Towards a new Middle East. Will Democracy prevail?

-- The Battle of Homs was particularly deadly for the belligerents on both sides, as well as for civilians.

During the first three days, the Syrian Arab Army was warded off by the rebels that blocked all entry points to their neighborhood. They destroyed all approaching armored vehicles using Milan missiles. Ultimately, the Syrian Arab Army had to resort to multiple rocket launchers to bombard the Milan firing posts, at the risk of causing heavy civilian casualties.

Each Milan shooting station, located on every street going into Bab Amr costs 100,000 euros, and each missile about 12,000 euros. The missiles were fired at a rate two to three rounds per minute. This equipment is manufactured by North Aviation (France) and MBB (Germany). It is supposed to have been given to the Free "Syrian" Army by the United Kingdom and Germany.

In April 2011, Doha officials acknowledged that Qatar had delivered Milan missiles to Libyan insurgents from Benghazi to help overthrow the Arab Jamahiriya, by way of the UN resolution that allowed the delivery of "defensive weapons " (sic) to the Libyan opposition.

-- British and Qatari Special Forces have set up four centers of operation hedquarters for the Syrian rebels in the Homs district of Khaldiya, Bab Amro in the east; and Bab Derib and Rastan in the north. A foreign field hospital has been set up close by in Lebanon.Secret French weapons drops were discovered after they fell into the wrong hands. Syrian opposition sources say they receive weapons coming from the territory of Turkey and Jordan, The Washington Times newspaper reports. There were also unconfirmed reports that Western special forces directed air strikes from forward frontline positions and directed combat tactics.The Pentagon and its allies have proposed the creation of a humanitarian corridor in Syria- similar to the no-fly zone in Lybia- with a view to delivering supplies and humanitarian aid to Syrian civilians.

-- A recent UN draft resolution was vetoed in the Security Council by Russia and China, the two states that oppose foreign intervention into the country.

Όταν κανείς υποδύεται ρόλους σε κάποια σχέση του, θεωρείτε από πολλούς προβληματικό.
Ορισμένες φορές όμως αυτό μπορεί να μην είναι πρόβλημα, αλλά μέρος της λύσης του προβλήματος. Π.χ. όταν σε κάποια ερωτική μου σχέση κάνω τον ρόλο του θεραπευτή, μπορεί ναι μεν να με βάζει σε κάποια άλλη θέση απ' την πραγματική, αλλά αυτή η θέση να είναι τη δεδομένη στιγμή η πλέον κατάλληλη.

Αντίλογος: Μα είναι σχέση ισότιμη αυτή; Δεν είναι δική σου επιθυμία και μόνο; Έχεις τα απαιτούμενα προσόντα; Μα δεν χάνεται ο ερωτισμός;
Λόγος: Μα φυσικά και καλύπτει μία δική μου συνειδητή ανάγκη. Ο ερωτισμός δεν χάνεται και εαν χαθεί τότε δε σημαίνει ότι συντελέστηκε κάποιο λάθος στη σχέση. Μπορεί αυτός ο ρόλος να γίνει η αφορμή για κάτι σπουδαιότερο ή για κάτι διαφορετικό. Πάντως δεν θα έπρεπε να είναι κατ' ανάγκη εμπόδιο. Οι σχέσεις ερωτικές, φιλικές κλπ με το χρόνο και τα αντίστοιχα βιώματα αλλάζουν, μεταβάλλονται. Το να κρατηθεί μία σχέση το ίδιο ερωτική σε όλη τη διάρκειά της είναι μη φυσικό. Όλα μεταβάλλονται, έτσι και οι σχέσεις. Υπάρχουν σχέσεις στις οποίες είσαι ο πατέρας, η μητέρα, το παιδί, η ερωμένη, κ.ο.κ.
Τι σημαίνει να είσαι ο εαυτός σου; Μα και αυτοί οι ρόλοι δεν είναι κομμάτι του είναι σου;
Όμως εγώ θέλω τον πυρηνικό εαυτό μου και όχι ρόλους! Μα και αυτός ο εαυτός δεν είναι ο πραγματικός, ο πυρηνικός; Το είναι του καθένα από εμάς συμπεριλαμβάνει και αυτά τα στοιχεία, τους ρόλους. Το να κάνεις μία τομή και να πετάξεις τα μαλλιά, το δέρμα, τα νύχια και να φτάσεις να κρατήσεις τον πυρηνικό σου Είναι, δε σημαίνει οτι τότε και μόνο τότε έχεις φτάσει στο πραγματικό σου είναι. Είμαι και τα μαλλιά μου, και τα νύχια μου και το δέρμα μου. Η ουσία του Είναι μου εμπεριέχει όλα αυτά τα σωματικά στοιχεία, από τα πιο αναλώσιμα, μέχρι τα πιο ζωτικά.
Επομένως, ο κάθε ρόλος εαν είναι συνειδητός δεν είναι και κατ ανάγκη προβληματικός.

Ημέρα Τρίτη, με αρκετή βροχή, στις αρχές του φθινοπώρου, ένας νεαρός άντρας, γυμνός με χείλη πρησμένα, άνοιξε το στόμα του και είπε την τελευταία του λέξη:

-Αθώος…!

Τρεις και δέκα το μεσημέρι στην οδό Ευκλείδου 18 τρία περιπολικά της Άμεσης Δράσης κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους. Οι σειρήνες των περιπολικών και οι κραυγές από το δεύτερο όροφο της πολυκατοικίας ξυπνούν την γειτονιά.

-Αυτοκτονία… σίγουρα Νίκο. Ο αυτόχειρας έχει αφήσει και σημείωμα:

Χορεύω τη νύχτα και πεθαίνω την ημέρα… Δε μου απομένει τίποτα, εκτός της μουσικής. Και τι να την κάνω τη μουσική τη μέρα; Συγνώμη.

Το σημείωμα δεν αφήνει καμία αμφιβολία.

- Και οι δύο πάστες στο ψυγείο; Και η ερωμένη που φωνάζει ότι θα παντρευόντουσαν το καλοκαίρι;

- Καλά από υποσχέσεις… εδώ έχουμε σημείωμα! “πεθαίνω την ημέρα”, όπου και πέθανε… μεσημέρι… “Συγνώμη” για τους δικούς του… Και δεν έχουμε άλλα αποτυπώματα στο διαμέρισμα παρά μόνον τα δικά του! Μόνο 203 ευρώ στην τράπεζα και ένα σπίτι υποθηκευμένο στις τράπεζες… και άνεργος από τον προηγούμενο μήνα… και με το κωλομνημόνιο μέχρι νεοτέρας… Θέλεις και άλλα στοιχεία;

-Μόνο τα δικά του αποτυπώματα; Αφού είχε γκόμενα ο τύπος ρε Βαγγέλη… πού την πήδαγε;

-Αυτό είναι το θέμα μας; Πού την πήδαγε ρε Νίκο; Σε γαμοτέλ… ξέρω’γω. Ο τύπος έκοψε τις φλέβες του και αυτοκτόνησε κι εσύ μου λες για την γκόμενα. Δε λέω έχεις ένα δίκιο… και εάν δεν την πήδαγε; αλλά αυτό δεν αφορά εμάς πλέον. Η υπόθεση έκλεισε. Αυτοκτονία! Άντε γιατί πείνασα. Σουβλάκι ή πίτσα;

Καθώς πλησίαζα είδα στην είσοδο της πολυκατοικίας πολύ κόσμο μαζεμένο. Προσπέρασα. Δύο άντρες γύρω στα σαράντα, βιαστικοί με βλέμματα ψυχρά κατέβαιναν τις σκάλες και το μόνο που πήρε τ’ αυτί μου ήταν ένα ‘χωρίς τζατζίκι ρε μαλάκα!’. Μου φάνηκαν γνώριμες φιγούρες. Έβγαλα τη φωτογραφική. Τράβηξα την είσοδο της πολυκατοικίας και τους δύο τύπους στην έξοδο. Προχώρησα. Άνοιξα την πόρτα του διαμερίσματος. Μπήκα στο μπάνιο. Τράβηξα το σεντόνι στην μπανιέρα. Αίματα, δύο χέρια κόκκινα, ξυραφάκι στο πάτωμα, γυμνός άντρας. Ανατρίχιασα, όχι πως ήμουν φοβητσιάρης, αλλά κάθε φορά που έβλεπα ένα νεκρό σώμα ένα ρίγος διέτρεχε το σώμα μου. Μύρισα λιβάνι, παραπάτησα. Έβγαλα το μπλοκάκι μου και σημείωσα την ώρα τέσσερις και τέταρτο μμ. Τράβηξα τη μηχανή και πάτησα 10 κλικ. Αυτοκτονία. Διάβασα το σημείωμα:

Χορεύω τη νύχτα και πεθαίνω την ημέρα… Δε μου απομένει τίποτα, εκτός της μουσικής. Και την να την κάνω τη μουσική τη μέρα; Συγνώμη.

Μίλησα με τον διαχειριστή:

- Ήσυχο παιδί ο Αντρέας. Ποτέ δεν τον ακούσαμε. Λες και δεν έμενε εδώ. Πάντοτε ευγενικός και μ’ ένα χαμόγελο. Τι να σου πω… πολύ στεναχωρηθήκαμε.

- Ερχόταν κάποιος άλλος στο διαμέρισμά του;

- Λένε ότι είχε μια φιλενάδα… εγώ δεν την είδα ποτέ πριν. Εάν δεν την έβλεπα σήμερα θα νόμιζα ότι ήταν πουσ… ε, μόνος ήθελα να πω.

- Καλά. Γονείς, συγγενείς;

- Μπα, δεν γνώρισα κανέναν άλλον… Μόνο τα κοινόχρηστα μου έφερνε και τίποτα περισσότερο. Θα με συγχωρέσεις πρέπει να πάω να φάω… βλέπεις παράτησα τη φακή στη μέση… μήπως θέλεις ένα πιάτο;

- Σ’ ευχαριστώ είμαι σαρκοφάγος. Άλλα πέντε κλικ και το ρεπορτάζ ήταν έτοιμο: ‘Αυτοκτόνησε άνεργος στον Κολωνό’ να βάλω ‘μετά μουσικής’ ή μήπως είναι ειρωνικό; Καθώς έβγαινα από τη πολυκατοικία άκουσα μια γυναικεία φωνή να ψιθυρίζει … ‘τον φάγανε σου λέω…’ Επιτάχυνα το βήμα μου προς την κατεύθυνση του ψιθύρου, σιγή.

- Μιλήσατε;

Μία νεαρή γυναίκα γύρω στα 25, φορώντας μία μαύρη ζακέτα και κρατώντας στα χέρια της ένα χοντρό βιβλίο, έχοντας πιάσει τα μαλλιά της κότσο αποκρίθηκε:

- Τον φάγανε σου λέω!

- Ποιοι τον φάγανε;

- Είχε πάρε δώσε με μπάτσους την προηγούμενη μέρα.

- Ο αυτόχειρας;

- Δεν με ακούς; Σου λέω τον φάγανε.

Παρόλο που οι σταγόνες της βροχής είχαν κάνει μούσκεμα το πρόσωπό της διέκρινα δύο μάτια κόκκινα και ίχνη δακρύων. Η φωνή της έβγαινε δύσκολα και κάποιες λέξεις τις έλεγε μουρμουρίζοντας.

- Το όνομά σου;

- Άστο… δεν έχει σημασία.

- Για ποιο λόγο τον φάγανε; Ρώτησα μ’ ένα δισταγμό.

- Δεν ξέρω… δε μου έλεγε…

- Τον γνώριζες;

- Είμαι… άστο καλύτερα.

- Το αφήνω.

- Το όνομά σου; Με ρώτησε.

- Θεόδωρος της είπα με μία σιγουριά. Για ποιο λόγο τον φάγανε;

- Είχε μπλέξει… ήταν μέλος… μήπως είσαι κι εσύ;

- Της ΕΣΗΕΑΣ;

- Ποιας; Όχι, της στοάς!

- Ποια στοά;

- Της Μεγάλης, στα Εξάρχεια.

- Δεν καταλαβαίνω…

- Τον πιέζανε να μη μιλήσει… και αυτός πήγε στους μπάτσους.

- Ποιοι τον πιέζανε;

- Της στοάς….

- Και τι ήθελε να πει;

- Για τη μουσική! Το έγραψε στο σημείωμα! Μήπως είσαι απ’ τους άλλους;

- Όχι είπαμε… ποια μουσική;

- Άσε δεν θα καταλάβεις… είναι για μυημένους μόνο. Γεια!

- Περίμενε! Πώς σε λένε;

- Δε με λένε!

- Στάσου… Περίμενε! Μπήκε στην διπλανή πολυκατοικία και την έχασα από τα μάτια μου.

Τρελή; Ή όντως τον ήξερε; Έχουν δει πολλά τα μάτια μου τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια που κάνω ρεπορτάζ. Καμιά φορά έχει και τα περίεργά της αυτή η δουλειά. Κοίταξα το ρολόι μου και η ώρα ήταν 7 και πήρε να βραδιάσει. Ώρα να πάω στο σπίτι. Με περιμένει δουλειά, έχω να στείλω το ρεπορτάζ μου μέχρι τις δύο το βράδυ και έχω να κάνω μπάνιο και να μαγειρέψω! Κοτόπουλο με δεντρολίβανο και… Μουσική; Στοά; Ήμουν απόλυτα σίγουρος ότι η νεαρή γυναίκα μου έλεγε ψέματα. Μπα… αυτοκτονία στα σίγουρα μονολόγησα.

Ευτυχώς η πρωινή καταιγίδα είχε γίνει ένα μικρό αεράκι που δρόσιζε το σούρουπο. Γύρισα στο σπίτι και πήρα να ανεβαίνω τις σκάλες. Έβαλα το κλειδί στο χέρι μου, πάτησα το κουδούνι και ξεκλείδωσα την πόρτα. Πάντα χτυπούσα το κουδούνι πριν μπω στο διαμέρισμά μου. Εάν είναι κανείς μέσα τουλάχιστον να μη ξαφνιαστούμε. Εμμονή; Προχώρησα μερικά βήματα και μου μύρισε λιβάνι… περίεργο, παραπάτησα και έκατσα στην πολυθρόνα. Έβγαλα το πακέτο με τον καπνό. Πήρα τα χαρτάκια ρίζλα και έβγαλα ένα. Έβαλα στη μία άκρη το καπνό και στην άλλη το φιλτράκι. Να εξέχουν και τα δύο. Με το δεξιό αντίχειρα και το δείχτη κρατούσα σταθερά το φιλτράκι. Με το άλλο χέρι έστριβα το χαρτί και πίεζα ώστε να στρώσει ο καπνός. Με μία ρυθμική κίνηση εξασκημένη για πάνω από εικοσιπέντε χρόνια ετοίμασα το βραδινό τσιγάρο. Ρουφηξιά και κυκλάκι. Άνοιξα την τηλεόραση να χαζέψω. Το τηλέφωνο άρχισε να χτυπάει. Γαμώ τα τηλέφωνα ξεφώνησα! Ποιος να είναι στις 8.00; δεν ξέρουν ότι βλέπω ειδήσεις; Σιωπή… Στο καπάκι χτυπά το κινητό μου. Το σηκώνω:

- Παρακαλώ!

- Τι παρακαλάς ρε μαλάκα; Τρέξε στον Κολωνό έχουμε αυτοκτονία.

- Εκεί ήμουν! Τίποτα νεότερο; Πότε πληρωνόμαστε;

- Θες και να πληρωθείς! Τρέξε στον Κολωνό στην οδό Ευκλείδου 22.

- 18! Εκεί ήμουν πριν μια ώρα!

- Ναι, στο νούμερο 18… τώρα σου λέω για το νούμερο 22! Έχουμε και δεύτερη αυτοκτονία.

- Κι άλλη; Γαμώ τα ξυραφάκια μου! Έφυγα!

Ο Θ. τριγύριζε στο δωμάτιο, ξυπόλητος μ’ ένα τσιγάρο στο χέρι. Ο Ανέστης ο ‘Λιβανέζος’ ήταν υπεύθυνος απ’ εδώ και πέρα φύλακας τιμωρός για την ζωή του. Η εντολή είχε δοθεί από τον Μεγάλο. ‘Όποιος μπει ανάμεσα ξεπάστρεψέ τον’. Δεν ήταν να παίζεις μαζί του. Είχε τους πάντες του χεριού του από πολιτικούς μέχρι δικαστές και αφεντάδες κάθε λογής. Ο Ανέστης κάποτε υπηρετούσε το κράτος αλλά τώρα είχε βγει στη σύνταξη και λόγω κάποιων οφειλών αναλάμβανε να βγάλει από τη μέση όποιον έμπαινε στο δρόμο του Μεγάλου. Δεν είχε δει ποτέ του το πρόσωπό του και ούτε ξεστόμισε ποτέ το πραγματικό του όνομα. Το μόνο που κυκλοφορούσε στην πιάτσα ήταν ότι κάποιος μεγαλοεργολάβος με πολλές πολιτικές διασυνδέσεις έχοντας ανέβει στον 32^ο βαθμό της Μασονίας πλήρωνε αρκετά καλά για να ξεπαστρέψει οποιονδήποτε έμπαινε εμπόδιο στα επιχειρηματικά του σχέδια. Ο Ανέστης δεν ήθελε να σκαλίσει περισσότερα και κρατούσε πάντα το στόμα του κλειστό. Του έφτανε τα 30,000 ευρώ που έπαιρνε για κάθε στόχο. Τα νέα στοιχεία με μία φωτογραφία είχαν έρθει στο blackberry του: 42, δημοσιογράφος, Ριζάρη 23, 2^ος όροφος, άγαμος. Κάθε στόχος ήθελε τη δική του προσεχτική μελέτη. Ο Ανέστης μάθαινε τα πάντα. Από τι καφέ πίνει μέχρι πόσες φορές πηδάει τη βδομάδα, το μήνα ή τη μέρα… Αυτή τη φορά φαινόταν ότι ήταν θέμα μερικών ημερών, το πολύ εβδομάδων μέχρι ο Θ. να φτάσει σε μια κάποια άκρη και να ακριβώς εκείνη τη στιγμή που θα αρχίσουν όλα να ξεδιαλύνουν στο μυαλό του θα πάει μια και καλή να συναντήσει τον Α. και την Α. ‘ Ένα μεναζ α τρουα στον άλλο κόσμο…’ μουρμούριζε και ρούφαγε με δύναμη το τσιγάρο του. Κατέγραψε τον αριθμό της μηχανής του, έριξε μια καλή ματιά στην είσοδο της πολυκατοικίας και κάθισε αναπαυτικά στο πίσω μέρος του βαν του που είχε όλα τα σύνεργα της παρακολούθησης. Το κινητό του Θ. χτύπησε, άνοιξε βιαστικά το βαλιτσάκι και έστησε αυτί:

- Εκεί ήμουν! Τίποτα νεότερο; Πότε πληρωνόμαστε;

- Θες και να πληρωθείς! Τρέξε στον Κολωνό στην οδό Ευκλείδου 22.

- 18! Εκεί ήμουν πριν μια ώρα!

- Ναι, στο νούμερο 18… τώρα σου λέω για το νούμερο 22! Έχουμε και δεύτερη αυτοκτονία.

- Κι άλλη; Γαμώ τα ξυραφάκια μου! Έφυγα!

Σημείωσε την ώρα 8.10 και κάθισε βιαστικά στη θέση του οδηγού. Είδε τον Θ. να βγαίνει φουριόζος να καβαλάει τη μηχανή του με κατεύθυνση εκεί που βρισκόταν ο Ανέστης πριν καμιά ώρα στην οδό Ευκλείδου 22.

