Statistics shows that about 75% of the people working today are unhappy with their current jobs. One reason is that their skills are wasted because they are not applicable to their current jobs. Here is how self-improvement can secure your job future.

That’s just one of the problems. You might have unreasonable demands placed upon you or have to work really long hours to get anywhere. Your promotion path may be blocked and you can’t get to where you want to be because of the image that people have of you, your experience, or your performance in the job.

This is when self-improvement will help your job security out. You should know how to appreciate your job if you want to succeed in life and self-improvement can secure your job future.

If you are always late arriving for your job, it could become the reason for your losing it. Why don’t you try to wake up early or if you’re always experiencing traffic delays, try to find another route. Self-improvement of your habits will help you succeed and can secure your job future.

There might be criticism leveled against you that isn’t just. There could be too much politics or backstabbing, the job may not be what you expected. You were promised one thing, but it turned into something else.

One thing that you should do about backstabbing and job security is always to hold your temper or it will be another reason for firing you. You have to get to the root of what is causing your unhappiness about where you are and what you’re currently doing.

The easiest way is to ask “Why?” five times.

“Oh, I’m not happy.” Well, why? “Because I got passed for a promotion.” Why was that? “Because they didn’t value the project I was working on.” Why not? “Because management changed and they changed the objectives.” Well, why was that? You really sort of drill down to the root cause and find out what the problem really is.

An interview winning CV MUST be able to do these two things:

1. To illustrate your relevant work skills and strengths and your personal value-adding achievements in order to maximize your chances of being invited to an interview and

2. To put all of your background information, such as employment dates, places and names together in an accessible and readable form.

Making An Interview Winning CV

When you are putting your CV together, the first step is for you to analyse your skills and abilities, and how those abilities relate to your intended job target or business sector. These can be summarized on the front page of the CV for maximum effect and presented in a short bullet list of 'Key Skills' or 'Core Competencies', in an interview winning CV for an executive these may be include Leadership, M&A skills, Financial Analysis or Policy Making and Strategic Planning.

So, if your CV is not currently generating the interviews you expected, it is time to start re-assessing it. Check to see that the following elements are present and correct in your CV. If not you should consider a complete rewrite or get professional help with writing a new CV.

For entry level jobs, the CV begins with a succinct, clearly stated career objective tailored to the particular job for which you are applying. For more senior roles, the objective should be replaced with a summary statement to clarify your seniority, your sector experience and your unique value adding abilities.
The CV highlights how your skills and qualifications match the company's specific needs. Use the job decription and person specification to pick out and reflect the words and language they use when spelling out their requirements and makes effective use of the key words and phrases contained in the job advertisement to describe your skills and areas of expertise.
It uses appropriate job titles for previous jobs to demonstrate clearly that you are suitably qualified for the advertised position. Don't be precious about your actual job title, use a job title for your interview winning CV that is meaningful, not a fancy corporate label.
If your previous employers are not well known, you can give a concise description of their products, services, industry but most importantly your role in the company.
Uses quantified statements to describe your accomplishments with relevant numbers, volumes, percentages for increases or savings and the value to your employer, but does not go into the detail of HOW you achieved what you did. That is best saved for the interview.
Every sentence starts with an action word, for example: "increased production by 19% while saving £314,000 in operating costs" Click to see some examples of effective action words to use in your interview winning CV.
Explains where and when, in your previous jobs, you increased sales and profits, improved productivity, saved time and costs, and established good customer relationships.
Provides evidence of the work skills and competencies most valued by employers, for example: your communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility, initiative, organisational ability, and teamwork.
Includes any pertinent professional memberships, awards or honours you may have received.
Provides your educational history and details of training related to the position you are seeking.
The layout is neat and uncluttered, with an easy-to-read sequence of sections and no large blocks of text.
Contains no errors in spelling or grammar; and all unnecessary words have been eliminated.
Hobbies and interests should rarely be included; then only if they serve to reveal characteristics, skills or accomplishments that support your career objective.
Does not include name or contact details of referees, you should merely state: References available on request.

