Old Meets New in this Modern Bath

Built in 1958, this Colonial home had the space and many of the features this young professional couple desired; however as in many homes from the same time period, the master bathroom was dated and small.

In viewing the space of the second floor and the master bedroom, KBDC Design Associate Kate Yurgelun, felt that the existing bathroom could be enlarged by taking over an adjoining closet space. Incorporating classic materials such as bright white wall tile combined with period looking hexagon floor tile similar to that used in other baths of the residence, Kate was able to give this space an ageless feel that blends easily with the home’s style.

The cabinets were kept simple, a painted Maple finish in Arctic White, with Quartz countertops, shower seat and threshold. Heated flooring, brushed nickel fixtures including a handheld shower head and slide bar bring this master bath up to 21st century standards. By taking over the closet area Kate was able to give this couple the beautiful shower space they desired. Rounding out the room is a pair of oil rubbed bronze light fixtures and barn doors that warm up the otherwise white space with old world charm.

A Dog's Kitchen; Behind the Scenes Concept Drawings

As part of our in-depth design process, we like to help our clients visualize what their new space could look like using 3D drawings, and I thought it would be interesting for you to see concept drawings of projects we're working on. In the next few posts we will show you some of these "behind the scenes" drawings.

In this first "behind the scenes" post are drawings of a kitchen designed for a couple who have a pair of really BIG dogs whose food/watering needs they wanted incorporated into the design. A dog owner myself, I love it when I get to design something for my four legged friends.

This is a small kitchen, so it is important to make use of every inch of space, especially given the request to accommodate their dogs. Utilizing the space under the window, we created a small console table with a surprise hidden inside...feeding bowls are stored inside the "drawer".

Here is an overhead view of the kitchen. The original, existing space is closed off from the dining room, and very segmented. We have proposed removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and also opening up the doorway that leads from the dining room to the family room for a greater sense of openness. Rather than an island, for which there is not enough space, we utilize a peninsula that can seat three.

This view shows the space looking into the kitchen from the dining room. Using a combination of open shelving and various sized cabinetry, we create a cohesive and unified look that adds interest as well as storage.

Here is one way we chose to address the peninsula, adding cubbies that could be used for wine bottles, water bottles or other items. We have seating on one side and a work station on the other.

Here come the dogs! Ready for their meal, the two can easily eat together side by side. When not in use, the drawer can be closed and dishes hidden from view. An older home, we proposed using period style light fixtures and kept with a simpler door style, cup pulls and vintage style cabinet latches. Bon appetite! Woof

Our kitchen themed tree being donated

celebration coming up in December.

We're getting into the holiday spirit here at Kitchen & Bath Design + Construction. Participating in a Festival of Trees through one of the local churches in our community, we put together this cute little tree. Thinking outside the box, our tree features kitchen themed (of course) and traditional ornaments along with a few cookie cutters, like the angel cutter on the top. We are calling it "Kitchen Bling and Thingamajigs" and I really had fun putting it together. The tag line for the company is "it all falls into place..."and this tree certainly did. I will be decorating another smaller one for the showroom and am looking forward to that along with holiday baking, music, friends and all the get togethers that come with this time of year. I am so grateful for the many people who have come into my life, both as clients and as friends. Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving.

A Master Bath Redo Fit for a Queen or King

Built in 1999, this spacious home has many beautiful features. The original master bathroom was dominated by a large soaking tub with a tub deck, his and hers vanities, separate water closet and high tray ceiling. The current homeowners were concerned however with a discoloration of the tile around the shower and felt a need to create a space that better reflected their style.

They came to Kitchen & Bath Design + Construction desiring a lighter and airier look, well as addressing any underlying moisture issues. Our task was to determine and remedy the moisture problem and create a functional and beautiful space that matched the rest of this stately colonial home.

The client wanted to replace the built in tub with a free standing one that could become the focal point of the room. We chose an oval shaped acrylic tub paired with a floor mounted tub filler for traditional flair and elegance.

Painted cabinetry in a Shaker style bring a quiet stateliness, while crystal knobs add a touch of bling. To keep with the soft tones, we chose a large sized porcelain tile for the floor in a color called Linen, using the same tile on the shower walls. His and Hers vanities are topped by a lighter colored granite swirled with hues of cream, brown, and gray. Robe hooks on the tall cabinets near tub make for a quick grab of a towel and a rain shower head in the new glass shower enclosure makes for a truly invigorating shower.

