Pared Back Christmas Decor and Ramblings

Pared Back Christmas Decor and Ramblings.

This year my mind has been all over the place, I just haven't been able to settle on any one task, apart from lately making Bella, Homemade dog food! So the thought of getting all the Christmas decorations down from the loft was making me tired just at the thought of it! So we decided to have a pared back christmas and not go, all over the top like we usually do!

We just got down a smaller Christmas tree and a scattering of christmas decorations and made do. We do have a lot of battery candles, which help to make the room look cosy and a trip to Ikea also helped with a few spit spots of red here and there.

It was a very tough and sad year, you see...As back in March Freddy's Dad passed away. He had been suffering from prostrate cancer, when he caught Pneumonia and was taken to Hospital. He was very weak, but managed to get over the Pneumonia and the nurses where making plans for him to come home...But then as Freddy visited him with his Mum the next day, they were told that he had caught Covid! And weren't allowed to see him, but just look through some glass and wave...

He died the very next day...His body was just too weak to fight it off!..........

As you can imagine, it has affected us all so badly. Getting used to not seeing him takes a lot of time and tears. He was such a character (see pic above) So as I said before this year has been very hard for all the family and probably why, if I am honest, that we didn't want to go too over the top with the decor side of things.

This year I have also been part/diagnosed with ADHD, but it looks like I have the ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) but no Hyperactivity! I say 'part' because it is extreemly likely but it is still in discussion...it is also likey that I am on the Autism Spectrum too! which would explain a lot of why it has always been hardwork being myself lol!...and the symptoms seem to be getting worse for me as I am getting older! It might be that now I know what I have, well! I have an excuse don't I! where as when I didn't know what it was...I just got on with it! Oh well Hey ho! That's the way the cookie crumbles I suppose lol!

We have had a lovely Christmas though, (well as lovely as can be expected under the circumstances) Freddy's Mum is staying with us and we all went over to my Mums on Christmas Day, where we stuffed turkey, figgy pudding and chocolates into our mouths until our hearts were content! Well why not!

We also played games and some of them were rather rude 'cards against humanity' for instance was soooo funny and rather shocking! lol! I don't know what version we had but it was definitely X-rated! Playing it with my soon to be 94 year old Mum and Freddy's soon to be 80 year old Mum was hilarious...I haven't laughed so much in such a long time...my belly hurt...there was 8 of us in all and we were all laughing hysterically! and I think the best bit was the way Freddy did a double take everytime his Mum won a round with the best answer (and the rudest!) lol! You have got to give it a go, if you haven't already!

Homemade Dog Food with Chicken, Beef Mince and Veggies

Homemade Dog Food with Chicken, Beef Mince and Veggies.

Lately I have been making Bella, homemade dog food with chicken thighs and Veggies and I have also added in a recipe of beef mince and Veggies and she is really enjoying the meals and loving life at the moment! The reason behind me doing this starts of with a holiday back in October, where Freddy and I went away for a couple of weeks and left her at home with my Daughter Rosie (now 30! can you believe it!). Whilst we were away, Bella caught an infection and was extremely ill, only to be taken to the vets and put on a strict diet of plain Chicken and rice and probiotic drinks!...slowly she got better and by the time we got home she was well again.

I tried giving her her usual food, but all she did was turn her nose up! But when I gave her Plain boiled chicken and rice she loved it! So I started looking into what was healthy for her to eat and how to cook foods that she could enjoy. There is so much information on the internet and so many recipes out there, but I have just stuck to basic recipes, making them up as I go along.

This recipe I just threw together one day, but have had to make it over and over again as it seems to be a combination that she really enjoys.

Recipe 1

Chicken Thighs with Sweet Potato and Veggies

INGREDIENTS
8 Chicken Thighs
2 Sweet Potatos
2 Small Potatos
2 Handfuls of Peas
2 Handfuls of Runner Beans
2 Handfuls of Macaroni
Spray Olive Oil
(4 sprays for each serving. Helps with their bones and coat)

METHOD

Boil the chicken thighs in a saucepan of water for about 20 minutes or until they are cooked through thoroughly. Set them aside to cool for a while and retain some of the water for a gravy.
Wash and peel the potatos and sweet potatos and cook those in a pan of boiling water (no salt).
At this point you could add in the other veggies and the macaroni (see below! what a mess lol!), depending on the size of the pan you have. If you cook them all together the macaroni will take on their flavours, but if you prefer you can cook them all separately!

Once they are all cooked, it's just a case of cutting or shreading the chicken thighs up into small pieces (I add one thigh to a microwave/freezer proof plastic container) and mashing in the Potatos with the juice from the Chicken and then mashing in all the other ingredients to a consitancy, of what you recognise as dog food. I mash in the sweet potatos next and then I cut up the macaroni and veggies (see top picture) and add those in, sometimes I also put in carrots, but Bella has a rather clever way of eating everything up and flicking all the carrots to one side! lol! If I mash these, though, she doesn't know they are there! It's a bit like getting children to eat their veggies, you have got to try and hide them in their food lol!

And Viola...

The picture above shows you different stages of my mixing in all the other ingredients!...it tastes blooming delicious! Well why wouldn't it! al least you know whats in it! You can either freeze these or put them in the fridge ready for serving.

You can bulk the servings up with some plain rice, if you want to be a bit more economical or if you have a larger dog. Bella is a Cavachon so probably would be in the medium size dog catergory. I also stir in about 4-5 sprays of olive oil to each portion, this is extreemely good for dogs as it helps maintain good bones and coat.

The other day I was cooking up some mince to make a shepherds pie and had some left over, so I decided to make Bella another tasty dish! Because variety is the spice of life right!

Recipe 2

Bella's Mince and Spagetti

INGREDIENTS
400g Lean Minced Beef or left overs
1 Portion of Spagetti
3 - 4 Sprigs of Brocolli
Spray Olive Oil
(4-5 sprays for each serving. Helps with their bones and coat)
Plain Rice to bulk up.

METHOD

Cook mince, broccolli and spagetti and mix all the ingredients together, chopping into small palatable pieces.
Add equal portions into plastic containers and add 4-5 sprays of spray olive oil. Stir.
Add other veggies if wanted according to your dogs taste.

Because the fat content is quite high in minced beef, i would definitely bulk this meal up with cooked plain rice...I do this when I am serving it to her. I buy the cheapest microwaveable rice brand and add the rice to the meal with some water and then cook it for 30 seconds in the microwave...

She loves it and I feel like I am giving the absolute best I can afford to her! Okay so making you're own can be a little expensive, but even if you just use left over cuts of meat and buy the cheapest mixed vegetable combo! Rice and Pasta can be so cheap as well! As long you are using the right ingredients, it can all be done according to your budget...it's sure worth a try? don't you think?

...And just to let you know folks!

At the start of the year I was told by Bella's new groomer to always give your dog bottled water!...as tap water has lots of impurities in it, that can mess with your dogs health! Well since giving her only bottled water, all of her brown stains around her eyes and mouth have disappeared! she has gone from looking like this...

Also The Vet and the Groomer have told me that her health and coat have improved considerably since her new diet! Bella will be 11 in January and is in such good health at the moment. No one believes me when I tell them that she is 11!

Are you Still in Love with the Royal Family?

King Charles III and his Coronation is looming up at a pace now and we are beginning to see more and more information on TV about it. We all knew it was coming up, but there wasn't really much talk about it! We have though, had the farce, played out in public, about Harry and the way he has been treated by the Royals over the years! OMG Talk about "Don't air your dirty laundry in Public!!!" Most people won't agree with me, but I think he is a bit of a spoiled brat to tell you the truth and teaming up with Meghan didn't do him any favours at all, as she seems a bit of a narcissist! you have only got to look at her side of the family to see where their marriage is going (she doesn't speak to them does she!)...Can you tell I'm not a fan?

I have never really had a strong opinion on such things, but this subject is making my blood boil...

I have always been a royalist you see...well the Queen was a darling wasn't she...serving The United Kingdom and the Commenwealth for over 70 years, and mostly not putting a foot out of place, everyone respected her didn't they! She was one in a million! And the lovely Phillip...oh I cried my eyes out when he passed away, what a gentleman. So when the Queen departed this earth, I did kind of think that it was nice that they were together again, because the thought of her being without him just broke my heart.

So when Her Majesty passed away, she left Charles £652 million pounds! for which he didn't pay any inheritance tax on!...well that makes my blood boil! because the likes of you and me have to pay it don't we…!

