International conference, Leiden University, 15 > ->  17 February 2012

The conference 'Cultures of Anatomical Collections' will explore anatomical preparations and collections (preparations of human material as well as wax and other models) as important parts of cultural heritage.
This means that we treat them in a similar way as we would examine other historical artifacts stored in today's museum. Although the history of anatomy and anatomical illustrations has been a popular topic in the history of medicine during the last decade, the history of its material remains has been somewhat neglected. And yet, in particular when taking into account recent historiographies of materiality and medical practices, it offers challenging interdisciplinary questions on the history of anatomy as a whole.

The conference addresses questions such as:
How do the technical details of anatomical preparations tell us about the ideas of their maker; how do ideas on beauty and perfection shape preparations; how were preparations handled and used for teaching
purposes: how does the interest of non-medical audiences shape anatomical preparations? On collections as a whole we can ask: How are particular collections build up; how do decisions of curators affect the build-up of collections; how does the housing of a collection affect its outlook and popularity?

Keynote speakers: Andrew Cunningham, Ruth Richardson, Anita Guerrini, Sam Alberti, Simon Chaplin and Anna Märker.

Organisers: Rina Knoeff, Marieke Hendriksen, Hieke Huistra.

Registration deadline: 1 February 2012
Research Associates in History of Social Science and Communication of
Science

Salary: £27,428–£35,788 pa

We wish to appoint two full-time post-doctoral research associates, for
4-years from September 2012, to be part of a European Research Council
funded project 'Economics in the Public Sphere: USA, UK, France, Poland and
Brazil since 1945' (ERC Grant:283754). The project is directed by Dr Tiago
Mata and will comprise of a research team of five members, including one
research assistant/administrator and two doctoral students.

Candidates must have an outstanding record in a field related to the
project (history of social science, communications studies, and sociology
of knowledge) and an excellent knowledge of the economic and political
history of the country case selected. Preferred applicants will have
experience in one or more of the research methods: archival research, oral
history, ethnographic observation, content and textual analysis of media.
Candidates must have completed their doctorate prior to taking up the
appointment.

In addition to pursuing their own original research, post holders are
expected to help maintain a project website, organize and participate in
project seminars and workshops, and provide editorial assistance. They will
be expected to produce at least one research paper a year on a topic
relevant to the project and assist in compiling and editing a collected
volume of papers. All staff will be based in Cambridge.

Project description
The project studies 'economic journalism' as a site for the production of
public economic knowledge. The practices of journalists will be examined to
reveal how they parse competing claims of expertise by academic economists,
other social scientists and by laymen. The project takes a cross-national
approach examining the economic press the in USA, UK, France, Poland, and
Brazil. Cultural standards of trust, the history and economics of the
media, and the history of economics and social movements will be used to
explain the emergence of distinct national genres of 'economic journalism'.
The project offers an original perspective on how public knowledge of the
economy is an iterative process engaging journalists, academics and laymen
and explores the implications of this knowledge formation for the
possibilities of public support for economic action and policies.

