Rishabh Pant slammed his first fifty of IPL 2024 against Chennai Super Kings as the Delhi Capitals captain signalled his comeback to form at Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Pant got to his 50 off just 31 balls before getting out in the next ball itself while attempting to his Matheesha Pathirana for a chip straight down the ground. Pant mistimed his shot and ended up offering a swirling catch to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who caught it after running in from long-off.

However, Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan executed their yorkers and wide lines superbly to deny DC, winning by 12 runs and stretching the streak for home sides to nine wins out of nine matches

STUBBS KEEPS DELHI ALIVE

A superb carrom ball in the 17th over has Tristan Stubbs mis-hitting to deep midwicket. That is the game right there for RR, but Trent Boult drops him. Stubbs then goes on to rub salt into the wound by hitting successive sixes off R Ashwin. DC now need 41 off the last three. There is Axar Patel with Stubbs. The game is in the balance again.

CHAHAL REMOVES PANT

Not that Rishabh Pant has got his T20 rhythm back but he is still a big wicket because if he stays there till the end, he can hurt RR. Yuzvendra Chahal, though, doesn't allow him that chance. A slow slider across Pant, and he nicks it through even through he does delay the shot. It's 105 for 4 at the start of the 14th. RR firm favourites now.

Pace is in. In his 100th IPL match, Rishabh Pant has won the toss and decided to field first. Both the captains wanted to bowl first when there is no dew or less dew. In Jaipur, this is also the time when you can take advantage of a slow pitch.

Great news that Anrich Nortje is back. It might have been an interesting choice in terms of whom to leave out but Shai Hope's back spasms made it an easy call for them.

Bad news that Ishant Sharma, who didn't finish his spell last match, is still not match fit. Mukesh Kumar comes in for him. It might seem odd that they have replaced a batter and a bowler with two bowlers, but that is because they are bowling first. Surely they will bring in a batter in the second innings of the game.

RR have not made a change at all. Theirs is the beautiful balance where they start with just three overseas players and then make a change based on the requirement at that point. Most likely they will bring in Nadre Burger for the second innings.

Mumbai Indians have signed English left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood as a replacement for the injured Jason Behrendorff for IPL 2024. Wood has been signed for his base price of INR 50 lakh. Wood has 147 wickets from 140 T20s, including five matches for England. While he has featured in several T20 leagues like the BBL, PSL and BPL, apart from The Hundred, this will be his first IPL stint. The injury to Behrendorff, who returned 14 wickets from 12 games last season, compounds problems for Mumbai in their fast-bowling department. Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka picked up an injury during the second ODI against Bangladesh which has likely ruled him out from the initial stages of IPL 2024. South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee is also recovering from a pelvic inflammation and could be unavailable for Mumbai's first few matches. Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Nuwan Thushara and Arjun Tendulkar are the other fast bowlers in Mumbai's roster, while their new captain Hardik Pandya has confirmed that he is fit to bowl in the tournament. Andrew Flintoff defends IPL decision as debut approaches

Andrew Flintoff has no doubt that his decision to play in the Indian Premier League was the right one, despite many people suggesting that he should be rested ahead of the Ashes.

The England all-rounder has been plagued by injury in recent years and there are fears that playing in the Twenty20 extravaganza in South Africa might be dangerous with a crucial series against Australia still to come in the summer.

But the 31-year-old, who will play for the Chennai Super Kings against the Mumbai Indians at Newlands tomorrow has one message for cynics that want him wrapped in cotton-wool.

"I missed a lot of cricket through injury. I missed four weeks this winter, so the more cricket I can play now, the better for me," he said.

"Also I think that people are losing sight of the importance of the (Twenty20) World Cup in England. The importance not just for myself, but people like Dimi Mascarenhas, KP (Kevin Pietersen) and Ravi Bopara developing the skills in this form of the game because it's just getting bigger and better."

The Lancashire star, who confirmed his status in international cricket with his IPL price tag when along with Pietersen, he sold for $1.55m (around £1.05m) at this season's auction, believes that playing in the league can only be of benefit to the English game.

