Cruise.co.uk claims market still ‘buoyant’

An online cruise travel agency claims the market is ‘weathering the storm’ despite the Costa Concordia tragedy.

Seamus Conlon, managing director cruise .co .uk, said: ‘Like everyone in the industry we’re truly shocked and saddened by the Costa Concordia accident last week but already our figures show that the accident is having little or no effect on bookings for the key brands.’

The agency said in a statement: ‘With 150,000 searches for deals this past week alone, including a high proportion for March departures, cruise seems to be weathering the storm.’

In the two weeks before the incident, visitors to www.cruise.co.uk were up on the previous year with 100,000 unique visitors, making 157,000 searches for cruise-based information.

In the seven days since the incident, there have been roughly the same number of hits, with searches for cruise ship videos up 150%, with more than 45,000 videos viewed.

The company has seen a significant increase in people who want to research Costa.

Conlon added: ‘Early January showed that P&O, Cunard and Royal Caribbean are still top with British browsers but we’ve also noticed that the interest in the luxury brands such as Seabourn, Holland America and Oceania has risen 100% over this time last year.

‘River cruising is up 50%, showing strong growth with more interest in both the specialist operators and the less well known destinations such as the Far East and Russia.’

However, another agency, IgluCruise, told The Sunday Times that new bookings had fallen since the disaster.

Richard Downs, of IgluCruise, told the ST that cruise lines ‘are keeping their heads down at the moment’.

However, the market needs to restore confidence, so he suspects there will be some ‘great offers’ in a couple of weeks’ time.

First Choice publishes report in support of all-inclusives

First Choice has commissioned a report to back up its decision to go all-inclusive in 2012.

Its Holiday Spending Survey, conducted in association with the Centre of Economic and Business Research, claims more than half of holidaymakers (57%) overspent whilst on holiday last year, costing UK consumers £403 million.

It also says overspending impacts the lives of over half of Brits (52%) when they return from non all-inclusive holidays.

One in four, it claims, have to cut back on things such as the weekly food bill (26%) and luxuries such as weekend socialising (28%) when home.

The research was carried out by Opinion Matters between 7 and 13 December 2011 based on a sample of 1106 UK adults who have been on holiday abroad.

Douglas McWilliams, chief executive of the Centre of Economic and Business Research, said: “The figure of £403 million is surprising, particularly when people want budget certainty these days. It seems it is the little extra things on holiday that sometimes we don’t even consider that really do add up and make a difference.”

According to the British Travel Association, 74% of Brits are considering an all-inclusive holiday this year and research by Mintel in 2010 claimed the all-inclusive holiday market grew by 32% between 2004 and 2009.

Hotel marketing organisation Best Western added a record 21 new member properties this year, almost double 2010’s intake.

The new members, with a combined rooms total of more than 1,200, take the Best Western portfolio over 280.

The group said its strong focus on increasing quality resulted in six of this year’s intake having four-star ratings, while membership of six others that failed to meet its standards has been terminated.

Director Keith Pope commented: ‘Best Western has invested considerably in the brand in the past 18 months with the launch of ‘Hotels with Personality’ and our latest three-tier brand enhancement: Best Western, Best Western Plus and Best Western Premier, giving customers more choice and clarity when booking, and easing the decision-making process.

‘These campaigns have had a positive impact on sales through our central reservations, which are up by 33% year-on-year.

‘Our increasing success at bringing in corporate and leisure business for member hotels, plus our other marketing activity, such as three TV advertising runs, the Hotels with Personality road show and a full website overhaul, have raised the brand’s profile with both consumers and hoteliers, all helping to attract quality new members to Best Western.’

All Best Western members continue to be independently owned and managed, while operating under the group’s banner.

It currently offers more than 15,495 three- and four-star rooms in Britain.

Holidays remain a basic necessity for the majority of Brits, according to the latest survey by YouGov.

