Indonesian fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan is here to revolutionize the American fashion industry, with a stunning runway show featuring 48 outfits, all with gorgeous hijabs. The collection was a bold move for the fashion industry, as Muslim women in the United States can be harassed for wearing hijabs in the workplace, and headscarves can make one a target on the street. And in France, a burkini ban was created, criminalizing Muslimah fashion.

Hijabs have been a versatile fashion statement for Muslim women for centuries. For many Muslim women in parts of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, the garment can not only symbolize the faith, but can be used as a socioeconomic marker of class, wealth, and political beliefs. Whereas Westerners previously viewed the hijab as “otherness,” the style has been regarded as extremely fashion forward in various parts of the world.

“I believe fashion is one of the outlets in which we can start that cultural shift in today’s society to normalize hijab in America so as to break down stereotypes and demystify misconceptions,” Melanie Elturk, chief executive of Haute Hijab, wrote on Instagram. “Last night’s show was a huge leap forward in that direction. Anniesa – thank you for the courage and strength to keep your designs and models true to your beliefs and not giving in to the pressure – you made history and we love you.”

Slowly but surely, we’re seeing more ‘modest’ style in the mainstream Western fashion world.

And in an absolute first for Britain, a ‘fashion week’ dedicated to Muslim-friendly designs is being held in London.

Featuring more than 40 brands from around the world, according to its designers London Modest Fashion Week is far from Muslim exclusive but simply adheres to Muslim values – or anyone of any faith who wishes to cover up more.

It’s being held in the iconic Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London, and has been set up by UK-based modest fashion company Haute Elan.

Why now, particularly? For one, it comes at an important time as Islamophobia is on the rise and many women who wear the hijab want to feel more confident wearing it in public.

And above all else, consumers are simply catching on.

Event organiser and founder of Haute Elan, Romanna Bint-Abubaker, told Sky News the Muslim market is currently the ‘fastest growing global consumer’:

‘One in three people – by 2030 – will be a Muslim in the world – that’s a huge population,’ she said.

Last season, Muslim fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan made headlines as she became the first ever designer to feature hijabs in every outfit of her collection.

Now, at a time when what Muslim women choose to wear is causing debate and multiple brands are deciding to make political statements via their shows, Hasibuan is making history once again.

Unveiling her second collection amid controversy over US President Donald Trump’s recent order on immigration, the Muslim designer decided to cast her show entirely with immigrants and second-generation children of immigrants.

Hasibuan, however, claims that her work is first and foremost geared toward Muslim women and not a reaction to politics.

Hasibuan says her shows prove that “fashion is for everybody"

“I'm here bringing the beautiful voice of the Muslim women, the peace and the universal values that fashion can offer,” she told AFP.

In just two seasons, the Indonesian Muslim designer has successfully made the hijab her trademark, bringing it into the mainstream and insisting that “fashion is for everybody.”

“There is beauty in diversity and differences , something we should not be afraid of,” she added.

Hasibuan isn’t the only designer looking to break down stereotypes in the fashion industry though.

For Yeezy Season 5, Kanye West cast hijab-wearing Somali-American model Halima Aden to make her runway debut at New York Fashion Week.

The 19-year-old first made headlines back in November after competing in Minnesota’s Miss USA competition while wearing a hijab and proudly modelling a burkini for the swimsuit portion.

Now, she’s breaking the boundaries of beauty and perception and is fast becoming an icon within the industry.

As reported previously, the label Fred Perry collaboration with singer Amy Winehouse has long heard. But the British label, the new showcase fashion collection on Monday (5/12/2011) and then, starting from 9 am.

Despite the fact that winter 2011 is yet to begin and that the fast fashion retail model depends on getting you excited about what’s in store now not at a distant point in the future, H&M have already revealed their interpretation of men’s spring 2012 fashion.

So what’s does the retailer have in store for guys for the season?

Plenty that feels familiar and plenty that is heavily influenced by the year’s emerging menswear trends.

On the Milan runway, Dolce & Gabbana successfully married the socially incompatible pair of food and fashion. But backstage, there was another party. A party where pasta, chilli, cheese and clothes weren’t invited, but an entry was guaranteed for Sophia Loren and other Italian women with equally seductive hair.

We’re talking about the hair inspiration at Dolce and Gabbana’s spring 2012 runway show. As seen on the runway, the loosely tousled curls were pulled back together in an effortless French twist. But, just like all other catwalk shows, watching perfectly groomed hair on a model is one thing, and interpreting it in your daily regime is a completely different story.

This hair look translates for a glamorous woman who’s on a holiday. The kind of style you’d pull together while you’re sunbaking on a Mediterranean island. We are anticipating this look to be a winner during 2012’s sultry summer.

