'Avatar' broke 'Titanic's' overseas record

After six rounds on the foreign circuit, "Avatar" on the weekend became the biggest-grossing offshore title in movie history.

The James Cameron mega-budget blockbuster rolled up an overseas cume through Sunday of $1.288 billion, exceeding by $46 million "Titanic's" 13-year international boxoffice record of $1.242 billion. The record actually fell Saturday, as predicted.

The latest No. 1 weekend tally was $107 million grossed from 11,800 screens in 111 markets. It was the sixth consecutive weekend that "Avatar" grossed more than $100 million on the foreign circuit.

Among the key territories on the weekend were: France (cume $123.3 million), Germany ($95.7 million), the U.K. ($92.9 million), South Korea ($79.5 million), Japan ($77.7 million), Australia ($77.1 million) and Spain ($76 million). "Avatar" is now the biggest grossing film of all time in China, Spain, Russia, Hong Kong and Chile. It is the biggest Hollywood film ever to play in India.

Still to be broken are "Titanic's" domestic boxoffice record ($600.8 million) and its worldwide cume ($1.843 billion). "Avatar" has grossed $552.8 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $1.8408 billion globally. Given "Avatar's" current boxoffice pace, it should beat "Titanic's" worldwide record early this week.

The latest gross numbers underscore yet again the importance of the foreign circuit playoff to "Avatar's" success. Nearly 70% of the film's worldwide revenues come from overseas. That's about the same as the 67% slice of "Titanic's" worldwide total gross that originated abroad.

Peculiar to "Avatar's" success is the latest wave of exhibition technology. At least 65% of its overseas boxoffice and nearly 80% of its domestic earnings derive from 3D venues, which charge the equivalent of several dollars more than conventional theatrical sites. IMAX locations worldwide playing "Avatar" have rolled up $134 million in 38 days at ticket prices at about $15 each.

Big contributors to "Avatar's" foreign success are China and Russia, two key territories that were not significant boxoffice factors when "Titanic" played overseas. On the weekend, "Avatar" secured $11.8 million in China, boosting the market cume to $102.3 million. In Russia, the weekend tally was $3.9 million for a market cume of $95.4 million.

Then there is the inflation factor. According to a formula developed by the department of U.S. Labor Statistics, "Titanic's" 1997 worldwide gross is currently worth at least $2.5 billion on an inflation adjusted basis, or $805 million domestic and $1.664 billion foreign.

The U.S. telecommunications company is the latest corporate sponsor to back away from the world's first billionaire athlete since he became engulfed in allegations of multiple extramarital affairs following a mysterious minor car accident outside his Florida home on November 27.

AT&T, which had previously said it was assessing its relationship with Woods, said in a brief statement on Thursday: "We are ending our sponsorship agreement with Tiger Woods and wish him well in the future."

Woods, believed to be the world's wealthiest athlete, estimated to earn about $100 million a year in endorsement deals before his troubles, confessed on December 11 to "infidelity" to his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren. He announced he would take an indefinite break from golf to save his marriage.

The scandal may have cost shareholders of companies endorsed by the world's No. 1 golfer $5 billion to $12 billion in losses, according to a study by two economics professors from the University of California, Davis.

"Our analysis makes clear that while having a celebrity of Tiger Woods' stature as an endorser has undeniable upside, the downside risk is substantial, too," one of the professors, Victor Stango of UC Davis Graduate School of Management, said in a statement released along with the study.

Some economic analysts, however, have questioned the accuracy of the UC Davis study, although they acknowledge that Woods' own marketable value as a subject for corporate endorsement has been badly hit by the scandal.

Sponsors who have revised their relationship with Woods include technology outsourcing and consulting firm Accenture Plc, which ended its endorsement, and Procter & Gamble Co's shaving products maker Gillette, which dropped the golfer from its marketing.

Some other companies, however, like American athletic shoe maker Nike Inc, have said they are standing by the golfer.

The scandal saw a parade of more than a dozen women -- from cocktail waitresses to porn stars -- come forward to say they had affairs with the married father of two.

Since the start of the scandal, Woods, who had previously carefully maintained a public image of a clean-living sports and family man, has kept out of sight of the media.

A spokesman for AT&T declined to give any details of its deal with Woods.

Speculation that she had a drug problem, eating disorder, heart condition, diabetes and even that the young actress had undergone several rounds of plastic surgery. From her lips being injected to make them appear larger and pouter, to a nose job and even a breast augmentation.