- Εάν δεν είχε μιλήσει με την Α. ίσως και να ζούσε ακόμα η μαλακισμένη. Αυτή η ομιλία της και η προθυμία του να την ακούσει σφράγισε τη μοίρα τους που θα είναι κοινή πολύ σύντομα.
Συλλογίστηκε και έβαλε το χέρι του στο λεβιέ των ταχυτήτων, γύρισε το κλειδί και ξεκίνησε. Επέστρεψε σπίτι του, άνοιξε μία κονσέρβα και τάισε την γάτα του. Αγαπούσε πολύ τις γάτες και ιδίως τις κεραμιδόγατες. Ήταν άνθρωπος της πίστης και της τάξης, με ρούχα πάντα σιδερωμένα και ένα κρυστάλλινο βλέμμα λες και δεν είχε κανένα συναίσθημα. Εκπαιδευμένος να κρύβει κάθε συναίσθημα που θα πρόδιδε τη διάθεσή του, καλογυμνασμένος, με πολλές επιτυχίες στο ενεργητικό του κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας του στην Κ.Υ.Π. Στην τελευταία του αποστολή όμως έφαγε μία σφαίρα στο δεξί μηρό και από τότε δυσκολευόταν να περπατήσει τόσο γρήγορα όσο πρώτα. Αποστρατεύτηκε τέσσερα χρόνια μετά την πτώση της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης. Τελευταία του αποστολή ήταν στη Βουλγαρία για την εγκαθίδρυση φιλοδυτικής κυβέρνησης. Δεν κατάφερε να παντρευτεί και έφαγε μία περιουσία με μία Βουλγάρα στη Σόφια. Απένταρος και μόνος γύρισε στην Αθήνα και κατέληξε να πίνει και να πίνει ατελείωτες ρετσίνες σε κακόφημα στέκια στα Πατήσια και τον Κολωνό μέχρι που τον περιμάζεψε ένας δικός του. Την πρώτη του δουλειά την ανέλαβε το Μάιο του 1997. Η υπόθεση ήταν εύκολη. Μία παρακολούθηση για περίπου τρεις βδομάδες και μία παράδοση όπλων. Πήρε τα πρώτα του χρήματα, 300.000 δραχμές τότε, και τα ξόδεψε μέσα σε μία νύχτα σε στριπτιτζάδικο στην Συγγρού παρέα με μία Ρωσίδα. Είχε προτίμηση στις γυναίκες του πρώην ανατολικού μπλοκ παρόλο που μια ζωή πολεμούσε τον κομμουνισμό και την αθεΐα. ‘Στον έρωτα δεν χωράνε ιδεολογίες’ συνήθιζε να λέει και μισάνοιγε το στόμα του προσπαθώντας να γελάσει μα στο τέλος πάντα έβηχε. Η φωνή του ήταν βαριά και κοφτή. Τόνιζε το σίγμα προδίδοντας την κρητική καταγωγή του.

Έφτασα στην πολυκατοικία που μόλις καμιά ώρα πριν είχα αφήσει. Ο ίδιος κόσμος. Αυτή τη φορά υπήρχε και ένας παπάς.

- Να κάνει ευχέλαιο για να φύγει το κακό από τη γειτονιά. Δεύτερος θάνατος μέσα στην ίδια μέρα! Τι άλλο μας περιμένει;

- Τον γνωρίζατε τον αυτόχειρα; Ρώτησα μία γυναίκα γύρω στα εξήντα μ’ ένα καμένο ξανθό μαλλί και ένα πρόσωπο ζαρωμένο από τα χρόνια και τις στερήσεις.

- Τι να σου πω… Την είχα δει καμιά δυο φορές να κάνει παρέα και με τον άλλο στο 18. Γνωριζόντουσαν αλλά δεν νομίζω να ήτανε ζευγάρι…

- Α, ώστε αυτή τη φορά έχουμε γυναίκα. Το όνομα της;

- Αγγελική.

- Μάλιστα… ευχαριστώ. Πήρα να κατεβαίνω τα σκαλιά της πολυκατοικίας. Αυτή τη φορά το διαμέρισμα ήταν στο υπόγειο. Στην είσοδο στεκόντουσαν δυο τύποι και μιλούσαν πάλι για τζατζίκι.

- ‘Και σου είπα ρε μαλάκα χωρίς τζατζίκι…’ Αυτή τη φορά τους αναγνώρισα ήταν ο Νίκος και ο Βαγγέλης του τμήματος ανθρωποκτονιών. Είχαμε ξανασυναντηθεί σε άλλη υπόθεση κάποιο μήνα του καλοκαιριού.

- Έχουμε πόρισμα Νίκο;

- Τι πόρισμα ρε φίλε; Δε βλέπεις; Εδώ έχουμε καραμπινάτη αυτοκτονία! Μπες και θα δεις…

Άνοιξα την πόρτα του διαμερίσματος και προχώρησα στο εσωτερικό του. Οι τοίχοι του σπιτιού ήταν λευκοί χωρίς κανένα κάδρο κρεμασμένο. Το φως τρεμόπαιζε στις λάμπες. Υπήρχε μυρωδιά από μπαρούτι και λιβάνι. Παραπάτησα και πρόσεξα στο παράθυρο της πόρτας του μπάνιου να υπάρχει αίμα. Άνοιξα την πόρτα και βρήκα την Αγγελική μέσα στη μπανιέρα. Το πρόσωπο της είχε μία τεράστια τρύπα και τα μυαλά της κολυμπούσαν στην μπανιέρα. Η καραμπίνα ήταν στραμμένη στο πρόσωπο της και πεσμένη πάνω στο σώμα της. Ήταν γυμνή. Έβγαλα τη φωτογραφική μου μηχανή και τράβηξα εφτά φωτογραφίες. Ένιωσα ένα ρίγος να διατρέχει τη σπονδυλική μου στήλη.

- Βρήκαμε κι εδώ σημείωμα. Άκου! Μου είπε ο Βαγγέλης παίρνοντας μια βαθειά ανάσα:

‘Αγάπη, δεν αντέχω τη μοναξιά που μου έβαλες να φορέσω. Με πνίγει. Θα σε ακολουθήσω. Συγχώρεσε με. Άλφα.’

Έχουμε μαρτυρία ότι την είδαν να μιλά σε έναν φωτογράφο πριν καμιά ώρα και να του λέει ότι δεν άντεχε άλλο και τέτοια. Η καραμπίνα φαίνεται κυνηγητική και ανήκει στον αυτόχειρα της διπλανής πολυκατοικίας. Δεν ξέρουμε πως κατάφερε να την πάρει αλλά φαντάζομαι ότι γνωρίζονταν. Το μόνο περίεργο είναι ότι βρήκαμε μία απόδειξη ζαχαροπλαστείου και ένα δεύτερο σημείωμα που δείχνει ότι μάλλον κάτι σχεδίαζε από μέρες πριν.

Δεν έχω άλλα cd ν’ ακούσω. Σου τα έχω δώσει όλα. Πριν φύγουμε θέλω να χορέψουμε για μία τελευταία φορά μαζί. Θα σου κρατώ το χέρι κι εσύ θα χαϊδεύεις τους ώμους μου. Θύμησέ μου να δυναμώσουμε την ένταση της μουσικής τόσο ώστε να κρύψουμε το φόβο μας στις νότες. Εάν δεν χορέψουμε μαζί να ξέρεις ότι σ’ αγαπώ και μη με ψάξεις.

Ethics of War: The War on Justice and Utility

Introduction
War is an intentional armed conflict which occurs only between political communities. The essence of war is about governance and who gets power and resources, thus who has the final say to what goes on in a given territory. As Carl Clausewitz’s puts it war is “an act of violence intended to compel our opponent to fulfil our will”. It is about governance itself.
At the turn of the twenty first century the War on Terror proclaimed by President Bush has produced a series of moral debates in the Western world. The War on Terror raised the following fundamental questions: Can there ever be a just war? Is it permissible to cause harm and death on the ground that it is the side effect of bringing about the best result? Do humanitarian interventions help the people in need? What intentions can there be behind a war?
Political leaders justify wars by appealing to moral frameworks, of which the most influential ones are the “just war” theory and utilitarianism. Michael Walzer’s masterwork Just and Unjust Wars offers some plausible answers to these questions. The “just war” tradition – a set of mutually agreed rules of combat – evolves common values shared between two enemies. Though, in the case where enemies differ greatly in moral beliefs, war conventions are rarely applied. The motivation for two parts to agree to certain conventions can be often mutually benefiting. Historically, “just war” theorists agree that rules of war should be applied to all equally. The aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the USA on 9/11 has brought great attention to the “just war” debate. Despite the international war conventions in place, war crimes continue regardless of the righteousness of the cause.

The utilitarian framework claims that to go to war is acceptable, if and only if, it will lead to an overall improvement in the current state of affairs. For utilitarians the right action is the one that produces more good than any available alternatives, though if more good will be gained from breaking the rules than will be lost, then the utilitarians will support the necessity of a military conflict. Finally, the Doctrine of Double Effect seems a convenient tool for both war supporters and pacifists in their argument for and against war, as the doctrine is used to explain the permissibility of an action that causes a serious harm.

Who created man?

The question how the world was created is the oldest in human history, and if someone wants to give some answer he will not be able to avoid the teachings of the ancient myths. In pro-scientific stage of human history the myth is the only evidence of human intellectual functioning.

Myths are the refuge of human knowledge and function as an instrument of the primitive man to force his knowledge and understanding of the world. The Cosmogony and Theogony are both early evidence of how the world was created. The oldest surviving intact Greek Theogony is that of Hesiod. He explains that first was Chaos, then Earth was created and used as a retreat of the immortal Gods living on top of Mount Olympus. From Chaos were born Erevos and black Night and from the Night the Ether and Day. (116-125) Here we see that all celestial bodies and phenomena are described as private entities descendants of Heaven and Earth. In contrast to the biblical God who is the creator of the world, in the Greek myth God or better Gods are rulers of the world but not the creators. Moreover, Jupiter the offspring of Gods is younger and therefore stronger and wiser. The legend states that the conflict between old and young Gods serves the primary idea of the origin of the world from less perfect forces to finest ones. The proof of this idea is the two battles of Titans and Giants. With Tartarus the mythical cosmography is completed. The Tartarus symbolizes the foundation of the world and hence the origin of which, as we mentioned above, comes from Chaos.

To sum up, the origin of the world in the pro-scientific man comes from Chaos and Zeus, the most perfect and
the wisest of all Gods comes from less perfect Gods, much weaker and less wise.

However, what does Hesiod says about the origin of humans? In his work Erga kai Imere (Works and Days, Solmsen: 53-101), we read the following:

And Nefeligeretis Zeus said with gall:

Son of Iapetus, who knows all the tricks, I am glad you've stolen the fire, laughing at me, a great lesson for you and for things to come. I'll give them unhappiness for the stolen fire.

In Plato's dialogue Protagoras we are told the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus. Since Epimetheus forgot and gave all the powers to the non-logic animals, humans left naked and unarmed. Hence Prometheus decides to steal the fire from Hephaestus and wisdom from Athena and gives both to humans. The legend states clearly that people have some divine origin as opposed to the non-logic animals that do not have anything divine. Certainly man is incomplete having lost permanently immortality or happiness.

Apollodorus describes the origin of man in his myth of Deucalion:
Zeus decided to wipe out people with flood. Prometheus advised his son Deucalion to build an ark to save himself. Having built the ark, locked into it with his wife Pyrrha. Zeus threw a lot of rain so goods and souls were lured. When the rain stopped Deucalion and Pyrrha made a sacrifice to Zeus to thank him for their salvation. God Zeus accepted their sacrifice and told them to ask for anything they wanted. They asked God for more people. This created a new tribe.
Here, the myth shows God as the creator of humans. And so the perfect God creates a being less perfect, the man. Here, as in the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus, the origin of man is reversed in comparison with that of God, namely the wisest of all Jupiter. The perfect being, Jupiter, has a humble origin from less wise and frailer parents, whereas the imperfect being man is descent from the omniscient Zeus. Why God Zeus is a creature of inferior beings and man of superior beings?

If God is whole and perfect, we would expect his creation to be whole and perfect, something not true. The idea is based on the perception that from something perfect and fine perfection is produced and nothing less. But if this is true then we, the people are the living examples of the non-perfection. Hence the whole idea would be wrong because the Creator made the imperfect human being. To save the Idea we could argue that the man originates not from a higher being, like Jupiter, but from an inferior being. Therefore the idea that from the perfect and finest comes out only the perfect and finest can be rescued.

This ordered universe, the same for all, no god nor man has made, but it ever was and is and will be: fire ever living, being kindled in measures and in measures going out.

All human creations have a use specified by the primary human need that created them. For example, the cause for the construction of a pen and its primary use was the human need to communicate. The pen will not have existed without man. Since its construction, it ‘lives’ to serve the fundamental need for human contact. So the pen is the mean to communicate. Apart from the primary use it can also be used in various ways: as a weapon for an attack or self defence, as a sexual object, as the object of mania, jealousy etc. So what is the primary reason to be a pen? The reason is to
write, that is a utilitarian object through which we communicate. You may write with it exquisite poetry, and scribbles. Changing the primary use we change its meaning. Thus the human need for communication has created the idea of a pen.

Let us now return to God and his creation of man. If man is God's creation, then the agent serves a need of God. And if man serves a need of the Creator, the Creator is not perfect as he needs human beings to serve him and the notion of a non self-sufficient God would be a mistake. God is perfect without any needs and wants. I would further argue that God is in a situation of calmness, in a constant state of nothingness. This does not mean that God does not exist.

Returning to the question whether we can get from a perfect being a less perfect one, man seems to temporarily solve the question. We can imagine a perfect machine fitted with the latest technology to produce a faulty pen due to some short of malfunctioning. So we could say that a perfect factory produces a defective product. So God created a defective product, humans. Thus God is the creator of a non perfect being. This assumption contradicts in terms with the idea of God. So the idea that God created man shall be refuted. Then, if not God who created us?

All Gods are dead: now we want the Overman to live. Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

I want to go back to the idea of a weaker, less perfect being that can create something stronger and more perfect. We can take the example of the pen in order to acknowledge that a single pen can record a story more accurately than a thousand human mouths; a nuclear bomb is more powerful than a thousand people. Thus we see a weak man creating something more powerful than him, a pen or a bomb. Hence, a weaker creature creates something stronger and better. As in the case of God Jupiter being an ascendant of less perfect Gods. The weak produces anything to overcome his weakness. Thus, the man has better chances to create something that is more perfect than him and this is God. As we move from the geocentric view of the world to the heliocentric, we should also move away from the notion that God created us. We are not an Idea of God. Then, whose Idea are we?

We are the Idea of a weak and less wise creature than humans. If God has no need for man then who would need us? One possible answer, although not the only one, is the monkey. Let us recall the origin of Jupiter and not forget that he comes from inferior parents.

The need for more reasoning and logos led the monkeys to create the human beings. And in return the man is able to create something more perfect than himself that some people may call it God, but I will borrow a phrase of Nietzsche and would say Overman. It seems that man is able to create the idea of an Overman like 'Jupiter' and not Jupiter or God the idea of a man. Here we follow the logic that says a weak creature has a greater need for a stronger, more perfect being than the vice versa. Like a baby that needs the stronger parents and in time the stronger parents will become weak and will need their stronger kid.

Hence, the monkey created the Idea of human beings and predetermined the primary need for logos, reason. If we lose our reasoning we will lose our primary use. In other words we will be a pen without ink. Finally, we in return create our Idea of a perfect human, the highest being, the Idea of a perfect God, stronger, wiser and perfect from all beings. God is in no position to create a higher Idea than himself as there is nothing higher than God itself. What is God or Overman? God is an imaginary creation of man and of society. This magma of ideas created the widely wrong view that man is created by God.

In Conclusion, I doubt the divine nature of man and propose a more rational solution to the origin of humans from the monkeys. The imaginary of the ape created man, which in turn the human imagination has created the Overman or God. Therefore, we should light a candle to Saint-Monkey.

Massive Leviathan, Tamar Natural Gas Fields Poised to Transform Israel Into Energy Exporter

The Leviathan natural-gas site off the Haifa shore could be twice the size of the Tamar prospect, the largest gas discovery globally in 2009, and position Israel as a gas exporter in coming years, US oil operator Noble Energy Inc. said Thursday.

“Today is a day of celebration for all of us. The State of Israel is  an energy independent country,” Yitzhak Tshuva, controlling shareholder  of Delek Group, said Thursday. Delek is a partner in the Leviathan  natural-gas find through its subsidiaries Avner Oil and Gas LP and Delek  Drilling LP, who each own 22.67 percent. [...]

“In March, when I was last in Israel, I said that Noble Energy  planned to be here for decades to come,” Noble Energy chairman and CEO  Charles Davidson said Thursday. “I am thrilled that today’s announcement  substantiates the potential of a new and significant energy basin in the eastern Mediterranean, which, if successful, could position Israel as a potential energy exporter in future years.

“I would like to congratulate the State of Israel on the discoveries  of the last year and a half, which have the potential to strengthen the  economy and security of Israel. Noble is honored to be working with our  Israeli partners in this historic development.” [...] 

Israel will threaten Turkey if it starts exporting large quantities of LNG. The Turkish LNG pipeline plans from Russia will potentially remove them from a profitable picture if Israel begins large sea based exports of LNG to Europe and Asia in the coming decades.

The largest section discovered so far, the Leviathan gas field, is believed to possibly contain, alongside natural gas, 4.2 billion barrels of oil. Leviathan straddles the Israeli-Lebanese maritime border. Israel is currently in a state of war with Lebanon and does not recognize the de-facto Hamas Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip.

Sharp words are already being exchanged between Jerusalem and Beirut. Upon discovery of the fields in June, Lebanon warned Israel not to drill within their maritime borders. Israel then escalated the rhetoric with military threats, as Minister of National Infrastructures Uzi Landau threatened to use force to

protect the natural gas fields. Following Landau’s announcement, sophisticated security arrangements for Israeli natural gas rigs were leaked to the country’s press. As of press time, further surveying is underway.

It is not unimaginable that, in the next regional war, Israeli and Lebanese military elements could target the other’s natural gas drills. This has the potential to cause a regional ecological catastrophe.

However, progress is being made. Israel is demarcating their maritime borders with Cyprus. According to Batsheva Sobelman of the Los Angeles Times Israeli diplomats say the agreement should secure Israel’s economic interests in the Mediterranean. Cyprus says this doesn’t conflict with a similar agreement signed with Lebanon, still awaiting ratification in parliament.

Cyprus is ending up as the natural mediator in this dispute. While sections of the Levant Basin Province stray into the county’s maritime borders, their shares are comparatively small. More importantly, Cyprus enjoys warm relations with both Israel and Lebanon. When large-scale harvesting of these natural gas fields begins, Cyprus may be able to work with other third parties to broker an agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, as so often happens in the Middle East, other countries are trying to extract as much influence as possible from the natural gas hullaballoo. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has stated that they are “closely following” the Cyprus-Israel agreement, as reported by al-Masry al-Youm

The ministry is carrying out technical and legal research to ensure that borders under the agreement between Israel and Cyprus do not affect the Egyptian zone, [government spokesperson Hassam] Zaki said.

Egypt is in contact with Cyprus on the issue given the previous agreement between the two countries, he added.

Meanwhile, Turkey went on the diplomatic offensive against the Cyprus-Israel agreement. A Foreign Ministry statement called the maritime border accord “null and void” because it ignored the jurisdiction of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was formed following a military invasion of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974 following massive intercommunal violence. The only country to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is Turkey, and 35,000 Turkish troops are currently stationed in Northern Cyprus.

Turkey has stated that it “does not have any claim regarding the maritime areas” subject to the demarcation agreement. Cyprus announced plans to have Noble Energy explore the 800,000 acres of Cypriot waters within the Levant Basin a year prior to the demarcation agreement.

While it could be a military catastrophe, steps are being taken to divide the spoils. The imminent visit of Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev in Cyprus is to plan the new energy map and new geopolitics strategy, which are about to be created. For the first time in its 50-year history, the Republic of Cyprus has become a strong magnet of international attention for reasons not related to the Cyprus problem. The visits to Nicosia of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev in October and of German Chancellor Angela Merkel were by all accounts inspired by the mounting evidence that the tiny island republic will soon be one of the biggest natural gas exporters in Europe.

Egypt, one of the only two Arab states to sign peace with Israel, is wobbling dangerously on the brink of revolutionary change with potentially spreading fallout. This week, Israel was dismayed to find itself looking suddenly at three latently hostile fronts about to spring up around its borders: Lebanon, which has dropped into the Iranian orbit, followed by Egypt, which is heading for terra incognita, and the Gaza Strip, where the Palestinian Hamas, offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, has gained altitude as a Middle East player from the rise of its less radical parent.
The London Daily Telegraph headlined a story Saturday, apparently confirming confidential US documents released by WikiLeaks, which claimed that since 2008, the American government had secretly backed leading figures behind the uprising for "regime change."
The US embassy in Cairo reportedly helped a young Egyptian dissident secretly attend a US-Sponsored summit for activists in New York. "On his return to Cairo in December 2008, the activist told US diplomats that an alliance of opposition groups had drawn up a plan to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak and Install a democratic government in 2011," the Telegraph reported.
Persistent claims were heard Saturday, Jan. 29 in various Egyptian and informed western circles that the popular uprising against president Hosni Mubarak, still going strong on its fifth day, was secretly prepared three years ago in Washington during the Bush administration.

