Karir.com baru saja mengeluarkan hasil riset yang dibuat dalam laporan Salary Benchmark Insights 1.2. Survei tersebut mengukur besaran gaji yang bisa ditawarkan dari tiap industri pekerjaan di Indonesia.

Hasilnya cukup mencengangkan. Data dari survei tersebut mengungkap bahwa industri barang konsumsi (FMCG) menempati peringkat pertama dengan penawaran gaji paling besar. Mereka yang bekerja di industri FMCG bisa mendapat tawaran gaji hingga Rp 504 juta.

Selain FMCG, industri minyak dan gas bumi serta komputer juga berani memberikan penawaran gaji yang tidak kalah tinggi. Penawaran gaji tertinggi di Industri minyak dan gas bumi mencapai Rp 500 juta per bulan, sementara IT/komputer bertengger di angka Rp 400 juta.

CEO PT Karir.com Martin mengatakan, angka penawaran gaji ini sangat mengejutkan. Walau begitu, besaran gaji ini tentu hanya bisa dinikmati mereka yang berada di level eksekutif.

“Angka-angka ini sangat bombastis. Contohnya industri FMCG yang menempati posisi pertama dengan tawaran gaji tertinggi sebesar Rp 504 juta per bulan. Tertinggi kedua adalah Minyak dan Gas Bumi yang menawarkan gaji tertinggi sebesar Rp 500 juta per bulan. Tentu saja angka-angka ini diemban
oleh jajaran eksekutif,” kata Dino.

Beberapa industri lain yang menawarkan gaji dalam jumlah besar adalah kimia, manufaktur, media serta perbankan. Level eksekutif di industri ini bisa mendapat tawaran gaji di atas Rp 200 juta.

Jakarta - PT Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) menyelenggarakan Pameran Yuk Nabung Saham dengan bertema Indonesia Investment Festival (Investival) 2016, Jakarta. Tiap pengunjung yang membuka rekening sebesar Rp 500 ribu saham, maka BEI, KPEI, dan KSEI akan memberikan insentif berupa asuransi dengan uang pertanggungan senilai Rp 10 juta.

Menurut Direktur Perdagangan dan Pengaturan Anggota Bursa BEI, Alpino Kianjaya, acara Investival 2016 merupakan pameran lanjutan dari program pengembangan pasar modal Yuk Nabung Saham 12 November 2015 lalu.

"Pameran Investival 2016 juga diselenggarakan selama Oktober 2016 di 21 kota di Indonesia sesuai dengan Bulan Inklusi Keuangan yang dicanangkan oleh Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK)," ujar Alpino di Atrium Utama Mall Taman Anggrek, Jakarta, Jumat (21/10/2016).

Pameran yang bertempat di Atrium Utama Mall Taman Anggrek, Jakarta ini dimulai sejak 21-23 Oktober berisi talkshow, dan hiburan secara gratis. Untuk Sabtu pameran ini akan dimulai sejak 10.00 - 22.00 WIB dan Minggu dimulai pukul 10.00- 22.00 WIB.

Investival 2016 ini menjadi program sosialisasi dan edukasi yang dilakukan oleh BEI, KPEI dan KSEI, yang didukung oleh OJK yang bertujuan membangun tingkat kesadaran dan ketertarikan masyarakat mengenai investasi di pasar modal. Selain itu acara ini membidik 7.500 pengunjung.

Terletak di dekat Museum Affandi, Yogyakarta, gerobak berwarna biru ini berhenti untuk menjajakan dagangannya. Sekilas tidak ada yang berbeda dengan gerobak roti bakar ini, namun sebuah tulisan terpampang jelas di sisi sebelah kiri gerobak. Tulisan yang membuat kita belajar mengenai makna kehidupan.

“Mohon maaf, saya penyandang tuna rungu dan tuna wicara. Kalau Anda ingin memesan roti, silahkan tulis di buku saja ya…” Jelas tulisan yang ditempel pada gerobak tersebut.
Ternyata tulisan ini adalah cara berkomunikasi yang digunakan pedagang roti bakar ini dengan pembelinya.

Roi Manullang, seorang yang membaca tulisan ini dari kejauhan akhirnya tertarik mendekati gerobak ini. Setelah diamati lebih dekat, ternyata pedagang yang menjual roti bakar dan pisang bakar ini benar seorang penyandang disabilitas. Karena ketertarikan ini pula, Roi memutuskan untuk mengabadikan kejadian ini dalam kamera handphone.

Dihubungi terpisah oleh Liputan6.com, Roi menceritakan kesannya saat berbelanja di gerobak biru ini. “Ternyata Masnya memang cuma bisa nulis aja. Kita cuma nulis orderan, dia pake isyarat oke (jempol)” jelas Roi. Karena perbedaan komunikasi pula, Roi tidak bisa bercerita banyak mengenai Mas yang berjualan Roti Bakar ini.