Also the Coronation is costing the taxpayer £100 million!!! Why couldn’t Charles have paid for this himself…it would have gone down so well with the public and might have even won him a few more fans because according to a recent poll 65% of the general public reckon they won’t even be watching it! Freddy told me this morning that apparently that is only the half of it, as the taxpayer will be forking out another £150 million for the security as well!

Also! Charles assended to the thrown and became King back in September last year when Queen Elizabeth passed away...so why do we even need all this Pomp and Ceremony expense...this Country is in crisis for goodness sake! Imagine what £250 million would do for the NHS or for helping people out of poverty!

I think if Charles abdicated and passed the roles onto William and Kate, this would have been a totally different Coronation…there would have been excitement and definitely more support as it would have appealed to the younger generation too…

Charles should have carried on with his conservation work, as he was doing so well with that…I know he has been a King in waiting forever! But he is past retirement age for goodness sake and as for Camilla! Well that was sprung on us wasn’t it! First Queen Consort and then suddenly on the invitation (where was mine! How Rude! lol!) She is being crowned as well! Who knew! Was I the only one not to have realised this!...I still haven’t forgotten about how Princess Diana was treated by them all! So I am not sure that I agree with all of this milarkie!!!!!

And as for the whole debarkle going on in the Royal Family…Prince Andrew for one! What a Liar! Still I won’t go there, but they haven’t been painting a very nice picture of themselves have they…

William and Kate on the other hand have been brilliant, they have been full of dignity and grace and always conducted themselves as you would imagine a future King and Queen to act..none of this “Airing their dirty laundry in Public” I think the Country would be proud to have them as Head of State…It would be a start to putting the ‘Great’ back into Great Britain!

I suppose it's too late to cancel the weekend now!?

Kitting yourself out for the Boot Fair Season

Yes gals and guys the boot sale season is nearly upon us so i thought i would check out the latest must have kit, so that we are prepared for the coming season. The first tool of trade that everyone should own is some kind of portable transport to carry all of your purchases back to the car in.

I am always on the look out for a nice design, but they are always so boring! At the moment I have a red and white Ikea one and that will do for now, but when that dies a death I am going to upcycle my mums old sholley trolley like the one above!

Bags

You will also need a hands free bag and this one above from Accessorize is a really good idea, as it will stop theives from going down your bag - another alternative is a good old cross body bag featured below...

One thing to remember is...don't go too posh with your bag, you are going to the bootfair, not to see the Queen! so by all means wear a nice bag, but a plain one, not a designer all singing all dancing one!...if you do, you will get targeted by the pick pockets (and there are alot of them at the bootfairs these days!) and also the price of the item that you wish to purchase cheaply will be hiked up too! (the stall holder will think you can afford it!)

Clothing

Remember that loose clothing is best...your comfiest jeans or joggers, a vest and a jumper for those cold dewy mornings and always be prepared for rain, so a waterproof lightweight jacket is also a good idea...You don't have to over dress or wear full make-up, you are going out into the fresh air at some silly o'clock time in the morning so just put some nivea and spend the little bit of time that you have making a flask of coffee to take with you.

Also a good idea is to not wear very bold colours that makes you stand out from the crowd, because if people can see where you are and they like what you buy they will follow you around. So dressing in bright colours at the Boofair is the one exception where I would advise you not too!

Footwear

I have ruined so many shoes in the past so my advice here is to wear wellington boots! Now I know this is not possible in the summer months, but when it is, wear them. For the warmer weather, wear an old pair of comfy sandles, remember you will be walking a long way and there is nothing worse that having sore feet and still wanting to check out those bargains.

Other Stuff to Remember

These are the other things that I like to keep in the car when I go back to unload...

Snacks & a Flask of Coffee or Cold Drinks

Burger bars can be so expensive (I would rather spend my pennies on the bargains to be had)

Tissues, Wet Wipes and Lip Balm

These might be best kept in your bag too!...Especially if a trip to the ~~disgusting~~ toilet is called for!

Bubble Wrap and Newspaper

Perfect to wrap your delicates up in so that they don't get broken

My Happy Fashion Style

I have learnt over the years what suits me and what doesn't...for a long time I was covering myself up in oversized lagenlook linen and although I love that look, I also like to have my own individual style too and dress in a vintage way but with a modern twist...vintage dresses, overalls and aprons with turned up jeans and Dr Martens is the look I like and have been known to go out of my way, trawling websites and the country to find my individual look.

Love this look...trousers, long tunic dress and this has a long jacket, but this is where I would add a shorter one!

The Vintage side of Things

Being plus size hasn't helped much with the vintage side of things, as vintage clothes were a lot smaller back in the day than they are now, but over the years I have managed to carve a style for myself that I like and feel comfortable with... I also love the 1940's and 1950's and bright colours...so combining the layering technique, mixing together a bit of vintage with a bit of modern is totally me!

I think as you get older and accept yourself for who you are, finding the right clothes and styles becomes a lot easier...I never kid myself about my size, I am a size 24 and have been for about 10 years now, However I hide it well...and lots of people have told me that I don't look that size...might be because of my height, I am 5ft 9in...but in any case, I know now at my ripe old age, finally!, what I am doing!

Shift dresses are my favourite because my problem area is my stomach...I don't like wearing tops that are too short either, (unless they are layered over a long shift dress) I like them to at least cover my hips and if I am honest...I actually prefer them to be longer than that! I always buy bigger clothes than what I am, especially if it is a top or a dress...I like it to have plenty of room rather than be all clingy and uncomfortable.

I love linen and cotton and try to buy clothes in those materials especially for the spring and summer months, the rest of the year I don't mind a bit of man made fabric, especially Lyocell... that is lovely and silky soft, a very comfortable material to wear indeedy!

Layering yor Clothes

I have also learnt the art of layering, I love to wear leggings or wide trousers (can also be done with a skirt, but I am not a skirt person!) teamed together with a dress or long tunic and a short top over the top! I often see really short tops in the shops and see young ladies wearing them with a skirt or trousers and they look really cute, but if you are on the bigger side or a bit older, the best way to wear them is with this layering technique...

I feel this model is missing her skirt/trousers. This is the perfect layering style, wearing a shorter jumper like this is perfect if only she had remembered her wide linen trousers!

For me she needs her trousers and another shorter jacket or jumper...yes you can also layer in 4 levels depending on how cold it is! and you can strip of during the day as it warms up!

The look above is really cute, ok so she is wearing an apron, but it looks good! see what I mean! Someone get her some shoes!

This is where your Doc Martens can come in handy.

So just remember whatever age you are or however large , tall or small you are, this style always looks cool and will take you through from day into evening. You can mix it up with vintage pieces and modern shift dresses, jeans and cardigans! try and steer clear of any black...go bold with colour that will make you feel like an electic chick all day long.

French Happy Shabby Chic is Back

Yes you heard it here first - French Happy Shabby Chic is back. I tried adding modern pieces to my home from modern shops, to find that I was throwing out trends that I no longer liked quite quickly! which wasn't very ozone friendly...I even tried living with the pared back look and although I liked it for a while...I felt something was missing.

I have been feeling very unhappy lately and even had a mini breakdown a few weeks ago...Yep I hit ground zero! luckily my nearest and dearest gathered around me and picked me up, I know they all love me, but I felt that I was spinning too many plates in my life and I just needed some time for myself...that's something that I never seem to get, being a carer to 3 people is very wearing...sometimes you just want to scream! and my way of coping has been to stay up to silly o'clock so that I can do everything that I want to do for myself as well...

That idea though has thoroughly worn me out, trying to burn the candle at both ends is not a good idea if you want to stay healthly and the fact that I am in denial about having type 2 diabetes and constantly eating lots of sweet treats has just added to my poor state of mind...I do this you see! It's like a recurring circle, I feel depressed, eat something sweet to make myself feel good...immediately feel bad! Then I stay up too late and have to get up early and all this added together just made me hit rock bottom! I know I should go to bed at a reasonable time, but the only time that I don't get disturbed is when everyone is asleep and that time for me is bliss!

So! after thinking for a while and looking around the house, I asked Freddy if he would mind me adding some more of my happy shabby pieces into the mix...I felt I needed to add some more colour into my life, to try to make me feel happy again! I thought I needed a change when we moved to this house, but we have been here 3 years now and I still feel that I haven't got it right! When we first moved in, I tried to do the happy shabby look, but it just didn't work...then we took it all out, and went for a more pared back look and for a while that felt good, well for a while anyway!