2011: The dark year ahead

When Pravda, the Russian newspaper, publishes such articles (2011: The dark year ahead, 06.01.2011) as above, one has to ask what is the main purpose. One answer could be for domestic consumption and for feeding the nationalistic sentiments of the Russian citizens and the dream of Great Russia. Another answer could be the forming of a geopolitical agenda, even if what is said can be described as rather imaginative and very good for a fiction book, rather than an article published in a very well known newspaper. Israel is going to have a hot war on their hands, this year. First, with Brazil and Argentina both declaring recognition of the Palestinian terrorist state, this will put pressure to fight a real war. The war itself will initiate from Hamas, the radicals who just do not give much of a damn about how many Lebanese die for their Jihad. As Israel strikes back against the missile barrages and cross border attacks, it will also face increased pressure against it from the Palestinians. The Americans will give lukewarm support at best.

The key player who will escalate this will be the Turks, with Erdagon dead set on a military confrontation. He will get it, first at sea and the air and then with Turkish soldiers coming into Lebanon. The war will quickly escalate, with Turkey's own unstable internal and external politics playing a direct roll.

Israel will take severe damage on its border areas, however, there will also be mass casualties in southern Lebanon and the Palestinian areas. Gaza will catch the worst of it and may see direct indiscriminate artillery barrages by the IDF. Surrounding Arab nations will be rocked by fanatic protests, when their governments do not get involved, which will also bring down extreme crack downs and blood baths on the radicals from various kings and dictators bent on staying in power and not bringing themselves into the meat grinder.

Russia, due to the Turkish involvement and that of the Greeks and Kurds, will come out as the main Israeli ally, coming firstly out against the Turks and then being drawn in against the rest of the Islamics. Yes, Russia will loose a lot of influence with the Islamic Arabs but will gain immensely with the Orthodox Christians and other Christian groups, as well as the Jews.

The minority rulers of Syria, will also start to back off Hamas, not wishing to be drawn in and will be busy exterminating the radicals at home who will try to over throw Basher.

Lebanon

Lebanon is set to burn. Hamas, first backed by Iran and Syria and Turkey, will initiate a large scale war with Israel and will attempt, backed by the Turks, to come directly into power. Of course the aim will be to drive out the Christians and the nominal Muslims, which in itself will spark a low scale war. When the Turks arrive to "aid" Hamas against Israel, this will be seen as an attempt at the recreation of the despised Ottoman Empire. The Christian/liberal Muslim elements will go into a full partisan warfare mode, backed by Syria, which, while suppressing its own fanatics, will be doing everything it can to make sure its former oppressors do not put down deep roots.

Ποιος Δημιούργησε τον Άνθρωπο;

Το ερώτημα πώς έγινε ο κόσμος είναι από τα πιο παλαιά στην ιστορία του ανθρώπου και εάν θέλει κάποιος να δώσει μία κάποια απάντηση δεν θα μπορούσε να αποφύγει τις διδασκαλίες των αρχαίων μύθων. Στο προεπιστημονικό στάδιο της ιστορίας του ανθρώπου ο μύθος αποτελεί το μοναδικό τεκμήριο της ανθρώπινης πνευματικής λειτουργίας. Οι μύθοι αποτελούν το καταφύγιο της ανθρώπινης γνώσης και λειτουργούν ως ένα εργαλείο του πρωτόγονου ανθρώπου για να επιβάλλει τις γνώσεις του. Η κοσμογονία και η θεογονία αποτελούν και οι δύο μαζί τα πρώτα τεκμήρια για τη προσπάθεια εξήγησης του κόσμου και πώς αυτός είναι. Η παλαιότερη σωζόμενη ακέραια ελληνική θεογονία είναι αυτή του Ησιόδου. Εξηγεί ότι πρώτα έγινε το Χάος και αμέσως η Γη καταφύγιο των αθάνατων που ζουν στις κορυφές του Ολύμπου. Από το Χάος γεννήθηκαν το Έρεβος και η μαύρη Νύχτα και από τη Νύχτα ο Αιθέρας και η Ημέρα. (116-125) Εδώ βλέπουμε ότι όλα τα ουράνια σώματα και φαινόμενα περιγράφονται σαν να είναι προσωπικές οντότητες απόγονοι του Ουρανού και της Γης. Σε αντίθεση με το βιβλικό Θεό που είναι δημιουργός του κόσμου, εδώ ο Θεός ή καλύτερα οι Θεοί είναι μεν κυβερνήτες του κόσμου αλλά όχι και δημιουργοί του. Επιπλέον ο Δίας είναι απόγονος άλλων Θεών και ως νεότερος είναι και πιο δυνατός αλλά και πιο σοφός. Ο μύθος δηλώνει ότι η σύγκρουση ανάμεσα σε παλαιότερους και νεότερους Θεούς υπηρετεί την πρωτογονική ιδέα της καταγωγής του κόσμου από λιγότερο τέλειες δυνάμεις που γεννούν τελειότερες. Απόδειξη αυτής της ιδέας είναι και οι δύο μάχες των Τιτάνων και των Γιγάντων.

Με τα Τάρταρα ολοκληρώνεται η μυθική Κοσμογραφία. Τα Τάρταρα συμβολίζουν τα θεμέλια του κόσμου και άρα την καταγωγή του που όπως είπαμε και παραπάνω προέρχεται από το Χάος.

Συνοψίζοντας η καταγωγή του κόσμου κατά τον προεπιστημονικό άνθρωπο προέρχεται από το Χάος και ο Δίας ο τελειότερος και ο πιο σοφός όλων των Θεών προέρχεται από λιγότερο τέλειους Θεούς. Έτσι η καταγωγή του σοφότερου Θεού Δία δεν είναι και τόσο τέλεια, προέρχεται μάλλον από κατώτερούς του τόσο σε δύναμη όσο και σε σοφία.

Τι λέει όμως ο Ησίοδος για την καταγωγή των ανθρώπων; Στο Έργα και Ημέραι 53-101 Solmsen, διαβάζουμε τα εξής:

Και ο νεφεληγερέτης Δίας του’ πε με χολή:

‘Γιε του Ιαπετού, που ξέρεις όλα τα τεχνάσματα,

Χαίρεσαι που μου ‘χεις κλέψει τη φωτιά, γελώντας με, πάθημα για σένα μέγα και για τους μελλούμενους. Γιατί εγώ σ’ αυτούς θα δώσω συφορά για τη φωτιά, και μ’ αυτή θα φχαριστιούνται, συφορά αγκαλιάζοντας’.

Στον πλατωνικό διάλογο Πρωταγόρας έχουμε την αφήγηση του γνωστού μύθου του Προμηθέα και του Επιμηθέα. Αφού λοιπόν ο Επιμηθέας ξεχάστηκε και έδωσε όλες τις δυνάμεις στα άλογα ζώα, τον άνθρωπο τον άφησε γυμνό και άοπλο. Έτσι ο Προμηθέας σκεπτόμενος ποια δύναμη να βρει για τον άνθρωπο αποφασίζει να κλέψει από τον Ήφαιστο τη φωτιά και από την Αθηνά τη σοφία και να τις δώσει και τις δύο στον άνθρωπο. Ο μύθος δηλώνει ξεκάθαρα ότι οι άνθρωποι έχουν μια κάποια Θεϊκή καταγωγή σε αντίθεση με τα άλογα ζώα που δεν έχουν τίποτα το θεϊκό. Βέβαια ο άνθρωπος παραμένει ατελής έχοντας χάσει οριστικά την αθανασία ή την ευτυχία του.

Στον ανθρωπογονικό μύθο του Δευκαλίωνα ο Απολλόδωρος περιγράφει την καταγωγή του ανθρώπου:

Ο Δίας αποφασίζει να εξαφανίσει τους ανθρώπους με κατακλυσμό. Ο Προμηθέας συμβουλεύει τον γιό του Δευκαλίωνα να κατασκευάσει μία κιβωτό για να σωθεί. Αφού κατασκεύασε την κιβωτό κλείστηκε μέσα σε αυτήν με τη γυναίκα του Πύρρα. Ο Δίας έριξε πολλή βροχή με αποτέλεσμα να παρασυρθούν αγαθά και ψυχές. Όταν σταμάτησε η βροχή ο Δευκαλίων και η Πύρρα κάνουν θυσία στο Δία για να τον ευχαριστήσουν για τη σωτηρία τους. Ο Θεός δέχτηκε τη θυσία και τους είπε να του ζητήσουν όποια χάρη θέλουν. Εκείνοι ζήτησαν από το Θεό ανθρώπους. Έτσι έγινε ένας νέος λαός.

Κι εδώ ο μύθος δείχνει το Θεό ως δημιουργό των ανθρώπων. Κι έτσι ο τέλειος Θεός δημιουργεί ένα λιγότερο τέλειο ον, τον άνθρωπο. Εδώ, όπως και στο μύθο του Προμηθέα και του Επιμηθέα, έχουμε την αντιστροφή της καταγωγής του ανθρώπου σε σύγκριση με αυτή των Θεών και συγκεκριμένα του σοφότερου όλων Δία. Το τέλειο όν, ο Δίας, έχει μία ταπεινή καταγωγή από λιγότερο σοφούς και πιο αδύναμους γονείς και το ατελές ον, ο άνθρωπος, έχει τελειότερη καταγωγή, από τον πάνσοφο Δία. Γιατί άραγε ένας Θεός να είναι δημιούργημα κατώτερων όντων και ένας άνθρωπος να είναι δημιούργημα ανώτερων όντων;

Εάν ο Θεός είναι ολόκληρος και τέλειος θα περίμενε κανείς και το δημιούργημά του να είναι ολόκληρο και τέλειο κάτι που δε συμβαίνει. Η ιδέα στηρίζεται στην εξής θέση ότι από το τέλειο παράγεται το τέλειο και τίποτα λιγότερο. Εάν όμως αυτό ισχύει τότε εμείς, οι άνθρωποι, είμαστε ζωντανό παράδειγμα του μη τέλειου. Άρα και η ιδέα ότι από το τέλειο παράγεται μόνο το τέλειο είναι λανθασμένη, διότι ο Δημιουργός έφτιαξε τον ημιτελή άνθρωπο. Ή μήπως δεν είναι έτσι; Θα μπορούσε ο άνθρωπος αντί να έχει καταγωγή απ’ ένα ανώτερο ον, να έχει όπως και ο Δίας, καταγωγή από ένα κατώτερο όν; Έτσι και η ιδέα ότι από το τέλειο προέρχεται το τέλειο θα διασωθεί.

Στυλό

Ο Θεός είναι μέρα νύχτα, χειμώνας θέρος, πόλεμος ειρήνη, κόρος λιμός, αλλοιώνεται όπως η φωτιά, που όταν σμίξει με θυμιάματα, ονομάζεται κατά τη μυρωδιά του καθενός. (77)

Αν τα πάντα γίνονταν καπνός, θα τα’ αναγνώριζαν τα ρουθούνια μας. (78)

Της ψυχής τα πέρατα δεν θα τα βρεις. (67)

Τον κόσμο τούτο, τον ίδιο για όλους, ούτε Θεός ουτ’ άνθρωπος τον έκανε, μα ήταν πάντα και είναι και θα’ ναι πυρ αείζωο, που ανάβει με μέτρο και σβήνει με μέτρο. (51)

Όλα τα ανθρώπινα δημιουργήματα έχουν μία χρήση που καθορίζεται από την πρωταρχική ανθρώπινη ανάγκη που τα δημιούργησε. Λόγου χάρη, η σύλληψη της ιδέας ενός στυλό και η κατασκευή του έγινε χάριν της ανάγκης του ανθρώπου να επικοινωνήσει. Το στυλό λοιπόν δεν θα υπήρχε χωρίς τον άνθρωπο. Από τη στιγμή της κατασκευής-δημιουργίας του ‘ζει’ για να εξυπηρετήσει την πρωταρχική ανάγκη του ανθρώπου για επικοινωνία. Άρα το στυλό είναι το μέσω για επικοινωνία. Πέραν όμως της πρωταρχικής χρήσης μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί ποικιλοτρόπως: ως όπλο για επίθεση ή αυτοάμυνα, ως σεξουαλικό αντικείμενο, ως αντικείμενο μανίας, ζήλειας κλπ. Επομένως ποιος είναι ο πρωταρχικός λόγος ενός στυλό; Ο λόγος είναι να γράφει, δηλαδή είναι ένα χρηστικό αντικείμενο μέσω του οποίου επιτυγχάνεται κατά κύριο λόγω η ανθρώπινη επικοινωνία. Μπορεί να γράψει εξαίσια ποιήματα, αλλά και μουντζούρες. Εάν χάσει τον πρωτεύοντα λόγω ύπαρξής του τότε αλλάζει και το νόημά του. Άρα η ανάγκη του ανθρώπου για επικοινωνία δημιούργησε την ιδέα της κατασκευής ενός στυλό.

Ας επανέλθουμε τώρα στο Θεό και το δημιούργημά του τον άνθρωπο. Εάν όντως ο άνθρωπος είναι δημιούργημα του Θεού, τότε ο άνθρωπος εξυπηρετεί κάποια ανάγκη του Θεού. Και εάν εξυπηρετεί ο άνθρωπος κάποια ανάγκη του Δημιουργού αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο Δημιουργός δεν είναι και τόσο τέλειος καθότι έχει και αυτός ανάγκες που μόνος του δεν μπορεί να επιτελέσει και κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν σφάλμα. Ο Θεός είναι τέλειος και ολόκληρος χωρίς ανάγκες. Θα λέγαμε ότι ο Θεός βρίσκεται σε μία κατάσταση αταραξίας, σε μία κατάσταση διαρκείς ανυπαρξίας. Αυτό δε σημαίνει ότι ο Θεός δεν υπάρχει.

Επανερχόμενοι στο ερώτημα εάν μπορούμε να πάρουμε από ένα τέλειο ον κάτι λιγότερο τέλειο, ο άνθρωπος φαίνεται να λύνει προσωρινά αυτήν την απορία. Μπορούμε να φανταστούμε ένα τέλειο εξοπλισμένο εργοστάσιο που βγάζει σωρηδόν τέλεια στυλό να κολλάει λόγω μιας δυσλειτουργίας και να βγάζει ένα στυλό made in China, δηλαδή ελαττωματικό. Έτσι θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε ότι ένα τέλειο εργοστάσιο έβγαλε ένα ελαττωματικό προϊόν. Έτσι και ο Θεός δημιούργησε ένα ελαττωματικό προϊόν τον άνθρωπο. Αυτό όμως θα σήμαινε ότι ο Θεός λόγω μιας κάποιας ανάγκης του ή ακόμα χειρότερα λόγω κάποιου λάθους δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο και αυτή η υπόθεση θα ήταν εντελώς εσφαλμένη. Έτσι η ιδέα ότι ο Θεός δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο αρχίζει να απομακρύνεται. Τότε εάν δε μας δημιούργησε ο Θεός ποιος μας δημιούργησε;

Ο Άγιος Πίθηκος

Θέλω να επανέλθω στην ιδέα ότι ένα αδύναμο, λιγότερο τέλειο ον, μπορεί να δημιουργήσει κάτι τελειότερο από αυτό. Εάν πάρουμε ως παράδειγμα το στυλό θα δούμε ότι ένα και μόνο στυλό μπορεί να καταγράψει μια ιστορία ακριβέστερα και από χίλια ανθρώπινα στόματα. Το ίδιο και μία πυρηνική βόμβα είναι πιο ισχυρή και από χίλιους ανθρώπους. Επομένως βλέπουμε έναν αδύναμο άνθρωπο να δημιουργεί κάτι τελειότερο από αυτόν, ένα στυλό, μία βόμβα. Δηλαδή ο αδύναμος δημιουργεί κάτι που θα τον κάνει δυνατότερο, τελειότερο. Έτσι και οι λιγότεροι τέλειοι Θεοί γεννούν τον τελειότερο όλων τον Δία. Ο αδύναμος δημιουργεί κάτι για να υπερκεράσει την αδυναμία του. Έτσι ο Πλάτωνας δημιουργεί το Σωκράτη, ο άνθρωπος δημιουργεί το Θεό και ο πίθηκος τον άνθρωπο. Από την γεωκεντρική θεώρηση περνάμε στην ηλιοκεντρική και από την δημιουργία του ανθρώπου κατ’ εικόνα και καθ’ ομοίωση του Θεού περνάμε στη δημιουργία του ανθρώπου κατ’ εικόνα και καθ’ ομοίωση του πιθήκου.

Εάν ο Θεός δεν έχει καμία ανάγκη τον άνθρωπο τότε ποιος θα μπορούσε να τον έχει ανάγκη; Μία πιθανή απάντηση, αν και δεν είναι η μόνη σωστή, είναι ο πίθηκος. Ας θυμηθούμε την καταγωγή του Δία. Ο πίθηκος λοιπόν και η ανάγκη του για Λόγο τον έκανε να δημιουργήσει τον άνθρωπο. Και ο άνθρωπος με τη σειρά του είναι σε θέση να δημιουργήσει κάτι τελειότερο από αυτόν που μπορεί κάποιοι να ονομάζουν Θεό, εγώ όμως θα δανειστώ μια φράση του Νίτσε και θα τον πω υπεράνθρωπο. Φαίνεται δηλαδή ότι ο άνθρωπος είναι σε θέση να δημιουργήσει έναν υπεράνθρωπο, έναν ‘Δία’ και όχι ένας Δίας, Θεός τον άνθρωπο. Εδώ ακολουθούμε τη λογική που λέει ότι ένα αδύναμο ον έχει μεγαλύτερη ανάγκη ένα δυνατότερο, τελειότερο παρά το αντίθετο. Όπως και ένα μωρό έχει ανάγκη τους δυνατούς γονείς του, έτσι και οι ίδιοι γονείς όταν γεράσουν έχουν ανάγκη το μωρό τους που τότε πλέον θα είναι πιο δυνατό και από τους δύο.

Έτσι ο πίθηκος δημιούργησε την ιδέα του ανθρώπου και καθόρησε τις πρωταρχικές ανάγκες μας, ίσως τη μία και μοναδική που λείπει στον πίθηκο, αυτή του Λόγου. Εάν χάσουμε το Λόγο θα χάσουμε και τη πρωταρχική μας χρήση. Θα είμαστε να το πω διαφορετικά ένα στυλό χωρίς μελάνι. Και εμείς με τη σειρά μας δημιουργούμε μία τελειότερη ιδέα από την ανθρώπινη, την ύψιστη, την ιδέα ενός Θεού τέλειου, ανώτερου, δυνατότερου από τον άνθρωπο. Εάν ο Θεός ήθελε να δημιουργήσει μία ‘ανώτερη’ ιδέα από αυτόν απλά δεν θα μπορούσε, καθώς δεν υπάρχει κάτι τελειότερο, ανώτερο από αυτόν.

Τι είναι τελικά ο Θεός; Ο Θεός είναι μία φαντασιακή δημιουργία του ανθρώπου και στην αρχαιοελληνική κοινωνία ο κόσμος δημιούργησε τους Θεούς και οι Θεοί τον άνθρωπο. Αυτό το μάγμα των φαντασιακών σημασιών δημιούργησε με τη σειρά του την ιδέα ότι ο άνθρωπος δημιουργήθηκε από τον Θεό κάτι για το οποίο διατηρώ σοβαρές επιφυλάξεις. Αμφισβητώ λοιπόν την θεϊκή φύση του ανθρώπου και προτείνω την ορθολογικότερη λύση της καταγωγής από τους πιθήκους. Η ιδέα ενός πιθήκου δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο, παρά η ιδέα ενός τέλειου Θεού. Το φαντασιακό του πιθήκου δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο, που με τη σειρά του το ανθρώπινο φαντασιακό έχει ήδη δημιουργήσει τον υπεράνθρωπο ή Θεό. Έτσι δειλά-δειλά θα πρέπει να ανάψουμε και ένα καντήλι για τον Άγιο-πίθηκο.

Moscow and Ankara move in on Lebanon's offshore energy potential

With his sharp instincts for chances in the field of energy, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was stirred into discreet action by Israeli entrepreneurs' discovery in the past year of a gas bonanza - three fields, dubbed Tamar, Dalit and Leviathan, off Israel's Mediterranean coast, debkafile's Moscow sources report. Their currently estimated reserves of 25 trillion cubic feet would more than cover Israel's energy needs and enable it to become a gas exporter, revolutionizing an economy which has developed despite a paucity of natural resources.
Neither did Putin miss Beirut's claim that Israel was "looting" Lebanese gas resources, or that Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri had encountered a polite rejection when travelled to Nicosia on Oct. 21 to ask Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias for help in mapping the borders of oil and gas fields in the Mediterranean.
Moscow accordingly went into action by inviting Hariri for a visit, which took place Nov. 16-17.
With his back to the wall in a life-and-death struggle to save his government from falling into the hands of Hizballah, the Lebanese prime minister was granted the rare honor of an elaborate welcome by both Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev. The Russian prime minister then pitched into his spiel: Moscow could help Lebanon place itself on the map of oil and gas fields and pipelines in the eastern Mediterranean. But to exploit its oil and gas wealth under the sea, Lebanon needed Russia as energy partner and provider of funds, equipment and skilled labor.