Hollywood puts a lot of pressure on women to always be beautiful and thin. Demi Moore veteran Hollywood actress just got into a spat with her Twitter followers about her not appearing youthful enough for them in some photos she posted on Twitter. Could this kind of pressure to appear perfect have contributed to Murphy’s tragic death? Could that have lead Murphy to feel like she need to appear perfect and under go some dangerous procedures or engage in some unhealthy life choices, when she was already fragile? During a sometimes tear-filled interview, an exhausted Monjack, 39, who hasn't slept since his mother-in-law found his wife collapsed in the bathroom early Sunday, said all he knows is what doctors told him at the hospital: She died of cardiac arrest, but they won't know details until after an autopsy. (A coroner's spokesperson said the results could take up to six weeks, for toxicology reports to be final.)

"My initial reaction to the autopsy was -- they're going to cut her open -- I couldn't bear it," Monjack said, weeping. "That would break her mother, but we realized we needed to know. I look forward to getting the results."

He added that his wife of three years did suffer from a heart murmur (mitral valve prolapse), which can cause fatigue, dizziness and irregular heartbeats -- but is generally not life threatening. Murphy didn't require medication to treat it, says Monjack.

But on Saturday, he said, his wife was ill, resting in bed all day suffering from laryngitis, which the actress treated with herbal tea, ginger and lemon.

"She was on herbal remedies that wouldn't speed up her heart," Monjack said. "There was nothing here that could endanger her; there was prescription medication in the house for her female time and some cough syrup. That was it."

Asked point-blank if a drug overdose was a possible cause of death, Monjack replied, "I can get rid of that one right now," he said.

Last Saturday, the couple just relaxed in bed, watching three movies as Murphy prepared to cast her vote as a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. They ordered Brittany's favorite takeout -- Thai food -- and ate soup prepared by Murphy's mother, Sharon, who has lived with them for 3½ years.

"She was tired and a little sad because she was sick," Monjack said about Brittany. "She wore her pink Beverly Hills Hotel robe and monkey pajamas. We saw It's Complicated, Public Enemy and The Princess and the Frog.

The couple were joined by Murphy's companion, a pet Maltese named Clara, a Christmas gift last year from Monjack that Murphy named after her favorite silent screen star, Clara Bow. "One of the saddest things is that Clara has looked everywhere for Brittany and can't find her," said Monjack.

Monjack, a photographer, first met Murphy on a photo shoot when she was 13 after she moved to Hollywood with her mother, Sharon. They began dating after being reintroduced at Murphy's 28th birthday party and married a year later.

"So many people have their views of us, but they never met us or sat down with us," he said. "I'm not perfect, but I don't think anyone is ... I am feeling beyond devastated. I was in love with Brittany and Brittany with me."

The couple had plans for 2010: Brittany would continue to work, but she wanted to get pregnant.

"She was an only child," said Monjack. "She wanted a baby. Her big dream next year was to have a child, and we talked about how he or she would look. She'd say, 'They'd better have your eyes and lips and my hair.' "

But Monjack did concede his wife was trying to get heavier. "She tried to gain weight but had one of those metabolisms -- a high metabolism -- but enjoyed food as much as anyone. I wish I could show all the receipts from the take out restaurants," he said.

"We are faced with this ridiculous reality that people out there believe she felt, 'Oh, poor me, I'm fat, I'm thin.' Brittany didn't see beauty as a physical thing, which I'm bloody lucky for," he said with a laugh. "I know there was a disparity in how we looked and I'm no movie star, but she always saw the person."

Monjack said he has been upset by some of the published reports.

"It's horrible -- the death of a beautiful young woman, a Hollywood icon; it has to be explained. It just can't be a tragic accident," he said, trying to explain the headlines. "We don't want to accept that a beautiful young wife and daughter woke up one morning and died a tragic death."

But he's most worried about his mother-in-law. "I don't know if she will ever recover, and I know when she reads all this nonsense about her son-in-law and her deceased daughter, her heart is breaking. She has lived with us and saw the love and support. I hope she stays -- I can't imagine my life without Sharon -- she's my link to Brittany."

Brittany Murphy was a hardworking actress who was juggling multiple movie projects in the months leading up to her unexpected death.

While none of the films boasted the big budgets of Murphy's "8 Mile" or "Sin City," directors who recently worked with the 32-year-old actress say she was dedicated, insightful and happy as she wrapped two indie thrillers and prepared to start shooting a romantic comedy next month.

Murphy was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after collapsing at her Hollywood Hills home Sunday morning. The county coroner's office is awaiting the results of toxicology and tissue tests before releasing an official cause of death.