Earlier this year we posted a blog on kitchen & bath trends following our Project Manager's trip to the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS). We have been on a photography spree lately having professional pictures taken of recently completed projects and wanted to share with you five more examples of trends in design for the year.

1. Gray is in. This trend actually hit the streets in 2014, but it has been gaining ground. We've had a number of clients looking to use gray in their kitchen or bath design. Gray is one of those colors that is flexible and can be combined with a myriad of accent colors-great for use as the canvas in a room where pillows, towels, dishware and other accessories can be changed out with the seasons or personal taste.

2. Functionality and max kitchen storage. With so many gadgets and gizmo's out there for the cooking enthusiast, it makes sense that people want to maximize the storage space they have in the kitchen. Clients are also requesting added functionality so that time spent in their new kitchen is as pleasant as possible. Who doesn't know the feeling of looking for the right bowl or storage container that is buried in a jumbled mess at the back of a base cabinet you literally have to crawl into to find? To that end, pullouts and rollouts, drawers and lazy Susan's are becoming the go-to's for cabinets, pulldown faucet heads, flip up cabinet doors, hands free and touchless fixtures are among the other additions being built into a kitchen and bath design to maximize functionality.

3. Look alikes. While granite is the ever popular countertop choice, laminates are coming back in favor. Gone is the avocado green of the 1970's. Manufacturers like Formica are coming out with some great granite look alike choices without the look alike cost.

4. New Quartz colors. If you hadn't heard, Pantone's color of the year for 2015 is Marsala, an earthy red. While a recent kitchen project didn't use this particular hue, we did use red in the countertops, a Quartz called Red Jewel. Quartz is available in material created to represent natural stone like Carrara Marble, soothing earth tones and vibrant neon colors. for this project, we were lucky enough to have a client who welcomed and requested something so bold as red. 5. Simple, clean lines. Homeowners are opting for a more contemporary look with cleaner lines, less detail, open shelving and sleek European style cabinets. With our lives becoming more and more hectic, our homes are needing to work with us rather than against us. Between multiple electronic devices and more and more visual information, being on the go with work, school and recreational activities, people are opting for simplicity and open sight lines, getting away from elaborate, decorative cabinetry and the visual overload of cluttered countertops.

For Third Year, Kitchen & Bath Design + Construction Participates in Hartford Habitat's Women Build Program

As the female business owner of a construction firm in a predominantly male field, I have a passion for helping women become empowered. In keeping with this, for the third year I joined forces earlier in May with other humanitarian minded women to participate on a Women Build event for Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity. If you haven't heard about Women Build, it is a nationwide program of Habitat for Humanity, held each May the week before Mother’s day. The program’s aim is to bring together women from all walks of life to gain construction skills and to work on a Habitat project in their local area which raises money and awareness of the housing crisis that exists for women and children here in Connecticut as well as across the country and worldwide.

With a team of 10 women made up of friends and KBDC clients, we partnered with Hartford Area Habitat, construction professionals, and another team to hang sheetrock at a project on Enfield Street in Hartford on Saturday, May 9^th, 2015. Together, Team KBDC raised over $1,000.00 for the program. We shared a great day with some terrific people working to make a difference in another person's life and community. We Love Pancakes! The Ultimate Pancake Recipe to Treat Mom on Mother's Day (or any day!)

Who doesn't love pancakes? Sometimes however they can be heavy. This recipe however sounded so yummy, (and not too difficult) that I had to share it with you. It's from America's Test Kitchen and uses ricotta cheese along with egg whites! I am thinking of making myself these treats this weekend. Try the recipe below and let me know how your pancakes turned out.

Makes twelve 4-inch pancakes; serves 3 to 4

An electric griddle set at 325 degrees can also be used to cook the pancakes. We prefer the flavor of whole-milk ricotta, but part-skim will work, too; avoid nonfat ricotta. Serve with honey, confectioners’ sugar, or a fruit topping.