Of the 2057 adults questioned, 65% of consumers said they are planning to take a holiday of five days or more in 2012, with the remaining 35% not planning any holidays.

This was exactly the same result as last year’s survey.

Of those planning to take a holiday, 49% plan to go abroad once or more, while 29% are planning to holiday in the UK once or more.

When asked to think about the current financial climate and how this will impact their holiday plans for next year Brits are largely cautious. The survey found:

- 26% agreed that they were concerned but still planning to take a holiday

- 18% indicated they were concerned and will wait until closer to the time to book their holiday

- 6% said they were not concerned and have already booked their holiday.

Tony Mooney, business development director at First Data Merchant Solutions, said: “Following Thomas Cook’s share price dip last month and the expected wider economic contraction in 2012 it is fair to say the travel industry is expecting sales to fall dramatically next year.

“However, Tui Travels profitability and the results of our consumer survey suggest it might not be that bad. Despite the ongoing austerity consumers are continuing to spend on the basics, for which the annual holiday remains included.”

ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer added: "Household budgets are feeling the pinch but for years we have seen that holidays are the last to be cut back in tough times.

“ABTA's own research has shown that people would rather cut back on eating out or home improvements than give their holiday the chop.

“When there is lots of doom and gloom in the economy, a holiday gives people something to look forward to. Destinations including Spain, Turkey and the USA look set to be popular with holiday makers in 2012 and we're also likely to see tourists returning to places like the Red Sea area in Egypt, and other parts of North Africa, where there are lots of high quality and good value holidays on offer

The answer is: I personally don’t know how they can afford to offer these deals, and to be honest, I don’t care.

The important thing is that they’re available and everybody may as well take advantage of it!

There’s an old adage stating that the more you pay, the better the quality. This may be true in terms of every day commodities, but it’s not necessarily true when it comes to holidays.

Not many people realise it, but sites like Groupon actually offer discount deals to popular holiday destinations around the world.

Sure, the destination you have in mind may not be available on that particular day, however, due to the way in which the deals work, your ideal holiday might be available the next day.

Even if it’s not, there are enough deals to choose from to take you away for a week in the sun, weekend on the slopes, a city break or a quiet retreat to the countryside.

Just looking around the site, I can see that this week you can stay for seven nights at a 4* resort in Koh Samui for just £246 – and that’s for two people! Ridiculous!

It’s not only good for exotic holidays, though. If you fancy a weekend away in England, just enter the site and look for
deals in Edinburgh (or wherever you want to go) and it will tell you what’s available in that city.

Failing that, there’s a link on the right side of the page, titled ‘Groupon Getaways’, that will list all of the holidays that are on offer that particular week.

I’m a bit of an evangelist when it comes to discount deals so please don’t mistake my enthusiasm as a sales pitch – but jebus, I don’t know why everybody isn’t doing this.

Cosmos to launch new regional flights

Cosmos Holidays and Avro Flights are to launch flights direct from Newcastle to Florida next summer.

Cosmos has already announced it will operate flights from Cardiff to Orlando, enabling it to offer 14-night packages from Wales.

The new regional flights are in addition to its existing summer services from Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow.

Departures from Newcastle will be available from May 29 to August 28, operated by a Monarch A330 aircraft.

Qatar adds capacity from Heathrow

Qatar Airways is to introduce a fifth daily flight from London to Doha from next March to provide extra seats in time for the Olympic Games.

The extra flight will leave Heathrow at 1600 hrs, arriving in Doha at 0050 hrs the following day. The return flight will depart Doha at 0635 hrs and arrive at Heathrow at 1200 hrs.
The service, beginning on March 25, will be on Qatar Airways' flagship Boeing 777.

Chief executive Akbar Al Baker said the additional capacity "reflected the growing importance of London to the airline’s international operations" and would also help meet demand for the London 2012 Olympics.

Agents have pledged their support for Thomas Cook as the company continues to hit the headlines over its financial troubles.