Murphy spent the month of June shooting "Abandoned," a thriller in which she stars as a woman who embarks on a frantic search for her boyfriend when he disappears from a hospital after a routine treatment.

Director Michael Feifer said the actress was delightful to work with and dedicated to the project.

"She knew her material, and she was on her game," he said Tuesday. "She was professional. She was there for me. She was healthy."

The role required Murphy to sprint through a parking structure and run up and down stairs.

"She's such a pro and so good at her craft that she could turn it on and off as necessary," Feifer said. One minute she'd be immersed in a dramatic scene, the next she'd be joking around with the crew or playing with her white Maltese, which often accompanied her on set.

Her husband, Simon Monjack, was also on set, serving as Murphy's hair and makeup artist.

"The two of them really took care of each other," Feifer recalled. "He was her teddy bear, and she was just his little princess."

Murphy took on "Abandoned" just days after wrapping her role as a psychiatrist in the mystery thriller "Something Wicked." Executive producer Scott Chambers told the Los Angeles Times that though Murphy appeared frail, he was impressed with her work ethic.

"She looked ill, as much as 10 pounds underweight, and she's a small person to begin with," he said. "She easily could have made an excuse not to come to work, but she didn't. She said, 'I've got to get better, but I want to do this part.'"

She spent three weeks working on the film. Next, she was set for another thriller, "The Caller," but parted ways with the filmmakers last month amid rumors she was fired.

In January, she was to begin shooting the romantic comedy "Shrinking Charlotte." Writer-director Rene Eram told E! News that Murphy was "impressive" and professional, but looked very thin.

"I noticed that she had dropped a lot of weight in the last six months," he said.

The future of the three films is unclear. None have secured theatrical distribution.

"Abandoned," which also stars Dean Cain, Mimi Rogers and Peter Bogdanovich, will complete post-production in about three months, Feifer said. He hopes the film will be released in 2010, but producers want to be sensitive about the timing.

"We don't want it shown in a bad light and don't want it to look like anybody's trying to make any money on her passing away," he said. "It's a very fragile situation."

Post-production work also continues on "Something Wicked," which could begin festival screenings in the spring. Chambers said the Murphy family's wishes may be considered and could result in postponements of those screenings.

Eram said he hopes to recast Murphy's part in "Shrinking Charlotte."

Meanwhile, the county coroner's office is investigating how the celebrity Web site TMZ obtained details on prescription drugs contained in an investigator's report on Murphy's death. TMZ declined to say how it got the confidential report, which notes that numerous bottles of prescription medications were found in Murphy's name at the home where she collapsed. The medications ranged from depression and anti-anxiety meds to painkillers.

Los Angeles police detectives have said their initial inquiry found no evidence of wrongdoing. Police and the coroner's office continue to investigate the death — and now the leak of confidential information.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said he's concerned about other information about Murphy's death being released before his office issues its conclusions in four to six weeks.

Actress Brittany Murphy, known for her roles in films such as "Clueless" and "8 Mile," died after suffering a cardiac arrest at her home, police and hospital officials said. She was 32.

Murphy's mother discovered the star slumped unconscious in a shower at her home in Los Angeles before her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, called emergency services, entertainment website TMZ.com reported.

The actress was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills where she was confirmed dead at 10:04 am (1804 GMT), spokeswoman Sally Stewart said. No other information was released by the hospital.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were at Murphy's home asking preliminary questions, police confirmed. Investigators later said foul play was not suspected in the death.

Murphy's family meanwhile appealed for privacy.

"In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy," read a statement released by the actress's spokeswoman.

News of Murphy's death comes after a medical drama involving her husband Monjack last month, when an ambulance was called to a Los Angeles airport arrival gate as the couple returned from Puerto Rico.

On that occasion, it was the actress's husband who was rushed to hospital. Reports said the couple had been returning to Los Angeles after Murphy was thrown off the set of a movie and fired for difficult behavior.

Murphy made her name in television sitcoms during the 1990s before grabbing notable roles in "Clueless," "Girl, Interrupted," "Sin City," "8 Mile" and "Happy Feet."

She provided the voice of Luanne Platter in more than 200 episodes of the animated television sitcom "King Of The Hill."

Born in Atlanta, Murphy was raised by her mother, Sharon, in New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles.

The star scored her first role in 1991 on the television show "Blossom," before landing a starring role that same year in "Drexell's Class."

She also had recurring roles in "Sister, Sister," "Party of Five" and "Boy Meets World."

