UPDATE 1: Pro-life organizations celebrate Stupak amendment, warns of existing risks on health care bill

While the Stupak Amendment (Bart Stupak, D-Mi), which carried along components of the Hyde Amendment prohibiting government funds in programs for abortions, there is no guarantee that when it reaches the Senate, it will be included.

This is a complex issue. LifeSiteNews.com has been doing an excellent job of sifting through all of this complexity, very quickly, even posting this past Saturday when they do not normally do so. I highly recommend tracking it through them, but there are some other sources to follow, as well. LifeNews.com is another source worth following.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has been issuing frequent statements. Here was a message sent to the US House of Representatives on November 6th, ahead of the vote for the Stupak Amendment. The USCCB also has a webpage dedicated to Health Care Reform. The conference has explained it's position many times:

a truly universal health policy with respect for human life and dignity

access for all with a special concern for the poor and inclusion of immigrants

pursuing the common good and preserving pluralism including freedom of conscience and variety of options

restraining costs and applying them equitably across the spectrum of payers

Tom Peters - the American Papist, has also been blogging on this issue. In this post, Tom examines how the mainstream media distorted the US Bishop's position, perhaps fooling some into thinking the bishops actually endorsed the healthcare bill itself. Rather, it was the Stupak Amendment they were backing.

Another site I check daily (and often more than once daily), is NewAdvent.org. Kevin Knight receives links from people on a variety of hot topics. If there is breaking news somewhere in the Church, chances are, you will find it at New Advent.

The Institutum Sapientiae (Institute of Wisdom) is an institute of higher learning in philosophy and theology under the direction of the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross in Anápolis, Brazil. According to its statutes, which were definitively approved by the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Institutes on November 16, 2007, the Institute is specifically for the formation of candidates for the priesthood. It can also offer formation for members of religious institutes in classes separate from those given to the seminarians.

The Institute has been forming priests for the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross, the diocese of Anápolis as well as other religious communities and dioceses of Brazil since 1984 (see attachment 1). Priests who have received formation in the Institute are now serving the Church in countries all over the world, including the United States, Mexico, Columbia, India, the Philippines, Germany, Italy and Austria

Go view the presentation in this Year for Priests and pass the link along!
Please pray for those who died in the shooting rampage at Ft.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

This is "First Thursday". You can gain a plenary indulgence during this year for Priests.

Keep in mind, this is the year for priests. If you are local, there is the weekly Passio Domini led by a priest of the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross during Exposition, following the 7:00pm Mass.

Always remember that what counts is not how prayer makes us feel. Rather, it should be offered up unconditionally - not for our sake, but for God's sake. At those times that we feel least like praying, and do so, it is most pleasing to Our Lord. Put another way: Which is a greater act of charity before God? Visiting the sick when you feel like it (when it makes you feel good), or when you don't feel like it (when interiorly, it is a cross)?

O Almighty, Eternal God, look upon the Face of Your Son and for love of Him, who is the Eternal High Priest, have pity on Your priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition of the bishop’s hands. Keep them close to You, lest the enemy prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests; for Your unfaithful and tepid priests; for Your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Your tempted priests; for the lonely and desolate priests; for Your young priests; for Your dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in purgatory.

But above all, I commend to you N. and all the priests dearest to me, the priest who baptized me, the priests who have absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I have assisted and who have offered me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion, the priests who have taught and instructed me or helped and encouraged me, and the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way.

O Jesus, keep them all close to Your Heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

Several bishops have been monitoring the situation since news broke in recent weeks about Quinn's volunteer work at a Hinsdale clinic, which was identified in published reports as ACU Health Center. (An administrator there declined to confirm for ChicagoCatholicNews whether Quinn was a volunteer, saying such matters are typically private.)

Cardinal Francis George, Joliet Bishop J. Peter Sartain and Madison, Wisc., Bishop Robert Morlino are expected to talk soon -- if they have not already -- about Quinn, an aide to Morlino told ChicagoCatholicNews.

