Joann at Starbucks, where she usually hangs out

She and I have always lived parallel lives. We’re the same height, same complexion. She’s skinnier than I, due to all the walking she does and all the eating I do. My husband can cook his socks off and the last 34 years of delicious meals are finally showing up on my butt, my thighs and in my face. Her hair used to be so pretty, naturally curly and jet black. Now, it’s got specks of grey, and is not as pretty; actually it’s matted in places, big clucks of hair are sticking together. I’ve gone from natural twists, to an afro, to braids, to a long weave, then a short weave – my goal always the same! Keep my butt out of some crazy hair dresser’s chair who doesn’t respect my time, but loves my money! Joann probably just couldn’t keep hers up.

She’s not my best-friend but I love her. 10 years and we’ve never had an argument. That must be some kind of record. I look forward to seeing her on Saturday mornings at Starbucks, although our visits are always short. She usually has her eyes closed when I come in. I speak softly to wake her; always saying first, " Hi, Joann," my eyes lighting up like the silver ornaments on a Christmas tree because I’m so happy to see her. She smiles back, softly, like a kind hearted woman lives inside who has extra time and lots of money to burn. That’s what I believed in the beginning, silly me. She told me she was waiting on a trust fund to be released.

That’s when she used prance up and down Ventura Blvd in pretty dresses, and I would always see her. I was impressed with her stride. I’m a tall girl and love pretty dresses too, especially the ones that show a good set of legs. Jo Ann and I both have nice legs. I like dresses that swivel a little bit in a festive way like it’s made for a dancer. I love to dance. Jo Ann wears the same kind. Don’t know if she can dance. I remember her name because it’s the same as my sister-in-law. During the first couple of years that we knew each other, I would forget. But not anymore. Joann, Joann, Joann. She’s African American like me. We’re probably the same age. We’re both loners. I like being alone, except sometimes my husband is with me on Saturday mornings.

Let’s see what else have I done with my friend JoAnn. Once I sat on the bus stop with her a long time, when I noticed she was no longer wearing those pretty dresses. I needed to know why.
"People think something is wrong with me. They think I’m crazy walking up and down the street in dresses," she said.
"Wow," I never thought about that," I said as I had an Oprah Aha moment.
"When I’m in my dirty and dark clothes, people leave me alone," Joann said smugly, proud that she’d figured out how to get rid of jerks.
Jama Juice, I’ve visited her there once also, and I guess that’s it.

I’m proud of my city of Sherman Oaks. At first I wasn’t so sure about this place, coming from an all Black area in Los Angeles where I raised my kids, living in the same house for 18 years. I was sure that it was the most beautiful part of Los Angeles with its sweeping views from the Ocean to South Central. But the valley has turned out to be pretty nice – south of the Blvd, that is! Hate to be snobby like that, but I don’t like the rest of the Valley, really. My old neighborhood had the prettiest hills and views of the city. South of the Blvd, I can climb a hill to Mulholland and look down over the valley. But the other part of the valley is flat as a pancake. Lots of Hollywood stars live out here too. This makes me feel out of place a bit. Sometimes they’re friendly, sometimes they’re not. And Black people don’t speak to one another in the valley and I find that strange. Their eyes hop around when they see you coming. In my old neighborhood, I could count on a "How you doing, sister?" from time-to time.

But I like others in the valley. The people in Starbucks let Joann stay as long as she wants and that’s why I think valley people are nice. But not the church ones necessarily. Sherman Oaks Lutheran church, I’m mad at them folks. They used to fix Joann a blanket pallet and let her sleep outside of their locked gates and this made me really, really mad. So one day I walked up there – me with my bold self – and asked to speak to the bishop, priest , or whatever they call Mr. Man of God in charge. He was a tall white man. I didn’t like what he said. I asked him why they locked their gates at night and made a pallet for her to sleep outside. He said because there’s been poor people since the beginning of time and there’s nothing we can do about it. "Sure there is," i said indignantly.

Then to prove my point I frantically drove up and down Ventura blvd looking for Joann and when I found her, I hopped out my – I’m ashamed to say, new Range Rover – and begged Joann to come and live with me. She said no and it was a good thing in a way because I hadn’t cleared it with my husband and three sons. Don’t know what I would have done if she would have said yes.
A few more years passed . It’s funny how time marches on. I’m still here She’s still there on Ventura Blvd, and this time, I tell my husband and my sons that if I can talk her into it, I’m bringing Joann home to live with us. Their eyes protrude. Eight eyeballs are popped out looking at me as they shake their heads, back and forth. "Nooooooooooo." I’m so mad
because more than anything I want my sons to care about others, especially those who are less fortunate than them.