Russia would reciprocate with heavy investments in the Lebanese economy that would restore Beirut to its former prestige as financial capital of the Middle East and an assured supply of advanced weapons at token prices to secure those investments.
None of this prevented the Russian prime minister from sending a delegation to Tel Aviv last week to sound out Israel's gas new tycoons for opportunities. On offer were Russian investments in funds and equipment and a Russian-Israeli partnership in laying the gas pipeline which Israel and Greece are planning as part of their evolving strategic alliance
The Lebanese prime minister left Moscow with an understanding in his pocket on three points. As a mark of Russian goodwill, he was promised the gift of six MI 24 helicopters 31 T-72 tanks, 36 130 mm cannons complete with half a million shells and thirty thousand artillery shells – an unprecedented donation to a country outside Moscow's sphere of influence.
Their understanding extended to three key areas:
1. They would discuss big Russian firms building a number of gas-powered electricity plants in Lebanon, backed by Kremlin guarantees and financing – against a Lebanese guarantee to purchase their output over a 30-year period.
2. The Russian-built Arab Gas Pipeline Project Phase II, designed to bring gas from Egypt and run through Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey, would grow a Lebanese branch. On Dec. 5, a Kremlin official said: “We want to study a possibility of gas shipment from Syria to Lebanon, for example, by using the Arab Gas Pipeline capacity.”
3. Moscow offered to build three nuclear power plants in Turkey.
The second understanding was the real reason for Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Beirut Wednesday, Nov. 24 and his talks with Hariri. Erdogan now has a new interest in defusing the tensions in Lebanon and keeping Hariri in power.
debkafile's military sources say that, in addition to his abiding interest in energy, Vladimir Putin keeps his eye on the big Russian naval base going up in Tartous, Syria. As headquarters of the Russian Black Sea and Mediterranean fleets, this base will also guard Moscow's investments and holdings in gas and oil fields in the Mediterranean.

Islam, Secularism and the Battle for Turkey's Future

A deep power struggle is under way in the Republic of Turkey. Most outside observers see this as the latest phase in the decades-long battle between Islamism and Kemalist secularism. Others paint it as traditional Anatolia’s struggle against modern Istanbul, egalitarianism versus economic elitism or democracy’s rise against authoritarianism. Ultimately, the struggle boils down to a fight over a single, universal concept: power.

The following special report recounts how an Islamist-oriented Anatolia has emerged to challenge the secular foundation of the modern Turkish state. While those looking at Turkey from the outside are often unaware of Turkey’s internal tumult, a labyrinthine internal power struggle influences virtually every move Turkey makes in its embassies, schools, courts, news agencies, military bases and boardrooms. Though the Turkish identity crisis will not be resolved by this power struggle, the battle lines drawn during the fight will define how the country operates for years to come.

A Power Struggle Rooted in Geopolitics

Turkey occupies a key geostrategic position. It sits at the crossroads of Asia and Europe and forms a bridge between the Black and Mediterranean seas. Turkey’s core historically has centered on the isthmus that straddles the Sea of Marmara and Black Sea. Whether the map says Constantinople

or Istanbul, whoever lays claim to the Bosporus and Dardanelles has control over one of the most active and strategic commercial routes in the world, a key military vantage point against outside invaders, and a launchpad for expansion into Eurasia.

When Turkey is powerful, the country follows a Pan-Islamic model and can extend itself far and wide, from ruling over the Arabs and balancing the Persians in the Middle East to challenging the clout of Christian Europe in the Balkans to blocking Russia in the Caucasus and Central Asia. But when Turkey is weak, its neighborhood transforms from a geopolitical playground into a prison.

Turkey, then the multiethnic Ottoman Empire, found itself in the latter position at the end of World War I. With the aid of the victorious European powers, currents of ethnic nationalism surged through the empire, dissolving the bonds of Ottoman control. The final blow to the Ottoman core came via the 1920 Treaty of Sevres, which dismembered the empire by ceding territory to the leading Allied powers and to the Greeks, Armenians and Kurds — a period of history that continues to haunt Turks to this day.

Times of crisis call for great leaders; for Turkey, that leader was Mustafa Kemal — who earned the honorific “Ataturk,” Turkish for “Father of the Turks” — and whose face still graces statues, currency, paintings and emblems in every corner of the country. Ataturk sought to save the Turkish ethnic core from Sevres syndrome, as it is known in Turkey today, and to create a true nation-state. His tool of choice was nationalism, though his definition of Turkish nationalism rejected Pan-Islamism and instead concerned itself primarily with those Turkish citizens living in the Ottoman core that would become the new and modern republic. Kemalist nationalism was also deeply steeped in secularism, with an uncompromising separation of mosque and state.

To preserve his vision of the Turkish republic, Ataturk bolstered a secular elite that would dominate the banks and industry and maintain a firm grip over the country’s armed forces. Ataturk regarded the Turkish military as the guardian of the Kemalist state, a responsibility that Turkish generals have frequently exploited to mount coups against the civilian political authority. For decades, this secularist-Kemalist model prevailed in Turkey while a more traditional, Islamist-minded Anatolian class watched in frustration as it largely remained sidelined from the corridors of power.

The post-World War I era saw Turkish expansion into Europe effectively blocked, leading Turkey to turn its attention inward toward the Anatolian Peninsula, focusing on consolidating power from within. Though it would take several decades to manifest itself, the rise of Anatolian forces that would challenge the supremacy of the Istanbul elite in many ways was inevitable.

Indeed, as the 21st century approached, a tremor began spreading through Turkey’s political landscape. By then, Turkey had gone through its fair share of political tumult. But with time, it had consolidated enough internally to start looking abroad again through a Pan-Islamic lens. The Islamic vision was rooted in the Milli Gorus, or National View, movement, which arose in the 1970s as a religiously conservative challenge to the left-wing secular tradition. The election of the Islamist-rooted Refah Partisi, or Welfare Party (RP) in 1995 officially brought political Islam to the halls of power in modern Turkey, though the secular-dominated National Security Council banned the party in less than two years. A more moderate strand of the Milli Gorus movement emerged with the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2001.

The Turkish Islamist Movement

The AKP is by no means pursuing the Islamist vision alone. A powerful force known as the Gulen movement has quietly and effectively penetrated the armor of the Kemalist state over four decades. The charismatic imam Fethullah Gulen, who lives in Pennsylvania, leads the transnational organization, along with a small group of what the Gulenists term “wise men.” Inside Turkey, the Gulen movement follows a determined agenda that aims to replace the Kemalist elite and transform Turkey into a more religiously conservative society. Outside Turkey, Gulen presents itself as a multifaith global organization working to bring businesses, religious leaders, politicians, journalists and average citizens together. Whatever its public relations moves, the Gulen movement is at base just one more player jockeying for power in Turkey.

The Kemalists have long viewed the Gulen movement as a critical threat to the secular nature of the Turkish republic. When Fethullah Gulen left Turkey for the United States in 1998, the court documents that had been issued against him included sermons in which he called on his followers to “move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers.” He also said that “the time is not yet right. You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it.”

More than a decade later, the Gulen movement has a presence in virtually all Turkey’s power centers. In its earlier years, the movement moved much more discreetly, focusing on moving into the “arteries of the system” without drawing attention to itself. Since 2007, however, when the AKP was elected with 47 percent of the popular vote, conditions have ripened such that the Gulen movement can be much more open about its activities in the country. Gulenists now transmit a strong sense of confidence and achievement in their discussions with outsiders, as the movement knows this is its moment and that decades of quiet work aimed at transforming Turkish society are paying off.

For its part, AKP does not walk in lockstep with the Gulen movement, nor does it want to become overly dependent on the Gulenists. The party does not see eye to eye with the Gulenists on a number of issues, and consciously attempts to keeps its distance from the group for fear of reinforcing secularist allegations that the AKP is pursuing a purely Islamist agenda. Likewise, the Gulenist movement will occasionally, albeit rarely, air its disagreements with the AKP. For instance, in the wake of the Turkish-Israeli flotilla crisis, in which nine Turkish citizens were killed during a raid by Israeli special operations forces on a flotilla full of pro-Palestinian activists, Fethullah Gulen said in an interview that the Insani Yardim Vakfi (IHH) aid group that led the flotilla had defied authority for failing to seek permission from Israel before attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. Gulen’s criticism of the aid organization came in stark contrast to the AKP’s denunciation of Israel’s actions and strong, public support for the IHH. Gulen apparently used the flotilla crisis as an opportunity to alter outside perceptions of his organization, showing that his pragmatism in responding to the situation has more in common with the West against critics who accuse the movement of being too strictly Islamist and extreme in its views. Yet Gulen’s comments also caused an outrage amongst much of the Turkish public (not to mention within the AKP), leading one of the movement’s leaders to retract the statements the next day. Clearly, tension exists between the AKP and Gulenists, but the two sides also need each other and share a desire to replace the traditional secular elite. This objective, along with the common threat they face from the secularist establishment, forms the basis of their symbiotic relationship: The Gulen movement provides the AKP with a social base, while the AKP provides the Gulenists with a political platform to push their agenda.

Turkey’s wrenching struggle for national identity reaches every corner of society. In the education realm, the Gulen movement is a powerful force, creating schools across the globe to extend Turkish influence and intelligence capabilities as the number of Turkish embassy staffers educated in Gulenist schools continues to rise. The struggle is fiercest in the security arena, with generals regularly being jailed over murky coup allegations. In the media arena, Turkey’s media giants wage war via editorials and lawsuits. In the world of business, the secularist Istanbul giants continue to dominate, though an emerging Anatolian merchant class is rapidly gaining prominence. Within the judiciary, the secularists of the high courts are locked into a battle against AKP allies in the lower courts over a series of thorny constitutional reforms that would go far to undermine Kemalist legal dominance. And on the street, Turkish citizens debate whether drinking raki (an anise-flavored liqueur) is offensive to the country’s Islamic culture and whether it is “too Islamic” to order halal meat when traveling outside of Turkey.

Education: Sowing Seeds in the Schools

Turkey’s power struggle begins in the classroom. The most intense period of ideological cultivation for many Turks takes place between grades eight through 12, and the Gulen movement has spent the past three decades working aggressively in the education sector to mold young minds in Turkish schools at home and abroad. The goal is to create a generation of well-educated Turks who ascribe to the Gulen tradition and have the technical skills (and under the AKP, the political connections) to assume high positions in strategic sectors of the economy, government and armed forces.

The AKP-run government distributes free textbooks published by a firm close to the Gulen movement in primary and high schools. Gulen-funded schools are increasing in number, along with thousands of public Imam Hatip schools and state-run Quran schools for high school education.

Since the AKP mostly appeals to Turkey’s religious conservative and lower-income families, many of the party’s potential political supporters attend public technical schools for working-class laborers as well as religiously oriented Imam Hatip schools, where girls are permitted to don the Islamic headscarf, for their high school education instead of regular high schools. Under Turkey’s current educational system, graduates from technical schools are only qualified to attend two-year colleges and graduates from Imam Hatip schools are only qualified to attend theological schools, even though many graduates from Imam Hatip schools want to pursue careers in law, medicine, engineering and other professions. Meanwhile, graduates from regular public and private high schools — where the headscarf is banned by law — are qualified to attend four-year accredited universities in seeking a higher education. Both the technical and Imam Hatip schools fall under the labor school category, and since graduates from labor schools are not permitted to attend four-year universities, much of the AKP’s younger political base is prevented from rising in economic stature when seeking a higher degree.

In an effort to change this system, the AKP government has been engaged in an intense struggle with the secularist-dominated State Council to revise the strict grade point average calculations such that graduates from all labor schools (including Imam Hatips) can enter all four-year universities (not only theological ones), from which they can rise to more prominent positions and remain loyal to the AKP and the Gulenists. The AKP has yet to succeed, but it has not given up on this crucial point on its education agenda.

The Gulen movement claims the majority of Turkish students are enrolled in its private and public schools. The Gulenist schools are not madrassas; in fact, they focus heavily on the sciences and math. That said, religious classes and customs can make their way into the curriculum and daily activities, especially in countries with existing Islamic links.

The Gulenist educational institutions are easily identified because they typically have newer facilities and better equipment than most schools, and they offer the most intensive preparation courses for university entrance exams. These exams will make or break a Turkish student’s career, and are something most Turkish youths remember as the most dreaded and stressful experience of their academic lives. Many Turkish parents are willing to pay a great deal of money to ensure that their children receive the preparation they need to pass their exams and get into a good university. Consequently, the Gulen movement has strategically developed private courses and Isik Evleri, or Lighthouses, which are tuition centers that arguably offer the best preparation for university exams for students and the best recruiting grounds for the Gulenists. For those exceptionally bright students that come from low-income families, private courses are offered for free.

Students who have taken these courses describe how the “elder brothers” who run these Lighthouses maintain an intense curriculum that keeps the students at school late and on the weekends instead of out socializing and engaging in behavior frowned upon by religious conservatives. Students may start going to Lighthouses two to three times a week, but can find themselves attending nearly every day of the week by the time they reach the end of the course. Based on their participation, attendance and performance in the courses, the Gulenist brothers are able to pick out the brightest and most loyal students as potential recruits. To test their loyalty, a student may be called late in the evening or early on a weekend morning and asked by his or her mentor to attend a function or perform community service. This is intended to help the Gulenists evaluate whether the student will respond to orders from his or her Gulenist mentors.

The Gulen movement and AKP have carried their presence to the university level as well. The pivot of the university battle is an institution called the Higher Education Council (YOK). YOK was created by the 1982 Turkish Constitution to keep a lid on political dissent in the universities, since prior to the 1980 military coup, universities were the driving forces behind the political violence between right- and left-wing activists that marred the 1970s in Turkey. Up until 2007, YOK was a bastion for hardcore secularists in Turkey to ensure their dominance over the universities and prevent the entrenchment of Islamists in Turkey’s higher education institutions.

When the last secular president of YOK retired in 2007, the AKP had its chance to appoint one of its own, professor Yusuf Ziya Ozcan, an AKP loyalist and sympathizer of the Gulen movement. Since then, YOK has been at the forefront of the highly polarizing headscarf issue in Turkey and has used its powers to appoint religious conservatives to university presidencies. Under the AKP’s watch, and particularly since 2007, 37 public universities and 22 new private universities have been built, many of them in Anatolian cities such as Konya, Kayseri and Gaziantep where the Anatolian business class is concentrated or in less-populated and impoverished cities where young Turks have traditionally lacked access to higher education. The private universities are mostly funded by Gulenist businessmen.

Strategic Placement

But the Gulen movement and AKP do not only want loyal students to attend Gulen-run universities. Indeed, a core part of their strategy is to ensure the placement of their students in a variety of secular institutions where they can gradually grow in number and position themselves to influence strategic centers of Turkish society. For example, the university results of a Gulenist student may qualify him to attend the most elite university in Istanbul, but the movement will arrange for the student to attend a military academy instead, where the Gulenists are trying to increase their presence. While at the military academy, the student will quietly remain in touch with his Gulenist mentor, but will be careful not to reveal any religious tendencies that would flag him and deny him promotion. Once placed in a strategic institution, whether in the military, police, judiciary or major media outlet, the graduate continues to receive guidance from a Gulenist mentor, allowing the movement to quietly and directly influence various organs of society. The Gulen movement is also known to influence its young followers to attend universities in cities away from their families where the movement can provide them with free housing. This separation allows the Gulen to step in as a family replacement and strengthen its bond with the student while he or she is away from home.

Gulenist Schools’ Expanding Global Influence

Over the past few decades the Gulen movement has spread to virtually every corner of the globe through its expansive education network. The Gulenist international footprint comprises 1,000 private schools (according to Gulen estimates) spanning 115 countries, including 35 African countries. These Gulenist schools can be found in small towns everywhere from Ethiopia, Bosnia, Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Cote d’Ivoire, Azerbaijan — and even the United States, where according to some estimates, the movement runs more than 90 charter public schools in at least 20 states.

Like their counterparts in Turkey, the facilities and quality of instruction at these schools are excellent, making them attractive places for elite families of various ethnicities to send their children to receive an education. Gulenist businessmen provide the majority of these schools’ funding. Such donors have given a portion of their incomes to schools in an assigned region in exchange for help finding business deals. The teachers of the schools are typically devout Gulenist followers willing to live far away from home in foreign lands for what they see as the greater mission of the Gulenist cause.

The curriculum at these schools includes math, science, and Turkish- and English-language instruction, but there is a deeper agenda involved than pedagogy. Graduates of these schools can usually speak Turkish fluently, have been exposed to Turkish culture and history, and are prepared for careers in high places. In regions like Africa and Central Asia in particular, where quality education is difficult to come by, the children of the political elites who attend these schools usually have developed a deep affinity for Turkish culture. As a result, the Gulenists are able to raise a generation of diplomats, security professionals, economists and engineers who are more likely to take Turkish national interests into account when they reach positions of influence.

The Gulenists have made a conscious attempt to avoid the perception that they are proselytizing to students through these schools, however. Lessons in Islam tend to be more prevalent in Gulenist schools where the religion already has a foothold. For example, Islam has a deep history in the Caucasus and Central Asia, though the religion was severely undermined by decades of Communist rule. Many Azerbaijanis, Kazakhs, Uzbeks and other descendants of the Soviet Union do not identify with Islam; the Gulenist schools in these regions aim to revive moderate Islam in the former Soviet territories. This is not to say that the Gulenists are radicalizing these countries, however. In fact, the Gulenists emphasize that the Turkish version of Islam that they teach is moderate in its approach and distinct from the strict Islamic practices of Saudi Arabia and Iran.

As such, the Gulenists are not welcome everywhere they would like to set up. Iran and Saudi Arabia, neither of which wants a foreign strand of Islam influencing its people, have both shut the Gulenist schools out. In the Netherlands, where concerns over the growth of Islam run particularly high, the government has tried to force out Gulenist institutions. For its part, Russia — a natural competitor to Turkey — is extremely wary of this channel of influence, and has reportedly shut down at least 16 Gulenist schools so far. Russia is also heavily reasserting its influence in the former Soviet Union; to this end; it wishes to block the Gulenist movement from expanding in places like Central Asia and the Caucasus. Uzbekistan, with a government paranoid about external influences — especially those tinged with Islam, which they fear will inflame the various militant Islamist groups in the region — banned a number of Gulenist schools in 2000. The Gulenists have had greater success in setting up private high schools and universities in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. Meanwhile, Azerbaijani officials regularly complain in private about the Gulenist “encroachment” in their country, claiming they do not need Turks to instruct them on how be “good Muslims.” Even Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government reportedly shut down four Gulenist institutions in December 2009.

Such resistance is likely to increase as the movement’s profile rises and as countries grow nervous over Turkey’s expanding influence. In places like Africa, however, where countries are desperate for development, Muslims are in abundance, chaotic conditions prevail and foreign competition lacks the intensity it has in strategic battlegrounds like Central Asia, the Gulen movement has far more room to expand its educational, business and political ties.

Security: Taking on the Military

Ataturk, a military man at heart, wanted to ensure his work and vision for Turkey would remain intact long after his death. The Turkish armed forces seized responsibility for that legacy upon his death. Article 35 of the Army Internal Service Law of 1935 gives the military the constitutional right to protect and defend the Turkish homeland and the republic. While the Turkish Constitution outlaws the removal of democratically elected governments by force, according to the majority of the armed forces and the Kemalist camp, a constitutional republic is defined as the liberal and secular republic founded by Ataturk, not the religiously conservative republic growing under the rule of the Islamist-oriented AKP.

Turkish generals throughout much of Turkey’s history interpreted these laws as permitting the armed forces to intervene in civilian affairs whenever stability was threatened or the secular fabric of the country showed signs of unraveling. Consequently, Turkey has experienced three military coups — in 1960, 1971 and 1980 — and one “soft coup” in 1997, when the military worked through the National Security Council to bring down the government without dissolving the parliament or suspending the Constitution. When the military was not directly holding the political reins, it did so indirectly via the so-called Derin Devlet or “Deep State,” which worked in the parliament, courts and media to ensure that Turkey’s Islamists remained impotent. The Deep State refers to a murky network of members from the armed forces and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), some with links to organized criminal syndicates and ultranationalist groups that view themselves as the guardians of the secular republic, and are willing to ignore the law to uphold that secular tradition.

