Avahs Garden

2022-06-29T11:36:00.000-07:00

I love having flowers in my gardens. They attract bees, butterflies, other pollinators and some flowers actually repel the unwanted bugs and pests.

Here is a sampling of some of the flowers in my small backyard.

They have all been easy to grow for the zone I live in to grow.(8b,(mostly9&10),11)

We can grow flowers & veggies year around .

Geraniums

There are approximately 422 species of this annual plant. They like full sun, and mine do very well in mostly shade! They stay all year long where I live and are super easy to grow and propagate. I have a video on TicTok about Geraniums. @avah0070

The leaves and flowers are safe to eat and have been said to have medicial benefits. People make essential oils out of the flowers, leaves and stems. I have not tried this, if you have please let me know how they taste and what benefits you have found in them.

HollyHocks

I had a friend over 20 yrs ago give me some seed from her garden of HollyHocks and I am still growing them year after year from what she gave me! I save the seeds and give them to my family and friends too.

The seeds spread and reseed easily and, year after year I don't even try to plant them any more, they reseed themselves.

I do not get any allergic reaction from touching them as I have read that some people with contact can trigger a redness to your skin. Hollyhocks are non-poisonous to dogs and cats.

Elegant Zinnias

I bought a Dollar Tree box of mixed flower seeds and the Zinnias really did well from the mixture.

My flower garden has so many that grew from that box. The Zinnias have to be replanted every year, they love full sun!! Maybe that's why they are doing well in my garden. They are great for attracting bees and butterflies as pollinators. They are SO colorful and really add to the beauty of the garden. Turns out that they are great to plant next to tomatoes to help protect them from common garden pests and I have many right next to my tomatoes.

Bougainvilleas and Nasturtium

Bougainvilleas are so hardy!I don't need to water a lot which is good for where I live.

It comes in many different colors. I love this white one in my yard. It grows SO much I have to constantly cut it back.

Nasturtium is a very hardy flower. It loves full sun. It reseeds itself and comes back year after year. Nasturtiums are great for drawing away pests in the garden. I planted mine near my tomatoes and squash plants. They can also attract bees and butterflies too!

The leaves and the petals are eatable. It contains high levels of Vitamin C and has many claims of health benefits. I would research the eatable uses of it before eating. There are some cautions to take when eating could cause stomach aches and other side effects.

Star Jasmine and Stone plant

Star Jasmine flowers once a year. They are so fragrant and beautiful. I love how mine grows and climbs on the fence and is a gorgeous hedge. They are super easy to grow and stays all year around. The growing zone I am in is Zones 9 and 10.

The pink flower from this succulent is from the Stone Plant family. It doesn't need a lot of water and flowers once a year like this one. Its a great addition to my succulent garden.

I had a "rock pond" in my back yard and could never get it to work properly. So my son in law, @Byron Talbott , suggested I put some dirt in it and have a succulent garden. It was the perfect suggestion and is totally doing well and so beautiful.

Chrysanthemums and Marvel of Peru

This Chrysanthemum was a plant that I bought from Costco in fall 2021 and decided to replant it and see what will happen. It has flourished and doing well in my front flower garden. I loved the color for my fall decor and now its coming back!

The Marvel of Peru is a plant that I have had for many years. I bought a seed packet not know anything about it. They reseed them selves and come back year after year. They actually take over the little flower garden area where they grow. They open in the morning and close in the heat of the day.

China Rose and Sweet Alyssum

The China Rose is my favorite color and was why I bought this rose bush. It has been growing so well and will flower on and off all year long.

The Sweet Alyssum was a total surprise to me. I bought a six pack from Home Depot and just planted it here in a super large pot. I had other plants in the pot and just planted to see what would grow. It grew and grew until it was overflowing over the pot. I also have planted some succulent in this pot to see how they will grow. They are doing well !

Much of my planting is trial and error. It's not that I am a great gardener. I never give up and just keep trying. I have had MANY planting fails. It makes me so happy to just get outside , walk barefooted around my yard and try , try , try!

Happy Planting and best wishes from

Avah's Garden.

Garden in Full Bloom,( with a little help from my friends.)

2013-07-09T09:56:00.000-07:00

Zucchini, green beans, tomatoes, Bok Choi, green peppers, cucumbers.
I've had a difficult time with the cucumbers this year. My sister in law said , I am not to plant next to the zucchini. SO , I bought plants instead of seed this time and planted them in 3 different places to see where they will bloom. Pictures below.