At the Dolce and Gabbana spring 2012 show, hair tongs were used to create more elaborate waves. Here, following the Redken team’s instructions, you can recreate the look with a more natural and fast-paced approach.

How to (The hair) looks a bit as if the woman was dancing all night,” says Redken’s Creative Consultant, Guido. Guiding you through the look, Guido shares with us his top tips to achieve this “effortless gorgeous” hairdo at home :

To build volume in your locks, massage a thickening lotion all through damp hair (at Dolce & Gabbana the hair team used Redken’s Thickening Lotion 06 – All Over Body Builder). The key is to maintain a natural movement, so avoid using a brush when your hair is still wet. Let the hair naturally dry.
If your hair still lacks beach-like texture, apply a texturizing cream to the roots, especially around the crown. Guido suggests Redken’s Soft Texturizing Cream-Wax.
The hair should be completely dry by this stage, don’t proceed to the next step if it isn’t. Dry hair is essential for styling this look.
Backbrush (not back comb – very important to know the difference) the hair to add more texture and rough volume to the roots of the hair. Start from the nape of the neck and work upwards.
Once your hair has the volume and texture, finger comb the hair back, away from the face, and pull hair back into a French twist. Secure with bobby pins.
Blow-dry the fringe in an upward motion to create a quiff bouffant, and then pull it back and secure with bobby pins.
Don’t pull back the hair too tightly; make sure to keep the hair loose around the face. You need to maintain the naturalness of the look here.
Finish it off with some hairspray, if needed

Last night’s Lucian Matis show was an exhibition of super-bright embellishments worn atop sheer champagne bases but, if you ask us, the bona-fide delights were in the digits. Spotted on the runway was yet another certifiably insane—as in amazing—nail art design by Leeanne Colley from Tips Nail Bar, Toronto’s infamous cool zone for manicures. Before the show started, we snuck backstage to preview the custom almond-shaped nails decorated in a vibrant watercolour pattern. “We did a base of Revlon‘s “White on White” nail enamel, then CND‘s “Anchor Blue” and “Electric Orange” and Hard Candy‘s “Yellow and Splendid.” We dabbed a pin-sized amount of each colour onto the nail using a tiny brush, then dropped a smidgen of acetone on top to make it disperse and look transparent. Basically, we made all the colours run into each other,” Colley explained. Well, basically, Colley just inspired us to ornament our nails with similar show-stopping designs.

“I was sent a picture of Kate Lanphear for inspiration,” says M.A.C Cosmetics senior artist Melissa Gibson of Greta Constantine’s no-makeup makeup for their Spring 2012 show. She describes the look as “worn-in wholesome”—the effect of sun-blanched skin after a day of walking the streets of New York City. “It’s blown out; you want to see the natural contours of the face.” This means monochromatic with a velvety texture, and no mascara or nail lacquer. On top of a base of M.A.C. Studio Sculpt concealer Gibson used just two shades of M.A.C. cream colour base: “Root” and “Shell.” For the eye, “Root” was applied all over, with “Shell” providing frosted highlights. Gibson also applied “Shell” to the lips—but after she used concealer to leave only a hint of the lip line visible.

The hair at Greta Constantine echoed this relaxed approach—though Colin Ford, national director for Education and Events, L’Oreal Professionnel, said the inspiration was more resort than city streets: “The concept is the effortless look of when you’re swimming on vacation and don’t want to redo your hair before going out at night.” Ford kept the natural wave to each model’s hair, sometimes adding a “bend” with the flatiron. A healthy application of Lumicontrôle Nutri-Wax on the top of the head provided a slick, out-of-the-pool style and contrasted the loose feel of the rest of the hair.

Cassie Dee got her start as a pattern maker and a fashion instructor before launching her own line in 2010. Produced exclusively in Canada, the Cassie Dee label appeals to a modern way of dressing with unique details and superb fit.

For Spring 2012, Cassie Dee was inspired by rooting her own tailored, city-girl aesthetic in an out west colour story—the city wardrobe on a road trip. This comes through in country-style elements like bold topstitching, beautiful buttons and patchwork, and a few nature-inspired shapes to create cowling and swirling seam lines.

Martin Lim is the merger of two award-winning designers: Danielle Martin and Pao Lim. The pair has worked with renowned designers such as Christian Lacroix and Roland Mouret and also collaborated with well-established Canadian companies.

For Spring 2012, Martin Lim is inspired by recent travel through Europe: ornate doors of Parisian buildings, images from a Madame Grès exhibition, the colours of Berlin architecture, and a visit to the Tate Modern in London. The collection is a mix of sophisticated references that balance fluidity and rigidity.

