FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., June 16, 2017 – An impressive streak in customer loyalty continues for its eighth year in a row, as Hyundai is again ranked No. 1 in the automotive industry in the Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index. Brand Keys, a New York–based customer loyalty and engagement consultancy, publishes this annual syndicated study, which examines customers’ relationships with 740 brands in 83 categories.

Distinctive new exterior styling transforms Sonata’s visual signature. The dramatic new appearance is highlighted by Hyundai’s bold new “cascading grille” in front and an all-new rear with more prominent branding and relocation of the license plate in the bumper. New sheet metal for the sculpted hood, front fenders, and trunk makes the dynamic new look possible. The current Sonata has been well received by owners for its ride and handling, and Hyundai engineers further refined the chassis for 2018. To achieve this, the rear suspension receives 21 percent thicker trailing arms to better manage heavy suspension loads, while new bushings allow for more ride compliance and quicker response times. The steering system’s torsion bar stiffness has been increased by 12 percent to improve steering responsiveness and new steering calibration further improves on-center feel.

The top-of-the-line 2.0T engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which adds ratio range at both the top and bottom for improved performance and efficiency. All 2.0-liter turbo Sonatas ride on 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin tires.

Adding to an already impressive list of standard safety equipment, every 2018 Sonata is equipped with Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA). The Sonata is the only mainstream mid-size car sold with this safety technology as standard equipment. June 13, 2017 – Hyundai Motor has unveiled the latest vehicle in its expanding line-up of stylish SUVs, the Kona compact SUV. With a strong, impactful design and uncompromised individuality, the Kona is designed to appeal to modern customers with active lifestyles.

The Kona joins Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport in a growing line-up of Hyundai Motor SUVs, as the company continues to widen customer choice in the segment. At the world premiere of its new B-segment SUV, Hyundai Motor reaffirmed its promise to deliver SUVs that feature progressive design with high interior refinement and spaciousness.

The Kona will go on sale in Korea later this month, followed by North America and Europe.

Uncompromised individuality and purposeful characterThe Kona is a brand-new challenger in the B-SUV segment, with uncompromised individuality and innovative features. The Kona’s bold, daring image hints at the future design direction of Hyundai Motor’s next generation of SUV models and creates a unique proposition in the compact SUV segment.

Kona stands out from the crowd with high contrast design elements and striking style. Its masculine protective, ‘armor’, combines powerfully with the futuristic LED lighting to create a high-tech look. Despite its unique appearance, the Kona doesn’t sacrifice sophistication and is highly capable – a combination designed to appeal to the Millennial demographic.

Unique and stylish exterior designThe Kona’s stand-out design is reinforced by the car’s voluminous, aggressive body styling, that emphasizes the car’s well-proportioned, dynamic silhouette. Its low and wide stance complements the car’s stylish profile, with the long wheel base and short overhangs ensuring sporty, nimble handling, in addition to delivering superior driving stability at high speed.

‘Composite lamps’ enhance the Kona’s high-tech and mechanical appearance. The slim daytime running lights (DRL) incorporate turn signals and are positioned in a ‘stack’, separate to the LED headlights.

The Kona’s front is powerful, as its ‘armor’ shows its readiness for extreme activities. The compact SUV also adopts Hyundai Motor’s new family identity, the Cascading Grille, featuring a sporty mesh pattern, flanked by exceptional wing-type fenders that dominate the front design.

The visual relationship between the composite lamps, Hyundai's signature Cascading Grille and the unique armor design results in a totally distinct character, which is important in the increasingly competitive B-SUV segment.

Further stand-out design elements at the side reinforce the car’s tough and functional qualities. Most notably the contrasting black ‘armor’ that provides a protective skin and visually connects the front to the rear.

As with the front LED arrangement, the rear light configuration also creates a truly unique signature appearance. The slim brake lights, turn indicators and reverse lamp are placed in a separate configuration, surrounded by protective skin that begins at the C-pillar garnish.

In addition to the instantly recognizable shape, a number of playful color variations allow buyers to customize their Kona. The roof is finished with a two-tone color scheme, providing high contrast between the body and wheels – satisfying customers with a desire to express their individuality.

