You Might Become Addicted - (Sweetened) Mint Tea

There’s nothing quite like summer, and even though you can easily make mint tea in winter months, I really only brew it in the warm weather season. Growing up, we always had tons of mint that was readily available to pick at our disposal and I learned how to make this when I was super young. It’s still a summertime favorite and I swear there is nothing better or more refreshing on a hot summer’s day.

Sweetened Mint Tea

Ingredients:

64 OZ (8 Cups) Water
8 Fresh Mint Springs (if you aren’t growing your own mint, it’s available at your local market)
4 Tea Bags
¼ C Sugar (or to taste)

Add water and fresh mint to a pan and bring to boil. Remove from heat. Add tea bags and sugar, stir until dissolved. Let steep for a minimum of five minutes. Remove mint and tea bags. Pour into pitcher and cool. Serve over ice.

If you’d rather just make one cup (or adjust the recipe otherwise) just use one sprig per cup of water and of course, add sugar to taste.

All you fancy people can garnish with a few fresh mint leaves…I’m not that fancy. Ice and a glass are all I need for this sweet summer sipper. A few added bonuses….not only is this super inexpensive to whip up, mint is also known to aid in digestion and help quash nausea and headaches among other things.

One Skirt, Two Looks…Perfect for Day or Night!

So, surprisingly, I’ve never really done my own style posts. I write about fashion – on celebs, pieces I like, trends I’m into, etc. But, unlike other fashion bloggers, that’s where I stop. I have this terrible fear of the camera that defies logic. But, in the name of fashion, I’m throwing those fears aside and starting to photograph my favorite looks.

Most of my apparel I buy on a budget from places like Marshalls – and I’m one of “those people” who is pretty anal about the care of her garments, specifically my shoes. They are kept neatly in their boxes, complete with the tissue paper stuffing. Regardless, I’ll give you the deets of where I purchased each piece (and approximately how long ago). Here goes my first personal style post with looks centered around one of my favorite skirts!

I love this edgy look for evening or date night.

This Shredded Handbag is one of my favorites. I purchased it in the fall of 2008. It’s from Lolabean and is still available at some stores, but you likely have to do a search for it.

These suede peep toe studded booties are from Steve Madden circa winter 2008 (ish).

This Side Knot Necklace is available at my own boutique, currently on sale for $70. It’s heavy and gives off a “tangled” vibe. I love both of those qualities!

This skirt becomes perfect for day with a knotted tee and the changing up of the accessories.

All of these accessories fit the laid-back vibe I was going for and are available at 24-7 Style: Small Wave Bangle ($30) and Large Wave Bangle ($33)…both are Mother-of-Pearl. The Hannah Crossbody/Clutch ($130) is made from refurbished leather and suede.

I found these adorable Classified gladiator sandals at a cute boutique in Pittsburgh when visiting a friend in the summer of 2008. They were a steal, only around $25!

Here’s the scoop on the remaining pieces, not mentioned above:

The pleated mullet skirt I got at Target this past fall. I adore the deep tan with a hint of mauve color! Sorry, it’s no longer available. For my evening look, I’m wearing a tank from Old Navy, gosh, probably from 2007! The sequin detailing at the shoulders is discreet, yet gives it an edgy vibe. The belt is just a cheapy that came with a dress I purchased ages ago. The Swiss Army Ring is hard to pick up in these pictures, but I once again love it’s edgy vibe. You can find it at 24-7 Style for $33.

For my day look, I opted for a super casual heathered mauve Mossimo tee from Target. I’m addicted to them and stock up when they go on sale for $5! The necklaces are all vintage family heirlooms. My family has great taste!

Run Much? Check Out FitSeries from Koss!

