Philippine Passport Renewal In No Time At DFA Megamall, No Need For Appointment

So my Philippine passport has been expired since 2012 but I have not given it much thought until my US-based sister who is out to go to the Philippines for a short vacation generously decided to give our whole family (well almost) an all-expense paid trip to Macau. At first it got me sad because I realized my expired passport will not allow me to be part of her treat.

My husband and I tried to set up an appointment for passport renewal online but it just made me sadder. I am sure folks who have tried to use that system will be able to understand. There are no open schedules unless we can wait for about two months. We even considered getting a schedule in DFA satellite offices in nearby provinces but then did not attempt since schedules there are full too.

Until I saw the exceptions in DFA passport appointment system which includes senior citizens and minors up to 7 years old. My mother and daughters fit this criterion so we all excitedly went to DFA Alimall in Cubao one morning to apply for passports (renewal for my 74-year old mom and first-time application for my 7-year old daughter).

I picked DFA Alimall since I heard that it was easy to apply for a passport here but I was disappointed. The security officer told us that only my mother will be allowed to apply for a passport since they do not prioritize giving the exception privileges to minors. Apparently, my daughter can only apply if accompanied by a parent is who is a valid passport holder. Since my passport is expired, it was out of the question. I am hoping they would allow me to renew at the same time so my daughter can have a passport but they would not. I questioned their rule because I read that other satellite offices allow it. Besides, they seem to make things difficult for a minor to apply for a passport.

When I mentioned it to the officer, she made me feel like it is really impossible for my daughter to apply for a passport without an appointment. They even asked me to go to DSWD to apply for a travel clearance for my daughter which will be another tedious and quite costly process.

I was losing hope when I thought of inquiring in DFA Megamall and was so surprised when the security officer told me that surely a minor below 7 is allowed to use the special lane as long as the child is accompanied by a parent (even if the parent has no valid passport). Apparently, the parent can renew or apply for a passport together with the minor. Thus no need to set an appointment for me too! I was so happy to hear what he said! I cannot believe that the officers in DFA Alimall did not even refer me to DFA Megamall if they cannot accommodate us. Well to be fair, they may be unaware that it is allowed in DFA Mega.

Anyway the passport processing in DFA Mega is smooth and fast! The officers are all very polite and efficient too. So this post will have a happy ending after all. My husband and I were able to renew our passports and our daughters are now passport holders as well.

Thanks to DFA Megamall for accommodating us! Kudos for great service! So parents of minors who immediately need to renew or apply for a passport and are also frustrated with the online appointment system. You may want to apply with your kids and try in DFA Mega.

Weekend Escapade in Tagaytay

To say that my husband and I (and even my eldest daughter) are busy the past weeks or months is an understatement. It seems we have been running here and there trying to fulfill duties that keep piling up. Well, to sum it up we really need a break. So I browsed group buying sites to search for hotel deals. Luckily, I found this deal which seems to be perfect – an overnight stay for 2 at Tagaytay Country Hotel, free 45-minute body scrub or body massage, dinner, and breakfast. All for less than 3thou and I can even bring my two daughters along!

We originally planned the getaway in time for our 7th wedding anniversary. But alas, hubby needs to work the weekend of our anniv date so we just scheduled our getaway for March. The sched we got seems ideal too because it is the weekend after Sophie’s 3rd trimester exam and right after knowing that I got promoted at work. So it feels like a reward time for all of us.

Well on the day itself, we all woke up early and were out of the house by 7:30 am. Our first stop is Jollibee for a hearty breakfast. After taming our grumbling tummies, we head on to Tagaytay. The weather was a bit hot but just right for a joyride. We reached Tagaytay proper a little past 10am. It’s still early so we decided to stop by Robinson’s Supermarket to buy snacks and drinks. After about an hour, we are ready for lunch. We want to eat at Eli’s since I read some pretty good reviews on the net but was disappointed to find it closed.

We had to find another resto that serves bulalo and found Diner's Cafe Original Bulalo. The place is not so crowded but I found the service a bit slow. I find the staff helpful and friendly as well. Good thing, we had a perfect view of Taal Volcano from our spot on the second floor.

The hot bulalo tastes good but maybe they can add more veggies in it. We also ordered sisig but maybe we should have ordered a veggie or a fish dish because i found the bulalo too fatty. Good thing, they serve free coffee on the resto.

