കേരളത്തിലെ മൂന്നരക്കോടിക്ക് മേലെ വരുന്ന ജനങ്ങളില്‍ എത്രപേര്‍ തങ്ങളില്‍ പലരുടേയും അന്തകനാകാന്‍ സാദ്ധ്യതയുള്ള മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ ഡാമിനെപ്പറ്റിയും അതിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അവസ്ഥയെപ്പറ്റിയും ബോധവാന്മാരാണ്? ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിനും കാര്യമായൊന്നും അറിയില്ല എന്ന് തന്നെ വേണം കരുതാന്‍ .

ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് മലയാളികളുടെ തലയ്ക്ക് മുകളില്‍ ഡെമോക്ലസ്സിന്റെ വാള് പോലെ മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ തൂങ്ങിയാടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് കാലം കുറേയാകുന്നു. നിര്‍മ്മാണ കാലത്ത് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ അണക്കെട്ട് ഇതായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, ചുണ്ണാമ്പും സുര്‍ക്കി മിശ്രിതവും കരിങ്കല്ലുമൊക്കെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കിയ 113 വര്‍ഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ള മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ അണക്കെട്ടാണ് ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലുള്ളതില്‍ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള ഭൂഗുരുത്വ അണക്കെട്ട്.

1896 ല്‍ ഈ അണക്കെട്ട് നിര്‍മ്മാണം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയ കാലത്ത്, 50 കൊല്ലത്തിലധികം ഇത്തരം അണക്കെട്ടുകള്‍ക്ക് ആയുസ്സില്ലെന്ന് അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ശില്‍പ്പിയായ ബെന്നി കുക്ക് എന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരന്‍ തന്നെ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കിയാല്‍പ്പോലും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന് മുന്നേ തന്നെ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ കാലാവധി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. സായിപ്പ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ അണക്കെട്ടായതുകൊണ്ട് മാത്രമാണ് പിന്നെയും 63 കൊല്ലമായി അതിങ്ങനെ പൊട്ടാതെ നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടുകാര്‍ ആരെങ്കിലുമാണ് ഡാമുണ്ടാക്കിയതെങ്കില്‍ ഇതിനോടകം മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ അണക്കെട്ട് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ പ്ലാറ്റിനം ജ്യൂബിലി മലയാളികള്‍ ആഘോഷിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമായിരുന്നു.

കേരളത്തിലാണ് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ ഡാം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതെങ്കിലും തമിഴ്നാടാണ് ഡാമിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥര്‍ . അക്കഥകളൊക്കെ പറയാന്‍ പോയാല്‍ മണ്ടത്തരങ്ങളുടെ സര്‍ദാര്‍ജിക്കഥ പരമ്പര പോലെ കേട്ടിരുന്ന് ചിരിക്കാനുള്ള വകയുണ്ട്.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് തേനി, മദുര, ദിണ്ടിക്കല്‍, രാമനാഥപുരം എന്നീ തമിഴ് പ്രവിശ്യകള്‍ ജലക്ഷാമം അനുഭവിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിനിപ്പുറമുള്ള കേരളത്തിലെ പെരിയാര്‍ തീരങ്ങളില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കമായിരുന്നു. ഇതിന് സായിപ്പ് കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച പ്രതിവിധിയാണ് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ അണക്കെട്ട്. പെരിയാര്‍ നദിയിലെ വെള്ളം അണകെട്ടി പശ്ചിമഘട്ടം തുരന്ന് മദുരയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്ന വൈഗൈ നദിയിലെത്തിക്കാനിട്ട പദ്ധതിയാണ് ഇന്നിപ്പോള്‍ മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര്‍ ഡാം എന്ന തലവേദനയായി മലയാളിയുടെ ഉറക്കം കെടുത്തുന്നത്.

1886 ഒക്ടോബര്‍ 29ന് പെരിയാര്‍ പാട്ടക്കരാര്‍ പ്രകാരം പെരിയാര്‍ നദിയുടെ 155 അടി ഉയരത്തില്‍ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന 8000 ഏക്കര്‍ സ്ഥലത്തിന് പുറമെ അണക്കെട്ട് നിര്‍മ്മാണത്തിനായി 100 ഏക്കര്‍ സ്ഥലവും തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ രാജാവായിരുന്ന വിശാഖം തിരുനാള്‍ രാമവര്‍മ്മ അന്നത്തെ മദിരാശി സര്‍ക്കാറിന് പാട്ടമായി നല്‍കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. കരാറുപ്രകാരം പാട്ടത്തുകയായി ഏക്കറിനു 5 രൂപയെന്ന കണക്കില്‍ 40,000 രൂപ വര്‍ഷം തോറും കേരളത്തിന് ലഭിക്കും . 50 വര്‍ഷം മാത്രം ആയുസ്സ് കണക്കാക്കിയിരുന്ന ‍ഡാമിന്റെ കരാര്‍ കാലയളവ് 999 വര്‍ഷമാണെന്നുള്ളതാണ് വിരോധാഭാസം. ആദ്യകരാര്‍ കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ വേണമെങ്കില്‍ വീണ്ടുമൊരു 999 വര്‍ഷത്തേക്ക് കരാര്‍ പുതുക്കുന്നതിന് വിരോധമൊന്നും ഇല്ലെന്നുള്ള മറ്റൊരു മണ്ടത്തരവും കൂടെ കരാറിലുണ്ട്.