Then we added a bit of vintage in with the modern accessories, ferns, gold and quirky modern pieces...and yep I liked it! I really really liked it! The thought of adding anything red! oh no! not me...I am not going back there! I thought to myself! but really! is that really me? and after my mini breakdown, I started thinking what do I really want! when was I at my happiest...and the more I think about it, it was when we were living on the Island and we decorated in a french happy shabby chic style...with rather of a lot of Cath Kidston thrown in (back then Cath's homewares were to die for!) I started to look at old blog posts from that era and my heart skipped a beat!

So out came all our vintage French enameland other old favourites, there was mess everywhere, but it was a beautiful mess! I was supposed to of sold a lot of this stuff, but I couldn't bare to part with my favourites and stored it away, just in case one day I would have this eureka moment and want it all back! Fred stayed out of my way while I played house! I asked him if he minded me changing the look again, as he really liked the modern look, but he said he just wanted me to be happy!

The pictures I have shown you in this post is the progress...ha and the mess!

This time I have incorporated old mixed with quirky, modern and chic...items that make my heart sing. Everything, I look at sparks joy! I keep asking Freddy if he likes it...but he just say's sarcastically 'it's nice'.

But to me...it's my 'happy' and I can't wait to get all the house under it's spell again!...and hopefully if I can get to bed earlier, it might make me feel better in myself so that I can have more time to do the things that I enjoy!

Upcycling My Old Vintage Spice Drawers

Upcycling My Old Vintage Spice Drawers has been a project that I have been meaning to do for ages and I have finally got around to doing it. There are many projects in my craft room that I want to achieve but all I seem to do is write lists, Look at Faire, to see how I’m going to spend my ‘refer a brand’ discount and procrastinate lol! but then that’s me all over…wasting precious time thinking about doing things and never getting around to doing them!

So on this particular day, from somewhere…I got my sh*t together and got creative! I ventured down to my summer house in the garden and got the paint out that I used for the vintage kitchen unit. The paint was still a bit too blue for my liking…I wanted it paler, so I added a bottle of acrylic paint to it and gave it a good old shake and stir and viola…the perfect colour for my spice drawers.

First I must mention that I am a terrible painter! I splosh it on, not really paying much attention to it dripping all over the place…I just want to get the job done quick, so I prepared the table by adding lots of paper to catch the drips. I started by painting the frame first and surprisingly the paint dried rather quickly…it was a thick consistancy but covered the area really well…Had I made a new type of paint!? lol!

I didn’t use the best paintbrush in the world, but it had a painterly effect that I like and looked perfect enough for me! I then painted the drawers…I must say that I found it quite therapeutic, taking time out to do this little job that I had been meaning to do for ages…a few hours to change something and make it look so much better, was so rewarding!

I then had to make labels for all my bits and bobs that I wanted to store in the drawers. I wanted to use my new Cricut Joy Machine, but I can’t seem to get my head around how to use the blooming thing! So I started by cutting out pieces of material and fraying the edges…I finally choosed to use the same pattern, rather can a mix match of all different kinds and decided on an old Cath Kidston print from about 25 years ago…

I tried different fonts on the Cricut machine and realised that the way I was using it, I could of just printed out the words on my printer lol! Anyways you live and you learn I suppose lol! At least I got the hang of how to use the font section in cricut! I then decided to cut out the words in ‘fussy cut style’ so that they would look good against the material.

…And look how they turned out…I am really pleased with them and now everything is tucked away in the right drawer with big fat labels on each one, to remind me of what is inside them.

This may have started me off on a roll now, as I did ask for some green chalk paint for Christmas and I still haven’t used it yet! I might have to do another little Upcycling project soon! Keep your eyes peeled!

Our Cruise to Norway on the Aurora Part 2

Our Cruise to Norway on the Aurora Part 2 continues

…with arriving in Alta, our next stop! There wasn’t much to do there really for us as no trips had been booked, again too expensive and no wheelchair access available. If we had booked the trip a year in advance we would of probably sorted something out for this area as its the most northern destination in the whole of the world! with lots of wonderful scenery and the best place to see the Northern Lights apparently…we had already seen them and taken photo’s but a better picture would have been nice, with a wheelchair trip to see the wonderful scenery but alas not this time. So with all that in mind! what is a couple supposed to do???

Hit the shops!? and boy did we hit the shops! (we always have an excuse to go shopping lol!) It became a bit of a laugh with our friends; how much stuff we used to find to buy, but the Nordic people are so stylish and we just couldn’t help ourselves lol! As it was November all their Christmas Decorations had been put out, so it really got us in the mood!

Norway is very expensive so we bought wisely…there was a few discounted goods here and there and because everything was to our taste we were spoilt for choice and some items just seemed very reasonable, so a few more items were purchased, by this time we had found a trolley to wheel our purchases around the shopping center lol! (How common! lol!) and it was really hot in there and of course we were kitted out for minus 20 something! so all of our coats and jumpers were thrown into the trolley as well…lol! we did look a sight! But we were shopping and having fun…so it was a win win!

When we did venture outside, we saw this amazing spectacle…The Northern Lights Cathedral…isn’t it breathtaking! It was quite icy here and I had to be careful where I was walking. Usually it would have been much colder and covered in thick snow, but global warming and all that has hit everywhere, including the most northern part of the world! which makes you think doesn’t it!

The average day in Alta during November has 6.1 hours of daylight, with sunrise at 9:01 AM and sunset at 3:07 PM.

Back on the Ship again, going through security with all of our shopping bags was quite a saga! I don’t think the ships crew had met anyone like us before…most people got on with one bag of shopping or none at all!…we had quite a few bags of shopping plus snacks plus a few hundred litres of water lol!…they charge for water to take back to your room on the ship! what a cheek! apparently you can drink the tap water from the bathroom, but with my constitution I didn’t want to try it!

We were now on board for a few days sailing…we were going all the way back through the Fjords and past Tromso and to arrive at Stavanger which is a city in southwestern Norway and used to be the capital City many moons ago.

We had a lovely time again, eating, drinking, being entertained, playing quizzes, going to shows etc…Freddy and I wore our masks as much as we could, obviously we couldn’t when we were eating in the restaurants but we were careful and always used hand sanitizer, most people were not being careful this time…they were when we went to Amsterdam, but not on this trip…I think a lot of people now think that COVID19 is over, but we have to be careful because we are vulnerable.

We sailed into Stavanger early evening to a vision of white houses, it was such a cool place and made you feel like you wanted to live in one of them. The place looked magical and we were excited to see what this town was going to be like the next day!

The morning arrived and it was pouring with rain but when has the rain ever stopped us…we’re British remember! We were docked in port (picture below) so it was just a stroll into town. We dived in and out of shops to get dry and the cheapest thing I could find (coz i forgot our brolly!) was a couple of plastic poncho’s…for about £3.00 each! cheap for Norway! I quickly put one on Freddy and the other around his wheelchair, we didn’t want it ‘shortening out’ by getting wet…if his wheels don’t work then we are stuck!

‘Broken Column’ (2003) by Antony Gormley (b. 1950) is Stavanger Art Museum’s largest work of art. It consists of 23 identical rusty steel sculptures mounted outdoors and indoors in public and private places in the city. The 1,95-metre-tall sculptures are based on a cast of the artist’s own body.

As soon as we walked around to this part of the dock, we instantly wanted our pictures taken with this Antony Gormley Statue. It was nice that we could be so close to this wonderful piece of art, unlike back at home in the Turner Gallery, Margate! When we visited there, It’s built in such a way that you can only view the Gormley Statue in the Sea if you are standing! which is pretty Pants! if you are in a wheelchair! still that’s a whole other story!

This town…well I could definitely live here…Its so clean, with lovely helpful people and lots of lovely shops!

There was lots of things to tempt us, but everything was soooo expensive…it was nice to look and I took lots of pictures of all the delights…Then we got a bit lost and started to walk back to where we started only to bump into our friends Chris and Mark…Chris informed us that she had found a charity shop in a department store..I don’t know how they found it! they were trying to get out of the rain apparently! Personally I think they had Top Secret Intelligence! lol!…anyways they told us where to go, and to make sure we got there and find it, they walked with us and pointed across the street to the doorway!

We walked in and travelled up 3 floors in the lift, at this point I thought…were they joking!? only to arrive on the 3rd floor to find this…It was like all our birthdays had come at once lol!

