Reunited to reminisce their younger days, old friends hugs with tears and squeals of delight as they met during their reunion dinner at the Century Mahkota Hotel in Malacca. Love lingers on even after 45 years as former classmates of the 1966 batch.

Fying into Malacca, they came from London, Vancouver, Melbourne, Singapore and Penang. Reflections - Rekindling Friendship ripples affection as Ivan Seet set the ball rolling with his opening address.

Those Were The Days by Gene Raskins and It's Now or Never by Elvis Presley engulfed the atmosphere for about 80 alumni members and their spouses.

Anything Goes: Old colonial headmasters

Interestingly, Arnold was Hutchings School's headmaster in 1931-1934 before his transfer to the Penang Free School. He was also a headmaster of the Malacca High School in 1931 while Howitt was a headmaster of the Victoria School in Singapore in 1941 and again 1946-1948. There was also D Roper who was a headmaster of both the Penang Free School (1947-1950) and Victoria School (1941). I'm sure in time, more people would unearth more information on the connecting histories of the old schools in Malaysia and Singapore

Ahead, two roads diverged into the city.

I steered right and an arch is above me when the statue of Mr. Asia at the other road on the left, stole a look from me.

The road on the left is called Kubu Road. It is the statue of His Honourable Datuk Wira Gan Boon Leong, the former Mr. Asia.

Immediately after passing the arch, the image of Queen Victoria's fountain pop-up in my mind, and knowing very well, her fountain is about 1 kilometer right in front, standing proudly with the Christ Church and the Stadhuy as backgrounds. Queen Victoria was the monarch of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Not forgetting the soft rest the foot against the accelerating pedal of the Malaysian made Proton Wira, the car was further slowed to the swaying of the many nationalists from many parts of the world, who are gazing on every inches of Jonker Walk.

All those nationalists are surely devoted to the interests and culture of one's nation, but each time on any other day, as I drove through Jonker Walk ... they gazed with love.

99 feet stretch from the side mirror of the Proton Wira, is a row of very very old shops where the amazing home made Nyonya or some say, the Peranakan Pineapple Tart that can induce mouth watering condition and the tarts aroma would seduce you to melt them in your mouth.

Next to these tarts corners, is the Jonker Boutique Hotel, an old 3-storey concrete refurbished with modern amenities of 5-stars comfort. I sighed, "I must walk through Jonker Walk !". It is certainly to be only a normal discovery for a 3 hours walk best in daylight and better after dusk. A small group of Straits-Born Chinese in Melaka humbly emulate the teachings of the Lord Buddha in 1920.

In two different Chinese temples for 19 years and for another 16 years in a small wooden bungalow, Full Moon prayers, New Moon prayers and marriages ceremonies were performed.

Seck Kia Eenh means Lord Buddha's Monastery.

The late Tan Sri V.T. Sambanthan (then the Minister of Post, Works and Telecommunication) and Ungku Mohsein Bin Abdul Kadir (then Assistant Minister of Youths, Culture and Sports) witnessed the Wesak Blossoms in 1967. Today, Seck Kia Eenh is performing the All Night Chanting from this evening 3th. September, 2011 till next morning 4th. September, 2011.

The Chetties have been around since the reign of Parameswara. Back then, most of them belong to the group of traders who were living in Kampung Kling and Kampung Belanda.

They originated from the Colomandal Coast, Kalingapatnam, South India and Tamil Nadu.

In the earlier days, there were Chetties holding high posts in the government administration such as that of the Prime Minister. However, things began to change during the Dutch colonization.

The Chetties were imposed strict supervision in their trading which eventually caused to move to remote areas such as Gajah Berang, Bacang and Tranquerah.

As a result of the incident, many Chetties, decided to switch their profession from trading to agriculture.

SEED Water Project SMK Tinggi Melaka, Melaka Malaysia Field engineers in the making?
On 1st July Wengkai Lee (the Schlumberger SEED Champion for the Melaka High School) visited Melaka High School to introduce the water project to around 100 students.

The audience were very enthusiastic and the testing day was quickly fixed for 2nd August 2004. Bing Day (SEED volunteer) and Wengkai went down to join in the fun. On that day 32 students and 2 teachers took part in gathering samples and testing water from three rivers: Sungai Tampin, Sungai Batang Melaka and Sungai Melaka.