Spacious interior delivers comfort and convenienceThe unique features of the exterior continue inside, with a strong horizontal character line creating a wide and spacious feel. Even with its compact dimensions and low roof line, the Kona delivers best-in-class interior space.

The sleek and simple layout interior contrasts with the bold, adventurous exterior design. The AVN (Audio, Visual, Navigation) monitor incorporates Hyundai Motor’s advanced infotainment features. The monitor appears to float on the dashboard, contributing to the sense of openness.

The mechanical air vents and functional button arrangement reflect the high-tech functionality of the exterior. The AVN and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are surrounded by soft, fluid details that contribute to a sensuous experience and enhance the comfort-focused environment.

The all-new compact platform has been developed to provide customers with a true SUV experience. SUV-level ground clearance and an elevated seating position ensure better visibility for drivers and increases comfort on long journeys.

Kona offers occupants generous interior space by optimizing the underfloor layout, including the 4WD drivetrain and exhaust system, to reduce central tunnel intrusion. The suspension component layout is optimized at the rear, allowing for a lower floor and seating position to deliver class-leading levels of headroom and ease of access for rear occupants.

Designers also optimized interior space to maximize luggage storage capabilities, reflecting the requirements of customers with active lifestyles. The split-folding rear seats fold flat, with a two-level loading floor that allows easy access for a bicycle or golf club storage.

All-new platform delivers exceptional power and performanceWith an all-new compact SUV platform developed for the Kona, Hyundai Motor looks to set new performance standards for the compact SUV segment. The powertrain layout is optimized to create a compact platform capable of incorporating the car’s four-wheel-drive system while maintaining interior space.

The Kona blends exceptional fuel efficiency with a fun urban driving experience, delivering power and performance levels that are not often found in vehicles in its segment. The range of small-displacement turbo-charged petrol engines and diesel powertrains deliver a dynamic driving experience for nimble, easy motoring.

The new Kona is offered with a combination of gasoline and diesel engines of various power outputs – dependent on the market.

A 2.0-liter MPI Atkinson engine produces 149PS, with a 0-100km/h time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 194km/h. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the engine delivers maximum torque of 179 NM (13.8 kgf · m) at 4500rpm.

The Gamma 1.6T-GDI engine boasts 177PS, a 0-100km/h time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h. The engine delivers maximum torque of 265NM (27kgf · m) from 1,500 to 4,500rpm and is mated to Hyundai’s efficient and responsive seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT).

In addition to the 1.6T-GDI engine, customers in Europe can also opt for Hyundai’s downsized 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder engine with six-speed manual transmission. This turbo-charged powerplant is optimized for efficiency and produces 120PS, a 0-100km/h time of 12 seconds, top speed of 181km/h and maximum torque of 172NM (17.5kgf · m) from 1,500 to 4000 rpm.

Also available will be a 1.6 diesel engine for select markets, including Europe.

The newly-developed SUV’s chassis is engineered to be rigid, topped with a lightweight body for dynamic driving performance and a comfortable ride. The platform is optimized to permit SUV levels of ground clearance, while the optional 4WD system and drivetrain is intelligently packaged to offer a spacious interior despite its compact proportions.

To integrate the optional four-wheel drive system, Hyundai Motor engineers created a new intercooler layout and setting for the transmission to minimize intrusion into the cabin space. The rear layout of the platform is also optimized to save space. The suspension, fuel and exhaust components carefully package to maximize rear occupant room.

The front suspension features a McPherson strut system, receiving a new sub-frame bush mounting and best-in-class tire trace to enhance comfort and reduce NVH. The system incorporates SUV geometry for refined body movement on rough roads or harsh off-road terrain.

Different rear suspension systems have been developed for both 2WD and 4WD, to deliver a comfortable ride and sporty handling with either drivetrain. At the front, the rear subframe receives new bush structure for the 2WD suspension set-up, with a high-stiffness torsion beam for greater stability and control. The 4WD configuration features a dual-arm multi-link suspension system to refine overall driving dynamics on all surface types.