There was such an array of beautiful homewares and all so stylish, apparently it had only been open a few days so all the best things were still there! I could of bought so much more, the furniture was beautiful and everything was so cheap. There was also a separate shop which just sold Christmas decor and decorations…we bought quite a few of those as you probably read about over HERE

And in true Happy House Tradition we bought the whole shop! lol! Well nearly!…You can imagine what the ships crew said about us can’t you! getting on board with twice as many bags as last time didn’t go down too well! we were the talk of the town once again…Our friend Chris and Mark was very good and only bought a couple of bits…but us on the other hand! well need I say more!

Then it was back on board again ready to sail home…

This trip to Norway was amazing and I want to thank my Mum for treating us to it. I also want to thank the lovely people we met on board, they really helped to make our holiday special…will we go back to Norway? I don’t know because we always like to go somewhere different, each time we go away. I would definitely like to go back to Stavanger though…so perhaps one-day, if we win the Lottery! x

Our Cruise to Norway on the Aurora

Our Cruise to Norway on the Aurora was just the best holiday that we have had in a long time!...we had already been on a demi run to Amsterdam to see how cruising would work for us, so we knew that the ship was very wheelchair friendly! It was also our 35th Wedding Anniversary Present from my Mum...Isn't she wonderful! She knows what a tough time we have had of it over the years and decided to treat us! So being very clever with our budget, we set about finding bargain clothes and accessories for this rather glitzy cruise! We trawled Charity shops and Boot Sales for bargain pieces as I had nothing really glitzy...I have dresses but nothing sequinny! It was quite fun actually and I had a big trying on session a few days before the cruise with Rosie telling me what suited me and what didn't! Of course I took far too many clothes with me! But then don't we all!

On the second night there was a fancy dress Halloween Party and we really went to town! Freddy decorated his wheelchair with Poundshop accessories and wore half price 'Day of the Dead' clothes and accessories from our outlet center in Chatham...lot's of bargains over there! I wore my Voodoo Vixen dress that I have had for years now! Ever since I was nominated in the first ever Amara Blog awards...Do you remember? Voodoo Vixen was kind enough to gift me this beautiful dress especially for the occassion!

I really dressed it up with Halloween accessories and the skeletal body part Freddy purchased for 50p from a Charity shop, it was actually part of a kids top, so I cut the T-shirt material away and fastened it with safety pins to the front of my dress! My hair was my own off course lol!...we did look good together and lots of people commented how brilliant we looked...thing is we couldn't eat in the 'Posh' dining room, so we had to eat in the canteen and not as many people as we thought had made the effort either!...There was a fancy dress parade in the Carmen Bar and oh I did feel rather shy! but I held Freddy's hand and we all paraded around together, there was about 50 of us that took part and we knew they was all from our clan because we had all dressed up and had made the effort!

As luck would have it Freddy won first prize! Yay! and here he is showing off his bottle of red wine and a P & O Keyring lol! Mind how they go with the Prize ay! lol! but it was the taking part that counted! we had a brilliant time that night!

That night as we sailed along the Fjords, I slept with the curtains and one eye open, hoping to see the Northern Lights...I could see a grey type shape and thought it had a tinge of green to it and shot up with my phone and took this lovely picture...a bit blurry but still blooming lovely...

As we sailed and had fun eating, drinking and partying, we finally arrived in Andalsnes...

And How Breathtaking the view was from our balcony...

As we booked only 6 weeks before the Cruise set sail for Norway, we weren't able to get on any tours (they were soooo expensive in the first place!) So we just had a walk around the town...there was a cable car ride, which was about £120 for the two of us...if I had of done my homework about this place, I might have paid that, but at the time and as the town was quite small, we just decided to have a scout about...

I'd fallen in Love with those Primark coloured soled boots and when I went back to buy them, they didn't even have them in stock in Chatham! (I had seen them in Southampton when we went on the Amsterdam Cruise and had hesistated!) so luckily I was able to pick up a pair in TK Maxx for £18.00, they matched my lagenlook top perfectly and I wore pink accessories to match my Orla Kiely, Chrimbo Pressie, Bag...

We had a lovely day there, but there wasn't a lot to do, so by 3pm we were back on the ship having a late lunch and then back to our room where we had an afternoon nap...yes were getting old lol!

We then had a few days sailing...going along the Fjords was breathtaking...lots of sites and mountain ranges to look at...by this time Freddy had enrolled himself into a Bridge Class and I would sit in the Library reading...I can't tell you what books as these days I can't concentrate on one in particular, but I loved sitting there looking out to sea, or sitting on the promenade wrapped up warm...We met some lovely people on the ship that we met up with for drinks and musical quizes during the day and would often meet up for a show and drinks in the evening...they really did help to make this cruise a special one...

Our next stop was Tromso

Years ago we took our kids to Lapland and had a blooming fun time doing all the things that you could possibly want to do in the snow...Husky Sledding rides, Reindeer sledding and Snowmobile rides, so luckily we had already done that kind of thing...that was all crossed off our list so we wanted to do something different...

We had tried booking some trips for here onboard the ship, but there was no wheelchair accessible trips available !!!!! I know sickening isn't it! We wanted to book, to go on the Cable Cars, up the side of the mountains, so we decided to go it alone!...you can do that peeps...the excursions are so expensive, a couple of hundred pounds each and although I didn't have a clue on how we was going to get there...we had to try...

We were able to get a wheelchair accessible minibus the the town centre and once everyone got off we asked the Driver if he knew how we could get to the cable car excursion...he tried explaining, but it was difficult to understand, so in the end he took us there...he was such a lovely guy, it wasn't far in the minibus but would of took a long time for me to walk and I don't think I would of had the energy!

Once we arrived, we thanked him and treated him, I always believe in treating people that help you out...this guy didn't have to drive us all the way there, so we gave him £20.00 nothing in comparison to the money that we have saved compared to the hundreds of pounds that P & O was going to charge us! The cable car was all set up for wheelchair users, you just had to go around the back and there was a platform for us to wait where the next car along picked us up allowing us to get on first and picked up the other folk after...the view above is a piccy of our trip up there...(by the way the tickets for the cable car worked out at about £30 each...still so much cheaper than the P & O excursion!

We made it up there...all on our own! Grand total of £80...for the both of us! Here are the pictures to prove it lol!

The journey back to Tromso town centre was pretty stress free as well...We got a bus back! Yes their buses are all kitted up for wheelchairs, which is cool because it makes you feel as normal as normal can be! Norway is totally kitted up for accessibility everywhere...its such a cool place to visit. The bus took us through the suburbs and past the Artic Cathedral all the way to the town center and no charge! how about that!

We arrived back to town in one piece and hit the shops, having our pictures taken with a few trolls along the way...

As soon as nightfall hit, we decided to get the minibus back to the ship...the journey was a trip in itself...only to travel back through the underground road tunnels and roundabouts...have a watch HERE Tom explains it so well

Back on board the ship for more food and entertainment as we sail away for a few days...and on our way to Alta

After Christmas Chill Out at the Happy House

After Christmas Chill Out at the Happy House

Hi there folks, Christmas day has come and gone and now it's time for a well earned Chill Out at the Happy House! Yes once again it was very busy for me! This year you see, I cooked the dinner around my Mum's house, as she is now bed bound; just for the three of us though...Freddy, Mum and Myself! Mum doesn't have much of an appetite anymore, but I still made a big dinner! Much to Bella's delight, because she got plenty of left overs!

The little chubby angel and the metal plate on the table, along with the paper star light are all purchases from the Norway Charity Shop.

I recently purchased a ramp for her front door so that Freddy can now visit her in his wheelchair...infact he has been visiting her with me quite a lot lately, since i bought it and it melts my heart to see him holding her hand and telling her how much he loves her and how pretty she is. She has carers now and we go and see her every other day for a few hours, we watch films and have a catch up on who has rang her recently and who hasn't bothered lol! She still has a wonderful sense of humour even though, now her body is giving up...I love her so much and it's so difficult seeing her deteriorating in front of my eyes.

Most of the items on the grey table in the front of the picture are from the Norway Charity shop...the white china wee willie winky candle holder, the Santa on ski's, the glass bon bon dishes, the pink candleabra and the JUL wooden sign

As as soon as I got to Mum's, I decided to move the furniture around including her bed which I moved over a bit to make space for some more chairs and now there is more room for Freddy to turn around and for people to sit down, it was really quite cramped before, but I wished I had sorted that out before I got there, as I was quite whacked out by the time Rosie and her Fiance and Darryl and his Girlfriend arrived.