Turkey’s Islamists knew that if they had any chance of overturning the power balance of the state, they would have to take on the armed forces. The process would be slow, quiet and deliberate, but would ultimately see the military stripped of its long-held untouchable status.

From Deep State to Ergenekon

The Gulen movement began this task with the police intelligence services. The Turkish police force had long been the weakest institution within the security apparatus, largely a reflection of the country’s rural-urban divide through much of the 20th century. In the early part of the century, the rural population comprised two-thirds of the country, giving the gendarmerie, the branch of the armed services responsible for the security of the countryside, far more influence than the police, which patrolled urban areas. As more Turks began moving to the cities in the latter half of the century and eventually came to outnumber the rural population, however, the police steadily gained clout, providing the Gulen movement with a rare opportunity. Since the police were not a powerful force at the time, secularists within the security establishment did not scrutinize them as carefully. As a result, background checks for Islamist tendencies in police officers were more lax, allowing religious conservatives to gradually increase their presence in the institution under the Gulen movement’s guidance. Within three decades, the police, and particularly police intelligence, came under the umbrella of the AKP and Gulen movement.

The Islamists now had a powerful tool with which to undercut their secularist rivals. Not only did they enjoy the pervasiveness of a security network that patrols the vast majority of Turkey’s population and the wiretapping capabilities to investigate the bowels of the security establishment, they also had a powerful machine in the form of the AKP to uproot the Deep State and neutralize the military’s grip over the government. The AKP spent its first five years in power from 2002 to 2007 trying to establish a working relationship with the Turkish General Staff as it made inroads into the National Security Council and started playing a role in the appointment of senior military leaders. In summer 2007, as the party prepared itself for a landslide election victory, the AKP’s moves against the military took a bold turn in the form of the now-infamous Ergenekon probe.

Ergenekon is an investigation launched in June 2007 upon the discovery of a few grenades in the slums of Istanbul. As word of the investigation hit the newsstands, allegations began flying about how the Deep State was at work again to overthrow the AKP government. Alleged anti-AKP conspirators had their phones tapped, and purported transcripts of their conversations were published in the (mostly Gulenist-backed) media. Meanwhile, hundreds of suspects, including journalists, retired soldiers, academics and everyday criminals, were arrested in predawn raids for allegedly taking part in this conspiracy.

Though there is little doubt that elements of the Deep State were legitimately rolled up in this Ergenekon probe, there is also reason to believe that this probe took on a life of its own — and increasingly became a tool with which to quash political dissent. The AKP defended the probe to the outside world as a sign of Turkey’s democratization, arguing that Turkey was finally evolving to a point where the military could be brought under civilian control. But as the Ergenekon probe continued to grow, the legitimacy of the indictments began to be questioned with greater frequency. By late 2009, the investigations began to slow down. Then, in January 2010, another purported conspiracy was uncovered.

Breaking Precedent with Jailed Generals

A new and even more politically explosive coup plot was revealed in January by Taraf, a newspaper regularly praised by Gulenists. The plot, called “Balyoz,” Turkish for “Sledgehammer,” allegedly involved 162 members of the armed forces, including 29 generals. The group reportedly composed a 5,000-page document in 2003, shortly after the AKP came to power, detailing plans to sow violence in the country and create the conditions for a military takeover to “get rid of every single threat to the secular order of the state.” The plot allegedly included crashing a Turkish jet over the Aegean Sea in a dogfight with a Greek jet to create a diplomatic crisis with Athens and bombing the Fatih and Beyazit mosques in Istanbul. By late February, more than 40 military officers were arrested, including four admirals, a general, two colonels and former commanders of the Turkish navy and air force.

The military was backed against a wall. Though it still had enough influence over the courts to fight the arrests, there was no question it was locked into an uphill battle against the Islamist forces. The Ergenekon probes that began in 2007 went after retired soldiers, but the arrests of active-duty generals in Sledgehammer completely broke with precedent. More recently, the AKP has taken it upon itself to exercise its constitutional right to make decisions on promotions for high-ranking members of the military — something that no civilian government dared in the past. What was once considered unthinkable for Turks across the country was now becoming a reality: The military, the self-proclaimed vanguard of the secular state, was becoming impotent as a political force.

While the AKP and Gulen movement already have de facto ownership of the country’s police intelligence, they are also making significant inroads into MIT, the national intelligence service. Long dominated by the secularist establishment, MIT historically spent a good portion of its time keeping tabs on domestic political opponents like the AKP. The Turkish National Security Council in late May appointed 42-year-old bureaucrat Hakan Fidan as the new MIT chief. Though Fidan has both a civilian and military background, making him more palatable to the army and civilian government, his sympathies appear to lean heavily toward the AKP. This has not gone unnoticed by Israel, which has launched a campaign to defame Fidan in various media outlets, alleging that he would be more prone to sharing intelligence with countries like Iran. Notably, Fethullah Gulen publicly praised Fidan for his previous work as leader of the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), which works closely with the Gulen movement abroad. Fidan plans to increase MIT’s capabilities and focus on foreign intelligence collection, allowing more room for the police intelligence (already under heavy AKP and Gulen influence) to operate at home. By drawing a more distinct line between foreign and domestic intelligence and shifting the MIT’s focus outward, the AKP and Gulen movement are advancing their aims of using intelligence as a foreign policy tool to promote Turkish expansion abroad while slowly denying the secularists the ability to use MIT for domestic espionage purposes.It has now become all the more imperative for the military to maintain a hold on the security issues that still give the armed forces some leverage against the AKP. The Kurdish question and the dispute with Greece over Cyprus top this list, but even here the AKP is working aggressively to take ownership of these issues by recasting them as inherently political problems resolvable through economic development and diplomacy as opposed to military might. As long as Turkey’s economy remains stable, the military simply does not have the popular dissatisfaction necessary to form a campaign against the AKP and Gulenist forces. The Turkish armed forces thus no longer have the power exclusively to chart Turkey’s political course, and whatever remaining power they have in the political arena continues to slip by the day.

Media and Business: Challenging the Secular Establishment

Controlling the Message

Turkey’s media sits at the center of the country’s power struggle. Newspapers are the source of leaks that have thrown generals in jails, courtrooms are filled with legal battles between media agencies and op-eds spar daily over which ideological direction the country should take.

The media is an especially potent tool in the Gulenist and AKP fight against the armed forces. The vast majority of leaks in the Ergenekon and Sledgehammer probes mysteriously emanated from a single newspaper, Taraf. Taraf was founded in 2007 as a paper for liberal democrats shortly before the Ergenekon probe was launched. The Gulenists hail Taraf as Turkey’s “most courageous” news outlet for its detailed coverage of Deep State. It printed everything from telephone transcripts of alleged coup plotters to satellite imagery of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants crossing the Iraqi-Turkish border to document alleged military negligence. While the Gulenists claim Taraf’s success in investigative journalism is due to brave, disillusioned soldiers willing to leak information, others within the secularist camp suspect the transfers of sensitive information to Taraf have arisen due to years of successful infiltration of the armed forces by the Gulen movement.

Most of Turkey’s predominantly secularist media, including the dailies Hurriyet, Milliyet and Cumhurriyet, have been around as long as the republic itself. Beginning in the mid-1980s, however, Islamist forces began making their appearance in the media world through newspapers like Zaman, Star, and (since 2007) Sabah. Today, these newspapers have come to dominate the Turkish media landscape, providing pro-AKP coverage. Even in the English-language arena, which is vital for the outside world to monitor developments in Turkey, the Gulenist Today’s Zaman is now outpacing the secularist Hurriyet Daily News. The Gulenist-backed papers also have the benefit of a massive, well-organized social network to distribute newspapers for free, boosting their circulation. Meanwhile, the secularist newspapers are increasingly finding themselves faced with a choice between pleading political neutrality or fighting legal battles in the courtroom.

The most prominent media war in this power struggle is being played out between Dogan Media, owned by one of Turkey’s leading business conglomerates, and Feza Yayincilik media group, with Dogan’s Hurriyet and Feza’s Zaman newspapers respectively at the epicenter of the battle. Dogan Media is extremely uncomfortable with the shift toward one-party rule under the AKP, and has publicly proclaimed the need to balance against the rapid growth of pro-AKP/Gulenist news. After the Dogan group devoted considerable coverage to a corruption scandal involving money laundering through Islamist charities in Germany by senior members of the Erdogan government in 2008, the media group soon found itself slapped with a $2.5 billion fine for alleged unpaid back taxes.

While tax fraud is relatively common in Turkey’s media sector across the political spectrum, and Dogan Media was no exception, suspicions run deep that Dogan was singled out as an example to other media of what can happen to a powerful business tycoon who challenges the AKP. Members within the pro-AKP/Gulenist media camp counter that Dogan got what it deserved, and cite the fining of the group as an example of a more democratic society that no longer shies away from punishing powerful offenders. At this point, Turkey’s media battles intersect the corporate arena, where a quiet and brooding competition is being played out between the old Istanbul elite and the rising Anatolian tigers.

Anatolia Takes on the Istanbul Business Elite

A handful of secular family conglomerates based in Istanbul have dominated Turkey’s business sector for decades, serving as Turkey’s economic outlet to the rest of the world. On the other side of the struggle stand the millions of small- and medium-sized businesses with roots in more religiously and socially conservative Anatolia. While the secular-nationalists still enjoy the upper hand in the business world, the Anatolian tigers are slowly gaining ground.

At present, the Turkish economy is dominated by names like Sabanci, Koc, Dogan, Dogus, Zorlu and Calik. Dogan Media occupies the staunchly secular niche of the business sector at odds with the AKP’s Islamist-rooted vision, and has taken a public stand against the ruling party. Sabanci and Dogus also belong in the staunchly secular group, but tend to exhibit a more neutral stance in public toward the AKP for business reasons, such as avoiding the sort of legal battles Dogan has faced. Calik and Zorlu groups are far more opportunistic: They keep close political connections to the AKP to secure business contracts and tolerate the Gulen movement, though they are not considered true believers in the Islamist agenda. The last category consists of business conglomerates legitimately pro-AKP and Gulenist, such as Ulker Group and Ihlas Holding.

The lines dividing Turkey’s business, media and politics have become increasingly blurred over the years. Several of Turkey’s prominent business conglomerates contain media outlets, and the AKP has worked to keep those media outlets friendly, or at least neutral. Those that oblige often obtain business deals with the state, while those that resist can find themselves slapped with lawsuits or having to transforming their newspapers into mostly apolitical tabloids to avoid political pressure. Calik Group is perhaps the most obvious example of the corporate benefits that can follow a healthy relationship with the AKP. In April 2007, the state-run Saving Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) seized Sabah news agency in a predawn raid on the charge of fraud of its owner. Sabah is Turkey’s second-largest media group; prior to the raid, it was considered the strongest liberal and secular voice in the Turkish media. The TMSF sold the group to Calik Holding in an auction in which Calik was the sole bidder, after which Erdogan’s son-in-law became CEO of the agency. Loans from two state-owned banks (made allegedly at AKP’s urging) and from a media agency based in Qatar financed the deal. Today, Sabah is considered pro-AKP.

This intersection between politics and business can also be seen in the energy sector. The AKP has a strategy to boost four energy firms in the country that have aligned themselves with the ruling party. The firms are divided among Turkey’s four main energy areas of interest: Ciner’s Park Teknik in Russia, SOM in Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, Inci in Iraq, and AKSA in Turkey. Park Teknik and AKSA are expected to work together to pursue a deal with Russia to build Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

The AKP and Gulen movement lack the leverage the secularist-nationalists hold in the banking sector, but that has not stopped them from finding resources to finance strategic projects, as the Sabah takeover demonstrates. Banks such as Turkiye Is Bankasi — created by Ataturk in the early days of the republic to maintain a secular stronghold on the country’s finances — are difficult to compete with, but state-owned Ziraat Bankasi has increasingly become the AKP’s go-to bank. Ziraat bank CEO Can Akin Caglar comes from a pro-AKP/Gulenist background. Prior to becoming Ziraat CEO in 2003, he worked for Turkiye Finans Bank, a known conservative bank owned jointly by Ulker and Boydak Groups. (Ulker is a staunchly pro-AKP/Gulenist business conglomerate.) Later, 60 percent of its shares were sold to Saudi Arabia’s National Commercial Bank in 2007. The Gulen movement also deposits much of the donations it receives with Turkiye Finans, now named Bank Asya.

The Gulenist Business Cycle

The AKP and Gulen movement recognize the lack of space for competition with the Western-oriented trade markets ruled by Koc, Sabanci and the other secularist business elites. Instead, the Islamist forces have created their own business model, one that speaks for Anatolia and focuses on accessing markets in places like the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. The drivers behind this business campaign are Turkey’s Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (MUSIAD) and Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON), made up of thousands of small- and medium-sized business owners. TUSKON has existed for just five years, but is slowly emerging as an alternative to the larger, and more well-established business associations like Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TUSIAD), which represent big-name firms like Sabanci, Koc and Dogan (and, which as expected, support the secularists).

As opposed to the Istanbul-entrenched secularist corporations, most businessmen who belong to TUSKON and MUSIAD hail from small, generally poorer and religiously conservative towns and cities across Anatolia. TUSKON is tightly linked into the Gulen movement and forms an integral part of the Gulenist business, education, political and even foreign intelligence agenda. The business association organizes massive business conferences in various parts of the globe attended by high-level AKP officials that aim to bring hundreds of Turkish businessmen into contact with their foreign counterparts. While there are variations to how the Gulenist business cycle works, the following is a basic example:

A small-business owner from the eastern Anatolian city of Gaziantep makes a living manufacturing and selling shirt buttons. A Gulenist invites the buttonmaker to a TUSKON business conference in Africa, where he will be put into contact with a shirtmaker from Tanzania who will buy his buttons. The Turkish buttonmaker and the Tanzanian shirtmaker are then incorporated into a broader supply chain that provides both with business across continents, wherever the Gulenists operate. In short, the Anatolian buttonmaker can expand his business tenfold or more if he belongs to the Gulenist network. In return, the Gulen movement will ask the buttonmaker to provide financial support for the development of Gulenist programs and schools in Tanzania. The end result is a well-oiled and well-financed business and education network spanning 115 countries across the globe. Not only do these business links translate into votes when elections roll around, they also (along with the schools) form the backbone of the AKP’s soft power strategy in the foreign policy sphere.

Foreign Policy: Enabling the Rise

The Gulenist transnational network is a natural complement to the AKP’s foreign policy agenda. While many within the secularist and nationalist camp are highly uncomfortable with the notion of Pan-Islamism and Pan-Turkism — strategies that, in their eyes, brought about the collapse of the Ottoman Empire — AKP followers embrace their Ottoman past and favor an expansionist agenda. As espoused by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey is a unique geopolitical power, at the same time European and Asian, Middle Eastern and Central Asian, Balkan and Caucasian and straddling the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean seas. In the AKP’s view, Turkey’s potential is great, and though it shies away from the term “neo-Ottomanism” for fear of provoking an imperial image, it is difficult to see Turkey’s current foreign policy as anything but a drive to return to its Ottoman sphere of influence.

Members of the secularist camp historically have dominated Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They continue to maintain a strong presence in Turkish embassies, since Turkish diplomats, as in many countries, generally must serve an average of 20 years before they reach a position of influence. But this, too, is gradually shifting under AKP rule: Foreign Ministry sources report than an increasing number of graduates from Gulenist schools are being recruited into the diplomatic service. To help speed up the Islamist integration with the Foreign Ministry, the AKP-led government has passed legislation to allow Turks to become ambassadors at younger ages — lowered from 45 to 35. Turkey has also accelerated the opening of embassies in countries where the Gulen movement has a strong presence. In 2009 alone, Turkey opened 10 new embassies, the majority of them in Africa. These cities included Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Accra (Ghana), Maputo (Mozambique), Antananarivo (Madagascar), Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire), Yaounde (Cameroon), Luanda (Angola), Bamako (Mali), Niamey (Niger), N’Djamena (Chad), Bogota (Colombia) and Valetta (Malta). In addition, Turkey uses its foreign policy arm to negotiate with countries across the Middle East, Eurasia and Africa to eliminate visa restrictions and open up new markets for Anatolian businessmen.

The Turkish Cooperation Development Agency (TIKA) is also key to these foreign policy efforts. The Turkish government created TIKA in the early 1990s to forge ties with former Soviet countries with which it enjoyed a shared Turkic heritage, though TIKA did not make much headway initially. The AKP, however, reinvigorated the TIKA in recent years for use as a public diplomacy tool, transforming it into a highly active development agency. Davutoglu has even referred to TIKA as a second foreign ministry. TIKA’s development projects, particularly in Central Asia and Africa, overlap heavily with the Gulen movement. As mentioned, Turkey’s new national intelligence chief, Hakan Fidan — who shares the AKP’s vision for an expansionist foreign policy — formerly headed TIKA.

Some Gulenists privately boast that their institutions abroad, whether schools, hospitals or other types of developmental agencies, serve as useful intelligence satellites for the Foreign Ministry. If a problem erupts in a country in Central Asia, for example, where press freedoms are nonexistent and information is extremely difficult to come by, the Foreign Ministry can tap local Gulenist contacts for information and to facilitate government contacts. Gulenists abroad often learn local languages, allowing them to act as Turkish translators. They have also developed close relationships with foreign governments through their work as well as their students, who often are sons and daughters of the local political elite.

Success in Image Control

AKP officials often deny Gulenist claims of serving as intelligence satellites for fear the AKP could be seen as pursuing a subversive global Islamist agenda. Indeed, some on the far left in Turkey have characterized the Gulen movement as a group of violent Islamist extremists ultimately aiming to impose Shariah in Turkey. Though inaccurate, this view belongs to a fringe group within the secularist camp that wants to reverse Turkey’s trajectory.

For this reason, the AKP has made a considerable effort to pursue negotiations with the European Union for full-fledged membership despite the high probability such talks are unlikely to lead anywhere. Poll numbers reveal how Turks increasingly are realizing that the chances of EU membership have become a distant possibility. Yet the AKP cannot afford to allow that disillusionment to seep into its foreign policy. Candidates for EU membership must have a modern economy, a military under civilian control and an image of secularism. Privately, AKP officials agree that unanimous EU approval for Turkish membership would be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to attain. But were Turkey to drop its bid, turned its gaze solely toward Asia, and proceeded with a Pan-Islamic foreign policy, the party would have a much more difficult time arguing that it is not the threatening Islamist power the secularists have sought to paint it as being. Instead, the AKP and the Gulenists want to portray themselves as having everything in common with the liberal, democratic values of the West — and that these very values have driven its efforts to bring the military under civilian control.

Image control becomes especially important in Turkey’s relationship with the United States. Conspiracy theories run rife in Turkey, and both sides of the power struggle will argue that the United States is backing one faction against the other. For example, some secularists point to Gulen’s Pennsylvania residency and his political asylum in the United States as “evidence” the U.S. government supports the AKP’s rise. At the same time, the Islamists will claim that the United States backs the secularists, and provided covert support for the 2007 “soft coup” attempt by the secularist-dominated courts to ban the AKP. Despite these charges being contradictory, the AKP is very conscious of the need to present itself as a nonthreatening, democratic power with an Islamist background capable of facilitating U.S. objectives in the Islamic world. This explains why, despite its strong convictions that Israel’s actions against the Turkish aid flotilla were inexcusable, the AKP quietly dispatched a delegation to Washington to mitigate some of the damage that was inflicted on the U.S.-Turkish relationship over the incident. Likewise, as the Gulen movement demonstrated in the wake of the flotilla crisis, the Gulenists will occasionally publicize their disagreements with the AKP on certain issues in an attempt to present their movement as a more compatible partner with the West.

Keeping Turkey’s EU bid alive and relations with Washington on an even keel will thus help the Islamists undermine secularist efforts to portray the AKP in a negative light abroad. Though the AKP will continue to keep a fair bit of distance from the Gulen in its dealings abroad to protect this image, the Gulenist transnational network undeniably gives the AKP economic reach, social influence and political linkages vital to Ankara’s foreign policy.

Judiciary: Neutralizing the High Courts

Whether the issue is headscarves worn in universities, media firms charged with tax evasion or soldiers charged with coup-plotting, virtually every strand of Turkey’s power struggle eventually finds its way to the courts.

The dividing line in the judiciary lies between the secularist-dominated high courts and the AKP-influenced low courts. This division results in a dizzying judicial system in which court rulings are often mired in political mayhem.

The high judiciary in Turkey is made up of the Constitutional Court (or “Anayasa Mahkemesi” in Turkish), the High Court of Appeals (“Yargıtay”), the State Council (“Danistay”), and the High Panel Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK). The seven-member HSYK plays an instrumental role in the appointment of judges and prosecutors. In the current system, the HSYK is composed of the justice minister, the justice minister’s undersecretary, three members appointed by Yargitay and two by Danistay. The secularists have long controlled the most powerful judicial institutions.

