Today the famous tipster @evleaks has posted renders of Normandy running on Android. We get to see a glimpse of Nokia's launcher, particularly the lockscreen, Viber and Skype apps. Judging by the Normandy's status bar, this should be a dual-SIM phone.

HTC Sense 5.5 first screenshots ! Ability to disable Blinkfeed included

We already know for a few months, that HTC has already been working on the next version of their famous UI - HTC Sense 5.5. Some of the Sense 5.5 features are already present in the latest HTC One Android 4.3 build, however they are currently disabled in the framework.

Home screen - now you can disable or enable HTC BlinkFeed easily.

Android Quick Settings - now you can re-arrange the content of the QS panel.

Improved HTC keyboard with possibility to add more emoticons.

Improved camera - "Dual capture" and "Panorama+", Storage and Recent Apps panel.

New HTC BlinkFeed categories, custom topics tab and minor changes to alarm clock.

Many more changes are of course under the hood, so expect improved performance and overall UI smoothness. Many bugs are also fixed, so the incoming HTC Sense 5.5 should bring a lot of joy for all HTC fans!

Nexus 5 specifications leaked with alleged Android 4.4 KitKat log file

An alleged Android 4.4 KitKat log file has been leaked, apparently revealing specifications of the rumoured Nexus 4 successor, thought to be called the Nexus 5.
Myce.com has spotted a log file reportedly running on the Nexus 5. The log file reveals the device running 'Key Lime Pie' with build number KRS74H. The log file is 10MB in size and includes over 1,33,000 lines, claims the site.
The site further mentions that the log is running on a Hammerhead device, which appears to be a codename for Nexus 5 formerly dubbed the LG D820.
The leaked log file reveals some of the specifications which include a 5-inch display (precisely 4.97-inch) with full-HD resolution and boasting a pixel density of 442ppi. The device is seen powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage. For camera, the device sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with no details about optical image stabilisation (OIS) while there is a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.
Further, the alleged log file reveals that the rumoured Nexus 5 supports Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, and GPS connectivity. Moreover, the log file shows the device supporting North America LTE bands. The alleged Nexus 5 will also support wireless charging, suggests the leaked log files.
Over the last month, we have seen several leaks turn up showing the alleged Nexus 4 successor's design and specifications.
Earlier, Nestle revealed the first news about the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat on Facebook, claiming an October release date. While this was not an official confirmation from Google about Android 4.4 KitKat's release, as a partner, Nestle's German Facebook handle was kind enough to confirm that it is coming next month.
Prior to this, the alleged Nexus 4 successor was spotted in live images and a video. The leaked images showed a pre-production unit of the next Nexus smartphone that revealed the front and rear panel.
It is rumoured that the next Nexus smartphone would run Android 4.4 KitKat, and that the smartphone would be the platform lead device for the new platform, due to be launched at the same event.

HTC One Max to arrive with Beats Audio

Beats Electronics recently bought itself out of the HTC deal and it was unclear whether this would also bring an end to the Beats Audio technology in HTC flagship smartphones. Well, the good news is Beats Electronics are not done with HTC just yet as the company's COO has confirmed that the upcoming HTC flagship will feature beats audio.

Luke Wood, president and the chief operating officer at Beats Electronics, says that the company still has 25% investments in HTC along with a commercial deal with the Taiwanese manufacturer. Luke also mentioned that they have a large-format HTC device out in the fall, which is presumably the HTC One Max that features the Beats Audio.

However, Mr. Wood declined to comment whether the Beats relationship with HTC would continue past the One Max or not, but says that they have learned some great things from their cooperation from the Taiwanese manufacturer.

Here's hoping HTC and Beats will figure things out and continue to deliver smartphones with great audio output to the market.

BlackBerry to go private in $4.7b sale to Fairfax consortium

Smartphone maker BlackBerry has agreed to go private in a $4.7 billion deal led by its biggest shareholder, allowing the on-the-go email pioneer to regroup away from public scrutiny after years of falling fortunes and slumping market share.

