Lucky Charms

This week, we have a grouping of green garments for your bidding pleasure. These pieces are from various stores around the area. Green is an interesting color because you can really wear it in all four seasons. These particular items are mostly dark green so they are great for fall and even winter. Without further ado, here they are.

First is a very fashionable Guess Jeans green velvet blazer. Size Small/Petite, 32” bust, 30” waist. This velvet blazer is adorable! It is in like-new condition as well. It is lined with cream satin and has 2 fancy gold buttons. As I have mentioned before, velvet is a popular trend (check my post) right now. Get it here for a great price!

Hair Club for Men

Rihanna's not the only star with a stupid-looking 80’s-inspired hair style. There are plenty of professional basketball players who are trying to outdo her, or do something… not sure what they are doing, to be honest. Are they following a fashion trend, or starting one? Or are they trying to get pumped up to play with swagger? Either way, I probably wouldn't love basketball as much as I do without the hair fashion.

We all probably remember this crazy dude from the Bulls. He was great fun, especially paired with Madonna. And the late 1980’s/early 1990’s were a time for strange hair. But no one could outdo fair Dennis. (I’m not sure anyone wanted to, either.)

Right in line with the recent 80’s revival in fashion, 80’s hairstyles are getting some love, too, on the basketball court. We have the flat top, (Brandon Jennings), the rat tail (Deshawn’s rat tail), and the special shavings/carvings/messages. In fact, sometimes players carve things into their heads (team logo, etc.) to get pumped up for big games, like the playoffs. You could say that hairstyling is a pre-game ritual.

Here is Ron Artest playing for the Houston Rockets in the playoff series against the Lakers. He shaved the "Rockets R" into his head, and everyone thought he was crazy (not only because of his hair):

And this is Caron Butler of the Washington Wizards before Game 5 of the playoffs last year. He shaved his nickname "Tough Juice" into his head, maybe to remind him how tough he is?

Now we know why they call him “Boobie.”

And, as always, no discussion of NBA hair would be complete without some fluffy, puffy, big, beautiful afros. Thank Heavens for Ben Wallace. His game is as cuh-rayzee as his hair. A classic.

Oh, Andre. You look like Lady of Rage with the Afro Puffs! (I love that song...) Andre, that's just ugly!! And you don't look retro-1980's cool OR pumped up!!

Snap!! I almost forgot the Birdman (Chris Andersen of the Denver Nuggets) who rocks a retro punk rock Mohawk on the reg! And let me tell you, whenever he gets his hair ready for the game, he is also preparing his attitude. Whenever he enters a game, the crowd goes wild with cheers and bird calls. Does it help him play better? Who can really say, but it definitely gets the crowd pumped up, and that energy translates to the team. Andersen is the perfect example of hair fashion + basketball = pure energy.

Obama is a big basketball fan, too. I hope these fashion statements aren't giving him any ideas. Let’s just hope we NEVER, EVER see this:

Guest Blogger: A Rose by Any Other Size

So I was watching The Mo'Nique Show (I love me some Mo'Nique) during which Mo'Nique talked about her weight loss and had guests on like Star Jones who discussed losing weight and how it's time for the black community to get not skinny, but healthy. Now, all that's great, but I'm not here to talk about weight loss or health. Especially not since Star Jones had a lot of surgical help! Here's what really caught my attention.

About 5 minutes and 52 seconds into this episode right here, Mo'Nique joked that now she's "a 14, sometimes a 16 or an 18" and the audience -- mostly women -- burst into rioutous laughter. As did I. Because we all knew what she meant.

And that got me thinking. In my mind, she was not only referring to the sometimes not so subtle monthly variations in weight that women have, but a completely different size-mic shift.

I'm talking about clothing sizes. They drive me completely insane. Here's what I know so far. In an H&M I'm a GIANT, unless we're talking about sweaters and coats. I think I've figured it out -- the sweaters and coats seem to be made in Russia, where the women are strong so they can run the country while the men are at the local watering hole. And everything else is made in China, where the people are smaller. I haven't quite figured out sizing from Bangladesh, other than how bad it makes me feel to buy things made in Bangladesh since NPR said factory workers there get paid $23 a month. And no, it doesn't convert to "a lot" as one guy said on my Facebook page.

