Millennium DGs- Sustainable Development Goals

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the Global Development Goals will be serialized and discussed in this forum for the consumption of readers. The SDGs cover a wide range of issues that should form the basis of any country's development. The developmental index of any nation is measured on how far they have achieved the above index for their citizens. The following are the indices from which each country can measure their development. 1.Eradication of hunger. Has the country been able to provide enough food for her citizens. 2.Promoting good health. Has the country provided enough and affordable health care for her citizens. Are the citizens healthy in body and soul? 3.Quality Education. Do all her citizens have access to good and qualitative education? The answers to these questions will definitely define the focus of each country's development. Development must be citizen centred. This is why the United Nations graduated from the eight millennium development goals to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The lives of the citizens must reflect what is on ground. In other words the level of development the country has reached must reflect in her citizens. For instance, a country cannot say that they have achieved goal number 2 of providing good health where most of her citizens do not have access to good health care services. And a country could not be said to have achieved goal number 1 of eradicating hunger when up to 70% of its citizens are wallowing in poverty and cannot afford three square meals a day. The index of development is the quality of life of the citizens and this is why the United nations brought out these 17 sustainable goals to gauge how far the eight millennium development goals(already enumerated last time in my blog) has been achieved by each country. i have now started another series of discussion on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and we shall continue serializing the Goals until I have given you all the 17 SDGs. Goal number 4 is Gender equality. Has the country's allowed women the necessary freedom. Have they been given equal opportunity in education? This question may be answered in the positive in the case of Nigeria where many women are in the field of education. But have they been given equal opportunity in political affairs? Each country has to answer the above questions to gauge how far they have achieved goal 4 above. The series continues in my next post

WAEC Literature: Bigger Thomas in Native Son

The concept of alienation played a lot in the life of Bigger Thomas. This is a boy whose sensibilities have been smeared by the racial prejudice in which he grew up. His service in the house of mr and mrs Dalton is not with any amount of job satisfaction. And this is why he does his work as a chauffeur with resignation which eventually led the tragedy that befell the Dalton family later in the novel. Bigger is billed to drive Mary Dalton to the university that evening but Mary behaving like a spoilt child directs their to her boy friend Jan who takes her to a restaurant that Saturday evening where they got drunk and Bigger has to bring her home in the night. At home Bigger starts touching her breast, but the blind mrs Dalton enters the room and in an attempt to hide his action, Bigger places a pillow on the face of Mary to prevent her from talking and create an illusion that no one is in the room. This action led to the accidental death of Mary and Bigger becomes guilty of murder. It can be stated that the murder of Mary is a dramatic release of pent up feelings of Biger Thomas grown over the years emanating from a series of indignities suffered by the blacks at the hands of the white man .Even the government prosecutor at the trial of Bigger Thomas is latently aware of this without obvious statement of that fact.The Coroner pretended ignorance of this but the self-appointed defender of the culprit drew heavily on that knowledge in his attempt to ameliorate the crime and at least secure a jail term for Bigger Thomas instead of death sentence. There are two focal points of murder hanging on the neck of Bigger Thomas. It will be recalled that in his attempt to hide the fact that he killed Mary Dalton he has to kill his girlfriend Bessie who was so hysterical in her reaction to the murder of Mary Dalton. But in the ensuing trial nothing much is heard of the murder of Bessie. The accusation is that he killed a white lady, which means that if it is only Bessie that he killed, there might even have been no trial. This is why racial prejudice and racism should be condemned in all its ramifications. The WAEC Literary series continues.