The reason all three clerics are involved: Quinn's Mother House (shown below) is based in the Diocese of Madison; she reportedly lives within the confines of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which is George's domain; and the abortion clinic she has been affiliated with falls in the Joliet Diocese.

Monday, November 2nd, is the Feast of All Souls.

It is an act of charity to pray for the souls of the dead, and for the poor souls in purgatory for whom no one prays. There is a reason why we ought not "canonize" people at their funerals by declaring them to be in heaven. What is lost is that these souls are neglected by many when it comes to prayer. Catholics today are not catechized well on purgatory and therefore, do not pray for the dead. Below are some resources you may find helpful.

The Mass schedule at Assumption Grotto has been altered slightly to accomondate as many Masses as possible. Please take time out of your day to assist at Mass on this feast day.

- Masses begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue every hour until 11:00; and 7:00 p.m.

Fr. Perrone wrote on the subject of All Souls Day in his pastor's column:

Monday is All Souls Day. It is the appropriate sequel to All Saints Day in that its focus centers upon those who are in heaven’s antechamber, so to speak, the place of purification and patient waiting of souls to be found worthy of eternal blessedness. What detains them in purgatory is the residue of their sins which must first be cleansed. Unlike ourselves who, living on earth and in time, can do good things to compensate for our past sins, the souls in purgatory have no means of self help. Consequently, they must either bide the time in enduring the sufferings prescribed for their purification, or else be helped from the ‘outside,’ that is, from the Church on earth. It is both a duty and an honor for us to help the needy. In the case of these “poor souls,” our responsibility and charity are called for with greater force. For this reason the Church prays for the dead in the Mass and in the private prayers of individuals; she offers Masses for the dead (the Requiem and funeral Masses), and encourages us to obtain the indulgences for the dead by performing the specified prayers and practices.

Regarding Masses, we will have Requiem Masses prayed on Monday at 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m: seven Masses total. This is not only for the priest who is permitted to celebrate three Masses on this day, according to the traditional allowance of the Church, but for the people as well. You may assist at as many Masses as you find it in your heart to be present for. As for Holy Communion, however, the usual rule still applies: one may receive it only twice on a given day.

Regarding indulgences, all partial indulgences can be applied to the dead. For the plenary indulgence proper to All Souls Day, the following applies. One must visit a church on this day and spend some time (unspecified) praying for the dead. One must also add Lord’s Prayer and the Creed (Apostle’s Creed of the Sunday Mass creed). The other ‘usual conditions’ (see below) must also be present. If there is something unfulfilled in these conditions, the indulgence granted will be only partial.

Also, from November 1st through the 8th one may gain a plenary indulgence for the dead by visiting a cemetery (such as ours) and, while there, praying for the faithful departed. Again, there are no specified prayers to be said, except for those outlined in the ‘usual conditions,’ provided that one says, even only mentally, some prayers for the dead.

The ‘usual conditions’ are these: the one performing the work to gain the indulgence must be free from all sins, mortal and venial (venial sins can be remitted by an act of contrition, which is a good way to begin a work to gain an indulgence); one must receive the sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion: the Confession may be some days before or even after the day of the indulgenced work; the Communion preferably on the same day; one must add some prayers for the Pope (many different ones are possible, but the Lord’s Prayer and Hail Mary are sufficient).

Final word on indulgences for today: a plenary indulgence frees one from all the temporal punishment due to sins; a partial frees one from some of it. A plenary indulgence may be gained only once on any day.

Here is a sermon which appears as the 2nd reading in the Office of Readings for today, by St. Bernard:

Why should our praise and glorification, or even the celebration of this feast day mean anything to the saints? What do they care about earthly honours when their heavenly Father honours them by fulfilling the faithful promise of the Son? What does our commendation mean to them? The saints have no need of honour from us; neither does our devotion add the slightest thing to what is theirs. Clearly, if we venerate their memory, it serves us, not them. But I tell you, when I think of them, I feel myself inflamed by a tremendous yearning.