For an effective interview winning CV you must first meet the 2 key objectives, which are to illustrate your relevant strengths and achievements and to present your background information in an accessible and readable form.

The issue of job winning answers at interviews gets Human Resources personnel, professional recruiters and various other career experts to all agree: one of the best ways to prepare yourself for a job interview is to anticipate questions, develop your answers, and practice, practice, practice. This is how to win the job by making a change of mind. By that I don't mean you to start dithering;

I mean you need to change the way you think and start to act differently so that you win the job of your dreams... Your interview profile is an easy way to get prepared for your interview and remind yourself of the things you should be expecting to encounter when you meet the organization's representative for the first time.

A second interview may be arranged for any number of reasons, but none of them mean that you can relax when you attend. You still need to be on your best form because the final selection has not yet been made by the hiring manager.

Career-changers could solve UK’s engineering shortfall

Senior engineers are most in demand

International skills shortage is enticing UK engineers abroad

Career-changers could ease the shortfall of senior engineers, according to Roevin Engineering Recruitment.

In a new initiative, the specialist recruitment firm is encouraging candidates from all levels and sectors to assess their aptitude for a career in engineering. As another Fresher’s Week sparks the perennial debate on graduate engineering shortages, recruitment data suggests it is senior engineers who are in highest demand. 12% of advertised engineering jobs are for senior engineers, with this role topping the list of the most sought-after positions for both permanent and contract roles, according to data from Roevin.

Mark Tully, head of Roevin Engineering Recruitment, says: “Engineers are being enticed into careers in other sectors – with bigger paycheques and more glamorous reputations. Their skills are welcomed to the ranks of accountants, law firms and consultants, but there is little flow in the opposite direction. Many professionals with experience in other sectors have transferable skills that would be an asset in an engineering role – yet few people are aware of this opportunity. If you are fascinated by how things work but decided at age 18 not to take an engineering degree, it does not – and should not – preclude you from making a valuable contribution in that profession.”

To encourage greater numbers into engineering, Roevin Engineering Recruitment has created an online tool asking ‘Could you be an engineer?’ By answering questions about education, professional background, key interests and approach to problem solving, respondents generate a score indicating their aptitude for an engineering career. Appropriate candidates then embark on a process of technical up-skilling and training, before beginning an apprenticeship scheme. The tool forms part of a wider Roevin campaign encouraging new entrants into engineering.

Roevin is set to deliver workshops in schools to promote the career to young people – up to 12 years before they will enter the workforce. The programme targets students before they choose their A-level options, as most university courses require maths and at least one other science subject. Sam Wormald-Smith, director at Roevin, added: “At home and abroad, there is real and rising demand for people with engineering skills. Government investment into STEM subjects and apprenticeships has begun to increase numbers at junior levels but there are not enough senior engineers to manage new intakes. Businesses, government and universities must work together to attract people from a range of backgrounds into engineering careers.

Both candidates and employers must be encouraged to recognise the significant value of transferable skills.” An international shortfall of engineers is exacerbating the UK’s shortage, and creating a brain-drain as senior UK engineers accept jobs abroad. From Australia to the Middle East, companies are willing to pay relocation costs and provide significant benefits packages to entice UK engineers to emigrate. In the next few years, the UK is expected to face greater demand for engineering requirements, as infrastructure projects expand and the drive towards a low carbon economy creates green jobs for skilled engineers.

Across the UK the number of permanent engineering vacancies increased last month to 24,560, while the number of contractor vacancies rose to 1,881. The shortage is putting upward pressure on pay within the engineering and construction industry.

Competence Based Interviews & Appraisals

So far I've mainly dealt with interviews that are the standard 'what did you do here' or 'why did you go there' type of interview questions which are based around your CV and what you will bring to the party.

An interesting departure from this style is the behavioral interview where the interviewer is looking for specific evidence of a particular set of abilities or competences.

This is a very common style of interview initially used by recruitment officers who needed to assess competency levels via the applicant's ability to carry himself /herself on such situations.

Performance appraisals can also benefit from understanding these principles.

