Trayvon Martin Birthday- ZImmerman Boxing Match

As we all may know, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was killed two years ago by neighborhood watch coordinator, George Zimmerman. Known through the case by owning a Black hooded sweater, Skittles, and Arizona Iced Tea the moments of his death, the world supports his would-have-been 19th birthday today by patronizing the sorts. Many top social media platforms- Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter site #RememberTrayvonMartin and #RIPTrayvonMartin as today's trending topic.

Despite the beauty that lies in national support of his life, craze fills the net with promotion of a "Celebrity Boxing Match' between killer George Zimmerman prospectively against artists like rapper DMX, The Game and former Dad-ager Michael Lohan. DMX is said to be the likely opponent as opposed to The Game's too high payment demands. Although this fight would seemingly allow those in fury with Zimmerman an attempt to closely reciprocate his effects on young Trayvon Martin, Rev. Al Sharpton said it best stating,

"We must be very careful not to glorify or in any way sidestep the implications of making someone whose only claim to fame was killing an unarmed young man named Trayvon Martin into a cultural celebrity or hero".

My biggest frustrations with this fight is the publicity Zimmerman will very well receive throughout the process. Despite the promoters reassurance of donations to charity, I refuse to support his promotion of self neither possible income. Many have expressed similar perspectives by initiating petitions urging the cancellation of the fight. I've signed two so far.

Baby, It' Cold Outside- Don't Believe The Hype

This morning, the snow and view from my window was all too intriguing. Zac woke up full of excitement anticipating his interaction with all of this beauty and eagerly got dressed to start the day. I usually have second thoughts about taking him out in the snow but every time those questions arise, I think back to my own childhood and remember the days I enjoyed making snow angels and snow ball fights… But then, I snap into reality and think about the cold he'd just gotten over. Well, today my adolescence won and I triple layered Zac to brave the snow, taking the scenic route to the grocery store.

(Pardon the brief profanity)

Now, there's been a lot about this magical un-melting snow in New York City. Ive seen several dozen videos regarding this and did a little investigation. To put it simply, dry snow+ dry air+ trying to melt fire= sublimation. Basically, because our air and temperatures have been so low and dry, the snow has difficulty melting as we know it. So instead of seeing actual liquid when fire is place, it vaporizes. We've all learned this in school at some point. Don't believe the hype lol.

The government's not after us with this one lol.

The Beloved Zara Season Sale!

If anyone knows me, they'll know my love for ZARA… I've over-patronized this brand for many years where, 80% of my collection of shoes are branded as ZARA. While doing last minute winter coat shopping with my sister, we stumbled upon this special find at ZARA's season sale. Ive been stalking this beautiful denim jumper for weeks and found the only size extra small at the 59th and Lexington store. I tried it on and it fit like a glove (among many others) and considering the original price tag of $119.00, I had to pass it by until, I saw that pretty orange tag of $19.99!! Being the feign I am I'll be wearing it sometime this weekend… and the following weekend… And probably twice the week after lol.

Zac's First Music Class

This week, Zachary and I were invited to participate in his Grandfather- Matthew Jamison's Musical instruction class, Feed Your Mind Music. It's an awesome opportunity for children to develop musical skills and engage in extra-curricular activities at no cost. After school on Tuesdays and Saturdays, two musical instructors teach children the concepts of music from an interactive perspective. I was a little nervous with Zac being the youngest in the class but found myself amazed at his level of concentration. This guy THOROUGHLY enjoyed the class although, I found myself being a Mommy and stepping in to assist him despite the skilled instructor doing a great job at directing.

Staten Island Ferry with Zac!

There are very few people who are on Zac's "Favorites" list. My sister Seanice (aka Auntie Niecey) happens to be one of them… So much of a favorite; he begged to go on an "adventure", meeting her at the Staten Island Ferry after work today. After waiting half an hour for her boat to arrive, we decided to make the slightly sleepy Zac's adventure even more exciting. We walked around the deepest corners and attacked the nearest Dunkin Donuts for their 99c any size iced coffee. While my sister and I basked in the great large coffees, Zac enjoyed his fancy cup of free warm milk. I find the best way to keep my chipmunk awake when he feels his bed calling to create moments of adventure. Any everyday task like "The Book Museum"/ The Library or "The Clothes Museum"/ H&M becomes a wonderland waiting to be explored. The adventure ended as the three of us raced to the empty Wall St station… of course Zac beat us to the finish line.

This Season, United Colors of Benetton is screaming at its competitors!

High quality sweaters and super strong denim has Mom's and kids alike in a state of "WOW". Zac's grandmother got him an awesome collection of United Colors- Kids gear for Christmas. After we tried on the clothes, I fell in love with the quality and did some investigation on their website. You'll find a great display of the upcoming seasons goodies for kids of all ages. I selected the "shop" and found some of the items Zac received. I honestly fell in love with the idea of being able to see what they have now and what is soon to come. There is currently a sale of up to 50% off which I will be patronizing!