Later, on the 23rd of August 2004, a second team of 26 students investigated another river: Sungai Putat. The students all worked very hard on their projects gave excellent presentations on their findings and suggestions for change on 23rd September 2004. Two of the team reports are presented here, listed by team name and edited for presentation on the web site.

SMK Tinggi Melaka joins the SEED Water Project

It all started on 1st July, where myself met for the first time with Mr Yen to discuss on how SEED can bring more benefits and impact to their students after the programme was implemented 3 years ago. A presentation to about 100 students about Water Project and how to use the SEED website was made and received overwhelming results from both teachers and students. The enthusiasm to carry out the Water Project can been seen by a systematic planned Water Project Teams formed by the students under the guidance of Miss Lim, MHS Senior Chemistry Teacher. The Teams are the River Team and the Lake Team and each has its own Survey, Testing, Culture and Story-Telling Team.

On 2nd Aug, Bing Day and myself joined the Malacca High School Water Project Team (about 30 students of Lower Sixers and 2 teachers) on a field trip to survey the main rivers in Malacca. After a Safety Briefing, the bus departed from the school and headed to Sungai Tampin which is located north of Malacca town. State Water Department officials also joined the Team to provide technical and geographical assistance. Lots of laughter and excitement from these youths especially many have not such an upclose encounter with rivers nor ever gave deep thoughts to the source of our daily drinking water. Over two hours, 3 rivers (Sg Tampin, Sg Batang Melaka and Sg Melaka) were sampled and field-tested using the provided Water Test kits on site.

These students will analyze the results of the water tests and will make a presentation to recommend action plans can be done to improve the water quality in September. In addition to this River Testing, there will be an additional group to test the water quality of the Ayer Keroh Recreational Lake in the coming week. It’s a great start for Malacca High School !!!!

Malacca High School gets ready for 185th grand bash

MALACCA: Founded in 1826, Malacca High School (MHS) the second oldest educational institution in the country following the 1816-established Penang Free School, will be marking its historic milestone with a series of sports and games competitions, social events and down memory lane school tours on September 24 and 25.

Close to one thousand five hundred old boys and girls, teachers, staff and loyal supporters from all over Malaysia, Singapore, England, New Zealand and Australia are expected to attend and participate in events while joining hands with the school current enrolment and staff to renew and bond old and new friendships.

Two prominent MHS old boys Datuk Hj Abdul Halim Ali and Dr. Ee Tiang Lock are jointly heading an energetic celebration organising team to finalise plans and proceedings. Supporting the pair are a dedicated group of former teachers (retired) and supporters providing valuable logistic work including producing an anniversary souvenir publication. Organising team spokesperson Dr. Ee disclosed that the celebration would kick off with a two-day games carnival beginning on Sept 24. A six-a-side cricket competition and hockey sixes are among the various sports activties which would held at the school field in the morning and afternoon.

A netball tournament would also be held at the school field in the evening of the same day, he added.

The following day will see a round of competitive golf at the Ayer Keroh Golf and Country Club while a seven-a-side football tourney will be held at the school field in the morning with combined teams made up of past and present students participating, he said.

On Sept 25, the Down Memory Lane Tour of the School would be held complete with a Nostalgic Tuckshop Fare buffet winding up the proceedings. The highlight of the day will be a grand reunion 8-course sit-down dinner at the Equatorial Hotel where former students and their spouses will be the principal guests commencing at 6pm with a fellowship.

Meanwhile, MHS, first established on Dec 7, 1826, occupied the local Anglican Church parsonage with a modest less than two-hundred student enrolment. The school early history records its shifting of premises twice due to increased intake of students.

In 1884, the school moved to a new building at the site of the state former High Court premises close to the Dutch Stadthuys. At this time, there was also an intention of building a new school in Kubu, on the north side of town. However, this plan was aborted when the late Tuan Haji Bachee Ahmad a prominent local resident came forward to offer to sell a plot of land in Banda Kaba to the then school authorities.

In 1928, the new school premises along Jalan Chan Koon Cheng adjacent to Kampong Banda Baba took shape in the form of a two-storey block. Subsequently, further constructions, additions and renovations were made to the original building in stages complete with varied in-house facilities, sections and a large playing field to presently accommodate a two-thousand student enrolment occupying classes ranging from Forms 1 to 6.