Advantage Travel Centres leisure director Julie Lobue-Said accused the media of over playing the situation and said she remained confident in selling Thomas Cook holidays.

"We have absolutely no concerns as to what we’re selling and are still recommending selling Thomas Cook products," she said.

She said Advantage was not concerned by the decision by insurance underwriter Northern & Western Insurance Company to temporarily suspend its supplier failure insurance on Thomas Cook flight-only and accommodation-only sales.

"This only applies to a small handful of our members who sell ATOL to ATOL. The vast majority of Thomas Cook products are ATOL protected," she said.

She said over-hyped media coverage of Thomas Cook's financial situation had further damaged the industry's reputation.

"Not in the trade press, but certainly in the consumer press they always want a horror story. It's not great for the industry, not for the economy and not for the consumer. It doesn't give the consumer any guidance," she said.

"We aleady have low consumer confidence and this will not help. As an industry we are used to deal with difficultities and it's a great shame that this has made the headlines."

IPP, the industry's other major insurance underwriter, has not withdrawn cover on Thomas Cook or Thomas Cook Airlines.

"Other Insurers may have overreacted to the recent press reports due to their lack of experience in the travel industry," said a spokesman.

TUI asks Greek hotels to sign new contracts

German tour operator Tui has asked hotels in Greece to sign new contracts allowing them to pay in local currency should Greece leave the eurozone.

A spokesman for the company confirmed it had written to hoteliers after the letter had been reported in German newspaper Bild.

In the letter, Tui said it was entitled to pay in whatever currency was in use if Greece leaves the Eurozone and starts using a new currency.

Bild quoted the latter as saying: "If the euro should no longer be the currency... Tui is entitled to pay the sum of money in the new currency. The exchange rate shall be made at the exchange rate set by the government."

Tui spokesman Robin Zimmermann confirmed the letter had been sent to hoteliers, saying: "As a responsible company, we should protect ourselves for a potential exit of Greece from the eurozone."

But Andreas Andreadis, president of the Greek Tourist Board, told Bild that Tui could not pressure hoteliers into signing such a contract and that no hotelier would agree to it.

Teletext Holidays to drop bulk of suppliers

Teletext Holidays confirmed today that it will slash the number of companies featured on its website by 70%, leaving it with only around 15 suppliers.

Managing director Victoria Sanders said the tender process would begin this week, which will lead to up to 35 suppliers being dropped.

Although Teletext has not confirmed which companies will be among the chosen few, it is believed to be focusing on mainstream package holidays, including cruises, rather than more specialist products.

In a statement issued this morning, Sanders said it made more commercial sense for Teletext to work with a smaller base of clients.

"It’s a case of less is more so we can focus on delivering high volumes of business for a core group of clients by working in a more focused way," she said.

"Working with fewer advertisers will not be diluting the range of holidays in any way. Consumers will continue to see all the great value mainstream holidays we are famous for and we will continue to invest in our online marketing to drive traffic online."

She said the changes, which will take place in January, will be part of the next phase of its business relaunch.

“We’ve made big changes over the last year to put new technology at the heart of the organisation so we continue to deliver business for our clients and remain front of mind for consumers.

“Our website is performing well with over 19m unique users performing nearly 100m holiday searches, we will launch a brand new app for iPad next week and we are now the only travel brand to have a presence on the new internet-connected Samsung Smart TVs.

“We have also invested in new brand marketing campaigns on television and in traditional and new media as well as SEO (search engine optimization) to make sure our brand has high consumer awareness and that is proving extremely effective.

“We are in a strong position but we need to move onto the next phase and build on success but reflect the difficult market we are operating in.”

Sanders said Teletext was in contact with all travel industry advertisers, including new and existing clients, to talk them through the changes to discuss different ways they can work together. "We will continue to offer advertising on the site and we have an active and highly targeted e-marketing strategy which we want partners to be involved with as we will look to expand our database," she added.