I love, love, love this time of year for so many reasons, but one of them is due to the fact I can get out and run. In addition to my new favorite apps, Zombies, Run! and Charity Miles, I’ve been motivated to get moving thanks to my new FitSeries headphones from Koss. Recently, with help from five-time Olympian and gold medalist Dara Torres, they’ve come out with their FitClips and FitBuds, designed by women catering specifically to the active woman. Ideal for use while running, walking, cycling, etc., both are sweat resistant, ultra lightweight and extremely durable. Not to mention the fact they come with amazing sound quality as well.

My personal favorite were the FitClips. I’d only used clips a few times prior to these, mainly because they always pinched my ears. Somehow after working out, my ears ended up being more sore than the rest of my body. However, for the sake of helping woman-kind, I decided to try these anyway. Because of their soft, flexible nature, I’m happy to report that there was no pinching, or pain and these stayed comfortably in place during each of my 5-mile runs.

Even though I’m now partial toward the clips, the FitBuds were good as well. At 33% smaller than the average Koss earbud, they fit snuggly in place. Despite the smaller frame, I did notice these moved around a little bit on my runs. Don’t get me wrong, they weren’t falling out and it wasn’t distracting, just an observation.

Both come with three cushion sizes to help assure your perfect fit. I have a slew of earbuds stashed away in various places but I will now be turning to these to keep me entertained during my summer runs. Just in Time for Summer - Country Pasta Salad Recipe

I love a good pasta salad and this is one I grew up eating. Each summer my mom would gather the freshest vegetables from our garden and make this super quick and easy salad that is good as a side, but I typically make it for a meal. Not only does this pasta salad taste great, it’s relatively inexpensive as well.

Country Pasta Salad

Ingredients:

1 lb. Box Dry Pasta
2-4 cups fresh vegetables (any combination of cucumber, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, etc.)
1 C Miracle Whip
1 C Ranch Dressing
Parmesan Cheese to Garnish (Optional)
Fried Bacon or Bacon Bits to Garnish (Optional)

Cook pasta as you normally would. While cooking, wash and cut vegetables into bit size pieces. In small bowl, mix equal parts Miracle Whip and ranch. Set aside. When pasta is tender, drain. Run cold water over pasta until completely cool. Combine everything in one large bowl and stir until well mixed. You can serve immediately, but I find it better after being chilled for an hour or so. Garnish with parmesan and bacon (optional).

These are the proportions I use when making this salad as a meal and it would easily feed a family of 4-5. However, I use a nice large Pampered Chef mixing bowl with rubber lid that seals assuring the leftovers are just as good as they were the first time around. You can easily adjust the proportions to suit. As long as you use equal portions of Miracle Whip and ranch, you’ll be good to go!

Designer to Keep your Eye On–Josue Flores

I love discovering fun, new and interesting designers. While Diane von Furstenberg and Catherine Malandrino will always make my heart skip a beat, there’s something equally exciting about seeing someone start from the ground up, building both a brand and business, all while satisfying our fashion palettes with unique and impressive pieces. Such is the case of deaf fashion designer Josue Flores. Intrigued already aren’t you? Not only is he overcoming obstacles most new fashion designers have to endure – financial backing, creating inspiring pieces, etc. Josue is also overcoming physical challenges as well. I’m impressed!

His line, Josway, currently consists of dresses in fun prints, silhouettes and colors. My absolute favorite is this Capheira Dress ($150). The white dress with purple sequin embellishments is impeccably cut with its boat neck and cap sleeves. I love the pockets which give it a relaxed go-lucky vibe and unlike the model, I don’t think I need a purple wig to pull it off. I also adore how they styled it with red peep-toe pumps, showing how easy it is to mix colors and not be so matchy-matchy. The a-line skirt flows away from the hips, flattering an array of silhouettes.

Coming in at close second however is the fuscia Thalassa Dress ($200). I can’t help it…I’m attracted to sequins, what girl isn’t?!? And I love seeing them applied in this wavy diamond pattern over, and in combination with, a patterned lace, versus a block of sequin patches on the dress. The sequin pattern helps to lengthen the body, and at 5’3”, I need all the lengthening I can get! The boat neck pairs perfectly with a back scoop. So cute!

