Great sounds of Vibraphone-based Jazz by Hammond Beat Records. Hammondbeat On Vibes is a new series started with fellow Oregon resident Thomas Mackay who kicks things off with 2 volumes of infectious laid back vibraphonic grooves. You are listening to volume 1: Jackson [HBV-001] which will be available in a limited edition CD or from Hammondbeat Digital - available everywhere on June 21, 2013.

Thomas Mackay (vibes), Paul Turnipseed {guitar), John Zalabak (bass), Kelvin Underwood (drums)

'Thomas owes an obvious debt to the great Bobby Hutcherson. With a clear tone, strong chops and good ideas he is also reminiscent of modern vibes masters Bryan Carrott and Joe Locke. A fine debut from a fellow Oregonian.' ~ Rob Scheps

Next up from Hammondbeat:

Here's That Rainy Day [HBV-002], a collection of standards by The Thomas Mackay Quintet.

The Ephelon Trio came together in the fall of 2009 after a year of playing together in Sidewalk Chalk, the trios main project that's quickly gaining momentum in Chicago's burgeoning hip-hop scene. The Ephelon is steeped in the funk, soul, and jazz tradition whilst incorporating a fresh modern swagger to the music's vibe. Initially know for playing intimate and highly improvisational shows consisting of things like Dilla mash-ups, nu jazz a la the likes of Kenny Garret or Robert Glasper, and old school funk - 2011 brings a new avenue of expression to the table with the" Ephelon Plays _____" concert series. December 2010 saw the first of these shows with the Ephelon Trio Plays the Roots Come Alive at Wicker Park's Lokal Lounge.

"It seems Dilla has reached everywhere and people are aware of that particular album. I think it resonates with people...Paying homage to the record by trying to play it accurately while doing it with live instrumentation bridges both sides." - The Ephelon Trio on J Dilla's album, Donuts.

Tyler Berg, Charlie Coffeen, and Garrett McGinn from local group The Ephelon Trio join hosts Molly Adams and Brian Babylon to talk about music and honoring classic albums. The group is performing J Dilla's classic, Donuts, live in its entirety tomorrow night May 25th 2013 at Chicago's Ultra Lounge in Logan Square.

“A gritty rhythm section of old school drums and Fender or upright bass, alongside funky Hammond and Rhodes, with some sweet George Benson-ish jazz guitar licks on top.” From the quiet tropical suburban back streets of Australia's 3rd largest city (Brisbane) comes a young all instrumental ensemble called Kerbside Collection, creating a mixture of some forgotten rare groove sounds – good times instrumental jazz funk with a touch of soul.

The sound of Ravi Welsh (Guitar), Jason “Paprika” Bell (Drum & percussion), Chris Poulsen (Hammond & Fender Rhodes) and Jeremy O’Connor (Fender “P” & double bass) harks back to the 60s and 70s Californian West Coast music of artists such as Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Chico Hamilton, Joe Sample and The Crusaders, whilst tipping its’ hat to today’s contemporaries keeping the ‘feel’ alive (Soulive, Bobby Hughes, James Taylor Quartet, Eddie Roberts & The New Mastersounds, The Menahan Street Band, The Stance Brothers, Frootful etc).

Jeru the Damaja - "El Presidente" (Heartbreak Sound Rework)

Open your mind to a new sound of Afro Cuban/Hip Hop fusion on Heartbeak Soundsystem's remix of "El Presidente". This Latin-flavored arrangement brings a much lighter vibe than the darkness of DJ Honda's original version with a groove that utilized both boom-bap and Salsa rhythms for a new idea of the party vibe in Hip Hop.

Andrezzz & Teza Sumendra - "Come Closer" + "Pretty Wings" (Maxwell Cover)

With excellent vocal harmonies and performance, Indonesian singers Andrezzz and TezaSumendra project messages of love over electrified sounds of production to form their sound known as "ElectricLov3". "Come Closer" is a smooth-flowing groove which is sure to resonate in your imagination as an R&B duo who have the power to enlighten, entertain and uplift with the power of their voices. Teza's cover of Maxwell's "Pretty Wings" is an impressive performance as well!
It's hard to find another MC who goes all out against what he dislikes about Hip Hop culture and entertains with their words like Bumpy Knuckles. "Somen'Wrong" aims for the fake and foul by the verbal weapon of a Hip Hop vet. This sincere track continues where Industry shakedown in a track that bounces with a slick re-arrangement of the Johnny Guitar Watson classic "Superman Lover".