Interest for closed spaces played an important part in the critical renewal of the humanities from the 1960s on, as demonstrated in particular the work of Erving Goffman and Michel Foucault. For the past ten years, the spatial turn has provided new impetus for a greater consideration of space as a place of socialisation. These approaches, devoted to the empirical study of institutions such as the mental hospital and prison, have put the actors and social dynamics at the center of their interest. In keeping with this line of research, we propose to shift the gaze to the material cultures of these spaces.
Be it the prison, the convent, the boarding school, the nursing home, the
(psychiatric) hospital or the camp, the material culture of these institutions has gained little consideration till now. Objects, however, configure the experience of closed spaces as well for those who can leave them as for those who are locked up. They allow for a detailed classification of the different populations who constitute these places.
How does the staff working in confined spaces appropriate these workplaces? How do the inmates arrange this enclosing physical framework, a framework which among other things, prevents any intimacy of the daily rituals, which are open to the gaze of others. How do these two groups of actors interpret, confirm, deny and/or transform this reality?
These spaces are commonly perceived as hermetically closed. On closer inspection, it appears that they constantly open themselves up to the
outside: in particular, the maintenance of buildings and of the infrastructure requires the intervention of people (artisans, gardeners, surveyors, architects...), which are commonly not associated with these spaces. But there are also objects (letters, cigarettes, combs ...) that make these enclosed spaces porous. People use objects to occupy the space and to manage the time in those places. These material items provide the framework of the social construction of space. They shape the possibilities for acting of the multiple actors.
The biography of an object - the imagined object, the produced object and the acting object - allows us to rethink spatiality. Its materiality opens but also limits the actors' scope for manoeuvre. Professional items (medical devices, weapons, handcuffs ...) as well as the infrastructure (toilets, tables, beds ...) must be examined in relation with the people who use them. We would like to direct the attention at the techniques applied by the actors in order to use this arsenal of objects. The unspectacular objects and the daily rituals in using them are our main interest. The interaction between actor and the materiality of the objects produces focal moments where power relations become visible and that allow us to examine the material and bodily aspects of experiences and human practices.
This workshop is aimed at social scientists and hopes to bring together two methodological trends: on one hand the interest for the analysis of social practices at the micro level and of the different meanings that actors give to their experiences and on the other hand the attention given to objects by assigning them a certain agency, an approach advocated currently by the science studies.
The workshop will be held from 11 to 12 October 2012 at the University of Luxembourg. Proposals for papers (1 page) and a brief CV should be sent by 1 March 2012 to the following address:
culturematerielle@yahoo.com. The working language will be English.

Functionality of Homes and Their Appliances – Challenges for Design, Technology and Production

People furnish their homes with various connotations and give various emphases to their implications. While some appreciate the status value of their homes, others prefer cosiness and a relaxed atmosphere. Some aim to keep their homes as economical as possible, whereas others regard home as the primary investment object. Nevertheless, most people want to use home for expressing their personality. Hence there is a saying that “show me your home and I tell you what kind of a person you are”.

Despite its significance, functionality is seldom brought up as the foremost preference when people characterise their existing homes or their ideal residences. Nevertheless, an aim to reach functionality adapted to its purpose is always at present in one way or another, although the practicality of homes is a blurred concept. One reason for that is people’s tendency to see functionality from dissimilar perspectives.
Homeowners have their ideas of functionality, whereas providers of commodities attempt to anticipate what kind of home functionality consumers prefer at the moment and will expect in the near future.

This session aims to examine how consumers see functionality on one hand and how architects, house builders, designers and engineers of home appliances attempt, on the other hand to please the present sentiments of consumers or to set new trends for designing home interiors and equipping them with appliances. How much power consumers have in furnishing their homes and shaping household technology? These themes can be approached by contributors from various perspectives and time dimensions. A key viewpoint is to examine the dialogue of various stakeholders as a meeting point of challenging encounters and solving hitches innovatively.

Please, contact Timo Myllyntaus (timmyl@utu.fi) and submit an abstract
(200–400 words) of your paper and a one page CV by 28 January 2012.
Historical Perspectives in India and South Africa (editors P.Bala and
R.Viljoen)

The volume explores new perspectives in understanding colonialism and medicine, and healing practices in the context of India and South Africa. While studies in history of medicine over the past two decades have alluded to developmental trajectories of colonial and indigenous medicines, they have projected these against a broad canvas of engagement and alienation processes over a period of time. The study moves beyond these presentations to examine the nature of medicine, medical practices, strategies, and knowledge ‘transfers’ and exchange between India and South Africa. We aim to follow amulti-disciplinary approach within the area of history of medicine, drawing from analytical perspectives of history, sociology, anthropology and area studies.