But many of the items from The Gap are also made in China, and when I shop at The Gap, I feel like a waif no bigger than Kate Moss! And never mind Old Navy! It seems that Old Navy sizes everything bigger.So not only do I get to save money, but I also get to wear size 8 jeans! I kinda love it even though I know it's a lie. Geez, over there I've gotten sweaters size SMALL. And I wear 36DDD minimizers. (Don't even get me started on the Büstenhalters! Germans have the best words for breast-related items.)

Sizing is no laughing matter. A much maligned New York Times Critical Shopper column discussing the HUGEness of a JCPenney Medium tshirt was so adamantly accused of classism by readers that the editor apologized! His apology is titled "The Insult Was Extra Large."

Now, don't think this sizing dilemma applies to women of all shapes. I've spent hours shopping with my cousin Xenia who is the exact physical and mental opposite of me.

In fact, we look like Abbott and Costello when we shop at places like Rugged WearHouse in Gaithersburg, MD.

How we search to find just the extra-smallest of the XS to fit her frame. And how many TALL jeans are actually tall?

Some websites try to warn me about the insanity with notations like "Runs small. Order up a size." But when I order up a size and I get my Urban Outfitters "Boyfriend Cardigan" in the mail, I realize the person giving advice had a completely different idea of "runs small" than I do. In other words, they're in Old Navy and I'm in H&M.

Hello, dear readers. I wonder how you are faring in this rough economy? Me, I’m very grateful to have a job, as I know many people who do not. Given the circumstances, I count my blessings every day. Sure, I had to stop shopping at Neiman Marcus like I used to, but that allows me more time to shop at Goodwill!

It is in the spirit of gratitude that I come to you with a request. A request that I rarely make through this blog, which I hope emphasizes the importance of this appeal.

As you know, many, many, many people have lost jobs this year and are struggling to make ends meet. Many of these jobs will never come back, and the people who lost them may need to train for new careers as a result.

Going to Paris!

Today’s Goodwill Good Buy of the Week is an adorable suit that appears to be handmade. The jacket is a beautiful harvest gold color with white piping and gold crackle-textured buttons. The lining of the jacket has a picture of the Eiffel Tower. So cute! And the skirt also features Parisian graphics including the Eiffel Tower and some other French images in the same gold color as the jacket, on a white/cream base. The skirt has some wide pleats that give it a flowing quality. The waistline is trimmed with gold ribbon and is lined with white satin fabric.

There is no tag inside to indicate a brand, size or fabric content, but the measurements are as follows:

Jacket: 16.5 in. across the back from shoulder to shoulder; 39 in. bust; 35 in. waist
Skirt: 31.5 in. waist; open hip.

I found this outfit at the Sterling, Virginia Goodwill while working on a “secret project.” HINT: You’ll be seeing it very soon on the blog, so stay tuned!

Velvet Goldmine

Velvet is back. You might remember it from the late 80’s/early 90’s and cringe, but this time around, the fabric is getting a new lease on life. It’s not as frumpy as it once was, as designers are reworking the fabric into new shapes, colors and styles that look fresh and vibrant. The bright jewel tones don’t hurt, either.

Here is a triptych of some Fall/Winter 09 runway looks using a modernized velvet.

As you can see, the usage of velvet in these dresses is nothing like the chunky look that you might be used to. The asymmetrical neckline on the dress on the left (Calvin Klein) is an on-point trend for 2009, and I like the way that the dress still looks sleek, even though it is made of a typically thick fabric.

The second dress is by Christopher Kane, who apparently tore apart every preconception about velvet and pieced them back together. He literally poured acid on the fabric to give it that sheer, spliced-together look. I also like the geometric patterns of the dress, which I have never seen on velvet garments of any kind.

The third dress by Marc Jacobs is a fierce little thing! The color is amazing, and it has a certain Martian quality with its Jetsons-like neckline and shoulders. The black belt adds a nice balance to the chartreuse color.