When I first started the garden the grand kids were around. Such a fun experience.

Raspberries...they look nice here, but I don't get a big harvest. Maybe its too hot?
Do you grow Raspberries??
How is it going for you???

Some of the harvest, it's SO colorful.

I cover the tomatoes with a net to keep birds and critters away.

If you look closely there is a bee in the flower. Bees are SO important to a garden.

On my second and third try.....the cucumbers are finally growing.

Lettuce took awhile to catch on , they are doing well now. They HATE the heat in So.Cal.

Basil is really going crazy now. I love Caprese Salad, fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella.
I make sure to snip off the flower on the basil so it keeps growing tall.

#2 area- I put MORE cucumbers around the yard. Determined to have them grow.

YAY! I have one pear!!

Who's been eating my grapes!! UGH!!!
What should I do...??? Any suggestions! I may just put a net over these too!

My beautiful little helper.

She makes sure she waters the garden in her cute little scarf dress from her other Nana.

Hangin' by the garden. Great lessons in growing for the children.

My grandson LOVES to help grandma pick the "bad boys' or weeds. He is digging

the digging!!

Hope you enjoyed the pictorial of my garden and family. Have a wonderful full harvest summer!

Expanding my Organic Garden

2013-04-17T19:10:00.009-07:00

Looking back!!!

Seem SO weird this post was made so many years ago!! My garden was just a baby then.

I love this garden now. Will show you the updated. Also take a look at my Instagram. I have posted there a

updated few photos.

Finished product!!!

This took almost a month to prepare. I am going to share the steps to my expanded

garden.

I used this organic dirt to fill my old garden beds and my new 12' by 4' .

I needed 10 more organic bags.

We cut out 12' 4' area in the yard. It sat for a week and the weeds started to come out. I wanted this so I could use the black material over it to help kill the weeds naturally with the hot sun.

I bought this black material from Big Lots for $6. This is a special material that will help kill the

weeds under it. The sun beat down on this for a week until I put the new dirt on the top. The top soil rests for a few days. (thats just what I like to do , no scientific data on that)

In the meantime I started my organic seedlings in organic soil.(carrots, beans, lettuce, cucumbers) I was SO excited to find organic plants at Whole Foods. Not ALL Whole Foods have them. I found Bok Joi, peppers, Basil, radishes, beets, cucumbers, artichokes and zucchini. Before I knew Whole Foods was selling organic plants I bought 2 tomato plants from Home Depot. I planted some flowers that are a natural bug deterrent. I have ordered asparagus from a catalog. (link below) I don't know a lot about growing asparagus but excited to learn.

I will keep you up with the progress of my garden and post more pictures as it matures.

I have SO much room in my garden now and so excited to fill it up.

What are you planting in your garden?

Bought my raised bed from: gardeners.com

I also buy seeds and other supplies from:

Spring at the Getty,LA- with the family.

2013-03-09T07:37:00.000-08:00

I LOVE the Getty, LA. They are having a special viewing of " The Women in Blue Reading a Letter"

This will only be there until the end of March. So ...of course ...I HAD to make it over to the Getty to see this beautiful painting, on loan from Amsterdam.

I studied this when I was in art school and never thought I would see it. I think that is why I was filled with emotion when I got to see it in person.

It was smaller than I had imagined, still thrilling.

The light is coming from a window you can't see, but you know is there! I wonder what she is so intent on reading?

The MOST famous painting at the Getty is the , Irises, by Vincent van Gogh 1889

Ballet Dancer- Edgar Degas

Waiting- Edgar Degas, about 1882

The Milliners- Edgar Degas

Young Italian Women at a table- Paul Cezanne , French about 1895

The BEST part of the trip was being able to spend time with my children and husband. We made a day of it. Church, with my husband and daughter singing " The Prayer", lunch, Getty and dinner. Perfect day!!

NAMM show 2013

2013-03-01T22:30:00.000-08:00

NAMM 2013

My husband and I go to the Namm show every year. It's great to see all the new instruments, friends, and have a couple of coffees! We walk around and visit the many booths.

My husband is a sax player and Yamaha sponsors him. SO...our first stop is the Yamaha division.

We visit with a friend from many years ago that now works for Yamaha. Good times!

Amazing display of strings!

Woodwinds and Brass galore!