We propose the following themes for proposed chapters and would welcome other suggestions. Themes include Doctors, Autonomy and Medical Profession, Medical Education, Epidemics and Medicine, Medical Market, Delivering Health Care, Colonial Strategies and Madness, Comparative perspectives relating to the above, or any other.
Please send an abstract of 200-300 words and a short bio to p.bala@csuohio.edu
Abstracts should be sent by 25 February 2012 Full articles will be expected by September 2012
PERSPECTIVE AS PRACTICE:
An international conference on the circulation of optical knowledge in and outside the workshop - October 12-13, 2012, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin
Organizers: Sven Dupré, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin & Jeanne Peiffer, Centre Alexandre Koyré, Paris
We invite proposals from scholars in the history of science and technology, the history of art, technical art history and conservation science and other related disciplines for an international conference on the production and circulation of optical knowledge in workshop and design practices of the visual and decorative arts and (garden) architecture between the fourteenth and seventeenth century.
This conference addresses both the practical optical knowledge produced in the context of artists’ workshops and artists’ appropriation and use of the science of optics (perspectiva), which included questions of psychology, physiology, anatomy, physics, and mathematics, for the production of art and architecture, including gardens. We welcome, in particular, papers which discuss the material practices of artists (as diverse as gardeners and goldsmiths) in imitating and representing the effects of light, creating the illusion of space and the shaping of landscape (from the use of paper and other instruments, also on real sites, to experimentation with the optical qualities of pigments and binding media). Equally welcome are papers which throw light on artists’ reading of texts on optics and their possible use in the context of the workshop.
We see this conference as a correction to the ways in which Erwin Panofsky’s „Perspective as Symbolic Form“ – written more than 80 years ago – has shaped the historiography of perspective up until the present day, despite more recent important interventions by a.o. James Elkins and Hans Belting). Therefore, instead of seeking connections with worldviews and philosophies of space, this conference takes into account the polysemy of perspective associated with the practice of perspective. The conference will bring out the variety of uses and different meanings of perspectiva – during the period between 1300 and 1700 and across different sites of artists’ appropriations of optical knowledge. By situating artists’ optical knowledge in workshop and design practices, we anticipate that the conference papers will be attentive to a variety of constructions that create the illusion of space, and pay as much attention to other types of optical knowledge as to the geometry of perspective. We especially welcome innovative approaches to the study of the circulation of optical knowledge within the artist’s workshop.
Invited speakers:
Marjolijn Bol (Utrecht), Filippo Camerota (Florence), Georges Farhat (Toronto), Francesca Fiorani (Virginia), Elaheh Kheirandish (Harvard), Dominique Raynaud (Grenoble), Pietro Roccasecca (Rome)

Submission guidelines:
Deadline for proposals: March 15, 2012
Please submit a 300-words abstract as e-mail attachment along with your name, institutional affiliation and email address to officedupre@mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de.

Culture, Mind, and Brain: Emerging Concepts, Methods, Applications

October 19–20, 2012

UCLA

Website: http://www.thefpr.org/conference2012/index.php

Description

Many lines of research on culture, mind, and brain can no longer be neatly separated. Some questions run together, thanks to our growing understanding of the genome, the biological roots of human sociality, and the mutual constitution of cultures and selves, as well as the complex interactions between the physical, cultural, and social environments underlying health and illness.

The aim of this 2-day conference is to highlight emerging concepts, methodologies and applications in the study of culture, mind, and brain, with particular attention to: (1) cutting-edge neuroscience research that is successfully incorporating culture and the social world; (2) the context in which methods are used as well as the tacit assumptions that shape research questions; and (3) the kinds and quality of collaborations that can advance interdisciplinary research training.

The conference is designed to appeal to a wide academic audience of biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, and those in related fields interested in learning about cutting-edge interdisciplinary research at the intersection of culture, mind, and brain.

In his 1959 lecture "The Two Cultures" C.P. Snow asserted that the intellectual life of western society was increasingly being split into two polar groups: the sciences, and the humanities. The notion that visual artists and scientists are two entirely isolated strata of human activity and experience has proliferated since the nineteenth century, and continues to plague academic institutions and political policy today. The term "scientist" was coined in 1834 as a means of designating those who worked professionally in the various sciences. The "scientist" was described by direct analogy to the artist; suggesting that these now seemingly dichotomous areas of scholarship were in fact intended to exist in direct relationship to one another.