Strong and protective body for passenger safetyHyundai Motor is the only car manufacturer to make its own steel to produce its vehicles globally, providing great benefits for the Kona. The lightweight body frame has been developed with 51.8% Advanced High Strength Steel to deliver class-leading levels of passive safety.

Hot stamping methods produce lightweight, super-strong structural elements to maximize the cabin’s central safety zone. This proves that small cars can deliver exceptional passenger protection. The length of structural adhesives used in production extends to 114.5 meters, providing additional torsional rigidity and further reducing weight – which also benefits fuel efficiency.

The platform also features an innovative multi-load path structure – an advanced energy dispersion technology that boosts impact tolerance by dispersing crash energy across multiple structures to protect passengers in the event of an accident.

Class-leading driver assistance through active safety systemsHyundai Motor sets out to care for its customers in all of its activities. The new model showcases Hyundai Motor’s capabilities and commitment to enhancing the safety of drivers, passengers and fellow road-users.

Class-leading active safety features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera and radar to detect imminent collision and avoid impact or minimize damage by braking autonomously. Three further systems also utilize the front-view camera to boost safety and convenience: Lane Keeping Assist (LKA); High Beam Assist (HBA); and Driver Attention Warning (DAW).

By sensing road markings, Lane Keep Assist helps to prevent accidental lane departure by steering the car automatically if required. High Beam Assist automatically controls the high beams depending on surroundings, while the Driver Attention Warning system monitors a spectrum of driver-related characteristics to detect driver fatigue or careless driving.

The car’s radar systems also assist with the Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) to detect approaching vehicles that may be obscured from view during high speed driving. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collison Warning (RCCW) detects when another vehicle may have entered the car’s reversing path.

Advanced infotainment and connectivity technologyThe Kona boasts a suite of sophisticated technologies, paired with user-friendly functionality to ensure driver and passengers can stay informed and entertained. The premium infotainment system offers various advanced connectivity features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay where specified with a 5-, 7- or 8-inch display (offered as standard or option dependent on market). A new combiner Head-Up Display (HUD) is fitted to the Kona, projecting a virtual image onto the clear glass panel mounted behind the instrument panel to enable the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road. With a projected image size of eight-inches at a two meter distance and class-leading luminance of more than 10,000 candela per square meter, the Kona’s combiner HUD ensures both excellent day- and night-time visibility. In a first for the segment, the Kona features smartphone wireless charging. Available as an option with all Kona models, customers simply place a compatible smartphone on the wireless charging interface, located in the center console storage, to easily recharge without the need for cables. The system also indicates when the phone has fully charged, reminds occupants to remove their phone when exiting the vehicle, and detects when a foreign object is in the recharging area that could interfere with charging.

Enhanced driving dynamics for urban and off-road funThe Kona was developed with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics and responsive performance for city driving. The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric is one of the newest battery-powered vehicles to hit the market, and among the latest-generation of all-electric vehicles that started with modern pioneers like the Nissan Leaf and continues with the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt.

The Ioniq is actually the name of a trio of electrified cars in the Hyundai lineup. As its name suggests, the Ioniq Electric is, you got it, all electric. The other two players in the lineup are the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, which have a traditional gasoline engine along with an electrified powertrain.

In addition to not having a gasoline engine, the Ioniq Electric differs from its siblings in availability, price and the way it drives. Regarding the second point, the Ioniq Electric starts at $30,335, vs. $23,035 for the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (pricing for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid will be announced when it arrives later this year). But there's a welcome asterisk: The Ioniq Electric is eligible for rebates. In California, up to $10,000 in incentives are offered, which would reduce the cost to $20,335.

Then there's the way the 2017 Ioniq Electric drives. In this sense, the Ioniq EV is similar to any other all-electric vehicle. It has instantaneous power response, making it quick off the line and acceptable when passing at speed. It's smooth and silent. So silent that at low speeds it emits a warble-like sound to alert pedestrians of your presence. When backing up it beeps, not unlike a delivery truck.

Hyundai aimed to inject engaging manners into the Ioniq, and while it can be fun to silently and swiftly blast away from others at a stop light, this compact hatchback isn't all that adept at carving corners. Push it and the tires protest, because the low rolling resistance rubber prioritizes efficiency over grip.
More satisfying is the engagement that comes via two paddles on the side of the steering wheel column though their role is far different from sequentially shifting up or down gears. Instead, these levers vary the level of regenerative braking.

