Check out about 30 minutes of video as two classic entities of Hip Hop travel from the US overseas to Europe during the Golden Era of 1989. The footage captured by Loosefanclub features an exciting (and brightly lit) performance by EPMD at BCM Summer Dance Festival at the Tempodrome in Berlin Germany during the duo's 2nd album "Unfinished Business". This stage show kicks off with a blazing 4 minute DJ set by Scratch. After EPMD, watch a sit-down interview with The Blastmaster KRS-One in London who explains his place in Hip Hop and life during the release of his then new album "Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip-Hop".

Legendary musician, producer and songwriter Al Kooper visits the Massachusetts studios of Lost and Found for an interview and musical journey through his career in performing with a who's who of Rock music royalty. Listen to stories behind the music as Al takes you into recording sessions in addition to sharing songs from his classic catalog, some unreleased music and some of his favorite Rock music of the current generation.

The Brooklyn-born musician began in the late 1950s as a sideman, producer and songwriter eventually gaining placement to play on the Bob Dylan albums "Blonde On Blonde" and "Highway 61 Revisited" during the 60's. Some of his greatest and most well-known accomplishments are his credit as the fouder of Blood, Sweat, and Tears and as one of the most important members of the The Blues Project. "Super Session" an album which Kooper produced and performed on with groundbreaking guitarist Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills is iconic within Rock as an album which pioneered the idea of the "super group" in the late 60's into the early 70's, spawning a number of classic groups after it's release. Al's involvement is notable in collaborating with many talented musicians within an era of Rock which would shape the genre for years to come, even collaborating with and drawing influence from Soul musicians of the time. After "Super Session" Al went on to perform on albums by The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Cream, The Who, and many more.

As a musician who has influenced generations while also keeping his ear to newly emerging acts, Al took the opportunity to share some of the music which he enjoys these days. He plays the music of current bands which fit in the vein of the revival 60's Rock sound he is so well known for, in addition to sharing a few of his own recent performances.
The summer of 2012 marks the release of an EP by Soulive and Karl Denson dedicated to the life of influential jazz guitarist Melvin Sparks. "SPARK!" feature their cover tunes by Soulive and Denson which capture the unique CTI Jazz sound with authenticity as a standard of funky Jazz fusion which Mr. Sparks helped to define during his career. This special EP project was recorded in 2011 shortly after the unfortunate passing of Sparks.

"SPARK!" will be officially released on June 19 with an accompanied tour of Japan and New York to play songs from the project.

This beautiful song is from Daniel's Jazz album entitled "Red Pill" which is scheduled for a June 2012 release.

Enjoy some of the funkiest sounds of Jazz in 2012 from German band The Ruffcats on their full-length LP "The Essence Vol. 1". The name of the project is fitting as 8 musicians evoke the essence of funky 70's Jazz fusion by playing everything from mellow tunes to raw funk, afro-beat, jazz, psych and latin genres all combined into one interesting, experimental and authentic sound.

Bio:

The Ruffcats are one of Gemany's hardest working live bands. When it comes to heavy funk and progressive soul stylings, there ain't no competition for the 8 piece group from Berlin.

The Ruffcats are best known as the studio and backing band of German soul shouter Flo Mega, with whom they have played over 250 gigs over the last two years.

After providing the backbone for an impressive line-up of singers from Bajka to Jaguar Wright to Ladi6 it is now time for the Ruffcats to enter the spotlight as the main act with their first album „The Essence Pt.1“. Citing influences from hip-hop, soul, psych and jazz to Sa Ra Creative Partners, Dilla, Manfred Krug, Can and UK future bass, The Ruffcats aim to play new grooves in an analogue way. And that's excatly what they do on „The Essence Pt.1“.

The funny thing is that the album happened partly by accident. In late January the Ruffcats entered the legendary Lovelite studios in Berlin with little more in mind than taping some jam sessions. In the end they stayed for four days and recorded a full album on the spot. During the sessions Lovelite owner Jochen Ströh, became somewhat of an additional band member, working his trusty analogue 8-track recorder in ways that caused the band to go right back into the recording room and finish the job. Ströh recently recorded and produced Ebo Taylor's latest album for Strut Records and has hosted bands and musicians like the Whitefield Brothers, Tony Allen and Blitz the Ambassador at his studio.
The 11 raw jams on “The Essence Pt. 1” display a band paying hommage to the past whilst pushing their own boundaries to create something fresh and exciting. The musical spectrum covers raw funk, afro-beat, jazz, psych and latin played with a 2012 hip-hop state of mind.

The Ruffcats Story

Conducted by bandleader Uwe Breunig after turning away from his former job as the drummer for some of Germany's biggest reggae acts, The Ruffcats started out no more than himself, bass player Joh Weisberger and the idea of a forward-thinking new band concept. The current line-up consists of eight musicians deriving from places as diverse as Columbia, Hungary and Würzburg, all of who have moved to Berlin to pursuit a life in music, and eventually got together after playing Flomega's first major tour in March 2011.
Uwe coincidently ran into Flomega at an art exhibtition in Berlin (where else), after listening to him sing on a demo laying around in The Ruffcats' former rehearsal room. Just a couple of sessions later, “Pay Me Right” Flomega and The Ruffcats' first 12” single saw the light of day on MPM and The Ruffcats continued to stick with Flo on his inevitable way to stardom.
However, The Ruffcats have proven their ablity to adapt to vocalists of different genres on several occasions. Between 2008 and 2011 they have entertained a house band residency in Berlin's legendary Bohannon Club, supporting gigs and tours by the likes of Stacy Epps, Bajka, Jaguar Wright, Mic Donet ( of Voice Of Germany - fame), or Ladi6 – who was so impressed by the band's blind understanding that she quit rehearsals and entered the stage to a fully improvised show.

released 25 May 2012

Go back to the year of 1993 where the mad-face invasion of Onyx helped shape the sound of Hip Hop for the East Coast. In this video watch the Queens New York rebels introduce their debut album "Bacdafucup" before performing a set of the album cut "Bichasniguz". Their words are not as audible as they could be during the performance so refresh yourself to the lyrics of this song if you want by listening to the song at YouTube.