But that was then and this is now. They’re off in college actually 2 finished college and are just off. It’s been almost 12 years since Joann and I met. I am still here by the Grace of God; the Sheriff didn’t cart me off in foreclosure like they did so many others during the deep depression. It’s funny how life hops around and skips over folks. But still it all hurts so badly, foreclosures, abused kids, people who don’t have all that they need, homeless people. It all makes me so sad. I wonder why Joann is homeless. I know how I got here. Had a smart Mama who went to school and got her a Ph.D. There was never a question mark. I would go to college and make something of myself. Same with my sons. We moved here to take care of my Mom when the doctor said we should concentrate on having fun in her last years as she was battling cancer. Better move on cause talking about my Mama still makes me sad.

Anyway, today was going to be an easy Saturday morning after the holidays. I had stuff to do and wanted to start with a Starbucks coffee. As soon as I opened the door to Starbucks, I spotted Joann. I felt really, really happy to see her. Maybe cause I knew I was going to be there a long time and I was glad I would have good company. The line was almost out the door. Joann’s eyes were closed when I came in. There were people all around her; two men on lap tops, two women on the other side. It seemed like everybody had brought their kids this morning and that made me a bit disgusted. I prefer a quiet Star Bucks experience. I love my boys but I'm done raising kids. Yeah!

I whispered, "Hi Joann." I didn’t want to startle her. Her eyes popped open and she smiled and my insides started to warm. I took a deep breath and let out a sigh as I smiled back. "Can you believe this line?" I asked. I don’t have to think of clever things to say to Joann. Our relationship is easy. She chuckled and said, "You came at the wrong time. I know, it’s really, really long." She could also understand why I wasn't moving from the line to come over to talk to her like I usually do. The men beside her continued to ignore her and now me. I wondered how they do that. A few people softened their faces. I asked how she’d been and she responded with her usual. "I’m doing fine." When a lady walked up behind me, I asked her to hold my place, and I popped out of line and went over to Joann. I fished in my purse. I had an extra $20.00 so I gave it to her. Not enough, I know. We locked eyes, I told her where I lived again. "I am on ____directly next to the___; it’s a two story house. Knock on my door at any time. You can come and stay with me any time you want. I mean it." I rambled for the um-tenth time. I’d written my phone number down a 100 times so I just didnt bother this time. She always takes it, folds it neatly, and places it in her purse. She always carries a nice purse. But then she never calls me. After 10 years, you’d think I’d be mad. But I’m not.

I just want anyone reading this who can help me get her moved in a permanent place, not a temporary shelter, to message me. Time is marching on, and I don’t’ know how long I’ll be here and how much longer JoAnn can prance up and down the street. It's been 10 long years. I love her so much

I am not Adam Lanza’s mother

I am a mother of three sons and my oldest, age 28, has had every diagnosis imaginable, including Autism. I have never seen research associating Autism with the propensity for violence. He is my angel. It was my journey of coming to grips with having a son with a disability that caused me to look so deep within that I, myself, was diagnosed with depression and my only escape was to write my own answer to this life challenge. The answer required me to open my heart so wide that I identified with every mother struggling to raise a family, every mother brokenhearted from trying to provide the best for their child, every woman who felt alone, like I had, in their struggles of life, and every child who did not measure up to the world’s expectations of him or her. Over the years as I continued to reach up and out of my pain, I founded Sisters Supporting Sisters, a 501 (c) (3).

In 1992, when my oldest was turning 8 years old, I accepted that he would never go to college and realize the dreams of success that I held for him, like every mother dreams for her first-born son. The riots had occurred in Los Angeles earlier that year and the smell of smoke still lingered. The anger and confusion in the city had almost resulted in the city burning down. It was a depressing time and the riots were a mirror of what was going on in our individual lives, I believe.

I asked God to help me make sense of the pain and depression that I felt from living in a world with people whose values were misplaced and misguided. Material wealth and comfort were what I and all my friends sought to achieve. We wanted to live in the perfect house, drive the perfect SUV, have our sons and daughters attend the perfect schools. We wanted the American dream surrounded with a white Pickett fence and perfect children behind the closed doors. Today those same types of folks make speeches on Facebook and count how many likes they get.