അണക്കെട്ടില്‍ ചോര്‍ച്ചയും മറ്റും വരാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതോടെയായിരിക്കണം അണക്കെട്ട് ദുര്‍ബ്ബലമാണെന്നും ജലനിരപ്പ് 136 അടിക്ക് മുകളില്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്താന്‍ പറ്റില്ലെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് കേരളവും തമിഴ്നാടും തമ്മിലുള്ള നിയമ യുദ്ധങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. (ഇതിന് പിന്നില്‍ മറ്റെന്തെങ്കിലും രാഷ്ട്രീയം ഉണ്ടോയെന്നറിയില്ല.) ഡാം പൊട്ടിയാലും തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലേക്ക് വെള്ളമൊഴുകി അവര്‍ക്ക് അപകടം ഒന്നുമുണ്ടാകില്ല എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് കിട്ടുന്നിടത്തോളം കാലം വെള്ളം ഊറ്റാനാണ് തമിഴ്നാടിന്റെ പദ്ധതി. ഡാം പൊട്ടിയാല്‍ 35 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ താഴെയുള്ള ഇടുക്കി ഡാം ആ വെള്ളം മുഴുവന്‍ താങ്ങിക്കോളും എന്നുള്ള മുടന്തന്‍ ന്യായങ്ങളും തമിഴ്നാട് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നിരത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇടുക്കി ഡാം അല്ലാതെ തന്നെ നിറഞ്ഞുകവിയാറുണ്ടെന്നും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിലെ വെള്ളം കൂടെ താങ്ങാന്‍ ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിന് ആകില്ലെന്നുമുള്ളത് പകല്‍ പോലെ വ്യക്തമായ കാര്യമാണ്. ഇനി അഥവാ ഇടുക്കി ഡാം ഈ വെള്ളം മുഴുവന്‍ താങ്ങിയാലും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിനും ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിനും ഇടയില്‍ പെരിയാര്‍ തീരത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്ന പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവന് ഒരു വിലയുമില്ലേ ?

ആയുസ്സെത്തിയ അണക്കെട്ടെങ്ങാനും പൊട്ടിയാലുള്ള അവസ്ഥയെപ്പറ്റി ചിന്തിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയാല്‍ അഞ്ചാറ് ജില്ലകളിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സമാധാനത്തോടെ റോഡിലിറങ്ങാനും പറ്റില്ല, വീട്ടിലിരിക്കാനും പറ്റില്ല. ഇടുക്കിയിലുള്ള ഒരു ബ്ലോഗ് സുഹൃത്ത് ഈയിടയ്ക്ക് എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു അദ്ദേഹം തെങ്ങ് കയറ്റം പഠിക്കാന്‍ പോകുകയാണെന്ന്. തെങ്ങ് കയറ്റം പഠിക്കുന്നത് നല്ലതാണ്. തെങ്ങുകയറ്റത്തൊഴിലാളി ക്ഷാമം നേരിടുന്ന ഇക്കാലത്ത് കുറച്ച് കാലം തേങ്ങയിടാന്‍ മറ്റാരേയും ആശ്രയിക്കേണ്ടി വരില്ല എന്നല്ലാതെ, ഡാം പൊട്ടുന്ന സമയത്ത് തെങ്ങില്‍ക്കയറി രക്ഷപ്പെടാമെന്നൊന്നും ആരും കരുതേണ്ട. എറണാകുളത്ത് ഹൈക്കോര്‍ട്ട് കെട്ടിടത്തിന്റെ നാലാം നിലയില്‍ വരെ വെള്ളം കയറുമെന്നാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. അപ്പോള്‍പ്പിന്നെ ഇടുക്കിയിലുള്ള തെങ്ങിന്റെ മണ്ടയില്‍ക്കയറി രക്ഷപെടാമെന്നുള്ളത് വ്യാമോഹം മാത്രമല്ലേ ?

അപകടം എന്തെങ്കിലും പിണഞ്ഞാല്‍ , കണക്കുകള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു്‌ ശരിയാണെങ്കില്‍ ഇടുക്കി, കോട്ടയം, പത്തനംതിട്ട, എറണാകുളം, തൃശൂര്‍ ‍, ആലപ്പുഴ എന്നീ ജില്ലകളിലായി കുറഞ്ഞത് 40 ലക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളെങ്കിലും ചത്തൊടുങ്ങും. പണ്ഢിതനും, പാമരനും, പണമുള്ളവനും, പണമില്ലാത്തവനും, സിനിമാക്കാരനും, രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരനും, കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍പ്പിടിയുള്ളവനും, പിടില്ലാത്തവനും, കുട്ടികളും, വലിയവരുമെല്ലാമടക്കമുള്ള ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് മനുഷ്യാത്മാക്കള്‍ വീട്ടിലും, റോട്ടിലും, പാടത്തും, പറമ്പിലുമൊക്കെയായി ചത്തുമലക്കും. കുറേയധികം പേര്‍ ആര്‍ക്കും ബുദ്ധിമൊട്ടൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാക്കാതെ അറബിക്കടലിന്റെ അഗാധതയില്‍ സമാധിയാകും. കന്നുകാലികള്‍ അടക്കമുള്ള മിണ്ടാപ്രാണികളുടെ കണക്കൊന്നും മുകളില്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ 40 ലക്ഷത്തില്‍ പെടുന്നില്ല.

കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളിലും വാഹനങ്ങളിലുമൊക്കെയായി കുടുങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന ഇത്രയുമധികം ശവശരീരങ്ങള്‍ 24 മണിക്കൂറിനകം കണ്ടെടുത്ത് ശരിയാംവണ്ണം മറവുചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കില്‍, ജീവനോടെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ബാക്കിയുള്ള മനുഷ്യജന്മങ്ങള്‍ പകര്‍ച്ചവ്യാധികളും, മറ്റ് രോഗങ്ങളും പിടിച്ചു്‌ നരകിച്ചു്‌ ചാകും. ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിന്റെ പേരില്‍ പടനയിക്കുന്ന തമിഴനും, ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനുണ്ടാകും. നദീജലം നഷ്ടമായതുകൊണ്ട് തേനി, മദുര, ദിണ്ടിക്കല്‍, രാമനാഥപുരം എന്നിങ്ങനെ കൃഷിയെ മാത്രം ആശ്രയിച്ച് കഴിയുന്ന പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് തമിഴ് മക്കള്‍ വരള്‍ച്ചയും പട്ടിണിയും കൊണ്ട് വലയും. ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട സമയത്ത് സര്‍ദാര്‍ജിമാര്‍ക്ക് നേരെ പൊതുജനം ആക്രമണം അഴിച്ചുവിട്ടതുപൊലെ കണ്‍‌മുന്നില്‍ വന്നുപെടുന്ന തമിഴന്മാരോട് മലയാളികള്‍ വികാരപ്രകടനം വല്ലതും നടത്തുകയും അതേ നാണയത്തില്‍ തമിഴ് മക്കള്‍ പ്രതികരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്താല്‍ ഒരു വംശീയകലാപംതന്നെ രാജ്യത്ത് പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ടെന്ന് വരും.

ഇതെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന മലയാളിയും, തമിഴനും, ഈ ദാരുണസംഭവത്തിന്റെ പഴി അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും, ചാരി, വീണ്ടും കാലം കഴിക്കും. ഒരു രാജാവിന് പറ്റിയ അബദ്ധം നാളിത്ര കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും തിരുത്താനാകാതെ പ്രജകളെ പരിപാലിക്കുന്നെന്ന പേരില്‍ നികുതിപ്പണം തിന്നുകുടിച്ച് സുഖിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാരേയും അവരുടെ പിണിയാളുകളേയും നാമൊക്കെ പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും വന്‍ ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് തലസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കും കേന്ദ്രത്തിലേക്കും അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. ആ രാഷ്ടീയവിഷജീവികളൊക്കെയും ഇടതും, വലതും, കളിച്ചു്‌, വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും, മാറി മാറി മലയാളസമൂഹത്തെയൊന്നാകെ കൊള്ളയടിക്കും.

1979 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 11ന് കനത്ത മഴയില്‍ ഗുജറാത്തിലെ മോര്‍വി ഡാം തകര്‍ന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായതാണ് സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഡാം ദുരന്തം. 20 മിനിറ്റിനകം 15,000ത്തോളം ജനങ്ങളാണ് അന്ന് മോര്‍വി പട്ടണത്തില്‍ മണ്ണോട് ചേര്‍ന്നത്.

രണ്ടാഴ്ച്ച മുന്‍പ് അതിശക്തമായ മഴകാരണം തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ ആളിയാര്‍ ഡാം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള്‍ പാലക്കാട്ടെ മൂലത്തറ റെഗുലേറ്റര്‍ തകര്‍ന്ന് വിലപ്പെട്ട മനുഷ്യജീവനൊപ്പം 50 കോടിയില്‍പ്പരം രൂപയുടെ നാശന‍ഷ്ടങ്ങളാണുണ്ടായത്.

2006 ആഗസ്റ്റില്‍ കനത്തമഴകാരണം രാജസ്ഥാനിലെ ബജാജ് സാഗര്‍ ഡാമിലെ അധിക ജലം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കിപത്രങ്ങള്‍ കുറേനാളുകള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷമാണെങ്കിലും നേരില്‍ കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ള ഒരാളാണ് ഞാന്‍. അവിടെ പലയിടത്തും വെള്ളം ഇരച്ചുകയറിയതു്‌ രാത്രിയായതുകൊണ്ടു്‌ ഗ്രാമവാസികളില്‍ പലരും ഉറക്കത്തില്‍ത്തന്നെ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു. നൂറുകണക്കിനു്‌ കന്നുകാലികളും, മിണ്ടാപ്രാണികളും ചത്തൊടുങ്ങി. ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയിലുള്ള പ്രത്യേകത കാരണം മാസങ്ങളോളം ഈ വെള്ളം താഴ്ന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ കെട്ടിക്കിടന്നു്‌ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാക്കി.തൊട്ടടുത്ത സംസ്ഥാനമായ ഗുജറാത്തിലും ഈ ഡാമില്‍ നിന്നൊഴുകിയ വെള്ളം ഒരുപാടു്‌ നാശങ്ങള്‍ വിതച്ചു. ഗുജറാത്തിലെ രക്ഷാപ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത മുന്‍സൈനികനും ഹെലിക്കോപ്റ്റര്‍ പൈലറ്റുമായ എന്റെ അമ്മാവന്‍ ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ മോഹന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ നിന്ന് ആ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ഭീകരമുഖം മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും എനിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഇതൊക്കെക്കൊണ്ടാകാം 2 കൊല്ലത്തിലധികമായി, എന്നും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ക്ക് ഞാന്‍ കാതോര്‍ക്കുന്നത് ഒരു ഉള്‍ക്കിടിലത്തോടെ മാത്രമാണ്.

മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം എന്നത് അധികാ‍രക്കസേരകളില്‍ ഇരിക്കുന്ന മഹാന്മാര്‍ക്കൊക്കെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞോ ? അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ആയുസ്സിന്റെ 20 ഇരട്ടിയേക്കാളധികം കാലത്തേക്ക് അതില്‍ നിന്ന് അയല്‍ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന് വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കാമെന്നുള്ള കരാറിന് കൂട്ടുനിന്ന രാജാവിനും, (രാജാവിനെ സായിപ്പ് നിര്‍ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ച് സമ്മതിപ്പിച്ചതാണെന്നുള്ളത് വിസ്മരിക്കുന്നില്ല.) ആ കരാര്‍പ്രകാരം ഇനിയും മുന്നോട്ട് പോയാല്‍ ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് പ്രജകള്‍ ചത്തടിയുമെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിട്ടും രാഷ്ട്രീയം കളിക്കുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാര്‍ക്കും, മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം തൊട്ട് തീണ്ടിയിട്ടില്ലേ ?

സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ രണ്ടിന്റേയും കേസ് കോടതിയിലിട്ട് തട്ടിക്കളിക്കുന്ന സുപ്രീം കോടതി എന്ന് പറയുന്ന പരമോന്നത നീതിന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ളത് മനുഷ്യന്മാര്‍ തന്നെയല്ല എന്നുണ്ടോ ? ഇതെന്താ പിടികിട്ടാപ്പുള്ളിയോ, തെളിവില്ലാതെ കിടക്കുന്ന കേസോ മറ്റോ ആണോ ഇങ്ങനെ നീട്ടിനീട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്‍ ? അടുത്ത ഹിയറിങ്ങ് ഇനി ജനുവരിയിലാണ് പോലും. രണ്ട് കൂട്ടര്‍ക്കും 9 ദിവസം വീ‍തം വേണമത്രേ കേസ് വാദിച്ച് തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍!

ഈ കേസ് തീര്‍പ്പാക്കാന്‍ എന്താണിത്ര കാലതാമസം ? ഇതിനേക്കാള്‍ വലിയ ഏത് കേസാണ് സുപ്രീം കോടതിയില്‍ അടിയന്തിരമായി തീരുമാനം കാത്തുകിടക്കുന്നത് ? എന്തോന്നാണ് ഇത്ര വാദിക്കാന്‍ ? ഡാമിലെ വെള്ളം കുറച്ച് ദിവസമെടുത്തിട്ടായാലും, ആളപായമില്ലാത്ത രീതിയില്‍ ഒന്ന് തുറന്ന് വിട്ട് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അതിന്റെ ശോചനീയാവസ്ഥ മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ സുപ്രീം കോടതിക്ക് ഒരു ശ്രമം നടത്തി നോക്കിക്കൂടെ ? ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവന്‍ അപകടത്തിലാകുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു കേസാകുമ്പോള്‍ കോടതി നേരിട്ടിടപെട്ട് അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യുന്നതില്‍ എന്താണ് തെറ്റ് എന്ന് മാത്രമേ നിയമമറിയാത്ത സാധാരണക്കാരനായ എനിക്ക് ചിന്തിക്കാനാകുന്നുള്ളൂ.

Who was Mona Lisa?

Lisa del Giocondo (née Gherardini; 15 June 1479 – 15 July 1542, or c. 1551), also known as Lisa Gherardini, Lisa di Antonio Maria (or Antonmaria) Gherardini, La Gioconda, and Mona Lisa, was a member of the Gherardini family of Florence and Tuscany in Italy. Her name was given to Mona Lisa, her portrait commissioned by her husband and painted by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance.

Little is known about Lisa's life. Born in Florence and married as a teenager to a cloth and silk merchant who later became a local official, she was mother to six children and led what is thought to have been a comfortable and ordinary middle-class life. Lisa outlived her husband, who was considerably her senior.

At this stage Lisa would have been over twenty-four years of age, by the standards of the time she was not in any way considered particularly beautiful, though Leonardo saw certain qualities which have now made her the most heavily insured woman in history.

Centuries after Lisa's death, Mona Lisa became the world's most famous painting and took on a life separate from Lisa, the woman. Speculation by scholars and hobbyists made the work of art a globally recognized icon and an object of commercialization.

The painting and the background:-

In the foreground, there is a woman sitting on a chair. Her right hand is placed on her left wrist and her left hand is gripping the arm of the chair on which she is sitting. Her torso is turned towards us, though her chair is parallel to the picture. Her torso and face might be facing the viewer, but her eyes are looking at something at the viewer's right, as though the model was distracted by something. Nevertheless, there is something enticing about her facial expression.

When the viewer is admiring the Mona Lisa, the first thing that he or she usually notices is her smile, which seems strange and unfathomable. We might never fully understand the true meaning of this facial expression. Though art historians have found out how Leonardo was able to create the smile. Leonardo created it by "barely raising the corner of the mouth.” Her dress, which seems to be plain, is black and her hair falls down to her shoulders. She isn't wearing any jewelry. Though the viewer doesn't see it, she seems to be sitting on a balcony. Behind her, Leonardo has painted "a complex, strange and distant landscape." When the Mona Lisa was first painted, the viewers could see two columns, one on each side of the model. Unfortunately, these columns were cut, after Leonardo's death. Though before the painting was cut, the columns helped reveal more of the edge of the balcony.

Mona Lisa's hair is smooth with only the covering of a black veil, hands are free of rings or bracelets and nothing adorns her neck. There are small intricate loops across the neckline of her dress; such was Leonardo's interest in codes that many people have searched in vain for a message in these loops. This painting went against all the trends of the time and is a perfect example of how Leonardo never followed traditions. He abandoned the usual poses, which had subjects shown as stiff and upright, replacing this with a relaxed sitter, her beautifully painted hands resting easily on the arm of her chair.

Starting of the brilliant painting:-

Historians agree that Leonardo commenced the painting of Mona Lisa in 1503, working on it for approximately four years and keeping it himself for some years after. Supposedly this was because Mona Lisa was Leonardo's favorite painting and he was loathe to part with it, however it may also have been because the painting was unfinished. Leonardo had no income during the spring of 1503, which may in part explain his interest in a private portrait. But later that year, he most likely had to delay his work on Mona Lisa when he received payment for starting The Battle of Anghiari, which was a more valuable commission and one he was contracted to complete by February 1505. Later, he is thought to have continued to work on Mona Lisa for three years after he moved to France and to have finished it shortly before he died in 1519. Leonardo took the painting from Italy to France in 1516 when King François I invited the painter to work at the Clos Lucé near the king's castle in Amboise. In 1506 Leonardo considered the portrait unfinished. He was not paid for the work and did not deliver it to his client. The artist's paintings traveled with him throughout his life, and he may have completed Mona Lisa many years later in France,in one estimation by 1516.

Whatever the reason, much later it was sold to the King of France for four thousand gold crowns. The world has talked about it ever since. After the revolution in France the painting was transferred to the Louvre. Napoleon took possession of it using the panel to decorate his bedroom. Upon his banishment from France Mona Lisa once more returned to the care of the Louvre. What is certain is that the painting was never passed onto the rightful owner, that being the man who originally commissioned and presumably paid for it.