The girl started screaming in the middle of her EgyptAir flight after her pain medication wore off.

Investigators were seeking to unravel an unsettling mystery Saturday after a 16-year-old girl covered in severe burns arrived at Kennedy Airport on a flight from Egypt, law enforcement sources told the Daily News.

The teenager was sporting horrific injuries — with portions of her lips burned off and her fingers swollen beyond recognition — when she was taken off the plane in a wheelchair about 3:30 p.m., sources said.

“Nobody can understand how she got on the plane,” a source said. “How did they miss this?”

Paramedics were waiting at the airport for the victim, who had started screaming in agony midway through the EgyptAir flight.

Her clothing, which was not religious garb, concealed many — but not all — of her burns and bandages, sources said.

Paramedics rushed her to the Nassau University Medical Center burn unit, where she was recovering Saturday night.

Her condition was not clear but an initial assessment revealed that she suffered second-degree burns over 40% of her body, sources said.

Second-degree burns affect the first and second layers of skin and may involve painful blistering.

The teen’s account to authorities raised more questions than answers.

She said she suffered the burns in a gas explosion in her village, located roughly four hours from the nearest airport, sources said. There were no facilities near her home to treat her, she said, so family members gave her pain medication, wrapped her in some bandages and clothing and put her on the flight.

The pain medication started wearing off several hours into the flight — prompting the girl to howl in agony for much of the second half of the trip, sources said.

A relative was waiting for her at the airport, according to the sources said. It was unclear how much he knew about her condition.

The teen was escorted off the plane by a flight attendant, a privilege her family would have had to pay extra to obtain.

But the flight attendant didn’t wait around after handing off the victim to paramedics at customs, sources said. She’s believed to have boarded the next EgyptAir flight out of Kennedy.

Investigators were trying to track her down early Sunday.

Cirebon - Warga melaporkan kepada pihak kepolisian atas kasus lembaran Al-Qur'an yang dijadikan bungkus makanan hajatan di Dusun 05, Desa Gebang Kulon, Kecamatan Gebang, Kabupaten Cirebon Jawa Barat.

"Kami melaporkannya untuk mengusut pelaku yang sengaja menjual lembaran Alqur'an itu," kata salah seorang warga, Nawawi, Sabtu (15/10/2016).

Nawawi berharap dengan adanya laporan ini, pihak kepolisian dapat mengusut tuntas permasalahan ini agar pelaku penjualan lembaran Al-Qur'an bisa mempertanggung jawabkan perbuatannya.

"Pelaku harus ditangkap dan diproses secara hukum karena ini sudah merupakan tindakan penistaan agama," ungkapnya.

Seperti diketahui, puluhan lembar Al-Qur'an dijadikan bungkus makanan seperti nasi, lauk dan kue di salah satu hajatan warga di desa setempat. Belum diketahui pasti dari mana lembaran tersebut berasal.

Three Kansas men from a militia cell called “the Crusaders” plotted to bomb a mosque and apartment complex home to Somali immigrants, the feds said.

Curtis Allen, 49, Gavin Wright, 49, and Patrick Stein, 47, were charged Friday with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction, according to the Department of Justice's national security division. The Crusaders call Muslims "cockroaches," and they had discussed attacks brutal attacks on Muslims for months, federal prosecutors said.

FBI agents working on tips from an undercover informant said the three men planned to blow up four car bombs at the Garden City apartments. Allen, Wright and Stein hoped the attack on the 120-resident complex would “wake people up,” the feds said.

The arrests followed an eight-month investigation that took the agents “deep into a hidden culture of hatred and violence,” said acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall. “Many Kansans may find it as startling as I do that such things could happen here.”

The informant alerted the FBI after attending meetings of the Crusaders, according to investigators. Allen, Wright and Stein had stockpiled guns, ammunition and explosive components, prosecutors said. They also spied on possible targets and planned to issue a manifesto, according to the feds.

They decided on the apartment complex in Garden City, a meatpacking town of 26,000 people in southwestern Kansas. Many Somali refugees who work at a Tyson Foods beef slaughterhouse live there, and the complex includes a mosque where they worship together.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations called on law enforcement agencies to enhance their protections for mosques and other Muslim institutions in light of the Kansas plot. The civil rights organization also cited reports of threats on an Islamic center in Michigan and graffiti painted on a New Jersey mosque.

“We ask our nation’s political leaders, and particularly political candidates, to reject the growing Islamophobia in our nation,” the group’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, said in a statement.

Stein had recently driven by the complex with the paid informant, describing it as "full of g-----n cockroaches," according to the criminal complaint. He often carried out so-called "surveillance" of the area's Muslims, investigators said Stein told the informant back when the investigation began in February.