Ingredients

2/3 cups (3 1/3 ounces) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 ounces (1 cup) whole-milk ricotta cheese
2 large eggs, separated, plus 2 large whites
1/3 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest plus 4 teaspoons juice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup (1 3/4 ounces) sugar
1 - 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

Instructions

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees. Spray wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil spray and place in oven. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt together in medium bowl and make well in center. Add ricotta, egg yolks, milk, lemon zest and juice, and vanilla and whisk until just combined. Gently stir in melted butter.
2. Using stand mixer fitted with whisk, whip egg whites on medium-low speed until foamy, about 1 minute. Increase speed to medium-high and whip whites to soft, billowy mounds, about 1 minute. Gradually add sugar and whip until glossy, soft peaks form, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer one-third of whipped egg whites to batter and whisk gently until mixture is lightened. Using rubber spatula, gently fold remaining egg whites into batter.
3. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Using paper towels, wipe out oil, leaving thin film on bottom and sides of pan. Using ¼-cup measure or 2-ounce ladle, portion batter into pan in 3 places, leaving 2 inches between portions. Gently spread each portion into 4-inch round. Cook until edges are set and first side is deep golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Using thin, wide spatula, flip pancakes and continue to cook until second side is golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes longer. Serve pancakes immediately or transfer to prepared wire rack in preheated oven. Repeat with remaining batter, using remaining oil as needed.

Smart Luxury Features for Your Kitchen or Bath

Creating a comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing kitchen or bath is essential when considering a renovation. So much of our time is spent in these rooms that making them special when remodeling makes sense both from a practical standpoint, but also from a financial one. What do we mean by "luxury"? Typically luxury is a "want" as opposed to a "need", and often luxury is seen as something opulent, and to many, unobtainable. In this instance, however, luxury refers to special touches in a kitchen or bath that create comfort, add functionality and increase our enjoyment of these spaces. Hands Free Faucet

Features like heated flooring and towel bars can make a new bath feel like a day at the spa. Who wouldn't like to step barefoot onto a warm bathroom floor instead of the standard cold tile. Not only are these little luxuries, but they can also serve as auxiliary heat sources for the bath.

For the kitchen, in cabinet lighting and accessories such as pull outs, rollouts, lazy Susan's and drawer organizers help make a kitchen efficient, providing a well designed and thought out space.

This year's Kitchen & Bath Industry
Show was held in Fabulous Las Vegas!

Our Project Manager recently attended KBIS, the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Going against the slogan, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” we’d like to share with you some of what she came back with. We'll be creating a series of posts, so without further adieu, read below for 5 design trends for the kitchen and bath.

1. Whether traditional, transitional, contemporary or somewhere in between, the colors currently trending for the kitchen and bath are whites, grays and browns. These colors are being used in cabinetry, tile, and flooring in a myriad of shades and materials. While red, and its many shades, is also making a splash in the home. Annually, Pantone, the market leader in communication color, tracks leading trends and names a color of the year. The Pantone 2015 color of the year is Marsala, and like the wine, it has a rich red hue that easily partners with the browns, greys and whites that are also trending.

2. Tile in “wall paper” type patterns like chevron, Moroccan and hound’s-tooth are featured in both bold and neutral colors. Used in backsplashes, on the floor or as decorative accents, and in materials
like ceramic, glass, metal or even cement, these tiles can add a dramatic effect in a kitchen or bath.

3. Rustic wood grains are making their mark like never before, and are being used throughout a room as today’s design aesthetic is returning to the colors and textures of nature. The look and texture of wood is being integrated into a variety of materials from vinyl to tile and is being used on the floor, walls, in the shower, on islands, and everyplace in between.

4. Transitional design, design featuring simpler lines than traditional, but not as basic or severe as contemporary, is also trending in kitchens and baths for 2015. This style is more relaxed with a family friendly focus.

5. Storage and organization is on everyone’s design wish list and there are many new accessories that can help keep a household in order. These feature everything from knife block and utensil organizers built into a base cabinet to bathroom cabinet caddy’s for hair brushes and blow dryers.

There were so many trends featured at this year’s design industry show, including a 5,900 square foot show house. Those discussed here are just a few that stood out and warranted a bit of discussion. Other trends that continue to gain popularity are freestanding tubs, freestanding seats in the shower, touch and touchless technology in toilets and plumbing fixtures and integrating energy saving elements into the home. There is much more to share, and we will in some other upcoming posts so stay tuned.

