Last week was Children's Book Week and in keeping with tradition, Christine created a display at Albury-Wodonga incorporating this years theme of one world, many stories.

Insync Client Satisfaction Survey 2010

The Insync client satisfaction survey will commence Monday 6^th September and will run until Friday 17^th September.

To encourage participation, three prizes of $200 AUD will be drawn at the end of the survey period.

Please encourage all CSU Library users, whether onshore or offshore, Community members or staff, to complete the survey which will be available online from the Library homepage.

August 21-27 is Children’s Book Week. To celebrate Children's Book Week at Albury-Wodonga, Christine has created a display in the learning commons incorporating this years theme, across the story bridge.

She has done a fantastic job, attracting praise from an Education Lecturer who has requested we keep the display up for another few weeks to enable students from her class to come over and have a look. Thank you also to Carmel from Student Central who helped Christine with the finishing touches of the display.

Prem's Farewell

Today marked Prem Paterson's final day at CSU. Staff at Bathurst (past and present) got together to celebrate Prem's contribution to the Library, and to wish her well in her future endevours.

Prem will be massively missed by staff and students alike at Bathurst from both a work and social perspective. Her commitment to and repoire with the students is second to none, and her smile was infectuous.

Farewell Katie :(

Last Thursday Wagga staff farewelled Katie Hannan. We have enjoyed her company over the past two years and will miss her enthusiasm for life, her environmental activism and all of her creative projects. (not to mention the fact that she has been the first full time Wagga faculty liaison librarian)

ILLs Team Hit the 10k Mark!

The InterLibrary Loans Team reached a massive milestone this week: since the Aleph ILL module was introduced at CSU in March 2009, they’ve processed over 10,000 requests!

They’ve received requests through the module from CSU clients, along with Australian Catholic University, Southern Cross University and NSW Police Force clients, and are hoping to be able to incorporate other libraries into the module soon by integrating with Libraries Australia.

When Rob came to visit Wagga Campus he was wearing an awesome Librarian slogan t-shirt that reads "I want to be a LIBRARIAN". If you want one too, you can buy it online from Cafe Press.

There are loads of other places where you can get funky slogan tshirts, especially Librarian ones. If you've already got one, or some other awesome slogan tshirt, why not get a picture taken and post it to the blog?

Introducing the Bathurst Access Super Awesome Amazing Fish Extravaganza

All good libraries have a mascot (for example, Dewey the Cat or a whole pack of library dogs) so Bathurst’s Access team felt we should have our own furry – or, as it turned out, scaly - friends.

Bruce

Bruce enjoys travel, hiking, extreme sports and camping in the mountains, but he has a softer side and spends his spare time home decorating and likes whipping up a gourmet dinner at a moment’s notice. His favourite movie is Die Hard, but he has been known to secretly tear up during Beaches.

Fergie

Fergie is a flirty Gemini who likes long walks on the beach, Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain. She is a keen competitor in synchronised swimming competitions, her ideal date would be a candlelit dinner for two at a romantic restaurant, and her favourite author is Jane Austen.

Sir Fancypants is the token Royal among the denizens of the fish tank. He spends his time researching genealogy, riding to the hounds and examining his world-class collection of newts. He tried wearing a monocle until recently but found it interfered with his ability to swim in a straight line.

Informit Collections – customise database page Organisations may now customise the display of Informit Collections on the database selection screen. Any Informit Collection may be switched on or off from the display by logging in to Informit Admin. Select User Preferences, then scroll down and press the ‘Edit Custom Collections’ button.

Searching
All Informit Collections may be searched without subscription and articles are available on pay-per-view if you do not have a full content subscription. The Humanities and Social Sciences Collection is enabled by default for new and existing accounts.

Informit Backfiles
Meanjin and Media International Australia are available for perpetual backfile purchase. Browse screens have been modified to incorporate issues of backfile journals where available.

Links between related journal titles
Next and previous hyperlinks are now available between related journals on journal home pages. For example when a journal title has ceased and is followed on by a different name or different ISSN a link will now appear if the content is available.

Accessing Informit via mobile phone
Full text PDF files may now be correctly viewed on mobiles such as BlackBerrys, iPhones and Windows Mobile devices.

Email Alerts – New Databases
The search alerts functionality has been extended to cover new databases. Alerts are now available for:
● Family & Society Plus
● FAMILY
● AEI
● AGIS
● APAIS
● AMI

Collections – Catalogue Records
MARC records are now available for the Business and Engineering Collections.

Other Fixes / Changes
● References to Informit e-Library have been updated to Informit Collections.

Mount Gambier Public Library

My holidays in November/December and January took me on a camping road trip throughout NSW, ACT, Victoria and South Australia (not to mention a side trip to New Zealand!). On the way, I passed through Mount Gambier with a friend and fellow Librarian. We stumbled across the recently opened Mount Gambier Public Library. This has got to be one of the most amazing public libraries I have seen in such a long time. In fact, even their website is great too!