My Grandparents celebrated their Golden 50th Anniversary. While picking out clothes for the party, the first thing Zac could think of wearing was his logo sweater. I of course intervened and incorporated a little bit of ZARA and H&M.

Early Sunday Morning, Zac and I decided to visit our old church in Brooklyn. After getting dressed we headed towards our local bus stop and learned the bus wouldn't come for another 30 minutes and 86'd the whole idea. As an alternate plan, we headed to see my Grandparents and basque in whats left of the 50 degree weather.

Restoration Rock!!

Zac and I stumbled upon this years 7th annual

Restoration Rocks Music Festival!

After waking up to the sound of awesome oldies music, I decided to get my chipmunk dressed to see what all the excitement was about. As we got ready, the music seemed to get better and better... And as my excitement built, so did my sense of hearing when my front door opened. Before I could peep out my bedroom door, it was my MOMMY who came to surprise us! I slipped into a simple maxi dress, ankle boots and denim jacket (which the weather was oh-so fitting) and ran out to see a massive crowd that had taken over Fulton street. Both Brooklyn and New York avenues were blocked off with little shops and tables with African Decals, face painting and informational booths. My Mom ran into an old friend who sells African jewelry and caught up on info like how her daughter now owns a cupcake empire (more info here) as Zac met up with old friends, got his face painted and photo's taken by the events photographers.

Chrisette Michelle sang her neck off and Leon reminded us of how handsome his handsomeness was. Big Daddy Kane hit em with a quick one while the crowd lasted for hours afterwards. It was awesome to see my neighborhood be able to entertain and socialize so freely.

No overwhelming police policing or violent rampages as I remember only a decade earlier.

Restoration Rocks definitely served as a re-introduction to the world the Bed-Stuy is better.

Hopefully these events can last a longer or even expand

At times as single a single woman, you'll find yourself waiting for companionship or a dating partner. All of your girlfriends seem to be in successful relationships while you find yourself recycling phone numbers in your contact list. Take a look and see if your stuck in the past and may have trouble being single...

There's an ex you've been holding on to for 3-4 years. You're not completely attracted to, you know he did you a tad bit dirty but, for some temporary testosterone, you'll hit an occasional movie and let him make a move or two on the low.
Dating the same lame guy for several weeks, you notice he has traits you can't quite ignore or get over. After dropping him, you find yourself reuniting and putting up with nose picking/boring conversation/ too loud gangster rap music in lieu of cuffing season
You're contact listing has the phone number from the guy you met at the Publix/Pathmark last summer that never called... He might remember how great your meatloaf recipe was
You find yourself adding an ex or former date on social networks (instagram, facebook, twitter) to let them see what they may be missing or "He's still single, I may have a chance"
The Black Swan bar on Bedford was his as much as YOUR favorite spot on date night... There's nothing wrong with making an appearance... you just make sure your outfit is right in case he or or one of his friends show up
You give the not-so-tall-or-cute guy at the club your number hoping your standards may be too high, "He might be different than the others"
At least 5 men in your neighborhood/at work/at church have your number in the spirit of keeping your options open
You have wandering eyes. After getting off the train from work, you're constantly looking around and overly aware. You find yourself locking eyes mostly with men and at least 4 per block radius.

One thing I've learned from many different men...

They can literally smell an insecure, lonely, desperate woman.

The good ones gravitate to women who are focused and limitedly aware of the guys around them. Walk with your head high, spend more time thinking about how to make work a little easier tomorrow or how many accounts you can close instead of how slim the pickings of handsome men there are near your job.

Most importantly, being alone is a great time to develop yourself and learn some things you weren't aware of.

For the past 2 months, Zac has been asking to visit the "Moozeeahhm"...

His Grandpa took him on an awesome trip to the historical Brooklyn Museum a few months back and he can't seem to get it out his noggin. On Mom.Me-Sun days, I ask him what it is he'd like to do and of course, the "Moozeeahhm" pops up as an option. So, we've visited DOZENS of self-made museums thus far....

His excitement and enthusiasm made me the happiest person in the world!

We've gone to many libraries before but this one seemed to make a lasting impression. Everyone was so friendly and the massive front entrance left seating for us to eat our snacks, run around, and take in the sun. We took a walk over to the Brooklyn Museum and walked around (or as Zac calls it- an adventure) the outside of the museum.
Most Brooklynites know, the Museum hosts Target First Saturdays... free events every first Saturday from 5pm-11pm showcasing artwork, film, and live music. On those days (particularly the first Saturday of the month) where there's absolutely nothing to do and I wanna dress up (or down) to get out of the house, I head to first saturdays. Its a great way to meet people and add to cultural insight.

