Rinjani Mountain

After visited Gili Trawangan, it is recommended that you – while test your physic – enjoy the extraordinary scine alongside the line towards mount Rinjani ( 3776 mdpl). It is the third highest mountain in Indonesia after Puncak Jaya Wijaya in Papua and Kerici mount in Sumatra. Rinjani also is one of the biggest volcano in Indonesia.

The landscapes around this active volcano are many, spread out along the savanna, tropical rain forest, pine plants, and a wide Kaldera lake. There are two popular lines towards the top of mountain. It is from Senaru or from Sembalun Lawang countryside. If you strart from Senaru, you will arrive at Kaldera lake (formed by the eruption of Rinjani mountain), as the first place. In the middle of Rinjani, there is a small Rinjani. At the side of Segara Anak lake, located at Rinjani, you can make a camp, an experience that will be a beautiful memories. Afterwards, from here you can continue to climb the top of Rinjani.

The line from Sembalun Lawang towards top of Rinjani doesn't pass the lake, but direct to the slope of the mountain which fulfill with pine forest. Here you can make a camp for a while, awaiting for morning, and then you can continue to climb or downwards to lake and go back through Senaru route. From top of Rinjani we can see the scine that’s really beautiful. That makes us not really tired after climbing the top during more than two hours.

There is no place which no people never visited than Gili Trawangan, because it’s likely a journey towards heaven. The landscape of Gili Trawangan, either undersea or surface, is very beautiful.

The local inhabitants take care the originality of the island lying at west of Lombok. Therefore motorcycles are prohibited in this area. Along the sandy pathway shifted the resident area to the beach, we only see footsteps, bicycle wheel, or delman.

Restaurant, shop souvenir, diving facilities, ten of cheap relative inn are spread over alongside this pathway. Afterwards, you may try to see the natural beauty of undersea landscape, and also two smaller other islands around Gili Trawangan, that is Gili Air and Gili Meno, which blue cobble that cannot be compared to Caribean sea and only be find in these places. Madakaripura Waterfall

Near the village of Sapeh, district of Lumbang, about 33 km to the north east of Probolinggo, there is a spectacular waterfall known as Madakaripura. It is hidden in the dense forest of the mountain range of Tengger. It is very inspiring and adds the excitement of your visit to Mt. Bromo.

This waterfall is believed to be the sacred waterfall since it was right here that the Great Prime Minister of Majapahit, Gajah Mada, spent the rest of his life and practiced asceticism by meditating under this waterfall. Paying a visit to this object and enjoying the lush mountain greenery would be an unforgettable experience. Words cannot describe the magnificent Madakaripura adequately.

This object, with a height of 620 m above the sea level, is on a gentle slope with a friendly atmosphere. You can feel the roar as the water falls from a height of 200 m creating an awe-inspiring waterfall. It is more likely a happening of something that takes place in a fairy land.

The best time to see the falls is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun is high enough to light up the valley's bottom. One may bathe in the falls' pure natural water, which, it is said, cures rheumatism and all kinds of disorders besides preserving youth and vigor.

During the rainy season, visitors will have to be careful as overflowing may occur occasionally. Attention should be paid to notes of warning. This waterfall, which is quite easy to be visited, is just 6 km from Sukapura, the gateway of Mt. Bromo (www. petra.ac.id)

Celebrating Mountane Life

Now in its fifth year, communities living in the vicinity of five mountains in Central Java andYogyakarta gathered on Sept. 17 in Banyusidi village, Magelang, to celebrate the Five Mountains Festival.

Featuring a variety of traditional and contemporary performances, the festival took place on the western slope of Mount Merbabu.

The cultural festival is largely a community event akin to a country fair, and thousands of residents from Mt. Merbabu, Mt. Merapi, Mt. Andong, Mt. Appeasing a God

The Tengger tribe's most important celebration, Yadnya Kasada, commenced smoothly and without incident at the increasingly active Mount Bromo in Probolinggo, East Java.

Thousands of Tengger tribespeople, along with domestic and foreign tourists who had come to witness the annual festival, gathered on Sept. 7 for the ritual procession up the mountain.