The $9 a share tentative offer, from a consortium led by property and casualty insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd, will set a floor for any counteroffers that might emerge for Blackberry, which has been on the block since August.

As an investor, Fairfax Chief Executive Prem Watsa is often described as the Canadian Warren Buffett because he also takes the long view.

Blackberry shares peaked above $148 in June 2008 when the company's devices were still the top choice for bankers, politicians and lawyers.

The stock, halted pending the announcement on Monday, closed below the offer price on Nasdaq, at $8.82, indicating the market's lack of faith that other bids would emerge.

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) has installed the world’s first ‘GoSleep’ sleeping pods which allow passengers to grab a few hours sleep between flights for AED45 ($12.25) per hour, it has been announced.

Ten ‘GoSleep’ pods have been installed in Terminal 3 and in the Al Dhabi Lounge in Terminal 1, with a further 35 on order for installation later this year.

The chairs can convert in private flat beds and cover offers privacy to sleep. Costing AED45 an hour, the pods will eventually also include Internet access, storage for luggage and other valuables and facilities to charge laptops, mobile telephones, and other electronic devices.

Commenting on this initiative, Mohammed Al Bulooki, Chief Commercial Officer of ADAC, said: “The introduction of ‘GoSleep’ sleeping pods is another step towards exceeding customers’ expectations and delivering world-class levels of service."

Ex-Nokia team creates 'Jolla' mobile phone

A team of ex-Nokia engineers and designers has unveiled the Jolla, a totally new smartphone with a totally new operating system. Even if this snazzy new device crashes and burns like other dark-horse mobile devices in the past, it sure will look good while it does so.

The phone's most unique aspect has to be its split nature: The front has the usual smartphone guts and a 4.5-inch HD screen. But attach an "other half" to the back and your phone gets a new look, new profile, or even new features. Each rear piece can be independently configured — have one for work and one for personal use, for instance, or buy one that adds exclusive apps or even something like wireless charging.

Jolla's existence is entirely due to the dedication of a few former employees of Nokia, who continued work on the company's original mobile OS, MeeGo, after the 2011 partnership with Microsoft sank hopes for MeeGo's release. A separate company was set up to finish the work started at Nokia, and the results are impressive.

Sailfish OS, as the evolved form of MeeGo is known now, is beautiful and quite different from existing mobile operating systems. Instead of plain icons on a homescreen, there are live panels for applications showing the latest emails, news, and so on — not unlike Windows Phone.

Facebook and other social networks and services are baked right in, and contacts and messaging are integrated seamlessly. Gestures are everywhere, making the OS perhaps less approachable to casual users but more powerful overall. Jolla's Chief Designer, Martin Schule, demonstrated it for tech blog Kick:

It's certainly ambitious, but that may not be enough to crack the mobile market, which is sewn up tightly by Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Many will remember the Palm Pre, hailed by many as a breath of fresh air in the smartphone world, but which cratered spectacularly, only to be bought and quietly integrated by HP in 2010.

The company aims to ship the device before the end of 2013, and has announced preliminary specs and pricing (€399, or around $500). Reuters reports that the phone may hit Asia before the rest of the world, but there's nothing official on that front just yet.Interested parties can get a spot on the pre-order list for free at Jolla's site, or pay for special editions and accessories.

Indian-American teen invents device that can charge phone in 20 seconds

Washington: An 18-year-old Indian-American girl has invented a super-capacitor device that could potentially charge a cellphone in less than 20 seconds.

Eesha Khare from Saratoga in California was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Intel Foundation after developing the tiny device that fits inside mobile phone batteries that could allow them to charge within 20-30 seconds.

The so-called super-capacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time, NBC News reported.
Ms Khare has been awarded USD 50,000 for developing the tiny device. She has also attracted the attention of tech giant Google for her potentially revolutionary invention.

According to the teenager, her device can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared to 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries.

"My cellphone battery always dies," she said, when asked about what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology.

Super-capacitors allowed her to focus on her interest in nanochemistry - "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."