He continued: "We have the Twenty20 World Cup in England in a few weeks' time and T20 cricket is something England need to improve on. We've not had too much success as England.

"I think like it or hate it - it's going to be around for a long time. It's going to be a big part of international cricket as well. The game has been a success since it started in England and I can only see it going from strength to strength.

"We played the World Cup out here a few years back, it didn't go too well and then we got found out in the West Indies.

"There are a few English players out here and that can only help us. The more exposure you're going to get, the better you're going to get. And that's something I want to do, develop my skills and improve my game."

Like Flintoff, Pietersen is hoping that some of his team-mates playing in the league, which was shifted to South Africa due to security fears during India's national elections, can learn more about cricket's newest format.

He said: "I'm here to try and have a fantastic two weeks to learn my cricket through the legends I'm going to be playing with and playing against.

"Hopefully a lot of the England boys playing here can do that and we take that back to England so that we can compete at a really good level in the Twenty20 World Cup. It's huge for the Twenty20 World Cup for the England players to play well.

"I definitely think it's going to take our game forward and if we want to compete in the Twenty20 World Cup, then we've definitely got to improve our skills in T20 cricket. Some of our best players are here in this tournament and it can only do good for our game."

Pietersen, who will captain the Bangalore Royal Challengers against the Rajasthan Royals tomorrow, and his England colleagues will only participate in the competition for two weeks before heading off to prepare for a home series against West Indies.

And despite being disappointed that he could not play for longer, the 28-year-old highlighted that the chance to play for his country was even bigger.

"It's disappointing to leave early for me. But at the end of the day, I love playing Test cricket, which is number one for me, and I can't wait to walk onto Lord's for any Test match.

"So it's disappointing because I only lead the side for two weeks and somebody else takes over. But I mean to go back to England to play a Test match at Lord's, there's nothing better."

England have also recently appointed a new coach in Andy Flower and Pietersen praised the new man, adding: "I'm very, very excited. Andy did a fantastic job in the Caribbean and I've said that on numerous occasions. So I can't wait to work with him again properly.

"I've got on really well with him and I'm looking forward to working with him again in two-and-a-half weeks' time."

Kolkata, Apr 17 (ANI): Sourav Ganguly’s fans are outraged over their favourite cricketer’s replacement as a captain of Kolkata Knight Riders’ team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament with New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

Ganguly was the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2008 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

On Friday, Ganguly’s fans burnt posters of Bollywood star and Kolkata Knight Riders’ owner Shahrukh Khan here. They blamed him of being the culprit behind Ganguly’s replacement as a captain.

Ganguly’s fans said they would not accept anyone else in his place, as he was far better team leader than McCullum to lead the Knight Riders.

“The team won’t strengthen until Ganguly is made the captain. McCullum should be removed and Ganguly should be brought back to captaincy,” Rahul Mishra, a protestor demanded.

Fans also burnt the effigies of KKR coach John Buchanan, who had first proposed multiple captaincies system last month. Ganguly, however, had accepted the decision of multiple captaincies, as he would be able to focus more on his batting and bowling skills.

The IPL is scheduled to be held between April 18 and May 24.The matches will be played at eight venues around South Africa, with the final to be held in Johannesburg.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle has joined Shane Warne in calling for the International Cricket Council to create a separate window for the Indian Premier League.

Warne, the captain and coach of champions Rajasthan Royals, has called for the ICC to show some "common sense" and ensure no international cricket is scheduled in June. The West Indies are scheduled to play a Test and one-day series in England next month, and Gayle would only be available to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders for the first two weeks of the IPL.

"I think it would be worth looking at a fixed window for the IPL in the calendar," Gayle wrote in a column for the Times of India. "I say this because everyone should get a fair chance to play the full tournament."

He added: "Everyone wants to play the tournament because it is a big event, so why not open a window for the tournament so that everyone gets a chance to succeed.

