Filling the streets with live entertainment, carnival rides and much more, Rotaryfest provides the residents of the Sault with a weekend of fun and entertainment. The parade is a staple of Rotaryfest, and as a corporate sponsor, Essar Steel Algoma looks forward each year to submitting a float in the community day parade. Despite forecasted rain and thunderstorms for this past Saturday, the skies were clear and the sun was shining- a perfect day for a parade! Not that a cloudy skies forecast was dampening anyone’s spirit; all those participating in the parade knew that it never rains on a parade. The sweltering heat didn’t stop the thousands of people from lining <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">Queen Street</st1:address></st1:street> to catch a glimpse of Television Memories on Queen and join in the celebration. It was a hot walk for those who chose to walk- especially those donning a costume. Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Elmo, Bert and Ernie were troopers! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Leading our parade float was Oscar the Grouch, attached to the front of the transport. Keeping cool in his garbage can, he sneaked sporadic peeks at the crowd.

Thanks again to the Rotarians who bring this community together in celebration year after year and thank you to all of the talented and enthusiastic Essar Steel Algoma employees who helped to make everything A-OK.

See below for photos from parade day.

Once the parade ended on Saturday, something else very exciting was happening on <st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">Russ Ramsay Way</st1:address></st1:street>. The Rotary Arch was being unveiled. This arch has special significance to the City of Sault Ste. Marie because it pays homage to the history of Sault Ste. Marie. The Arch was originally built in 1937 and used to welcome those entering the Sault via ferry, including Queen Elizabeth herself. Essar Steel Algoma played a special role in the Rotary Arch coming to life, donating the steel and craftsmanship of our employees who built and erected this historic landmark.

Also, a special thank-you to Sterling Crane and Trans pro for their help in this project!

See below for photos from the unveiling ceremony.

ribbon about to be cut, left to right, Jim Hrusovsky, CEO, Essar Steel Algoma Inc. ; Debbie Amaroso, Mayor, City of Sault Ste. The Scholarship of Excellence is offered to local high school students who plan to continue their education at a university or college upon graduation. Recipients are selected based on academic performance, extracurricular activities and community involvement, and first consideration is given to a child, grandchild or legal ward of an Essar employee or retiree.

The Scholarship of Excellence program is made up of two scholarship opportunities: the Scholarship of Distinction (for students attending university) and the Scholarship of Merit (for students attending college). Students from all local high schools are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

This year, four outstanding students were chosen by our Scholarship Committee as recipients of this prestigious award:

Lucas Buffone- St. Basil- Scholarship of Distinction Recipient
Thomas Roy- St. Mary’s- Scholarship of Merit Recipient
Andrew Pozzebon- St. Mary’s- Scholarship of Merit Recipient
Maia Stevenson- White Pines- Scholarship of Distinction Recipient

Lucas, whose father Lou is a current employee of Essar Steel Algoma, plans to attend the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />University of Toronto in the fall and is enrolled in the life sciences program. Lucas has high hopes of attending medical school in the future and becoming a doctor in his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie. He sees this as a way of “giving back to the community”.

Thomas Roy is attending Sault College in the fall and is studying in the electrical engineering, process automation program. Like his father Ron Roy, Thomas hopes to one day work at Essar Steel Algoma. He says that the Scholarship of Excellence program will allow him to focus more on studying and not worrying so much about the financial aspect of attending school.

Andrew Pozzebon heard about the Scholarship of Excellence opportunity through his high school guidance councilor. He is moving to Sudbury in the fall to attend Cambrian College, where he will major in power engineering. Andrew plans to get his stationary engineering certificate and “return home and work in the Sault”. He also is grateful for the financial help that the scholarship provides, allowing him to focus more on school. Andrew’s grandfather Armando Pozzebon is a retiree of Essar Steel Algoma.

Maia Stevenson is attending McMaster University in the fall, and is majoring in arts and science. She plans to major in Psychology in her second year, and one day hopes to work in the psychology field. Her grandfather Luciano Morassut, a retiree of Essar Steel Algoma told her about the scholarship opportunity and encouraged her to apply. Maia says that being the recipient of the Scholarship of Distinction has “given her confidence going into her first year”. She finds it deeply encouraging that Essar Steel Algoma “trusts her to succeed in her academic career”. She also has a “sense of security knowing that she has support from the Sault”.