Maybe you find yourself in a new team environment and leading a team for the first time, or maybe you have been working with and leading teams forever. Either way, the keys in this article - whether as new information or a fresh reminder - can make a world of difference in morale, productivity and results from teams.

Help the team identify its purpose. People work more effectively when they understand the goals they are trying to achieve. As a leader it is your job to help the team see the desired outcome of their efforts and help them set specific goals and milestones along the way. Set the scope and boundaries. Teams need to know what they should tackle and what is "too big" or not their responsibility.

By helping teams manage the scope of their work you will keep them more focused and on target to reach the goals more quickly.

Show your belief. If you don't believe in the team concept, you won't effectively lead teams. If you do believe both in the concept and in a particular team's potential, you need to let them know that. Show through both your words and actions that you believe in them. Once they have purpose and goals and your belief, they are on their way to success.

Define your role. Your role is to lead, not to do the work or make all of the decisions. Let the team know what you role is and isn't. Help them see how you are relying on their experience, knowledge and intellect in the completion of the team's work. Be a supporter. Support the team with your actions. Don't just delegate the work to the team and be gone.

Have Some PASTA with Your Interview

When cyclists prepare for a big race, they always make sure they load up on the carbs. It is not uncommon to have a pasta feed the night before an important event so that the athletes can store up some of the carbohydrates they will be burning up the next day. The same goes for preparing for an interview. A candidate for a job, preparing for that all-important interview, needs to take in some PASTA. However, it isn't the same kind of pasta, but it is something that will energize, fortify and maximize a person's chances in having a successful interview.

Here is the PASTA that is being suggested:

P, prepare thoroughly;
A, attitude adjustment;
S, start the interview off smartly;
T, tips to be followed; and
A, after-the-interview follow-up.

These five steps can provide a level of preparation, comfort, and professionalism that should impress the decision makers with your performance under pressure and to demonstrate your abilities and attributes in the best light.

How does one prepare (P) for an interview? You would be surprised how many people do absolutely nothing or very little in this realm. However, this is the one thing that you have completely in your control.

Attitude (A) or your overall demeanor is a dominant factor that will influence how the interviewer or panel perceives you and your personality. It is important to be positive in all ways that you express yourself and to always be courteous to everyone with which you come into contact. It is a good thing to be mildly assertive, but not aggressive or arrogant.

Starting the interview (S) is the precise point where a first impression will be made. Many times a candidate thinks that the first question of the interview is the actual beginning of the interview. In reality it begins when the candidate enters the room and is introduced.

The tips (T) that can put professionalism into actual responses to questions are cloaked in many details. They are small, but extremely significant, elements in the overall interview process. Realize that your articulation and vocabulary is being scrutinized thoroughly. Using "kinda, yeah, and gonna" are some words to avoid.

After the interview (A), a follow up routine can be most impressive to the interviewer(s). Besides thanking them at the interview when you stand up to leave, following up with a personalized letter is a very appropriate thing to do. If you do not get the position, it is also appropriate to ask for feedback on how your interview could have been improved. Many human resources administrators will willingly schedule an appointment to review the strengths and weaknesses of the interview.

Interview Tips: How to Get the Job You Want

1. Enter into a state of relaxed concentration. This is the state from which great basketball players or Olympic skaters operate. You'll need to quiet the negative self chatter in your head through meditation or visualization prior to sitting down in the meeting. You'll focus on the present moment and will be less apt to experience lapses in concentration, nervousness, self-doubt and self-condemnation.

2. Expect to answer the question, "Tell me about yourself." This is a pet question of prepared and even unprepared interviewers. Everything you include should answer the question, "Why should we hire you?" Carefully prepare your answer to include examples of achievements from your work life that closely match the elements of the job before you. Obviously, you'll want to know as much about the job description as you can before you respond to the question.