"F---ing raghead b-----s!" he shouted out of the informant's car at a group of Somali women wearing traditional garb, the complaint showed. All three men "have routinely expressed a hatred for Muslims, individuals of Somali descent, and immigrants," according to the complaint.

"They chose the target location based on their hatred of these groups, their perception that these groups represent a threat to American society, a desire to inspire other militia groups, and a desire to 'wake people up,'" the complaint said.

Allen had offered his own idea during a conference call in May for what he thought the Crusaders should do to terrorize the Muslim community, according to the charging document.

Allen, Wright, Stein and the informant met multiple times at Wright's business, the G&G Mobile Home Center in Liberal. At one meeting in July, he used Google Maps to drop pins labeled "cockroaches" on locations of potential victims, according to the complaint.

They talked about attacking targets such as city or county meetings, landlords who rent to Muslim refugees, organizations that assist Muslim refugees, a mall frequented by Muslims and Garden City's African Community Center, investigators said. They decided on the W. Mary St. apartment complex in August, according to the complaint.

Yet police in Liberal arrested Allen on Tuesday night after his girlfriend said he beat her, the charging documents showed. His car had ammo for an AR-15, an AK-47 and a Glock handgun, according to investigators.

Liberal police later found nearly a metric ton of ammo at Allen's house, investigators said. FBI agents who searched G&G, where Allen worked for Wright, said they uncovered a detonator believed to be a homemade explosive and other bomb components.

The explosive, hexamethylene triperoxide diamine or HMTD, showed up in two of the bombs that exploded last month in New York in New Jersey, Reuters reported.

"This is known as a primary explosive, very sensitive to heat, shock and friction," the complaint said. "This primary explosive presents a significant public safety hazard and is usually used to create homemade blasting caps to initiate a larger explosive."

Federal agents took custody of all three of them Friday morning. Allen, Wright and Stein face up to life in federal prison without parole if they're convicted.

Corey Feldman is apologizing for dropping the American flag on the "Today" show Thursday after yet another one of his widely mocked performances.

The singer said he was "deeply sorry" and blamed discarding Old Glory on his bizarre dance moves.

"Once I was on stage, my brain reverted to my choreography, which was to throw my hands up in the air with a peace sign. As a dancer, my instinct is to drop anything in my hands," he said in a statement to People.

The star, who was performing his latest song "Take a Stand," added that he didn't have enough time to rehearse.
"In that live moment, it came off as wrong and for that I'm deeply sorry. It was the exact opposite of my intention," Feldman continued.

"Today" host Tamron Hall picked up the flag off the ground and handed it back to Feldman following the performance.

The 45-year-old received a slew of backlash on social media. Ironically, his track "Take A Stand" is meant to be a tribute to America, he said.

The "Goonies" star just can't seem to catch a break — especially on "Today." He was attacked by critics last month who skewered his performance on the morning show.

The insensitive comments from the public brought the star to tears in a now-deleted Facebook video posted two days after the show aired.

"We just wanted to tell everybody that, like, it's been really painful," he said. "We put ourselves out there and we did the best that we could. And, like, I've never had such mean things said about me. Like constantly."

Feldman — who rose to fame in 1980s films like "Stand by Me" and "Goonies — released his fifth studio album "Angelic 2 The Core" in June.

A Pennsylvania pastor faces charges he impregnated a 15-year-old girl from his youth group during a seven-month sexual relationship, according to reports.

The wife of Wesley Blackburn, youth pastor at Faith Brethren Bible Church, told the New Paris church’s head pastor he had confessed to the relationship and asked for a divorce, senior pastor Jim Espenshade told WJAC-TV on Wednesday.

Espenshade and other church leaders immediately fired Blackburn, a 35-year-old father of five, and alerted police last week. He was charged Oct. 6 on hundreds of counts of statutory sexual assault and indecent assault.

Blackburn told a state trooper who found him packing his belongings at the church that he started having sex with the girl in March, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown. He admitted he fathered the girl’s child, the affidavit showed.

Blackburn, who also served as a Sunday school teacher, had met the girl during his first year at the church in 2009, according to the court documents. She had been in his youth group for seventh and eighth graders since 2014, the documents showed.

Police said Blackburn had revealed the affair to his wife the night before. He told her he does not love her and asked for a divorce, according to investigators.

Faith Brethren senior pastor Jim Espenshade said he was "shocked, absolutely shocked" when he learned of the allegations against Blackburn.

She told Espenshade what happened the following morning. The senior pastor and Faith Brethren’s deacons then met to discuss it in the parking lot of the church in the tiny borough 90 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Investigators said Blackburn refused to discuss the matter with Espenshade and the deacons. They decided to can him right away, Espenshade told WJAC.