The first written reference to the painting appears in the diary of Antonio de' Beatis who visited Leonardo on the 10th October 1517. He was shown three paintings by the master, who was aged sixty-five at the time. These three consisted of one of the Madonna and Child in the lap of St. Anne, one of a young St. John the Baptist and a third of a Florentine lady.

Beauty of Mona Lisa:-

Mona Lisa fulfilled 15th- and early 16th century requirements for portraying a woman of virtue. Lisa is portrayed as a faithful wife through gesture—her right hand rests over her left. Leonardo also presented Lisa as fashionable and successful, perhaps more well-off than she was. Her dark garments and black veil were Spanish-influenced high fashion; they are not a depiction of mourning for her first daughter, as some scholars have proposed. The portrait is strikingly large; its size is equal to that of commissions acquired by wealthier art patrons of the time.

Now scientists claim to have found the answer to these changes, namely our eyes that sends random signals to the brain. They believe that the Mona Lisa's smile can be seen depending on the cells in the retina and what channels to use the image into the brain. Different cells within the eye are designed to take a variety of colors, contrast, background and background front. All depends on what cells first captures the image and what channel is used to interpret the brain. These channels codify the data based on object size, clarity, brightness and location of the visual field.

Various other suggestions have also been made as to the reason behind the smile including the simple idea that during this period in history women were instructed to smile only with one side of their mouths so as to add an air of mystery and elegance. An Italian doctor's answer was that the woman suffered from bruxism; this is an unconscious habit of grinding the teeth during sleep or times of great stress. The long months of sitting for the portrait could well have triggered an attack of teeth grinding. Leonardo did attempt to keep his subject relaxed and entertained with the use of music; he had six musicians to play for her plus and installed a musical fountain invented by himself. Different, beautiful works were read out loud and a white Persian cat and a greyhound bitch were there for playing with. The most expressive parts of the human face are the outer points of the lips and eyes. Leonardo has deliberately left these areas in shadow which creates the effect of causing different people to read different emotions on the face of the sitter, whomever she may be.

Eyebrows and eyelashes

Now, a French engineer and inventor say he's uncovered part of the enigma. Pascal Cotte announced at a press conference that he has found definitive proof that when Leonardo da Vinci painted the original portrait he included "Mona Lisa's" lashes and brows. Cotte examined the world's most famous painting using a high-definition camera of his own design.The device scanned a 240-million pixel image using 13 light spectrums, including ultra-violet and infrared.

The resulting ultra-high resolution photograph of 150,000 dots per inch yielded a reproduction of the "Mona Lisa's" face magnified 24 times. And there Cotte found the evidence he sought -- a single brushstroke of a single hair above the left brow. Watch as expert announces findings on "Mona Lisa"

"One day I say, if I can find only one hair, only one hair of the eyebrow, I will have definitively the proof that originally Leonardo da Vinci had painted eyelash and eyebrow," said Cotte. So, if she once had lashes, where did they go? Possibly faded pigment, Cotte suggested, or possibly a poor attempt to clean the painting. "And if you look closely at the eye of 'Mona Lisa' you can clearly see that the cracks around the eye have slightly disappeared, and that may be explained that one day a curator or restorer cleaned the eye, and cleaning the eye, removed, probably removed the eyelashes and eyebrow," he said. Cotte's high resolution camera led him to numerous additional discoveries about the enigmatic artwork.

The infrared layer of the image shows that the fingers of the "Mona Lisa's" left hand were originally painted in a slightly different position than in the final portrait.

Cotte said the change in position was the result of a lap blanket held by Leonardo's model. In today's faded image the blanket is all but obscured, but the highly detailed camera detected the faded pigment.

"It was really the first time that we have this kind of position of the arm," Cotte said, "and after Leonardo da Vinci, thousands of painters have made a copy of this position but without understanding why we have this position. The real justification of the position of the wrist is to hold the blanket on her stomach. It's really a great, for me, it's really a great discovery." One of the results of Cotte's work is a "virtual" restoration of the painting, an exact replica showing the original colors as they would have looked when the painting was new. The skin tones of Leonardo's model appear as a warm pink and the sky behind her is a glowing blue, far different from the gray-green tint that covers the artwork today. That dark patina is the result of 500 years of aging, according to Cotte. Cotte presented numerous other findings within the infrared layer he photographed. The researcher said the "Mona Lisa's" smile was originally slightly wider than it appears today, and, in fact, so was her entire face.

Leonardo kept this painting with him for more than a decade, and is said to have worked on it up until his death. The Renaissance artist once said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned."

Background of the painting

Leonardo used a pyramid design to place the woman simply and calmly in the space of the painting. Her folded hands form the front corner of the pyramid. Her breast, neck and face glow in the same light that models her hands. The light gives the variety of living surfaces an underlying geometry of spheres and circles. Leonardo referred to a seemingly simple formula for seated female figure: the images of seated Madonna, which were widespread at the time. He effectively modified this formula in order to create the visual impression of distance between the sitter and the observer. The armrest of the chair functions as a dividing element between Mona Lisa and the viewer.

Most art historians believe the background, which features valleys and mountains, is an idealised, composite landscape drawn from the artist's imagination. Using the techniques of sfumato and chiaroscuro, the landscape becomes ethereal and idealized, though the bridge is often identified as the Buriano, near Arezzo. The background appears timeless, infinite with atmospheric light that gives the impression of being changeable.

Other revelations include:

· Lace on Mona Lisa's dress.

· The transparency of the veil shows da Vinci first painted a landscape and then used transparency techniques to paint the veil atop it.

· A change in the position of the left index and middle finger.

· The elbow was repaired from damage due to a rock thrown at the painting in 1956.

· The blanket covering Mona Lisa's knees also covers her stomach.

· The left finger was not completely finished.

· A blotch mark on the corner of the eye and chin are varnish accidents, countering claims that Mona Lisa was sick.