The Scholarship of Excellence program is renewable for the term of each student’s degree, and is subject to minimum performance requirements.

Essar Steel Algoma is sending best wishes to Lucas, Thomas, Andrew and Maia as they follow their dreams! We look forward to following their progress

Essar’s Steel Keeps Officers Safe

Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Tactical Team and Essar Steel Algoma employees exchange perspectives

Today inside our Heat Treated Plate facility here in Sault Ste. Marie, the local Police Service unveiled an impressive new armoured truck to add to their fleet of response and rescue vehicles. Essar Steel Algoma donated the armour plate used in the construction of the vehicle, and today’s event brought our steel full circle.

The Ballistic Armoured Tactical Transport will help protect officers during high-risk calls such as armed and barricaded persons inside buildings, high risk vehicle stops, execution of high risk warrants, gun calls, hostage takings and other serious incidents.

Essar Steel Algoma is proud to play a supporting role in the safety of our police officers and the security of our community. We are also excited to share this investment with those employees who make the armour plate.

At today’s event, officers from the Tactical Team had a chance to see first hand how the armour plate is made and to meet some of the employees who made the steel. For our employees, the event provided a rare opportunity to examine an end use application up close, and to meet the customers whose lives will be protected by their steel.

To read the Sault Ste. Essar’s prestigious Scholarship of Excellence program gives preference to a child, grandchild, or legal ward of a current or retired Essar employee or retiree.

The Scholarship of Excellence debuted last year and three recipients were selected. Nicolas Turco (St. Mary’s) and Olivia Christie (Korah) received the Scholarship of Distinction, while Stephen Lajambe (CASS) was selected for the Scholarship of Merit. Olivia Christie is attending the University of Western, Ontario where she is studying nursing. She tells us that she is “enjoying university life but that it is a lot of hard work!” Nicolas Turco is attending the University of Waterloo and is enrolled in Arts and Business. Nic says that he is “majoring in legal studies and is really enjoying the program”. He also says that “the Essar Steel Scholarship of Excellence is an extremely helpful resource that has enabled me to move forward on my future career path and I appreciate it even more now that I am having the awesome experience that university provides”. Stephen Lajambe is enrolled at Cambrian College in Sudbury in their electrical program. Stephen maintained a 4.0 this year and says that he is “working extremely hard to get another one this semester”.

March 31st is the application deadline. Applications can be submitted to the guidance councilor at the student’s high school, or dropped off at the front desk of the Human Resources building at Essar Steel Algoma.

Tell the student in your life today about this exciting opportunity!

Essar Steel Algoma's 2nd Annual Food Drive proves to be a success!

Last year Essar Steel Algoma Inc. started up a corporate initiative to give back to the communtity...the One CAN Make a Difference Food Drive. But we require change.

To do this there are certain changes that the Company requires.

At 2 pm today the Company presented a settlement offer to the bargaining committee for USW Local 2724. This offer affects all USW 2724 and includes some certain provisions specific only to Front Line Supervisors (FLS).

This settlement offer includes some changes from the offer we shared with you yesterday.

THIS HAS NOT CHANGED

For all USW 2724 members:
· 3.5 % wage increase over three years,
· Continuing COLA rolled in quarterly throughout the life of the agreement,
· Extending the pension windows,
· Introducing a defined contribution pension plan for new hires,
· Increasing the shift premium and boot allowance, and
· Improvements to extended health benefits.

For the FLS’ only:
· A one-time salary increase of 5% for all FLS in operating and maintenance roles,
· Two additional “C” days for all FLS,
· Giving FLS the right to receive the special discretionary bonus provided to exempt staff, and
· At the Company’s discretion improved health care benefits to FLS.

These FLS’ only improvements are in recognition of the following changes to FLS only:
· Enhancing the Company’s ability to fully utilize each FLS’ talent and abilities to maximize operational and succession planning goals,
· Providing that FLS may not serve in a formal union capacity due to the legally recognized inherent conflict of interest between union and management responsibilities, and

THIS HAS CHANGED

For FLS’ only:
· Overtime compensation will be paid when the 8 hours between 40 and 48 are worked consecutively. In the event that they are not worked consecutively there is no overtime up to 48 hours worked in a week, and for hours worked beyond 48 in a week, “C” time or overtime will be paid at the option of the FLS.