"We didn't even care what he had to say. We don't tolerate this kind of stuff. It's inappropriate. It's reprehensible.” Espenshade said. “And there was never a discussion of anything else. And I don’t mean this in a terrible way: We didn’t care what the community was going to say about us, we had to do what was right.”

Blackburn faces 84 felony counts of statutory sexual assault, 84 misdemeanor counts of indecent assault and one felony count of corruption of minors, The Tribune-Democrat reported. He remained incarcerated in Bedford County jail on Wednesday with a $200,000 bail.

Deadly small plane crash near Connecticut aerospace factory may have been intentional

The pilot of a small plane that crashed near an aerospace factory in Connecticut, killing a passenger, reportedly confessed that the crash wasn’t an accident.

The FBI is now investigating whether the Tuesday crash in East Hartford was intentional, law enforcement officials told The New York Times.

The Piper PA 34 crashed near a Pratt & Whitney around 3:40 p.m., on its final approach to Hartford-Brainard Airport. Officials said the small plane took off from the airport’s flight school.

The pilot — who was treated for serious burns — has not been identified.

But officials said the passenger — 28-year-old Feras M. Freitekh, of Orland Hills, Ill. — was killed. Freitekh had been issued a private pilot license in May 2015 and was certified to fly single-engine planes.

His relationship to the pilot is unknown.

East Hartford Police said Wednesday that "nothing is being ruled out" in the investigation. Police added there never appeared to be a distress call from the plane.

Two people who were in a minivan near the crash were treated for minor injuries.

Federal authorities started investigating the incident because the plane crashed near the Pratt & Whitney factory, which was deemed “critical infrastructure.”

But company spokesman Ray Hernandez said that it did “not appear at this time that any Pratt & Whitney employees or contractors were involved” in the crash.

The FBI did not immediately comment on the investigation.

Ketua Senat Akademik Undip Sunarso mengatakan, agar dapat gelar tersebut seseorang mesti mendapat usulan. Kemudian, orang tersebut mesti bersedia menerima gelar itu.

"Untuk bisa mendapat gelar honoris causa harus diawali dengan usulan, dalam hal ini Dekan Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu Kelautan yang mengusulkan. Kemudian di antara persyaratan yang mesti disampaikan adalah ada kesediaan keterangan tertulis, dari beliau yang akan diangkat," kata dia dalam keterangan tertulis, Jakarta, Rabu (7/9/2016).

Rektor Undip Yos Johan Utama menambahkan, pemberian gelar honoris causa masih sebatas usulan. "Hari ini utamanya kita mendengarkan kebijakan beliau terlebih dahulu, Proses pengajuan gelar akan kita lalui bersama nantinya," kata dia.

Pada kunjungan itu, Susi Pudjiastuti memaparkan kebijakan pemerintah dalam bidang kelautan dan perikanan. Salah satu kebijakan tersebut ialah pemberantasan penangkapan ikan secara ilegal.

"Indonesia dengan laut terpanjang di posisi nomor dua di dunia, tapi ekspor hasil lautnya duduk di nomor 3 di Asia Tenggara. Hal itu menjadi dasar harus ada kebijakan baru saat saya kemudian diberi amanah oleh Presiden," terang Susi.

Susi Pudjiastuti mengatakan, keseriusannya memberantas pencurian ikan mendapat dukungan dari Presiden Joko widodo (Jokowi). Alhasil, lahirlah satuan tugas pemerantasan ikan secara ilegal atau biasa Satgas 115 melalui Perpres No 115 Tahun 2015.

"Sistem penegakkan hukum satu atap dapat memudahkan kita juga. Dengan satuan tugas pemberantasan penangkapan ikan secara ilegal, maka kita dapat menekan penangkapan illegal fishing. Sehingga kita dapat mengembalikan kedaulatan kita di laut sendiri," tandas dia.

Fasting diets like Beyonce’s are more than just a celebrity fad

Stars from Beyoncé to Benedict Cumberbatch have talked about using fasting diets to get slim quickly, but this is one celebrity craze that has some hard science behind it.

The basic concept of a fasting diet is that you eat very few calories on certain days and eat regularly on others. On your fasting days your body goes into a different mode and starts to burn fat instead of burning glucose.

Early evidence-based trials show promising results-but now the big question is whether these diets promote weight loss that lasts over the long term.

Fasting plans recommend various ratios of fasting to normal days. One plan, alternate fasting, advises eating a regular diet on one day, then restricting yourself to 500 calories or less on the next.
Another popular plan, the 5:2, calls for two days a week of fasting — but on the other five, you can eat whatever you want.

On a low-calorie day in both plans, you might eat plain yogurt and fruit for one meal and grilled chicken with spinach later, but some people simply rely on protein shakes.