My fav display are the Daisy Rock guitars for girls. Such a great way to inspire girls to start playing seriously. These guitars are studio quality.

Alfred music sent me a free copy of both of these guitar method books. One for the girls and one for the guys. I am so excited to be teaching beginning guitar to about 30 students. These books have been so helpful. ALSO love that I get to teach them "Stairway to Heaven"and "Ode to Joy". I got an app for my iPhone so I can tune all of the guitars. I really suggest this to assist in tuning your guitars.

A WALL of amps....a sneak smile :)

More percussion instruments than you have EVER seen!

They had tons of recorders in every color. I loved this one.

Support your local music store when buying instruments, books, and misc music supplies.
In my area are Sam Ash,Guitar Center, and Baxter Northrup.

Smile and the world smiles with you!
Thanks

Excited for Spring planting.

2013-01-15T19:55:00.000-08:00

I was talking to a friend on the phone and she told me that the discount store Big Lots, has planting supplies already. I like to get them before the inexpensive places sell out. SO ...I took a trip to the store and found a gold mine of goodies. I compared the prices to Target and on line store and it was SO much less money. I will plant in the starter pots in March some time. I can put them in the ground in April or end of March.

I bought different size pots.

The seed starter on the bottom shelf shown here are plastic with 72 cells!! It comes with a humidity dome, greenhouse like, to help keep the moisture and heat in. This was only $4.50. I saw a smaller one at Target for triple that cost!! All I need is dirt, water and some sun.

I like the pellet type of planters because I won't need dirt. I just can grow the plants and put them in the ground. Easy!

I will use these pots too...extra bonus ....they are organic!!

Just in case you need a new one. The hoses were a great price!

The special pots that grow herbs and strawberries look fun. I have never used them before. I will try and see how it goes. I will keep you posted. If you have used these before leave a comment. I am curious on how good these work.

Idioms for kids~

2013-01-03T19:40:00.000-08:00

This was a fun project for older students in the elementary grades. They are learning about idioms. They are not going to illustrate what it means but draw the literal meaning of the saying.
This can turn out to be a fun and hilarious project. The children don't know at first what it means and just draw it. Like "Heart of Gold" means a wonderful person who will always , go the extra mile, for you. (ha ha!) They draw a picture of someone with a real heart made out of gold.
Have some fun with your students this semester using idioms. You can find dozens of them.

I hope you enjoyed these. Sign up to get my weekly blog sent right to your email address.
Happy New Year everyone!

Winterizing your Garden- Part 3- final touches until spring.

2012-12-29T15:20:00.001-08:00

Winter is in full swing.

Get your garden soil ready for next spring.

Get your catalogs out for next years planting. Some catalog suggestions below.

Watch out for heavy lifting...use a gator or wheel barrel to move heavy objects, soil and garden supplies.

Bring inside the potted plants, keep them in warm temps and water, so you can put them back out in Spring.
For California growers you can bring the plants close to the house to avoid the occasional frost. Plant broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, bok choy, peas and lettuce for your winter garden. You will want to start your winter garden in Sept.- Nov. There is no hard fast rule, sometimes gardening is trial and error. I didn't plant one this year because I traveled during December.
I am enlarging my garden for this coming season. I want to put in two more above ground boxes. I am planning the layout and rotations now. I'm going to scan the catalogs to try something new or different varieties.

Protect the roses from the roots coming up because the ground heaves. Put a barrier around the plant and put dirt inside. When the ground freezes then warms up the roots will come up or heave, then the roots will get mushy and disease can come in. This will insulate the roots.

Cover the holly because it is edible and deer and other animals will munch.

Don't cut back the tree peony it will turn back to a bush if you do. Let it dry and buds will form for the Spring. It will grow big and beautiful.

My sister in law planted these. Next year I may try planting beans too!

Dry beans on a rack, keep moving them around and pick through them to get out the unwanted ones.
Growing beans are SO rewarding. You can use in soups on cold winter days.

Some great catalogs for seeds 2013 are Territorial Seed Company, The Cook's Garden for seeds and plants, Burpee, AND Gardeners Supply.
Happy planting!!! Thanks to my sister in law Ann, for all her hard work, planning, teaching and inspiring me to love gardening.

3rd grade projects and Art!

2012-12-29T12:05:00.000-08:00

I love being a substitute. When I go to all of the classes I find the most interesting projects, art, and bulletin boards. When I put these pictures on my blog its a way to remember what I saw AND show you.