· Before any FLS’ employment is terminated, the decision must be reviewed and approved by the department Vice President, the Vice President Human Resources, the Vice President Legal and the Chief Executive Officer. In the case of dismissal without just cause, an FLS will receive either severance of up to 18 months salary or may be reassigned by the Company to an alternate position in ESSAR Steel Algoma.

For all of USW 2724:
· A contract term of 2.5 years, with a proposed expiry of January 31, 2013. We do not have the ability to stop and restart our operations and therefore need to take measures to ensure the preservation of the assets so that in the event of a labour disruption there is a business to go back to. A 2.5 year term ensures that at minimum the integrity of the assets will always be preserved in the event of a labour dispute with either union local.

We don’t want a strike. But we require change.

The fact remains that the Company needs to be competitive. The steel business has changed and will continue to change and ESSAR Steel Algoma needs to be able to adapt to these changes so we can be competitive.

This settlement offer is the best balance between achieving that competitiveness and recognizing the role our employees play in the organization.

Negotiations Update re: L2724

By Jim Rennie, Chief Negotiator

The Company is now three days from the strike deadline with USW Local 2724, the union representing our technical, professional and front line management employees. It is becoming increasingly clear that we will not reach a collective agreement and will face a labour disruption on August 1, 2010.

In an effort to achieve a collective agreement, the Company has given Local 2724 a full offer. The highlights of the offer are:

· 3.5 % wage increase over three years,
· Continuing COLA rolled in quarterly throughout the life of the agreement,
· Extending the pension windows,
· Introducing a defined contribution pension plan for new hires,
· Increasing the shift premium and boot allowance, and
· Improvements to extended health benefits.

You can read the Company’s full offer here. We encourage you to read this.

This same offer was overwhelmingly accepted by the members of Local 2251 in last night’s ratification vote.

In return for these enhancements we need to make changes to the collective agreement to allow us to be competitive with all other North American steel producers.

Every one of these changes are part of the existing terms and conditions of employment of all of the major steel producers.

Here are the changes:

JOB POSTINGS

Everything remains the same with continued promotion and movement opportunities for employees except the Company (not the Union) determines the legitimate qualifications required for the job.

The successful candidate will now be selected on the basis of qualifications, skill, ability and previous work experience. If these factors are relatively equal between candidates, seniority will govern.
This is how it is done in all other major competitors. We need to catch up to them.

Details can be found in Addendum 3, page 24 of the offer.

SHARED SERVICES

We need changes to the collective agreement that allow us to benefit from and contribute to the shared services of the ESSAR Group.

Our competitors have global affiliations that give them greater access to raw materials, research and development, technology and international talent pools. This access allows ESSAR Steel Algoma experts to contribute to special projects throughout the ESSAR Group and conversely, gives us the benefit of access to expertise in other areas of the ESSAR Group. Cost savings achieved and productivity gains realized through shared services are essential to help make ESSAR Steel Algoma more competitive.

No employee will be laid off due to shared services and in case of reassignment to a new job salary rate is protected.

Details can be found in Addendum 2, page 19 of the offer.

FRONT LINE SUPERVISORS (FLS)

Every other steelmaker in North America has their front line supervisors fully engaged with the management of their business and have conditions of employment similar to all management staff. That’s not the case at ESSAR Steel Algoma and that needs to change for us to be truly competitive.

We have proposed nothing different from what exists elsewhere and in some cases the proposals are superior to our competitors.

The following compensation improvements have been offered;
· A one-time salary increase of 5% for all FLS in operating and maintenance roles,
· Two additional “C” days for all FLS,
· Giving FLS the right to receive the special discretionary bonus provided to exempt staff, and
· At the Company’s discretion, improved health care benefits for FLS.

These are in recognition of proposed changes to FLS work terms including:
· Enhancing the Company’s ability to fully utilize each FLS’ talent and abilities to maximize operational and succession planning goals,
· Providing that FLS may not serve in a formal union capacity due to the legally recognized inherent conflict of interest between union and management responsibilities,
· In the case of dismissal without just cause, an FLS will receive either severance of up to 18 months salary or reassignment by the Company to an alternate position in ESSAR Steel Algoma, and
· No overtime up to 48 hours worked in a week, with “C” time or overtime pay at FLS option for hours worked over 48.

Details can be found in Addendum 5, page 33 of the offer.