Travis Taddeo launched his eponymous line in 2008 after graduating from the fashion design program at Montreal’s LaSalle College. Known for minimal lines and using jersey fabrics and leather, Taddeo provokes and pushes boundaries to create a bold marriage between luxury and street wear.

Named Dry Heat, the Spring 2012 collection explores a certain restlessness found in the heat of summer. It captures a dream-like state plagued with an insatiable hot desire for adventure, experience, and growth.

Adam Taubenfligel’s career started in 2007 when working in denim factories in Italy. A self-taught designer, he learned the art of denim construction on the factory floor and, with his brother Mark and sister Ania, implemented that knowledge into the creation of Triarchy. The brand was built on a respect for authentic craftsmanship and prides itself on paying homage to the history of old-world denim while re-imagining it for today.

Triarchy’s inspiration for Spring 2012 is the lifestyle of adventure and exploration from the golden age of travel, both fictional (Indiana Jones) and real (Amelia Earhart). The colour palette is derived from the North American landscape—driving down the West Coast from British Columbia to California, with blues pulled from the Pacific ocean and charcoals greys from burning camp fires and rocky cliffs.

UNTTLD is the ongoing collaborative work of Montreal designers José Manuel St-Jacques and Simon Bélanger. The line shares their very intimate idea of fashion through the meticulous exploration of traditional techniques (knits, crochet, and handmade silkscreen printing) that are reconstructed, modernized, and adapted.

For Spring 2012, the collection has a fluid structure and sporty elegance with luminous blacks and shady whites. It mixes the sexiness of austere fabrics with the organic feel of geometric cuts. Leather, silk and metal are alchemically mixed for the sporty aristo-punk woman. UNTTLD explores the concept of belonging and the eternal desire to be part of the gang, whoever you are.

Michael Kors. It’s a name that’s hard to forget. It’s a name that is permanently burned into your brain after your first glance at any of his work. Kors has evolved from a fashion designer to a direct fashion authority. With over 30 years designing and 7 seasons hosting the hit reality T.V. show “Project Runway” his new collection was one that was definitely a must-see at this years’ NYFW. Going back to the real basics this season, Kors stunned audiences with his new safari theme for his 2012 Spring collection which made its debut at this years’ Mercedez-Benz New York Fashion Week. Kors use of earthy tones, warm colours and animal prints of every kind were pleasant and easy on the eyes. His new spring collection fell nothing short of wild, with a subtle contemporary twist.

His stunning, sun-kissed models all adorned the collection perfectly, wearing everything from leopard print to white body suits under long white trench coats to safari shorts and blouses. What caught my eyes was not only the clothing, but the accessories, like the snake skin belts. Not to mention the shoes in Kors runway were to die for… especially the belted, calf-high sandals.

Kors began his career when he was 19 and since then has been unstoppable. Never shying away from the forefront of fashion, every designer should be looking at Kors and taking a page out of his book. New York Fashion Week Overview

I was fortunate to witness one of the biggest fashion shows in the US; The Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week in New York. Energetic would’ve been one way of describing the atmosphere. Many people were anxious to see the upcoming collections from some of the top designers in the world. Once the red carpet rolled out, numerous celebrities started pouring out to see the show. A-list artists like Beyonce and Nicki Minaj, socialites like the Kardashian sisters and actors Gerard Butler and Michael Douglas all stepped out to witness, front row, this spectacular show. The catwalk setting and music for each designer’s presentation was unique to them and helped to accentuate on the theme of their story. Once the lights and music started blasting and blaring, svelte silhouettes started parading up and down the runway, conveying a warm yet colourful storytelling. There were many “Ouhs” and “Aahs” for designers like Badgley Mischka and Tadashi Shoji. Talents like Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs and Max Azria all converged to exhibit their version of the 2012 Spring/Summer trend. They were not partial to skin showing, funky patterns and surely didn’t limit themselves to the typical seasonal color palettes. From pastel color blocks, bright tangerines and limes to black and neutral, the array of hues marks individuality from one designer to another. Many of them, like Narciso Rodriguez, have had their share of mishaps and adversities before getting to where he’s at now. Although he may fall short in years when it comes to hands-on experience but with a clientele like Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Obama and Rachel Weisz, he is far from stopping in his tracks now.

After a couple of collections That erred too far on the experimental side of edgy, Alexander Wang was back in peak form for Fall, teaming a sexy, Streetwise attitude with a new sense of luxury. His bomber-jacket poncho Furs hybrids and boyfriend-guaranteed to fly out of his SoHo store opened just set the season's bold outerwear movement in motion. Trend-wise, his mink sandals proved equally prescient. And he gets bonus points for his dressed-down dress-up clothes, ESPECIALLY the peach mohair sweater and matching bias-cut, slit silk skirt.