This conference seeks to challenge Snow's separatist assertion, and explore the ways in which visual artists have acknowledged, appropriated and assimilated the ideas and theories of the ever-expanding field of "science" in their work since c.1800, the moment at which the professionalization of the sciences engendered a seemingly irrevocable split in the academy. As a result, we hope to recoup a sense of interdisciplinary fluidity amongst the international fields of visual arts and sciences, in order to build as complex and nuanced a picture as possible of the exchanges and interconnections between the "two cultures"
over the past two centuries.

We invite abstracts for papers of 20 minutes by postgraduates that address the theme of relationships between the visual arts and the sciences 1800-2011. We welcome submissions from students working across the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and applied sciences, but ask that the papers specifically address such relationships from the perspective of visual or material culture. Possible themes for discussion might include, but are by no means limited to:

-- Collaborations and communications between artists and scientists.
-- Representation and/or use of scientific concepts, vocabularies or technologies by an artist in the creation of works.
-- Modern medicine and representations of the body.
-- Representations of warfare, machinery and technological development - their physical and psychological effects/treatments.
-- The influence of post-Darwinian structures/theories on the visual realm.
-- The effect of/responses to new media such as photography, film, and internet.
-- The advent of cybernetics and computers, from early experimental use to contemporary digital media.
-- The ways in which the relationship between art and science intersects with issues of class, gender, sexuality and ethnicity.
-- The attitude of art education to science and vice versa.
-- How established genres such as landscape and still-life have responded to scientific developments.

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words. We ask that applicants also submit a brief biography in addition to their abstract. The deadline for submission is February 24th 2012. All submissions should be sent to Kirstin Donaldson and Robert Sutton at TwoCultures2012@gmail.com along with any questions regarding the conference or abstracts.
* Full-time, 2 year fixed term, attractive remuneration package:
$92.6K p.a. (which includes salary, leave loading and up to 17% super)

The University of Sydney has received a prestigious grant from the John Templeton Foundation<http://www.templeton.org/> to explore the nature of time and streamline worldwide academic research on the subject.

The project, entitled New Agendas for the Study of Time: Connecting the Disciplines, will focus on asking which aspects of time belong to which disciplines in order to reinvigorate, and perhaps resolve, age- old puzzles. In achieving this, a new clarity will be brought to the study of time in a global sense, setting the agenda for the subject's future.

As part of the project the University will be making four appointments, each in different disciplinary areas.

This particular Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PRF) will work on the history and philosophy of time, focussing on the way time is understood across a wide variety of disciplines, including economics, psychology, anthropology, cognitive science, and biology. The position will be situated in the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science<http://sydney.edu.au/science/hps/index.shtml> (HPS) and in this role you will:

* produce a catalogue of concepts of time across various
scientific disciplines, with a view to finding commonalities and differences.
* publish in journals of high standing, and possibly contribute to
chapters in books related to the project.
* take an interdisciplinary perspective on your research, which in
part will involve continued communication between this role and the other three PRF appointments (which will deal with the philosophy of the physics of time; the psychology and neurobiology of time and the metaphysics of time respectively) as well as participation in two of the three international meetings.
* contribute to a public discussion on the nature of time.
* contribute to administration of the project, possibly including
its conferences, outreach, and books.

To be successful in this role you will have:

* completed your PhD in HPS (or a relevant discipline) by the
project start date of 1 January, 2013;
* a strong research record in HPS with a promising research
trajectory;
* expertise in history and/or philosophy of science, especially
relating to the study of time;
*   an interdisciplinary perspective.

Desirable for appointment is your:

* administrative experience, especially in organizing
workshops/seminars.

This position represents an outstanding opportunity to capitalize on your previous training and advance your research career.

Please note that the start date for this position will be early January 2013.

Remuneration package: $92,604 p.a. (which includes a base salary of
$78,252 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's contribution to superannuation).