FLASHBACK!

About two weeks after my group interview, I had my final interview with the hiring manager and a store manager of another location. They had me walk one of the stores and share what it was that I noticed that needed to be updated...

That moment was used to determine my ideologies and priorities as a store leader.

At the end of that small project, I learned that the store manager I spent that precious hour with was my potential manager, and I had gotten the job as well as my job offer in that day!

FAST-FORWARD!!

H&M prides itself in leadership and advancement. Anyway that you can execute that.

LET THEM KNOW!

I was able to train and learn what H&M looks for in the hiring process. Whether you're going for a Sales Advisor, Visual Merchandiser, Department Manager, or Store Manager; to ensure your experience is successful, display in as many ways as you possibly can your form of leadership.

MY personal questions I'd ask during interviews are:

"At your previous job, how did you take the lead in a difficult situation?"

"Explain a moment where your co-worker challenged your direction"

"Tell me about a time when you were able to motivate an unhappy co-worker"

Lastly, the biggest piece of information I could share!

Make sure you pay close attention during the online questionnaire.

It's not just something to pass by...

THAT questionnaire determines whether or not you'll get that call back and why.

Make sure all of your answers are as independent and solution oriented as possible.

Although, the truth reveals itself in the survey.

The Greatest Interview EVER: H&M Edition

This week, I've been lucky enough to attend the Greatest Interview Ever hosted by none other than H&M.

Hennes and Mauritz is the trendy international brand known to all of fashion.

They've managed to cover most of the world with stores in North America, Europe, China, and most recently Chile in South America.

This past week, I've been able to reach the THIRD step in the interview process for a Department Manager position.
To keep the integrity of the interview, I'll share a brief overview of what I've encountered. Otherwise, here is the 411 on interviewing with H&M

Step 1: The Phone Interview
This is your first encounter. You'll be asked questions based on your online application, work experience and history, store volume, etc. At the end of the interview, you may either here the famous FAIL phrase: "We'll reach out to you for a date" or PASS with "when will you be available this/next week".

Step 2. Interview at Headquarters
Here you'll discuss your resume, and live examples of potential work scenarios. There may be two hiring managers. One focused more on generic questions and the other taking notes. Towards the end, you may sign off on a background check and be notified of a potential follow up interview if you pass.

Step 3. Interactive Interview
This is where it gets exciting. There will be 4 activities lasting 20 minutes with a small group of other applicants and 6 Managers who have traveled the country and world working with H&M. You'll be seated in a room that has dope titles such as "Moscow" and "Argentina" for example. Snacks will be bowled all for the taking. Do NOT be shy, it's all for you. Although a lengthy process, I have never been so intrigued and overwhelmed from an interview by a retail company. If you're accustomed to the classic "What do you do when...", be prepared for the actual "do when... During this portion of the interview, you'll be doing a LOT of sweating, and moving so you may be asked to dress comfortably. Do just that.

Not necessarily in converse and a hoodie but, ensure you represent the casual professionalism of the brand. Ladies, do not wear heels you'll potentially want to change out of. I personally wore 2inch thick heels by the Gap, Sky blue ripped jeans by H&M, a Black tank with pink lining by H&M, and my favorite Bomber jacket by Brooklyn Industries.

To keep the integrity of the interview, I won't share the EXACT details of what activities but I assure you, be yourself, be respectful, and I assure you, as much as it may seem, this is 100% NOT A COMPETITION. Try your best to use team work. Every single activity will show who you truly are in the heat of the moment, during stressful situations, and evaluate how you interact with your partners.

I'm not sure what my results are but despite the potential outcome, I've learned a great deal of who I am through this experience. Here are a few ideas of what to wear if you're having any trouble!

This month...

I deliberated with myself hoping to come up with ways to enhance my present. How to possibly chase after my passions in music, art, and fashion and maintain my career. Ways to protect my sons innocence all the while being able to properly prepare him for a competitive future. So far I haven't found the answers but instead discovered a peace in knowing that my curiosity means I'm headed in the right direction.

In OTHER news...

A few months ago, I got some free tickets from Regal Cinema. My Mummie and I went to see Iron Man 3 which is by FAR the best movie in the history of all Marvel movies (I DARE you to beg to differ, lol). Tony Stark is more relatable, hilarious and spunkier than ever. There's a transparency in this part of the trilogy that allows you to feel the moral and enjoy the action and humor in the midst.

Some folks may not know...

My very own Zac is not only the cutest but has a name with dope meaning.

7 Months pregnant, I was reading the Bible frustrated and unsure of a name for my future Swag Prince.

I knew it had to be cool.

Had to be "hire worthy".