In terms of shopping for velvet, I have picked out a few options for you. Some are pretty pricey, but they give you an idea of some of the shapes and colors that are out there. You can keep these in mind when shopping for knockoffs, or when looking for vintage items that you can update with a bit of ingenuity.

I am just crazy about this velvet vest by Alexander Wang. He has made the soft velvet fabric somehow look tough. Crazy cool!Yoox has a few coats by Aspesi in gorgeous dark tones such as this one:

And this is a very funky horse graphic top by Manoush that reminds me of Chloe from back in the day:

For some less expensive treats, check out Urban Outfitters. In particular, I dig this top by Silence & Noise:
that reminds me a bit of the Christopher Kane dress with its shadow-striping. There are some other velvet options here.

My biggest fear with velvet is that it will add weight to my frame, and I don’t know about you, but I am just not into that at all. That’s why I’m happy to see these new techniques used to slim down a bulky fabric. Now go get you some!

Guest Blogger: How to Wear Thrift

So, I was walking down U Street a couple of weeks ago with a girlfriend of mine and as we were perusing the boutiques, I started complaining about how I wish I could find really amazing but yet cheap handbags and accessories in DC. She immediately scoffed at the notion of purchasing cheap $10 bags (like the ones you find on the streets of NY) because of poor quality (which I agree is an issue) and price (that I disagree with). Over the course of our conversation, I was tried to convince her that fashion is not about how much you pay for item but how you chose to rock it. I then went through a few of my recent fashion highlights (if I may say so myself ;) ) and pointed out to her that these items that she complimented and loved were thrift store (Beaded Jacket $9.95) and vintage (1960 Saks 5th Avenue puff-sleeved vest $60) respectively.

These outfits and my incessant lament about vintage, consignment and thrift shopping have led her and other friends to ask me the following questions:

1. What should I look for when I am vintage shopping or “thrifting?” My general rule of thumb is don’t LOOK. By that I mean, don’t approach it with the same strategy and mindset that you approach mainstream shopping. Browse the racks, shelves, or tables as if you are looking at pieces of art. You will see a beauty in them that you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed.

2. How do I distinguish between a “fashionable” thrift outfit and something that is dowdy/old? “Fashionable” is really about your own taste and confidence. While there are general rules to fashion – proportion, fit, color, cut, etc – CONFIDENCE is the key to looking good and setting trends. I must note however that for some, TASTE is an issue. Nonetheless, if you love fashion you have to be willing to stand by your choice even if it lands you on the “Oh no he/she didn’t list.”

3. How do I incorporate recycled/reused clothing into my existing wardrobe? The best advice I can give in this arena is NEVER WEAR IT HEAD TO TOE! Unless you are Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Chloe Sevigny, or Johnny Depp, just don’t do it. It will take your look from fashion to costume. Instead work your recycled garments into your everyday wardrobe by pairing it with practical pieces. If item is flashy and standouts, pair it with something understated/muted. If it is a complimentary piece, then pair it with something that will give it the most opportunity to shine.

The moral of my story is that "recycled," "hand-me-downs," "second-hand," "reused," "thrift," "vintage" or whatever-other-name-you-chose-to-call-it clothing are some of the most interesting, unique, rare, and expressive fashions out there. So HAVE FUN!!! Fashion truly is about expressing who you are. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Working 9 to 5

This week, we have some work-appropriate pieces for your bidding pleasure - a brand new, tags-on pantsuit, and some pumps that are practical and work-worthy.

This pantsuit by Sandra Angelozzi is soooooo nice! I would guess it is probably about a US size 4, but please check the measurements. The jacket is a size 34 (not sure what sizing this is - either Italian or French?). The back of the jacket is 15 1/2 in. from shoulder to shoulder, the bust is 35 in., and the waist is about 30 in. The fabric content of the shell is 96% polyester/4% rayon, and the lining is 100% acetate. It is a 2 button blazer made of a charcoal gray windowpane plaid fabric, and it has an adorable lining decorated with a heart logo.

The matching cuffed bootcut pants are a size 30, but again, please check the measurements - 28 in. waist, 39 in. hips, 32 in. inseam. Both are new with tags. This is such a cute, trendy but classic suit.

Next, we have 3 pairs of pumps that are suitable for the office.