3. Set goals for the interview. It is your job to leave the meeting feeling secure that the interviewer knows as much as he or she possibly can about your skills, abilities, experience and achievements. If you sense there are misconceptions, clear them up before leaving. If the interviewer doesn't get around to asking you important questions, pose them yourself (diplomatically) and answer them. Don't leave the meeting without getting your own questions answered so that you have a clear idea of what you would be getting yourself into. If possible, try to get further interviews, especially with other key players.

4. Act spontaneous, but be well prepared. Be your authentic self, professional yet real. Engage in true conversation with your interviewer, resting on the preparation you did prior to coming to the meeting. Conduct several trial runs with another person simulating the interview before it actually occurs. It's the same as anticipating the questions you'll be asked on a final exam.

5. Be smart about money questions. Don't fall into the trap of telling the interviewer your financial expectations. You may be asking for too little or too much money and in each case ruin your chances of being offered the job. Instead, ask what salary range the job falls in. Attempt to postpone a money discussion until you have a better understanding of the scope of responsibilities of the job.

6. Know the question behind the question. Ultimately, every question boils down to, "Why should we hire you?" Be sure you answer that completely. If there is a question about your meeting deadlines, consider whether the interviewer is probing delicately about your personal life, careful not to ask you whether your family responsibilities will interfere with your work. Find away to address fears if you sense they are present.

7. Consider the interviewer's agenda. Much is on the shoulders of the interviewer. He or she has the responsibility of hiring the right candidate. Your ability to do the job will need to be justified. "Are there additional pluses here?" "Will this person fit the culture of this organization?" These as well as other questions will be heavily on the interviewer's mind. Find ways to demonstrate your qualities above and beyond just doing the job.

8. Follow up with an effective "thank you" letter. Don't write this letter lightly. It is another opportunity to market yourself. Find some areas discussed in the meeting and expand upon them in your letter. Writing a letter after a meeting is a very minimum. Standing out among the other candidates will occur if you thoughtfully consider this follow up letter as an additional interview in which you get to do all the talking. Propose useful ideas that demonstrate your added value to the team.

Beat Negative Thinking by Your Positive Attitude

Are your negative thoughts holding you back from being successful? Do you believe that most things don't go your way or even that your life seems filled with conflict and turmoil? Do you let daily events control how you feel inside? If you do, don't worry you're not alone. What's missing is your positive attitude.

Most people believe that they feel the way they do because they react to the events happening around them and there is nothing they can do about it.

However, despite all that, the events themselves have no power to make you feel one way or the other. You may find it hard to believe but it's true. The events themselves do not have any control over how you feel.
So if the things that happen in your life are not what make you feel, say, happy or sad then what is it?
Naturally you will say well when I see the drought in Africa affecting so many children, I'm bound to be affected. Yes of course you are, but that's because you have learned compassion during your formative years.

Therefore the answer is YOU. You alone, not the external events, have the power to control your feelings. Let me explain more how you can develop your positive attitude:
You return from your annual holiday in Majorca to the news that your company has been taken over and you will probably be made redundant. Unless you are very unusual, this is what usually happens. Your immediate thoughts are: I need to get my CV sorted out and start applying for a job. What if I can't find one; how will I pay for the new car I just bought? Will they come to repossess it? You start to feel sick and wish you'd never gone on holiday in the first place.

What has started happening is your mind playing a series of negative images or 'pictures' caused by this sudden turn of events. But in reality nothing has happened yet, so the feelings of sickness and the worry are in response to something that hasn't even happened!

Now if instead of dwelling on these negative events that may or may not happen you can think of something positive you could change the outcome. By being positive and focusing on a good event from your past and reliving something that makes you feel secure you instantly start to feel better, instead of letting yourself get worked up. This is the power and control that you possess to get you on the right side of difficult times. This is simply anchoring yourself so that you can step back and see what is really happening. You are developing your positive attitude.

Naturally, I'm not suggesting you remain oblivious to problems around you, but the fact is that you can only make rational decisions when your head is clear. Now you are thinking clearly you can devise an action plan; if you do lose your job start by updating your CV. Who do you know that can help you out? What can you say to express your skills? Where can you brush up your interview techniques? These steps are much easier when you feel good about yourself. If you don't, it shows in your demeanour and losing your positive attitude makes finding a job much more difficult.

