Mum – Nancy (Laura Annie) Braggs

Nee McQuaigue - Born 14^th April 1913

Nancy was born in London – Lived in Lewisham and 77 Harrington Road, Sth Norwood and had 5 siblings:

Jack -- Fred – Roy – Mally – Stan

Father: John McQuaigue – Engineer – worked in Russia before the revolution. When the revolution started it was not a safe place to be so he booked a ticket on a ship home. The 1^st ship he was supposed to come back on was sunk so he arrived home safely on the 2^nd ship.

Mother: Laura Jubel Lewis

From Lewisham they moved to Deptford. Boats used to go under the bridge here.

Grandfather: ……….. McQuaigue - Born Castlebar, Northern Ireland, Moved to England and was a sergeant at South Norwood near Croydon.

Stories told by Mum:

I was quite a character in my younger days. One day my grandmother caught me doing cartwheels and showing my drawers, grandmother said I was a disgrace to the family. Father thought this amusing and no more was said.

One day at school, Elma was asked to keep an eye on the pupils while the teacher went to the office. Elma put my name down as talking. I did not talk and chased Elma home after school and “did her in on the front porch”

Later that night at dinner, dad asked me to pass the salt and pepper, I had had a bad day and told him to get it himself, he chased me up the stairs to give me a belting, mum yelled out “don’t you hurt her she has been in enough trouble today”

Another time with Elma (she lived next door) was always talking about how good she was at school. Mum asked why she was getting all the good marks, I answered that I got good marks too. A ball went over the fence and I asked if Elma if she could get the ball, she said no. I climbed the fence, got my foot caught and fell over, right on to the hothouse, I was not popular that day and dad had to come and get me out of the mess.

I decided after all this that I did not like any girl called Elma.

My first job was in a factory machining. Mum got me the job. I arrived home early one day, mum asking why was I home, I said I quit. I was fed up with the job and the light was bad.

I had another job in book binding, I liked this work, it was interesting.

My next job was at the Croydon Aerodrome, it is now wartime. Again the light was bad and I had a headache. I left early and my brother Roy came with me. The lady down the road called out when I was outside later in the day “you lucky bugger” asking her why she said that, itwas because the factory had been bombed later in the afternoon after I had left.

How lucky was I.

I cannot remember the year, but it was when the Crystal Palace burnt down. Bill, who lived across the road, knocked on our door and said, “quick, the Palace is on fire, jump on the handlebars and I will dink you down”. When we got there it was all ablaze, the two Princes were there watching and looking unhappy. The fire was started with underground gas.

I have now met your father. I was not really interested in Len at first but he was nice. We got married in 1935 on Boxing Day.

I found out later that the man across the road, a very good friend wanted to marry me, this is why he did not come to my wedding, his name was Bill Bines. It was a short while later that he and Len became friends.

I later got another job working for the railways. It was at Pearly station. I had to call the trains over the loud speaker and let everyone know where the next train would be stopping.

I worked with 3 men in the signal box. One of the men’s wives came to work to check me out, ha, ha. There was nothing going on.

Near the end of the war Len and I decided we did not want to live in England anymore. Both our parents had passed on and my siblings that I had looked after were now all grown and on their own. We decided in 1947 that we would go to Australia. We saved up our money, sold our house and most of our furniture and boarded the Strathaird in 1948.

We arrived in Melbourne and moved into a Nissan hut. Len found some land in Kinross Street, Moorabin. Len was a good builder, taught himself architecture and designed our first house.

After a few years, Len’s brother and sister in law moved out here, we sponsored them. Then another brother and his wife came over, they went on to Adelaide. Some years on again, my brothers, Fred and Stan and then Roy and his wife came over.

In 1952 Susanne was born and in 1954 Stephen was born. Len was restless and we both decided that we would like a more rural place to live, it was then that we bought Strathewen, 77 acres of land with two creeks running through, one was Chad's Creek and I cannot remember the other one. We sold Moorabbin and moved to Strathewen in late 1954. Len had built a hut for us to live in and was designing a house to build.