The Tengger are believed to be descendants of a 15th-century princess of the declining Majapahit kingdom, Roro Anteng, and her husband Joko Seger, who fled to eastern Java's Tengger mountains. According to legend, the childless couple climbed the volcano and prayed to Bromo's god, who granted their wish for children on condition that they would sacrifice their youngest to its crater.

This year's Kasada was colored by the heightened alert status of Mt. Bromo, from Level 2 (Code Yellow) to Level 3 (Code Orange). With a possible eruption hanging over the festivities, the start of Kasada was delayed several hours as the Tengger people prayed to calm the sacred volcano - but without any visible effect.

An eruption is taken as a sign that the god is very angry. "It is our hope that nothing untoward will occur during this Kasada," said a festival participant.

And this hope was fulfilled as the ritual procession made its way across the desert plain - the Sand Sea - surrounding Bromo and up through the cloud-covered, chilly heights to its peak.

There, Tengger shamans prayed as others amassed the offerings they had carried up the volcano's slopes, then released them into the gaping crater. (The Jakarta Post, Sunday, September 24, 2006, pg. 20)

From Probolinggo to Bromo

This is the easiest and by far the most popular route. From Probolinggo, it's 28km to Sukapura, then another 14km to Ngadisari and another 3km to Cemoro Lawang. Minibuses run all the way to Cemoro Lawang from Probolinggo. Just before Cemero Lawang, you must pay the 2100Rp entrance post.

As with mountain scaling anywhere in Asia, it is all important to be at the top of Gunung Bromo for the impressive sunrise.
From Cemoro Lawang, it's 3km down the crater wall and across the Sand Sea (Lautan Pasir) to Bromo, about a one hour walk. Get up at 4.30 am or earlier for an easy stroll across to Bromo.

White stone markers are easy to follow in the dark, not to mention all the other climbers. Horses can also be hired for 15,000Rp. By the time you've crossed the lava plain from Cemoro Lawang and started to climb up Bromo (246 steps, one traveller reported), it should be fairly light. Packing Food For Travelling

After working hard on weekdays, week end travelling is much awaited. Even packing food is fun. How disappointed we will be, however, if on arrival the food is no longer edible.

It might be, the process of packing is not good enough. Remember that some kind of food cannot be packed in ordinary plastic bags for several hours. Note the following tips:

1. To save cooking time at the destination, marinate beef, chicken or fish from home. To keep them fresh, keep in a cooler box filled with ice blocks. Use adequate ice blocks in accordance with the quantity of food and length of travel time.

2. Put the cooler box in the cabin of your car where the temperature is cool due to the air conditioner. Do not put it in the baggage.

3. As soon as you arrive at the hotel, put the food in the refrigetator, to prevent decay. If there is no refrigerator, food can only be kept in the cooler box for 1 or 2 days. You also have to change or add the ice blocks.

4. If necessary take two cooler boxes, the other one for keeping things you often take out, for instance cool drinks, chocolate and other snacks. Opening cooler boxes frequently will ruin food such as meat.

5. If you bring raw meat, keep it dry as water in the plastic bag will damage the meat more quickly.

6. Separate cooked or half cooked food with the raw ones to prevent contamination.

7. Vegetables should be wrapped in plastic bags with holes in them to keep the contents frexh.

A Note If You Want to Visit Ijen

The journey to Ijen as far as three kilometers can be achieved by all people, adults and childrens with healthy bodies. The journey starts at a small path of Pal Tuding where many cottages managed by the Ministry of Forestry are available. The journey usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours walk to Ijen Crater.

Watching directly the mining activities are not allowed for public, especially those with physical problems and vertigo. The rule especially apply to those who would feel sick and dizzy easily if they inhale the sulphuric smoke.

The journey to the crater must apply extreme caution. On your way up, never talk to the miners carrying baskets if you don't have to. They would later stop and talk with you which would slow their rhytms and forcing them to use extra energy located at the bottom of the mountain at Pal Tuding. What an extraordinary scene, yet gloomy for us.

About ten minutes later, the path ended at an open space with the sight of a beautiful valley on our right. Up here, we could see Rante and Raung Mountains in the distance. It was less than twenty minutes for us to reach the Ijen Crater from here as we could already smell sulphur indistinct. Although, the mountain was still active, still the picture of enjoying the Breathtaking crater that only few could enjoy -ad diminished their worries.