But my course would change. One evening during the Christmas season in 1992 I had a “come to Jesus” moment. It was after the old dull ache of pain on the inside from having misguided values and spending too much time with people who valued the wrong thing manifested on the outside. I thought I was having a stroke, but the doctors said nothing was wrong, although I felt pain throughout my body. After that appointment, God became my doctor, the bible my prescription. I vowed to always reach up and out of my pain and depression and grasp Jesus’ hand. I vowed to SHOUT -- Shine, Have Hope, Overcome, Use God’s Power and Take Charge – for my son, myself, and all the women and children, unknown to me at the time, that I listed above. I would serve, sometimes at shelters, then for 10 years while teaching, and finally in my own non-profit.

With that vow of dedication still resonating in my heart, I re-launched Sisters Supporting Sisters this year with a theater piece, Voices of the Un-Heard. See the flyer below. I wept, uncontrollably, with others at the end of its offering, as I caught of glimpse of my oldest beaming from the audience, and I beckoned him to join me on the stage. In 1993, I understood that my child with special needs would need me to be a constant source of joy, light, and love; the umbilical cord between he and I never severed, but, in fact, extended to the world. I would accept that he was perfect just the way he was. I would share his perfection with others every chance I got. He would beam like he did on November 4^th, 2012 as Mommy offered Voices of the Un-Heard to others. Afterwards, I would turn my attention to collecting clothing and toys for women and children in area shelters. Those items were delivered this week.

Over the years, I ordered his dad to get rid of all the guns in the house. He, too, at one time was a gun enthusiast. I’ve always hated guns. Whenever I looked at an instrument that could take the life of another I got chills up my spine. For the last 28 years, I journeyed through the maze of mothering a son with Autism: Medication changes, doctor’s appointments, episodes, meetings with school officials, psychologist, specialist and more. I would always seek mainstream inclusive opportunities for my son. I endured the ignorant stares when my son said or did something inappropriate. I either overlooked folks or put them in their place when they made stupid comments or jokes about people with disabilities. I cringed when people used the word Retarded or shared ignorant “yellow bus” jokes. I moved to an area in the San Fernando Valley where people walk to local eateries. Here my son can safely and independently walk to get his favorite treats of Starbucks, Cold Stones, and Jamba Juice. I always invite friends to SHOUT with me, for me, my son, women, at-risk kids, and young adults with disabilities. I let joy, love, and light surround us on our special journey of life!

We had one life and death situation. He walked off and got lost for three days. God, prayers from Psalm 91, and a friend who offered to help me search for him brought him home safely. This same friend was the first to donate when I re-launched Sisters Supporting Sisters. I could never bear the burden of raising a son with a disability alone. If you read any of my books, there’s a disabled child. In my blog, you will find entries about my journey of being a mother with a special needs child. In Voices of the Un-Heard, there is a character struggling with raising an Autistic child. When we return in spring, a developmentally delayed actress is joining the cast. Sisters Supporting Sisters’ mission is to also inspire and support young adults with disabilities. I do it all because God saved me and my son when my spirit was crushed in 1992. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. We must get rid of the guns in our society and return to being a society of love and peace. Happy Holidays!

The title of this piece is deceiving because it's actually about loving a Black man. But because I believe before a woman can love a man, she must love herself, the piece ends with all the things I love about Black women.

Excerpt from SHOUT! Lessons of Hope for Tough Times

     In fact, I’ve been in a state of gratefulness about loving and living with four Black men for years. When I drop off my youngest son at college, I say to him, “I am the luckiest woman in the world to get to love and be loved by four Black men.” He kisses me good bye as he whispers, “Yes you are.” To me loving our men and children is my most important task as a Black woman. Raising our children peacefully with love and gently guiding them is the most important task of a Black woman if she’s lucky enough to be a mother.

     We Black Women are so adept at seeing the good in the bad, gliding through life’s ups and down, so gracefully. We are the Harriet Tubmans who endured slavery and led our people north, and the sweet Rosa Parks who refused to sit on the back of the bus. We are versatility: From mothers, to corporate sisters and CEOs to scientist, teachers and pastors.

     My big mama was soft-spoken and gentle, yet very strong. I understand that the struggles we go through -- being single moms, working our butts off, balancing families and work, living and providing for our loved ones on a shoe-string budget – can sometimes make us tough as nails. I understand the strength that we need to survive our daily struggles and how hard it is to keep our frustrations bottled up inside. So sometimes it shows on the outside and we’re seen as mean and tough when really we’re strong and focused.

     But in the stillness of the night, during our prayer time, we can transform ourselves. We can ask God to lift our burdens and soften our touch and words, so that we can float through life as loving, sweet, soft angels, strong as nails on the inside, manifesting as the sweet women of God that we are on the outside.

What's the Will of God in Your Life?

We all throw around these two words: "God's Will." But do we really understand what His will is for our lives? Do we really know the first step of walking in His Will? How do we discern if we're on the right path and in the flow of it.