1. Guess Size 9 cognac brown pumps, 4 in. heel, unworn soles. There is a small scuff on the outer size of one of the shoes, but the bottoms are flawless. I am guessing the scuff came from moving the shoes or from storage, because they appear to be brand new with the store tag on the bottom.

2. The first pair is a tan/beige color in faux croc with a slight shine, with 2 in. heel. Size 7M, also brand new, no scuffs or wear anywhere at all.

3. Same as #2, but in green croc with a subtle shine. Both Liz Flex shoes are very comfortable and have flexible soles and low heels.

Ponchos – I thought they went out of style in 2004? So then what is this noise?

I’m not really sure why these cropped Snuggies are making a comeback now. I don’t see them as an extension of the 80’s retro trend, or of any other trend of the moment at all. It seems like the whole global/ethnic/boho thing has never really disappeared, so maybe it’s tied into that somehow. Far be it from me to understand it, or to explain it to you.

In any event, it does appear to be a trend of today. For a very funny take on the poncho trend from back in 2004, have a look at this article in Slate. I love it, “one size fits all” is never a good idea with fashion. And, ponchos are “your own traveling fort.” LOL!

So… what gives?

I suppose it’s kind of nice to wear a warm, wooly blankey in the Fall. And it’s also kind of nice to be able to get out my crusty dusty brown and teal poncho that I got at the market in Florence. (Just another piece of fashion clutter that I’m still holding onto. But I bought it in Italy. What do you want from me??)

I have to admit, I kind of think this outfit is cute. I like the way they have paired a chunky top with a slim miniskirt, and I love the tights with the whole ensemble. It’s a sexier way to wear a poncho than with jeans. It’s much more sophisticated, leggy and fun. It is easy to get lost in the bulk of the poncho, so wearing it with either a miniskirt or even shorts with tights and boots is a good way to balance out the volume of the poncho with something streamlined.

Missoni has a brightly colored knit poncho at Nordstrom. This is not from 2004, it’s from NOW.

And here is a somewhat updated poncho look from Alexis Iman - a poncho minidress in a light, silky fabric. Hey, if you have the legs, then go for it! I like the fringe boots, too.

I was walking along Madison Avenue during the Pre-Fall season, and I noticed the twinklings of a trend in the storefronts. Showcased in glimpses from Dior to Barneys was a hard silhouette that was hard not to notice: a subtly-fitted waist that sloped, darted, or folded into a nearly geometric hipline. Diamond Hips are upon us.

How did this look skip my attention from all the shows last February, which seemed more about black, show-stopping footwear, and a sidelong glance of an intellectual femininity? And how could I miss it, since I’d placed a secret bet with myself three years ago that this trend would be back into play about this time last year? I now recognize the power of Madison Avenue.

Diamond hips. What are they? In the grand tradition of fashion illustration of the past century, there is an iconic look that has hovered in my consciousness over the years: a woman stands in a fitted suit, skirt tapered at the knee, with her angular hips jutting forward. Shoulder pads or no shoulder pads, long sleeves or three-quartered, knee-length or tea-length skirt, what you notice about her are those hips. Those pointed, unnaturally-sharp hips: precise as the cross-section of a brilliant-cut diamond.

Well, almost as precise. There are variations on the look, and I’ve even discovered some variant names for the shape.

A “peg skirt” is one that tapers at the knee, but it’s almost always paired with piecings, gathers, or pleats that give it a pronounced pelvis, sometimes round, sometimes square.

A “stem skirt” or “pencil skirt” is form-fitting to the knee with front darts that sometimes take a boxy turn up at the top. And “cowl pockets” denotes the pocket treatment whose layered folds either crisply or loosely give one a truly brilliant profile – if creating that diamond a little lower from the waist, at times.

Where did it come from? It’s not hard to find the forerunners of this look over the past few seasons. For about two years we’ve seen the M.C. Hammer pant inching its way back into acceptable visibility. All those waistline folds and gathers aren’t so far from those glorious cowl pockets, which seem like an abstract, pared down version of the same. And with the return of high waistlines and wide belts, 80s nostalgia, and the beautiful tailoring of the series “Mad Men,” it’s easy to see that tailored hip treatments would come to the fore.