"This way we can also ensure that teams don't lose their best players midway.

"We saw last season how some teams were affected when their players left.

"A lot of investment has been pumped into this event by the franchises and they deserve to have their best players on the field."

It has been quite some time since I last hit the "Publish Post" link. The month of May 2008 was perhaps filled with more news than any month in the first half of the year. Perhaps, the lionine share of the news and all that constantly hit the daily headlines belongs to the Indian Premier League which has blown the trumpet of freshness, both in the world of cricket and that of business. Lots of cricket zealots (wives and girlfriends apart) would have silently cursed Lalit Modi, for spoiling their evening plans, sleep and keeping a zillions of spines chilling at the eerie hour of 12 (2400 hrs) in the possible hottest month of the summer. It really was an ornate extravaganza, for at times, I felt that the IPL would eventually replace the quadrennial World Cup in its fame charts.

Modi, later in Exxtra Innings, revealed that it was during a scorching noon at Wimbledon, where it all began. Sharad Pawar, Modi and other eminent officials of BCCI were at the Centre Court watching in awe as The Fedex Juggernaut was on its full strength thrashing a belligerent, equipotent Rafael Nadal en route its 5th consecutive championship to equal an existing record of Bjorn Borg. That the finale dragged itself into exhaustive 5 setter, two of which included tie-breakers, gave the spectators more than their penny's worth. Taking a cue from the unprecedented glory of Wimbledon, our guys have done an incredible job of gifting us a month-and-a-half-long reality blockbuster, which has already cast its growing shadow on the 50-50 over or 5-day version of the game. The league has already launched India to the fore of a corporate run cricket with tremendous ease. Fittingly, Rajasthan Royals, led by a shrewd campaigner in Shane Warne won the inagural edition of IPL, effectively putting an end to theories which sought the opinion that the amount of money invested is tantamount to talent and success. Where were the Asnodkars and the lesser known Pathans in the mind of a well bred cricket purist?? Hardly anyone would have guessed that these cricketers, who have spent most of their time playing for dull Plate 'B' divisions would carve a gem of success from a team which resembled a sandstone at the beginning of the league. All plaudits to Rajasthan, for proving the pith of the success was hard work and self belief. Those impaired in the Jaipur blast can happily find some smiles returning on their faces following the stupendous feat of Rajasthan Royals.

While IPL itself is not the soul of life, the month of May had other important things in store.In Karnataka,the focus on cricket had to take a back seat as the Royal Challengers of Bangalore did everything unasked for.Instead, someone who had been ruthlessly humiliated and betrayed in a 20-20 contest (the stakes involved here were higher than an IPL tie) had all reasons to cheer as he successfully made a come-back to shut JD(S) out of contention, atleast for the coming 5 years. BJP ripped severe deep cuts into its earlier coalition partner with 110 seats favoring the earlier-beleaguered party. While BJP's clinch this time around improved from 80 (2004 stats) to 110, that of JD(S) saw a slump from 58 to 28. A neat shift of 30 in the wrong direction for demonstrating calculated betrayal. The media crew, known for its expertize in spicing up things, did not miss capturing a glimpse of an empty JD(S) headquarters at the onset of declaration of the election denouement. Congress meanwhile remained mute as ever, taking no chances to reform ties with a party who've clearly demonstrated what they are capable of. BSY finally ascended the throne and the new government has just finished its expansion and is looking forward to justify its selection. The independent winners were drafted to create a majority bench and were actually offered posts which they otherwise would have never likely achieved. With this victory, BJP, which has seen tremendous success of late, achieved its first full strength government in South India and is looking in good nick for the 2009 national elections.

On May 5th, oil prices reached US $120 per gallon for the first time to pressurize world economy. And more was to come as it soared close to $130 at the end of the month creating severe panic. The central government, already under fire from several quarters due to rising inflation and fluctuating economy is fighting its best to keep the surge within manageable limits by reducing tax levy and other involved costs, but it remains to be seen as to how long will this last. Tough times await us if this runs rampant. It's interesting to see how Mr Manmohan Singh and Co. would manage to stabilize things in the final leg of UPA's helm at the top.