Calling the saints to mind inspires, or rather arouses in us, above all else, a longing to enjoy their company, so desirable in itself. We long to share in the citizenship of heaven, to dwell with the spirits of the blessed, to join the assembly of patriarchs, the ranks of the prophets, the council of apostles, the great host of martyrs, the noble company of confessors and the choir of virgins. In short, we long to be united in happiness with all the saints. But our dispositions change. The Church of all the first followers of Christ awaits us, but we do nothing about it. The saints want us to be with them, and we are indifferent. The souls of the just await us, and we ignore them.

Come, brothers, let us at length spur ourselves on. We must rise again with Christ, we must seek the world which is above and set our mind on the things of heaven. Let us long for those who are longing for us, hasten to those who are waiting for us, and ask those who look for our coming to intercede for us. We should not only want to be with the saints, we should also hope to possess their happiness. While we desire to be in their company, we must also earnestly seek to share in their glory. Do not imagine that there is anything harmful in such an ambition as this; there is no danger in setting our hearts on such glory.

When we commemorate the saints we are inflamed with another yearning: that Christ our life may also appear to us as he appeared to them and that we may one day share in his glory. Until then we see him, not as he is, but as he became for our sake. He is our head, crowned, not with glory, but with the thorns of our sins. As members of that head, crowned with thorns, we should be ashamed to live in luxury; his purple robes are a mockery rather than an honour. When Christ comes again, his death shall no longer be proclaimed, and we shall know that we also have died, and that our life is hidden with him. The glorious head of the Church will appear and his glorified members will shine in splendour with him, when he forms this lowly body anew into such glory as belongs to himself, its head.

Therefore, we should aim at attaining this glory with a wholehearted and prudent desire. That we may rightly hope and strive for such blessedness, we must above all seek the prayers of the saints. Thus, what is beyond our own powers to obtain will be granted through their intercession.

He is getting into a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Our Lord went into the desert and if we are to imitate him, so must we. We all need to set some time aside to "walk" into the desert by first making time to be in silence. In today's age, that means shutting everything off for periods of time. When you attempt this the first time, you might find that the appetite to know what is going on during every waking hour is an appetite in need of taming. If you don't control it, it controls you. I think Anthony Lilles offers some excellent foundation in this article.

I think I'll go tame that appetite for a while as I work. Time in silence, is time that can be spent with the Lord.
I think the Vatican has proven to indeed be following what is being said on the web nowadays. From Vatican Radio (bold mine, as are comments bracketed in red):

(31 Oct 09 - RV) Vatican Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi has issued the following clarification of the announced Apostolic Constitution regarding personal ordinariates for Anglican entering into full communion with the Catholic Church:

"There has been widespread speculation, based on supposedly knowledgeable remarks by an Italian correspondent Andrea Tornielli, that the delay in publication of the Apostolic Constitution regarding Personal Ordinariates for Anglicans entering into full communion with the Catholic Church, announced on October 20, 2009, by Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is due to more than “technical” reasons. According to this speculation, there is a serious substantial issue at the basis of the delay, namely, disagreement about whether celibacy will be the norm for the future clergy of the Provision. [Stop for a moment here and just ponder how speculation, which may not be true and is taken as fact, can cause harm to an effort by the Holy See. That is why it is important to nip this kind of thing while in the budding stage. We will probably see more of this.]

Cardinal Levada offered the following comments on this speculation: “Had I been asked I would happily have clarified any doubt about my remarks at the press conference. There is no substance to such speculation [ouch]. No one at the Vatican has mentioned any such issue to me. The delay is purely technical in the sense of ensuring consistency in canonical language and references. The translation issues are secondary; the decision not to delay publication in order to wait for the ‘official’ Latin text to be published in Acta Apostolicae Sedis was made some time ago [and the chosen date fell on the feast of St. Paul of the Cross - founder of the Passionists, who prayed for over 50 years for the conversion of England!!! Hence, the date certainly had purpose and if the heart of the Apostolic Constitution was done, why wait?]