· And the Mona Lisa was painted on uncut poplar board, contrary to speculations.

Technique used:-

Leonardo created this painting with oil on wood. The painter uses the sfumato technique, which means smoky' or vanished in smoke' in Italian. This technique "consisted in building up layers of paint from dark to light, letting the previous one come through, thus achieving, through a play of shadows and lights, the optical illusion of relief." The finished product appears as though a veil of smoke had drifted between the subject of the painting and the viewer, adding some brightness to the pure darks and blocking some of the pure brights of the subject.It is not a difficult technique in practice. It requires competence in brushwork and judgement of value (brightness) but does not necessarily require a high degree of skill.

The Situation today:-

The situation today is that the Mona Lisa has become so well-known that it may only be viewed behind thick protective glass after battling through a large crowd of sightseers. The cover of triplex glass which protects the painting was gifted by the Japanese during the Mona Lisa's 1974 visit to Japan -- that being the last time it left the museum. By international agreement the painting will no longer be displayed in other countries but will stay safely on display at the Louvre in Paris where it may be properly protected against further damage, theft or attack. The bulletproof box is kept at a constant 68 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of 55 percent; a built-in air conditioner and nine pounds of silica gel ensure no change in the air condition. Once a year the box is opened to check the painting and for maintenance on the air conditioning system.

The last work done on the panel was in the 1950's when age spots were removed during a cleaning. Suggestions that the painting should experience a thorough facelift involving the removal of layers of resin, lacquer and varnish from the past 500 years have received a firm thumbs down from the Louvre. Computer restoration shows that the colours of the painting may be quite different without the grime that presently covers it. Rosy cheeks instead of sickly yellow, pale blue skies instead of the present green glow. On the downside, any attempt to clean the painting may result in irreparable damage from the various solvents required to remove the varnish and there is no guarantee the suspected bright colours exist below the coatings which have been applied over the years as a protectant. For those lucky enough to have viewed the work under natural light state there is still a surprising amount of colour evident to the eye, maybe more is below the grime, but no one dares to clean her. X-rays have shown there are three different versions of the Mona Lisa hidden under the present one.

Display:-

On April 6, 2005—following a period of curatorial maintenance, recording, and analysis—the painting was moved to a new location within the museum's Salle des États. It is displayed in a purpose-built, climate-controlled enclosure behind bulletproof glass. The renovation of the gallery where the painting now resides was financed by the Japanese broadcaster Nippon Television. About 6 million people view the painting at the Louvre each year.

A panel of international experts, reviewed 20 years' worth of research to determine the cause of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) extinction, which happened around 65 million years ago. The extinction wiped out more than half of all species on the planet, including the dinosaurs, bird-like pterosaurs and large marine reptiles, clearing the way for mammals to become the dominant species on Earth.

The new review of the evidence shows that the extinction was caused by a massive asteroid slamming into Earth at Chicxulub (pronounced chick-shoo-loob) in Mexico. The asteroid, which was around 15 kilometres wide, is believed to have hit Earth with a force one billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. It would have blasted material at high velocity into the atmosphere, triggering a chain of events that caused a global winter, wiping out much of life on Earth in a matter of days.

Scientists have previously argued about whether the extinction was caused by the asteroid or by volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps in India, where there were a series of super volcanic eruptions that lasted approximately 1.5 million years. These eruptions spewed 1,100,000 kms of basalt lava across the Deccan Traps, which would have been enough to fill the Black Sea twice, and were thought to have caused a cooling of the atmosphere and acid rain on a global scale.

In the new study, scientists analysed the work of palaeontologists, geochemists, climate modellers, geophysicists and sedimentologists who have been collecting evidence about the KT extinction over the last 20 years. Geological records show that the event that triggered the extinction destroyed marine and land ecosystems rapidly, according to the researchers, who conclude that the Chicxulub asteroid impact is the only plausible explanation for this.

Despite evidence for relatively active volcanism in Deccan Traps at the time, marine and land ecosystems showed only minor changes within the 500,000 years before the time of the KT extinction. Furthermore, computer models and observational data suggest that the release of gases such as sulphur into the atmosphere after each volcanic eruption in the Deccan Traps would have had a short lived effect on the planet. These would not cause enough damage to create a rapid mass extinction of land and marine species.

Dr Joanna Morgan, co-author of the review from the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, said: "We now have great confidence that an asteroid was the cause of the KT extinction. This triggered large-scale fires, earthquakes measuring more than 10 on the Richter scale, and continental landslides, which created tsunamis. However, the final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs happened when blasted material was ejected at high velocity into the atmosphere. This shrouded the planet in darkness and caused a global winter, killing off many species that couldn't adapt to this hellish environment."

Dr Gareth Collins, Natural Environment Research Council Fellow and another co-author from the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, added: "The asteroid was about the size of the Isle of Wight and hit Earth 20 times faster than a speeding bullet. The explosion of hot rock and gas would have looked like a huge ball of fire on the horizon, grilling any living creature in the immediate vicinity that couldn't find shelter. Ironically, while this hellish day signalled the end of the 160 million year reign of the dinosaurs, it turned out to be a great day for mammals, who had lived in the shadow of the dinosaurs prior to this event. The KT extinction was a pivotal moment in Earth's history, which ultimately paved the way for humans to become the dominant species on Earth."

In the review, the panel sifted through past studies to analyse the evidence that linked the asteroid impact and volcanic activity with the KT extinction. One key piece of evidence was the abundance of iridium in geological samples around the world from the time of the extinction. Iridium is very rare in Earth's crust and very common in asteroids. Immediately after the iridium layer, there is a dramatic decline in fossil abundance and species, indicating that the KT extinction followed very soon after the asteroid hit.

Another direct link between the asteroid impact and the extinction is evidence of 'shocked' quartz in geological records. Quartz is shocked when hit very quickly by a massive force and these minerals are only found at nuclear explosion sites and at meteorite impacts sites. The team say that an abundance of shocked quartz in rock layers all around the world at the KT boundary lends further weight to their conclusions that a massive meteorite impact happened at the time of the mass extinction.