Happy New Year everyone! Break out the champagne-this year, 2015, marks our 25th anniversary of doing business in the greater Hartford area. I am so blessed to be able to do what I love, designing kitchens and baths, making a difference in people's homes and lives. I recently read an interesting, and somewhat surprising, statistic in Qualified Remodeler Magazine that roughly 13 percent of remodeling businesses close each year, and less than half never make it to a fifth anniversary. As a female owned and operated business in a male dominated field, heading into 25 years of service is even more significant. I credit some of this success to innovative design, but more importantly are strong connections to some remarkable people-clients, staff, subcontractors, family and friends. To help celebrate this milestone, we've expanded our showroom and conference area to include a new kitchen display highlighting some of the latest trends and cabinetry accessories, instituted a client thank you program and will offer value-added kitchen and bath seminars. I think 2015 will prove to be an exciting year for Kitchen + Bath Design + Construction. Making Memories: KBDC Wishes You a Happy Holiday And Offers A Cookie Recipe To Try

We do quite a few kitchen projects throughout the year, and it always brings me great joy to hear from a client how much they are enjoying their new space and how well the newly remodeled kitchen is working for them. At this time of year when so much of our holidays revolve around cooking and time spent in the kitchen, many memories are made as children and parents work together to bake those holiday breads, cookies and meals. To me, nothing says home and Christmas, like the smell of cookies baking in the oven. With this in mind, I would like to share a recipe from Cook's Country that recently made its way into my email inbox. It was first published in a 2009 issue of their magazine. It uses both Nutella and espresso powder and sounded delicious to me. I am looking forward to trying this recipe. Let me know if you whip up a batch with, or for, someone special in your life. I would love to hear.

Hazelnut Chewies, Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies

Nutella is a chocolate-hazelnut spread that can be found near the peanut butter in most grocery stores; you will need one 13-ounce jar for this recipe. These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days.

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups Nutella spread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
2 large eggs
1/3 cup milk
1 1/2 cups hazelnuts, toasted and chopped fine
1 cup confectioners' sugar

Instructions

Adjust oven racks to upper-middle and lower-middle positions and heat oven to 375 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in bowl. With electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat Nutella, butter, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add vanilla, espresso, and eggs and mix until incorporated. Reduce speed to low, add flour mixture and milk, and mix until just combined. Fold in ½ cup hazelnuts and refrigerate dough until firm, about 1 hour.

Place remaining hazelnuts in bowl. Add confectioners’ sugar to another bowl. One at a time, roll dough into 1-inch balls, roll in hazelnuts, then roll in confectioners’ sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake until set, about 8 minutes, switching and rotating sheets halfway through baking. Cool 5 minutes on sheets, then transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough.

Quartz vs Granite: Your Choice Will Be Based On A Number of Factors

People often come into our showroom in West Hartford and ask the question which is better for a countertop selection, granite or quartz? The answer is not cut and dried; rather it is based upon the characteristics of each material and personal preference.

The facts are simple, granite is 100% natural stone, mined from the earth in large slabs and cut down for stone fabricators. Quartz slabs, on the other hand, are manmade. Pure quartz stone is crushed and mixed with a binding agent then patterned in a factory. Because granite is totally natural, no two slabs will ever be exactly the same, a plus for those who like a “one of a kind” look, while quartz will have a uniform look and color consistency from piece to piece.

Granite has been a popular choice for many years because of its natural beauty and strength, as well as its cachet for being an upscale, high end material. Quartz has been catching up to granite in popularity over the last several years. The number of color choices available, as well as its consistency in look and performance features, have helped to contribute to this material’s increased use, particularly in contemporary and transitional design.

A nonporous and nonabsorbent material, Quartz won’t absorb odors, moisture or bacteria from food. Clean up is simple with mild soap and water, and quartz does not need to be sealed. Quartz may however, discolor over time, and it is not recommended for use outdoors or where there is over exposure to sunlight. Granite on the other hand will need to be resealed periodically-most recommend annually- and because it is natural, it can absorb odors, moisture and bacteria. Clean granite with mild soap and water and never use harsh chemicals or let acidic liquids such as citrus juices or wine sit on your granite for an extended period. These can damage the finish and/or stain the surface.

will vary somewhat from what is installed in your home), your installed countertop will not have a uniform look, which appeals to some who like the one of a kind nature of the stone. Quartz, because it is man made, will be uniform in color and appearance throughout the space which appeals to those who like a simpler aesthetic. Quartz manufacturers are coming out with new product that is designed to resemble natural stone, however nothing can replicate “Mother Nature”, so even in these there are repeating patterns.

