Coffee Grounds May Filter Out Heavy Metals in Water

2016-10-28T23:46:00.001-07:00

Inside an old gas tank, pink and white mold grows atop crispy cakes of spent espresso.

Todd Broockerd, vice president of Kitten Coffee, a roaster and espresso bar in Brooklyn, dumps the grounds into a big, black bag and chucks that into a trash hauling bin. A putrid aroma — rotting cheese, with a hint of citrus — permeates the air.

Each year, coffee manufacturers, restaurants, cafes and home brewers worldwide produce about six billion tons of coffee waste like the cakes in Mr. Broockerd’s bin. If not rotting in a dump or fertilizing a garden, the grounds end up in animal feed and biofuels.

But researchers in Italy have found a new home for the stinky old coffee bits — by infusing them into a porous foam that removes heavy metals from polluted water, according to a study published this month in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering.

“We use a lot of coffee here in Italy,” said Despina Fragouli, the author of the study and a materials scientist at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. She and her team develop new compounds from agricultural waste — like turning cacao husks into a material for preserving and packaging food.

Naturally, they wondered “What about coffee?”

It turns out, coffee is made of chemical components that are really good at trapping heavy metals like mercury and lead, which are common water pollutants, and poisonous in high or sustained doses. Previously, other researchers used coffee as a powder to remove lead from drinking water, but getting the powder out afterward wasn’t easy.

By integrating coffee powder into a foam, Dr. Fragouli’s team is offering a possible solution, although the method has yet to be perfected for everyday, practical uses.

To manufacture the foam, they dried old espresso grounds from local bars into powder and mixed it with silicon and sugar. After the mixture solidified, they dipped it in water to dissolve the sugar, leaving behind holes to create the absorbent texture.

They dropped their little foam block in water containing lead and mercury and measured the metallic concentrations over time. For a water sample with metallic concentrations of 16 parts per million (which are 1,000 times greater than what the Environmental Protection Agency considers a threat in drinking water), a piece of foam the size of a postage stamp removed 99 percent of the metals from the water within 30 hours.

But the metals needed time to interact with the coffee, and the foam wasn’t as effective in moving water, removing only 67 percent of the metals. And at a certain point, absorption maxed out.

If this were to be used practically in the future, Dr. Fragouli said, the water would need to be moving very slowly through a super thick layer of foam, or contained in a large foam-lined tank for hours. She has been discussing the material both with Italian industries that produce metallic waste and those that generate coffee grounds.

Meanwhile, “Ours go into the trash unless the garden next door comes by and asks for them,” Mr. Broockerd said. “It’s interesting to me that something that smells so bad could act as a cleaning agent.”

Paralysis By Analysis; Problems with Decision Making

2016-10-28T07:20:00.002-07:00

Some of us are victims of 'paralysis by analysis' it's what happens when you think too much of a decision then you can't make one. Decision making is crucial to success, in fact, most successful people like Donald Trump and Tony Robbins preach the importance of quick decision making.
Generally there are two kinds people when it comes to decision making;

keywords;paralysis by analysis

Selective Type- They would spend hours in the store to find the best looking shoes. They would check all the shoes in the store if they could just to find that right one, they decide slow and bounce from one decision to another weighing the pros and cons of their decision. When they do buy the shoes, a lingering thought comes into their mind asking 'what if' they bought the other one.

Standard Type- these are the type of people who has a standard. They would go into a shoe store having a list of criteria in mind. It could be that their criteria is color and comfort. They would look for shoes that fit their want and when they do, they pay for it and leave. Never to dwell on the shoes they didn't pick.

Now take the analogy of buying shoes and expand it to let's say your career! You don't know what to do and weigh the cons and pros over and over, the problem is there's just too many choices that you can't make out which one is the best. until you exhaust yourself, thinking of the endless possibilities.

So try this, have a checklist of criteria and whichever matches your standards, GO for it!

Example; -Will it pay well?
-Will I like it?
-Will there be growth?
-Or whatever it is you want.

So ask yourself this when conflicted with choices "Does this choice meet my standards?" If so move forward with your decision and forget the rest. This will save you time, make you happier and make your decisions more rational.