One in five parents cannot take enough time off work to have a holiday, claims new research from Thomson Holidays.

The research also reveals 49% of workers have not used their holiday allowance, while 72% are home late from work so cannot spend time with their children.

The research coincides with the publication of a new All Party Parliamentary Group report Giving Britain a Break, which studies the benefits of ‘social tourism’.

The report highlights that if the UK were to replicate the economic successes achieved in Europe, the Treasury could see a return of £1.50 in tax revenues for every £1 it invests in social tourism.

Definitions of social tourism vary, but the report found most organisations were in broad agreement over its purpose: to help disadvantaged people gain access to holiday or leisure time.

In response to its research findings, Thomson is creating a Family Charter to put ‘quality time back at the heart of the family’ at home and on holiday.

It is calling on parents and kids to identify the promises they should make to each other about spending time together.

A national vote will then create the top five rules for the official Family Charter.

The Charter will be developed with leading children’s champion Nicky Cox MBE, editor of award-winning children’s newspaper First News, which is read by more than a million UK children every week and their families.

Cox said: ‘The Thomson Family Charter will help us all ditch the distractions and dedicate more time to our families.’

TUI UK & Ireland will launch its biggest ever brand campaign for Thomson Holidays during this weekend’s X Factor.

The £5m campaign will see a 90-second advert played during the 6.20pm advertising slot of the X Factor this Saturday (22 October).

The advert will launch the operator’s turn-of-year campaign, which traditionally launches over the Christmas period when operators go head-to-head in a bid to corner the January peaks market.

The Thomson campaign is then due to run until May 2012.

The campaign seeks to push the message of ‘quality time’ and seeks to tap into viewers’ emotions by inviting them to ‘switch off, forget about time and focus on what really matters – spending time with the ones you care about most’.

Shot at a variety of Thomson resorts and accompanied by orchestral music, the advert depicts a young boy who says: ‘Time. So much to answer for. Never enough hours in the day. Not enough days in the week.

‘It’s time you put down your phone and held your loved one’s hand.

‘Those close to you; share with them a week or two and they’ll cherish it forever.’

Thomson’s head of marketing, Jeremy Ellis, said: ‘This campaign is the biggest and boldest Thomson has ever embarked on.

Ryanair will make space for six more seats on its aircraft by supplying just one onboard toilet, according to reports.

The Daily Mail says the airline wants to remove two out of its three toilets, meaning passengers will have access to only one lavatory.

It quotes chief executive, Michael O’Leary, as saying the move ‘would fundamentally lower air fares by about 5%’.

The Mail said: ‘Ever keen to cut costs and raise revenues, the budget airline has announced plans to remove two of the three lavatories from its planes – a move that it believes will allow space for up to six extra seats.

‘This could lead to the uncomfortable prospect of more than 200 people vying to get access to just one bathroom.’

It added: ‘Although some might consider the plan unpalatable, there is nothing to stop Ryanair going ahead with the scheme – as there is no legal stipulation stating that airlines must provide toilets on aircraft.

‘The airline's longest route route from a UK airport is its service to the Greek island of Rhodes, which takes four-and-a-half hours.

‘It would be relatively simple for the Dublin-based carrier to modify its fleet, as it has only one type of aircraft - the Boeing 737-800, which contains a maximum of 189 seats.’

O'Leary told the Independent: 'We're trying to push Boeing to re-certify the aircraft for six more seats, particularly for short-haul flights.’

Spain is the number-one family destination

Spain is the number-one family destination, but the UK is not far behind, according to the ABTA 2011 Consumer Trends Survey.

Details of the survey were released today, at the start of the Travel Convention, organised by ABTA, which takes place in Palma, Majorca.

Consumers were asked which country they regarded as the most family friendly for holidays and almost one in five voted for Spain.

The destination is most popular with the 35-44 year age group, with one in four 35-44 year olds being particularly keen on the country.