Sexual abuse remains an abhorred subject both locally and internationally. The show of pornography both in electronic and print media is one sure method of sexual abuse. Human beings are not animals and should not live as such. The sanctity of human body must be maintained by all and sundry. It becomes so nauseating to see men and women making themselves naked and showing such naked bodies to the public.Exposure of such naked bodies to public glare is one sure way of arousing in the individuals the urge for inordinate sex.Such urge thus leads to sexual abuse. Suffice it to say that there are other causes of sexual abuse such as poor family upbringing , bad character formation, peer to peer imbibed habit and express disobedience to the law of God concerning sexual relations. Sexual abuse reduces man to the level of animals and must be avoided in all its ramifications. There are dire consequences of sexual abuse.We are not talking here about gay marriage which of course is number one sexual abuse .It may interest you to know that homosexuality which is at the root of gay marriage is one of the sins that led to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorah in the Bible. See Genesis 18 and 19. The dire consequences of sexual abuse starts here on earth. First such abuses can lead the culprit into contacting sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis,staphlococus, AIDS and other deadly diseases.And the result of all this can mean untimely for the people indulging in sexual abuse or unbridled sex. The solution for the above problem is to repent and turn to our Lord Jesus Christ who only can save you from all your sins including the sin of sexual abuse so that you can escape hell fire in the end.For the end of your life will come one day

2014 FIFA World Cups

The 2014 FIFA World took place in Brazil from June to July 13 . What lessons did Nigeria learn from our not very good performance? We lacked proper formation and team work in that match. It seems that each player was trying hard to be the goal scorer and the whole thing ended up in the lacklustre performance. But it is important for us to learn fromhistory against future events. We have a formidable football team in Nigeria. What we need is artistic approach to the issue. Team work is one of the artistic approach we should use in future football matches so as to maintain our leading position in world football. Again we must note that a miss is as good as a mile.Again nearly does not kill a bed. Again it is not over until it is over. These are the fundamental lessons our players should learn to put into practice in future encounters. Let me give us a practical example referring to what happened in 1994 World cup. In that year the slot fell on Nigeria and Italy to play in the semi-finals. Nigerian team played aggressively and scored the first goal and defended that goal until towards the end of the match. The Italian team were making frantic efforts to equalize because the score line has been 1-0 against the Italians. And Nigerian team maintained that position until the 88th minute. At this point the Nigerian team relaxed in their defense thinking that it is over. They have forgotten that it is not over until is over. Again resilience comes into play here. It will take a determined heart to hold tenaciously to your position and and defense until it is over. In that match the Italians held to their defense and determination to equalize and they achieved it. So I want us to learn the above lessons of resilience and determination in all our athletic and football outings. This year's world cup is dominated by the Germans defeating Argentina 1-0 in Brazil on July 13 and defeating Nigeria 1-0 in FIFA under 20 Female world cup in Canada on August 24.

Political Theory concepts are anchored on many indices which determine political activities the world over. On such concepts is based is the ideology of zoning.Of course the idea of zoning is predicated on the multiplicity of ethnic groups that constitute the human environment. This again is consonance with Federal system of government that is most suitable a nation that is made up of many ethnic groups or races. And this is aimed at giving everybody an equal opportunity to participate in the governance of that state. Democracy as we have the legacy from the Greeks is government of the people by the people and for the people. Based on the above premise zoning becomes the best option for pushing tentacles of government to reach every section of the state or nation. To the major ethnic group in any political situation, zoning may not go down well because of the nature of human beings who believe in the winner takes all. But being fair to all means that political offices be so distributed so as to accommodate all.The principle of democracy espouses this ideology for the good and improvement of man. It is this principle that has been fostering the needed unity in different parts of the world including Nigeria

The Biafra Aftermath

The quest to realize the Republic of Biafra has come a long way. The primary reason for that quest is to maintain peaceful coexistence with our Nigerian neighbours. And the misunderstanding of the actual reasonms for that quest led to the thirty .month civil war with its attendant bloodshed,the aim of which on the Nigerian side is to end the the Biafran dream. Unfortunately the conditions that triggered off the Nigerian Civil war is still with us today even attracting International attention.The level of terrorism in Nigeria today is nauseating and has negated whatever good intentions those who frustrated the Biafran cause might have. It is an irony of history that what the Igbo people wanted to prevent some 43 years ago by declaring their own independent state was still happening today in Nigeria and that with reckless abandon. In the court of moral justice are all the people who vehemently opposed the Biafran Idependence only to witness the level of terrrorism unknown in Nigeria of the sixties. Be that as it may peaceful coexistence is what we preach after the demise of Biafra some 43 years but that peace has remained elusive because those who are bent on terror do not want to hear. But we are begging them to lay down their arms becauise the nation cannot make any meaningful growth without peace. And moreover foreign investors cannot come here to establish their industries and companies in an atmosphere charged with terrorist activities. We therefore enjoin all gadiators and perpetrators of this evil called terrrorism to sheathe their swords because Nigeria as a nation has come to be .And it will not pay any body any good dividend to continue to destabilse the nation through terrorist activities. In summary we want to state categorically that Biafra fought a just cause to end man's inhumanity to man.But the world so Biafra then as not doing the right thing and hence the encpsulation of Biafra by their unbridled support to the Nigeria side of the conflict.And the peace Biafra has wanted to maintain by embarking on that conflict was thwarted by Nigeria and her supporters.Therefore peace remains elusive in the country many years after the civil war.