I said at the start that you learn how to react to events from others in your formative years and if you learn to control your negative thoughts and replace them with more positive ones, it will be much easier to learn new reactions from your experiences instead of reverting to old patterns.

Did you know you can have high self-confidence?

Many of us don't believe that we can have self-confidence and go through life feeling that we are just 'not good enough', or worse still that we are 'impostors'. We become highly skilled at convincing ourselves that we don't really matter and that we will never amount to anything.

This lack of self-confidence comes at a high price. The fact is that although many people are lacking in self-esteem and feel powerless to do anything about it, they have created the situation for themselves. This self-made poor self esteem needs to be resolved urgently; it affects emotional and physical well-being and really reduces the quality of your life.

Here is how you can move to what I call 'Directed Self-Confidence' and to help you get started think about these questions:

To whom or to what are you comparing yourself?

When you think you are not good enough to whom or to what are you comparing yourself?
What sort of question is that you might say. OK then I have an action for you: The next time you start to think "I'm not good enough", ask yourself: "what exactly does 'good enough' look like? "? Be specific; to what or whom, did you compare yourself when you reached the conclusion that you are not good enough?
Comparing yourself with other people is not the way forward. All you see of other people is their external facade, you have no idea what goes on in their minds. So the next time you fall into this trap, take a deep breath and say "I will only be who I am and only compare myself to how I wish to be". I like and respect myself; I am becoming the person I want to be every day.

This is the way to 'directed self-confidence'.

Do you ever find yourself saying 'nobody likes me'? The feeling that everyone in the world is against you is no laughing matter, but you can get beyond that feeling too. When you meet new people do you dislike all of them or are most of them OK? Probably the latter and if so then the reverse is also likely to be true.

Most people you meet will think you're OK!

Make it even easier by making a conscious effort to think that everyone you meet, you will like. And when you like people you tend to be liked in return. This technique of directed self-confidence rubs off on those around you and you are going to be to always meeting people who like you!
Wouldn't it be wonderful?
Do you find yourself always predicting the worst possible outcome for every new situation you come up against? Are you guilty of 'awfulizing' most situations - you know how it goes: "wouldn't it be awful if..."
Next time you find yourself in this frame of mind just take a moment and try this: "wouldn't it be wonderful if..."
This approach to directed self-confidence may just free you to get on with the wonderful things in your life!
Directed Self-Confidence is something that anyone can adopt. As Shakespeare once said "Assume a virtue and it shall be yours". Self-confidence can be assured by just adopting a positive attitude and this can be life changing. If you don't feel confident at any time all you need to do is act confidently, the pretense of being confident will quickly make you feel more confident.

Don't Worry About Structured Interviews and Your Competences - Here is What to Do

Where do your competences come from? Competence comes from your skills but you would be mistaken to think it automatically means "high-level" skills. What structured interviews are about is establishing whether the competence you already possess is at the appropriate level for the job.

Below are some areas about which you might hear questions during the interview in a structured interview but remember this: a junior person can be competent in any of the areas covered here. A senior person can be competent in any of the areas covered here and the difference is the extent of the competence.

In other words, the junior person can be highly competent in a skill area as it applies to the junior job; whereas the senior person needs a higher level of skill to be considered competent for a higher level of job. So the message is about being competent to do the job at the level you are considering.

Think about these areas which commonly come up at interview and you can see that everybody doing any sort of job would have competence in all of these ability areas. The only differences are in the level at which they would be performed by someone doing a different or higher level of job.

What you should now see is that you don't need to worry about structured interviews and your competences, because they are simply relative to the job you do and not some imaginary scale of high-level skill.

But what you do need to do is think HOW these apply to YOUR job, define exactly what YOU do, then prepare a little story to illustrate it.

1. Planning and Organising is possessing the competence or ability to establish appropriate courses of action for self and /or others to accomplish a specific goal; planning proper assignments of personnel and appropriate allocation of resources.