The UK came in at second place overall, especially popular among the older age group with those aged 55+ voting it their most family friendly destination.

The US came third, followed by France, Greece and Italy.

Turkey, Cyprus, Portugal and Australia make up the remainder of the top-ten.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said: ‘For many years Spain has been our favourite overseas holiday spot.

‘One of the main reasons for this has been the amazing welcome and facilities that Spain and its people offer to families.

‘All of the countries in the top 10 deserve our thanks and congratulations for the incredible holidays they have provided to British families for many years and will continue to for many more years to come.’

Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office, added: ‘We are delighted to see that even in tough times families continue to see Spain as their preferred holiday destination.

Brits opt for doing up the house, not holidays

Online sales figures for August show a huge jump in spending on homes and gardens, while travel rose just 3% year-on-year.

The latest results from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index reveal British shoppers spent £5.2bn online in August, up 14% on the year before - but a 6% fall on July.

The report said the ‘Home & Garden’ sector reported a strong year-on-year growth (40% up compared to August 2010) suggesting that ‘rather than purchasing expensive holidays, people stayed put this summer and invested in sprucing up the home’.

It added: ‘This is supported by the figures from the ‘Travel’ sector, which grew just 3% year-on-year in August – a stark contrast to the 14% growth reported in August 2010.’

The decline between July and August is a seasonal trend, and the results in August 2011 were much stronger than in preceding years – during the same period in 2010 and 2009, sales fell by 8% and 10% respectively, said the statement from IMRG and Capgemini.

Tina Spooner, chief information officer at IMRG, said: ‘As seen in recent months, the Index continues to show that consumer spending on higher-ticket purchases is slowing.

‘Although travel sales were up just 3% year-on-year, consumers who did purchase holidays and flights online in August spent on average 44% more than the same month last year.’

Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said: ‘August is a tough month for e-retail but this year saw a smaller decline thanks to the solid figures for retailers selling both online and in store.

‘However, it’s worth noting that with such a strong performance during the first half of 2011, it’s a big ask for e-retail sales to maintain such rapid growth.’

Online travel sales drop

Latest statistics show a general slowdown in online sales, with travel performing particularly badly.

The latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show that, although travel sales in July 2011 were up 15% month-on-month, they fell 1% compared to July 2010.

The total number of e-retail sales was £5.58bn in July 2011

Although this was a year-on-year growth of 11.5%, it was the lowest growth rate since January 2010.

Much of the slow down was blamed on the better weather, which encouraged consumers to do their shopping on the high street and in retail parks, as opposed to going online.

This led to a 2.5% month-on-month increase in sales on the high street for July.

Travel was also particularly affected by the collapse of Holidays 4U as well as a general decline in travel bookings this year, according to the research.

Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini, said: 'The slowdown in July shows the internet is not immune in tough times.

'Successful retailers will need to expand into multi-channel and continue to improve customer experience throughout the online shopping processes.

'Furthermore, with such a successful first half of 2011, it was a tall order for online sales to maintain such rapid growth.'

Tina Spooner, chief information officer at IMRG, added: 'While the Index performed ahead of expectation during the first six months of the year, a slowdown in e-retail growth during the second half was always going to be a possibility.

'Between July and December last year the Index recorded strong growth, with sales up 21% year-on-year, and therefore over the coming months sales may well be slower, having come from a stronger base last year.

'However, online retail continues to consistently deliver double-digit growth, despite the retail gloom on the high street.

‘With budgets being squeezed and disposable incomes shrinking, it is evident that consumers are making more considered purchases, especially on higher-ticket items, by researching across multiple online channels in order to make their money go further.'

Commission delay on Thomas Cook merger

A final ruling on Thomas Cook's proposed merger with the Co-operative Group will be delayed until October, despite being given a provisional go-ahead by the Competition Commission last week.

The Commission has announced that the deadline for the investigation has been put back to October 11, from August 16.