After lunch, we are ready to go to the hotel.

Birthday Greetings and Mary Grace Cakes

My birthday month is about to end so I want to finish this blog post now. So what did I do for my birthday? Well first, I celebrated it a week in advance at the office. We had no task that day and nothing to do after lunch and while we are thinking of dessert, the idea to eat at Mary Grace came up. I am scheduled to treat them for my birthday so I relented when they asked if I can do it in advance.

I am not too fond of sweets but would not turn down an offer to eat at Mary Grace Cafe anytime. I love the warm rustic ambiance that is calming and soothing. The place is very charming with tiny flower vases out of mason jars, tea candles, and handwritten messages. They also play music from classic plays like Les Miserables that one of my officemates joked that we are actually in Paris.

Of course, the cakes are heavenly too. It is thick and rich and yummy, but not too sweet. We requested for water and the water they served has refreshing lemon slices which is perfect for sweets because it takes away the “umay” taste. The cake is a bit pricey though and the fee includes service charge but it is a good experience to eat here. I would definitely come back.

My husband and I badly need some rest and relaxation so I purchased two vouchers for 1-hour body scrub and massage in a group buying site.
Reservation is a must so hubby called right away but it was not so easy since the spa has full schedule on weekends. So I thought, if the place is always that jampacked, then their services might be good.

So on our scheduled date, we arrived at Earthly Senses Spa located along San Miguel Avenue in Ortigas, Pasig early. The girl at the reception welcomed us to inform that we availed the 30-minute body scrub and 30-minute massage but if we want to extend the massage to make it an hour, we only need to add P160. We considered it for a while but opted to decline since it doesn't sound worth it.

Anyway, this spa in Ortigas seems strict when it comes to reservations, yet we were accommodated about 15 minutes later than our supposed sched.

The therapist led us into the massage room which got me a bit bothered because they have no changing room. They did not give us any towel or robe too. It's great that I am with my husband, but what if I am with a casual friend -undressing may become awkward and uncomfortable. Another point- they don’t have a locker, a small cabinet, or perhaps even a small table where I can put my things.Sadly, my bag ended up on the floor. I also find the room too bright for comfort and the instrumental music on the background a bit distracting. I wish they would just turn it off.

I don’t want to sound too whiny here so I must say that generally, the scrub and massage went well although I think they put too little of that cream for me to feel lathered and fresh. Can I also say that I feel so exposed the entire session because while the therapist massages my arms for example, my other body parts are not covered with blanket. When my body was scrubbed with a wet towel, I felt cold because there was a ceiling fan. I also wish they made us shower first because scrubbing right away seems unsanitary. The sheets and the towels don’t look so clean too.

For good points, this spa center can boast of a good location and they do have that relaxing ambiance in the lobby. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt to scout other spa centers which can give better services.

It was early Friday and I just arrived from the office when I received a chat from a friend about this latest movie offering from Star Cinema . My former officemate who is a guy by the way is raving about how good the movie, That Thing Called Tadhana is. I believed him right away because prior to his feedback, I have been reading good reviews in Twitter, Facebook, and other online sites.

This movie that stars Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman tells the story of two heartbroken individuals who are struggling to be healed and move on. According to my officemate, it is at par with quality Japanese love stories. He also commends the great acting skills of the lead actors.

Naturally, his infectious enthusiasm got me so curious so I wanted to watch it ASAP.

Cool Private Pool in Antipolo 3B Resthouse

Our department in the office recently had a teambuilding and I can’t say that it was a good one. It was rushed, poorly planned, and so many opted not to join. Anyway, in spite of all that, we managed to have a good time and I believe the choice of venue contributed a lot.

We stayed at 3B Resthouse in Antipolo and I like this resort because it is perfect for family events. This resort in Antipolo has six private pools available for rent and each one has three floors that you are free to use for at least eleven hours I guess.

You will find the pool, karaoke, and dining area at the bottom floor. You can bring ready-to-eat food or opt to cook here since this floor is also equipped with a gas range and a grilling area. To get your money’s worth, I guess it’s better to cook here since gas is part of the bill.

The middle floor is where you will find the three bedrooms, two restrooms, and a lounge area. Each bedroom is also furnished with three beds. If you have programs or activities, you have a spacious function room on the top floor. This place is great for retreat or bonding activities because the place is quiet, relaxing, and in fairness it is clean.