There isn’t really as much of a Board of Directors dictating the upcoming seasons as one might be led to believe. Trend is like a shape-shifting jackal, a shadow-creature that weaves in and out of culture like a coyote in the tall grass. It pretends to come from the runways, and it’s said to come from the streets… but it’s probably a bit more than a bit of both: it rises and falls with the spirit of the age… a fluttering of action and reaction to the times, the economy, emerging technologies, business practice. And aesthetically it’s something of the collective human spirit in all of us, not only running into the arms of the ever-new, but also taking part in a type of great conversation of the beauty, history, and style that we use to color our days.

Perhaps a wonder in your mind is how to wear the look. Expertly executed in very crisp, formal fabrics (see the Dior coat), I also saw variations in funky and frolicking draped silk dresses (Balenciaga) that are ready for a night on the town. A Vuitton pant with cowl pockets makes use of fitted, tucked-in tops to accentuate the pockets’ flair. If you took a look at the recent Spring shows, there were quite a few variations on cowl pockets enticing the world to put them on… Tops worked well tight, cropped, tucked in, or layered. With dresses, a more relaxed waist, flapper-style, works best with cowl pockets to de-emphasize a curvy frame and still rock the casual geometry. It’s an exciting look.

I am wondering, come next year, if we won’t find these diamonds are a girl’s best friend?

Nina Gapinski is a men’s denim designer for Rocawear living in New York. She’s been a fan of vintage clothes since the seventh grade (which was over 20 years ago!), and she used to stake out a particular Goodwill in Arlington, VA in the early 90s. Hi. My name is the DCGF, and my closet has become unmanageable.

I can no longer control the management or maintenance of my wardrobe.

It has taken over my house, my car, my office, and even my husband’s closet and dresser drawers. He is none too pleased.

I can’t do laundry because if I do, I have no place to put the clean clothes. My dresser drawers are so full that I broke the face off of one of them. My three closets are overflowing, and I don’t have the time or energy to clean them out. Not only that, but lots of things no longer fit me, but I’m convinced I will fit into them again with just a little more dieting and exercising. That day never seems to come. So, I hold onto them and dream of wearing them again. And they take up space. Lots and lots and lots of space.

I have shoes I haven’t worn in years, but I can’t part with them because I bought them in Paris at Galeries Lafayette. Out of style Sergio Rossi’s. Manolos from my wedding. And some Rene Caovilla hand-painted pumps in a size 6.5 that I bought for myself even though I wear a size 7.5 (below). They are so beautiful they bring tears to my eyes.

My black, blue and white motorcycle jacket from when I owned a black, blue and white Kawasaki Ninja (7 years ago), and matching boots and helmet. I haven’t ridden a motorcycle in years.

A vintage white cashmere coat with a gigantic fur collar. I never wear it, but how can I part with it? You can’t buy a coat like this at Macy’s.

3 different sizes of the exact same black bootcut pants. 500 white t-shirts. And so much cheap crap from Forever 21, I can’t even begin to describe it all. But I like quantity sometimes over quality! Diversity is a good thing!

I have nightmares of Ingwa Melero gowns, BCBG leather pants, Gucci handbags and green vintage leather coats pushing me out of my own bedroom! They’re taking over! My house is not a home!

And the problem is, I just keep shopping! I find so much great stuff at low prices everywhere these days (especially at Goodwill, as you know), I keep bringing more and more “must-have fashion” into the house. My husband’s favorite line is, “Great. Another coat.”

I need professional help. Is there a rehab for too much fashion?

Pretty in Purple

This week, we have some very nice purple pieces for your buying pleasure. I'm so excited about the Etro shoes. Etro is one of my favorite boutique Italian fashion houses. According to Wikipedia, "Its signature look, incorporating bright colors and bold, kaleidoscopic patterns paired with classic tailoring, have frequently featured the paisely. Its men's and women's retail collections also include shoes, leather goods and accessories." These shoes follow the bold Etro look: bright purple patent leather, funky perforation, a delicate bow tie and a small gold charm. They are in very good used condition, but could use a tiny shine to bring them up to their true potential. The heel is about 1/2 inch, and they are a European size 381/2 (US 8). I found a pair of Etro shoes on Yoox for $275. Get them here for much less!