It was cosy using a couple of wardrobes as a room divider. One room for cooking and living in and the other to sleep in. It was here that I lost my wedding ring down the drain. Len dug and dug but we never found it.

Len worked away as a builder for the Education Department, he was gone from 7am till about 6pm and it was a little lonely. The neighbours were good to me. We met a lovely family who lived a few properties over from us, the Rankin's. We often walked over for dinner, taking Susanne and Stephen, Len often had to carry Stephen on his shoulders on the way home and we had the Tilley light to guide our way. The children enjoyed this way of life with Susanne starting at the primary school when she was 4. Not all day, I would drop her off when I walked down to the post office, one and half miles, to pick up mail and bread. We had our own cow now that I learnt to milk, her name was Judy. We then got another one, Daisy cow and a beautiful little red bull. The Rankin’s used to borrow our bull, they would walk over, and lead him back. You could put a halter on him and lead him anywhere. Len's heart was broken when he found him dead, he had got his head caught in a forked tree, we missed him dearly. As Susanne got older she started going to school on most days, often being picked up by the Rankin’s riding Rosie, a draught horse. We would meet them up the road by a big stump, I would lift her up on to the stump and Allan or Billy would lift her onto the horse. There would often be 4 or 5 riding her the rest of the way to school, 1 ½ miles, those were good days. Stephen used to grizzle and ask why he could not go, he used to want to walk but I learnt to take the pusher with me as he always got tired and I could not carry him. The McKimmie's sometimes got led to school on top of their dairy cow, sitting on sacks. The school was one room with all grades in here, the teacher was lovely.

I started getting lonely and had a couple of frights when some gypsies knocked on the door one day, I sent the kids outside and they hid under the bungalow, thankfully they did not stay long. We also had a couple of bushfires.

It was then that Len found a job through the education department looking for a caretaker at Mont Albert Central School. Len took us all to the interview and was contacted soon after that he had the job. This was 1958. We had to sell our cows before we moved, the truck arrived to pick them up but Judy laid on the ground with tears rolling down her face and would not go on the truck, this upset me dearly and we all started crying. Judy was just like a member of the family. I will never forget the day when she walked up behind Stephen and picked him up, she had horns like a hallo and she just stood there holding him in the air, I thought she had gone mad so I told Susanne to get into the house, Stephen was always a noisy boy, often yelling out all the time. Slowly Judy let him down and I took him into the house. I found out later that cows do not like noise, so this was why she did what she did. Stephen never talked much after that when we went down to the shed to milk, when he heard me calling Judy, Judy he would close his little trap.

Len had already started to build a house, it was nearly to lock up stage. We did not sell the farm but went back there on weekends. Mr. Robinson who lived over on the farm behind us had horses, the children used to go over to visit him and he let them ride the horses, I never knew for a while that they were doing this and found out later that he had bought the horses from a market and that they had never been ridden. Susanne and Stephen often brought friends up with them and they would all go over there to ride the horses. He had 500 acres and the horses had to be caught by my children before they could ride them, he never had them in a smaller paddock, so when he sold them they were well trained horses. They used to ride them all over the district. The children loved the farm and as they got older we had our own horses there for them to ride.

Time passes, the children are teenagers and we thought that they had lost interest in the farm and sold it, I did not know that it was a wrong decision but Susanne finally got back to the bush after many years of trying.

We stayed in Inglisby Road, Mont Albert for about 12 years. I do remember one birthday party, I had made a cake and I was telling everyone how I used to do handstands and cartwheels. I did a handstand in the kitchen, my wrist gave way and I fell sideways landing on the cake. It went flying but Mildred our dog at the time woofed in to clean it up. I laughed so much even though it hurt. So many stories but I cannot remember them all. We bought a house at 11 Ferris Street, Box Hill North to renovate. Len and I retired from Mont Albert Central and went into buying houses and doing them up, we enjoyed working together. From here we moved to Beaufort Road, Croydon West where we enjoyed living and having lovely neighbours, John and Val Caird. They were so good to us and I enjoyed their company. We had also bought a big house in St Kilda to do up and let out rooms. This was in Barkly Street, I wonder what it would be worth now. We started to frequent the auction rooms for carpet and other fittings. I went back to England 3 times, once with Stan for a holiday and 1n 1972 Len and I both went. Susanne and Stephen were both working at this time.