The gadget has, so far, only been tested on an LED light, but the good news is that it has a good chance of working successfully in other devices, like mobile phones, the report said.

Ms Khare sees it fitting inside cellphones and the other portable electronic devices proliferating in today's world.

"It is also flexible, so it can be used in rollup displays and clothing and fabric. It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense," she added.

Volkswagen's mini SUV Taigun likely to be launched first in India.The Taigun concept, based on a stretched version of the VW Up’s NSF (New Small Family) platform, made its debut at the Sao Paolo International Motor Show in October last year and previews VW’s future SUV face.

Measuring 3859mm (just under the crucial four metre mark) in length, the concept features a 108bhp, three-cylinder, turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol motor. The engine bay of the Up is currently not wide enough to take a four-cylinder engine, but it could be modified to recieve the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel that VW is developing for India.

Privacy 'impossible' with Google Glass

When Google Glass was unveiled, the tech world instantly fell into two camps. Camp one was excited: we're living in the sci-fi future! Camp two, though, wasn't so happy. It's vapourware! some said, while others worried that Google just wanted to plaster ads on the entire world. Is either camp correct? Let's find out.

What is Google's Project Glass?

Google Glass is the attempt to make wearable computing mainstream, and it's effectively a smart pair of glasses with an integrated heads-up display and a battery hidden inside the frame.

Wearable computing is not a new idea, but Google's enormous bank account and can-do attitude means that Project Glass could well be the first product to do significant numbers.

When will it be released?

Originally Project Glass was mooted for a public release in 2014 at the earliest but the latest news on the Google Glass release date suggest it's beginning to look like we could see consumer units by the end of 2013.

That's because the prototype Explorer units are becoming an increasingly common site around San Francisco - and Google is even allowing competition 'winners' to pay $1,500 to get these early offerings.

What does Google Glass do?

The core of Google Glass is its tiny prism display which sits not in your eyeline, but a little above it. You can see what is on the display by glancing up. The glasses also have an embedded camera, microphone, GPS and, reportedly, use bone induction to give you sound.

Voice control is used to control the device; you say 'ok glass' to get a range of options including taking pictures, videos, send messages using speech to text, 'hang out' with people or get directions to somewhere. You access these options by saying them out loud.

Most of this functionality is self explanatory; hang out is Google's video conferencing technology and allows you to talk to a people over web cam, and stream them what you are seeing and the directions use Google Maps and the inbuilt GPS to help you find your way.

The results are displayed on the prism - essentially putting data into your view like a head up display (HUD). It's potentially incredibly handy. Also rather nifty is the potential for automatic voice and speech recognition - and Google has given its Glass project a big boost by snapping up specialists DNNresearch.

People are already developing some rather cool/scary apps for Google Glass - including one that allows you to identify your friends in a crowd, and another that allows you to dictate an email.

What are the Google Glass specifications?

An FCC filing in the US revealed many potential details, suggesting that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth would be used to send pictures to the screen, whilst bone-induction may be used for sound, vibrating your skull to communicate the sound into your inner ear. It's not a new technology, but certainly does have critics who suggest that it falls short of traditional headphones.

We don't have a lot of the final details on specs just yet - but expect Google Glass to run modified Android, to sport a decent resolution camera with a decent lens and we'd be fairly certain that the microphone needs to be a good quality.

There will be a GPS chip, and the lightweight and flexible glasses design will come in five colours - Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale, Cotton, Sky. That's black, orange, grey, white and blue for anyone that prefers plain English over marketing speak.

I already wear glasses. Will Google Glasses work for me?

Yes. Google is experimenting with designs that will fit over existing glasses so you don't have to wear two lots of specs.

In fact, you should be able to get them before 2013 ends, according to Google.

What is the Project Glass price?

The NYT again: according to "several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named," the glasses are expected "to cost around the price of current smartphones." So that's around $750/£500, then, possibly with the help of a hefty Google subsidy.

The latest hints definitely suggest a price that will make them attractive to technophiles.

The developer versions - traditionally more expensive that the final consumer units - were made available for pre-order for $1,500 (c£966).