Countertops of either granite or quartz can represent a significant portion of your kitchen remodeling budget. Costs for granite or quartz vary depending on a number of factors. These factors include color, pattern, thickness, the number of cutouts, how the cutouts are finished, the amount of finished edge and the edge detail, as well as, in the case of granite, availability of the material. Granite that is more abundant in the earth will cost less than granite that is in shorter supply. We caution people against trying to use a per square foot pricing formula for these materials. It is often inaccurate because it doesn't take into account the factors listed above.

So you see, the answer to this question-which is a better countertop choice, granite or quartz-is more than just which is better, and ultimately depends on the homeowner's performance criteria, aesthetic preference and budget.

I am so happy to let you know that we have expanded our showroom here at 13 Sedgwick Road, West Hartford, CT. to highlight some of the most current kitchen trends. The expansion is still in process, but trends on display will include open shelving, glass tile, LED lighting, and cabinet organization accessories.

These kitchen trends are also featured in a two part interactive seminar titled, Kitchen Planning Guidelines and Trends, I regularly offer through the adult continuing education program in the towns of West Hartford and Farmington. Through a case study format, as a seminar participant you can experience first-hand today’s popular cabinetry samples, stone, tile and flooring materials, as well as study images of kitchen projects which incorporate these and other trends.

New seminar classes will be offered in March 2015; however I am more than willing to offer this seminar outside of these continuing education programs if there is enough interest.

If you’re like most people, you tend to get a little complacent and used to seeing your “stuff” around you every day. You might even get used to the leaky kitchen faucet, the one knob that keeps falling off of your kitchen cabinet, (and that you keep putting back onto the stripped screw), or your cluttered countertops.

A Weeknight Roast Chicken Recipe

I love the smell of roasting chicken or turkey, and the resulting leftovers are just as delicious, but with my busy schedule, often keeping appointments with clients after hours, it is sometimes difficult to set aside the time during the week to roast a bird. When I came upon this recipe from Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen in my email, I got excited and had to try it. This recipe is quick, easy, and the chicken came out mouth wateringly moist. I used salt and pepper on the bird, as well as some other herbs like Tarragon. It was nice to be able to roast the chicken for 1/2 hour on a higher heat, then turn off the oven letting the heat in the oven cook the bird further. This allowed me time to prepare sides like a tossed salad and couscous without the worry of over cooking. I was even able to take my dog Clancy out for a short spin while the chicken rested. Perfect!

Weeknight Roast Chicken

Published September 1, 2011. From Cook's Illustrated.

Serves 4

We prefer to use a 3 1/2- to 4-pound chicken for this recipe. If roasting a larger bird, increase the time when the oven is on in step 2 to 35 to 40 minutes. Cooking the chicken in a preheated skillet will ensure that the breast and thigh meat finish cooking at the same time.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 (3 1/2- to 4-pound) whole chicken, giblets discarded
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 recipe pan sauce (optional) (see related recipes)

Instructions

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position, place 12-inch ovensafe skillet on rack, and heat oven to 450 degrees. Combine salt and pepper in bowl. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Rub entire surface with oil. Sprinkle evenly all over with salt mixture and rub in mixture with hands to coat evenly. Tie legs together with twine and tuck wing tips behind back.
2. Transfer chicken, breast side up, to preheated skillet in oven. Roast chicken until breasts register 120 degrees and thighs register 135 degrees, 25 to 35 minutes. Turn off oven and leave chicken in oven until breasts register 160 degrees and thighs register 175 degrees, 25 to 35 minutes.
3. Transfer chicken to carving board and let rest, uncovered, for 20 minutes. While chicken rests, prepare pan sauce, if using. Carve chicken and serve.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association has named October as National Kitchen and Bath month. As a design/build firm, where kitchens and baths are our bread and butter, every month is kitchen and bath month. But in keeping with the celebration, our popular kitchen and bathroom planning seminars have been scheduled through the continuing education departments of West Hartford and Farmington, and are filling up fast. We just held a Bathroom Planning seminar on Tuesday, September 30th and the two part kitchen seminar will be held on Tuesdays, October 14th and October 21st. Each seminar, held in our West Hartford, CT showroom on 13 Sedgwick Road, is a two hour exploration of the design process, design guidelines and trends for these often complicated projects. Participants enjoy learning about and seeing examples of materials as well as hearing about the remodeling process from me, a 30 year veteran of the kitchen and bath field. I enjoy leading these seminars and talking about my passion, designing kitchens and baths. It's a fun and interactive evening for everyone. America's Test Kitchen Recipe: Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

O.k., the weather is getting cooler, days are growing shorter, apples and pumpkins are coming into season. It's that time of year when we start to crave comfort food, the type of food that makes you think of home. What better way to experience comfort on a chilly morning than with a hot cup of coffee and a slab of this tasty treat, Cream Cheese Coffee Cake. Why this recipe works:

This brunch staple is fraught with pitfalls—from dry, bland cake to lackluster fillings that sink to the bottom as they cook. We wanted a rich, moist cake with a texture that could support a tangy swirl of cream cheese filling.