Bathurst Collection Services Gremlins have done it again...

Thurgoona Learning Commons stack lights are complete

The stack lighting program was completed on Monday. The lights are activated by movement, ie someone entering the row between stacks, and are also linked to light level control hence if there is sufficient natural light the stack lights won’t operate.
Each aisle between stacks operates independently hence even if it’s bright in part of the collection (eg opposite windows) the lighting will still operate in the “darker” areas.
The lights will turn off after a set period (10 minutes) when no movement is detected in the aisle.
The lights will activate on movement at any time/day including after library hours and weekends.

UNILINC has “switched on” to Primo (beta view)

Primo provides an integrated search interface for CSU Library resources, like Aleph, Digitool, Metalib & SFX, making it a single starting point for searching books, electronic resources, digital media, CSU Research outputs and other resources held by CSU Library collection.

CSU Primo view offers you three tabs “Books & More” ,”Online-resources” & “Subject Reserve”. Within each tab you have one or more library resources listed below, so that a search can be restricted to only those records.

You can easily refine your search results by "available" and "online" resources. In addition, the search facets feature can be used - this can be found on the left-hand side of the screen. It also offers you a “Did you mean?” search feature, similar to other web search engines.

The system also provides you with social networking features. Once you have signed in you can assign tags or add reviews for the item and share these with other Library users.

The main CSU front end can be accessed on CSU's Primo test page.

The main tab "Books and more" contains all catalogue titles (from Aleph), all DigiTool data, SFX, eBooks and MetaLib CKB database records.

The "Online Resources" tab is for searching remote databases (the MetaLib databases setup under QuickSets).

"Subject Reserve" contains only subject reserve titles (reserve and ereserve collections only).

The DigiTool frontend (CRO interface) can be accessed on CSU's CRO-Primo test page.

Only CRO titles are searchable here. This interface will eventually replace DigiTool's Resource Discovery interface.

Currently Aleph data is updated once per day. Eventually the availability status will be updated on an hourly basis. Note: The Real Time Availability updates the loan status on-the-fly anyway.

DigiTool data is also updated once per day. SFX, eBook and MetaLib database IRD records are updated once per month.

I&LS Parliament sits in Canberra

On a balmy spring day last Wednesday, the Information & Liaison Services team travelled from Wagga, Bathurst, Orange and Albury to St Mark's in Canberra for a follow up to our first planning meeting in Young last year.

We spent a very productive and interesting afternoon and morning on Thursday discussing issues of significance, and upcoming challenges for our section, the division, and the university.

Among the topics in the program were the outcomes of the Division Planning Meeting; the impacts of the Student Service Centre; the Library website; the new Content Management System; the CSU Web 2.0 project; how best to support various cohorts; and future directions for the section.

The Faculty Liaison staff also took advantage of a rare opportunity to meet together to review their current delivery of services to academic staff and postgraduate students, and identify possible new strategies and services.

We appreciated getting to meet St Mark's staff in person and having a guided tour of the Campus and Library. The rare bible collection was of great interest with bibles dating back to the 15th Century. It was amazing to think that one of the bibles was possibly Shakespeare's, and another was the first bible in English.

Our time in Canberra was a great opportunity to think about where we are and where we're going as a team. Equally importantly, it was a chance to socialise informally with the people we work with remotely all year.

That was the message with which keynote speaker, Irena Yashin-Shaw, kickstarted the 30th ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference in Adelaide recently. Pushing through anxiety, she assured us, can change your perception of what you can do.

Irena's words had some relevance to my situation. When it was first proposed that I attend the conference, I did have anxieties about co-authoring a paper and about going to a big conference on my own. I also felt some responsibility in representing CSU Library. These were all things I had never done before. Actually presenting our short paper was also a new experience. Fortunately, I didn't succumb to stage fright, the presentation seemed to go quite well, and people even seemed very interested.

Looking back now, I think I gained a lot out of the Conference. I found all the sessions stimulating and relevant, and I enjoyed meeting people from different libraries all over Australia. All in all, it was a worthwhile experience and one I would recommend.

Opening of the Digital Library Usability Lab

The opening of the Digital Library Usability Lab was well represented by staff from the Schools of Computing & Mathematics, Information Studies and Education along with the Divisions of IT, Learning & Teaching Services and Library Services.

The creation of the Lab was a joint effort between the Division of Library Services and the School of Information Studies and has been setup to facilitate Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research and transform the experiences that people have with new technologies. The purpose of the lab is to study the needs of computer users to evaluate and develop technologies.

A brief demonstration was conducted by a lecturer from the School of Information Studies followed by a morning tea with scones, jam and cream.