The drafts prepared by the working group, and submitted for study and approval through the usual process followed by the Congregation, have all included the following statement, currently Article VI of the Constitution:

§1 Those who ministered as Anglican deacons, priests, or bishops, and who fulfill the requisites established by canon law and are not impeded by irregularities or other impediments may be accepted by the Ordinary as candidates for Holy Orders in the Catholic Church. In the case of married ministers, the norms established in the Encyclical Letter of Pope Paul VI Sacerdotalis coelibatus, n. 42 and in the Statement “In June” are to be observed. Unmarried ministers must submit to the norm of clerical celibacy of CIC can. 277, §1.

§2. The Ordinary, in full observance of the discipline of celibate clergy in the Latin Church, as a rule (pro regula) will admit only celibate men to the order of presbyter. He may also petition the Roman Pontiff, as a derogation from can. 277, §1, for the admission of married men to the order of presbyter on a case by case basis, according to objective criteria approved by the Holy See.

This article is to be understood as consistent with the current practice of the Church, in which married former Anglican ministers may be admitted to priestly ministry in the Catholic Church on a case by case basis. With regard to future seminarians, it was considered purely speculative whether there might be some cases in which a dispensation from the celibacy rule might be petitioned. For this reason, objective criteria about any such possibilities (e.g. married seminarians already in preparation) are to be developed jointly by the Personal Ordinariate and the Episcopal Conference, and submitted for approval of the Holy See.”

Cardinal Levada said he anticipates the technical work on the Constitution and Norms will be completed by the end of the first week of November".

Bulletin inserts sent to churches nationwide

Dramatic graphic drives home point that abortion is not health care

Solution: Language to guarantee federal money won’t pay for elective abortions

WASHINGTON—In an extraordinary call to Catholics to prevent health care reform from being derailed by the abortion lobby, the United Sates Conference of Catholic Bishops has sent bulletin inserts to almost 19,000 parishes across the country.

"Health care reform should be about saving lives, not destroying them," the insert states. It urges readers to contact Senate leaders so they support efforts to "incorporate longstanding policies against abortion funding and in favor of conscience rights" in health reform legislation.

"If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed," it adds.

The insert highlights the Stupak Amendment from Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) that, it states, "addresses essential pro-life concerns on abortion funding and conscience rights."

"Help ensure that the Rule for the bill allows a vote on the amendment," the insert states. "If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed."

A dramatic ad of a pregnant woman notes that the Hyde Amendment, which passed in 1976, has prevented federal funds from paying for elective abortions, yet healthcare reform bills that are advancing violate this policy. The ad message: "Tell Congress: Remove Abortion Funding and Mandates from Needed Health Care Reform."

The insert also directs readers to www.usccb.org/healthcare.

Bulletin inserts were distributed to dioceses October 29, the day Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) unveiled the House health care reform bill and in expectation that they will show up in parishes in early November. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the USCCB; Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, chair of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-life Activities; Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City, chair of the Committee on Migration; and Bishop William Murphy of Rockville, Centre, New York, chair of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development urged fellow bishops to promote this campaign in their dioceses.

"The bishops want health care reform, but they recoil at any expansion of abortion," said Helen Osman, USCCB Secretary for Communications, who helped organize the campaign. "Most Americans don’t want to pay for other people’s abortions via health care either. This impasse on the road to reform of health care can be broken if Congress writes in language that assures that the Hyde Amendment law continues to guide U.S. federal spending policy."

The Catholic bishops have a long history of support for health care reform based on its teaching that health care is essential for human life and dignity and on its experience providing health care and assisting those without coverage.

I subscribe to the weekly Michigan Catholic in print because not all of it's content is shared online. However, this article was. This is just too cool. Many are probably unaware of the salt mine in Detroit. Apparently, His Excellency has no fear of riding down a small shaft into the bowels of the earth.

Archbishop Vigneron blesses new shrine in Detroit salt mines
by Jared Field

Detroit- Clad in a black miner's jacket and sky blue hard hat, Archbishop Allen Vigneron descended 1,200 feet and 400 million years into the salt of the earth Oct. 22.

The archbishop blessed the newly crafted statue and shrine to St. Barbara, the patroness of miners, at the base of the hoist - the only portal in or out - at the Detroit Salt Company on the city's southwest side, Michigan's lone rock salt mine.