Pragmatism should be the watch word in any educational endeavour.This means that educational planners all over the world must focus on the workability of their plans according to their peculiar environment. This means that environment plays an important part for the success of any educational plan. The sum total of environment both includes the physical environment and the social and economic environment. There are a number of factors that account for the success of any educational plan such as availability of funds, the nature of available infrastructure, the manpower needs such as the availability of teachers for various subjects. Until all the above factors are considered and taken care of, pragmatic educational plan may remain a utopia existing on paper only.The main point of this essay is to state it clearly that nations all over the world should take a pragmatic approach in their educational plans.This will create an enabling environment for the success of all their educational plans.

Salvation Only Through Christ

Right from the dawn of history humanity's problem has been the problem of sin.Man has been able to conquer space by landing on the moon. For instance in April 1961 the first man landed on the moon.He is the Russian Yuri Gagarin. A few days later an American spacecraft [manned] landed on the moon and the astronaut walked on the moon.

But man has not been able to solve the problem of sin.But thank God that He has given us a way out of sin .That Way is Jesus Christ the Son of the living God.In the gospel of John Jesus says ' I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved,...' and in Hebrews 9.22 the Bible says 'And almost all things are by the law purged with blood and without shedding of blood is no remission.' So it is the blood of Jesus that will wash away all your sins if you will obey the gospel preached by Christ himself in Mark chapter 1 verse 15 where he says '...repent ye and believe the gospel'

Repentance means turning away from all your sins and confessing the sins already committed to God and begging Him to forgive you. Note our quotation in Hebrews above that without shedding of blood there is no remission[forgiveness]. So that when you repent God will forgive you for Christ sake.He will wash away your sins in His Christ blood.Then you start living a new life free from sin so that you escape hell fire in the end. See also Hebrews 10.14 where the Bible says 'For by one offering he has perfected for ever those that are sanctified'. And in 2Corinthians 5.21 we read 'For our sake he was made sin who knew no sin that we might be made God's righteousness in him'. So in Christ you are made righteous if you repent and trust in him to save you. Pray this prayer now for the Lord is at hand, 'O Lord God, I repent of my sins now [confess them one by one to God], please Lord, Jesus come into my heart and make me God's own righteousness with thy blood' I pray in Jesus name. The Mother Board houses the memory capacity of the computer.This is an important part of the CPU.The CPU contains the memory and the Arithmetic Logic Unit [A L U]

The function of the mouse is to send data into the computer. It is an input device that sends data into the computer.The keyboard is also an input device that sends data into the computer.The Scanner is another component part of the computer.It is also an input device that traces or x-rays pictures,certificates or any other document into the computer in its original form. English Grammar: Concept of Abstract Nouns

Abstract nouns as the name implies, exist in the abstract. They are nouns that you cannot touch physically. Students of English must note that sentence formation with abstract nouns also require verbal agreement. For instance, to make sentence with the word ' knowledge' , the verb must be singular: one can say 'Knowledge is power' . Here the verb ' is ' agrees with the subject ' knowledge ' which is an abstract noun.

Next, look at the following sentence: ' Wisdom is required for success in any human endeavour ' . For the purpose of this discussion , ' wisdom ' and ' success ' are abstract nouns placed in the above grammatical context. They obey all the rules guiding sentence formation with nouns. In the above sentence ' wisdom ' is the subject of the verb ' is ' . And ' success ' is the object of the preposition ' for ' . A person who puts the verb ' succeed ' in place of the noun ' success ' in the above grammatical context would have committed a grammatical blunder. Equally if the verb ' wise ' is substituted for the abstract noun ' wisdom ' in the above sentence, then the student has made an incorrect sentence, grammatically speaking.