As Usual I was sitting on a hard kitchen Chair! What is it with youngsters these days! Let us Oldies sit on the comfy chairs please guys! We have achy limbs! We used to let our Mum's sit on the comfy chairs when we were younger! Where did I go wrong lol!

So here again I am including a few pictures from our Living room, showing you our Christmas decorations...I am growing tired of them now though, so I don't think it will be long before we take them down! I love New Year... A Fresh start, New beginnings and all that! And for me the same old New years resolutions! I never promise myself that I am going to loose weight as that always ends by the second week in January lol!

Behind my chair, (in the previous and above picture) you might be able to see lots of furry things on the floor!... they are actually Bella's toys! every time she gets one out, the Christmas tree sways and jingles...it's surprising that it hasn't fallen down already! :) x

But I do want to travel more, as you know we did a bit this year HERE and my soon to blog about trip to Norway in November, that was brilliant too! But travelling costs money and we don't have much of that, so one of my New Years Resolutions might have to be a get rich quick scheme lol! If anyone knows of any please drop me the idea on a postcard ;)

The above picture has been taken in my hallway, for which there are few goodies from the Norway Charity shop...The two metal tealight buckets and the white china candle pedestals...aren't they divine! I don't think I have shown you my hall before...still that can be another blog post :)!

It took us quite a while to get settled in this house and it is ever changing as always, the old prophecy of one thing in and one thing out has gone out of the window, as the old things that I love, I just can't bare to part with! but I am going to have to purge some things soon, especially from my craft room as that is the smallest room in the house (apart from the little girls room!) but has the most in it! Watch this space!

So ill say goodbye for now and hope that you all have a wonderful New Years Eve, whatever you are going to be doing and in the New Year i'll bring you that promised 'Cruise to Norway post' that I have been promising.

What to do in the Garden during the Winter Months

There is a lot you can do in the garden during the winter months including protecting the grass, planting new seeds, and growing vegetables in the greenhouse. If you have some free time this winter, why not get out into the garden and prepare the ground or plant some bulbs for the spring months?

Clear the Snow

Snow looks lovely from inside the house, but unless you clear it from the garden, it can ruin your lawn come springtime. The snow and ice compact the grass blades and leaves; it also makes the soil hard and cracked, but clearing the snow is one of the best ways to protect the garden.

As well as clearing the snow and ice from the lawn, you need to clear it from the path as well. When you walk on a frozen lawn, you damage, or break, the grass blades and need to plant some new grass. After clearing the pathways, put down some salt or grit to encourage usage.

Install a Greenhouse

How would you like to grow your own fruits and vegetables this year? With food prices rising and people trying to live more sustainable lifestyles, it’s time to install a greenhouse and learn some of the tricks of the trade. Find qualitygreenhouses for sale and grab yourself a bargain.

Polish the Tools

Prune Plants

If you want your deciduous plants to grow healthy and strong, you need to prune them quite regularly. Pruning the plants helps to direct nutrients to key areas of the plant, supporting growth. One of the best times to prune plants is in the winter when there are fewer leaves.

With no leaves or buds on the branches, you can see what you’re doing more easily, making pruning more accurate and effective. Pruning plants require a pruning tool and some knowledge of the plant and thepruning process. It’s best to wait for a sunny day to prune your plants.

Keep a Journal

Keeping a healthy and prosperous garden is all about planning - like any other aspect of life - so make sure you have a journal to write in and keep track of the plants, shrubs, and bulbs you plant throughout the winter season. Tracking your plants improves their quality and the yield.

In your journal, you can track the blub types; you can also track the location, the bloom time, the past performance, the source, and any pest problems you may encounter. The more you know about your plants, the better you can make adaptions and changes to encourage better results.

Check the Seeds

Before you plant your winter seeds, you need to check them to make sure they are still active. The last thing you need is to plant some winter seeds and get zero results. The good news is that it’s quite easy to check your seeds for quality; all you need is a damp paper towel for them.

Take the old seeds and wrap them in a damp paper towel. Keep the paper towel moist and damp for about a week to allow germination to take place; this should take about a week. If most of the seeds sprout, it should be fine; less than half, and you need to replace the seeds.

Consider the Birds

Remember, a garden is a little ecosystem, and everything in it matters and plays a part. If you want to maintain a healthy garden, you need to cultivate areas for the birds and insects to thrive. Birds help the garden thrive by eating the berries and spreading them in the garden to seed.

A Little Drop of Happy Christmas Cheer

I thought I would bring you a Little Drop of Happy Christmas Cheer, Freddy and I have been putting up Christmas decorations since we got back from Norway, (I will blog about that soon) You see we found a couple of Charity shops whilst we were there, courtesy of our lovely friends that we met on holiday Christine and Mark. They actually found the shops when we were visiting Stavanger, which was the last part of our trip to Norway!...And we were so grateful to them, because they had found two charity shops, one dedicated completely to Christmas and the other for homewares etc.

They had both been very good and had only bought a couple of Gonks...us on the other hand went completely and utterly over the top! not thinking at all how we were going to get everything home with us! But it has never stopped us before and I don't think it will ever, because Freddy and I love a bit of shopping, especiallysecond hand shopping! Just look at our decor! We are maximilists and proud!

Everything in Norway was expensive, so it was a breath of fresh air buying things in these two shops. The prices were really low, kind of like what our charity shops used to be like before Ebay, so it wasn't really a surprise when our bill came to £139.00! Lol! and by the time everything was packed in paper and shoved into bags (14 bags to be exact!) Freddy's wheelchair was loaded up beyond belief! lol! Trust us! I was carrying quite a few bags as well, but what a brilliant time we had...we were like kids in a candy shop...the Norwegians really do have good taste and the Charity shop had not long been open, so they had saved up all their best things....it was just brilliant!

So you will see quite a lot of bits and pieces in my pictures here from the Norwegian Charity shop. We did decide at first to not bother getting our decorations down from the loft this year...so a sparse Nordic style Christmas tree was purchased and erected...but it is not my favourite tree that we have ever had and now I wish that I had put up mylovely tree that we used last year...but you live and you learn don't you!

We did get more things down from the loft in the end thanks to Jamie, Rosie's Fiance, He really is so caring and helpful, I really do not know what I would do without him. Nothing is any trouble and he goes out of his way to help us...what with me and my problems and Freddy in his wheelchair and what with his heart problems and the like we really do need someone to help us occasionally and Jamie always comes to our rescue...Rosie has definitely found a good guy there and we all love him like one of our own...

We are also a lover of those fake candles, they are so much safer than real ones, as I am so clumsy and would definitely have had an accident by now if they were real by setting a few of my jumpers and hair alight! EeK! They look so real don't they and run on batteries, we have bought quite a few of those and the ones we bought in Norway, go off after a few hours which is brilliant as if you are the last to go to bed like me, you can spend a few hours just turning all the lights out lol!

That's all for now folks, I have more pictures to show you but I am going to save those until I have written my post about our holiday to Norway, I hope you are all well and keeping warm in this rather Freezing cold snap...My feet seem to be freezing all the time I just can't get them warm no matter what I try! A Happy Holiday Cruise to Amsterdam

A Happy Holiday Cruise to Amsterdam...

After what happened last year with Freddy's health and also finding out that a few of our friends had passed away unexpectedly we decided that you have got to live for today rather than wait until tomorrow...so we decided to bite the bullet and go on holiday. A few years ago we ventured to Center Parcs for a week and that was very Disabled/wheelchair friendly, Freddy was able to get into the swimming pool with the help of a pool guy and waterproof wheelchair. So we wanted something like that but abroad! Sounds so easy doesn't it! but when you are travelling with a Disability and you need a wheelchair, you don't really have a lot of options unless you want to spend a hell of a lot of money! And that we haven't got!...we needed something on a budget. So we started looking in brochures but we just went round and round in circles.

Eventually we ended up in Cruise territory! We have been on them before, when the kids were little and Freddy was walking, but could it be the answer for us now? We joined the P & O FaceBook group and Fred asked lots of questions and we thought rather than waste a lot more time, to just bite the bullett and book a mini cruise, like a little taster menu to see if it would be okay for us...we booked online through Iglu Cruises and was able to get the last inside Disabled Accessible cabin on The Aurora, Destined for Amsterdam, What a RESULT!

Check it out above! We couldn't believe how roomy it was..apart from the open shut kamikarzee remote control door from hell! that either locked you inside the cabin or outside without you're consent lol! It was fanbloomingtastic!