The headscarf controversy is perhaps the best illustration of the struggle between religious and secularist forces in the judiciary. Turkey’s secularist-dominated State Council has long barred Turkish women from wearing the headscarf in the public sector, making it difficult for religious females in Turkey to seek a university education or a career in the government, judiciary or state-run education system. The AKP obtained sufficient votes for a proposed amendment in 2008 to lift the headscarf ban, but the secularist-controlled Constitutional Court annulled the proposed amendment four months later in a non-appealable decision. Shortly thereafter, the two sides butted heads again when the Constitutional Court threatened to ban the AKP on the charge of being “the focus of activities against secularism.” The AKP escaped the ban, but at the cost of backing off from the headscarf ban for now.

Secularists continue to hold the upper hand against the Islamists in the judiciary. Through their dominance of the high courts, the secularists hold the single most potent weapon in this struggle: The ability to ban political parties for violating the secular tradition of the state. The AKP is all too familiar with this threat. The Constitutional Court has banned three AKP predecessors — Milli Selamet Partisi (in 1980), Refah Partisi (in 1998) and Fazilet Partisi (in 2001) — for “becoming the focus of anti-secularist activities.” Though the AKP is far more moderate in its approach than its predecessors, it just barely escaped a ban in 2008 over the headscarf issue over the same charge. So far, each time the court has struck the party, the AKP has come back even more resolute in its determination to undermine the secularists. Now, the AKP is ready to take on the judiciary with a package of constitutional amendments designed to strip the secularists of their judicial control.

With some modifications, this package of constitutional amendments calls for several critical changes. One is the restructuring of the Constitutional Court and HSYK, ending the secularist monopoly and giving the lower judiciary more clout. For example, the HYSK reforms call for increasing its membership from seven to 21, 10 of whom would be selected by 12,000 judges and prosecutors in lower courts across the country — where the AKP enjoys significant influence — while five would be appointed by the president. Another calls for binding party dissolution cases to parliamentary approval, thereby neutering the highest court’s ability to ban the party at will whenever the secularist-Islamist balance tilts toward the Islamists. This last resolution has not made it out of the parliament, though the AKP is sure to try again when the political climate is more conducive to success.

As expected, secularists in the high courts and the parliament — with behind-the-scenes military backing — strongly oppose these changes, charging that they will eliminate checks and balances in the government. They also claim that the reforms are illegal, as Article 4 of Turkey’s 1982 Constitution states that amendments to the first three articles of the Constitution — articles which declare Turkey a Turkish-speaking, democratic and secular republic loyal to the nationalism of Ataturk — cannot be proposed, much less implemented. Once again, both sides are seeking to seize the mantel of democracy, as the Islamists counter that an unelectable cabal runs the judiciary, and that these constitutional reforms are necessary to make Turkey more pluralistic and in line with Western standards of government.

The package of constitutional amendments got approval from the Constitutional Court and barely made it through Turkey’s parliament on May 7, with 336 votes in favor. While this passed the 330 threshold needed for the government to put the proposals to a referendum, the parliamentary vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to adopt the amendments without a referendum. The public referendum will be held Sept. 12, the anniversary of the 1980 military coup.

The battle lines are thus drawn, and the struggle will be fierce in the months ahead. AKP and Gulen leaders cannot claim with confidence that the referendum will pass, but if it does, the Islamists will establish the legal foundation to accelerate their political rise. If the referendum collapses, the secularists will retain the most critical weapon in their arsenal to uphold the Kemalist traditions of the republic. Even if the referendum fails, however, the struggle will be far from over. The next phase of the battle will be the 2011 elections, which the AKP is counting on to win a supermajority in the parliament to draft an entirely new Constitution that would further cement its power. Following the flotilla crisis, the AKP is likely to have a more difficult time in trying to achieve this goal after seeing its response to the incident backfire both at home and abroad. The main opposition secularist parties, the People’s Republican Party (CHP) and National Movement Party (MHP), were quick to seize the opportunity and blame the AKP for mismanaging the crisis and making Turkey appear reckless abroad. The post-flotilla backlash, combined with a recent rise in PKK attacks, have even led the AKP to make concessions to the secularist opposition, including a recent court decision to free some of those accused in the Sledgehammer probe. Still, even though the AKP’s rivals have several opportunities at hand, they are no longer dealing with the AKP from an obvious position of strength. The struggle of the secularists and the advent of the Anatolian masses is a factional feud that defies an easy resolution, but is a necessary component of Turkey’s regional rise.

Ο σύγχρονος χάρτης της (“Ελληνικής”) Τρομοκρατίας (με άφθονη λογοκρισία).

Πάνε χρόνια από την πτώση της χούντας και την έλευση Καραμανλή ως Μεσσία που θα ξανάφερνε πίσω την Κύπρο αλλά και την ελευθερία γνώμης στην προδομένη Ελληνική κοινωνία. Μπορεί ο Ιωαννίδης να ευαγγελιζόταν ότι “εξαφάνισε” τους αντιστασιακούς κατά τη σύντομη παντοδυναμία του αλλά αυτό αφήνει πολλά ερωτηματικά. Η ερώτηση άλλωστε θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα ν’ αντιστραφεί: “Που πήγαν όλοι οι αντιστασιακοί όταν ήρθε ο Ιωαννίδης; Τότε μάλιστα που η χώρα τους είχε απόλυτη ανάγκη λόγω της επερχόμενης Κυπριακής γενοκτονίας”;
Παλιά κουλούρια, ξεραμένα. Η νομιμοποίηση της Αριστεράς δεν αγκάλιασε όλους τους αντάρτες καθώς πολλοί είδαν με σκεπτικισμό τις εξελίξεις. Δεν ήταν λίγοι αυτοί που παρέμειναν αυτοεξόριστοι βλέποντας τη μεταπολίτευση ως “μάντρωμα” των αντιφρονούντων σε αστικό μαντρί.
Η δεξαμενή των ανταρτών ήταν και η πηγή στρατολόγησης για τις μετέπειτα οργανώσεις που χαρακτηρίστηκαν τρομοκρατικές. Ας μην ξεχνάμε ότι το κοινωνικό περίβλημα ήταν τότε έντονο, υπήρχε εργατική τάξη στην Ελλάδα, υπήρχε εκμετάλλευση, άρα υπήρχε και περιθώριο αγώνα. Σταδιακά ο στόχος των ενεργειών έγινε από ταξικός, ιδεολογικός. Εκεί υπήρξε ένα μεγάλο ξεκαθάρισμα στις τάξεις του αντάρτικου πόλεως που δε μπορούσαν να δεχθούν πως τόσοι ευνοημένοι, πλουτίσαντες επί χουντας (κατασκευαστές, εκδότες κλπ) παρέμεναν στο απυρόβλητο, διεκδικώντας μάλιστα δάφνες αντιστασιακών. Εκεί έγινε και η πρώτη μετάλλαξη αντικρατικής δράσης, όταν το ίδιο το Παπανδρεϊκό κράτος φάνταζε (ρητορικά τουλάχιστον) ως ιδεολογικός συγγενής.
Δεν ήταν λίγοι εκείνοι που κατηγορούσαν το τότε ΠΑΣΟΚ ότι υποθάλπτει αλλά και χρησιμοποιεί την τρομοκρατία για δικό του όφελος. Κατηγορίες βεβαίως που ποτέ δεν αποδείχτηκαν. Στα ίδια βήματα βάδισε η πρώιμη 17Ν, στοχεύοντας στους τότε “αντιφρονούντες” εκδότες, εισαγγελείς κλπ. Το τότε κατεστημένο κατηγορήθηκε μάλιστα ότι “διόριζε” και πολλούς υπόπτους για τρομοκρατική δράση (!), τακτική που μάλλον μεταλλάχθηκε δίνοντας δημόσια έργα σε νταβατζήδες από τους ίδιους υπουργούς.
Η δολοφονία Μπακογιάννη ήταν για πολλούς
το σημείο Χ. Οι αντικαπιταλιστές του παραδοσιακού αντάρτικου, οι ιδεολόγοι τύπου Γιωτόπουλου και άλλοι είδαν σε αυτό το χτύπημα πολλά κοινά στοιχεία με την απαγωγή και δολοφονία του Άλντο Μόρο, έργο της Ιταλικής “Κόκκινης Προβιάς” με προειδοποίηση μάλιστα Κίσσινγκερ (you will pay it dearly). Πολλοί τότε, ακόμη και στελέχη του ΠΑΣΟΚ έφτασαν να μιλούν για απ’ ευθείας σύνδεση των Αμερικάνικων μυστικών υπηρεσιών με την Ελληνική τρομοκρατία. Όλες οι δηλώσεις αυτών διαβάστε τες εδώ, μαζί με την τοποθέτηση του κυρίου Χρυσοχοΐδη που θα δούμε στη συνέχεια.
Το γεγονός αυτό άφησε μεγάλο κενό στη στρατολόγηση μελών για τη 17Ν που θεωρείτο η ναυαρχίδα. Ο πυρήνας υπήρχε αλλά η δυσπιστία ήταν έκδηλη. Τα γεγονότα που ακολούθησαν θα μπορούσαν να θεωρηθούν κωμικά, αν δεν ήταν βαμμένα με αίμα. “Πνευματικοί” σε παραλίες γυμνιστών, βιβλιαράκια του Παΐσιου, παρατημένα πλουσιόπαιδα (μόδα που ανθίζει και σήμερα) ήταν στους επιλαχόντες “αντικαταστάτες”.
Οι ανάγκες της εξουσίας όμως άλλαξαν. Τα κέντρα που στηλίτευσαν οι πρώην σύντροφοι υπουργοί (Παπαθεμελής, Σκουλαρίκης, Βαλυράκης) βούλιαξαν εμπρός στη Γερμανική λαίλαπα που τα ήθελε “όλα”. Με δοκιμασμένη οργάνωση στα πρότυπα της Ναζιστικής νεολαίας και άγρα “παλιών” που ήθελαν θέση και μεροκάματο, ξεπήδησαν οι γκρούπες που μαζί με τον “επαναστατικό αγώνα” λειτουργούσαν σε κοινοπραξία που θυμίζει “Siemens – SAIC” αντίστοιχα. Οι γκρούπες για το δρόμο, τους Κούρδους, το ΚΚΕ, ενώ ο ΕΑ για τα “χοντρά”.
Η 17Ν άρχισε να είναι μεγάλο βάρος. Από τη δράση της το 1997 έδιχνε ανεξέλεγκτη και πραγματική απειλή για το νέο σύστημα διακυβέρνησης. Οι βομβαρδισμοί της Σερβίας έφεραν τη μεγάλη ρήξη αφού όλος ο νεόδμητος “Νεοναζιστικός” χώρος μέχρι τότε έδειχνε να επικροτεί και να ενισχύει τις επιλογές Σημίτη για Ίμια, Οτσαλάν, Σερβία. “Αντεξουσιαστές Νεοναζί” λίντσαραν κούρδους αγωνιστές, υπέργηρους κομμουνιστές και προπαγάνδιζαν υπέρ των βομβαρδισμών. Πιστοί στα κελεύσματα της Νέας Γερμανικής εξουσίας.
Η 17Ν άρχισε ένα κρεσέντο ενεργειών που άλλωστε τις είχε προδιαγράψει με την επική προκήρυξη της το Μάρτιο
του 1997 (παρατίθεται στο τέλος του άρθρου και αξίζει να την διαβάσετε). Η 17Ν στην ουσία ξεκαθάριζε ότι δεν θα παίξει το νέο παιχνίδι Γερμανών και Αμερικάνων, ξεκινώντας την αντίστροφη μέτρηση για την εξάρθρωση της. Στοχοποίηση του νεοναζιστικού κατεστημένου που “ξεπέρασε ακόμη και το Αμερικάνικο” αλλά και βαριές κατηγορίες εναντίον του Σωκράτη Κόκκαλη που τον κατονομάζει ως πρώην πράκτορα της Στάζι και νυν της CIA. Το Παλιό ΠΑΣΟΚ είναι ήδη νεκρό μαζί με τον ιδρυτή του.
Το έργο της εξάρθρωσης της 17Ν ολοκληρώνει ο Μιχάλης Χρυσοχοΐδης το 2002. Ο Κουφοντίνας “πείθεται” να αναλάβει όλη την ευθύνη και να γίνει “λαϊκός ήρωας”, ο Γιωτόπουλος μοιάζει ακόμα και σήμερα με καζάνι έτοιμο να εκραγεί** μην πιστεύοντας πως την πάτησε. Κάποτε θα μιλήσει και αυτός αλλά δεν θα τον ακούσουν και πολλοί. Τα λοιπά παπαδοπαίδια δεν κατάφεραν να φτιάξουν την επουράνια Ιερουσαλήμ αφού η μέθοδος “Παϊσίου” μάλλον δεν έπιασε παρότι τα “πλουσιόπαιδα” είναι ο βασικός πυλώνας των σημερινών παρυφών και ιδανικά πρόβατα επί σφαγή στο άθλημα του αστικού πετροβολήματος.

Το σήμερα

Το σπάσιμο σχέσεων Γερμανίας – ΗΠΑ με τη Siemens – SAIC που έφερε τη χιονοστιβάδα αποκαλύψεων είχε συνέπειες και στο χώρο του τρομοκρατικού “μεροκάματου”. ΕΑ και Σέχτα είναι πλέον διαφορετικά μαγαζιά.
Σήμερα όπως είπαμε υπάρχει ο “ακρωτηριασμένος” ΕΑ, αφού δύο τουλάχιστον στελέχη του μεταπήδησαν στη Σέχτα holding όπως παραδέχτηκε και το state department με επίσημο έγγραφο. Τα δύο αυτά μέλη μπορεί να είναι και κάποιοι νεώτεροι της 17Ν που έμειναν ασύλληπτοι και πήραν μεταγραφή. Να σημειωθεί ότι εάν ισχύουν οι πληροφορίες, η απόσχιση έγινε πριν το 1997 και πρόκειται για “μεροκαματιάρηδες” και όχι ιδεολόγους. Γι’ αυτό και η “μεταγραφή”.
Η Σέχτα Holding είναι το αποτέλεσμα του “Γερμανικού μοντέλου” με πολλές οργανώσεις δορυφόρους και ετερόκλητα στοιχεία. Νέοι σε ηλικία, πιθανότατα καθοδηγούμενοι από τις προαναφερθείσες μεταγραφές των παλαιότερων. Χολυγουντιανή ιδεολογία, Heineken, Converse και Timberland. Τροφοδοτούνται και συντονίζονται μέσω του Νεογερμανικού Ιερατείου της Φρανκφούρτης που νιώθει μια ανασφάλεια με τις κινήσεις ΓΑΠ και την τοποθέτηση Χρυσοχοΐδη που δεν χρωστούν τίποτα στους Γερμανούς. Σε αντίθεση με τον ΕΑ που προβλέπεται να έρθει σε παύση εργασιών (αχρείαστος να ‘ναι), μάλλον η Σέχτα θα εξαρθρωθεί με τυμπανοκρουσίες. Μαζί με “άσυλα” και καταλήψεις όπου βρήκαν στέγη οι νέοι “μελανοχιτώνες”, “Jungsturm Adolf Hitler” όπως αλλιώς θέλετε πείτε τους .
Έτσι θα μείνουν άνεργα και πολλοί αλλοδαποί που όμως δεν είχαν κάποια “σκοτεινή” σκοπιμότητα, απλά κονόμαγαν από αλισβερίσια και ληστείες. Λογικό είναι να χαίρονται όταν χτυπούν Ελληνικούς στόχους αλλά τίποτε παραπάνω. Όταν κάποιος πυροβολεί με καλάσνικωφ 8χρονη μαθήτρια δημοτικού ή έγκυο εργαζόμενη γυναίκα, δεν χρειάζεται να είναι πράκτορας για να προκαλεί απέχθεια.
Κρίμα τον κόπο που είχαμε κάνει, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα χειρότερο από το delete στο μόχθο σου λόγω ανωτέρας βίας. Οι καιροί είναι πονηροί. Διαβάστε όμως αυτά που ακολουθούν, πιστεύουμε θα βγάλετε χρησιμότατα συμπεράσματα.

Κυρίως ήταν το έναυσμα για τη δημιουργία της κωμικής τρομοκρατίας, της χολυγουντιανής κάστας αν- ιδεολόγων, αν- εγκέφαλων παιδιών που θα ήταν τα τέλεια πιόνια για τους παρακρατικούς εγκεφάλους. Διαβάστε τη και σε λίγο η συνέχεια.

Η περσινή επιλογή του κ. Σημίτη και της ομάδας του υπήρξε έργο των Αμερικανών, της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και του ντόπιου μεγάλου κεφαλαίου. Μετά την αναγκαστική αποχώρηση του Α. Παπανδρέου ήταν γι’ αυτούς, το καλύτερο «προϊόν» στην αγορά, πράγμα που επιβεβαιώθηκε πανηγυρικά με τον τρόπο που ο νέος πρωθυπουργός χειρίστηκε την κρίση στα Ίμια.

Η κρίση στα Ίμια υπήρξε θρίαμβος της Τουρκίας και ατιμωτική πολιτικο-στρατιωτική ήττα της Ελλάδας. Στρατιωτική ήττα γιατί κατελήφθη ελληνικό έδαφος τη στιγμή που είχαν κινητοποιηθεί οι Ένοπλες Δυνάμεις για να το προφυλάξουν. Κατάληψη που δεν έγινε σε κάποια απομακρυσμένη βραχονησίδα από τις εκατοντάδες του Αιγαίου, όπως ειπώθηκε, αλλά σε μια από τις δύο που αμφισβητούσαν ρητά οι Τούρκοι εκείνη τη στιγμή. Ατιμωτική για μας, θρίαμβος για την Τουρκία γιατί η κατάληψη έγινε χωρίς να πέσει ούτε μια ντουφέκια και χωρίς να κάνουμε την παραμικρή προσπάθεια ανακατάληψης.

Πολιτική ήττα, γιατί η Τουρκία πέτυχε απόλυτα τον πολιτικό της στόχο, που δεν ήταν η κατάληψη και κατοχή ελληνικού εδάφους. Αλλά η αμφισβήτηση της κυριαρχίας της Ελλάδας στις ελληνικές βραχονησίδες, στέλνοντας το μήνυμα στη διεθνή κοινότητα με την κατάληψη στα Ίμια, ότι η Ελλάδα είναι ανίκανη να την υπερασπίσει, να ασκήσει την κυριαρχία της σ’ αυτές ακόμη κι όταν έχει κινητοποιήσει ολόκληρο το στόλο της προς τούτο.

Εξαναγκάζοντας το Σημίτη να αποδεχτεί συμφωνία, υπό τις πιέσεις των Αμερικανών για ν’ αποτραπεί δήθεν ο πόλεμος, με την οποία τα Ίμια γίνονται «γκρίζα» αφού δεν μπορεί πλέον να πάει εκεί Έλληνας όπως γίνονταν στο παρελθόν, παρά μόνο αν ειδοποιηθεί και συναινέσει η Τουρκία. Και δεύτερον αποδεχόμενος έναρξη διαπραγματεύσεων με την Τουρκία εφόλης της ύλης: Αιγαίο, υφαλοκρηπίδα, Ίμια-βραχονησίδες, εναέριος χώρος, Κυπριακό. Όλες οι μετέπειτα απεγνωσμένες προσπάθειες της κυβέρνησης Ση-μιτη που διαρκούν μέχρι σήμερα αποσκοπούν στο να κερδίσει χρόνο ώστε να παρουσιάσει στον ελληνικό λαό αυτές τις διαπραγματεύσεις-αποτέλεσμα του Βατερλώ στα Ίμια σαν δήθεν προϊόν ελεύθερης βούλησης και καλόπιστο «βήμα προς βήμα» διάλογο. Είναι άλλωστε χαρακτηριστικό ότι το περσινό παραμύθι ότι με τη συμφωνία αποφεύχθηκε ο πόλεμος, αντικατέστησε νέο παραμύθι σύμφωνα με το οποίο κερδίσαμε γιατί αποφύγαμε τις διαπραγματεύσεις.