LONDON — A multimillion-dollar Champions League will be launched in September after the cricket boards of England, Australia, India and South Africa reached agreement on the new Twenty20 tournament.

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced plans for the league Saturday, saying the inaugural eight-team competition would likely be staged in India or the Middle East over 10 days in September and early October.

The winner will get US$5 million with "significant sums" of prize money for the second-, third-and fourth-placed teams, the ECB said in a statement.

"It sounds like a pretty good idea to me," New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum said after the third day's play in the third test against England in Nottingham, England.

"It would be great to have a Champions League like football does and have the hype around it. I think it's good for the game to have that kind of following."

Cricket's Twenty20 revolution gathered pace this year with two new lucrative leagues in India attracting the world's leading players. National administrators across the world have been eager to cash in on the condensed game's popularity with crowds and broadcasters.

Representatives of the Indian and English boards will start talks with prospective commercial partners for the tournament that will feature the finalists from England's domestic Twenty20 Cup final at the Rose Bowl, the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings from India, the Titans and Kwazulu Natal Dolphins from South Africa and Western Australia and Victoria state teams from Australia.

"(It's) certainly an incentive for domestic sides to take Twenty20 seriously and develop their skills and players, which can only help the international team," England paceman Stuart Broad said.

ASPIRING Australian batsman David Hussey, who has lived at the forefront of the Twenty20 revolution since its invention, says he is "seriously worried" that domestic teams could be blinded by Twenty20's cash to the detriment of four- and five-day cricket.

His concerns were raised on the same day that the England and Wales Cricket Board signed on to play for a staggering $US100 million prize purse for five 20-over encounters against West Indies-based billionaire Sir Allen Stanford's Super Stars XI.

But Hussey said he hoped the dollar signs were not blinding cricket's administrators. "I'm just imploring that the ICC and the IPL all get together and keep a keen interest in Test cricket because that is what this game's all about," he said yesterday.

Hussey departed for the Caribbean last night to join the Australian limited-overs squad, with his own priorities unchanged — he wants to represent his country in Test and one-day cricket and he wants it badly — and buoyed by conversations with national captain Ricky Ponting, with whom he shared a dressing room at the Kolkata Knight Riders.

While the 30-year-old Victorian is convinced of the power of the Indian Premier League, and enthusiastic about the Bushrangers competing for a $US5 million ($A5.3 million) prize in the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League this spring, he voiced concerns that states and counties could become sidetracked at the expense of their first-class teams.

"I'm seriously worried. I think T20 has got more kids playing the game and enjoying watching it, which is fantastic, but also with all the money that's floating around, a lot of domestic teams, especially in England … they think, this is our window to make a heap of cash," said Hussey, who helped pioneer T20 with Nottinghamshire.

"My priority is still the same. I'm a traditionalist and I always had the goal growing up that I wanted to play cricket for Australia. I've got a little window of opportunity in the West Indies. Hopefully, I get a chance and if I do I will take it with both hands. I desperately want to play."

Hussey has avoided a conflict of loyalties over which team to represent at the Twenty20 Champions League because Kolkata did not qualify, but said he would have fought to play for Victoria if a clash had arisen.

The IPL has negotiated the right for franchises to have first call on players who qualify with more than one team.

"To be honest, I think we've got a better chance of winning the whole thing with Victoria rather than our individual franchises, anyway," Hussey said.

The ordeal of Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Asif, held for allegedly possessing opium, continues as he spends his second week in detention in Dubai. No charges have been filed, and the case has been referred to the local attorney general’s office. The 25-year-old fast bowler was detained by customs authorities at the Dubai International Airport on June 1 on his way back to Lahore via Dubai from Mumbai where he had played the Indian Premier League (IPL) semi-final for Delhi Daredevils against eventual tournament winners Rajasthan Royals on May 30.