Thanks for reading. Keep well. ;)

Living with ADHD in the Philippines

2016-10-26T11:00:00.002-07:00

I have ADHD. Growing up in a third world county(Philippines), with this condition without proper diagnosis and treatment was absolutely hard. School can be very hard too, as teacher's lack training to handle a student like me and often times resorted to humiliation , so I grew up traumatized. However., I've always been a stubborn guy, even as a young lad and I never let those experiences bring me down. No way, no how.

I was diagnosed with ADHD in college. It was when my professor was discussing ADD, that she completely described my personality. I told her about it and she had me took a test.

There are three types of ADHD;

1. Inattentive Presentation- having a hard time following instructions and attention to detail, are symptoms. Generally a person with Type 1 ADHD, tends to very forgetful and have a a hard time understanding something.
2. Hyperactive-Impulsive- someone who can't keep still, interrupting others and unfocused. Going from one thing to another.
3. Combination- Having both symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2. This is what I have.

As a third world country, issues like ADHD are not highlighted thus given very little support
by Philippine government if any. However, here are some things you can do to help your child.

1. No to sugar- Stop giving your child sugar, sugar will only make them more hyperactive. In addition, sugar can also trigger hormonal imbalance in the child's brain, giving them mood swings.

2.Read a book- Have them read a book. Reading and listening exercises focus, something a patient with ADHD need. However, remember that they should listen or read something that would captivate them.

3.Let them play-have them play outside where they can feel free. Having ADHD is strongly linked to the lack of neurotransmitters that interprets dopamine, since dopamine is essential to brain function such as judgement a child with ADHD needs a little more dopamine than non-ADHD children. So let them play.

4.Talk to a professional- these tips may help your child in the short term, however, consulting a professional is still the way to ensure your child's well being.

If the power od ADHD is harnessed it can be a great gift. Children with ADHD are often compassionate and have more energy than non-ADHD children.

1. Hyperfocus- Yup, we have the ability to focus on something that we like and block out all the other things. Given that something is interested.

2. Creativity- Our brain just won't stop working. We are just bombarded with it. We see things that other people don't see.

3.Risk takers- most people with ADHD have an amazing tolerance to risk.

I have ADHD and I'm doing just fine. I'm sure your child will be too with proper guidance.

Thank you for reading.

Manny Pacquiao vs Ippo Makunochi?

Question
Heheh you know Ippo from the Japanese anime..

Who do you think would win against these Asian dudes...
one is fictional of course but lets just role play.. So who?

Answers:

Ippo has a hard time in the Japanese ranks, where Pacquiao dominate the world of boxing in several weight classes. Ippo wouldn't last a single round with Pacquiao.

Other Filipino world champion boxers like Nonito Donaire and Donie Nyetes can beat Ippo in less than 3 rounds.

Answers:

no doubt Pacquiao will win. if Ippo was a real Japanese boxer he wouldn't be that strong. If Pacman was an Anime he'd beat Ippo by TKO in the 1st round, just right after the bell rings.

hatton, dela hoya, morales, barrera, and even doraemon can beat Ippo.

why do people get knocked out when they are punched

2012-05-02T19:55:00.001-07:00

Q. Why do people get knocked out when they are punched

A: Your brain is inside your skull like a box containing some breakable stuff.
When you get a good hit somewhere on your head, particiularly your jaw, your brain is shaking inside your skull, just like a ball in a pinball game.
Remember our box with breakables? Imagine what would happen to the stuff inside if you shaked it real hard. That's what's happening to your brain, your brain then tries to protect itself by shutting itself down thus knock out.

Which race has the ugliest female?

Q.Which race is the ugliest female?

A. I already answered this before,... "Beauty is determined by facial symmetry and according to the study conducted in Far Eastern University, South African Negroids are the least symmetrical, the study lasted for over 2 years with 1500 respondents. BUT it doesn't mean their the ugliest since the basis of "symmetry" used was made by Caucasians. And in a Westernized world that can be a bit biased." the answer is South African females BUT I say this again that's according to symmetry that Caucasians promulgated.