We assembled a batter of flour, granulated sugar, salt, butter, eggs, whole milk, and baking powder and settled on a straightforward creaming method: Beat softened butter with sugar, then add the eggs, milk, and dry ingredients. The resulting cake was full of flavor and capable of supporting our cheese filling—but it was also a bit dry. To add moisture, we replaced the milk with rich sour cream, added baking soda, and upped the amount of butter. Our cake now had a lush texture as well as subtle acidity—a perfect backdrop for the cheese filling.

For the filling, we settled on a base mixture of softened cream cheese and sugar and added lemon juice to cut the richness and a hint of vanilla extract for depth of flavor. To prevent graininess, we incorporated some of the cake batter into the cheese. The filling not only stayed creamy, but it fused to the cake during baking, eliminating gaps that had afflicted our earlier tests. For a topping, we decided upon a crisp yet delicate coating of sliced almonds, sugar, and lemon zest. As it baked, the topping formed a glistening, crackly crust on our now-perfect coffee cake.

Makes one 10-inch cake, serving 12 to 16

Leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator, covered tightly with plastic wrap. For optimal texture, allow the cake to return to room temperature before serving.

Ingredients

Lemon Sugar-Almond Topping
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons finely grated zest from 1 lemon
1/2 cup sliced almonds
Cake
2 1/4 cups (11 1/4 ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour
1 1/8 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/8 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon table salt
10 tablespoons (1 stick plus 2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened but still cool
1 cup plus 7 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon finely grated zest plus 4 teaspoons juice from 1 to 2 lemons
4 large eggs
5 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups sour cream
8 ounces cream cheese, softened

Instructions

1. FOR THE TOPPING: Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Stir together sugar and lemon zest in small bowl until combined and sugar is moistened. Stir in almonds; set aside.
2. FOR THE CAKE: Spray 10-inch tube pan with nonstick cooking spray. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in medium bowl; set aside. In stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat butter, 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, and lemon zest at medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes, scraping down sides and bottom of bowl with rubber spatula. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition, about 20 seconds, and scraping down beater and sides of bowl as necessary. Add 4 teaspoons vanilla and mix to combine. Reduce speed to low and add one-third flour mixture, followed by half of sour cream, mixing until incorporated after each addition, 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat, using half of remaining flour mixture and all of remaining sour cream. Scrape bowl and add remaining flour mixture; mix at low speed until batter is thoroughly combined, about 10 seconds. Remove bowl from mixer and fold batter once or twice with rubber spatula to incorporate any remaining flour.
3. Reserve 1¼ cups batter and set aside. Spoon remaining batter into prepared pan and smooth top. Return now-empty bowl to mixer and beat cream cheese, remaining 5 tablespoons sugar, lemon juice, and remaining teaspoon vanilla on medium speed until smooth and slightly lightened, about 1 minute. Add ¼ cup reserved batter and mix until incorporated. Spoon cheese filling mixture evenly over batter, keeping filling about 1 inch from edges of pan; smooth top. Spread remaining cup reserved batter over filling and smooth top. With butter knife or offset spatula, gently swirl filling into batter using figure-8 motion, being careful to not drag filling to bottom or edges of pan. Firmly tap pan on counter 2 or 3 times to dislodge any bubbles. Sprinkle lemon sugar-almond topping evenly over batter and gently press into batter to adhere.
4. Bake until top is golden and just firm, and long skewer inserted into cake comes out clean (skewer will be wet if inserted into cheese filling), 45 to 50 minutes. Remove pan from oven and firmly tap on counter 2 or 3 times (top of cake may sink slightly). Cool cake in pan on wire rack 1 hour. Gently invert cake onto rimmed baking sheet (cake will be topping-side down); remove tube pan, place wire rack on top of cake, and invert cake sugar-side up. Cool to room temperature, about 1½ hours. Cut into slices and serve.