"We must be disposed and appreciate what this means," Archbishop Vigneron told a group of about 30 miners. "When the Church blesses a statue for people to use, to pray at, we do this because when we look at this statue we see somebody who followed Christ. And we, like that saint, will seek to please Christ.

"Those saints are our friends. They pray for us; they remember us and help us with their love."

Archbishop Vigneron went on to say:

"I hope that every time you see this statue as you come to work, I hope it's a reminder to you that you can live in a way of holiness. A man, a woman, doesn't have to be in a convent or a monastery ... in order to be holy. God wants all of us to be holy, and you can live a life of holiness as you work in a mine. You can do God's will; you can glorify him by the integrity of your work, the hard work you offer, and the justice by which you treat one another."

I'm just passing this along to you, with the hopes that you will pass it along to a lot of other people because....that's what Catholic bloggers do when a paper like the New York Times declines to publish something from the archbishop of New York. First, it is introduced on the archdiocesan website thus:

Anti-Catholicism

October 29, 2009

The following article was submitted in a slightly shorter form to the New York Times as an op-ed article. The Times declined to publish it. I thought you might be interested in reading it.

Now for the op-ed piece by +Dolan

FOUL BALL!

October is the month we relish the highpoint of our national pastime, especially when one of our own New York teams is in the World Series!

Sadly, America has another national pastime, this one not pleasant at all: anti-catholicism.

It is not hyperbole to call prejudice against the Catholic Church a national pastime. Scholars such as Arthur Schlesinger Sr. referred to it as “the deepest bias in the history of the American people,” while John Higham described it as “the most luxuriant, tenacious tradition of paranoiac agitation in American history.” “The anti-semitism of the left,” is how Paul Viereck reads it, and Professor Philip Jenkins sub-titles his book on the topic “the last acceptable prejudice.”

If you want recent evidence of this unfairness against the Catholic Church, look no further than a few of these following examples of occurrences over the last couple weeks:
Walker Nickless of Souix City thinking it would make it easier for people to read the 16 page document. However, it has not proven practical with my many other duties.

I'm going to leave you with the opening of the next section in which the bishop explains the pastoral priorities he sets out for the diocese. While that which preceded this was rich and full of background information on how we got where we are following Vatican II, what comes now is the heart of the letter.

This particular pastoral priority runs about two pages in the actual document. I encourage people to read the rest of his letter. Print it out and read a little from it each day - the humble will find it heartwarming.

It's noteworthy to point out that with this letter, Bishop Nickless is providing a vision for his diocese, not a set of rules. What will be interesting to watch is further communications and columns in weeks, months and years to come in support of these priorities.

IV. Pastoral Priorities for the Diocese of Sioux City

1. We must renew our reverence, love, adoration and devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament, within and outside of Mass. A renewal of Eucharistic Spirituality necessarily entails an ongoing implementation of the Second Vatican Council’s reform of the liturgy as authoritatively taught by the Church’s Magisterium, the promotion of Eucharistic Adoration outside of Mass, regular reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Eucharist and our Mother.

Go read the rest of the Pastoral Letter: Ecclesia Semper Reformanda

There are some places where you can view The 13th Day, including some locally, like Ss. Cyril & Methodius (October 30th).

See the locations listings here

I can't wait to see this myself, though, I don't believe I'm available for the viewing on the 30th.

Don’t miss Cardinal Francis George, Archbishop of Chicago and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, at 8 p.m. ET, Friday, Oct. 30, on EWTN’s “The World Over Live” with Host Raymond Arroyo. He will discuss the “new atheism” and the necessity of the church creating a “new culture” to compete with growing secularism; repairing the Church’s perceived loss of credibility in the wake of Notre Dame scandal, the Kennedy funeral and the clergy sex abuse crisis; Christian/Muslim dialogue; Pope Benedict’s outreach to the Anglican community – and much more.

Just a reminder, you can watch the World Over Live online via the EWTN website if you don't have cable.