The panel was able to discount previous studies that suggested that the Chicxulub impact occurred 300,000 years prior to the KT extinction. The researchers say that these studies had misinterpreted geological data that was gathered close to the Chicxulub impact site. This is because the rocks close to the impact zone underwent complex geological processes after the initial asteroid collision, which made it difficult to interpret the data correctly.

A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers say wooden remains they have discovered on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey are the remains of Noah's Ark.

The group claims that carbon dating proves the relics are 4,800 years old, meaning they date to around the same time the ark was said to be afloat. Mt. Ararat has long been suspected as the final resting place of the craft by evangelicals and literalists hoping to validate biblical stories.

Yeung Wing-Cheung, from the Noah's Ark Ministries International research team that made the discovery, said: "It's not 100 percent that it is Noah's Ark, but we think it is 99.9 percent that this is it."

There have been several reported discoveries of the remains of Noah's Ark over the years, most notably a find by archaeologist Ron Wyatt in 1987. At the time, the Turkish government officially declared a national park around his find, a boat-shaped object stretched across the mountains of Ararat.

WHATS NEW: This exact location in Turkey is not the same as the recently discovered wooden ice chamber in Turkey. April 26, 2010 news came of a "Noah's Ark" found. It's an interesting find. It's said to be located on Mt. Ararat inside a cave with a solid wooden wall, entombed within layers of glacial ice and volcanic rock. It has been preserved, samples taken, yet unknown the exact purpose of this chamber. The finders (Chinese and Turkish) are sure their site is very important, but more evidence and proof is needed as to what exactly it is. What was it's purpose and where did the wood come from? If this is true it's exciting to see this wood has been preserved. It could be another piece to what Ron discovered in 1970s. To give credit only to Ron is not exactly right as you'll see who first discovered this odd shape down below.

While routinely examining aerial photos of his country, a Turkish army captain suddenly gaped at a picture... There, on a mountain 20 miles south of Mt. Ararat, the biblical landfall of Noah's Ark, was a boat-shaped form about 500-515 feet long. The captain passed on the word. Soon an expedition including American scientists set out for the site.

At 7,000 feet, in the midst of crevasses and landslide debris, the explorers found a clear, grassy area shaped like a ship and rimmed with steep, packed-earth sides. Its dimensions are close to those given in Genesis: 'The length of the ark shall be 300 cubits, the breadth of it 50 cubits, and the height of it 30 cubits,' that is, 450x75x45 feet. A quick two-day survey was made. A scientist in the group says "a ship-like object that has almost unbroken symmetry."

India has finally got a symbol for the Rupee and joined a select club of countries whose currencies have an unique identity.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the design, which includes both the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' and has two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolise the equal to sign.

The new symbol, designed by Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, was approved by the cabinet today — reflecting that the Indian currency, backed by an over-trillion dollar economy, was finally making its presence felt on the international scene.

Kumar's entry was chosen from 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol. He will get an award of Rs 2.5 lakh.

"It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters — capital 'R' and Devanagri 'Ra' which represents rupaiah, to appeal to international and Indian audiences... My design is based on the tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between," a visibly-happy Kumar said.

"It's a big statement on the Indian currency... The symbol would lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and global face of the Indian economy," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

Though the symbol will not be printed or embossed on currency notes or coins, it would be included in the 'Unicode Standard' and major scripts of the world to ensure that it is easily displayed and printed in the electronic and print media.

Paul the Octopus - One of the stars of the 2010 World Cup has announced his shock retirement after a flawless tournament.

Paul the psychic octopus headed into well-deserved retirement Monday and will in future make children happy instead of footballers, say officials at his aquarium in Germany.

Paul (hatched January 2008) is a common octopus living in a tank at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, who is used as an animal oracle to predict the results of football matches, usually international matches in which Germany is playing. He came to worldwide attention with his accurate predictions in the 2010 World Cup.

He correctly predicted a win for Spain against the Netherlands in the World Cup final on 11 July by eating the mussel in the box with the Spanish flag on it.

BELIEVE it or not, the venue of the World Cup final has shifted from Johannesburg Soccer city to an aquarium in Oberhausen in western Germany, where a British-born octopus oracle called Paul lives. He has triumphed by correctly predicting the results of seven matches Germany have played so far. His predictions have thus been 100% (8/8) correct for the 2010 World Cup and 86% (12/14) correct overall.

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and surface vessels allegedly disappeared mysteriously.

The boundaries of the triangle cover the Straits of Florida, the Bahamas and the entire Caribbean island area and the Atlantic east to the Azores.

The area is one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the world, with ships crossing through it daily for ports in the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands.

Bermuda Triangle Major Events

Flight 19 was the first incident that was heavily reported on, bringing the Bermuda Triangle into the spotlight and under speculation. In 1945, Flight 19, a small aircraft containing 5 U.S. Navy bombers set out over the sea on a training mission. The plane was being flown by an experienced pilot, and for reasons unknown to this day, just vanished. Neither the plane, nor the crew aboard was ever found.

As eerie as Flight 19's disappearance was, it was just a prelude to whatever happened to a Douglas DC-3 aircraft that disappeared without a trace over the Atlantic on December 28, 1948. The aircraft vanished without a trace sometime during its flight from Puerto Rico to Miami. Inexplicably, no wreckage, or any of the 32 people onboard were ever found.

5. Spread of disease As northern countries warm, disease carrying insects migrate north, bringing plague and disease with them.

4. Warmer waters and more hurricanes As the temperature of oceans rises, so will the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes. We saw in this in 2004 and 2005.

3. Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves Although some areas of Earth will become wetter due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all glaciers melted today the seas would rise about 230 feet. Luckily, that’s not going to happen all in one go! But sea levels will rise.

Second, melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean, or in plain English - make it less salty. The desalinization of the gulf current will "screw up" ocean currents, which regulate temperatures. The stream shutdown or irregularity would cool the area around north-east America and Western Europe. Luckily, that will slow some of the other effects of global warming in that area!