From here we moved around the corner to Edith Avenue. What a move it proved to be, we had our ute and trailer, Susanne had a panel van and trailer, Stephen had his vehicle and trailer and we had friends of theirs with a truck and trailer and others who I cannot remember.

The new neighbours were astounded and this is when Len got known as Steptoe. It was while we were living here that both my children got married in the year 1977.

Some years later it all became a bit too much with travelling to and fro to St Kilda and we decided to sell St Kilda and Croydon. This proved very difficult for Len as he had to part with everything that was in the shed and yard. I remember us loading the trailer up with more stuff and Susanne would ask dad in for a cuppa, while he was inside she would head off to the auction rooms to unload. We had to do this because when Sue (I call her Sue now as this is how she is know to everyone) and I came inside we would see Len taking things out and putting them back in the shed.

We moved to Albert Hill Rd, Lillydale, it was a lovely house but the neighbours weren't.

We stayed here till 1982, about 3 years. Sue took us for a drive to Rye one day for an outing, this is where we used to go for holidays when the children were younger. We looked at some estate agents as we were never out of the habit of doing that. We had an agent give us some address' to look at. We went back and asked if we could be shown through some and that day we bought 24 Monte Vista Court, Rye.

Stan moved in with us for a while. I now have my drivers license, I am not sure what the rest of the family thought about this, I was 72 when I got it, took a few shots at the tests too. I never told anyone about the little accidents that I had until years later. A couple of years on we bought a house in Bruce Street, Rye. This was to do up, well so father thought at the time. Sue lived there for a little over a year during which she had Len stay with her for a few months. Len was now showing signs of dementia and I was at my wits end so a holiday with Sue at the other house was to give me and Stan a break.

Father came home and it was only a short while later that he passed away from a stroke, this was 1985. I missed Len. I did another trip back to England with a friend a year later.

I have had a wonderful life, more ups than downs with the family but that is how it goes I suppose.

I especially loved times when Sue and Steve were at home and they had all their friends over too, they were good times with lots of laughter

I wish to thank you all for coming to celebrate my 100^th birthday, I have waited 100 years to get this letter from the Queen and now I have it.

I am happy that I have my family still with me and not to far away, except for that Susanne who lives where it is cold in winter and my nose would freeze. I did like it when I went to stay there though.

OMG!!! Well I know she will hang on because she is waiting for that privilege. I don’t know what stories you are looking at but what about the time she went to pat Daisybelle who was sleeping on my bed and she nearly took her hand off Daisybelle was your mum's dog………..! Now my memory is going………. Was it her or your dad that had a go at me for dismantling the carby on the armchair even though I/you had newspaper under it.

That amongst other snippets are my fondest memories especially when Steve and I spilt up.

Eva has remained a friend of the family since those days at Beaufort Rd, Croydon.

Being able to read her birthday cards at 96 without glasses…………. Bloody hell, no hope for me now. Can’t even see the TV without them……………..

Social Media in a small community

ACFE e-Showcase

This is the ppt presentation that I used in my showcase at the ACFE e-Showcase on Friday 22nd June, 2012 of my past year with the e-mentor project. I spoke of my achievements in Benambra and how I have community members now linked in to the Social Media World and what it means to them. It has now linked them to the outside world with different groups that I have formed. They communicate with local, regional, state, all over the country and the world beyond. People that have asked to join some groups are: family members, friends, people who have lived here or had a link to here and anyone interested in Benambra. It has united this community. I am very proud to have been a part of the e-Mentor Project with Junita Lyon and Leo leading us to the future. I have come a long way in the last couple of years and will continue to move ahead and keep our community linked to the world. I happy to announce that Kate Faithfull from Benambra Neighbourhood House will be joining us now in the e-future.

It has been a slow process with my blog:

cannot always be on the internet due to being totally reliant on solar power
weather interfering with the sattelite dish at times
my many varied volunteer roles around the district, sometimes I think I wonder where I am and what I am doing, but it is all good

Anyway it was nice to be interviewed and this is the link to my beginning back in 2007.