If you have questions about this offer, email us at intheknow@essar.com There in the midst of this raucous celebration was the Essar Spirit – Live on Queen, moving to the beat of Four Way Stop, a talented team of musicians featuring Essar’s very own Jim Scali, and friends Rick Rogers, Nick Scali and Bob Yeomans. Thanks to the talents of our employees, this year’s entry staged an array of Caribanna-style costumes and musical accessories. Leading the charge were our saxophone toting Jazz Fish, swaying to the tunes of Jimmy Buffet and dodging the spray from our fun loving children who helped to keep the crowd cool with their super soakers. Our spirited team of employees and their offspring were so engaged with the crowd they could easily have kept on going down Queen Street all the way to the Plant gates!

Special thanks to the judges who saw it fit to honour our entry with First Prize Professional. Looking back at the array of photo galleries and video footage from the parade you can’t help but feel the community spirit this event spawns. We were among friends and we have RotaryFest to thank for the experience.

Kudos to the Rotarians who led the charge and brought this community together in celebration, and to the many who lent a hand along the way – we are indebted. The Company is looking to negotiate agreements that ensure the viability, sustainability and continued success of this operation for many generations to come. It comes as no surprise to anyone who reads the Sault media or follows steel that the financial and operational pressures in the steel industry persist. Not the least among these are the increasingly volatile raw material costs.

These pressures weigh heavy as we go through the process of contract negotiations. Finding the balance between a fair and reasonable settlement that reflects the importance of our employees and the realities of the steel industry is challenging. In spite of this we are working towards achieving fair settlements.

We believe that for both USW locals our proposals reflect these realities.

For USW Local 2251, the Local representing our hourly employees, this means we are seeking ways to optimize productivity and to ensure our competitive performance in an increasingly consolidated, global steel industry. Discussions to date have been constructive in this regard and talks are now moving to monetary issues.

For USW Local 2724, which represents the front line supervisors, technical and professional staff, this also includes making changes that will put us on par with our peers in the industry.

Among the items in our proposals to USW 2724 is the need to amend the work terms for our front line supervisors, who are our front line management personnel, in a way that makes us competitive within our industry. Although we understand how this situation evolved it must be corrected.

We invest a great deal in our front line management personnel and we need to be able to guide their respective career path. Current contractual restrictions within the bargaining unit limit their mobility, creating operating inefficiencies and limiting opportunities for professional development.

There is a tremendous talent pool at ESSAR Steel Algoma Inc. and within the ESSAR Group which all global operations benefit from being able to access. With this in mind, our Local 2724 proposals also contain some provision for shared services and for sharing tasks among the Essar group of companies where it is most economical and makes the most business sense. The revisions we are seeking include safeguards for current employees ensuring no employee job is affected by shared services.

In terms of our competitive advantage, no other competitor is prevented from using the economy of shared services to reduce its costs with appropriate protections for existing employees. What we seek is a level playing field.

These important issues are critical to the ongoing viability of the Company, and they are not going away. The sooner we enter into meaningful discussions with Local 2724 on these issues, the sooner we can arrive at solutions that all parties can support.

Congratulations to our first Scholarship of Excellence Recipients!

Left to Right: Nicholas Turco, Stephen Lajambe, Olivia Christie

Essar Steel Algoma launched its Scholarship of Excellence program in March of this year. This academic initiative is offered to local high school students who will continue their education at university or college upon graduation. Academic performance, community involvement, and extracurricular involvement are the key qualities considered when choosing a successful candidate. First consideration is given to a child, grandchild, or legal ward of an Essar employee or retiree. Most importantly, the Scholarship of Excellence offers students in our community an academically and personally rewarding growth opportunity.

The Scholarship of Distinction is awarded to university bound students while the Scholarship of Merit is given to those who elect the college route. Both are renewable for the term of their degree or diploma, subject to minimum performance requirements.

This year’s call for applicants was met with great enthusiasm and the Scholarship Committee narrowed the candidates down to three special recipients.

Nicolas Turco is a graduate of St. Mary’s College and an Ontario Scholar. With his Scholarship of Distinction he plans to study arts and business at the University of Waterloo in the fall.

Olivia Christie hails from Korah Collegiate where she graduated as an Ontario Scholar and an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate. Maybe it was luck, or maybe a full 24 hours of hoping for clear skies, but the proposed rain for Saturday June 12th held off, turning this year’s Dragon Boat Festival into a fun, memorable day of relaxing, socializing, and of course…paddling. With a drummer channeling the aura of Jack Sparrow, and a steersman instilling the fear of an army sergeant, we were bound for greatness!