A third approach, time-restricted eating, limits all of your daily calories to an 8-12 hour window, triggering your body to go into fasting mode for the rest of the day.

Researchers have found that fasting diets have real results in the short term. Animal studies done with rodents saw short-term improvements in blood sugar levels, weight, and cholesterol.
But so far we have results for only the short term. And the same goes for human studies. Early trials find that people on fasting diets lose weight over the course of six months, but studies lasting longer than six months are limited.

So the question remains: Will they keep it off?

There is evidence that fasting diets can be beneficial, sometimes in surprising ways, when patients try them for reasons other than weight loss.

For instance, some pediatric patients with epilepsy have found that adhering to a fasting diet helps manage their seizures. But some doctors are skeptical about the overall efficacy of fasting diets.
One common reservation is, "Is it really safe to tell people to eat whatever they want several days a week?"

Some of the initial trials suggest that people don't overeat on the days they aren't fasting. But, again, we need more data to be sure.
Many people find fasting diets appealing, and easier to stick to, because you restrict yourself for only a few days a week or hours in a day, but there are real safety concerns for some people.

For instance, fasting isn't recommended for people who have a history of eating disorders, which might be re-triggered. I would advise against fasting for pregnant women and patients over age 65, especially those with heart conditions.
This regimen would also require extra caution in people with diabetes, who may be at risk for low glucose levels.

While some people think fasting sounds easier than cutting back on favorite foods every day, others find the concept hard to fathom. After all, it is very restrictive to eat just 500 calories in a day.

I suggest something far less dramatic to patients of all kinds: Eat the majority of calories during the day and limit eating after 8 or 9 at night. Strong data shows that eating late at night is counterproductive to maintaining a healthy weight. A healthy, balanced diet is the main thing, along with exercise.

I recommend a Mediterranean-type diet of whole grains, healthy fats, and good proteins like fish and lean meats. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of cardio at least five days a week. Ideally, try to incorporate some kind of resistance training twice a week, whether it's yoga, weights, or push-ups.

There is no getting around the fact that losing weight is a day-to-day battle. Every day counts, and every calorie counts. Setting short-term goals is very important, since even losing 5% of your body weight will cut your risk of diabetes and play a huge role in your overall health.

If you have been diligently trying to lose weight for more than three months and still don't see results, it might be time to see a doctor. Ask any questions you have about the fasting diet, or any other approach that seems feasible to you.

America's Female Chess Champion Boycotts Iran Tournament Over Hijab Law

After learning that the 2017 Women's World Chess Championship would be held in Iran, America's top female chess player announced this week that she would boycott the tournament in the name of women's rights.

Nazi Paikidze-Barnes, a Russian-born Georgian-American, has led a public boycott of the event along with a number of her female competitors who object to the Islamic Republic's strict enforcement of a law mandating women's use of a hijab, or headscarf.

Paikidze won the U.S. championship in 2016 and is rated as a Grandmaster by FIDE, the sport's international governing body.

In an Instagram post, Paikidze explained that she is "not anti-Islam" and that she's had "wonderful" personal experiences with Iranian people.

"I'm protesting FIDE's decision not because of Iran's religion or people, but for the government's laws that are restricting my rights as a woman," Paikidze wrote.

"A message to the people of Iran: I am not anti-Islam or any other religion. I stand for freedom of religion and choice. ?? I'm protesting FIDE's decision not because of Iran's religion or people, but for the government's laws that are restricting my rights as a woman. My personal experiences with Iranian people have been nothing but wonderful ?? One day I hope to visit Iran and see women having complete freedom and equality. ??"

Paikidze also created a petition on change.org calling on FIDE to reconsider holding the tournament in Iran and accusing it of violating its own stated principles against sexual discrimination.

FIDE responded to the boycott in a statement.

"There were no complaints from the players or officials and everybody respected the laws of the country, including the dress requirements," FIDE said, referring to three international women's tournaments Iran had recently hosted.

The organization said the dress requirement is Iran's policy, not its own, and that it is "reviewing all possible solutions for the players’ comfort and will discuss all the issues with the organizers in Iran during meetings in the next few weeks."

But Iran's 2015 Asian continental women's champion and grandmaster, Mitra Hejazipour, said Paikidze's decision to boycott would undermine efforts for progress in Iran.

“This is going to be the biggest sporting event women in Iran have ever seen; we haven’t been able to host any world championship in other sporting fields for women in the past,” Hejazipour, 23, told The Guardian newspaper. “It’s not right to call for a boycott. These games are important for women in Iran; it’s an opportunity for us to show our strength."

The U.S. State Department warns all Americans about traveling to Iran, particularly dual-Iranian citizens, highlighting the severe risk for unjust detention.