Nomination for East Gippsland Shire Australia Day Awards

I was so chuffed to be nominated for this award and I have been asked to log it in my blog. (good eulogy I suppose)
Members of my community got together to nominate me because of my volunteer work.
It goes like this:

I would like to nominate Sue Braggs as a receipient for the Australia Day Award.

Since moving to our community over 19 years ago Sue has immersed herself in the true Aussie spirit of helping your fellow mates.
She has an infectious laugh and a bubbly personality which draws people to her and because of this nature she has made an abundance of friends.
Sue is a true blue Aussie who is always giving of herself to help others in need regardless of their background and she does this on a daily basis without looking for accolades.
We would be hard pressed to find anyone who did not look up to her. With a heart of gold she has touched nearly everyone in our district in one way or another and now rightly deserves to have the recognition and praise she richly deserves.
We believe it is time for our area, particularly Benambra to say Thank You Sue for all her tireless work and efforts that she has given to our Community.
Listed below is a brief summary of the work and achievements that Sue has attained and been involved with:
BENAMBRA CFA (Secretary/Treasurer)
During the 2003 fires in the area and as a dedicated member of the CFA Sue played an integral part in the organising and assistance with CFA rosters and pending hours and days manning the Comms and note taking for the CFA Officers, despite her own home being threatened. Not only was she there for the CFA but she was there for her community - an ear and a shoulder to cry on. She continued this for weeks after the fire had passed with phone calls and home visits. Sue was instrumental in setting up the SUNDAY SIPPERS at the local store, where people could come together over a coffee and talk about their experiences with the fires. A good debriefing tool and Sunday Sippers continues to this day with thanks to Sue for it's inception.
EMBERS
A play put together by Campion Decent. He interviewed many people from the 03 fires and it was put into a play. Hothouse Theatre were going to do a show in Albury and Sue contacted them to see if we could get a showing over here. Funding was found and the play was put on in Omeo Hall. Through this the hall was able to be fitted with 3 phase power and all the locals were able to attend without having to travel far.
BENAMBRA NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE
Sue now volunteers at the House 2 to 3 days a week. Making herself available to teach anything from computers to photography. The House is linked with the East Gippsland Network of Neighbourhood Houses to which Sue was involved when she was Coordinator of the House. She is still involved and through this she does her e-learning, gaining knowledge on a variety of topics which she then feeds back to the cmmunity via learing days at the House or via the web site that she set up - A Facebook Groupfor the Benambra Neighbourhood House. She has acted as a mentor for students including recently mentoring a student for a Rotary Award.
BENAMBRA COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARTY
Each year with the Neighbourhood House Sue has helped to arrange the Community based Christmas party which is totally family focused and is growing in popularity, all thanks to Sue's efforts in obtaining Grants etc to enable the Community to come together in a fun filled day. Sue has been a big part of this since it first began, over 10 years ago now.
HISTORY OF BENAMBRA
Having a passion for for local history, Sue and her team of volunteers at the Neighbourhood House organised and spent weeks gathering data on the Pioneer families of the district. An entire weekend display was set up in the local Benambra Hall with photos and memorabilia of times gone by. A mammouth task and enjoyed by many who travelled far to see it. Sue also assisted Max Dyer in collaborating data for his books written on the local history and characters of the area.
BENAMBRA CLICK CLACK CLUB
Sue has a passion for photography and wanting to share her love of taking photos formed an informal group of photographers aptly named. Anyone with a camera can go on a group outing (to which she has organised) around the local area taking photos and enjoying each others company. This is well supported.
BENAMBRA ANGLING CLUB
As a dedicated member of the Angling Club for a number of years Sue has worked tirelessly to keep her club going. You will always find her behind the counter serving the delicious food.
INFORMATION CENTRE - OMEO
Sue was integral in the starting of this under the umbrella of her much loved Neighbourhood House. It is now well supported by the visitors to the area.
YOUTH GROUP
Through an unfortunate incident Sue saw the need for a group. This was followed up by some parents and a group was formed. A local family (Vince and Di Pendergast) donated the land next to the Neighbourhood House and it is now called Dejarlais Park, with many children accessing it. A meeting was held and Sue suggested that it run under the banner of the House. This has enabled funding to be applied to the group without them having to form an incorporation. This is well supported by The East Gippsland Shire who have put a lot into it.
HINNOMUNJIE RIDING CLUB
Sue was a founding member of this club, forming it and organising the incorporation. She does not ride now but is still seen on occasions sitting in a judges box with her stop watch in the jumps section at some of their events. It is now a very thriving club in its own rights, we must thank these poineers.
SCHOOL HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT
Along with the local store keeper, Sue has organised movie nights at the local hall to entertain children through the school holidays. She also holds craft days for the kids at the Neighbourhood House.
TAHNEE ORCHARD PINK BOOT APPEAL
On hearing the plight of a young mother being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease she immediately headed up a Fund Raising Appeal to assist the family and still leads that cause today, with some $16,000.00 having been raised. She also arranged for funding to have two reverse cycle heater/coolers to be put into Tahnees house. A cattle grid sits where the front gate used to be thanks to her and her merry band of volunteers.