When looking back it's not hard to tell that Onyx were out to set a statement not just with the sound of their music but with aggressive energy whether on the mic or speaking in person.

After the performance check out short interviews from Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, Joe Fatal of Live from The Barbecue and Def Jam's gangsta female MC BO$$.

This mix by Serbia's DJ Chile displays the upbeat, festive side of Jazz fusion which many associate with a warmer time of year. "Spring High" is feel-good 70's Jazz at it's best from innovators of the genre who combine funky sounds with an array of mellow compositions and energetic Brazilian rhythms for a feeling of musical escapism.
Monk One is always generous in blessing eardrums with a variety of obscure sounds from his deep record collection whether through radio or live events. In 2012 he provides a mix for Dust and Grooves as the resident DJ of WBAI's Underground Railroad show, Wax Poetics writer and Red Bull Music Academy speaker. You can always expect surprises from Monk One due to his love for rare tunes which carry an overall soulful or funky vibe. The mix features tracks by Melvin Bliss, Grand Wizard Theodore, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, Byron Morris & Unity, Shamek Farrah and more.

In addition to the mix, be sure to check out Monk's 2009 interview and photo shoot with Dust and Grooves here at their website.

The latest single "Take A Moment" from Sav Killz's "Bangers & B-Sides" finds the Brooklyn MC taking a brief moment to reminisce by providing authentic images of the hood over mellow Afro-Funk sounds. This musical sound bed fits his reflective rhyme style well and production-wise is a different approach than "Retrospect" and the Madlib-produced "More Rice" which carry the straight-up raw boom-bap sound Sav is known for.

The 2012 album from San Francisco-based band Monophonics entitled “In Your Brain” sits on the fuzzy psych side of soul and funk. Paying homage to innovators of psychedelic soul such as Sly Stone, Norman Whitfield and Funkedelic’s George Clinton the 6 piece outfit displays their ability to put a moody stamp on each composition whether its an original or cover. Touching on everything from cinematic soul, heavy funk, 60’s rock and spaghetti western laced with yellow sunshine acid, the album is sure to leave you tuned in and turned on! Enjoy snippets of powerful psychedelic Funk music from the group below.

The collaboration of Masta Ace and MF Doom on "Son of Yvonne" sounds like a collaboration of each of their best qualities which they originally came into the game with combined into one project. From the snippets it is clear that down to earth, reflective messages over soulful, sample-heavy music is present throughout each song as they take you on a musical journey of life. Masta Ace is provided with loops from MF Doom for an ideal sound to show his refined skill set as in combining social consciousness and life lessons with entertaining wordplay.

The lead single "Slow Down" is creative storytelling at it's best and is bound to provide anticipation for those waiting to hear the unique combination of skills from Ace and Doom. This song sets the tone for what sounds like an album rich in storytelling skills and nostalgic writing based a simple yet competitive approach to Hip Hop by two influential figures who have managed to keep putting out good music since the 90's.

"Real Love" released on May 15, 2012 on Dynotone Records showcases the talent of Ryan Shaw as a Soul vocalist who carries the sound of his classic 60's influences into a new generation with extraordinary vocal chops and passionate performances. A few seconds of Ryan's tenor combined with authentic grooves provided by musicians such as Al Kooper and Jim Bralower are bound to inspire your mood and outlook on life as you receive pure emotion with each verse. Ryan's contribution to Soul music is moving in it's message and dedication to the musical foundation pioneered by greats of the 60's such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke. Drawing direct influence from a classic sound and his background as a gospel vocalist, Ryan delves deep within to express trails of love, reflection upon the past and appreciation of life through a variety of lively, upbeat dancefloor grooves and mellow ballads. Listen as the young vocalist adds his unique touch to covers by his contemporaries on "You Don't Know Nothing About Love" originally performed by gospel singer Carl Hall and "Blackmail" originally performed by Bobby Taylor.

"Real Love" is here to help re-define the sound of American Soul music by the outstanding vocals of two-time Grammy nominee Ryan Shaw.

Musician and sound engineer Jamey Staub interviews with French music magazine Star Wax for an in-depth look into over 20 years of perfecting the sonics for a range of recording artists at Greene Street studios in New York City. As a freelance engineer, Jamey has mixed records for everyone from Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, to Rock Stars Paul Stanley, Mick Taylor, Sonic Youth, and Jazz greats Carlos Ward and Cassandra Wilson.

This particular interview should be a treat for those who are eager to learn the process behind two groups who helped merge professional mixing with innovative sample-based production. Star Wax examines Jamey's work with Pete Rock and Public Enemy as insight into the art of mixing Hip Hop production for the book SP1200, The Art and Science.