Iran is known to enforce its hijab law harshly. In May, six young Iranian women were arrested and sentenced last month to a year in prison and 91 lashes after posting a video of themselves dancing without a headscarf. Their sentences have been suspended for three years if they remain out of trouble.

Daily Report: Google Would Like You to Meet Its Gadgets

We present to you Google, the Silicon Valley gadget company.

Google on Tuesday unveiled a long-awaited batch of devices, including a new smartphone, an artificially intelligent home appliance that is the company’s answer to Amazon’s Echo, and virtual reality goggles that are an answer to a whole bunch of companies’ virtual reality goggles.

It may seem odd to see Google — long associated with its search engine, internet tools and mobile operating system — doing its best to put on a gadget fashion show. But an argument can be made that it has no choice.

The reason? Artificial intelligence. A.I. technology has become the topic du jour in Silicon Valley. And Google has been one of the tech industry’s front-runners in developing A.I., from its experimental, self-driving cars to the improving ability of its search engine to understand what you are looking for on the internet.

Surprisingly, Google hasn’t done such a good job of getting that A.I. into the hands of consumers. Amazon has, through its hardware. Now, A.I. will be fused to an array of Google devices, tying consumers back to the company’s powerful computer network.

Google figures there is plenty of time to catch up, despite the two-year head start it gave the Echo.

It’s a reasonable point. Google, after all, was hardly the first search engine. Facebook was not the first social media service. And the iPhone wasn’t exactly the first smartphone. If you jump into a market late, you just have to do whatever it is an awful lot better than the companies there before you.

Google, Lagging Amazon, Races Across the Threshold Into the Home

SAN FRANCISCO — When Amazon introduced its Echo device in late 2014, Google executives were caught off guard. For years, they had predicted the creation of a virtual assistant that would answer questions or help accomplish tasks, and they focused on building that capability into smartphones and tablets.

Amazon took a different approach and created the Echo, a device with the sole purpose of showcasing the company’s artificially intelligent assistant software, called Alexa. Since then, the Echo has become a surprise hit, vaulting Amazon ahead of Google in a race to build technology that interacts as humans do. Users can ask Alexa to play music, dim the lights or call for a ride.

For Google, whose name is synonymous with finding answers on the internet, Amazon’s success with Alexa exposed a vulnerability. Google, along with its parent company, Alphabet, has invested heavily to solve the technology world’s toughest problems, but it often trails competitors in turning those advancements into products and businesses.

On Tuesday, Google is expected to finally unveil its answer to the Echo, alongside new smartphones and tablets. The Google Home device, which looks a little like an air freshener, is expected to go on sale later this month.

Google Home is powered by what Google calls the Assistant, which uses artificial intelligence to understand what users are saying and respond conversationally with the best answers. Google introduced a messaging app last month that incorporates the Assistant, and the company plans to add the feature to its latest smartphones and tablets.

Given the newness of the market for artificially intelligent home gadgets, Google has plenty of time to close the gap. The company believes it can win over consumers with a smarter digital assistant that builds on its stronghold in search and years of research in artificial intelligence.

But the fact that Google was outmaneuvered by Amazon — not Apple, which builds its own digital assistant technology, called Siri, into its mobile products — has caused head-scratching throughout the technology industry. Amazon has a notoriously uneven track record in making hardware, with some hits, like the Kindle e-reader, and spectacular whiffs, like the Fire Phone.

“Amazon is the accidental winner here,” said Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at the Stern School of Business at New York University. “Amazon got there first, which is superimpressive, and it has been a huge hit.”

Google is a leader in natural language processing — the ability to turn spoken words into terms that computers can digest — and its search engine is the starting point for how most people get answers on the internet. In fact, the company says 20 percent of Google searches on mobile phones are done by voice.

So why didn’t Google create an Echo-like device before Amazon?

In part, Google was hindered by a balkanized structure that prevented different groups within the company from working together, according to four current and former employees.

Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., had a large team working on voice search but its focus was on an app for smartphones. The company had a separate team working on the Android operating system, which runs on smartphones, tablets and internet-connected home devices, and they were building virtual assistant technology into mobile devices.

Google bought Nest Labs, a manufacturer of internet-connected thermostats and smoke detectors, for $3.2 billion in 2014 as an entree into the home. But the unit seldom collaborated with the rest of the company. And other Google hardware divisions responsible for building smartphones, tablets, Chromebook computers, Wi-Fi routers and Chromecast devices to stream video were focused on updating products.

A competitor for the Echo, it seems, fell through the cracks.

This is not the first time Amazon has jumped ahead of Google, despite the search company’s considerable technological edge.