It's an important season. 2012 is a phenomenal year, God is moving. Let's get it right. I've been studying the subject and reading scriptures about God's will. I found wonderful articles written by renowned scholars that I will share soon.

10 Things to Do when Life is Overwhelming

Sometimes life can be overwhelming. Sometimes we have to put all of our burdens down and trust that God will bring us through a particularly difficult season. There's no reasoning, bargaining,or manipulating our way out. It is what it is, and we must go through it. It may feel like we're being assaulted from all directions, and we may not want to answer the phone or read the next text for fear that we'll receive yet more bad news. So what should we do?

   1) Wave a white flag to the heavens, surrender, and shout, "Help Me God:)".

     2) Be confident that God is with us in our weakest moment.

                   And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you,
                     for My Strength is made perfect in weakness.
    2 Corinthian 12:9:

     3) Release all emotions and reactions to the things happening
     around us. Trust that God is in control, and He is doing a perfect work in
     the difficult circumstances

                      And we know that in all things God works for the good of those
                      who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
      Romans 8:28

     4) Love everyone and everything as best you can:

                     So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three;
                     but the greatest of these is love.
                     1 Corinthians 12:13

     5) If we have no love to give, take a time out, lock up in a room, if
           need be, go for a stroll, or to a local Starbucks for our favorite drink.
          Try not to unleash angry or fearful emotions on others.

     6). Hold On. This challenging season will pass.

                     every event under heaven

           Positive change and miracles, I believe, happen in peaceful spaces.

     10) Talk and laugh with someone; love on a pet, animal, or baby and; enjoy nature,
             even if it's something as simple as watering the grass or flowers, because help is
            on the way!

     I write this for you, but it is ministering to me because this is where I, surprisingly, find myself. I'd hope to be writing something catchy, short, fun, and happy. But on Sunday we learned that my hubby's 39 year old niece made her transition after battling breast cancer, news that came on the heels of losing a college buddy at the end of May.

    Before getting the call about Tasha, I had been in my own private struggle with my oldest son, who is Autistic, very bright and high-functioning, and has been refusing to take the medication that keeps him calm and agreeable on his unique journey of life.  He's the son that I refer to as my angel because of his sensitivity and sweetness, despite his challenges. Yet, in the last two months, there have been few traces of the sweet, loving young man who led me to write my first story and book to make sense of the contradictory and incongruent nature of life.  He's improving, but he and I have been in the most intense, protracted difficult season that I ever recall us having, other than the time he got turned around on an outing and was missing for three (3) days.  But that frightening nightmare ended in 72 hours. It's been nearly two months with me having to stay by his side, pretty much. It's been exhausting and not very fun!

Please watch the quick video of my son there, and click on the U.S. Government's Disability link, which has wonderful information about ways in which we all can make life easier for people with disabilities.

      And, let's see, what else: Too much to write here, but my middle son had a little accident; thankfully, no one was hurt, but it still jeered Mommy's nerves. There was a call from my hubby saying that he was stranded on the freeway after having a flat tire. No problem, really, I went to his rescue with the Triple A card that he had forgotten.  While waiting for the tow truck, I had to use the bathroom, and the nearest place was Forest Lawn Cemetery, the place where our beloved Michael Jackson is buried. So I smiled at the guard at the gate, skipped in, and joyfully greeted all the people working inside, while thanking God out loud in the bathroom a few seconds later that I was alive and kicking on my trip there. Haha, finally a chuckle for this piece.

        Two weeks later there was an expensive car break-down that was not in the budget. There were two other phone calls with news of death: An old high school friend that I hadn't seen since high school, and the mother-in-law of a close friend. Both calls gave me reason to pause and feel sadness.

       Add all of the above to the everyday responsibilities of being an adult, wife, a woman transitioning, professionally, (a Renaissance woman who is, literally, carving my way in stone as a writer, blogger, voice of inspiration, and playwright), a mother of three sons and two dogs, and overwhelming feelings can surface.

       But by going through the list above, I write this today with a peaceful smile on my face. I know that in spite of appearances, all is well with my life. I am so grateful. I am trusting God! May God's grace and peace be with you, always.

                                                          LET'S HAVE SOME FUN

      After losing a college friend, I begin encouraging fellow college alumni to have a reunion party. I think it's a sad sign of the times when people only come together at funerals. But it's been close to impossible to get folks excited about the idea, which has led me to add to this blog. I am adding the motto:  Let's have fun. Not big fancy, red carpet, 5-star chandelier dangling fun -- I'm not in that crowd -- but simple, old fashion and cheap fun: Kelly House Fun! I've written a post entitled "Chill-the-Heck-Out" that I can't wait to share when it's ready.   Until then, ask yourself when's the last time you?