To accompany these fabulous shoes (that I would buy if they fit me), we offer you this handsome purple suede bag by Rafe. It is trimmed in purple patent as well and has heavy goldtone hardware. It's in like-new condition. I did not see any noticeable wear on the bag at all. This bag was purchased at Nordstrom and has the original tag. The retail value is $365.

Finally, we complete our outfit with a feminine lace-trim tunic top by Free People. It is made of a gauzy fabric and trimmed with lace on the top, sleeves and the back. (See the picture of the back of the shirt - so pretty.) It is in good condition (except for 2 spots on the front that should come out in the wash or at the dry cleaners) and can be had for a deep discount. I'm estimating full price for this top would be about $78.

Bright, Shiny Objects

I don't know if it's because of the passing of Michael Jackson, but sequins are so hot right now. I am mezmerized by bright, shiny objects so I'm enjoying this trend a lot. Ooooooooohhhh.... Shiny. I want. Must have it.

Check out these cuh-rayzee leggings from La Rok. They are called "I Am A Rockstar," and yes, you are. I like how the are styled with a simple white tee. An outfit including these pants does NOT need more bling. No, no, no!

They will run you $348 at Saks Fifth Avenue. For me, this is too much for what is probably a passing fashion trend, so I would rather buy a cheaper version. I would rather spend that sum on something that is not a flash-in-the-pan kind of trend. When I'm dropping serious duckets on fashion, I want it to last.

I love this simply cut sheath dress in a subtle beige color, yet covered in sequins.
Donna Karan is a genius of dressmaking. This style is uber flattering to a wide variety of women's figures. It's hard to say "too much!!!" to a dress in this understated shade, but it's anything but basic.

This outfit really works for me. Sequined leggings with a plain black boyfriend blazer. Keeping it simple is the way to go. Kate Walsh shows you how it's done.

I have recreated this outfit for you at a low, low price. You can't beat Forever 21 for trendy stuff at a good price. Sequin leggings for $17.80:

Finding great fashions at thrift stores is like a wonderful treasure hunt with marvelous treasures to be found. To make your treasuring hunting experience easy and fruitful follow these 5 easy steps to great fashion at any thrift store.

1. First look for the colors that you look best in. Go down the racks looking for color first. You don’t even have to pull an article of clothing off the rack until you discover a color that you are attracted to.

2. Next, check out the design lines of the garment. Do you prefer animated designs, stylized designs, or more angles and points in your designs? Look at the collars, pockets, hemlines, and necklines. If the design lines are not right for you, put it back.

3. Fabrication is the next item to consider in a garment. Do you like soft flowing, plush, comfy fabrics? Or do you prefer more structured, fitted garments? The sure way to know if the garment you are considering is right for you, try it on? How does it feel? Does it feel good on your body, only get it if you can say YES!

4. Now look at the pattern – if it has a pattern. Maybe you prefer less pattern or no pattern at all. Is it a pattern that you are attracted to? Is it too busy or too simple? Many women do not even like pattern and prefer solid colors in their clothes. If the pattern is right for you, move on to the next step!

5. If the article of clothing has made it this far, your next step is to look it over for quality. Are there any tears, rips, spots, or flaws? I find many new garments with their price tags and brand tags still hanging on the garment – bonus find!

6. Your last step is a simple question to ask yourself – “do you love it.” I no longer settle for clothes I don’t love and feel good in. I have to be able to say “I love it!” It doesn’t matter what you are paying for it, don’t talk yourself into an article of clothing you can’t say you love even if it is a great thrift store price. If you don’t love it , it will hang in your closet just to gather dust.

Use these simple steps to “step-up” your skills to find great fashion at thrift stores. I have become so successful at thrift store shopping about 80% of my clothes have come from thrift stores. To make it even more fun take along a sister or friend and challenge each other to find the best treasure in the store for the best price. The winner takes the other to lunch!