From its inception, Google has devoted enormous resources to operating efficient data centers to power its many services. But it was Amazon that identified an opportunity in renting out its technology infrastructure to companies in need of computing power, storage and data analysis. That business, called Amazon Web Services, is now on pace to generate more than $10 billion in revenue this year, while Google is playing catch-up.

A lack of focus can at times compound these issues. Google encourages its employees to spend 20 percent of their time pursuing new ideas beyond their usual responsibilities. Products like Gmail emerged from this policy, but it also fosters a mind-set that, according to one former employee, leads Google to chase too many ideas.

“Part of the problem is that it has a scattershot approach to things,” said Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research. When pursuing new ideas, he said, “they don’t always make big bets strategically.”

Google has spent seven years working on self-driving cars, for example, and it is still not clear how the company plans to cash in on its work. By contrast, Uber, which started as a company around the time that Google started work on autonomous vehicles, is already testing self-driving cars to pick up customers in Pittsburgh.

Despite its many successes, Google has a spotty history of creating devices. In 2012, Google introduced an internet-connected speaker called the Nexus Q. The vision was for the device to plug into a home entertainment system for streaming music or video, a sort of hybrid of an Apple TV and a Sonos speaker. But Google killed the product before it even started shipping it to consumers.

Also in 2012, Google bought the phone manufacturer Motorola for $12.5 billion. The next year, it introduced the Moto X, the first smartphone equipped with a listening chip so users could bring the phone to life by uttering the words “O.K. Google.” It has pushed this feature into the latest phones running its Android operating system. Apple’s more recent iPhones and iPads have a similar feature, activated by the words “Hey Siri.”

But what makes the Amazon Echo stand out is a technology called a far-field microphone that can make out someone’s voice from across a room, even when there is background clatter. And the Echo is always in position to listen for the so-called wake word — Alexa — whereas phones are often tucked away in pockets and bags. According to a former employee, Google has tinkered with far-field audio, but its focus was on the car, not a home device.

Amazon invested in artificial intelligence and speech technologies in the years before unveiling Echo, but its most crucial asset was its strength in the cloud computing market, which it dominates with Amazon Web Services, or A.W.S.

The vast majority of Echo’s intelligence is contained in A.W.S., and most of the apps that developers have built for Alexa run on the cloud service. “The most important architectural vision is that it’s all in the cloud,” Dave Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president for devices and services, said in an interview this year.

Amazon says tens of thousands of developers are creating skills for Alexa, more than 3,000 of which have been released so far. And thousands of developers are working to incorporate Alexa’s voice capabilities into their hardware products. Last month, GE Appliances announced an Alexa app that lets people preheat a connected oven with voice commands.

Chris Herbert, chief executive of a start-up called TrackR that makes wireless beacons for finding misplaced keys and wallets, recently released an app for Alexa that allows people to find their items with voice commands.

Mr. Herbert said he had looked at the voice offerings from both Google and Apple, but neither company yet offered the same range of capabilities as Amazon, because they viewed it as an add-on feature to phones as opposed to a stand-alone computer.

“It’s kind of mind-boggling to me,” he said.

How to Pay for College With Less Stress

In this our quadrennial season of financial hope, we might wish that the major presidential candidates would reckon with one of the large and looming numbers in our lives.

Maybe this particular pair of multimillionaires hears the parents and grandparents who are confounded by college price tags that seem to start at six figures. But the candidates’ plans don’t hold out much cause for hope. Hillary Clinton wants to make in-state tuition for four-year state universities free for families with less than $125,000 in income, but her plan would require the financial help of states that may not want to chip in.

Donald Trump has mentioned refinancing student loans and forcing universities to spend more from their endowments to help students. His website, however, has no formal proposals. Perhaps the debate moderators will demand more details.

So what we need right now is one college savings, paying and borrowing plan to rule them all. The best one I know of — the one that visibly reduces anxiety in the faces of people I preach it to — comes from Kevin McKinley, a financial adviser in Eau Claire, Wis. And you can sum it up in about 30 words:

Save a quarter of the cost over a child’s first 18 years. Pay another quarter out of current income over the next four years. Borrow the rest, split among the family.

Let’s break them down in order, for a family who has its sights on a state university and doesn’t qualify for any grants or scholarships that they would not have to repay.

SAVE A QUARTER Let’s say you think an undergraduate degree from a state university will cost $160,000 in 18 years, including room and board. A quarter of that, per the McKinley plan, is $40,000. To save that much, you’d need to put aside about $115 each month for 18 years if it earns a 5 percent annual return.

Where might it earn that kind of return? In one of those 529 college savings plans that your state probably offers, perhaps in a low-cost mutual fund with a mix of stocks and bonds that gets less aggressive as your child gets closer to 18. The website savingforcollege.com is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about 529 plans.