It is therefore to be very carefully noted by all speakers and users of the English Language that basic grammatical rules of agreement must be observed when making sentences involving abstract nouns.

The Working of the Nervous System

The brain is the centre of the nervous system. This article will centre on the brain as the centre of the nervous system. All the nervous responses from all the five senses are directly linked to the brain. They all have direct relation to the working of the brain. The antecedents of high productivity,creativity, relaxation and pure energy are all functions of the brain.

The brain itself is made up of billions of brain cells called neurons. These neurons communicate with each other with electrical speed. For instance if someone looks at a red cloth, there are certain internetworking of signals that work together to interpret first of all that this is a piece of cloth and another level of interpretation stating that the colour is red. Here the sense of sight is working with the brain to interpret the colour as red. All this takes place within seconds. We marvel at the wonderful creation of God. If you touch something that is cold, the signal is sent to the brain for the one to feel cold and interpret it as such. From the foregoing it is clear that the brain is really the centre of the nervous system.

Oral English- Theoretical Orientation

Oral English is otherwise called Spoken English. This concept is based on the phoneme theory. First of all let us define a phoneme.What is a phoneme? Phonologically speaking ,the phoneme is the smallest distinctive unit of sound. In other words sound units are called phonemes. They are distinctive and this is one major characteristic that phonemes have.What do we mean when we say that phonemes are distinctive? This means that phonemes are reciprocally exclusive.

This means that two different phonemes cannot occur in the same linguistic environment.For example in the word 'bed' the medial vowel sound is \e\ and it is distinctive. It remains \e\ and any attempt to replace it with another phoneme and still retain the original meaning of the word 'bed' is impossible.Once another phoneme is used to replace the phoneme in the original word, in this case 'bed', the meaning of the word automatically changes. This is the main characteristic of phonemes and students and undergraduates in universities must study this theory very well to grasp the total message.Oral English is fundamental to the study of English Language and this is why some examining bodies like NECO and WAEC have made Oral English a compulsory part of their English Language examination.

English Grammar... Nominalization

What is nominaliztion? This is the act of turning words and phrases into nouns.In this lecture I shall teach you how words like ' strong, long, beautiful,late and so on' can be turned into nouns.When these words are turned into nouns their grammatical context also changes.This brings us to another grammatical component called 'Inflecxion'. What is inflexion? Inflexion is a change in the form of a word to show change of meaning.And this is why I said above that once a word has undergone nominalization, that is when it is changed to a noun it aquires a shade of meaning and its grammatical context automatically changes.

For instance in the sentence 'The building is a long one'. Here the word 'long' is an adjective qualifying the noun 'one' that represents the building.But if 'long' is changed to a noun it becomes 'length' and its grammatical context changes.For instance you cannot speak or write 'The building is a 'length' one'.This is a wrong sentence because the word 'length' is an abstract noun' .So the correct sentence becomes 'The length of the building is big'. The grammatical context has changed because of a change in the form of the word ' long'.It has turned to 'strength'. To be continued

Oral English has become a part of WAEC Engish Language examination. It is therefore pertinent to note that the candidates who want to make credits in their Waec or NECO examination on English must aim at a good knowledge of Oral English.It must also be noted that the knowledge of Oral Engish is not limited to any of these public examinations.The function of oral English is to help individuals know how to pronounce words of English in daily life.This writer did Oral English as a full course in the university and is therefore very much qualified to talk authoritatively on the subject. And the facts I present are verifiable and readers are enjoined to make more research and come up with any new ideas as we know that learning is a continuos process.And again no one is a repository of knowledge.Therefore I welcome any useful comments on any of my articles.