Josue recently presented his collection at the Aquarium Fashion Show. Using deaf models from around the world, they strode the catwalk in brightly hued Lady Gaga-like wigs showing us all that regardless of the cards you’ve been dealt, a little perseverance combined with hard work and effort will take you to great places. Like any runway show, a few fantastical pieces added to the lure. In addition to their fun wigs, theatrical head gear was donned. Of course, on the rest of us, it would all come off as cray-cray, but it all played well into the “Aquarium” themed event. I adore the bold pops of colors he used on his various designs for the warm-weather season. Just what we need for spring and summer!

The event was held at Santa Ana Centennial Park in Santa Ana, California and even drew some attention from a few minor celebs. The always interesting (used here, “interesting” means girl we’d all kinda like to punch), Courtney Stodden was in attendance along with her equally interesting (and yes, I’m going for creepy in this instance) husband Doug Hutchinson. Actress turned hostess Erin Murphy also attended.

Be sure to take the time to learn more about upcoming designer Josue Flores and his Josway line of dresses. It’s heartwarming to see someone beating the odds all in the name of fashion!

Where Does Liv Tyler Apply Her C.O. Bigelow Musk Perfume Oil?

Liv Tyler recently revealed to Into the Gloss that her favorite perfume is in fact, the unpretentious looking C.O. Bigelow Musk Perfume Oil. She shared that she applies little drops onto her fingers and then dabs under her arms as well as inside her belly button. Her theory is that if you put it where you heat up, the scent stays with you all day, “and I’m telling you, every day, five people will ask what I’m wearing,” she told the beauty site.

DIY: Brooke Burke’s DWTS Braided Chignon

“Brooke Burke Charvet’s look for Dancing with the Stars performance finals was inspired by her dramatic Michael Costello gown,” reveals celeb hairstylist Jonathan Hanousek.	He went on, “Her pompadour faux hawk with an oblong braided chignon helped balance the strong shoulders and textures of the dress.” Both were gorgeous!

Brooke Burke Charvet’s hair was amaze on the Dancing with the Stars finale a few weeks back. The look would work for any of your big upcoming events as well. Her celeb hairstylist, Jonathan Hanousek gives us the the “how-to’s” on achieving the style for yourself! Gracias Jonathan!

First, I layered Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray and White Sands UnderCover Styling Spray on damp hair.
From the outside corners of the eyes, make two clean parts back to the crown and pin the section out of the way. Then, blow dry the rest of the hair with a medium round brush to create a smooth finish.
Take the sides of the hair and gather into a ponytail in the back. Fasten with a small rubber band. Clean up fly-aways using a fine tooth tail comb and White Sands Infinity Hairspray.
Using a small round brush blow dry the top of the hair concentrating on lifting the roots for volume. Spray a few pumps of Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray all over to smooth and add shine.
With your fingers and the blow dryer, push the hair up and towards the center to create your pomp. Use a few pumps of White Sands Infinity Hairspray to hold the shape.
Place crisscross bobby pins down the center of the pomp and roll one side over to conceal, fastening with invisible hairpins. Think loose French twist and look in the mirror and adjust the shape that’s best for your face. It’s best if it is not too symmetrical, it will look more interesting.
Let the rest of the hair cover the first ponytail. Fasten with a couple of pins. Then gather all the remaining hair and create a single braid.
Twist the braid up, tuck in the ends and fasten with bobby and invisible pins. Lock everything in with White Sands Stuck Up Mega Hold Hairspray.

World’s Best (and Easiest) Coffee Cake!