In addition to acting, Murphy also enjoyed a successful foray into music, collaborating with British DJ Paul Oakenfold on the single "Faster Kill Pussycat," a club hit that reached number one on the dance charts.

In the dancing penguin animated hit film "Happy Feet," she performed a cover version of Queen's "Somebody to Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland."

Before marrying Monjack in 2007, she was engaged to talent manager Jeff Kwatinetz and previously dated actor Ashton Kutcher.

Kutcher, now married to actress Demi Moore, offered condolences on Sunday via his page on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon," the actor wrote. "See you on the other side kid."

Murphy's co-star from "Clueless," Alicia Silverstone, said she had always felt connected to the actress even though they had not stayed in close touch.

"I feel love in my heart for her -- and hope she is at peace. This is truly sad," Silverstone told People magazine.

"I loved working with Brittany. She was so talented, so warm and so sweet."

The Globes, when it came to best original song, largely stayed mainstream, passing up selections from Mary J. Blige ("Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire") and newcomer Sad Brad Smith ("Up in the Air"), two songs considered favorites for scoring nominations in the like-minded category for the Oscars, to instead recognize the likes of U2 and Paul McCartney.

Rounding out the best original song category for the Globes is a film-only cut from the cinematic interpretation of the musical "Nine," a traditional ballad from "Avatar," and "The Weary Kind" from the music-centered "Crazy Heart." The latter brings a new name to the Hollywood gala in singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham, and is receiving a large, late-season push from Fox Searchlight.

Don't look to the Globes as a foreshadowing of the Oscars, as the latter are typically a bucket of unpredictability. Academy voters nominated only three songs for the 2009 gala, including two from "Slumdog Millionaire," and the year prior choose three songs (three!) from Disney's modern fairytale "Enchanted."

The Golden Globes, however, have no trouble filling out the category, and Pop & Hiss handicaps it below.

Too big to be ignored: The marquee names in this season's music and film awards race are clearly U2 and McCartney. But neither should be the shoo-in that was Bruce Springsteen's self-titled track from "The Wrestler." McCartney's "I Want to Come Home" is a piano-based slow dance, with touches of string orchestration, and it's aimed squarely at your heart. McCartney's vocals are as soft and comforting as a holiday-season fireplace and some homemade gingerbread. What it lacks in excitement, it more than makes up for with coziness. If the film it graces, "Everybody's Fine," was one that was being taken seriously, the song might have been more than holiday gooeyness.

U2's "Winter" from "Brothers" takes a more serious route. "Now I'm 25," sings Bono, "trying to stay alive, in the corner of the world, with no clear enemies to fight." U2's Bono and "Brothers" director Jim Sheridan are regular collaborators, as the star has worked on his "In the Name of the Father" and "In America." The band's "Winter," however, could have used some of the gospel atmospheres of the act's 2009 effort "No Line on the Horizon," as it's a snails-paced somber number with some oh-so-serious, look-at-me flashes of rhythm. This is awards-season solemness by the book.

The spoiler: Though "Crazy Heart" won't be the kind of music/film sensation that was "Once," it should prove to be a December surprise. With Jeff Bridges playing a down-on-his luck country musician, and respected composer-writer T Bone Burnett ("O Brother, Where Art Thou?") supplying the music, "Crazy Heart" won't be overlooked come Oscar time for the original song category. Showcase song "The Weary Kind" is an artful choice to win this category, even if it's a little on the sleepy side. Rootsy singer-songwriter Bingham shares a songwriting credit, and his scruffy, whiskey-stained vocals are the centerpiece, although there are brief touches of a country slide scattered among its finger-picked base. Like the other two songs mentioned in this post, it's a downbeat offering, but one that's at least more rugged than emotional.

The standards: A massive James Cameron film with a ballad sung by a pop/R&B star, "Avatar" and its "I See You" threaten to be completely unavoidable over the next few weeks. There's plenty of A-list names behind the song, which was composed by James Horner and Simon Franglen. Kuk Harrell, of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" fame, shares a songwriting credit. But make no mistake: This is a massive end-credits song for an adventure film, complete with the big vocal build from Lewis that such a track requires. There's something charmingly old-fashioned about its grand orchestral burst in its final minute, but it lacks the hook to become the wedding party staple that was "Titanic's" "My Heart Will Go On."

As for "Cinema Italiano" from "Nine," Kate Hudson handles herself well, and this is the only song in the category that actually bares a bit of fun, but it's still world music for the dinner-party set, and the token nod for the year's big musical.