      1) Went for a walk in a park or rode a bicycle

      4) Gave or attended a party where folks danced on furniture or all night long
      5) Laughed so hard you started crying
      6) Talked on the phone with a friend for hours about nothing at all.

      10) Popped a bottle of champagne.
      11) Got loose in Vegas

      15) Been tickled or tickled someone else.

Let’s stay inspired on this bumpy road of life!

An Email I sent about this season::

Goodness what a difference a month can make. After I lost my buddy John Caldwell, Esq., on May 18th, I went through it! First I lost all my words and didn’t have anything to say to anybody which led me to write a short post about silence. Next I got sick with the nastiest flu-bug I’ve had in 10 years which meant I had to climb in bed. While there, I got the Blues, so I blogged about “Staring Down the Blues.” After getting up, I still felt weak, out of balance, and needed to be gentle with myself and allow my mind to wonder, so I blogged about "Open Spaces needed to Create." And, finally, when I was able to say, “I’m back” and truly mean it – I’m not one to fake it-- I blogged about "Sturdy Book Ends and Friends" needed to help me hold it together. Sturdy Book Ends and My Friends!

At one of my first book signing, I received a set of stone elephant book ends that held the books on display just perfectly. They were designed in a L shape, wide bottom, and long back to stand on their own. With these book ends, I didn’t have to worry about books falling all over the place and my display table was orderly and attractive.

I now think of my family and friends as my sturdy book ends. They are solid as a rock, sturdy, standing on their own, and help me keep all the stuff that life throws my way in order and in perspective. From death, to job loss, to financial woes, and heart break, having a good friend or family member to turn to can make all the difference. My guys are always there for me, but I also have wonderful sister-friends in my life. Today I would like to introduce you to three who have recently enriched my life.

The Birthday Girl: Ms. Simone Blake

We all need a friend who answers, “Yes,” when we’re ready to get out for some girlfriend time, and Simone is my girl. Simone and I love plays and all things that will make us better women. She always has a encouraging word and even noticed that I had lost a few pounds when I saw her on our last play date. I love people who are positive and not afraid to encourage others. She works for one of the studios in business development but also has a couple of creative pieces that she’s manifesting. I’m holding her to this!

The spiritualist: Mrs. Kim Todd-Tullos

Ms. Kim is a Lay Person Speaker at United Methodist Church in Sherman Oaks and introduced me to this wonderful jewel of a congregation. She SHOUTS because God excites her and her enthusiasm is infectious.  I love folks who get excited about life and GOD.   She inspires me to stay fired up!

Open Spaces needed to Create

OPEN SPACES TO CREATE!

I grew up in the South where there was plenty of open space, both literally and figuratively. Time to just sit on a front porch and wait for cars to go by, time to talk about nothing in particular to a friend, or time to play may favorite game of Jacks. There was time in the evenings to play kick ball, while grand parents sat on porches above the street looking on, and time to chase lightning flies when the sun went down.

Nothing was hurried and rushed. Life moved very slowly! You didn’t concern yourself with what others were doing because there was no Internet, email, twitter, or facebook. You couldn’t worry about what you didn’t know existed. And when I begin to write in the early 90s, I duplicated the open spaces of my childhood. I was in England, and the English country side provided lots of rolling green pastors. I took long car rides with the windows down and just allowed my mind to wonder. I stayed in castles transformed into quaint bed and breakfast nooks with less than a dozen guests. When I went into the city of London, I sat quietly in coffee shops, watching and listening to the conversations of others, as I had few friends there. It was a peaceful time.

Now, it’s is time for me to write to finish some projects, and I find that I long for open spaces, where my mind can peacefully wonder, not thinking about what anyone in the Universe is doing, except my immediate family and friends, who are, usually, just a phone call away.

I love blogging. I love facebook and twitter. But although I love the new technology, I find it crowds my mind with too much information and robs me of the solitude and peace needed to create. So it’s time for me to unplug so that I can move some projects forward and meet my end-of-the year deadline. If you don’t hear from me for short spells, just know that I’m sitting in an open space. I am cherishing a quiet and peaceful moment and bursting with new creative passion.

I love you and pray that you’ll find plenty of open spaces in your busy world and fill them with peace!

A SHOUT for JOHN MORGAN CALDWELL, JR.