New-gen re-gen
The Ioniq Electric has four levels of regen braking in all. Starting with 0, it feels like a normal car, in which ordinary rolling resistance will eventually slow car. That resistance ramps up, with 1 being not all that intrusive, 2 being quite noticeable, and 3 definitely apparent. At level 3, as soon as you lift your foot off the accelerator, the car slows significantly, nearly to a stop with enough distance. This kinetic recovery helps recharge the battery and thereby extend the vehicle's range.

Using the paddles in the Ioniq Electric proved surprisingly gratifying, both in more dynamic driving and simply around town. In the former, it was useful for imitating engaging a lower gear to use engine braking as a way to slow the car around a bend or down a steep hill. In stop and go city driving, it enabled me to brake less. Time a signal right, and you can slow the car enough via the regen without ever touching the brake pedal. There's also something inherently gratifying knowing that otherwise-wasted brake energy is juicing the battery.

Using the paddles in such a manner can seem foreign at first, but I quickly caught on. After two days of driving the 2017 Ioniq Electric, it almost became second nature.

Programmable feature
If you don't want this extra interaction, it isn't necessary. Once you find a regen level you like, you can keep it there. And through the central display screen, you can even customize and set the level according to each drive mode. For example, if you want Level 1 as standard in normal driving mode, Level 2 in Eco and Level 3 in Sport mode, you can make it so after pressing the "EV" button and then using the touch screen to enter your preferences. While there, you can also customize the climate control settings for each mode, from standard to eco.

There's no doubt the Ioniq Electric faces a stiff rival in the Chevrolet Bolt EV that boasts a range of 238 miles to the Ioniq's 124, but along with a roomier cabin, lower starting price and arguably sleeker design, the Ioniq Electric's ingenious use of paddles and customizability warrant a look.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 21, 2017 – In celebration of Earth Day 2017, Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell drivers have again surpassed an important threshold, accumulating more than two million miles on the roads and highways of both Southern and Northern California. These fuel cell CUVs have emitted only clean water vapor, and by so doing, have replaced approximately 760 tons of CO2 emissions that would have been emitted by vehicles of similar size and capability. Hyundai has delivered more than 140 Tucson Fuel Cell crossovers since its introduction as the first mass-produced fuel cell in the U.S. market in 2014.

Hyundai service engineers, with permission from vehicle owners, receive periodic mileage updates from Tucson Fuel Cell vehicles in Southern California, allowing them to calculate cumulative mileage totals as needed to assess fuel cell stack maintenance status.

TUCSON FUEL CELL ADVANTAGESThe Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell CUV has a number of advantages over some other alternative fuels. The energy-rich hydrogen fuel provides an estimated driving range of 265 miles between fill-ups, similar to many gasoline vehicles. The Blue Link Agent for the Google Assistant allows control of various functions of a Hyundai vehicle with simple voice commands. These commands can include “Ok Google, Tell Blue Link to start my Santa Fe and set the temperature to 82 degrees, “Ok Google, Tell Blue Link to send the address of the Empire State Building to my Sonata”, and “Ok Google, ask Blue Link to unlock my car”.

Blue Link Connected Care, Remote and Guidance Packages Free for Three Years

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 13, 2017 – Remote door lock, Remote Start with Climate Control and the Monthly Vehicle Health Report are among the Blue Link services Hyundai Motor America will make standard via smartphone, smartwatch and Amazon Alexa for three years.

Hyundai Motor America announced the updated standard services packages for Blue Link-equipped 2018 Hyundai vehicles and 2017 IONIQ models. The rollout of the standard services will begin with the launch of the 2018 Elantra GT, Santa Fe Sport and redesigned 2018 Sonata models. The redesigned 2018 Sonata debuted at the New York International Auto Show today. In addition, Hyundai has also enhanced the Blue Link Remote Start with Climate Control feature to include control of the rear defroster and heated side mirrors for 2018 Elantra GT and Sonata.