I know “World’s Best” is a bold claim, but this is good stuff! I actually remember the day I found out there wasn’t actually any coffee in coffee cake…kind of like finding out Santa Clause wasn’t real. For some reason it was such a disappointment as my mom explained to me that it just “went” good with coffee. Regardless, this has always been one of my favorites and has quickly become a favorite to everyone I’ve made it for. I remember one time coming back from a girls night out as we randomly decided baking a cake would be a good idea. We were such vultures, we skipped the plates in lieu of the pan, got some forks and dug in. This semi-homemade recipe isn’t just perfect with coffee, but milk as well, and I have no-doubt it will quickly become one of your favorites.

Cake Ingredients:

1 Box Yellow Cake Mix (with Pudding in the Mix)
½ C Brown Sugar
½ C Flour
2 TBL Melted Butter
Dash of Cinnamon

For Icing:

1 C Powdered Sugar
2 TBL Milk
Dash of Vanilla

Mix the cake according to the box instructions and set aside. In small bowl combine brown sugar, flour, butter and cinnamon. Mash with a fork until mixed, creating “crumbs.” Pour ½ to ¾ of the batter into greased 9x13 pan. Top with a layer of crumbs (about half). Pour the rest of the batter over the crumbs. Top with remaining crumbs. FYI, it’s ok if the first layer of crumbs isn’t completely covered up by the second layer of batter. Bake according to package instructions.

When cake is finished, remove from oven to cool. As it’s cooling, mix icing until smooth. To finish, drizzle over cake.

Just a few ingredients probably already in your cupboard are all you need for this delicious Coffee Cake!

The finished product! Moist and delicious. Perfect to share with friends and family over coffee or milk!

I have a love-hate relationship with foundation. I love that it can make my skin look amazing. I hate that it only looks that way for an hourish. I love when I find a color that matches my skin tone. I hate when it shows up all over my tees. I love that excitement I feel when I find one promising the world. I hate the letdown when I realize, like all the others, it doesn’t live up to it’s hype. Ever feel that way when foundation shopping? Well dolls, I have a feeling you’ll be as enamored as I am with the line from Advanced Mineral Makeup!

First, Advanced Mineral makes it easy to find your perfect shade. It’s as simple as choosing one of four celebs that your skin tone most matches. You should also know, the line was created for use in TV and films. The stars of NCIS and Greys Anatomy have all worn it to look they’re lovely best. Pressed Powder Compacts ($38.50): This is maybe my new summer favorite! It functions as a 4-in-1: foundation, concealer, powder and SPF. But why I really love it? It stays on all the live-long day, it’s transfer proof and water resistant. So, the sticky humid days when your makeup gives the impression that your face is melting? Well, they’re non-existent with this. Trust me, I’ve challenged Mother Nature several times this summer and my Pressed Powder has won each contest!

Loose Powder Foundation ($35): Another 4-in1, but this provides a bit more coverage. Perfect for a big date or other event when you need to be flawless. Once again, it will last all day, and is both transfer proof and water resistant. Love it!

Liquid Mineral Foundation ($44): Even though I fell in love with the powders, I’ve always been partial to liquids, and this did not disappoint. It somehow sinks into skin, almost like you’re applying moisturizer, but with the coverage you want from a foundation. Amaze! It’s touted as being weightless (that’s probably the “sinking in” feeling I tried to describe) and once again, it’s transfer proof. The Vegan makeup is packed with a list of healthy ingredients, including Antioxidants, Titanium-Dioxide (natural sunscreen), Vitamins A and E and also Rosemary. What better way to celebrate a upcoming great American summer than with stars and stripes emblazoned across your tee? The fact that it it’s the shape of a cross makes it even more lovable to me. I’m adoring the “faith based fashion” trend right now! Find the details on each piece here.

Isn’t this gorgeous? It’s a real flower dipped in 18k gold! One commenter asked if it was fragile. While I wouldn’t step on it, it’s much more durable than you think. They used a lot of gold on it!

OOTD! I got my canvas Keds boat shoes forever ago and love pulling them out each summer. That corduroy bag is called Feather from Jumeau Bags. Love it!

Tips to Plan a Girl’s Getaway this Summer!