Press release by UrbanElite PR:

"Ahead of the release of his first solo album in 10 years, "Lock'd N The Lab" due out late August, Bumpy Knuckles releases his new EP "The Mix Files" on 18th June as a joint venture between Seven13 Music & Krupt Mob.

Made up almost entirely of new material which will not appear on the album, it includes the previously released Ask the Coach, Word ft Sy Ari Tha Kid and this new single Somn'Wrong

Both the EP and album are entirely self produced by Freddie Foxxx. This will be a busy summer for Bumpy with the release of his EP, album and the putting together of a new UK and European tour for later in the year. He is also working on some further collaborations which should see the light of day in the coming months
Moog, the film, takes us inside the mind of this legendary figure as he shares his ideas about creativity, design, interactivity and spirituality. To this day Moog continues to shape musical culture with some of the most inspiring instruments ever created.

May 23, 2013 is synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog's 79th birthday. Moog Inc. is honoring this special time of year with a campaign to grown their innovative educational Initiative nationwide for Dr. Bob's SoundSchool. Feel free to show your support by donating $23 to send one child or $79 to send four children through Dr. Bob's SoundSchool.

As an addition to this great documentary, listen to the music of a few talented artists who use the Moog's signature sound in their own way. Modular is a band who incorporates the Moog to their 70's style of Euro Pop while Randy Muller demonstrates the use of the Moog in the sound of 80's boogie. Juno what lay down groovy 80's talkbox Funk and dance grooves on their 2011 album "Shameless".

Kick back to the mellow sounds of Inclined as they bring a bluesy-Rock vibe (minus the horns) to their interpretation of the Soul classic "I'm Glad You're Mine" by Al Green. From their project entitled "Outtakes" which you can listen to here at Soundcloud.

Bio:

"The Inclined are a hybrid progressive-pop-funk-soul-rock-trip-out that hailed from the Westside of Los Angeles back in the day, when Miles (aka Music Man Miles of Breakestra), Steve and Gene started jamming the summer before their first year of high school in 1984. That was the start of a 13-year run (longer than most bands ya think of) that would include many backyard parties, Palisades High School quad jams, 4-track cassette demos, and eventually Hollywood bar gigs (and that’s with 3 cats who were too young to be in bars in the first place!) The band...consisting of Steve Smart on drums, Gene Perry on bass, and Miles Tackett on guitar & vocals, was as influenced by the late 80’s/early 90’s hip hop golden age as they were by older progressive & newer pop rock styles & psychedelic sounds. Gain a broader perspective of the trails, tribulations, happiness and darkness of the ghetto through a few different musical interpretations which each convey their own image to your imagination. With each artist you will not only receive a different genre and vision of music to inspire, but also gain access to a world of great music as you visit their Soundcloud catalogs.

There's nothing like real life struggle to draw great art out of talented people who in turn speak for a whole overlooked section of society.
Smooth, funky and melodic is the approach which Aceman & Virtuosity take to beats as a sound which fuses traditional boom-bap rawness with futuristic synth compositions. Aceman is an up and coming producer, member of L.N.S Entertainment's production team Joint Chiefs known for collaborating with fellow producers Virtuosity, Laudz and Focus. Enjoy a few selections in this post which highlight Aceman's signature sound which is recognizable to the ear within a few sounds after pressing play. In listening to these it's clear he's got the West Coast bounce to a science, but that's only a certain extent of his total skills. As you head over to Ace's Soundcloud, prepare for an ear-full of treats as you sit back and press play!
Beautiful music all-around from the talented Shim Jin from Korea who provides a feel-good festive vibe to take your worries away. With skills on the bass to remember in performing on R&B, Soul, Funk or Jazz music, each song Shim touches resonates with a degree of energy and emotion to entertain and draw you into his musical journey.
Get down to the funky sounds of The Slingshots on their live cover of "Right On!" and Tony Alvon & The Belairs' fast-paced groove "Sexy Coffee Pot". This band from Barcelona Spain arrange in a way which is faithful to each of the song's great breakdowns, busy percussion and funky horn section while increasing the adrenaline rush of the original in their effort on instrumentation.

Keep a look-out for the Slingshots as an emerging band who's definitely got the Funk and not afraid to display it with their full potential.

Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em: Eric B & Rakim Remixed by DJ IQ and DJ D-Incredible

With a understanding of the soulful sample based sound of Eric B and Rakim's 3rd LP "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em". two DJ/producers lend their hand at remixing one of Hip Hop's most dangerous songs. DJ IQ and DJ D-Incredible give new vision to Rakim's words of death with dusty samples dug from the crates arranged with creativity and on-point turntable skills.
Enjoy some interview footage from the "Illmatic" era as a young Nas speaks on his accomplishments in Hip Hop thus far as an emerging MC who walked an uncertain path from the danger of the ghetto into dreams of a new life within the music industry. This Canadian Rap City footage from 1994 is courtesy of YouTube user Hias74.

As a nice musical addition to this 1994 footage which represents a classic Hip Hop album, enjoy the Jazz fusion sounds of Medline in his 2013 re-arrangement of "Smilin' Billy Suite" by the Heath Brothers, a song which was sampled for Nas's "One Love". This magical composition adds an additional dose of energy to the original as Medline plays with the arrangement to keep it exciting all the way through with a mixture of spacey Rhodes, synths, busy percussion and smooth flute sounds.

Groovositive, a talented group of Italian musicians get together to emmerse themselves in the musical message of The Notorious B.I.G and Dave Grusin. With singing and MCing with a purpose based upon B.I.G.'s message of the "Everyday Struggle" paired with the band's appreciation and passion for re-playing the music of Dave Grusin, this live performance packs a great deal of inspiration and emotion. If only we could get a studio recording of this Grusin/Biggie tribute!

20 years after dropping groundbreaking classics, these two powerful entities of Hip Hop exceed their level of hood influence to inspire a new generation of musicians. Enjoy as today's artists remix and re-interpret the music of Death Row and Rap-A-Lot Records.

Paul Cantor brings a smooth interpretation of the Geto Boys classic "My Minds Playin Tricks On Me" which expands upon the original with a beautiful musical arrangement and relaxed vibe. If your a fan of "The Chronic", this version might remind you of a West Coast type of sound that Dre and Snoop would rhyme too as a nice example of slow-rolling Hip Hop/Funk fusion.

Paul has produced for artists like Freeway, Wu-Tang Clan, Mya, Glasses Malone, Joy Denalane (Germany), Project E.A.R. (Asia), Kool G Rap, Pras, Tragedy Khadafi, Killarmy and others. My TV/Film/Ad/misc media work includes original production, sync and score work for brands such as Disney, MTV, ABC, Casio, Hennessy, A Peace Treaty, Hot97, XXL, Complex and Respect magazine, amongst others. Check him out on Soundcloud for more treats!

Alvin Pingol adds a new vibe of excitement in a soulful re-arrangement to keep your head moving with his alternative Rock remix of Dre & Snoop's "Nuthin' But A G Thang". Alvin's work evokes a new vibe of this summer anthem as he uses a sweet guitar-based groove which attempts to redefine the sound and vision of G-Funk which Dre pioneered on "The Chronic".

The Caltones lay down a soulful performance which pays tribute to both The Geto Boys and Isaac Hayes in a live version of "My Mind's Playin' Tricks On Me". This sound captures and leans more towards the raw Stax sound of Mr. Hayes and features some entertaining solo work on the guitar.
On Grass on Fire, this collection of eleven intrepid musician/explorers dedicated to bringing the sounds of classic Ska and Reggae to the fine people of Brooklyn and beyond, bring a jazz perspective to Marley’s 1973 classic Catch A Fire, instrumentally interpreting the Reggae pioneer’s music so that it retains all of its original passion and sincerity.

The heights of musical inspiration and expression reach new exciting levels as the Rotterdam-based Re:Freshed Orchestra pay tribute to the late J Dilla's legacy. Enjoy 2 hours of moving compositions as the approach of a legendary beatmaker and contemporary orchestra combine.

Re:Freshed Orchestra is the brain child of Sigmar Vriesde, Alexander van Popta and Furlan Felter and is supported by Podium Grounds (Rotterdam).

The orchestra is full of talented musicians who play different Dutch bands. Also are there classical musicians/students or graduates from the international conservatory: " CODARTS" in the Orchestra. The musical approach of this project is to create great music with young people with different musical educational background.

Some have buillt on their talent from scratch and some from attending a special musical education. The base of this project is controlled chaos, experiemental and creating from a joint passion of great music. The performances end up being unique one time only performances which have a jamsession feel.

Next to these musicians we invite guest musicians/ singers or rappers to join the performance. The orchestra plays some of their repertoire or a set of songs in a special theme. But they always do it different from the original which challenges the guest musicians with a new way of looking toward their own music.