Third, temperature rises and changing landscapes in the artic circle will endanger several species of animals. Only the most adaptable will survive.

Fourth, global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight, much of which is relected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector is the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth.

Causes of global warming
Climatologists (scientists who study climate) have analyzed the global warming that has occurred since the late 1800's. A majority of climatologists have concluded that human activities are responsible for most of the warming. Human activities contribute to global warming by enhancing Earth's natural greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect warms Earth's surface through a complex process involving sunlight, gases, and particles in the atmosphere. Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are known as greenhouse gases.

The main human activities that contribute to global warming are the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) and the clearing of land. Most of the burning occurs in automobiles, in factories, and in electric power plants that provide energy for houses and office buildings. The burning of fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, whose chemical formula is CO2. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that slows the escape of heat into space. Trees and other plants remove CO2 from the air during photosynthesis, the process they use to produce food. The clearing of land contributes to the buildup of CO2 by reducing the rate at which the gas is removed from the atmosphere or by the decomposition of dead vegetation.

A small number of scientists argue that the increase in greenhouse gases has not made a measurable difference in the temperature. They say that natural processes could have caused global warming. Those processes include increases in the energy emitted (given off) by the sun. But the vast majority of climatologists believe that increases in the sun's energy have contributed only slightly to recent warming.

The impact of global warming
Continued global warming could have many damaging effects. It might harm plants and animals that live in the sea. It could also force animals and plants on land to move to new habitats. Weather patterns could change, causing flooding, drought, and an increase in damaging storms. Global warming could melt enough polar ice to raise the sea level. In certain parts of the world, human disease could spread, and crop yields could decline.
Harm to ocean life

Through global warming, the surface waters of the oceans could become warmer, increasing the stress on ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. High water temperatures can cause a damaging process called coral bleaching. When corals bleach, they expel the algae that give them their color and nourishment. The corals turn white and, unless the water temperature cools, they die. Added warmth also helps spread diseases that affect sea creatures.

Changes of habitat
Widespread shifts might occur in the natural habitats of animals and plants. Many species would have difficulty surviving in the regions they now inhabit. For example, many flowering plants will not bloom without a sufficient period of winter cold. Weather damage

Rising sea level
Continued global warming might, over centuries, melt large amounts of ice from a vast sheet that covers most of West Antarctica. As a result, the sea level would rise throughout the world. Many coastal areas would experience flooding, erosion, a loss of wetlands, and an entry of seawater into freshwater areas. High sea levels would submerge some coastal cities, small island nations, and other inhabited regions.

Threats to human health
Tropical diseases, such as malaria and dengue, might spread to larger regions. Longer-lasting and more intense heat waves could cause more deaths and illnesses. Floods and droughts could increase hunger and malnutrition.

Changes in crop yields
Canada and parts of Russia might benefit from an increase in crop yields. But any increases in yields could be more than offset by decreases caused by drought and higher temperatures -- particularly if the amount of warming were more than a few degrees Celsius. Yields in the tropics might fall disastrously because temperatures there are already almost as high as many crop plants can tolerate.

Climatologists are studying ways to limit global warming. Two key methods would be (1) limiting CO2 emissions and (2) carbon sequestration -- either preventing carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere or removing CO2 already there.

The Vision EfficientDynamics Concept Car targets a top speed of 250km/hr (155mph), an important attribute in Germany, where all attempts to legally limit top highway speeds in the few remaining stretches of wide-open autobahn are continuously quashed. The 3 cylinder turbodiesel engine should sip only 3.7L/100km (almost 64 mpg) -- a completely achievable goal by a European car company, where a perfect storm of legal mandates and popular demand have long forced the automotive industry into leadership on fuel efficiency (at least, under official test conditions if not under M3 performance conditions). The two electric motors can be recharged by the engine as well as fully charged in about 2.5 hours plugged-in.
According to the BMW press release, the Vision promises:
Overall system output is 262 kW/356 hp, maximum torque 800 Newton-metres/590 lb-ft. All-wheel drive featuring an electric motor on both the front and rear axle.
Anticipated performance: Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, top speed 250 km/h (155 mph)
As a plug-in hybrid, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is able to cover the entire fuel consumption drive cycle under electric power alone. Taking the sources of energy used for generating the electric power consumed into account (EU electricity mix), this reduces the CO2 emission rating to just 50 grams per kilometer.
Electric power is generated without the slightest increase in fuel consumption through a particularly efficient concept of Brake Energy Regeneration. Energy is stored in 98 lithium polymer cells.
Aerodynamics developed with know-how from Formula 1. CX drag coefficient optimised to just 0.22. Forward-looking energy management uses the maximum potential available in each case to minimise fuel consumption.

SCIENTIFIC EXPERTS from around the world are predicting that 3 years from now, all life on Earth could well come to an end. Some are saying it'll be humans that would set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it'll be God himself who would press the stop button. The following are some likely arguments as to why the world would end by the year 2012.

Reason one: Mayan calendar
The first to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things -- building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins.
Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

Reason two: Sun storms
Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery. Our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the earth with lot of radiation energy. It's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012.

Reason three: The atom smasher
Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically, its a 27 km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

Reason four: The Bible says it
If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between good an evil, has been set for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese Book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

Reason five: Super volcano
Yellowstone National Park in United States is famous for its thermal springs and old faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple -- it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

Reason six: The physicists
This one's case of bog -- simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berkely University have been crunching the numbers. They've determined that the earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming that their calculations prove that we're all going to die, very soon. They are also saying that their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 per cent; and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

Reason seven: Earth's magnetic field
We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that shields us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call North and South have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so -- and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30 kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is under way, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

Courtesy Columbia Pictures. Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline.

Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.

Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?

A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could a phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?

A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence. "There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there..."- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientist

Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?

A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?

A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway. Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?

A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?

A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?

A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.