After a lot of Homework...

We found out that P & O was the best company to go with if you were disabled and because we loveAmsterdam anyway, we thought we might as well give it a try and what a joy it was preparing for a holiday again, it's part of the fun isn't it and of course to try and do it all on a budget, well that was right up my street! I love finding bargains (don't we all!)...I love the buying but not so much the ironing and the packing! And boy did I take too much! Yes of course I did even though it was only for 4 nights!...Also this trip worked out a little cheaper than a 4 night holiday to Center Parks! But this Cruise was full Board! (Alcoholic drinks not included Hic!)

This was us leaving the port of Southampton destined for Amsterdam, sitting out on the deck watching the sites go by was lovely...I love that about cruising, you can just be doing your own thing, getting on with different activities on the ship and next minute you have arrived at another destination...it just seems the perfect way to travel for me!

The wonderful food on board really makes it special too, no self catering here! Thing is you can get used to all this and we found out that some people live on board and just float around to different destinations all year...How lovely! That's life isn't it!

Kitted out for Disabled People

The ship was really kitted out for Disabled (Super Humans) People and the staff made it their priority to ask if you needed any help when you might have needed it, at the self service dining area etc! Freddy was able to get into the pool via a chair hoist (pictured below)...It was quite a spectacle for everyone actually and that's how we made so many friends, because people would approach us and say 'I saw you using the hoist to get into the pool! How was it?' There were quite a few wheelchair users on the ship and the people we met all told him how brave he was to use it! and that they felt too embarrassed to use it themselves! Which is a shame because they would have all had a great time together there!

We didn't end up going on our happy cruise to Amsterdam in the end because there was Port Works apparently, so to waste a bit of time we had another 'At Sea' day which was quite funny because apparently we sailed around The Isle of Wight twice! but on a plus side we all got £50 each 'on board spend' to soften the blow...We were okay about this, as we were going for the ships experience anyway and had already been to Amsterdam quite a few times before when we used to buy jewellery for our shop that we owned many moons ago inRochester High Street!

We stopped off in Blankenberge

We did however stop off inBlankenberge, Belgium, which was a chance to take in some different scenery and visit a shop or two or three or four! This was a lovely little shopping area which was on the coast, but it was so windy and on the trail of trying to find an Antique Shop (Fred's Idea!) we ended up separated, windswept and somehow...Goodness knows how! Freddy ended up on the beach and stuck in the sand! [Rolling eye face lol!] Don't ask! Luckily he was rescued to safety by some people that were on our ship! and we were able to find each other again Phew! That was a lucky escape to what could have been a complete and utter dIsAsTeR!

We had such a good time, there were plenty of things to do on the ship that kept us entertained and the evenings were excellent too...shows to see which were kitted out so that Freddy and I could sit together. Live music and quizzes to be attended, craft sessions and talks... Well the entertainment on board was brilliant.

We met a couple from Newcastle called Robbie and Linda, Robbie is also a wheelchair user and we all had so much in common. We had been through similar experiences, we really did hit it off and all got along so well. They really did help make ourholiday so special...And it's funny isn't it how fate plays a part in why you are meant to meet certain people, but when we were talking, we found out that their Wedding Anniversary was on the same day as ours...10th October, we had been married for 35 years and they had been married for 33 years! It's such a small world isn't it!

When we got home, we enjoyed our mini break to Amsterdam so much lol! That we decided to book another Cruise, this time to Norway and the Fjords as my Mum and Freddy's Mum and Dad said that they would pay for it, for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. How lucky are we!

We have already been on that cruise and I will blog about it as soon as I can, but just know that we had afabulous time cruising on board The Aurora and have found it to be the perfect way to travel, for us...

We plan to save up and go again in the New Year, we were thinking of Canada? There is a cruise that takes in New York and Canada...wouldn't that be blooming fantastic! but we have got to price it out as it seems too expensive for us at the moment...but whatever we do, we will definitely be going on a cruise somewhere, even if we try to get to Amsterdam again!

I thought I would show you what I am in Love with this week...well we all do it don't we! Got a spare 5 minutes? let's go shopping online to see what might tempt our hard earnt cash! Well these are the things that I have been looking at this week so I thought I would share with you and perhaps you could let me know your favourites too!

I haven't liked hardly any of the latest Cath Kidston designs over the last few years... for me it's gone all Pete Tong [wrong] lol! New designers haven't helped much either. The prints and styles look more like Laura Ashley and I think they are trying too hard to be 'on trend' which doesn't fit in with the ethos of Cath's individual look...I know she no longer owns the Company and that's probably the reason why! but I can't see this brand lasting much longer...So with all that said I wasn't able to ignore the re-release of the old Antique Rose Wallpaper [featured above] Yes I went and purchased 6 rolls of the stuff...I love it in this Navy...thing is though I bought it at the start of the year and still haven't got around to hanging it in my bedroom! [sigh!]

You can't beat a black and white monoprint and just look at this wonderful apron from marimekko! This famous poppy pattern Unikko was born in 1964 in a time when the design house’s collections featured mostly abstract prints. Designer Maija Isola wanted to create something interesting from this organic theme and designed an entire range of floral prints. Today, the iconic flower represents creativity...and I just love it. Having to go elsewhere for my floral prints these days, I couldn't think of a better brand [apart from Orla Kiely shhhh!] the only thing is, I would never want to get it dirty! Another piece of clothing to hang along a coat hook! lol!

Isn't this tattoo incredible!...and if I told you it was a temporary tattoo would you believe me? Ideal for a special occassion, a night out with the gals or to try before you go the whole hog and get yourself tattoo'ed for Life!...This shop on Etsy has been a favourite of mine for a while and I just had to share with all of you...please go check her out...

Now this is something so cute and special...This Company lets you send a picture to them and then they create a custom portrait for which you can personalise yourself, there is a watercolour option [like the picture above] or there is a Disney option, plus some other styles. After you have made your choices they send the file to you via email so that you can print in any size you want! How clever is that...The designs are gorgeous...I will definitely be purchasing a print like the one above of Freddy and I especially as we have just celebrated our 35 year Wedding Anniversary! Congrats to us Eh!

Columbia Road meets Cath Kidston

Last Sunday we went to Columbia Road Flower Market…we had been meaning to take our friends Sue and Kevin to Cath Kidston for ages, ever since Sue first set eyes on our decoration at home, she wanted us to take them there, you can’t help falling in love with all those delightful pastel mixes of boho 1950’s chic now can you!….so we decided to make a day of it and take in some other sites too, starting with Columbia Road flower market.

Above is the living room, that she loves, and below is part of our dresser….

Now if you are in the ‘know’ this flower market is the place to ‘go’….if you want cheap good quality plants, set in the East End of London, this place is a treasure trove destination that will make your heart skip a beat!….it is the perfect place to thrift, as entwined either side of the main market itself are side streets that carry an abundance of second hand nik naks, new designer goods and expensive antiques….this place is a thrifters paradise! N.B Bring Plenty of money or your sugar daddy..because you will want to Spend Spend Spend!

Columbia Road Market above and below……

The side streets were packed with people, but still you were able to amble around at your leisure…I love looking around places like this, and the fun thing is that when you take your Nikon camera with you, the general public think you might be a famous photographer/blogger and are very polite.

Check out these side stalls, look at that Fab tapestry covered chair and the eccentric Graham Nortonesque lamp shade!….Geraniums….red & white stripe and duck egg blue what more can a girl ask for!

Look at this stall – the girl that owned this, has definitely got taste!…Freddy wanted to buy everything – it does look rather home from home…he didn’t want me to add any pictures of him in this pic or indeed any pics as he was having a rather ‘bad belly day’ you know the sort…a result of too much wine the night before!….

All this wondering around looking at the beautiful plants and shops was making Kevin very very hungry and there was many places to get something lovely to eat, so Kevin ceased his opportunity….Here!

This shop was along the main street, it sold vintage clothing with plenty of yummy new clothing, trinkets and jewellery….look at the fab metalwork on the front of the shop and the vintage blue and white dresses….fantastic!…we also visited a shop called Treacle, which is a Tea & Cupcake-aholics paradise and sooooo Vintagely trendy…..another must visit place! (the shop is no longer there)

…..we then went back to the car, it was getting warmer by then and do you know what, I have come to a conclusion that whenever I wear my black and white floral tunic which I may add is made from Viscose! it turns out to be a warm day, you see I usually wear linen, through every season actually, I love the natural feel and the way it lets your skin breath, I wear it through the winter and summer and yet when I wear my ‘Viscose’ tunic (which I love! – Fred hates it!) the sun shines – sods law that, isn’t it! anyway moving on!