Η επιτυχής όμως έκβαση για τους Αμερικανούς προϋπέθετε την παραμονή στην εξουσία και άρα την προηγούμενη εκλογική νίκη του ανθρώπου που «υπέγραψε» τη νύχτα των Ίμια, αφού υπογραφή συμφωνιών με την Τουρκία πριν τις εκλογές αποκλείονταν λόγω της αντιαμερικανικής κατακραυγής ενώ θα οδηγούσε σε πολιτική καταβαράθρωση. Έτσι δημιουργήθηκε μια πρωτότυπη ασυλία για τον κύριο υπεύθυνο τον πρωθυπουργό — που διαρκεί μέχρι σήμερα και θα διαρκεί μέχρι να υπογραφούν οι συμφωνίες με την Τουρκία— που ξεπερνάει τα όρια του τραγελαφικού.

Λοιδωρούνται υπουργοί και στρατιωτικοί για πράξεις ή παραλήψεις στα Ίμια για τις οποίες την κύρια ευθύνη φέρει ο πρωθυπουργός, ενώ παράλληλα εκθειάζονται οι σοφοί χειρισμοί του που οδήγησαν σ’ αυτές τις πράξεις ή παραλείψεις!!! Έτσι η πανωλεθρία στα Ίμια μετατράπηκε από τα ελεγχόμενα ΜΜΕ αν όχι σε νίκη, τουλάχιστον σε αξιοπρεπή ισοπαλία μέσα από συστηματική απόκρυψη και παραποίηση των γεγονότων και την παράλληλη κατασυκοφάντηση σαν πολεμοκάπηλων, υπερπατριωτών, εθνικιστών κλπ. όσων αρνούνται να αποδεχτούν τη χοντροκομμένη κυβερνητική προπαγάνδα.

Η αλήθεια για τα Ίμια και τις συνέπειες τους απεκρύβη από τον ελληνικό λαό με την καθημερινή πλύση εγκεφάλου των ΜΜΕ. Αποκαλυπτικό παράδειγμα της είναι η περίπτωση της «πτώσης» του ελληνικού ελικοπτέρου. Μίλησαν για άγνωστη αιτία που προκάλεσε μηχανική βλάβη στο ελικόπτερο αποκρύβοντας το γεγονός ότι αν αυτό είναι αλήθεια —ότι δηλαδή δεν χτυπήθηκε από κάποιο όπλο— αυτό από μόνο του φωτογραφίζει σαν δράστες τους Αμερικάνους. Γιατί είναι οι μόνοι εκτός της Ελλάδας και της Τουρκίας που είχαν συγκεντρώσει στρατιωτικές δυνάμεις στην περιοχή, οι μόνοι που παρακολουθούσαν ηλεκτρονικά με δορυφόρους, ραντάρ, AWAKS κάθε στρατιωτική κίνηση και οι μόνοι που διαθέτουν το οπλικό σύστημα το κατάλληλο να καταρρίψει αεροπλάνο εξ αποστάσεως, προκαλώντας βλάβη στον κινητήρα και χωρίς να το πλήξουν απευθείας.

Θ’ ανοίξουμε εδώ μια αναγκαία μικρή παρένθεση. Πρόσφατα ένας πρώην πράκτορας της KGB ονόματι Φεκλίσωφ, όντας ο μόνος ακόμη εν ζωή πρώην πράκτορας που γνωρίζει από πρώτο χέρι την περίπτωση των Ρόζενμπεργκ, αφού ήταν η επαφή του στις ΗΠΑ, θέλησε ν’ αποκαλύψει την αλήθεια, πούναι διαφορετική κι απ’ την εκδοχή των ΗΠΑ κι απ’ αυτήν της πρώην ΕΣΣΔ. Σύμφωνα με τον Φεκλίσωφ, ο Ρόζενμπεργκ ήταν ήρωας που πίστευε στη σοσιαλιστική φύση της ΕΣΣΔ και ήταν πρόθυμος να θυσιάσει και τη ζωή του γι’ αυτήν, έδωσε πλήθος πληροφορίες ηλεκτρονικής φύσης όχι όμως για την ατομική βόμβα, ενώ η γυναίκα του ήταν άσχετη κι αθώα. Σύμφωνα λοιπόν με τον Φεκλίσωφ ο Ρόζενμπεργκ έδωσε στην KGB τη σημαντικότερη πληροφορία του το Δεκέμβρη του 44 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Έφερε για χριστουγενιάτικο δώρο στον Κόκκινο στρατό ένα κουτί που ζύγιζε περίπου 9 κιλά. Ήταν ένα υπεραπόρρητο όπλο του αμερικανικού στρατού το οποίο μπορούσε να καταρρίψει αεροπλάνο της εποχής εξ αποστάσεως προκαλώντας μηχανική βλάβη στον κινητήρα χωρίς να το χτυπήσει απευθείας.

Δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία ότι 50 χρόνια μετά, το αμερικάνικο αυτό όπλο θάχει τελειοποιηθεί, θάναι πάντα απόρρητο, δεν θα δίνεται σε συμμάχους και θα χρησιμοποιείται μόνο σε ειδικές περιπτώσεις. Αποκλείεται λοιπόν να το διαθέτει ο τούρκικος στρατός.

Στο πάρα πάνω λοιπόν απόρρητο αμερικάνικο οπλικό σύστημα, το οποίο ασφαλώς θα γνώριζαν οι ειδικευμένοι και μη δημοσιογράφοι δεν αναφέρθηκε ούτε ένας τους. Μήπως γιατί ο κόσμος θα το συνέδεε ανενδοίαστα με την πτώση του ελικοπτέρου;

Η κατάρριψη του ελληνικού ελικόπτερου τη συγκεκριμένη στιγμή είχε ένα και μόνο σκοπό. Ν’ αποτραπεί πάσει θυσία ανακατάληψη των Ίμια από τις ελληνικές δυνάμεις και να τραβήξει το χαλί κάτω απ’ τα πόδια όσων ζητούσαν κάτι τέτιο. Η ανακατάληψη των Ίμια που θα μπορούσε να πραγματοποιηθεί αρκετά εύκολα, θα σήμαινε καταστροφή για τους εμπνευστές της επιχείρησης Ιμια, την πλήρη αποτυχία της. Γιατί δεν θ’ αφαιρούσε απλά τον κυριότερο μοχλό πίεσης κατά της ελληνικής κυβέρνησης αλλά γιατί θα κατέρρεε παταγωδώς ο περιβόητος εκβιασμός-απειλή πολέμου μέσω του οποίου εξαναγκάστηκε τελικά σε υπόγραφή συμφωνίας η ελληνική κυβέρνηση. Για τους ουμανιστές πλανητάρχες η ζωή των τριών Ελλήνων φαντάρων δεν λογαριάζεται μπροστά στις αδήριτες αναγκαιότητες της νέας τάξης πραγμάτων στο Αιγαίο.

Η σημερινή λοιπόν ασυλία και το απυρόβλητο του Σημίτη δεν έχει να κάνει ούτε με το έργο του ή τις ικανότητες του, ούτε με το Μάαστριχτ αφού εκτός του ΚΚΕ δεν υπάρχει σήμερα κοινοβουλευτικός πολιτικός που ν’ αμφισβητεί ουσιαστικά το «μονόδρομο του Μάαστριχτ». Κι όσο κι αν φαίνεται περίεργο η στάση του στους πρόσφατους μεγάλους κοινωνικούς αγώνες δεν είναι άσχετη με τα Ίμια. Η στάση πλήρους αδιαφορίας που επέδειξε βρίσκεται σε αντίθεση με τις υποχωρήσεις και τους συμβιβασμούς που αποδέχτηκαν πανίσχυρες κυβερνήσεις μεγάλων δυτικοευρωπαϊκών χωρών με πολύ πιο ανίσχυρους απεργούς και προέρχεται από τη βεβαιότητα πως ό,τι και αν γίνονταν θα παρέμενε άφθαρτος. Έχοντας βγει αλώβητος και θριαμβευτής από την πανωλεθρία στα Ίμια, τα κοινωνικά μέτωπα φάνταζαν παιχνιδάκια μπροστά τους. Παρέμεινε λοιπόν απόμακρος παρατηρητής γνωρίζοντας ότι με οποιαδήποτε έκβαση θάταν ο σίγουρος νικητής. Γιατί μέχρι νάρθει η ώρα, πρέπει να τον κρατήσουν ακηλίδωτο.

Περιττό να προσθέσουμε ότι σ’ αυτήν την προπαγανδιστική εκστρατεία κύριο ρόλο έπαιζε και πάλι το γνωστό συγκρότημα, το οποίο άλλωστε ανταμείφθηκε με τον γνωστό προκλητικό διορισμό του λαμπρού «δημοσιογράφου» διευθυντή του.

Αν στην προηγούμενη δεκαετία μπορεί να υπήρχαν μέσα στο ΠΑΣΟΚ και ορισμένοι που πίστευαν ειλικρινά τη σοσιαλιστική ρητορεία του, σήμερα δεν υπάρχει κανείς. Έχοντας υιοθετήσει τυφλά την πολιτική πρακτική της νεοφιλελεύθερης δεξιάς, το νέο δογματισμό της μοναδιαίας σκέψης με καθυστέρηση δεκαετίας και σε μια εποχή που στη Δύση, τα αποτελέσματα της αρχίζουν ν αμφισβητούνται ακόμη κι απ’ τους πρώτους θιασώτες της, δεν έχει να πει τίποτε, δεν έχει αυτόνομο πολιτικό λόγο, πρόγραμμα, ούτε καν στόχους. Όσο ψευδώνυμος ήταν ο σοσιαλισμός του 80 άλλο τόσο είναι ο σημερινός εκσυγχρονισμός, στο κοινωνικό η πατριωτικό του πρόσωπο. Το ΠΑΣΟΚ —με την ευρεία έννοια που περιλαμβάνει και τα ανώτερα κυβερνητικά στελέχη που μπορεί να μην είναι μέλη — έχει μεταβληθεί σήμερα σε ένα χώρο, όπου άτομα και ομάδες ανταγωνίζονται με στόχο την καταλεηλάτηση των διάφορων κοινοτικών κονδυλίων. Αν πέτυχε μια κοινωνικοποίηση αυτή είναι της ρεμούλας. Τον Κοσκωτά έχουν σήμερα διαδεχθεί εκατοντάδες μικρότεροι.

Από το Διδυμότειχο και το Άγιο Όρος μέχρι τη Γαύδο, κυβερνητικά στελέχη, κομματικοί τοπικοί παράγοντες, μεσαία στελέχη της Διοίκησης, μηχανικοί, εργολάβοι, τεχνικές εταιρείες, στελέχη της αυτοδιοίκησης κλπ. εκπονούν «έργα» χωρίς κανένα πρόγραμμα, χωρίς ιεράρχηση αναγκών, ενίοτε τελείως άχρηστα, κατασπαταλώντας τα διάφορα πακέτα Ντελόρ, με μοναδικό στόχο τις διάφορες μίζες. Στον ενδοκομματικό αυτό πόλεμο αλλά και τη συναλλαγή μετέρχονται οποιοδήποτε μέσο, παραβιάζοντας ανοιχτά κανόνες και νόμους που οι ίδιοι θέσπισαν αφού γνωρίζουν ότι έχουν εξασφαλισμένη ατιμωρησία με την κάλυψη της Κυβέρνησης και την ανυπαρξία της Δικαιοσύνης. Ο πολυδιαφημιζόμενος λοιπόν εκσυγχρονισμός είναι αδύνατος αφού θα σήμαινε ανοιχτή σύγκρουση του Σημίτη και της ομάδας του με τον πάρα πάνω κομματικό μηχανισμό που τον στηρίζει κι απ’ τον οποίο εξαρτάται όπως τόδειξε το πρόσφατο παράδειγμα του καζίνου του Φλοίσβου. Μπροστά στο καραμπινάτο σκάνδαλο οι βουλευτές του ΠΑΣΟΚ της κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής δεν τόλμησαν να παραπέμψουν το Λίβανο και τη Στάη γιατί όπως είπαν, η παραπομπή τους θα παρέσυρε και το Λαλιώτη.

Προς την ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ

Σας στέλνουμε την τελευταία παράγραφο της χθεσινής, μας προκήρυξης η οποία παραλήφθηκε εκ παραδρομής.

Υ.Γ. 2. Εμείς βέβαια εκτοξεύσαμε τη ρουκέτα ενάντια στην Αμερικάνικη Πρεσβεία στις 15 Φλεβάρη του 1996.

Οι λόγοι αυτής της ενέργειας ήταν τόσο φανεροί και κατανοητοί που γι’ αυτό δεν στείλαμε προκήρυξη.

Τα χάχανα, η γενική θυμηδία και το κράξιμο που προκάλεσαν αυθόρμητα και σ’ αυτούς ακόμη τους βουλευτές, οι δημόσιες ευχαριστίες του πρωθυπουργού Σημίτη προς τους Αμερικάνους ήταν αρκούντως εύγλωττα.

**“Υπάρχουν τουλάχιστον οκτώ άτομα που ήταν μέλη της «17Ν», που δεν ξέρουμε ποιοι είναι και δεν δικάστηκαν ποτέ. Τουλάχιστον!”
Υπάρχουν στοιχεία που μπορεί να αθωώσουν κατηγορουμένους. Οι Άγγλοι επέμεναν να “οριστεί’ ως “αρχηγός” ο Αλέξανδρος Γιωτόπουλος. Οι δικαστές δεν ασχολήθηκαν με τα οικονομικά τετράδια της οργάνωσης επειδή “οι ανακριτικές αρχές προτιμούσαν να μην μπερδέψουν τον εισαγγελέα με λεπτομέρειες που δεν ταιριάζουν πολύ με τις ομολογίες!”. Ο Γαβράς, ο Λαμπράκης και μία εκπομπή της ΕΤ3

Η σημαντικότερη στιγμή του «Ζ»: το κτύπημα έχει ήδη δοθεί στον «Ζήτα» - Λαμπράκη. Το θέμα είναι ποιος τον σκότωσε στην πραγματικότητα.

Λαμπράκης: ένας ιδεαλιστής αστός που έπεσε θύμα του κόμματός του;

Βόλευε ο θάνατος του Παναγούλη, όπως και η δολοφονία του Λαμπράκη, την πολιτική άνοδο του Ανδρέα;

Επανεκδόθηκε στις 2 Απριλίου το περίφημο «Ζ» του Κώστα Γαβρά με τον Υβ Μοντάν στον ρόλο του Λαμπράκη και τον Ζαν Λουΐ Τρεντινιάν στον ρόλο του ανακριτή Χρήστου Σαρτζετάκη. Μια ταινία που έκανε διάσημο τον Γαβρά και που κέρδισε το Όσκαρ Καλύτερης Ξένης Ταινίας το 1969.

Η υπόθεση της ταινίας είναι λίγο-πολύ γνωστή. Ένας αριστερός βουλευτής στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ‘60 πέφτει θύμα ενός «τραμπουκικού» κτυπήματος στην διάρκεια μιας πορείας για την Ύφεση και τον Αφοπλισμό. Θα επιζήσει του κτυπήματος, αλλά θα υποκύψει λίγο μετά. Η κυβέρνηση θα αναθέσει σε έναν ανακριτή την υπόθεση για να την κουκουλώσει. Εκείνος όμως πληροφορημένος από έναν αριστερό δημοσιογράφο θα αρνηθεί και οι έρευνες που θα διεξάγει θα τον οδηγήσουν στο να θεωρήσει ως ενόχους το παρακράτος και το Παλάτι, που παρουσιάζονται ως πρόδρομοι της στρατιωτικής δικτατορίας.

Η ταινία χρησιμοποιεί το όνομα «Ζήτα» (Υβ Μοντάν) για τον ήρωα της και δεν αναφέρει καθόλου το όνομα της Μεσογειακής χώρας, όπου διεξάγεται η ιστορία. Υποτίθεται ότι γυρίζεται στην Αλγερία, αλλά μία ελληνική γραφομηχανή και η μουσική του Θεοδωράκη με το σαντούρι να κυριαρχεί σε κάνει να καταλάβεις ότι πρόκειται για την Ελλάδα των αρχών του ’60 παραπέμποντας στην δολοφονία του Γρηγόρη Λαμπράκη. Εξάλλου όπως αναφέρεται στην αρχή: «Η τυχόν ομοιότητα με πρόσωπα, ζώντα και αποθανόντα δεν είναι συμπτωματική, είναι ηθελημένη».

Αν θέλουμε να είμαστε αντικειμενικοί, πρέπει να παραδεχθούμε ότι η ταινία διατηρεί την φρεσκάδα και την ένταση της. Αυτό οφείλεται στην κλασσική δομή της, σε αντίθεση με άλλες ταινίες της εποχής, όπως αυτές της «Νουβέλ Βανγκ» (Γκοντάρ) η των πειραματισμών του ’60, που σήμερα δεν βλέπονται. Πειραματισμοί που όπως έχει δηλώσει ο ίδιος ο Γαβράς γινόταν από αριστερούς γόνους της μεγαλοαστικής τάξης (Γκοντάρ, Βισκόντι) που περιφρονούσαν το κοινό, και κατά συνέπεια τον ίδιο τον λαό. Αυτό σε αντίθεση με τον περήφανο για την αγροτική του καταγωγή Κώστα Γαβρά. Εδώ πρέπει να πούμε ότι ο Γαβράς τότε δέχθηκε επίθεση για την κλασσική «μπουρζουάδικη» γραφή του. Μια γραφή που συνδυάζει γουέστερν
(ειδικά στο «Το Τραίνο θα Κτυπήσει Τρεις Φορές») και αστυνομικά θρίλερ με ταινίες του τύπου «Blow Up» του Αντονιόνι. Επίσης να πούμε ότι το «Ζ», όχι μόνο άνοιξε τον δρόμο για τα επόμενα πολιτικά θρίλερ του Γαβρά («Κατάσταση Πολιορκίας», «Ο Αγνοούμενος»), αλλά έχει επηρεάσει και τις πολιτικές ταινίες σκηνοθετών, όπως ο Σίντνεϋ Λιούμετ, ο Άλαν Πάκουλα και ο Όλιβερ Στόουν. Για παράδειγμα η τελική σκηνή με τις γραφομηχανές έχει αντιγραφεί από τον Άλαν Πάκουλα στο «Όλοι οι Άνθρωποι του Προέδρου» για το Ουώτεργκεϊτ. Ενώ οι ερμηνείες των Υβ Μοντάν και Ζαν Λουϊ Τρεντινιάν (Βραβείο Καλύτερου Ηθοποιού στο Φεστιβάλ Καννών)είναι υψηλού επιπέδου. Αλλά...

Υπάρχει ένα «αλλά», που είναι μια εκπομπή της ΕΤ3 το 2003. Σε αυτήν ο Μανώλης Χατζηαποστόλου, ο διάσημος «Τίγρης» που συνέλαβε τους Γκοτζαμάνη και Εμμανουηλίδη, δήλωνε ότι κάτι μεσολάβησε ανάμεσα στο κτύπημα με το τρίκυκλο και τον θάνατο του στον Ερυθρό Σταυρό κατηγορώντας σαφώς την Αριστερά: «Μέσα στο αμάξι τον αποτελειώσανε ή με καουτσούκ ή με άμμο. Επαγγελματικά στελέχη. Ο Βέρρος (μετέπειτα βουλευτής του ΚΚΕ) και άλλος ένας». Ενώ δήλωνε ότι το αρχικό κτύπημα του Εμμανουηλίδη δεν ήταν θανατηφόρο. Μάλιστα τόσο φοβόταν την Αριστερά που ζήτησε από την δημοσιογράφο να βγάλει την συνέντευξη στον αέρα μόνο μετά τον θάνατο του.

Της ίδιας άποψης ήταν και ο καθηγητής Οικονόμου που έκανε την αυτοψία. Για αυτόν το κτύπημα που είχε οριζόντια φορά δεν θα μπορούσε ποτέ να είχε μεγάλη δύναμη και χρειαζόταν μεγάλη φόρα, πράγμα που δεν μπορούσε να συμβαίνει μιας και το κτύπημα ήταν από πίσω. Για να επιτευχθεί το σπάσιμο του κρανίου του θα έπρεπε να συνδυαστεί η μεγάλη φόρα και η ένταση του κτυπήματος, πράγμα που δεν θα μπορούσε να συμβεί. Ενώ στην ίδια εκπομπή, ο γιος του Γρηγόριου Λαμπράκη δήλωνε ότι όταν συνάντησε στην Θάσο τον Χρήστο Σαρτζετακη μετά το τέλος της προεδρικής θητείας του το 1988, και του είπε ποιος είναι, εκείνος του είπε: «Δεν είναι τώρα η ώρα για να αποκαλύψουμε ποιος σκότωσε τον Λαμπράκη».