For a few days now, the mood at the office has been very very relaxed. As in we have no tasks to do! Mind you, having nothing to do can be quite boring too but I am no way complaining. I know that when work comes, it sometimes pours, so I might as well enjoy these paid free days.

So I decided to try my hand at photo editing at pixlr.com and creating designs for stationery using MS Publisher which is indeed a very cool software. I had so much fun designing and finds it to be a very good stress reliever.

It’s been awhile since I posted something about what’s going on in my life here in this blog. It’s not because nothing special is happening. In fact, so many things have happened and I got caught up with too much work to do (again!) which leave me so so tired most pf the time.

I wish I can blog about all the things I have experienced in the past year but there are days (many actually) when I ‘d rather sleep than blog or maybe spend time with my little girls instead.

So now, as I attempt to make a blog post, I can’t help but think of another relaxation time. How about some bubble bath! Our house n Cavite needs a bigger bathroom and once we have the time and resources for a house improvement, I wish to have a bathtub where I can enjoy relaxing bubble bath.

This aromatherapy lavender bubble bath I saw online looks perfect to me because I love the lavender scent

Materials:

1 cup mild shampoo or dish soap

1/3 cup Liquid Glycerin
2 Tablespoons of Water

15 drops Lavender Essential Oil (or your oil of choice)

Instructions:

Mix the shampoo, glycerin, and water then add 10 – 15 drops of essential oil and mix again. Pour mixture into a bottle or jar that can close tightly. Shake well to mix then pour into the tub while the water is running.

Gone Girl Book Review Haunting and Creepy

I love reading and I have always been the type who gets engrossed and attached to the story and the characters. So much that I literally want to see them come to life or somehow meet them in the hallways. Many times, I would find myself rushing, reading as fast as I can because I can’t wait to know the ending. But then, when I am finally finished, I feel this weak sadness and sometimes longing that it is not yet the end, that there is something more.

The above perfectly describe what I felt when I read “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn.

I downloaded the e-book because of the blockbuster status of the movie which I simply refuse to watch it until I read the book.

The mystery novel started with the perfect hook, then gets my emotion to go up then down then up again making Gone Girl one of the most exciting and haunting and books I have read.

It seems that the sympathy I feel for the characters shifts as I flip the pages (or as I click the pages since it is an e-book). The first half, I feel so sorry for Amy then on the second half I began to pity Nick. Then I on whose side should I be because both have a reason to be

The book got me intrigued and amazed because of how it depicts marriage and a little sad because it is true that marriage can indeed get that ugly, you know transform someone into monster-like character.

I actually shared the story to my husband who discouraged me from further reading it saying it put bad ideas in my head (lol). A comment I once read about the book in an online review site said that it is one of those movies that make you feel lucky you are single.

This book deals with marriage and the complex characteristics of an individual and how sometimes (maybe most of time) things are never really what it seems. It deals with secrets and a lot on gender sensitive issues such as the roles that men and women play in marriage and how there is a need to control and dominate. Creepy and depressing is another way to describe it because it can clearly happen in real life.

Finally, Gone Girl is a must-read and a must-see because it is not one of those stories where you can easily foretell the ending. It is a welcome change from the usual stories we read and see owadays with same storyline and same conflict and utter lack of creativity. Now I can’t wait to see the movie!

Movie buffs like me who wish to catch international films for free should not miss the Cine Europa 17 that is happening from September 11-21, 2014 at Shangri-La Plaza’s Shang Cineplex at Edsa, Mandaluyong.

Based from experience, it is Free Admission but tickets are limited so one should be there at least an hour before the sched to get a movie pass to get ticket. They do not allow reservations or give out tickets hours before the screening time.

This year’s Cine Europa will feature 23 brilliant films from 17 countries. The synopses of the movies to be featured in this film festival are provided below.

Die andere Heimat is an exquisitely-shot black and white film chronicling the life of a young man and his dream of immigrating to South America. A poor but knowledge-hungry son of a blacksmith, the young man is joined in the film by his family, friends, and neighbors and offers a closer look at the societal dynamics in rural Germany.

Loss is the theme of two films, starting with A Second Childhood (Italy) which shows how a couple deals when one of them is discovered to have memory loss.

Bon Voyage (The Netherlands), meanwhile, examines the impending sense of loss experienced by a family whose patriarch is diagnosed to be seriously ill.