However, the Commission gave provisional clearance for the deal, which will create a chain of more than 1,200 high street agents, on July 21 and is not expected to change that ruling. The deadline for final submissions on the merger remains August 11.

"We have to give this proper consideration," said a Competition Commission spokesman. "Five days [between the deadline for final submissions and a decision] wasn't very long to do anything but publish the final report. We have to run a fair process.

"The provisional findings were published quite late compared with the normal schedule. Taking time to consider responses is going to take us past the original deadline."

The Commission could issue the ruling ahead of the new deadline, as the eight-week extension is only an option.

A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said she did not expect it to delay the completion of the deal, which is expected before the end of its current financial year, which ends in September.

Tour operators are pinning their hopes for summer 2011 bookings on a busy June.

The second live e-tid webtalk, which took place this morning, heard operators saying they were ‘optimistic’ that business would pick up this month.

Mike Greenacre, managing director of The Co-operative Travel Group, said: ‘Summer 2011 is performing marginally behind our break-even of last year.

‘The lates market is going to be more positive.

‘We think that if people are in a job and have got money in their pockets, they will book to go away.’

Nick Longman, distribution and customer director at Thomson and First Choice, said: ‘We are flat. We are relatively comfortable with where we are and we are optimistic for the month of June.

‘I’m fairly optimistic that we are going to have a good lates market.’

Domestic holidays are also selling late this year, according to Allan Lambert, head of retail sales at Bourne Leisure.

He said: ‘Late sales are probably 6% up year-on-year.’

However, he said customers are not trying to haggle for a bargain, which has been the case in previous years.

Greenacre and Longman said winter sales are down, mainly because of depressed demand for the Egypt and Tunisia markets.

However, bookings are already coming in for summer 2012, with The Co-operative Travel up 14% on summer 2011, primarily for short-haul.

TUI is seeing ‘lots of group bookings and family bookings', according to Longman.

However, moderator Michael East said industry experts, including Travel Counsellors chairman David Speakman and Advantage chief executive John McEwan, believed 2012 would be flat.

Spain still the most popular destination

Almost a quarter of adults say they travel less now than they did when they were children.

According to a survey by The Co-operative Travel, 93% say they wish they could travel more widely, although 23% say they travel less now than when they were growing up.

The Co-operative Travel’s analysis of 8.9m holiday bookings reveals that 61% of bookings are spread between the UK and four foreign countries: Spain, Greece, Turkey and the US.

Cost is given as the main reason for not travelling further, but The Co-operative Travel says this is not necessarily the case.

For example, the average seven-day holiday in the Lebanon, which is touted as a destination to watch, costs £577, similar to favourites such as Cyprus (£543) and Egypt (£645).

The same is true of long-haul destinations.

In The Co-operative Travel’s research, Brazil was named as one of the top places people wished they could visit (21% of those surveyed).

However, despite the average cost of a holiday to Brazil (£1,010) being 35% lower than one to Barbados (£1,568), it ranks 34 places behind it in the holiday league table.

Trevor Davis, director of retail distribution at The Co-operative Travel, said: ‘People want to be sure that their holiday will be a success and the easiest way to ensure that is to stick to familiar destinations.

‘However, with travel agents offering the widest ever choice, it is possible to get good face-to-face advice that might tempt your to try something new.

‘We also believe that cost is a factor, however often this is perception rather than reality.

‘What’s more likely to be holding these countries back is the failure of the mainstream holiday market to offer them as viable alternatives.

‘When you look at places like Turkey that have risen in popularity in recent years, they have done so hand-in-hand with a concerted marketing effort by major operators.

‘If travellers are saying that they wish to be more adventurous in their holiday choices, maybe the travel sector should be doing more to support them.’

The Co-operative Travel research shows that 29.05% of bookings are for Spain; 9.94% for Greece; 8% for Turkey and 5.99% for the US.