Ijen Crater was the final destination for the visitors, but actually it was a start for the miners. Yes, down below in the deep crater the mining was located.

The journey to the mining place was rocky and very steep. To reach it, we had to take a small path along the rocky wall on our right and 200-meter slope on our left. The path itself was very sloppy. What a startling outlook to see the miners had to carry up to hundreds kilograms of sulphur on their shoulders along the hard path. Yet, the picture was not complete unless we could see directly the mining activities on ground zero located on the side of a la ke.

A Miracle in East Java

If we make a list of miraculous places in Indonesia, the Bromo Mountain will
certainly be on the list. Miraculous in a way that when we see the place with
our own eyes, we will stand in awe and feel ourselves very small indeed.
Even those who do not fully believe in God will spontaneously call His Name and
admit that there is a bigger power outside the power of man. Man's limited mind cannot
visualise how the 800 meter (north-south) times 600 meter (east-west) can be found
in an unlimited sea of sand.

Bromo is one of the five mountains in the National Park Bromo-Tengger-Semeru. Being
a national park with the easiest access in Indonesia, the charm of Bromo is
never-ending.

The name Bromo is taken from the Sanskrit or Old Java "Brahma", a prominent Hindhu God.
These mountains are occupied by the Tengger ethnic group, the descendants of
Majapahit Kingdom who had lived there since 600 years ago. Bromo Mountain is believed
to be sacred, so each year the Tengger people hold the Kasodo ceremony
in an 'Aura' at the feet of the hill, proceeded by giving offerings to the top
of the hill. Kasodo is held from midnight to dawn at every full moon (14th or 15th) of
the Kasodo month (tenth month) in the Javanese calendar.

An active volcano, Bromo is situated 2,393 meters above sea level and spreads to
four areas: Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Lumajang, and Malang. If you plan to visit
Bromo, be prepared to a sharp cool breeze at night and dawn. After the sun comes out,
unpolluted clear air will show you an unblemished blue sky.

The most awaited in a visit to Bromo is its beautiful sunrise, a very amazing view.
As soon as a reddish sky lights up the rocks, the sharp smell of supphur
can easily be 'forgiven'. Walking on the sand, touching various bushes with our toes, is
indeed a novelty never experienced in big cities. Not to mention the pretty scene of tall
grass under the shower of morning sun.

The journey to this tourist attraction cannot be done by ordinary car,
you have to rent a jeep from the tourist office. Whereas horses are the only
'vehicle' allowed to go around on the sand and can be rented by those unwilling
to walk until the foot of the hill. However, many people are willing to go on foot
from the hotel to the location in order to watch the unforgettable scenery.

East Java posesses unpredictable natural charm. As part of the most populated
islands in Indonesia, I used to think that there is no natural spot left to be
observed. My scepticism turns out to be wrong, even in populated places. However,
those places are of course difficult to reach.

That morning, after witnessing the beauty and mysticism of Bromo, I was not ready
yet to return to my hotel. So I welcome the offer of the jeeps's driver to take
me to Madakaripura Waterfall. Soon the jeep zipped through the narrow mountain
road, up and down, up and down.

After more than an hour jostled in the jeep, I arrived at the gate of a desolate
recreational park. No wonder, it was mid-day in the fasting month, and the only
bridge was being renovated so we have to travel through small roads. Luckily
a kind hearted villager was willing to show me the way to the waterfall.
Situated in Desa Sapih, subdistrict of Lumbang, about 33 km north east of
Probolinggo, Madakaripura is a spectacular waterfall complex. Not only one
waterfall can be found, but three, each having a different height and falling
beautifully on the steep cliff.

From the gate, the waterfall can be reached in 30 minutes on foot. The journey
is easy as the path has been hardened by cement. Hundreds of pretty and colorful
butterflies accompany me, which in itself is a wonderful attraction.

Do not wonder if the guides bring along umbrellas, since, in order to watch the
waterfalls we have to go through showers of water.

Hidden within a deep forest in the mountains of Tengger, around 620 meters above
sea level, Madakaripura Waterfall is beleieved to be a sacred place. It is here
that Patih Gajah Mada often meditated.

For those who are sick, it is believed that bathing several times under this waterfall
can bring recovery. On the other hand, those who are healthy will enjoy swimming
in the cool, blue-green water of the river.