A different kind of family is at the core of Vegas (Norway), as three friends who find common ground take refuge in their friendship as they go through their respective journeys.

In Child’s Pose (Romania), an affluent woman uses her power to keep her son, who is charged with manslaughter, out of prison.

A kid’s occasional small-time hustles from a ski resort take a dangerous turn in Sister (Switzerland), when the kid partners with a British crook in an effort to provide for himself and his unreliable older sister.

Sean Ellis’ Metro Manila (United Kingdom) returns to Filipino screens as it features the story of Oscar Ramirez and his family, who leave their impoverished but simple life in the rice field regions north of the Philippines in search of fortune in the cruel streets of the city. The official British entry to the 2014 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, Metro Manila stars Jake Ramirez, John Arcilla, and Althea Vega.

Everybody Famous (Belgium), an amusing account of how a father devises a plan so his daughter, who lacks musical talent, can become the next big star.

There is also Czech Republic’s Identity Card, which tells of the adventures of four students growing up in communist Czechoslovakia and how their creative and independent souls make them a counterpoint to their country’s totalitarian conventions.

Hungary’s Thorn Castle, about the friendship of two boys who bond over the beauty of nature as they learn how to camp, hunt, and live off the land in the countryside.

Chinese Puzzle (France) offers a stark contrast as it takes place in New York where a man decides to move after his ex-wife brings their children there, following their divorce.

The film, which stars acclaimed French stars Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou, is the third film in director Cédric Klapisch’s Spanish Apartment trilogy.

Audiences will roar with laughter with Scialla! (Italy) when a melancholy professor discovers that the rebellious teenager he’s tutoring is actually his son.

The Netherlands’ Mister Twister – Class of Fun, about a young substitute teacher’s unique teaching antics. His style earns him the affection of his students but will a rule-obsessed principal keep him from being the cool one?

The Godmother (Romania) takes off when an American mother and wife, who has a brilliant teaching career in Bucharest, finds herself in the middle of a real gangster story after her husband is found out to be laundering money for a local mobster. The heroine forms her own family mafia to fight off her family’s enemies and gets help from unusual characters along the way.

In Ice Dragon (Sweden), an 11-year-old boy sets off on an adventure as he flees his alcoholic father and brother. A lovable tale that includes whales, fishing, friends, and first love, Ice Dragon was a well-received children’s film in its home country.

Also in the line-up is Denmark’s The Hunt, which is a stirring account of how one small lie changed a man’s life. The film was nominated in the 2014 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Lóve (Slovakia) promises to be a gripping action drama, as it reveals the tale of a man who is keen on shedding his criminal past in order to live a normal life with the woman he loves.

A gathering of Spain’s most stellar male actors, A Gun in Each Hand is a musical film that shows eight confused and perplexed men in their forties who have to deal with identity crisis.

Another Spanish film is the delightful animated feature The Missing Lynx, which follows a bunch of animals as they set off to save their fellows from being kidnapped and used in experiments.

Something sweet awaits film buffs in Two-Seater Rocket (Austria), which tells of Manuel’s great efforts to build best friend Mia’s childhood dream to win her heart.

The work of the world’s best researchers, oceanographers, and biologists commences with Planet Ocean (Switzerland), which vividly transports viewers to the deepest, most wondrous parts of the Earth, all in a call to respect The Blue Planet in which we live.

NBI Clearance Application Practical Tips

Okay so I need to apply for an NBI clearance as it is one of the pre-employment requirements in my new job. So I went to Mandaluyong City Hall at around 8am because NBI has a satellite office there. The last time I have to apply for an NBI was eons ago and I don’t remember it being such a stressful task so I was shocked to see the long lines when I arrived. Gosh, I actually thought I was early.

Since the line is super long, I decided to just go home and get my NBI in another satellite office, Robinsons Galleria the next day. While I am in the process of getting my NBI, I kind of felt sad for my fellow Filipinos. It’s depressing that obtaining a common pre-employment form can be such a burden. So to somehow help, I’ve come up with some tips for future NBI Clearance applicants:

Do a research about the NBI Office. It pays to ask around to know which NBI office delivers faster and greater service. For example, the NBI Satellite Office in Mandaluyong has don’t give out queue numbers and the system is a little unorganized.

Unlike in Robinsons Galleria where they have a separate line for online applicants and upon arriving, the guard will give you a number that indicates the time when you can return for the processing. This means that you can drop by early to get a number then just come back to line up.