We haven’t had many warm days this year, just rain, rain, rain! perhaps I should order a lorry load of floral tunics!…I’d make a mint!

Next stop Spittlefields Market, this is an art and craft market and I was pleasantly surprised at the surrounding area, years ago this part of the East End was a bit of a dump, but the renovations that have taken place, well we were really surprised! theres bars and cafes, and Notting Hill style shops and hardly any graffiti, just a few Banksy’s here and there which is very trendy for this day and age, you feel quite privileged to see one actually.

Years ago I used to make Re-style clothing, (the brand was called Edith & Bella) which is taking second hand clothing and re-styling it into something else, I used to applique lace and vintage material adornments to each garment making every piece a one off…..so I couldn’t resist taking this picture (or rather making Fred take this picture!) of these wicked re-styled garments in the market….There is sooo much talent in this market – you have to visit it. Whoops I sound like I am an advocate for the British Tourist Board there, don’t I!

This guy had real talent….any designers out there….I would definitely snap him up if I were you!….Next we decided to go to Cath’s, as we could contain ourselves no longer, well Sue and I couldn’t contain ourselves no longer, Kev was a bit worried as to how much Sue was going to spend…..We sped off to the Kings Road, home of the Punks that used to live there in the 1980’s, it is rather disheartening to see that no longer, the unusual and funky shops are there anymore, they have long gone – although if you amble along further up the road heading towards Hammersmith, there are more eclectic and quirky shops like, Noah, Graham Greener and English Eccentrics (I must just say, we were in there last week (EE) and who should be in front of us but Felicity Kendall and she looks absolutely fantastic – I wish I knew what cream she is using!)

We hot footed it into cath’s and Sue kept putting things onto the counter, she decided on a red star zipped holdall, knitting bag (she is teaching me to crochet at the moment!) a red strawberry breakfast set , oven gloves, an oil cloth table cloth and a tea towel – I feel us Cath Kidston fans should give her a round of applause for her first time, I was really proud of her, still its not that difficult is it and off course Fred and I couldn’t resist a few bits too….(I’ll show you in another post what we bought and how we have made use of it!)…

We couldn’t resist jumping in the car and tearing round to Cath’s other shop in Clarendon Cross as we were in the area, on the way round we passed a Wine Bar and as I looked round I could of sworn that Jennifer Aniston was sitting by the window, as we sped passed I mentioned the fact, so Fred drove around the block and I braced myself with the camera to take a paparazzi shot of a lifetime….finally a chance to make my fortune!….as we drove along there was a Fire engine with hunky firemen (they are always hunky aren’t they!) so Sue asked me to take a picture of them…..well they were making me laugh so much, I hadn’t turned the camera on and by the time I did! this is the pic that I took!

No firemen in sight!…..what a shambles – I usually take fab pictures…..well we were in fits of laughter…..only for Fred to stall the car outside of the Wine Bar where I had spotted Jennifer Aniston.….imagine the scene crazy people in a car in fits of laughter only for me to take the picture as husband stalls car and then only…

…for the flash to completely bounce off the window, which you can’t see at the moment, but afterwards as I peered through the lens everyone from the cafe looks in my direction, for which we are still in fits of laughter, Fred can’t start the car and it seems like an eternity before he eventually kangaroo’s the car down the road……How embarrassing!….we were crying with laughter….I must just say at this point, I am never going to take up photography as a living and sorry Jennifer if you have had double vision this week!….it was Me!

We finally arrived at our final destination, where we politely bought some material for Sue to make some cushions, here I am, I have my lovely Non linen floral warm tunic on! We had a lovely day and will be repeating it again soon….of course I’ll keep you posted…

UPDATE July 2022

My memories of this day still makes me smile…although we do not see Sue and Kevin anymore, I hope wherever they are and whatever they are doing, that they are well and happy.

Also my feelings have changed completely for Cath Kidston! I hardly like anything these days! I have put a few links on this page for you to have a look to see what you think! I used to love that place, but since Cath sold the Company I haven’t been impressed…I loved the homewares, but all they seem to concentrate on is the bags and clothing and that makes me sad!

I still check them out to see if they are releasing a new collection of something that I like…but I haven’t bought anything, apart from some wallpaper for years! It was good while it lasted 🙂

Get Your Garden Ready For Summer

When it comes to the summertime, everyone wants to be out enjoying the weather. Not everyone has a garden so you can venture out to the park or do something else, but for those lucky enough to have a garden, it could be time to take a look at preparing it for summer. There is nothing worse than summer coming up and you realise your garden is in no state to relax in then you have to sort it out in the hot weather, which can be hard work.

If you are looking to prepare your garden for the summer time and make sure you have a place to relax and unwind when the warm weather comes knocking. Then hopefully these few tips will help you to get your garden ready for your summer relaxation.

Clean up the garden

The best place to get started when it comes to the garden is giving it a spruce up. Over the year your garden can get messy, whether that be debris blown by wind or overgrown shrubs and bushes there are a few things to sort out. If you have a patio then make sure you are sweeping it and pressure washing it where needed. If you have big bushes (hahaha pardon the pun!) then make sure to trim them back and stop them overcrowding, also you need to try and cut your grass if you have it, this should be done weekly if it is fast growing. As Well as cleaning up the garden you also need to pay attention to your garden furniture, this can get dirty and wet over the winter and spring time so make sure to get them cleaned up. You can also look to clean up your outdoor cushions, I've recently just popped mine in the washing machine and not all, but most of the dirt has come out! they look fresh anyway and will last another summer no doubt!

Why not invest in a good bbq and firepit?

When people think of summertime then it usually involves a beach, a barbecue and drinks with friends. That is why investing in a great barbecue for the garden and a fireplace built in or to go with it, is a great way to pimp up your summers. If you enjoy spending days and evenings outside with friends or family having a drink and some great food then this is definitely something to think about. Investing in a good bbq will mean you can cook and cater to your meal desires and if you have a lovely fire pit you can then spend the evenings under the stairs without getting too cold and roasting up some marshmallows. Fire pits give that natural camping and wilderness vibe which is great when spending time with friends and loved ones.

Change your gardens look and layout

Another way to help change up your garden for summer is to have a change around. It can be easy to get bored of your garden after having it the same way year after year, you also may want to add some things to your garden like a hot tub (a bit pricey to run though!) or more garden furniture so you need to make room. There are a few things you can do to update your garden, you can change from a patio to a deck or if you have neither add one in to make it easier to have furniture without damaging the grass. Also if you have lots of plants and shrubs then it may be worth taking some out if you are looking to make more room for other things. If you have the room then you could look to install a pool or just a small plunge pool which is a great way to spend the day cooling off or even using it for exercise. Also with a pool you can use it in the autumn winter too however it could be a little colder unless you have it heated. Changing the layout to your garden is not always a small easy task so if you are looking at big changes but you are not sure how to go about it then look to get in a professional, who can help you get it perfect.

Vintage Material a Bunny and two Royal Guards

I was going to call this post ‘Happy New Finds’ until I wrote the titles of each new picture! Vintage Material a Bunny and two Royal Guards seemed so apt for the fourth picture down and it made me laugh so I thought well why not! It sounds so much more interesting anyway and it might make you laugh too!

So here we are again! Another post from lil old me! Last month was such a hectic time, but I am slowly getting back into a routine…my sleeping pattern is still all over the place and I long to go to bed at a decent time in the evening like everyone else! But I think I’ve got to stop beating myself up about it and realise that if I have’nt changed now, I am never going too!

Happy Finds

So here we are with some more of my Happy Finds. Last summer Freddy and I visited quite a few bootsales and although my heart wasn’t in it much, I did buy a few things that caught my eye! Also we love visiting charity shops in our surrounding towns and sometimes you can find some nice things, but so many people are looking now and also the prices have gone up a lot in these shops…some of them, I am sure, they think, they are selling Rocking Horse Sh*T LOL!

Pick Up a Bargain

But Occassionally you can pick up a bargain and sometimes it might not be a bargain, but its just something that you love and you just have to have it!
It’s just so much fun having a look around second hand shops and vintage markets…buying something so much more interesting with a past and a bit of history behind it is so much more rewarding don’t you think?