Organisers: Jochen F. Mayer and Luise Fischer ( University of Edinburgh )

Call for Papers

Geography, Science and Machines c. 1750-1960

This session is concerned
with the role of machines within the history and geography of scientific knowledge-making c. 1750-1960. Our proposal is informed by the belief that scholarship within historical geography and the work on the geography of science has largely neglected the material and technological bases to scientific knowledge-making and to the ordering of the social world more broadly. Scholarship has been interested in the technology and instruments of exploration on earth (Driver 2001) , and in outer-space (MacDonald 2007) . There has been less attention, however, to historical and sociological work that emphasised the role of material infrastructure in the organisation of state power and the role of material cultural practice in the manufacture of scientific knowledge (Shapin and Schaffer 1985/2011; Callon 2004; Latour 2005; Bennett and Joyce 2010) .

This proposal builds on such
attempts to bridge the history of technology and the history/geography of science. We explicitly ask about the relationship between 'machines' and practices of knowledge making in the wider social and cultural contexts. We apply a broad understanding of 'machines'. They can be considered a (seemingly) independently functioning structure and a human construction and device. 'Machines'
may describe 'small' instruments or 'large' technologies (mechanical systems, or electronic systems) . In the attempt to avoid material determinism, we are particularly interested in studies that explore the inclusion of human design and practice into the meaning of 'machines', and that investigate the spatiality of such human- machine relationships. We especially welcome papers that explore the networks of technologies, institutions, and human practices that allow a given society to select, store and produce scientific knowledge.

Papers may include themes
such as:

- The role (whether present or absent) of machines in
scientific knowledge making, e.g., machines in geographical knowledge production, circulation, and reception
- Geographies of knowledge technologies (e.g., their
construction, meaning, and application) and human-machine relationships
- GIS as a 'machine' and the history of GIS within (the)
geographical discipline (s)
- Government/bureaucracy as machine, and machines within
government/bureaucracy (office machines such as typewriters etc.)
- Spatial interaction and scalar effects of 'machines' and
human practices

The Co-Production of Knowledge: Social Media, STS and ...

18-20 July 2012, Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, UK

The ubiquitous social and cultural adoption of social media, such as
Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook can be seen to present a
significant example of scientific and technological innovation in
many contemporary societies. While some studies of social media and,
more specifically, Web 2.0 platforms built around user-generated
content, have made reference to the importance of the field of
science and technology studies (STS) for understanding their
development and diffusion, scholars working within this academic
framework have yet to fully turn their focus on this area.

This three-day symposium is intended to explore the intersection
between STS and social media inquiry, with a specific focus on how
Web 2.0 is both generative and challenging of different forms of
knowledge (co-)production and the authority it commands.

Speakers Include:

Geof Bowker, UC Irvine

Leah Lievrouw, UCLA

Adrian MacKenzie, Cesagen, University of Lancaster

Rob Proctor, e-Research Centre, University of Manchester

Robin Williams, ISSTI, University of Edinburgh

Sally Wyatt, e-Humanities Programme, Royal Netherlands Academy of
Arts and Sciences

Questions related to co-production, citizen science, the power of
data algorithms and metrics to shape or bypass human agency, and the
possibility of participatory forms of surveillance are just some of
the issues that are raised. The conference is intended to bring
together leading scholars in the fields of STS, communication and
social media analysis, and the history and philosophy of science to
critically explore these issues.

We invite either individual papers or a suggested panel including 3
papers.