Balenciaga

There's no one like Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière for changing fashion's collective eye, but this season he mixed the avant-garde with the accessible to brilliant effect. Perhaps only the bravest will venture to don one of his knitted faux leather jackets, but everything else he showed landed high on the wearability meter—from the sporty color-blocked tunics worn over slim track pants to the archive-inspired sculptural coats. And if you're wondering what next season's statement skirt will be, look no further than Aline Weber in exit 1.

Paper-shredder hems, lace stencils, hand-dyed silks, overlays—all those painstaking details went into Tomas Maier's dresses this season, but he finessed them in such a manner that the results were more couture than crafty, and drop-dead gorgeous to boot. If the silhouettes said 1960's, the way the designer harnessed the artisanal skills of the Bottega Veneta studios ensured that his cocktail frocks were as modern as they come.

Celine

"Fast, strong, powerful." That was Phoebe Philo backstage, talking about her unlikely Fall inspiration, cars. Those words could also serve as a spot-on description of her Celine collection. We'd add another adjective to the mix: "essential," because that's the feeling her silhouette-elongating, second-skin turtlenecks and tapered, ankle-zip pants gave the women in her crowd this season. As for the coats—streamlined dusters, color-blocked furs, upholstery vinyl jackets—they can best be summed up as follows: "hard to pick just one."

Givenchy

Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci is hot, and not just because he appears to be first in line for the Dior job left vacant by his former LVMH colleague John Galliano. With Bettie Page and Amanda Lear as muses, Tisci played up his subversive streak for Fall, sending out sheer pencil skirts topped by patent peplums and sweatshirts stamped with either black panthers or pinup girls. The effect was hard yet soft, aggressive yet fragile, and as darkly glamorous as anything we saw this season.

Haider Ackermann

Leonard Cohen and his love song "A Thousand Kisses Deep" may deserve a cut of the Fall sales, but no show moved the fashion flock more convincingly than Haider Ackermann's did this season. Why so persuasive, soundtrack aside? Ackermann's sublime color sense, for one. And for another, the gorgeous way he drapes and sculpts everything from silk to suede. This isn't easy fashion, and we're grateful for that. Ultimately, what enraptures us is his unwavering, straight-from-the-heart, and increasingly sophisticated vision.

Marc Jacobs

Out went the 1970's glamorama of Spring, and in CAME restraint-in all senses of the word. Marc Jacobs' collection womanly hugged the body, yet left barely an inch of flesh exposed. But you could not call it for one second Prim-nots with all Those polka dots or the fetishy rubber (which the designer would Revisit to entertainingly Provocative if less mysterious effect at Louis Vuitton). And, to be sure, Those car-finish paint accessories Will have fans kneeling at his feet.

Marni

Minimalism from Marni? Not exactly, but Consuelo Castiglioni did show off a more disciplined side this season, and with utterly charming results. Jackets and skirts matched instead of clashed; what's more, The Octagon print that dominated the collection (and the runway decor) was more subtle than the patterns this house has tended to prefer in the past. But That does not mean there Was not color: Castiglioni showed one of the season's loveliest Furs, an emerald green and brown mink and beaver Belted coat over a camel and coral dress.

Miu Miu

Miuccia Prada wrapped up the Fall season with a bow at Miu Miu. Make That a bow tied at the hip of a pretty, flower-printed dress of a 1940's extraction. This collection of modern vintage dresses looked tailor-made for Starlets Hailee Steinfeld and Mila Kunis, WHO sat front-row in what Had to be the location of the season, Paris' Palais d'iena. But the gold cat-eye sunglasses heels and glitter-dipped Will have a life well beyond the red carpet.

Valentino

Reinventing a label as Venerable at Valentino's, and while the designer is still alive to watch, is no easy feat. But Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli have been quieting naysayers almost from the get-go, and no one Could argue with the way Their Fall collection married the house's signature romance with Modernity. Cue the studs That dotted the front of a double-face cashmere coat or the lace That was spliced with leather for a strapless dress. This duo knows That the way forward is to balance respect for the house codes with a healthy dose of irreverence.

Lace is very womanly and it never really goes out of fashion, as lace clothing can be found among chain- store clothing rails throughout the year. Lace will become a popular fashion, and featured in many clothing shopes. When it's not so popular, lace becomes a classic and still remains in the fashion market.