And where is that $115 supposed to come from? In his 2002 book, “Make Your Kid a Millionaire,” Mr. McKinley suggested looking at the things on your credit or debit card statement and asking yourself this: Would I rather help my kid go to college or would I prefer to keep buying or doing those things on my bill that add up to the number I need to save each month?

Harsh? He doesn’t think so. “I don’t judge what people choose to spend money on,” he said. “But most people with kids going to college wish they could go back and change what they spent, because a lot of it was on things that didn’t have any value in the long run.”

SPEND A QUARTER This step is harder. For parents sending a child to a college right now that costs $100,000 total, they’ll need to find a bit over $500 a month to hit the four-year number, $25,000, that equals a quarter of the total cost.

So rice and beans instead of eating out. No more vacations, or much cheaper ones. If that’s not enough or you already made those changes years ago, a side job may be in order. Doing that, too? Don’t forget that your college-age child is capable of earning $6,000 annually by working full time in the summer and part time during the school year. If your child earns that much, you’re not responsible for this portion.

Are there generous grandparents in the mix? This would be a good time for them to step in if they haven’t already or weren’t sure if they would be able to help until they had their own financial affairs sorted out.

THE BORROWING Back when he wrote his book, Mr. McKinley said that he considered debt a last resort. These days, he’s changed his tune. “You’d like to pay cash for your house, too, but it’s just not realistic,” he said.

First, student loans. Though the terminology and process is (wildly, needlessly) complex, the advice is simple for anyone wanting to borrow $25,000: Take out federal student loans from the government, not private ones that come from a bank or similar institution. The advantage of federal loans is that if your child doesn’t earn much after graduation, you can enroll in a program where you’ll be eligible for lower payments.

Then, parent borrowing. Mr. McKinley notes that we’re at a rare economic moment where three things are happening at once: Home values are rising nicely in many parts of the country, interest rates are low and lenders are a bit looser than they were in the recent past. For people with children in college now, that means that borrowing money against your home may be a good way to come up with your $25,000 chunk.

Mr. McKinley is bearish on the future of student loans and expects them to become generally less available over time. So he suggested a more aggressive way for the parents of younger children to pay for a quarter of college: Draw on home equity now while you can, put the money in certificates of deposit and treat your (often tax-deductible) interest payments on the loan like an insurance policy, where you’re paying a “premium” just to be sure you’ll have access to the capital. After all, as we saw in 2009, banks that are loose now with home equity loans can change their minds in a heartbeat.

If you do not own a home, or drawing on home equity seems too risky or needlessly expensive (or you’re worried about how that money might affect any financial aid that you end up qualifying for), the federal government offers loans to parents, too.

THE MANY CAVEATS Plenty of people don’t make enough money to save anything for college, let alone save $500 a month while their child is in school. Others could have saved but didn’t and are panicking now that the first tuition bill is close at hand. If you’re in that situation, please read the two guides I wrote in 2014 for people in that spot.

The McKinley plan is linear. Your financial life probably won’t be, pockmarked as most of our lives are with unpaid parental leave or illness or unemployment or inopportune stock market declines or a bunch of these things all at once. But the plan is also flexible. You could borrow a bit more or save a bit more or consider a gap year between high school and college to put away additional funds.

If there is more than one child, these numbers could double, and if private colleges are under consideration, they may double again or more. But at private colleges especially, paying tuition for two children at once will increase your chances of qualifying for need-based financial aid (the kind you get after filling out the federal aid form and sometimes other application forms). Moreover, many colleges (private ones, in particular) offer a different kind of help, merit aid, to good students, even if their families don’t qualify for need-based aid. That can easily lop five figures off costs each year per student, even if it doesn’t bring the private college price down to the level of a flagship state university.

Which brings us to a couple of other challenges. How do you know when it’s worth paying a whole lot more for one school than another? Mr. McKinley is facing this question right now with his 17-year-old daughter, Ellie, a high school senior with an interest in web design. She was eyeing the Rhode Island School of Design or the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, but she can study the same things at the University of Wisconsin-Stout for less than a third of the retail cost.

The family is leaning hard toward the cheaper option. “If you’re the kind of kid who can get into the more expensive school, then you’ll usually have the talent and moxie to succeed even without their education,” Mr. McKinley said.

There is also the bizarre unpredictability of the process. The rack rates are high, and while many people get discounts based on need or merit, you have no way of knowing which, if any, you might qualify for many years from now. You’ll probably get the answers some spring day in the future and then have a few weeks, at most, to make what may be among the biggest and most consequential financial decisions of your life.

So good luck with that. But don’t let the absurdity of what the system has become paralyze you into doing nothing. “You don’t have to come up with a quarter of a million dollars for your kid,” Mr. McKinley said. “Do what you can now, and just keep building off of it.”