Abracadabra

2011-04-02T03:26:00.000-07:00

Where did the magic word abracadabra come from? One theory is that it came from the Greek alphabet abrasadabra (the c in the English was originally Greek and stands for s). Another theory is that it came from the Hebrew word: Ab (Father), Ben (Son), and Acadcsh (Holy Spirit)

In 2700 BC the first magic trick was recorded in Egypt, Dedi the first magician known decapitated a chickens head then putting back on resurrecting it. The king was so shocked by this he ordered the execution of the poor magician since the king thought it was black magic. There is also a dispute if Dedi ever made the first cup and balls trick since there was no evidence that there are cups and balls during that time

Trivia about love

2011-03-26T03:01:00.000-07:00

You must read this first- How to make someone fall with you. In psychology we have a term called "co-dependency" it is where a person has a feeling of "I can stand alone". If you like someone and you want that person to fall for you all you have to do is spend time with that person, without saying anything like "I love you". Just spend time together go to lunch with that person constantly have a conversation etc...nothing special. And after a month or two STOP. Then do it to someone else with your target knowing. I PROMISE YOU 9 times out of 10. That person will confuse "LOVE" from "Co-dependency" either way you will have that person.

Disclaimer: For men don't say like "you want to be friends" just be casual and polite.

Scientists estimated the time needed for a man to fall in love at first sight, and the time is exactly 8.2 seconds. The more a man looks at a woman the more fascinated he is.

Scientists say that if a man looks for only four seconds he might not be really impressed. However, if the gaze rests on a woman for 8.2 seconds or more than he might fall in love.

Bu the same finding could not be applied to women. Looking at a man for more than 8.2 seconds doesn't always mean that a woman is interested.

Researchers installed hidden cameras to spy on the eye movement of 115 students while they were involved in conversation with actors and actresses. Later, these students were asked to rate the level of attractiveness of their chatting partners.

The average look of a man into the eyes of actresses, before they started considering them beautiful, is 8.2 seconds, reports the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. At the same time it took 4.5 seconds to for men to find a woman less attractive.

Scientists consider that men use eye contact to try to find fit and fertile partners. Women, however, are more cautious about drawing unwanted attention due to the risks of unwanted pregnancy and single parenthood.

Trivia about love

When in love these hormones are responsible for the feeling. Not magic

Dopamine- this gives you the same feeling as cocaine, which is very addictive. Every time you see the love of you life you ussually get a shot of this. Trivia about cakes and candles

2011-03-19T05:47:00.000-07:00

Who began the practice about candles and cakes? Well the ancient Greeks did, when they celebrated the birthday of their moon goddess Artemis, with moon-shaped honey cakes surrounded by lighted candles. Candles signified moonlight, the goddess's earthward radiance. However blowing the candles for a wish was a practice rooted back into medieval German celebration called Kindersfeste, held specifically for children. The total numbers of candles was the age of the child plus one. The extra one represents the "light of life".

Check this out: Saying "birthday celebrant" is incorrect. The word celebrant is strictly used for those who participate in religious ceremony such as mass. Anyone who celebrates his birthday, anniversary and other festive occasion is properly called a celebrator.

Bodhi: The Buddhist term for enlightenment, the spiritual awakening all Buddhist strive for.

King Kong Power

2011-03-13T00:39:00.000-08:00

What kind of Gorilla is King Kong? Well he is a pre-historic ape and is a fictional character but Kong is based on the silverback gorilla. He might be a monster on screen but in reality gorilla's are shy, withdrawn, moody animals that would typically avoid physical confrontations. It will only rush an intruder if it feels threatened or cornered. Despite their size and power they are relatively peaceable animals. There are few incident that they would rush a human being and no cases of them crushing a man to death. Please keep reading..despite this fact silveback gorillas over 1.8 meter (5'11) with the weight 230kg (510lbs) tends to be more aggressive. I guess that's why if there was a real King Kong he would be really aggressive since he is 50feet tall.

Cat Whiskers For

2011-03-05T22:36:00.000-08:00

What are the cats whiskers for? They are actually organs of sense. When something touches the tip of a cat's whisker, sensitive nerve endings at its base are actually stimulated, allowing the cat to feel things several inches away from its space. The whiskers are specially helpful in giving the cat a "feel" if a space is too small to squeeze through.

Cats, like people, are either right handed or left-handed- that is, they favor either their right or left paws. However, cats do not have the ability to taste sweet.

Check this out. A man named Sir Henry Wyat was sentenced to the Tower of London, at a time when prisoners generally starved to death. Sir Henry's kitty seemed to understand the situation because she snuck into the Tower, bringing him a freshly-killed pigeon, every day. When the king heard of this, he must have felt sad for the kitty, because he immediately set Sir Henry free.