I’ve been doing some reminiscing recently and definitely have an Empire State of Mind. Several years ago I took a trip with some of my dearest friends to the Big Apple. I often times get asked by others what they should do when traveling there. Ummm…it’s NYC!! Do anything you want! The way we chose to travel would drive some people nuts, but we didn’t go with much of an itinerary. We wanted to explore and see where the days took us. We were led to some of the best times of our lives. Here are some things I would most definitely recommend if you’re planning a trip to New York, or really, any city:

Head to the ballpark! Me being a huge Yankees fan, we definitely hit up the Bronx to see the Pinstripes. Ahhh…memories. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, cute men in cute uniforms are never ever a bad thing!
Don’t have a plan! Don’t get me wrong, we had a general schedule. The Yankees game for instance, dinner at Buddakan, but for the most part, we decided to tackle “areas” and see where the days and nights took us. We did a Movie/TV tour. We did some day-drinking at the Trump Tower. We did some night drinking…well, lots of places. The point being, the freedom we had without a minute-by-minute schedule made it that much more fun.
Take lots of pictures. Duh, right?!? Instead of “scrapbooking,” which I love but don’t have any time for, I bought an album that allowed space to write beside each picture. Months later, we got together, each grabbed a different colored pen and we wrote exactly what we were thinking in those moments. It’s priceless!!
Make sure whatever you decide to do, allows for some much needed catching up with your girlfriends. Time flies…the relationships you cherish should never be taken for granted! As we all know, one day we wake up and even though things may have changed for the better, we still can’t go back to “those times.” Those wonderful times become a memory instead of a reality. Just cherish them. ♥♥♥

The Perfect DIY Space-Saver for Spring Jackets!

If you live in a small place with limited space, you can identify with my storage problems. I’m always looking for ways to find some extra room, or make space where none was available. Which brings me to this easy, and relatively inexpensive DIY for my spring jackets. It’s nothing earth shattering as these are, essentially the plastic 3M Hooks. But, when I went to look for them, I was completely annoyed that the pretty “Decorative” ones were double the price! Ree-dic. Here was my solution:

1. I purchased a set of 8 3M Command Medium Hooks in White for around $12 (the “decorative” ones in the nice colors are around $24).
2. I already had a can of Krylon Fusion for Plastic Spray Paint. Any spray paint will likely do, but if you use a regular one, you will likely need to sand your hooks before painting. Kind of a pain! One 12-ounce can is about $8 and you will be able to use for tons of other projects!
3. I laid all of my hooks inside a sweater-style box…the kind that pile up after Christmas.
4. From there, you guessed it, I sprayed each evenly and let set for an hour.
5. These attached pretty easily to my wood closet doors, but they should work on just about anything without damaging.

My total cost was $12, $20 if you need paint. Or $24, if you just prefer to by the decorative hooks. Regardless, I had so much more room in my closet after removing these jackets!

Ingredients for the Perfect Five Minute Face!

A five-minute-face is essential in summer isn’t it? There is too much to do to be bothered with full-on makeup, especially in the heat. Besides, we’re finally starting to get some color again, so especially during the day, it isn’t necessary to use as much makeup and still achieve perfect results. Below are my favorites for achieving a quick summer glow in as little amount of time as possible.

1. I prep my skin with moisturizer and then slather SkinFare Topical Nourishment ($9.99) under my eyes. I use this organic, coconut oil based stick day and night to ward off wrinkles but you can also use it to help heal scrapes and bruises among other things.

2. On really warm and/or humid days, I skip primer and foundation opting instead for Advanced Mineral Pressed Powder in Eva ($38.50). It stays on all day, is transfer proof and water resistant. Plus, it’s full of all sorts of healthy things like Vitamin A and E natural antioxidants, while being free from talc, starch and other unhealthy ingredients.