Well, Bruins, God works in mysterious ways. On Wednesday of last week, I started a virtual inspirational SHOUT (Shine, Have Hope, Overcome, Use God's Power, and Trust God) on my blog, not knowing that instead of inspiring others, I would be preparing myself for the news I would receive on Friday about John Morgan Caldwell, Jr. When the phone rang, I was working on Saturday’s blog and up to the U, “Using God's Power.” But before I could put the words on the page, I ended up on my knees weeping because my buddy had passed. Once I was able to pull myself up, I wondered, “How could I possibly write about “Using God’s Power” when I felt so weak.

Within moments, I was reliving the last six months with John. In late October or early November, I received a phone call from my friend Lori, saying that John was refusing dialysis and that he was tired of fighting for his life. She was at Cedars with him, and I asked her to put him on the phone. She did, and because I was driving on the freeway and there was no time to mess around, I told him with a clear, firm voice, “You are the anointed one; you have so much to give to this world. God needs you. We need you. We all love you. I know you’re tired, but rest, and let’s get on with it. I’ll be there in a little bit.” He didn’t respond, and I hung up and made plans to get to Cedars as soon as possible. I’m told he put everyone out the room when we hung up. When I finally arrived at Cedars later that evening, I wasn’t surprised that his room and the hallway surrounding it were full of people.

Still, I darn near climbed in his bed for a hug, as he whispered, “Life ain’t been no bruin walk, Meme.” I whispered back, “I know, John. It’s been tough on many of us, especially during the great recession.” I didn’t know what to say to give John Hope, but God led me to talk about Mom, a Ph.D. educator, and former Superintendent of Compton Unified school district. John was always proud of her and that she was my Mom. As many of you reading this know, he loved high achievers, and my mother had overcome incredible health challenges. So I said, “32 years she battled cancer, John. You must keep up the fight. I’m here today and made it to UCLA because she did not give up:” Both breast removed, parts of her thyroid removed, countless rounds and years of chemotherapy, and radiation scorching her body, yet she never gave up. He listened and didn’t argue with me that night. I knew he understood that he had to fight for life.

John was one of the first people I met when my Mom dropped me off at Rieber Hall in the summer of 1977. He and my roommate fell madly in love and were inseparable, and so we spent lots of time together that summer. John was the S in SHOUT! His light was bright. His smile, his stories, his pure joy of life all beamed with brightness and sunshine. It seemed we both believed in fairy tells and happy endings. He had the girl, was the smartest dude in the dorm, and everyone loved him. He was Mr. L.A., sophisticated and witty. Unfortunately, my roommate left UCLA early and we lost contact with her, which meant I became the official historian of "John’s love." For the next four years, he would call on me often to explain to his buddies about his pure romantic side. So although I admired his wit, was in awe of his intelligence, galvanized by his commitment to social causes and community service (he had me in the middle of Westwood and Wilshire protesting Apartheid) The John I knew was all about love!

And that’s all we talked about when I visited him over a dozen times between October, 2011 and May, 2012. I would politely excuse myself when he started “holding court” in his hospital room, showing off his wit and intelligence, because he and I knew that, just like a Barry White song, it was only about LOVE. I would give him a look and he would understand, I believe, why I had to leave the room. I had fallen in love also in Rieber Hall with my college sweetheart: A UCLA basketball player, who was good with John because John loved basketball. We’ve been together for 35 years and have three adult age sons. When John and I were alone, he wanted to know all about my life and whether I was happy. I explained that I was, that having a family and being in love were all I needed. I live a simple life. As a hobby, my husband cooks delicious food for me every night. So while everyone was going to law school, I was happily nursing babies. “I knew then, John, that life was about love. ” I whispered, and he responded, simply, with a smile.

There were so many attorneys and Judges streaming through, I begin to fear that my “John in love” historian skills were not needed, but then she came: Ms. Laquita Hamilton, the woman he fell in love with while in law school at the University of Texas. And, in a flash, my job as John’s love historian was restored. While I was around the two of them, he called after her like a baby boy. And grinned at me as if to say, “I still know how to love, Meme.” He asked me on a couple of occasions, “What I thought about his love for Laquita.” After being in her presence a few times, I was able to offer an opinion: “She’s the one, John. Go for it,” I encouraged. “With love, you can conquer anything.” He wanted to hear more:

As his love historian, I had done my investigation and was ready to give him additional facts: She’s pretty, smart, and got straight As in undergrad. She was admitted to Harvard Law the same time as Barack Obama and a mutual friend tried to get her to go out with him. She wouldn’t because he was not her type. She chose the University of Texas Law School over Harvard because she received a full scholarship. Of course that is where she met John. He was smitten with her when he first met her and she soon decided he was her type and they were inseparable until John returned to California.