These are just a few of Sue's numerous projects. Of course there are the numerous phone calls at all hours of the day and night, chatting in the street and her love of life and making people happy that makes her deserving of this award.

Heading down the iPad Road

Wow what a session on Heading down the ipad road. I have just recently received an ipad through funding at the Benambra Neighbourhood House, this will enable me to show my community what they are all about. We have also applied for funding to purchase 3 more for our students. I just could not beleive how many apps there are out there. I am going to try and get our ESL tutor to come in but she has sworn that she will not use facebook??? I will keep trying on this one as the apps for her use are so great and would benefit our international students. It would be a really fun way to learn the english language. My journey continues with not a day going by that I do not learn something. I wish I had mobile coverage where I live but this will never happen.
Anyway a big thank you to my ementors for without them I would not be where I am and the House would not be moving forward :-)

Well our year has passed us by very quickly. I have learnt so much and have been able to pass this on to my community.
I work mainly through facebook groups.
Benambra Neighbourhood House, ACFE ementor project, E-capability and the Australia Series.
What wonderful groups to get information from and to ask any questions relating to our e-learning journey.
When I find an interesting post that I think may suit someone/group I hit the share button and place it on the Benambra Neighbourhood House Group page.
I also run other groups, some secret. I chose the secret ones as this enables people who are a bit worried about this facebook stuff to have a play in there and noone else can see except for the group that they belong to. They are very happy to do this and it creates a confidence in them.
Blacboard Collaborate has been very busy this year with our online sessions learning these new web 2.00 tools. What a great bunch of people I have met there. We all share our ideas and are there to help each other.
The Gippsland Spruz and the Ace network ning are websites set up for you to find so much more information and what is happening online. You will find here date for online sessions too. Wow a great year and I am happy with my journey. A very Merry Christmas to you all and a Safe and Happy New Year. Looking forward to 2012

Well my elearning journey has done me proud. Today I was able to assist someone to go on Skype for a job interview.
I am so happy that I can sit on so many ellumiate/blackboard collaborate online sessions. These sessions have taught me so much and I have been able to head off and investigate the tools. These eleaders are always available through our community of practice for any assistance that we may need. Social media, Facebook groups, Ace Network Ning and Gippsland Spruz are all there for any help that is needed. I now have the confidence to help people in my small community. Being very much isolated, no buses, no taxi's, no trains, sattelite broadband and a drive of 2 hours plus to our nearest regional centre are all testing for us. Now with these web 2.0 tools we are able to communicate with the outside world.

Why Computers Sometimes Crash! by Dr. Seuss.

(Read this to yourself aloud - it's great!)

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.

When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Well, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you?

Quote from me: This is the best advice that I was given back in 2007.

When learning new web 2.0 tools on your computer....play...play...play and I will say this many times to anyone from my generation who feels they are unable. We are all able, some slower like myself and others that can just pick it up. Enjoy, learn, a new communication tool for those many miles away, sharing your dreams, your photos and your ideas in this now moving forward era.