2. Motivational Fit could be described as the extent to which job activities and responsibilities, the organisation's culture and values and the community are consistent with the type of work that is personally satisfying. The actual definition depends on you.

3. Problem Solving is the competence or ability to commit to a course of action after developing alternatives based on logical assumptions and factual information, taking into consideration resources, constraints and organisational values.

4. Work Standards includes setting high standards for self and staff workers as well as for the organisation. Being dissatisfied with average performance.

5. Delegation is defined as allocating decision-making authority to appropriate direct reports; utilising their time, skills and potential effectively.

6. Initiative shows active attempts to influence events to achieve goals. Being self-starting rather than passively waiting for something or someone. Taking action; being proactive to achieve more than is required.

Now you should see that you don't need to worry about structured interviews and your competences, because they are simply relative to the job you do and not some imaginary scale of high-level skill. All you need to do then is think how these apply to YOUR job and define what YOU do, then prepare a little story to illustrate it.

Self marketing skills are important to your career change, the only problem is that the art of personal marketing is difficult for a lot of people, but selling yourself well doesn't mean talking just about yourself or arrogantly telling others how great you are. By selling yourself, in an interview or an informal networking meeting, I mean thinking first about the employer's needs and expectations and figuring out how you can create value for their organization.

So ultimately, it means tapping into the employer's aspirations and reducing their anxieties as any new hire could be an expensive mistake.

When you think about self marketing as being about how to add value, what you need is a value proposition. The elements on this page: your summary profile, your career overview and your key strengths statements all become part of this approach. The ideal value proposition is concise and appeals to the customer's (the hiring manager's) strongest decision-making drivers. A value proposition is a short statement that tells your prospective boss why she should buy your skills and experience and your career overview self marketing statement, which is the real answer to 'tell me about yourself' should be exactly that; communicated effectively it will achieve optimal results.

Add Value Rather Than Taking...

A strong and differentiated value proposition can go a long way to position you to succeed in your target market as it opens the door so that someone might be willing to meet with you. It should create a strong differentiation between you and your competitors for the same job and align your background more closely to their needs, creating interest, so that your interviewer wants to learn more from you.
Focus on adding value to the prospective employer's organisation, rather than your own career goals and you will achieve a better end result.

What you must think about is POTENTIAL so don't just talk about past successes, although its a good indicator of future performance, you should identify clearly the areas where you can be more than what you already did, but what you will do.

Don't Panic And Get Your Job Search Under Control

Don't panic because if you have arrived at this site after you too have been downsized or made redundant, then I hope you will find it helpful. What I really want to say to you right now is, however difficult things may appear and however gloomy you think your career prospects are, DON'T PANIC.

The world is not going to collapse overnight and whatever happened YOU ARE STILL THE SAME PERSON as the day before it happened.

What I mean to say is that you still have all the skills and qualities you possessed before the redundancy and they will be needed by another employer!

In my case I’ve been through redundancy not once but twice so it’s become more familiar than I would have liked, yet this familiarity is what allows me to offer you some encouragement and advice.

When you are ready for job-search – and it will come – take stock of what specific professional and technical skills, both hard and soft, that you have already built up. Then think about the skills that you might need to gain or learn to get you back into play.

For some advertised jobs, you need to know about filling in a job application form. You may be asked to contact the employer to get a copy of the application form in the first instance, but if you need to fill in an application form to apply for the job, whether it's online or on paper, these are the main things to think about.

Many recruiters also ask graduates to apply using a standard application form so that they can compare candidates on a like-with-like basis by considering their approach to and completion of an identical form. They also use the form as part of your ongoing personnel record if you are offered a job. And don't forget that you will always be asked to sign the form to verify the truth and accuracy of information submitted, so don't lie on an application form - it will eventually be found out and you will lose your job.

always check and comply with the instructions for filling in the application form
take care to spell the name of the company correctly
prepare a rough draft of the application form first and then transfer the information to the actual form (paper forms)
re-read the job advert and make sure your information is relevant

don't ignore or omit any gaps in your employment history; say what you were doing during that time
include all relevant skills even if they are from outside work