“She’s down to earth and loves you, unconditionally,” I rattled off. He was impressed with my investigation. “She and I have a special connection, just like me and Annette, my freshman roommate,” I added for backup. By then, Laquita and I were texting each other like crazy. “She can text an entire manuscript, can’t she” he chuckled. He was back at Cedars and had decided that he had more love to give and receive. I gave him a book, “The Treasures of a Transformed Life.” I told him God is about to use you, so…you need to get close to him

Around the Thanksgiving holiday, I went to the rehab center in Beverly Hills after talking with Laquitta. She had told me that he’d had a rough day and so I decided I would go and just have fun and dance. So we had his buddy Ike switch on the boom box, some oldies but goodies, and I danced and danced until I had worked up a sweat and John had had enough and told us to turn the music down. He also watched me dance for my 40^th birthday. I remember him content, sitting quietly, and watching us dance; Lori, the friend who called initially, and I are born on the same day and so we had a joint 40^th birthday. The John I will always remember was loving and grooving with life. Always ready to serve. But, more importantly, always ready to give love, receive love, and loved watching others dance through life.

Laquita stayed by his side, caring for him at his home, although she lived in Texas, and had to go back and forth a few times to handle her family responsibilities there. I went with him to his first dialysis treatment, and we talked about how he was about to share more with the world. We talked about his writing a book and getting on the speaking circuit. While recuperating and getting stronger, He continued to ponder how he would give to the world and the Los Angeles community when he became stronger. He’d taught Laquitta how to cook and she was there preparing his favorite meals and doing whatever she could to make him happy. The three of us laughed lots during my visits because he was in love and feeling hopeful about life. Unfortunately, we know how this story ends.

After I received the call on Friday, Laquita and I talked and she shared that in his last days, John was thinking seriously about a lay ministry, a way that he could help others with His unique wit, intelligence, street wisdom, and new-found spiritual growth. She was encouraging him to do something that would use his natural ability to connect with people. I’m not sure if he ever read the Treasures of A transformed Life, by United Methodist Minister John Ed Mathison. I can only pray that he did. She recalled that he used a catchphrase when referring to himself. He said he had lead "An Essentially Moral Life" and he wanted to encourage the community he believed he was born to serve to do the same. And we all know John was a highly moral person and good to his core. I believe his final chapter ended on a positive note.

We are all now connected through John, and will come together on Friday to celebrate his life. When we leave, let's continue John's legacy and ask ourselves, “What would John do?” Who would he serve? And, more importantly, who would he have us love?” He loved his buddies, that I know for sure: Jimmy, Ike, Bobby, James, and, Mandla, and they loved him back. I’m sure they’re many more. He loved his Mom and Dad with all his heart. When I arrived at Cedars, he was loving on his sisters, Cherry and Jennifer, whom I hadn’t seen in decades. So he re-introduced me to them, proudly, “These are my sisters,” he said with pure love in his voice and eyes. I could feel that he was proud of their beauty. He was grateful for his secretary, Cynthia. And he finally got to experience a loving relationship with the woman he had talked about for 25 years, Laquita. If you saw the way he smiled at her, you knew his life was complete. They were lovely together and spoke or spent almost every day together since she arrived at Cedars. Yes, we know how this love story ends, but I know he was truly happy and at peace at the end.

Now we’re all connected through John’s love. So I SHOUTED on this past Sunday like I had planned to do when I started the virtual SHOUT on Wednesday. I found the verse that showed me how God’s power works when you’re on your knees, feeling powerless:

"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,

for my power is made perfect in weakness. ”

Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about

my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest

on me."

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)But he said to me,

On Sunday, I would have been up to the T in SHOUT, and had planned to do a fiery blog post about Taking Charge of one’s life, filled with lots of positive affirmations that we’ve all heard before. But, instead, I SHOUTED for John. I went to an exciting church in North Hollywood, and the preacher, Pastor Toure Roberts, gave a prophetic and anointed sermon about living a life on purpose, the only way to live, he said. As I SHOUTED God assured me that John was sitting on God’s right side. He lived on purpose, indeed: Helping others, serving others, mentoring others, and defending his clients. He took it to another level before he left us by just contemplating a Lay Person’s ministry. As for he and I, we were back at Reiber. He was in love, and I was there recording it all, in case he needed to explain his romantic side to his buddies.

The T of SHOUT came: Trusting that all is well with John Morgan Caldwell, Jr. He’s in heaven, and we’re all now connected by his love and asking, “What would John Do? Who would he serve and who would he love?”

YOU ARE THE U and T of SHOUT

(Head tilted back, leg kicked up, knowing that God's Grace & Power will keep us!)