Joking aside, although Essar’s Iron Oresmen didn’t officially win, team members put in a valiant effort and walked away from the experience feeling the goodness of volunteerism, the warmth of camaraderie, and personal triumph. Collectively, they raised $1,165 in pledges in support of the Sault Search and Rescue and the YMCA.

We proudly salute the 2010 Essar Iron Oresman for their show of spirit - Paddles Up!

<img style="DISPLAY: block;

Further to Bob Mihell’s articles of April 21st and 28th in Sault This Week on the topic of the Ministry of Environment’s (MOE) Co-Location Study, we feel it necessary to formally respond.

To begin, the headline “Essar reporting exceedances for carcinogens” is not only inflammatory, but factually incorrect. Contrary to Sault This Week’s claim that the MOE’s Co-Location report shows Essar in violation of provincial limits for benzene and benzo(a)pyrene, let me be clear - Essar Steel Algoma is not in violation of any provincial limits for benzene or benzo-a-pyrene. In fact, there are no regulated limits or standards for benzene or benzo(a)pyrene in Ontario, only recommended guidelines. In the absence of an established regulatory standard, Essar has been proactively working in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment to set site specific performance standards and we continue to strive towards reducing emission levels as technology becomes available. Essar has plans in place to address emissions from our Cokemaking operations and will share these at our upcoming Community Open House this month.

Furthermore, Essar does not operate the air monitoring stations situated around our property. A third party consultant does. Nor do we analyse the results. An MOE approved accredited laboratory performs the analysis and does so in accordance with MOE specified protocols.

The Co-Location Study’s only conclusion is that the results of the study are inconclusive, and I quote, “No consistent trend was found for the inter-laboratory comparison study …It’s hard to draw a conclusion from the preliminary results on the inter-laboratory comparison study at this stage. The reason of consistent lower values reported by CRA than those by MOE remains unexplained.” In short, the 21 page report concludes that the analysis generated by the MOE’s lab does not match the set of results produced by the MOE approved lab.

We find this discrepancy disconcerting and the team at Essar Steel Algoma needs to know the reasons behind the discrepancies. To this end, we have already initiated inquires with the labs in question. It is important that we have accurate, quality data with which to manage our operation, and minimize its impact on the environment.
At the end of the day, what matters most to us is what is in the air and the soil and how best to manage our operations to minimize emissions while making steel and generating economic value for our owners, our employees and our community. Essar Steel Algoma has launched an aggressive campaign to reduce emissions and we continue to achieve aggressive targets in this regard. Over the past five years, Essar has invested $200M towards environmental improvements and a further $75M has been committed for additional environmental initiatives. In light of these significant gains and demonstrated commitment, we need to ensure the above clarifications are communicated to the public. Failure to do so would be irresponsible and counterproductive.
The team at Essar recognizes there is more that can and will be done. We live in this community too and we raise our families here. We are committed to advancing a continued positive approach to environmental stewardship.

Respectfully,

Jerry Suurna

Prior to India’s independence in 1947, Rajasthan was ruled by 22 families – the Maharanas (Hindu) and the Moguls (Muslim) of the Indian empire. The city of Udaipur was founded by King Udai Singh, a great warrior whose dynasty was the only Rajasthan entity never to be controlled by a foreign power; retaining independence even under the British rule.

Upon arrival in Udaipur, the families were shuttled to a lakeside jetty where they were greeted with warm hand towels, cool beverages and a boat to ferry them across the calm waters of Lake Pichola to the opulent splendor of their hotel – the Taj Lake Palace. A white marble and mosaic palace spread across a four-acre island, this summer home was built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh И, the 62nd successor to the royal Mewar dynasty. The Palace offers all contemporary comforts against a regal backdrop of sculptures, fountains, gardens and pristine views. Our weary travelers alighted from their shuttle to a shower of rose petals and the dignified and doting hospitality of the Royal Butlers –descendents of the original palace retainers.

While in Udaipur, the families explored the City Palace and the colourful bazaars at the heart of the city, including an educational demonstration on the famous Udaipur art of Pichwai painting. During their last night in this majestic city, the families dined aboard a Gangaui, an antique ceremonial imperial barge. From this unique floating vantage point, they were treated to a traditional dance performance on the balcony of the City Palace and a personal fireworks display – an evening truly befitting of royalty and reserved for our Essarites.