As to WHERE you can buy the specs; online will be a certainty, but don't rule out Glass making a debut in a all-new Google Store, with the search giant apparently considering actual shops to showcase the tech to those who haven't been following every development.

Who is providing the competition?

Of course, with something as high profile as Google Glass, every major company has been linked with building a competitor.

Apple and Microsoft are Google's most obvious rivals - and both are rumoured to be working on their own equivalents, and Sony has gone as far as to patent a Glass-alike offering.

Is Project Glass evil?

It could be. Google's business is about making money from advertising, and some people worry that Google Glass is its attempt to monetise your eyeballs by blasting you with ads whenever you look at something.

If you think pop-ups are annoying in a web browser, imagine them in front of your face. The ADmented Reality spoof is one of very many parodies that made us laugh.

Some of the parodies actually make a good point by showing people bumping into stuff: heads-up displays can be distracting, and there may be safety issues too. Until Google ships its self-driving car, the thought of drivers being distracted by their glasses is fairly terrifying.

There are privacy implications too. Never mind your web history: Google Glass might record everything you see and do.

There is a red recording light, but the tech certainly raises some key debates that will become more relevant as this kind of technology surfaces. What are the repercussions from having everything you say potentially taped, turned into text and searchable? What are the repercussions for free speech.

RIM launches BlackBerry Porsche P'9981 at Rs 1.4 lakh

Blackberry-maker Research In Motion, which is facing troubles in global markets, said it will top industry growth this year in India.

The Canadian company RIM, which has been fast losing its grip on the market of late to more agile players like Samsung and Apple, launched the BlackBerry Porsche, developed in association with Porsche Design, early this year globally.
The ultra-premium BlackBerry Porsche P'9981 is priced at Rs 1,39,990. On this highly aspirational phone, RIM India managing director Sunil Dutt told PTI that the phone is about power, style and aspiration.

"We will not be selling this through the traditional channels. The discerning customers can order their phones to begin with and later on, we will have select outlets like luxe watch and accessories showroom located on the high streets," Dutt said, hours before the domestic launch.
"The domestic smartphone market is growing at over 40 per cent this year, after clipping at 87 per cent in 2011. I am sure that we will be able to grow much faster than the industry rate," Dutt said, while refusing to put a number, citing the silence period the parent company is into now.
He also refused to put a sales target for the new launch on the same grounds. "The Porsche Design P'9981 smartphone from BlackBerry is a perfect culmination of style and functionality with exceptional look and feel," said Dutt.
BlackBerry enjoys 15 per cent of the smartphone market share in the country as of March 2012, up from 13 per cent the previous year, which places it at the third slot after Nokia and Samsung, according to CyberMedia Research data.
In 2011, the domestic smartphones market saw launch of 150 models. Smartphone shipments touched 11.2 million units in the year recording an annual growth of 87 per cent.
Nokia emerged as the leader in the segment with a 38 per cent share followed by Samsung at 28 per cent.
On the rationale behind such a costly phone at a time when the overall sentiment is down, Dutt, who joined RIM India last December from Samsung Telecom, said the market can still afford luxury products.
Some of the salient features of P'9981 are the design by Porsche Design that comes with forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, sculpted Qwerty keyboard, and crystal clear touch display. It also has an exclusive PIN that easily identifies the user as holder of this phone.
It features a 1.2 GHz processor and liquid graphics technology, HD video recording, 24-bit high resolution graphics, advanced sensors, and built-in support for NFC (near field communications) apart from 8 GB of on-board memory, expandable to up to 40 GB with a microSD card.

Microsoft launched the new Tablet Surface on Monday. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer described the new device as a “companion hardware innovation” for Windows 8. ”We see a tablet designed the way Windows is designed. A tablet that’s a great PC. A PC that’s a great tablet,” added Windows chief Steven Sinofsky.