Look for connections and other faster ways. There was a time when my mother needs an NBI form asap but she got a hit and the NBI people said that it will take at least about a week to get the clearance. We really can’t wait that long so we asked the help of a police officer who is a family friend and guess what; we got the form after a day.

Also in Rob Galle, the guards already give out numbers around 9 pm for NBI processing the next day. So if you have a friend who works there, you can actually ask that friend to get you a number.

Apply Online. I think it is a must to apply online- NBI Online. At least you do not have to line up just for the form and are assured that your application will be processed.

Be there early. As I said in other NBI offices, all applicants (online and walk-ins) are required to get a number and it is on a first-come first-served basis. I think in Rob Galle, the guards stop giving out numbers to walk-in applicants at around 12pm.

I actually applied online, was at Galleria at around 9 am and my number says that I can start lining up at around 1 pm. I was done by 3pm.

Be Patient. Yes, you need tons of these. Don’t expect that it will be fast and easy and yes expect to line up. You will line up for the form, to pay, for the biometrics, and gosh even for the releasing. Well, we are yet to see the day when Filipinos would get better services from the government.

Expect to get a hit. I think there is something new with the NBI system because I feel more people are actually getting hits nowadays. Some people who get no hits before (that includes me) are surprised because they suddenly have a hit.

Try to be productive. Well, it can be really boring and time consuming so it won’t hurt if you would bring a book or other things that will allow you to be productive even while lining up.

L’Écume des jours (Mood Indigo)

La Vénus à la fourrure (Venus in Fur)

Alone in a Paris theater after a long day of auditioning actresses for the lead role in his new play, writer-director Thomas complains on the phone about the poor caliber of talent he has seen. No actress has what it takes to play his lead female character - a woman who enters into an agreement with her male counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Thomas is about to leave the theater when actress Vanda bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic - and, it turns out, erotic - energy.

At first she seems to embody everything Thomas has been lamenting. She is pushy, foul-mouthed, desperate and ill-prepared - or so it seems. But when Thomas finally, reluctantly, agrees to let her try out for the part, he is stunned and captivated by her transformation. Not only is Vanda a perfect fit (even sharing the character’s name), but she apparently has researched the role exhaustively - down to buying props, reading source materials and learning every line by heart. Quai d’Orsay

Alexandre Taillard de Worms is tall, magnificent, a dashing man attractive to women and, incidentally, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the land of the Enlightenment: France. His silver mane and his robust athlete’s body are everywhere, from the United Nations tribunal in New York to the powder keg of Oubanga. Although the world doesn’t deserve France’s generosity of spirit, Taillard de Worms’ art feels cramped within the nation’s borders. Arthur Vlaminck, a young academic preparing his PhD, is hired by the minister. To put it plainly, he must write the great man’s speeches. But first he must learn how to deal with the prince’s moods and his entourage, forging a place between his cabinet director and advisers who haunt the Quai d’Orsay, where stress, ambition and underhand tactics are all part of operations. Just when he glimpses the world’s fate, he is threatened by the technocrats’ inertia.

The French, the festival also pays tribute to Filipino filmmaking on Independence Day on June 12 by screening three masterpieces that have had the honor of being screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival: Lino Brocka’s digitally-restored “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag,” Erik Matti’s “OTJ,” and Lav Diaz’ “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan.”

Tickets for the films will be on sale for a minimal price of P100 at the Greenbelt 3 cinemas.

Cool Disney Shows, etc. for Your Kiddos

TV shows can have such a huge influence on kids so I try to try limit the TV viewing time of my children. It can be pretty difficult actually as Sophie has lots of fave TV shows. It is a good thing that we have cable because she is able to watch good TV shows that are appropriate for her age . There just aren’t many good children’s shows in the local channels. These are just some of the good TV programs for children that I found. They are entertaining as well as teach good values and basic educational concepts.

Disney Shows

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Teaches problem-solving skills.

Hi-5. This is such a cool show and my daughter actually adores all the members who are all immensely talented in singing and dancing. Highly amusing, fun, educational and inspires my daughter to be creative.

Nickelodeon Shows

Dora the Explorer. Teaches problem-solving skills and makes my daughter really interested in the Spanish language.

Max and Ruby. These two bunnies are really adorable.