Lace clothing gives a chic look, and can look beautiful without exertion.`But there's a few risks in wearing lace clothing, for example you can look too Gothic.

How you should wear lace.
You should avoid wearing jewelery with lace, as this will probably look over the top. Wear it with minimum jewelery. If you choose wearing lace wear it with stud earrings, or a gold bangle. Pearls are not good with lace.

Go for fine lace, rather than large chunky patterns. On the subject of hems, another one to avoid is a jagged, uneven cut. Medieval like fashion looks very silly on most people!

Never wear white stockings, unless your going to a dress-up party! Black lace stockings are hot with skirts in winter, but don't ever wear them with a denim skirt. Denim skirt plus black lace stockings is running the risk of looking trailer-trash. Avoid bright coloured skirts too. Black stockings will always go best with a black skirt. If your wear black stockings with a black skirt, go for a different coloured top, to avoid looking Gothic.

Lace panels on clothing is a good alternative to full lace garments.

If a clothing item is made completely of lace, wear it down with simple clothing. Plain, bold colours are good, all colours go with black, but brown. It's not really a good look to wear lace with clothing that is patterned or printed.

Be careful about wearing denim with lace. A garment with minimal lace, and particularly white lace, goes great with denim. But don't take it any further, like wearing a top made of completely lace, with a pair of jeans. It's a sort of stereotypical look, that doesn't look that nice.

Dior Gained Market Share Over the First Half of 2011

It’s been a good year for luxury companies–everyone from Hermes to Richemont have reported gains in 2011–and LVMH is not immune. Sales reached €10.3 billion in the first half of the year, an increase of 13% from 2010. The fashion sector of the company also saw a 13% increase in sales, to 3.97 billion. And what’s more, every single brand gained market share.

Including scandal-ridden Dior, whose creative director, John Galliano, was dismissed in February due to racist comments he made in a restaurant (and other unhinged behavior).

So it seems that the brand, despite the constant negative press it’s received over the last six months, is in incredibly good shape. Whether that’s due to the consumer’s understanding of its rich heritage, or the consumer’s ambivalence toward bad behavior, remains unknown.

Armed Forces Fashion for Men Comes Full Circle

Has it actually come full circle, rising from the ashes instead of settling into the dust of the battlefields where it was shot down? It certainly seems that way.

After being a dominant trend for the better part of the past decade men's military fashion is back to exactly where it started.

You need only take a look over the street style photos to come out of Europe over the past weeks to see that men's military fashion continues as a dominant theme amongst summer 2011's trends. The thing is, it's a great deal different from the last time we indulged in this style.

That difference comes down to the cut of the military cloth that gents are wearing this summer. Instead of the Great War / Second World War style we came to wear across 2009 and 2010, summer 2011's take on men's military is rooted in the style of basic, mid-20th century military clothing. Where epaulettes were once embellished, they are now crisp and green. Dress trousers have been replaced by cargo pants. The reds and blues have been replaced by military green and camouflage print. In short, the traditional, full dress uniform has made way for the functional military clothing that started the whole trend back in 2001.

Full circle indeed.

We've all seen Helmut Newton's iconic image of YSL's Le Smoking: a model with slicked-back hair, cigarette clutched casually in hand, becomes a statuesque, androgonous fixture on a Parisian street. The whole look is pristinely tailored; the pants are high in the waist and wide in the leg, but the blouse underneath the jacket is soft and finished at the neck by a bow. It's the epitome of feminine-meets-masculine, and it's exactly where the women's tuxedo trend has returned to in 2011 / 2012.

When we last saw the tuxedo as a full-force trend back in 2008 it was a powerful statement that kept mostly to the glaringly sexy side with skinny cuts, tight fits and plenty of high-sheen satin. Since then, men's tailoring has relaxed and so too has women's. Like Le Smoking, the women's tuxedo is once again about that effortless androgyny that's stitched up in immaculately tailored yet lightly relaxed pieces, minimalist silhouettes, and that all important hint of 1970s glamour.

So what does that mean exactly?

It means you're best off leaving behind these attributes from 2008:

Women's tuxedo jackets with pointed or puffy accentuated shoulders.
Skimpy tux-inspired outfits that look like they could belong in the costume section of a lingerie store.
Overly glamorous head-to-toe tuxedo looks that involve heels, bow-ties, and top hats all at once.
Satin ruffle blouses (opt instead for cotton, lightweight silks or sheer fabrics).

Instead, for 2011 and into 2012:

Take cues from the 1970s with wide, peaked lapels.
Don't just stick to traditional black; while 2008's skinny jeans and a black dinner jacket combo can be updated for today, there are also other more interesting ways to stand out in the trend.