Further details on submission of papers and registration information
is at: www.york.ac.uk/satsu/news-

Please note: the deadline for this Call for Papers is 29 February
2012.
An artistic and social scientific exploration of the human - animal boundaries in zoological gardens'

The Bern University of the Arts (BUA) unites a multitude of artistic disciplines under one roof and develops multi-discipline perspectives in teaching and research. It offers a programme of courses and further education in the fields of Design and Fine Arts, Conservation and Restoration, Music, Opera/Theatre and Literature.
The inter-disciplinary research focus ‘Intermediality’ is part of the research department. It tests translation processes between different mediums and, in particular, explores interferences between scientific and artistic methods of approach and representation.
Within the framework of a three-year interdisciplinary project ‘We’re hibernating! An artistic and social scientific exploration of the human - animal boundaries in zoological gardens, funded by the Swiss National Fund and affiliated with the ‘Intermediality’ research focus, we are looking for a
doctorate student (in the social sciences)
starting from 1.3.2012 or by arrangement.
The aim of the project is to investigate, using an interdisciplinary combination of artistic-installation methods and a social scientific approach, the handling of human – animal relationships in and of the spatial arrangements of the zoo. This will be carried out with the help of two doctorate students, one of which should have a background in the arts and the other in social sciences. The methodology is to include artistic and ethnographic explorations.
Further information can be found at http://www.hkb.bfh.ch/de/hkb/stellenangebote/ . Please be aware that we are only accepting online applications for this position.
The project leader, Priska Gisler (Leader of Research Focus ‘Intermediality’) can also be contacted at priska.gisler@hkb.bfh.ch with any further questions.
FeedBurner

The emotional upbringing and education of children is a topic of acute historical as well as contemporary concern for policy makers and politicians. The main goal of this conference is to draw together new research in the history of childhood and youth, in the history of education and the important interventions from the emerging discipline of the history of the emotions. The conference seeks to build a comparative history of the education of the emotions through an exploration of formal and informal educational contexts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The intent of the conference is to focus broadly on both formal and informal educational strategies, both inside and outside of the family, and at the level of the State. How far did the State exercise control over the education of the emotions? To what extent did governmental strategies inform, and to what extent were they informed by, political, ideological, cultural, familial and religious understandings of children and their emotional states? What was the role, from the late nineteenth century, of voluntary societies in informing official state policy on childhood? Also at this time, did the increasingly professionalized scientific, psychological, educational fields fundamentally alter ideas and policies related to children and emotions?

Schools, youth associations, religious institutions and family structures all contributed, and sometimes competed, in providing children and youth with the necessary emotional and moral framework in order to shape the next generation of men, women, workers and citizens. How did children and youth navigate this range of emotional contexts, feelings and expressions in different phases of growing up? To what extent were various forms of childhood education informed by questions of emotion? How did changing historical perceptions of childhood interact with changing conceptions of emotions and vice versa? Is there such a thing as a distinct set of emotions in childhood and how does this change over time? In what ways can the history of emotions and the history of childhood and youth be integrated to allow deeper insight in both? What are the methodological challenges here and what sorts of source material can be marshalled?

Possible topics include the history of emotions and:

• Theory and methodology linked with the history of childhood and
youth

• Imperial/colonial and postcolonial childhood and cross-cultural
perspectives

• Education in school and outside of institutional settings
(professional and lay)

• Professionalization of disciplines related to childhood and
youth and child welfare

• Family and community networks

• Popular culture (media, music, literature, movies, television
and visual culture)

• Religious and secular norms of behaviour and feeling, and
resistance to them

• Material culture (clothes, toys, spaces, advertising)

• Gendered and racialized childhood and youth

• Experiences in infancy, childhood, and adolescence (e.g.,
intensity or variability of emotional experiences; mixed emotions)

• Expression and control of emotions in infancy, childhood,
adolescence

• Particular emotions (e.g. anger, fear, love)

• Moral development and moral education

This three-day international conference will bring together scholars interested in the intersection of childhood, youth, education and the emotions in historical perspectives. Multi-disciplinary perspectives are welcome and encouraged. The conference will be held at the Institute for Human Development, Centre for the History of Emotions, in Berlin and is organized by Stephanie Olsen and Juliane Brauer. Peter N. Stearns, Provost and Professor of History at George Mason University, will give the keynote address.

Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. Interested applicants should send a short CV and a paper abstract (max. 250 words) to cfp-emotions@mpib-berlin.mpg.de<mailto:cfp-emotions@mpib-berlin.mpg.de> by April 1, 2012.