The English Language has 44 sound units called phonemes.The following contain the facts of the sound units and the examples that will help the students to have adequate grasp of English phonemes.There are 12 pure vowels and eight diphthongs.The following are the examples of the vowels.
1. /a / as in back, pack, pat,man,lack, brag,bat,lag,sat,fat,nagging etc.
2. / i/ as in sit, fit, pit, nip, kick, fin, lit, pick, lick, sin, lip,etc.
3. /i: / as in seat,feet, yeast, feast, leak, least, meet, seek, free, feed, etc.
4. / e / as in get, set, led, red, leg, said, says, neck, bed, deck, desk, guest, etc
5. / a: / as in park, shark, palm, balm, car, mark, laugh, class, etc.
6. / o / as in pot, lot, lock, dock, knock, rot, cock, cot, not, hot, etc.
7. / u / as in put, book, look, etc.

Psychological and socio-psychological aspects of colonialism can be seen in the overall colonial situation.There is psychological alienation and social alienation.There is also the economic alienation.The concept of alienation as evolved by Marx can be applied to the colonial situation and whether the colonies or the countries of the Third World in general, can be aptly analysed with reference to the economic categories Marx derived from capitalist commodity production. According to Marx, precapitalist forms of production are characterised by the fact that the individuals as members of a community own the means of production, primarily the land. Under precapitalist conditions of production, mainly articles of utility are produced, and payments in kind outweighs payments in money.

Romance may be defined as true relationship between a man and a woman.There are little things that matter in romancing with your partner.Those things include smiles,body language, fondlings,cuddling,kissing and other sweet nothings.You will be able to be smiling for your man or woman.Such smiles have the disarming effect energising and fuelling your love feelings towards each other.Sustained love is important in romance and if love is sustained between you and your partner,you draw closer together, thus avoiding looking the other way round and thus avoiding promiscuity.And with the avoidance of promiscuity the incidents of HIV/AIDS can be reduced.You see from this analysis how true romance can help to reduce AIDS scourge.

Another method of true romance is through body language.You should not be ashamed to show your partner through body language that the spot where he has touched you is giving you good pleasure.This can make him to increase the touch so that you are immediately transported to a pleasurable orgasmic level for the mutual pleasure of both of you.Again you will be able to be fondling each other while relaxing,that is you touch each other lovingly.This is for the mutual pleasure of both of you.True romance is therefore sustained by using the above methods of love making.

Literature is a branch of learning that concerns itself with creativity.Evolution of lierary theory is really to discuss how literature functions.In this article I will concentrate on structuralism which concerns itself with the relationships of grammatical items in the text.There is also surface structure and deep structure in literary analysis. Surface structure refers to the physical arrangement of chapters and scenes in a given work of art. For instance Macbeth is a five part structure consisting of five Acts. But the deep structure here refers to the thematic arrangement where we talk about the victory of Macbeth,his promotion by Duncan and his eventual downfall after the murder of Duncan

It is stated that structural narratology is 'a form of structuralism espoused by Vladimir and Genette that illustrates how a story's meaning develops from its overall structured isolated theme. To ascertain a text's meaning, narratologists emphasize grammatical relationships and configurations of figures of speech within the story' (Bressle).This brings us to the issue of structuralism and semiotics.Semiotics is the science of signs.It is the use of verbal signs and structures to depict meaning. For instance, in the sentence ' I need water', the word 'water' here is a sign or signifier that represents the physical element 'water' that people drink.That physical element is called the referent or the signified.I have just explained semiotics, the sign language as embedded in structuralism.

It is said that the society prepares a crime and the criminal commits it. Again it is said that prevention is better than cure. From the first premise the government anywhere can help the youths by employment generation.This can be done through functional education.When youths are educated properly, they can become self employed in later life instead of recourse to crime thus reducing the incidents of crime in society.

Government can also build industries to absorb the teeming population.When people are gainfully employed incidents of crime can be reduced.Agricultural production is a good area of employment generation.The government can encourage the youths to engage in agriculture by giving soft loans to farmers.In so doing they make agriculture attractive to the youths and this will help to reduce crime rate.It is necssary to apply all the above mechanisms in order to prevent crime in society.The money used to effect the above solutions is really a good investment in human capital development.The youths are a good asset to government and no rational government can afford to allow her youths to be wasted away in criminal activities.

From the foregoing the crux of crime prevention lies in helping the youths to make the necssary social and economic adjustments to the society in which they find themselves.