Fifth on the list is Egypt (4.89%), closely followed by Cyprus (4.14%).

Spanish Airport Stike

Airport staff at state-owned AENA, which runs Spain's biggest airports, have called 19 days of strikes, starting on 20 April and running through May, June and July, in protest at plans to sell off half of the company.

The strikes are due to start just before the Easter holiday weekend and could be hugely damaging for the destination, which has seen a resurgence in recent weeks, following civil unrest in rival destinations Tunisia and Egypt.

Airport staff say they are open to negotiations and there is still time to avert the disruption. However, operators and agents are preparing for the worst-case scenario.

A Thomson Airways spokesman said: ‘Thomson Airways is aware of the discussions currently taking place between Spanish handling agents and their employers.

‘It is important to note that these discussions are ongoing and the airline has received no confirmation from the Spanish authorities that the strikes will go ahead.

‘Thomson Airways holds customer service in the highest regard and, should any strikes be confirmed, the airline will do everything possible to minimise disruption on customer holidays.

‘A full and detailed contingency plan will be put into action if the airline receives confirmation that a strike will go ahead. Until this time, Thomson Airways continues to monitor the situation closely.’

Ryanair said it will have to cancel 300 flights over Easter if the strikes go ahead and its chief executive, Michael O’Leary, said the European Union needed to introduce measures to stop aviation workers striking.

ABTA said it hoped the strikes would be called off.

‘They are only potential and like most threatened strikes will probably not go ahead, so we don't foresee them impacting on bookings to Spain,’ said a spokesman.

‘But obviously a swift resolution of the issue is required to retain customer confidence in the destination.’

There are fears holidays to rival destinations, such as Portugal and Cyprus, will increase in price.

Jimmy Martin, leisure convener of the Scottish Passenger Agents' Association, said: ‘Spain has had a surge since the events in the Middle East and flights are filling with ease.

‘The strikes could mean the pendulum will move on to another destination.

‘Tunisia is back on, as is Sharm el Sheikh, but even with good pricing and extra value, people are not booking as regularly.

‘This will mean alternatives such as Portugal and Cyprus holiday prices will rise.’

Gayle Gordon, future SPAA convenor and senior consultant at Alba Travel in Inverness, said: ‘Clients looking for late deals over the Easter period may possibly request alternative destinations, but given the current unrest in other popular wintersun resorts, it is unlikely that they will be deterred by the prospect of the Spanish airport strikes.

‘As a result of this, tour operators may well increase their late deal prices to other destinations and this may affect the English market more as they have a lot more choice.

‘Passengers who have already booked their Easter breaks to Spain will still have to adhere to their original holiday plans or face hefty change fees.

‘However, the upside is, if the strikes do not go ahead and tour operators are left with surplus holidays to Spain due to clients choosing alternative destinations, then there may well be good deals out there.’

Its theme will be “the best holiday of your life” and will show a montage of people’s favourite holiday memories from across the decades.

The pay off line is: “We were there then and we're here now with a brand new website, Freeview channel and mobile apps. So that you can have the best holidays of your life.”

Pirates stalk cruise ship

Clients on a cruise to Zanzibar were ordered to lie low below decks after pirates were spotted casing the ship.
Passengers on the Spirit of Adventure, which is owned by the holding company that owns Saga Holidays, were enjoying dinner when they were asked to drop their knives and forks and file downstairs, heads bowed, in order not to get shot at.

Meanwhile the ship’s captain moved the ship to full speed to put clear water between his guests and their lawless pursuers.

One passenger told the Daily Telegraph: “It was a really terrifying ordeal. We were eating dinner and then ordered below deck with our heads bowed. The captain sped up and tried to outrun the pirates.

“Three days ago we had been given a lecture on what to do if a pirate ship bears down on use.”
As the ship outran the pirates, passengers returned to their dinners.

A Saga spokesman told Travelmole: “A small boat appeared on the long range radar which looked supicious. The vessel was shadowing Spirit so we put in place well-rehearsed procedures and alerted the naval authorities."