The Microsoft team showed off two versions of the Surface: One running Windows RT (i.e. Windows’ as-yet-unreleased tablet-based OS), the other running the as-yet-unreleased Windows 8 Pro. The RT version includes an USB 2.0 input, is 9.3 mm thick, and weighs just under 1.5 pounds. The Pro version is slightly thicker and heavier, with a USB 3.0 input, and is intended to operate as a full PC.

Acer Aspire S7: Windows 8 touchscreen Ultrabook

Acer has just announced two new Windows 8 Ultrabooks with a built-in touchscreen: the 13.3-inch and 11.6-inch Aspire S7.

The new touch-enabled laptops have been revealed at the Computex trade show in Taipei and promise to let users get the most from Microsoft's new operating system when it launches later in the year.

Available in two sizes, 13.3-inch and 11.6-inch, the addition of a touchscreen means Acer can claim they are "the thinnest and smallest, respectively, Full HD touch Ultrabooks".

Acer is being pretty stingy on specs at the moment, but has confirmed that the 13.3-inch model offers up to 12 hours of battery life, while the 11.6-inch model can run for up to 9 hours from a single charge. The S7 also comes with a backlit keyboard.

The Slider S20 is powered by Intel Core CPU. It features an 11.6" touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, and USB 3.0.

The MSI Slider S20 hybrid ultra book and tablet will be launching in Europe during September with prices starting from around €800 or $999. Rising to around €900 for the Ivy Bridge equipped version.

Samsung Series 5:Ultra convertible and Ultra touch

Samsung introduced two Series 5 touch-based Ultrabooks at Computex 2012. One featuring a classic laptop is called the Ultra Touch. Another is names as Ultra Convertible, which can be folded in both directions.  

Both laptops are based on Windows 8 OS and sport touchscreens with pixel dimensions of 1366x768. Other features include an HDMI port, two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port, Ethernet, memory card reader, and a chiclet type keyboard. From the images it appears that these keyboards aren't backlit. According to the reports, Samsung hasn't provided any information about the CPU and RAM.  

Asus Transformer Book: Laptops with detachable touchscreens

Asus has revealed Asus Transformer Book, Laptops with detachable touchscreens running on Windows 8 at Computex 2012. The Transformer Book builds upon the same concept as the firm’s moderately popular Android tablets, the Transformer and Transformer Prime, except it runs a full blown version of Windows 8 powered by an x86 Intel Core i processor.

The device itself looks almost as thin and light as one of Asus’ Zenbook ultrabooks and comes in 11.6, 13 and 14-inch sizes. All three models will have an IPS display with a native 1920×1080 resolution. Inside the tablet portion is a choice of Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 “Ivy Bridge” processors and up to 4GB of RAM, while in notebook mode you also get the power of discrete graphics with an unspecified Nvidia chip.

Asus Taichi: a dual-display Windows 8

Asus has just announced the Taichi laptop / tablet hybrid at Computex 2012 in Taipei. Essentially a laptop with a display on both sides of its lid, the Taichi features either dual 13.3-inch or 11.6-inch IPS HD displays, an Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM, SSD storage, two USB 3.0 ports, Micro HDMI, mini DisplayPort, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and "HD" front-facing camera.

Its external screen is capable of multitouch and supports stylus input. When closed the Taichi functions like a regular Windows 8 tablet, and you'll find a dedicated Windows 8 button, hardware volume keys, and a rotation lock toggle on the side. The Taichi is also NFC-enabled, and will be able to run Android apps through the BlueStacks app launcher.

The new Generation computers making difficult to differentiate a tablet from a notebook or ultrabook. You can flip it slide it and sometimes can be used as dual screen with different functions on both screens. Its a blur line between a laptop and a tablet

At Computex Taipei, the world's second largest computer show, visitors flocked to the booths trying out every twist and turn that converts an ultrabook into a tablet.

Lenovo Group Ltd's IdeaPad Yoga and Asustek Computer Inc's Taichi have screens that bend all the way back. Samsung Electronics' Hybrid becomes an ultrabook when the tablet clips onto a keyboard with magnetic hinges.

One tablet-ultrabook convertible that garnered attention was Asustek's Taichi, whose dual-sided screens can run different applications at the same time.