3. In the winter I use New York Color’s Color Wheel Mosaic Face Powder in All Over Bronze Glow ($4.99) to give my pastey skin some color. In the summer, it’s the perfect amount of of color for contouring my cheeks.

4. Mineral Eye Shadow Trio in Tuscany from Raw Natural Beauty ($35) are sheer, shimmering colors that are just right for the season.

5. Maybelline’s The Rocket™ Volum’ Express® (under $8) is fab. Lots of volume with no clumping always gets my vote!

6. I’m smitten with Wei East’s Lip Sensation Daily Wear ($12). With 12-hour staying power, reacts with individual skin chemistry it creates your own custom color. On me, it’s the perfect sweet shade of pink (shown). I apply to dry lips and finish with a gloss…

7. I actually use Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Balm in a super cute tin. Apparently they’ve stopped making it, but this Sunset Kiss in Orange Rush ($9) looks fairly similar.

Best and Worst Dressed at the BBMA’s

Last night’s 2013 Billboard Music Awards didn’t disappoint in terms of fashion and as expected, there were great big hits and major misses. Who made your lists?

Best Dressed #1 – Jennifer Lopez

J. Lo has been rocking Zuhair Murad at nearly all of her recent red carpet events and why wouldn’t she? She’s found a good thing, why bother changing it? With a gown dripping in gold and a deep plunging neckline, she smartly kept her accessories to a minimal. No one can do a nude lip and smokey eye like Jennifer Lopez and her face, once again, looks flawless. Her hair is fine, although I kind of want to scrunch the roots a little….I love when her hair has some body!

Best Dressed #2: Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is proof that a breakup can do a girl good! The neon accents on the Atelier Versace gown are on-point and the peek-a-boo swoosh shows enough skin without overdoing it. However, I’m not really feelin’ her silver Jimmy Choo shoes and would have loved to see her donning these Sergio Rossi All Over Strass Pumps instead. That said, the messy pony and cat eyes are absolute perfection!

Best Dressed #3: Taylor Swift

Gomez's BFF and country crooner Taylor Swift easily pulls off the short hemline on this blue sequin Zuhair Murad, balancing it with long sleeves. Gomez and Swift must have done their shoe shopping together because I’m not a fan of her sandals either. They feel too heavy for the ensemble. I found another pair of Sergio Rossi’s, the Sergio Rossi Strass T-Strap Sandals that are just as glam without the weighty platform.

Worst Dressed #1: Z LaLa

First off, I’m not even sure who this Z LaLa person is. Seriously. I had to Google her. Second off, I don’t care if you’re Z LaLa or Lady Gaga or Nikki Minaj. When you wear a costume down a red carpet, all I think is, “what is this poor girl hiding from?” I can tolerate costumes on Halloween and even during performances, but when your real life is cause to don a costume, it just makes me sad for you.

Worst Dressed #2: Nayer

When the best looking thing on the red carpet is your dog, well Nayer, you may need a new stylist. And actually, why exactly did you bring your dog? I’m an animal person and am certain that the poor thing didn’t want to be there. I don’t really even have to say anything about the outfit…we all know a hot mess when we see it.

Worst Dressed #3: Miley Cyrus

I’ve actually really enjoyed watching Miley Cyrus come into her own in the fashion world. She’s taken some risks that have paid off. Sadly, this crocheted harlequin patterned Balmain onesie isn’t one of them. Fortunately for her there were the above two fashion-tragedies or she would have taken home the dis-honor of Worst Dressed at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards!

And no worries….if you don’t live in NYC, La Bottega has graciously provided the recipe for The Porch Swing, a cocktail sure to impress your friends. Bottoms up!

The Porch Swing

1.5 oz. bulleit bourbon
10 mint leaves
1 oz. ginger simple syrup (to make in-house: heat sugar and water in a saucepan with shaved ginger chunks until sugar dissolves; let cool and strain)
1 oz. lemon juice

Shake all ingredients well and pour over ice in a highball or large rocks glass.