Τέλος σύμφωνα με τον δημοσιογράφο Κυριάκο Ζαφειρίου στο βιβλίο του «Αντίστροφη Μέτρηση: σχέδιο δολοφονίας του Γρηγόρη Λαμπράκη» οι δημοσιογράφοι της εποχής Γιώργος Ρωμαίος του «Βήματος», Γιώργος Βούλτεψης της «Αυγής» και Γιώργος Μπέρτσος της «Ελευθερίας» που ασχολήθηκαν με την υπόθεση, δήλωσαν εκ των υστέρων ότι ούτε ο Καραμανλής, ούτε και η Φρειδερίκη και το Παλάτι είχαν σχέση με την δολοφονία του Λαμπράκη. Φυσικά αυτό έγινε κατόπιν εορτής, αφού πρώτα συνέβαλλαν με τα κείμενα τους στην λιβελλοποίηση του Θρόνου και της Δεξιάς. Στο ίδιο βιβλίο ο Ζαφειρίου αποδεικνύει ότι η υπόθεση Λαμπράκη ήταν στημένη από το εξωτερικό, αφήνοντας παράλληλα αιχμές για τον Χρήστο Σαρτζετάκη.

Τι σχέση έχει το «Ζ» με αυτές τις αλήθειες; Καμία. Όμως όποια και αν είναι η άποψη του καθενός για το «Ζ», θα πρέπει να το δει μέσα στην γενικότερη φιλμογραφία του Γαβρά. Ένα καλλιτεχνικό έργο, όπου κτυπά τον ολοκληρωτισμό σε όποια πλευρά και αν ανήκει. Μην ξεχνάμε ότι ο Γαβράς έκανε αργότερα και την «Ομολογία» για τον ολοκληρωτισμό και τις στημένες δίκες του κομμουνισμού. Μία ταινία που του στοίχησε την περιθωριοποίηση από την Αριστερή ιντελλιγκέντζια της εποχής. Ενώ στην «Κατάσταση Πολιορκίας» δεν χαρίζεται ούτε στους Τουπαμάρος που απαγάγουν έναν άνθρωπο των Αμερικάνικων Μυστικών Υπηρεσιών (που τον παίζει ο Υβ Μοντάν).

Σε αυτά, εμείς να προσθέσουμε ότι ο Γρηγόρης Λαμπράκης, αστός ιδεαλιστής της «Αριστεράς του Κολωνακίου», όπως τον έχει αποκαλέσει ο καθηγητής Δημήτρης Κιτσίκης, έκανε δέκα μέρες πριν την δολοφονία του, αίτηση για να γίνει μέλος της «Ένωσης Κέντρου». Αυτό σημαίνει ότι με την συμμετοχή του Λαμπράκη, η άνοδος του Ανδρέα Παπανδρέου μέσα στο κόμμα θα ήταν δύσκολη. Και ω του θαύματος! Ο Λαμπράκης έπαψε να είναι εμπόδιο στην άνοδο του εκλεκτού των Αμερικανών, Ανδρέα. Όπως έγινε μεταπολιτευτικά και με τον Αλέκο Παναγούλη, που αν ζούσε σίγουρα θα τραβούσε πολύ νεολαία από το ΠΑΣΟΚ στην «Ένωση Κέντρου – Νέες Δυνάμεις».

Μετά από όλα αυτά μήπως είναι καιρός για μια αντικειμενική αναψηλάφηση της δίκης;

Τα πρώτα κελαηδίσματα καλημερίζουν την αυγή και ο αγέρας καθαρός και φρεσκοπλυμένος μπαίνει απ’ τα ανοιχτό παράθυρο. Η αράχνη που όλο το βράδυ έμενε ακίνητη απάνω στον ιστό της αρχίζει να σαλεύει σιγά-σιγά. Είναι πάνω και έξω απ’ το παράθυρό μου, σαν απειλή στέκεται εκεί μέρα και νύχτα μέχρι να πάρω την απόφαση να της δώσω μια και να την ξαποστείλω. Όμως την απόφαση δεν την έχω λάβει ακόμα. Α, όλα και όλα έχω δώσει όρκο. Όρκο βαρύ ότι δεν θα αφαιρέσω ζωή παρά μόνο ότι απειλήσει τον ζωτικό μου χώρο. Και η αράχνη βρίσκεται στα όριά μου. Ένα βήμα παραμέσα και θα πάψει να υπάρχει. Λέτε να το γνωρίζει; Πριν να κοιμηθώ καμιά φορά φαντάζομαι την αράχνη να τρυπώνει στα κρυφά και να έρχεται ακριβώς από πάνω μου. Και μόλις με παίρνει ο ύπνος να δίνει μία και να εναποθέτει τα αυγά της μέσα στο αυτί μου. Την επομένη να ξυπνώ δίχως να γνωρίζω και να καταλαβαίνω το παραμικρό. Έτσι και οι δυο συνωμοτούμε μέρα με τη μέρα. Ένα βήμα δικό της… ένα βλέφαρο κλειστό δικό μου, και…! Άραγε οι αράχνες βλέπουν όνειρα;
Στο ραδιόφωνο ακούω την Κάστα Ντίβα. Εξαίσια φωνή. Είναι η ώρα τέτοια που ταιριάζει με τη μουσική. Πέντε παρά και η Κάλλας αντηχεί. Πού αντηχεί; Εδώ στο μικρό δωμάτιο, σ’ ένα χωριό της Αγγλίας… μόνος με την αράχνη μου. Λίγο προτού να κοιμηθώ. Και θα αναρωτιέστε ίσως τι με κρατάει ξύπνιο τέτοια ώρα ή που βρίσκω την όρεξη για κλασσική μουσική. Και δεν έχετε άδικο. Έχω να γράψω, εργασία τη λένε εδώ, για τον ωφελιμισμό. Καταλάβατε; Δεν κάνω καλύτερα που γράφω σε εσάς τους πολλούς ή τους λίγους για τη μικρή μου αράχνη; Ας αφήσω όμως την αράχνη και ας περάσουμε μαζί στην επόμενη σκέψη μου. Έχω βάλει στοίχημα με τον εαυτό μου ότι μπορώ να γράψω βρε αδερφέ τρεις αράδες που θα έχουν μεγαλύτερο ενδιαφέρον απ’ την εργασία μου για τον ωφελιμισμό του Μιλ. Προσφάτως διάβασα το φύλακα της σίκαλης του Σάλιντζερ, μιας και πέθανε πρόσφατα. Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στα μαθητικά χρόνια, τα δικά του; διόλου απίθανο. Μου έκανε εντύπωση ο θόρυβος γύρω από το βιβλίο και το όνομά του. Το ίδιο το βιβλίο με άφησε αδιάφορο. Έζησε απομονωμένος και ξεκομμένος από τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας. Κανείς δεν γνώριζε που ζούσε και έτσι το μυστήριο της ζωής του μεγάλωσε την υστεροφημία του. Ας μην τον αδικήσω όμως. Το βιβλίο του αρέσει. Τώρα διαβάζω Κροπότκιν. Περίεργο όνομα. Μέχρι να το διαβάσω σωστά το όνομά του μου πήρε χρόνο. Μιλά για επαναστάσεις και αναρχία. Είμαι στο κεφάλαιο ‘Η απαλλοτρίωση’. Επίκαιρο; Και εάν είναι σάμπως θα το διαβάσουμε;

ΑΠΟΣΠΑΣΜΑΤΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΙΣ ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΕΣ
Σε λίγες μέρες συμπληρώνεται ένας χρόνος από τότε που σας δόθηκα χωρίς καμιά επιφύλαξη∙ το πάθος σας μου φαινόταν τόσο φλογερό και τόσο ειλικρινές, που ποτέ δεν θα φανταζόμουν πως η εύνοια που σας έδειξα θα σας απωθούσε σε σημείο ώστε ν' αναγκαστείτε να διανύσετε πεντακόσιες λεύγες, να εκτεθείτε σε κινδύνους και ναυάγια, για να γλιτώσετε απ' αυτήν: κανείς δεν μου χρωστούσε παρόμοια συμπεριφορά.
Θέλω όλος ο κόσμος να το μάθει, δεν το κρατάω μυστικό, και είμαι πολύ χαρούμενη που έκανα ό,τι έκανα για σας, αψηφώντας κάθε είδους ευπρέπεια∙ στο έξης η τιμή και η θρησκεία μου θα υπάρχουν μόνο για να υπηρετούν τον τρελό μου έρωτα, αφ' ης στιγμής σας αγάπησα.
Πώς είναι δυνατόν με τόση αγάπη να μην μπορέσω να σας κάνω απόλυτα ευτυχισμένο; Λυπάμαι στο όνομα αυτής μου της αγάπης για όλες τις εξαίσιες ηδονές που χάσατε: είναι δυνατόν να μη θελήσατε ποτέ να τις απολαύσετε;
Πόσο πιο ευτυχισμένος είναι κανείς και πόσο πιο βαθύ είναι αυτό που νιώθει όταν αγαπά αληθινά παρά όταν αγαπιέται. Δεν ξέρω ποιά είμαι, τί κάνω, τί θέλω: χίλια δυο αντίθετα συναισθήματα με συντρίβουν.
Εχω απόλυτη επίγνωση ότι η αγάπη μου για σας αγγίζει τα όρια της τρέλας∙ όμως διόλου δεν παραπονιέμαι για τα βίαια συναισθήματά μου έχω συνηθίσει τον κατατρεγμό τους και δεν θα μπορούσα να έξακολουθήσω να ζω δίχως αυτή τη χαρά που ανακαλύπτω και που απολαμβάνω, να σας αγαπώ μέσα σε τόσο πόνο.
Νιώθω τύψεις αν η κάθε στιγμή της ζωής μου δεν είναι αφιερωμένη σε σας∙ τί θα έκανα, αλίμονο, χωρίς το τόσο μίσος και τον τόσο έρωτα να γεμίζουν την καρδιά μου; Θα μπορούσα άραγε να έπιζήσω απ’ όλ’ αυτά που τώρα με απασχολούν για να περάσω μια ήσυχη κι ατάραχη ζωή; Αυτό το κενό κι αυτή η απάθεια δεν μπορεί να μου ταιριάζουν.
Μισώ την είλικρίνειά σας: σας ζήτησα εγώ ποτέ να μου γράφετε την ωμή αλήθεια; Γιατί δεν μ' αφήνατε στο πάθος μου; Δεν είχατε παρά να μη μου γράφετε∙ δεν γύρευα διευκρινίσεις.
Χρειάζεται τέχνη για να κάνεις τον άλλον να σ’ ερωτευτεί∙ μια κάποια επιτηδειότητα για να βρεις τρόπο να τον διεγείρεις, γιατί ο έρωτας από μόνος του δεν γεννάει έρωτα.

Σηκώνω το χέρι μου και πυρπολώ. Σπίτια καμμένα κατεστραμμένα, ανθρώπινα αποκαΐδια ανεμίζουν πάνω από την πόλη. Σκυλιά γαυγίζουν και δαγκώνουν το ένα το άλλο. Ανθρώπινα σώματα λιώνουν στους δρόμους και η μυρωδιά της καμμένης σάρκας γεμίζει κάθε ζωντανό ρουθούνι. Παιδιά κλαίνε και ψάχνουν απεγνωσμένα για βοήθεια. Γυναίκες ακρωτηριασμένες, γυναίκες μόνες αναμαλλιασμένες ψάχνουν στα συντρίμια την οικογένειά τους. Κλαίνε και φωνάζουν. Εκλιπαρούν το Θεό. Εγώ συνεχίζω να πυρπολώ ασταμάτητα για μέρες, βδομάδες, μήνες. Όλη η πόλη κατακαίγεται και καταστρέφεται. Εγώ συνεχίζω μέχρι να μη μείνει τίποτα όρθιο.
Η ανθρώπινη λαιμαργία καταβροχθίζει και ξεσκίζει τα πάντα. Η κοιλιά έχει πολλές δίπλες. Τα χέρια κρατούν μαχαιροπήρουνα και είναι πάντα έτοιμα να ξεκοκαλίσουν κάθε ανθρώπινη ψυχή και να την πετάξουν στο αδηφάγο στομάχι. Τα περιττώματα στοιβάζονται σε μια γωνιά και η μπόχα πνίγει το επόμενο μεγάλο φαγοπότι. Το μενού είναι ατελείωτο. Ιράκ, Αφγανιστάν, Γιουγκοσλαβία, Ανατολικό Τιμόρ, Κύπρος, Βιετνάμ, Καμπότζη, Αφρική, Αμερική, Ασία, Ευρώπη, Ωκεανία.
Πατρίδες θνητές, αξιοθρήνητες παμφάγες.
Όσα ελπίζω έχουν πεθάνει εδώ και καιρό. Όσα προσδοκώ μοιάζουν με όνειρο. Τι μου απομένει; Μια ευκαιρία!

Προετοιμαζόμουν εδώ και μερικά χρόνια για τη Μεγάλη Έξοδο, την ηρωική. Αφού τελείωσα το στρατό πήρα τη μοναδική απόφαση, τη γενναία. Να σπάσω τον αποκλεισμό και να πέσω με όλη μου την ορμή πάνω στη βάρβαρη και άπιστη γνώση. Μία ηλεκτρονική αίτηση, ένα αεροπορικό εισιτήριο, μερικές χιλιάδες ευρώ και φουλ τα γκάζια για Αγγλία. Το πανεπιστήμιο από τα καλά, απ’ εκείνα που έχουν κάνει τις σπουδές επιστήμη. Μαθήματα μετρημένα στα δάχτυλα, διδασκαλία μεθοδική, υλικές παροχές πλούσιες, αποτέλεσμα προκαθορισμένο. Πτυχίο στο συρτάρι, βαθμός ηρωικός, θάνατος βέβαιος. Επιστροφή στην Αθήνα. Νεκρός, με τη σημαία του ηρωικού μας Έθνους πάνω στο άδειο φέρετρό μου. Δουλειά στο Φανάρι της πληρωμένης γνώσης. Εξυπηρετώ καθημερινά καμιά εκατοστή πελάτες στο επίκεντρο των άναρχων ξεσπασμάτων. Ξεφυλλίζω σελίδες βιβλίων, μετράω νούμερα και παρατηρώ γύρω μου με τρόμο τις σκιές που καμιά φορά τυχαίνουν να περάσουν από δίπλα μου. Μαύρες ως είναι έχουν μια καταπονημένη, μεταλλική ελευθερία κρεμασμένη με θράσος στο πέτο της βρωμιάς τους. Όχι, αρνούμαι να πληρώσω το θάνατό τους. Τους ορίζω ως ήρωες συμμαχητές μου και γι’ αυτό δεν τους μιλώ παρά μονάχα τους υμνώ.
Κάθε ημέρα παίρνω τον ίδιο δρόμο, το ίδιο τρένο, κατεβαίνω στην ίδια στάση, περπατώ στο ίδιο πεζοδρόμιο, συναντώ τους ίδιους ανθρώπους, πληρώνομαι τα ίδια χρήματα. Μηχανικά και προκαθορισμένα ζω το θάνατό μου. Σάμπως και εάν έπαιρνα διαφορετικό δρόμο, άλλο τρένο, περπατούσα σε διαφορετικό πεζοδρόμιο, συναντούσα ξένους ανθρώπους και πληρωνόμουν σε διαφορετικό νόμισμα, δεν θα συναντούσα μηχανικά και προκαθορισμένα το θάνατό μου;
Κι έτσι μέσα σ’ αυτές τις σκέψεις παρατώ τη δουλειά μου και αρπάζω τις πρώτες θερμές αχτίνες του ήλιου και φεύγω με ελπίδα το πλοίο για το νησί των τουριστών κάθε φυλής και κάθε ευρώ. Φορώντας ένα λευκό πουκάμισο αντί για χαμόγελο βρίσκομαι στο λιμάνι με τον πέτρινο μήλο. Εξυπηρετώ πλέον την αφρόκρεμα της ασημαντότητας, από κοιλαράδες με ρέψιμη φάτσα μέχρι αρλεκίνους Βασιλιάδων. Εκεί η αλήθεια είναι ότι δε βλέπω σκιές τόσο συχνά. Μονάχα που προσπαθώ κι εγώ να συντονιστώ μ’ αυτήν την ευφορία κι έτσι χαμογελώ με κάθε ευκαιρία. Καλημέρα, χαμογελώ. Καλησπέρα, χαμογελώ. Καληνύχτα, χαμογελώ. Ερώτηση, χαμογελώ. Άρνηση, χαμογελώ. Παρατήρηση, χαμογελώ. Ήταν οι πιο χαμογελαστές μου ημέρες.
Μέσα σ’ αυτήν την ευφορία ξαφνικά εμφανίζεται εμπρός μου μία μορφή σκιερή, αλλά η σκιά της δεν ήταν σαν τις άλλες. Αντί μαύρη ήταν χρυσή. Αντί να έχει στο πέτο της κρεμασμένη την ελευθερία, είχε κρεμάσει ένα τόξο κι ένα βέλος. Το κοιτούσα για πολλή ώρα. Επεξεργαζόμουν τις συμπτώσεις καθώς δεν ήταν η πρώτη φορά που τη συναντούσα. Όλα είχαν ξεκινήσει πολύ νωρίτερα. Αφορμή ήταν μία ιδέα που έγινε πράξη και που έμελλε να δημιουργήσει τις συνθήκες της συνάντησης. Το μόνο που χρειάστηκε για να δέσει η όλη εικόνα ανεξίτηλα στο μυαλό μου, πιστέψτε με, ήταν ένα τσιγάρο. Και δεύτερη συνάντηση υπήρξε, έτσι τυχαία όπως τυχαία γίνονται τα σημαντικότερα των πραγμάτων. Και τώρα ήταν η τρίτη μας συνάντηση. Λοιπόν σας διαβεβαιώνω ότι έκανα ότι περνούσε από την ψυχή μου ώστε ν’ αγνοήσω αυτήν τη χρυσή σκιά. Όμως καθώς περνούσαν οι μέρες άρχισα όλο και να δίνω μορφή στη χρυσή σκιά. Πρώτα-πρώτα έφερα όλο το χρυσάφι του κόσμου και μ' αυτό σχημάτισα τα χρυσά μαλλιά της. Κατόπιν έφερα χάμω στη γη τον ουρανό και με βία τον έβαλα όλον στα μάτια της. Έτσι να αντικρίζεις το απέραντο κατάματα. Καθώς συνέχισαν να περνούν οι μέρες η χρυσή σκιά είχε πάρει πλέον μορφή, μορφή άυλη. Ο έρωτας άρχισε να ξεριζώνει την ψυχή μου που ήθελε να πάει στη χρυσή σκιά και να της δώσει υπόσταση, να της δώσει ζωή. Δεν ξέρω τελικά αν τα κατάφερε… Χάθηκε έτσι ξαφνικά όπως εμφανίστηκε στην είσοδο της Βαβυλώνας. Δεν θέλησε το βέβαιο, δεν θέλησε και το αβέβαιο. Εικόνα ονειρική που σιγά-σιγά πλησιάζει το τέλος και ξυπνάς με ξεραμένο το στόμα και τα μάτια σα να κοιμόσουν για πολλές ώρες κι έτσι άκεφος γυρίζεις πλευρό και παίρνεις την απόφαση να σηκωθείς και να αδειάσεις όλες σου τις αναμνήσεις στη λεκάνη των ακαθαρσιών σου. Και εάν δεν ήταν ένα απλό νυχτερινό όνειρο αλλά μία ανάμνηση ζωντανή;   Και εάν δεν ήταν μία ανάμνηση αλλά ένα γράμμα που ποτέ δε διαβάστηκε απ’ τον παραλήπτη;

Λαμπερή στον κατάμαυρο ουρανό αστροβολάς. Γαντζώνεις και μπήγεις τα νύχια σου στο δέρμα της ψυχής μου. Ματώνω και ματώνω. Το αίμα μου επουλώνει τις πληγές σου. Συνεχίζουμε και οι δύο τραυματισμένοι. Εσύ για άλλους λόγους. Και οι δύο πληγωμένοι. Πιανόμαστε τώρα από σώματα άλλων, γαντζώνουμε τα νύχια μας σε άλλους. Σε πίστεψα τόσο βαθιά που σε πήρα μέσα μου μια για πάντα. Δίχως σε αδειανός. Δίχως σε για πάντα πληγωμένος. Πάρε με, πάρε με μαζί σου και γκρέμισέ με. Γκρέμισε καθετί ψεύτικο μέσα μου, άοπλος μπρος σου, γυμνός κατασπάραξέμε. Εχθροί ή εραστές; Εχθροί και Εραστές… Εχθροί σε καιρό ειρήνης και εραστές δίχως έρωτα. Αντί εγώ, εσύ! Κι εσύ απουσιάζεις. Κι εσύ αυτή, μιαν ανάμνηση, ένα γράμμα κλειστό!