It's a good thing that I don't plan what I'm going to write in advance so that God can have His way with me. I'm writing with a heavy heart after learning that my dear friend, John Caldwell, Esq., passed away on Friday around 2 p.m. The news weakened me and, literally, sent me crashing to the ground. So I asked myself, "How can I write about the U of SHOUT, Using God's Power, when I feel so weak?"

^"But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my
power is made perfect in weakness. ”
Therefore I will boast all the more

gladly about my weaknesses,
so that Christ’s power may rest on me."

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

That's when this Trophy of Grace, which is what I always call myself, understood that He was having His way with me: The scripture above is my favorite, although I didn't plan to use it with the SHOUT this week.

So today, my friend, I'm giving you, through my weakness and tears, the U of SHOUT and the three keys to Using His Power:

1. Surrendering all agendas;
2. Allowing your weaknesses to Shine through, for when you are weakest, His power is perfect;

And, finally, because a SHOUTN woman is clay in God's hand, we don't mind change.

We can change the S to Surrender when we're too weak to Stand and Shine.

Then when we acknowledge that we just don't know what the next day or call will bring, we can change the T to:

3. Trusting Him every step of the way!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

Proverbs 3:5-6

There you have it, my friend. Our SHOUT is complete a day early. Regardless of the news you receive or the circumstances you find yourself in, you must SHOUT! My SHOUT is now filled with tears and grief but I know it's alright. I love you, John. I TRUST GOD!

YOU HAVE THE POWER TO OVERCOME

SHOUT is Powerful. Remember Joshua and the people of Israel knocking down the walls of Jericho with a powerful SHOUT!

When you get to the O in SHOUT, it's time to knock obstacles out of your way and ask:

What should you do when trouble comes?

When you receive a layoff notice;

When folks on your job don't like you;

When you're confused and don't know your purpose;

When Mr. Right is being a jerk and Mr. Wrong keeps showing up; or

When despite your best work and efforts, there's not enough to pay the bills.

Although trouble always looks scary, it comes mostly to grow us from one situation to the next, and, therefore, we should embrace it! So have a quick pity party. Then call your girl-friend and tell her how scared you are, so she can tell you how awful it is. Afterwards put the phone down slowly, breathe, do some yoga, or whatever you do to get your mind still because your next moves will be powerful, and I don't want you to be knocked off your feet:

Whip out these two scriptures:

Do not be anxious for anything, but in every situation, by

prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your request to

God. And the Peace of God, which transcends all understanding,

will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Phillipians 4: 6-8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own

understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall

direct your path.”

Proverbs 3: 5-5.

Next do these 10 things:

1. Surrender and get ready for something new;

2. Don't judge the situation;

3. Trust God (He only wants the best for you);

4. Ask for God's guidance and protection;

5. Read additional scriptures on overcoming;

6. Surround yourself with positive people (Don't call the girlfriend back if she enjoyed your pity party too much!);

7. Fill your heart with love;

8. Forgive any wrongdoing of others and focus on the goodness of Man:);

9. Accept Change, peacefully; and

10. Be open for the infinite possibilities of Life

Now, get ready to SHOUT because you're armed with all that you need to overcome! It doesn't matter what you're facing, how negative it is, or how big the problem is, God will move and take you from where you're kneeling to where He wants you to be. Because you, my friend, are the O in SHOUT!

HOPE!

You are the H in SHOUT if you've ever suffered a spell of unemployment and had to keep on getting up, sending out resumes, and doing what you had to do to provide for yourself and/or your family. You are the H in Hope if a close family member or friend has ever been diagnosed with a terminal illness and you took care of them, visited with them, or prayed for them. And you're definitely the H in Hope if your heart has ever been broken and all you could do was trust that it would continue ticking in spite of the excruciating pain you felt.

In the worst of circumstances, God shows up to give you Hope to continue on:

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.

When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.

When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up;

the flames will not consume you.

Isaiah 43:2

      In the best of circumstances, when you're thriving and doing what you're suppose to do, He shows up with Hope that you will have the strength to live in this complicated world:

                     But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
                     with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not
                     faint.
                    Isaiah 43:2

      And when you're in the middle, not knowing if the relationship, job, or situation are the best for you, God shows up with Hope and Peace:

                  When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.

There are no mistakes in this universe, and your life is precious because God wanted you here on earth at this very moment and time. So Laugh, Love, Forgive, and Shine your light. The light illumined from your smile can attract Mr. or Ms. Right, warms the hearts of friends and family, turns enemies into allies, and uncovers a divine path! So Shine, Shine, Shine!
