OVERVIEW

Project Chronicle will be a free technology preview from the Autodesk Research team that allows users to capture, share, and learn from software workflows.

Chronicle makes it extremely convenient and easy to document and share workflows. The plug-in will allow users to capture workflows from within the application. The Chronicle system records the timing and details of workflow information – the mouse clicks and typing, the tool and settings being used, along with a continuous video screen and voice capture. Captured data is then uploaded to a web server where other users can view a video of the workflow and see a timeline marked up with all the command usage information.

In essence, Chronicle will allow software experts to showcase their expertise, and will allow other users to view and learn from these real-world expert examples.

Here is the article:

A common request we are seeing is the desire to schedule duct and pipe elbows by angle so that they can be scheduled and ordered. As the Angle parameter is a System Family it cannot be scheduled normally.

The help automate this process we have found that creating a Shared Parameter with a formula should pull the angle of the elbow, which in turn can be scheduled.

The process for goes like this:

Create a Shared Parameter file.

Edit the elbow families and add the Shared Parameter.
In the Family Types, set the formula for the Elbow Angle parameter to = Angle.
In the project, create a duct or pipe fitting schedule with the Elbow Angle Parameter (along with any other parameters).

You should now have a schedule that shows the Angles. From here, you can filter the information to best suit your needs.

One thing to keep in mind, is that initially the schedule will show all fittings (Tees, Crosses, Transitions, etc.), so filtering by "Elbow Angle > Parameter Exists", should only show the elbow families with the shared parameter.

To see a video of this process go to this link:

December Meeting

The Next Meeting will be

After our last meeting it was discussed about a Wasatch front BIM standard of some sorts. When asked what the thinking behind this would be it was stated. "We all work together at one point in time". That being said I thought about it and this person was correct. So what kind of items do we want in a standard? Or better yet do we need in a standard? I like the idea of some type of standard along the community for architects, mechanical, electrical and contractors. SO this is where you folks come in at. Send me an email post on facebook on the WFRUG wall. Or comment on this post. I know it is a competitive business out there trying to get an edge over the other guy or gal. But if we can make a standard and "play" together we are only going to help our clients in the long run.

CAD Shack: Spell Check the Whole project

CAD Shack: Spell Check the Whole project: For what ever reason in Revit the Spell Check function only checks what is in the current view. The degree would differ from a traditional architecture degree in that it would primarily address the structural and constructability aspects of architectural design and construction. The degree would be a Bachelors of Science and would include classes from both traditional design and construction management departments. Software packages being taught would be AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Revit Structure, Navisworks, 3DS Max, Google Sketch Up, Ecotect Analysis, various scheduling software packages, Quantity take off and various estimating software packages.

We are looking for participants to take a survey about the job opportunities and potential pay scales of graduates of such a program. The program will be built upon the premise of BIM changing the way the architectural design and construction business of today is done. We are looking for participants from all aspects of the design and construction industry to participate. (Architects, Engineers, Designers, Consultants, Etc.) Questions will address such topics as skill sets needed, job availability, earning potential as well as various other questions to determine if such a degree would be needed in our state. Graduates would enter the workforce with applicable BIM knowledge as well as construction knowledge. Job titles could include BIM manager, BIM coordinator, BIM specialist, BIM modeler among other titles. If you are willing to participate in a 5-10 survey that will be administered through surveymonkey.com please send me your contact information. If you know of anyone who would be beneficial to include in this research study to determine if there are jobs and a need for such a degree please forward this to them or have them contact me directly. We expect to have the survey ready to roll later this fall.

If you are interested in this survery let me know. And I will get send your email address to correct person so you can help out with this item.

The general thought was we all work together at some point in time on many different projects. So here lies the question. What kind of standards do we look at incorporating across the board? Tags for all equipment? Systems? Worksets? Navis exports? I agree that we need some form of standard to use to work with each other. I mean in the end we are trying to make the owner happy right? So either email me thoughts at tjbeecher@gmail.com or leave a comment here or go to the facebook page for the group.
