MSI's Wind U160 netbook available in the US

MSI announced new gadget, Wind U160 netbook at CES, and we've taken a closer look. Sitting alongside the U135, the new Wind is expected to come in at just under the £300 mark in the UK.

The new model gains a brand new polished case, a bumpy trackpad and a Chicklet keyboard with elevated keys. It includes Windows 7 Starter, a 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, a 250-GB hard drive and a 6-cell battery that lasts 7.5 hours, according to MSI

The 1kg 10.1-inch netbook features a completely new chassis for MSI and has a premium finish with a brown glossy lid and a dimpled trackpad (which we're not a big fan of). The keyboard, on the other hand, seemed perfectly usable.

Its keyboard still suffers from an awkwardly small question-mark key. I disliked the puny trackpad on the first MSI Wind (which I used to own), and I dislike the U160’s bumpy trackpad even more: The purpose of the bumps is to mouse around more accurately, but I was doing the opposite.

Would we buy it? Well yes – at £300 it represents great value for money and if the price comes down even more it'll be into the realms of a steal.

Under the hood, the U160 packs Intel's latest 1.66Ghz PineTrail N450 Atom processor alongside 1GB of memory (upgradeable to 2GB) and a 250GB hard drive. Graphics are provided by Intel's GMA 3150.

Nokia's just announced a 16GB version of its crowd pleasing, capacitive touchscreen X6 to compliment the current 32GB model. The persistence of manufacturers when it comes to touchscreen mobile phones has to be applauded. Nokia X6 get its very own baby brother in the form of a new 16GB model.

Unlike its 32GB sibling, the 16GB version doesn’t Come with Music but its sizable on board storage still boasts enough space for 5,500 tracks. Nokia has recently announced the highly stylish and well designed mobile phone, N900. Though it has nothing to do with N-series mobile phones, it has really eye catching attraction. Panasonic unveils DMC-FX66, DMC-TS2, DMC-ZS5, DMC-ZS7 and DMC-ZR3 Lumix compacts

Panasonic has announced the latest handful camera, Lumix compact cameras. This eye catching camera featuring both the new Venus Engine VI and Venus Engine HD II. These features will perform quicker with better noise reduction. Panasonic’s camera is compatible with the approaching SDXC cards too.

• DMC-FX66: This one's a 14.1 megapixel slim camera with an F2.8-5.9 25-125mm (5x zoom) ultra-wide-angle lens (with Power O.I.S lens-shift stabilization). The 720p video capture and 1.06 second start-up time are sweet too, but no AVCHD Lite here. On the back there's a 2.7-inch 230k-dot screen with wide viewing angle. All this is just 5.11 ounces including battery.

• DMC-TS2 (FT2): This camera has a lot in common with the FX66 above -- same sensor, same image stabilization, same scene modes (but with three extra), same focus modes and same screen. The main differences are its AVCHD Lite 720p video format, F3.3-5.9 28-128mm (4.6x) lens and added ruggedness -- waterproof to 10m, shockproof to 2m, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and dustproof. It's of course slightly heavier too -- 6.63 ounces including battery.

• DMC-ZS5 (TZ8) and DMC-ZS7 (TZ10): These two appear to be twins, except the former has a smaller screen (2.7-inch with 230k dots instead of 3-inch with 460k dots) and lacks GPS, AVCHD Lite and mini-HDMI port. Both do 12.1 megapixel pictures and 720p videos, have F3.3-4.9 25-300mm (12x) lens with lens-shift stabilization, and have identical scene and focus modes. With battery these weigh 7.55 ounces and 7.69 ounces respectively.

• DMC-ZR3 (ZX3): Whoa! Another 14.1 megapixel camera which does AVCHD Lite. The specs are almost identical to the TS2 except for the lens (F3.3-5.9 25-200mm 8x ultra-wide-angle) and lack of ruggedness. It weighs 5.61 ounces with battery.

Nokia has announced its slider phone range with the addition of two new mid-range phones, Nokia 6700 Slide and Nokia 7230.As per as design is concerned, both phones are 3G ready and are optimised for sharing content over the Internet.

The new Nokia 6700 slide features a 2.2-inch QVGA display, measures 95.2 x 46 x 15.9mm and weighs 110 grams. It comes with 3G connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and capture key, web browsing with HSDPA and HSUPA and support for email and Ovi chat. The phone packs S60 based operating system.