Here are just a few of my “best” thrift store treasures. I love everything about these clothes, the colors, design lines, fabrications, and pattern. They were all next to new and even the jacket is a high end designer brand that would sell for hundreds of dollars in a retail store. All true treasures from my thrift store treasure hunting.

Operation "I Can Highlight My Own Hair, Yes I Can."

Step 2. Husband says I look Crazy.
Step 3. Sally Beauty Supply.
Step 4. Dark Ash Brown Lowlights.
Step 5. Caramel Highlights.
Step 6. Call a Professional.

Yeah.... so, a few months ago, I had a professional put some copper and magenta highlights in my hair, and I loved the magenta streaks so much I kept staring at them all day long. When my roots started to grow out, I decided that I wanted MORE fuschia, so I thought I could try it myself because I could not afford to go back to the salon.

Enter L'Oreal Colour Rays in Fuschia Flash. My local CVS just happened to have a box in stock. Bonus! According to the box:

A Rush of Colour:

Deep and graphic. Pure concentrated colour. For highlights so intense, they show up even on the darkest hair.
Do a few flashes or an all-over look. It's easy to experiment with our patented highlighting wand. No messy caps to cope with.
A double dose of super-fresh after-colour conditioning shampoo so hair won't freak out or dry out.
Colour Rays. Only for the experimental.

Hmmmm... I consider myself "experimental." Sounds like this is for me, because I like a rush of colour, espeically when it's spelled with a "u." So I gave it a try.

I tried to pick out small strands and go easy, but I was afraid it wouldn't show up bright enough. I guess I went a little bit overboard, and when Husband got home, he said I looked like either 1. a former Goth girl who is almost 40 and trying to rediscover my youth, in an embarrassing and inappropriate way; or 2. someone out of touch with reality and social norms. Either way, it did not sound like a compliment. Off to Sally Beauty Supply for help! [By the way, that store is like Hotel California. It's really hard to leave!]

I decided that I probably needed to use foil to separate the strands so the color wouldn't cover my entire head. The box said "you can lay each highlighted strand down onto the rest of the hair and it won't bleed." Apparently not true with Fuschia Flash! I bought both dark brown AND caramel highlighting kits, the foil, and got down to bidness. Dark Ash Brown first, and it definitely calmed down the neon fuschia to a more "normal" hue. Then on to Caramel, and it didn't really do anything. At that point, it was late Sunday night, and I needed to just take a break. I decided to sleep on it.

In the end, my friends made the following comments:

"I hope you played some appropriate music, Bauhaus???, to celebrate the "moment of fuschia"... ahahaha! (Our poor guys... they must be like, "I have to walk around with HER looking like THAT???!!!", too bad they're not more like Elton John)... hahaha!"

"The fuschia probably compliments the green in the law firm logo as well as the frosted glass."

And my favorite: "Gillian, step away from anything in a box!"

Actually, the Sam Gilliam sculpture in our stairwell has tons of magenta in it. Maybe I CAN wear this color to work after all!

Halloween Encroaches!

Hurry, hurry to your local Goodwill if you haven't found a costume yet. For some ideas on how to make a basic item into a costume, we have chosen 2 pieces to demonstrate.

The first piece is a long, orange kaftan with pretty orange and yellow embroidery. There is no fabric tag, but it feels like a natural material such as cotton or cotton blend. It has long sleeves and hits the floor. The measurements are 40" bust, 48" hip, open waist. I could see this dress as the foundation of a Nefertiti costume, or an African queen. A large hat or wrapped cardboard decorated as a crown, oversized hoop earrings, a beaded collar necklace and plenty of kohl eyeliner completes the look.

Remember this?

You will really love this dress! It's totally "Pretty in Pink." Remember the prom dress???? Aptly named a Crime of Fashion Past, it is an iconic image that I will never forget. The measurements of the dress are 37" bust, 30" waist, and 40" hips.

Ahhh, memories! And just for fun, here is a eulogy to John Hughes with some great pictures and clips from his movies.

Molly was an inspiration to scores of broke indie girls like me. We realized we could be the Belle of the Ball, too, with limited means. A trip to the fabric store, the thrift store, some sewing skills and a healthy dose of creativity would nab us that popular guy with the fancy car, if we played our cards right.