"Dinner was interrupted and the whole episode lasted about 53 minutes. Now people have something to talk about on their postcards. It was a very British experience."

He added: "The soup may have got cold for a while but we heated it back up again."

TripAdvisor has launched an integration with Facebook that instantly personalises the Expedia-owned reviews site for each user.

The move means that when visitors go to TripAdvisor.com while logged into Facebook, they will first see the activities their friends have shared, helping them to make more informed decisions when planning their own trips.

There are three levels of ‘travel inspiration’ within the integration.

First, users can see a map on the homepage revealing where their friends have been, to inspire them to visit a new destination.

Secondly, they can visit a destination's tourism page on TripAdvisor to uncover all of the comments written by people that they know.

Finally, if users are researching a particular hotel, restaurant or attraction, they will first see reviews written by their friends about that place.

Steve Kaufer, TripAdvisor founder and chief executive, said: ‘More than half of TripAdvisor users have a Facebook account, and we wanted to make it easier for them to find the most relevant and social content quickly and share the experience with their friends.

‘Today's launch is an evolution of TripAdvisor's social integrations with Facebook, from the Cities I've Visited app to the Trip Friends feature, and we look forward to seeing even more trips planned with friends on the site.’

Trip Friends, launched in June, allows users to connect to Facebook on TripAdvisor and see where their friends have visited and question them about their trips.

‘The combination of the world's largest travel community and the world's largest social site represents a dynamic new vehicle that will help revolutionise the way travellers plan their trips,’ Kaufer concluded.

The new Facebook integration is initially available only on TripAdvisor.com, but will be rolled out globally in due course.

Users in the UK can still take advantage of the integration by logging into TripAdvisor.com rather than TripAdvisor.co.uk.

TUI Travel-owned LateRooms.com has topped a league table of travel websites for the first time.

However, cruise operators are the lowest performing sector on average, according to the latest eTravel Benchmark results from eDigitalResearch.

Cruise sites scored badly in the mystery shopping survey as they were ‘suffering from a lack of information available throughout the search process, a failure of the brand to connect with the customer and a poor customer service experience’.

Overall, the survey showed that satisfaction with travel websites is steadily beginning to improve – although many still feature poor customer service and after-sales care.

Lloyd Viney, associate director at eDigitalResearch, said: ‘What sets apart sites that consistently perform well in our study time after time are those that not only provide consumers with a fantastic, user-friendly website, but reinforce this with excellent customer services.’

LateRooms.com, which moved up 12 places from the previous survey, saw a good performance across all areas benchmarked, providing an ‘exceptional example of industry best practice’ with a logical search process and responsive customer services.

Overall, hotel agents were the highest performing sector, with rival Booking.com coming a very close second but let down by its booking process and navigation.

Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both cemented their positions in the top tier of the table with an increase in satisfaction across all areas of the study.

However, the airline sector saw its overall results dragged down by budget carriers, with Ryanair, easyJet and bmibaby failing to provide ‘a strong brand message and adequate email and telephone contact’.

The holiday camps and self-catering sector were included in the study for the first time, with Center Parcs, Hoseasons and Butlin’s all finishing in the top half of the table thanks to informative customer services.

The influence of Facebook in online retailing is fast increasing, according to the latest report from Experian Hitwise.

Its report published today, called Getting to Grips with Social Media, says Facebook is the second biggest source of traffic to all websites after Google.

Approximately 1 in 10 visits to a website in September came immediately after a visit to Facebook, up from 1 in 13 visits back in September 2009.

Overall, social networks are sending nearly 13% more traffic to online retailers this year than last year.

They accounted for 11.6% of all UK internet visits during September, representing a year on year growth of 4.3%.

The three dominant players, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, account for 75% of all visits to the social network category.

Facebook accounts for 55% of all visits to social networking sites.