Self portrait, make squares first, each square has a design in them, draw a face, face 2 light colors, background 2 dark colors, shirt 2-3 colors, hair 2 colors.

Tall stories. They write an original story and make the booklet.

Creating your own cereal, design it, write on the box!

Learning about the students birthstones.

BIRTHSTONE PROJECT

Winter and Holiday crafts!

2012-12-08T11:24:00.000-08:00

Here are a couple of cute ideas for the children. They take some adult help.

Cute kinder project , older classes can do most of it on their own.

Precut scarves, different hats and circles.

You will need buttons, something for the nose and movable eyes.

For the kindergarden class our teachers aide helps them.

Here is a cute paper plate Santa. You need cotton balls for the beard, google eyes, pom pom's for the nose and cheeks, red paper for the hat(as they cut hats will differ with every child) AND black marker for the mouth. Easy, fast, fun and the children LOVE it!!

LOVE LOVE this project. You paint the Snowman and flicker with the paint to make the snow. On the back of the card you write the verse. In a little baggie you put hot chocolate, kisses, marshmallows and a candy cane as a stirring stick. YUM...fun parent or grandparent gift!!

I hope this will help for some last minute school or homeschool project.
Have a great time!

Winterizing your Garden Part 2- Last Harvest

2012-12-03T08:59:00.000-08:00

Its been a great season for fresh veggies, herbs and fruits. The season is over and now we harvest the last of our garden. In California I still have some herbs and other plants growing. In the colder climates as long as the ground isn't frozen you can still keep some plants.

Herbs still going strong, thyme, rosemary- prostrate and upright, verbena plant is in the center, chives, two types of parsley, sage (perennial)

Carrots don't mind the chill! They get sweeter in the cold. Keep growing until the ground freezes.

Yummy Arugula, grown from seed and comes up every year.

Celery....The white tubes are used to blanch the celery. Protects the celery from too much sun.
For California growers a good winter crop.

Garlic is planted in the fall.

Happy Gardening!

Winterizing your garden! Part 1

2012-11-28T10:17:00.000-08:00

I traveled to Michigan to visit family and went to my sister-in-law, Ann's garden. She has the MOST amazing garden. She was my inspiration to start my two little box garden in Cali.

Our growing climates are vastly different but some of the garden winterizing tips are the same. I will be posting about California winter gardening soon.

FIRST: you must clear out leaves. If you don't mice, rats, other rodents, and unwanted bug will hide in the leaves. You want to try to do this before its time for the snow and frozen ground .

Before

After

Lemon verbena - the leaves can be cut and saved for tea.

After

Before

Step 2: Cut back dead and overgrown branches. Above are the raspberry bushes. They need to be cut back in order to grow next year.

It takes time and work to get everything cleaned up. Its a great time to think, get fresh air and exercise all at once! It looks good when your finished and your garden will be ready for next year.
A few days after this picture was taken the ground was covered with snow.

I am going to posting more garden winterizing tips...subscribe and you will get the post in your email!!

The Busy Classroom!

2012-07-18T22:44:00.001-07:00

I enjoy decorating my room with tons of art work, classwork, and enrichment bulletin boards.
We made the EARTH out of balloons, paper, flour and water. Then we painted them. I had a parent help.

Paper chains help for keeping track of our hundred days.
I also use paper plate crafts. The one you see above, is the SUN!!

Students collect fake money for good behavior, good deeds, great papers, listening, and through many other ways. Then they can go to the class store and "buy" something. This helps 1st graders with using coins and money. Parents donated what students buy. They get excited to buy something before recess every day!

Bulletin boards can focus on the best papers of math, spelling or writing works. I change them out to the most recent work weekly. At the bottom of the board are tissue flowers.

We take a field trip to the tide pools. Students made crabs out of paper plates, star fish with cheerios on them and put them on our board that had sand glued on it. They had a blast making this board. I have shells on the book shelf, they can hear the ocean with the conch shell . After our field trip we put pictures of the students with their parent or guardian who came with them!

We studied homes of people and animals then each student made their own home. We put them on the white board and drew a street in front of the houses.

This Board had measurements on it. Above, watercolor paintings.

Yes...this room is VERY busy, I cover every inch.
School starts early this year, August 14.
Hope you have a restful summer and enjoy each day as a gift !
I count my blessings and am thankful for so much.
