One end was still connected sketchily to a leg of one of the opamp IC's, sooo I guessed that it was part of the filter mode mod, and soldered it to the corresponding switch.
After all this stress, it was making sounds again! Strangely, the oscillators were making this little clicking sound when tuned apart, sort of sounded like they were hard-synced, although the hard-sync switch was off. I'm not too worried, I'm going to do some more mods, fix everything and put it in a proper case when I, you know, get a job.

I was trying to make a cool bass sound yesterday, with lots of timestretching, resampling and crossfading... but it turned out sounded really out of tune, so I guess I'll try again today, probably with some comb filters in Thor, but I don't know.

I downloaded version 1.4 of Akaizer, a vintage timestretch/pitchshift lofi soundbadizer which can open files directly from FL Studio(!!!). Lots of fun crossfading sounds and resampling in edison. Here's a screenshot just for fun.