Anyway, what do you think of my new happy finds?

Some of my new finds are pictured with old things that you have probably seen before, but I do love an old vintage Toy, be it a stuffed or wooden variety, this yellow duck on wheels (I don’t think it has much age to it!) but i just fell in ove with it the minute I saw it…I bet you know that feeling don’t you…

Vintage Coronation Magazines

I don’t know whether you know but my Freddy is a collage artist and he loves collecting paper of all kinds, old books, magazines, Journals etc and last year we came across a lot of old Coronation Magazines, it was just before he had to go into hospital. Then just before Christmas, I saw one of his instagram posts with pictures of Queen Mary cut up! MON DIEU I cried! ‘What are you doing cutting those up’ I said…! Apparently! (don’t believe it for a second!) He had asked me if I wanted any of them and because I hadn’t shown an interest, he assumed they were all his to cut up as he pleased GRR! Needless to say, now I have looked through them all and kept the ones I want…You Know me! I love a bit of Big Up Blighty!

Mathmetician Materials

Also I love collecting vintage mathmetician materials and one day last year Freddy bought me home this lovely red Abacus. He went to a bootsale when I wasn’t that bothered in going, the Bootsales around our area are full of baby clothes and new stalls and you have to walk so far just to find something decent. My leg was playing me up so Freddy went to the Bootsale alone…It’s amazing what he can pick up scooting around in his wheelchair and when he goes alone, he always brings me back amazing presents, he so knows what I like…he must be my soulmate!

Talking of mathmetician materials, you can see what I mean with regards to the pieces I like to collect what with the rulers below, but also can you see the red bus and telephone box? I bought them when I was staying in London, you see I had to be with Freddy for a while, when he was in hospital in St Tomas’s and to waste a bit of time (and to take my mind of the horrible’ness of why he was there) I went shopping in some Tourist shops… Once I saw these little darling ornaments I just had to have them! and they are both pencil sharpeners! What Fun!

I hope you have enjoyed a little tour of my happy finds of late… I have also posted some of the pictures on Instagram to, Not sure whether it’s best to persue that idea as so many people seem to use instagram these days! it might be the better and easiest route to go…what do you think?

A Step Back in Time - Christmas 2021

I know you probably think you are seeing things, but I thought we would step back in time as I hadn't shown you any of my Christmas 2021 pics! So I thought...Better late then Never and here they are...

Sorry about the Pictures

The quality is terrible as I have taken them on my Ipone! ha ha I mean Iphone 8, which is like an antique these days! I always get the hand me downs as I am too tight to purchase at the exorbitant prices or get a contract lol! I have recently realised though, that if I take them on Freddy's new tablet I can transfer them by 'Air' (Who Knew!) so I think that is the way I will do it in future...or I might revert back to my camera! I'll have to dust it off though! I can't even remember where it is! Oh God! I'll be looking for that for about 3 weeks now! :)

Our sometimes Georgeous Bella

Look at my darling little Bella, she is a cavachon, which is a King Charles Spaniel mixed with a Bichon Frise...She is such a Cheeky lil thing! I think Freddy would call this look 'resting bitch face' lol! (does anyone use 'lol' anymore?) She is looking over at him in this picture I know that! She really does make our family complete, she is a little mare at times and likes to bark when it gets dark, you know, when everyone is asleep and when you really need to be quiet...Oh yeah she loves to do that with a passion!

She also knows that I am the leader of the pack, what I say goes! she knows I mean business and that I can move quick! But she makes Freddy work for it, because she knows that he can't get to her as quick in his wheelchair. Oh don't get me wrong she loves him and everything, while he's doing Her Majesty's work! say like tummy tickles, massages and feeding her, but when he needs to get her in from the garden, she totally ignores him! lol! (I've decided I still like writing lol! Just putting it out there :) ) He has tried everything, even waving bits of ham out of the door :)) I have only got to say 'I'll get the hose' and she comes running in straight away, because she knows I will! :)

Oh dear 'ark at me going on a bit aren't I...

Now where was I? Oh yes Christmas pictures... Well I hope you like them, I think there is 17 in all! I am not going to say that I have my mojo back because that always ends in me not writing another post for ages. But what I will say is that I am feeling a lot better in myself, there is still a lot to do in this house of ours and whilst I wasn't feeling it last year, nothing got done and previous years; Well I just threw myself into the garden, so there is a lot of projects to do and I really feel like I want to share my life with you again!...and whilst we are on that subject...Thank you so much for hanging around and waiting for me to get my head straight ( I am blowing a virtual kiss to you all xx) a lot of you on Facebook, Instagram and on my blog here have really kept me going...much more than you could ever imagine...so thank you all from the bottom of my heart x.

A few things have changed here on the blog lately...

You might have noticed that I have added a shop on my blog here and just lately I have added a few bits and pieces! I have bought so much stuff and I have been buying for buyings sake...I think sometimes it's good therapy to get out and about and take your mind off things that would otherwise drive you CrAzY lol!, so please keep checking in and visit my shop page when you can. I hope to bring you plenty of Happy House cheer.

A Happy Update for December

A Happy Update for December.

Hello my lovely friends, I thought I owed you another Happy update, as now we are in December!...Once again I have been away for a while...I have wanted to write this blog but just couldn't find the words, so here I am, two weeks before Christmas (where does the time go!) A lot of upsetting things have happened and I hadn't really wanted to tell you, because so many of you have been fighting your own battles in life, but I thought I probably owed you an explanation...so here goes...

I have been looking after my Mum ever since she moved over in 2017 and the more she needed me, the more I went over there to look after her! things weren't to good at home, so it suited me to do that...I also got help from Rosie too, But this year took a toll and Rosie's health got worse and she was not able to help me with Mum anymore...My depression was at an all time low at this point!

To cut a long story short I had a mental breakdown! I couldn't function in the way I used to, I was not interested in anything, all I wanted to do was sleep, I didn't care what I looked like, what the house looked like...I had fallen down a BIG hole and I couldn't be bothered to get out of it! Carers had to be appointed for my mum whilst I tried to get myself back to some sort of normality.

Gradually things changed at home, Freddy and I started going out together more...things were getting easier for me! I was actually starting to enjoy my life again! I wanted to go out and look for cute collectibles...trawl charity shops, drive down to the coast and eat fish and chips in newspaper! I started to get ideas in my head again, I knew I was getting better, spending more time with my Freddy was the best medicine for me, he is my soulmate I have always known that, its just sometimes things get in the way don't they and we don't focus on what we really need!

Then...

Freddie had a cardiac arrest! his heart rate was beating so fast and they couldn't understand why! he was shocked quite a few times at Medway Hospital before they decided to rush him (blues and two's) to St Thomas's Hospital in London, I can't really tell you what I was feeling at this time, it all felt like a dream...it just couldn't be real, please let it not be real! We are so happy right now...

Freddie spent a month in St Thomas's hospital, eleven of those days were in intensive care. They had to put him in an induced coma to keep his heart rate stable...they worked miracles there...but they did say to us that we could lose him at any time. My heart was broken, please not my Freddie! It made me think of all the heartbreak that people had gone through, losing their loved ones through the Covid19 pandemic and now it was probably my turn...my heart was breaking every minute of the day, I was so lucky to have my family's support. My Mum (bless her) although she couldn't do much, was always there for me at the end of the phone, and Freddie's parents were so lovely to me, we clung together and they kept me sane. Rosie was with me most of the time, travelling to London and staying at a hotel nearby, she was my Rock! My Son Daz was at the end of the phone any time I needed him...I was supported totally by my nearest and dearest.

Then a miracle did happen!

The Doctors realised after many tests that Freddie had Sarcoid and was able to control his irregular heartbeat with drugs. He has had a defibrillator fitted to his heart and has been home nearly a month. He won't be able to drive for 6 months, so I have taken over that job! I am so grateful to all the Doctors and Nurses at St Thomas's, they have saved his life...not many people that go through what he has been through survive this!

So you can see why I haven't been around...

I feel like this year I have been to hell and back again, but rather than look on the dark side of things, I have to be grateful that we have survived all this and so blooming grateful that Freddie has survived and we can be together again. Some people haven't been so lucky and my heart goes out to them, I know that empty feeling, it hurts so bad.

So I'll end my post here, just letting you know that we are Okay and hopefully I'll be able to bring you some uplifting posts in the future and hopefully not too far apart :) We have decorated for Christmas, so I'll have to get my act together and bring you pictures from this years displays, looking forward to it xx