We do not stop playing because we grow old;

This is our Neighbourhood House in the main street
of Benambra, opposite the General Store

Situated in the middle of town is the Benambra Neighbourhood House that is accessable by the whole community and visitors alike. We run Adult Community and Further Eduction classes. The House is funded by the Department of Human Services and ACFE. Since 2007 we are now on an elearning journey that is taking to the wonders of more web 2.0 tools. I have been helping people join facebook, skype, twitter and I generally can help with most new tools. As I have always professed, play with these apps and enjoy. If it does not suit we can always find another tool to suit your needs. It is amazing how many of our older community members are coming in to ask for help within the web 2.0 era that we are now in. I guess we are all consious of being left behind. This centre is a great backup for those who may get lost or confused, they call in and we can help them on their way again.

We run other classes and hold many activities. One activity that has taken off is the camera club, know as The Benambra Click Clack Club. I have helped club members join Facebook and become a member of the BCCClub Facebook Group.

We also have a general store which the community purchased in April 2006 and a pub of course(every small town has a pub) Benambra is a small community of approx 320 people within town and outlying areas . Beef, sheep, wool and timber farming are the main industries in this area. Benambra has some wonderful bush walking tracks and is famous for it's trout fishing.

Our nearest town is Omeo (20mins) and our nearest regional centre is Bairnsdale (2 hours)
It is a wonderful town to live in and visit.

It does not matter which part of Benambra you are in the views are spectacular. span>

I started using facebook back in 2009. I was only using it to find friends and put the odd photo up. I have since discovered many uses in facebook. I have found it a great resource as I live in a very remote part of Victoria and with fuel prices etc it has made making contact and keeping up with what is happening so much easier for me.
1. When neighbours are away and want their farm looked after I can take photos, put them into an album that I create for them and they will get a notification if I place a photo into it. I can also tag these photos so they get immediate notice. These of course can be kept just between myself and person/s intended. I have a couple of these private ones.
2. I manage some groups too:
a:/ the Benambra Neighbourhood House's group page, an open one to public. In this I can put links of interest up, advertise classes and outings and it is there for general comment from the public.
b:/ the Wild Dog forum group page. This is for general comment from the whole of the public. People can place photo's, links etc for discussion.
c:/ the Benambra Click Clack Club group page. This one is a closed secret group that only invited members can come into. This is where the Benambra Neighbourhood House's camera club discuss and put up photos. I am constantly putting up links of interest and advertising up and coming events. I also let our members know when and where we are having an outing and photo shoot. They are able to place their photos here for comment by the members only thus creating that nice private, safe and cozy place that we all need. As so many of us within the group all work at different times it makes it an easy way for contact as we just open it up when we have free time.
d:/ I also have a another high school secret group page too. This is great for us to keep in contact and what is happening all over the world.
e:/ I help manage a couple of others too.
Being a member of 16 groups keeps me up with what is happening:-
E-learning - this has opened up my life again and this blog. Here we join together in online sessions learning many new web 2.0 tools. These sessions are all managed via facebook. Links are posted for us to join into these classes.
So many great ideas for facebook and you can chose your own way of using it.
Please always be carefull and mindfull of the privacy and the privacy of others when in any social media program.

Well I have come to the end of a most wonderful journey. I have completed my 23 things, ye ha. Please do not forget to read up on the journey and listen to Helen Blowers talk on the 7 1/2 habits and our goals of learning 2.0. It has been fun and at times very frustrating. Broadband would be a much easier and quicker way. I myself am on satellite and we run on solar power so I have been constrained with what I can do. I know that I will continue to keep blogging as there is still so much more to learn. I may have a look at the 43 things site http://www.43things.com/things/view/1002411?new_entry=2270210 and see what challenges there might be there for me. For someone who said that she will never approach a computer I think I am now hooked. Enjoy your journeys' everyone. I did it the hard way and just had to check other things out for myself. The playing was so much fun and it is here that you can get totally carried away.
I am still not happy with the podcast that I have put on my blog so that is another challenge for me to smooth out. I will try another pod enginge. I will continue to re read my blog and go over what I have published and fine tune some of the things.