Had to have great meaning.

I came across the book of Zechariah.

The story took me into a world where I couldn't stop reading.

The name "Zechariah" means "God remembers".

At that moment I decided the name Zachary Sean Clarke was the money maker!

"Zac" during play time.

"Zachary Sean" to get his attention

and "Zechariah" when I mean business.

His middle name is also cool dedication to my DAD Sean Clarke.

It only made sense to honor my fathers passing in the life of my son.

Father's Day Memoir

I remember walking home with my Dad in the middle of the winter...

My sister on the left hand as I held tightly onto the right.

My gloveless hands slid along the porch of an apartment and I grabbed the biggest pile of snow my hand could hold. Even with my fingers frozen, the idea of letting go of such beautiful snow helped to fight the feeling and discomfort. After learning that the snow had disappeared, I cried until I understood that the snow had only changed its state and would sometime soon reappear just as I had left it.

The toughest feeling in coming to terms with my Dads passing is whether or not to hold on to the beauty of his memory even if its painful or to let go and hope to have the place fulfilled in time.

For the past 4 years I've worn the SAME EXACT hair style!

As I breezed through my Facebook pictures and bored myself from the lackluster side swept bangs, I realized it was time for a true change.

My hair has been natural for quite some time meaning:

-NO relaxer

-NO texturizer

-NO perms
With that, I decided to join the kinky-curly crew and embrace my naturally beautiful hair.

For the past week, I've been trying the Bantu Knots and manipulating my natural curl patterns to see where it takes me. The entire has been quite interesting but I thank GOD everyday that my Mum is a hairstylist... Lord KNOWS the outcomes may have been truly TRAGIC, lol

Wish me luck as I figure out how this works.

50+ hour work weeks have kept me away from doing some of the things I most enjoy...

Late night dinner with the ladies, Reality T.V. with mi madre, and most importantly, hang time with my chipmunk, Zac. To make up for time lost, I took the most important man I know out for an evening at the park.

The weather had been awesome the entire day. I couldn't miss a moment!

These are all moments in time referenced by great music.

This stand-in keyboardist for Maroon 5 is more than a soulful voice but most definitely got my vote!

I discovered this dope MC from my homie LeSher's facebook post. Other than knowing of her NY-Philly background, I'm not all too certain of the story behind Ra-The MC. But, I must say, after seeing this... 'Dreams'. I'm intrigued.

Philly based writer Darrell Jamal otherwise known as Rell JR hits the scene with great music. It kind of reminds me of the only true rap I can handle... Tribe Called Quest and Kendrick Lamar. Freddy E YouTube phenomenon, rapper, and comedian committed suicide.

Not only because he is...

He was...

A great person who's goal were to simply make people laugh and become successful but, his death had me questioning what pushed him to make such a strong decision.

At only 22 years old, what situation could be so difficult?

Why didn't he have anyone to talk to?

Then, I thought to myself.

In all truth and honesty...

Sometimes, things get a little too tough, the answers to the problems seem all to distant.

In those times, I realized I'm blessed with having too much to lose.

A loving mother.

A loyal sister.

A dream come true for a son.

But in those moments when those people are too far to reach and there's no one to talk to,

What do you do?

How would you react to a friend in a desperate situation?

What do you do when you have no confidant or faith in God?

One truth I have in knowing is,

I've been blessed with too much to lose.

I hope that I can be good enough friend to stop the ones I love from any hurts or from making the wrong decision.

Farewell to The Gap

This year gave me quite a bit to look forward to.

I was lucky enough to be hired to work with one of the most well-received stores in the Downtown Brooklyn area, gain an unexpected promotion within my arrival and learn some overwhelming news along the way.

The store I most recently said farewell to will now share farewells themselves.

The Flatbush Avenue Gap at Kings Plaza will be closing down.

It's quite a surprise to hear.
The store that once housed a beautiful variety of Men's, Women's, Kids, and Baby clothing will no longer be. Loyal customers will now have to travel as far as Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, or 17th and 5th, considering the unfortunate closing of South Street Seaport from Hurricane Sandy.

Originally, Kings Plaza was the shoppers destination for local Brooklynites and Gap was the place to find your must have basics. As the economy changed and gentrification reared its head, the need for the mall changed. Security tightened up as rambunctious after school shoppers participated in unfortunate mayhem and assisted in the downgrade.

I was given the opportunity to work with wonderful people and learned more humbling and lifelong lessons there than at any other Flagship location in my 5 year Gap history. I applaud and salute the ten year team and those who desired to make a difference.

The store may be closing its doors as early as the 26th of January.

Word on the street is, alongside Gap's inability to make quota, the property owners were not interested in downsizing and rebuilding the space and may be utilizing it as a Food Court.

How strange is that?