“Remote start has always been our most popular remote service,” said Manish Mehrotra, director, digital business planning and connected operations, Hyundai Motor America. “Hyundai owners request more than one million remote starts a month during the winter and perform more than a million remote locks annually. Our customers love to be connected, so improving their value and overall experience at no additional cost maintains our commitment to do better.”

Hyundai is going above and beyond the competition by making key Blue Link safety and security features like Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Assistance and Stolen Vehicle Recovery standard to subscribers. These important features include immediate access to the Blue Link Emergency Response Center in the event of an accident, faster connection to emergency services and 24/7, 365 days/year access to emergency assistance via the dedicated SOS button. Blue Link can also assist the police in locating and recovering an owner’s stolen car.

In addition to making the current features standard, Hyundai will tackle the inconvenience of outdated map software by offering free downloads to maintain up-to-date navigation programming on the system’s SD card via the MyHyundai website. The complimentary updates also will be available for three years as part of the Guidance Package.

Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert Now Standard Equipment

NEW YORK, April 12, 2017 –The redesigned 2018 Sonata enters the market with a new look from the front, side and rear thanks to a “cascading grill,” a more assertive profile and an entirely new rear; showcasing a clean and handsome approach with reimagined, slim taillights.

“It’s all about making an impact,” said Chris Chapman, chief designer, Hyundai North American Design Center. “We wanted to deliver an exciting expressive car to our customers and show the world how passionate Hyundai is about design and craftsmanship. The objective was to make an impact, this design provides the visual excitement and unique identity our customers associate with Sonata.”

Created at Hyundai’s California Design Studio with American aesthetic tastes in mind, the new Sonata is bold, daring and beautiful. The 2018 Sonata made its North American debut today at the New York International Auto Show.

ELEVATED ELEGANCE
Supplementing the bodywork, the 2018 Sonata now lights the way with LED daytime running lights. When night falls, available LED headlamps with dynamic bending light illuminate the path and add to Sonata’s already radiant posture. The same standout style continues in the rear with sharp taillight design and enlarged Hyundai badge, which now cleverly houses the trunk release button. Chrome accents surround the daylight opening (DLO) and fresh wheel designs cap off its new look.

Inside, the renewed center stack and instrument panel echo the exterior’s catching new looks. The trend carries down to gauge dial design and a strong three-spoke steering wheel. Piano key buttons for audio and HVAC controls give a premium look and touch.

“The moment the pen left the drafting paper I knew we had something special in this re-imagined Sonata,” says Chapman, “Dynamic lines, strong graphics, and our new signature cascading grille come together in an athletic way.”

BEAUTY BENEATH THE SKIN
The new Sonata has a refined chassis with improved ride and handling. To achieve this feat, talented engineers increased the torsion bar stiffness within the steering system by 12 percent, which improves steering response and feel in all conditions. They then enhanced that improvement further with new steering calibration, focusing on responsiveness and on-center steering feel. Previous ratings for ride, handling and NVH showed customers were quite satisfied, so engineers just reset an already high bar.

In addition to these steering changes, the Sonata received an updated rear suspension. The trailing arms are 21 percent thicker, making them stiffer and better able to manage heavy suspension loads. New bushings work with the new suspension arms to allow for more ride compliance and yet quicken response time to control all other wheel motions. The result is a communicative, nimble and comfortable sedan.

For the top-of-the-line powertrain, there’s even more. The 245 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine now includes an eight-speed automatic transmission, which adds ratio range at both the top and bottom of output speeds. The eight-speed allows for extra thrust off-the-line and a quieter, more fuel-efficient dash down the interstate. The 2.0-liter turbo models roll on 18-inch wheels, now with Michelin tires.

COMPELLING COMFORT AND SAFETY
The 2018 Sonata features a standard seven-inch color display audio touchscreen with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® integration. Speaking of smartphones, driver and passenger alike can keep them charged without a plug using the available Qi standard wireless charging pad. Sonata now adds a second row USB charge port, a nod to today’s connected rear-seat passengers. Available navigation systems now come with a bird’s eye view feature as well as traffic flow and incident data, without ever having to pay a subscription for the service.

The Sonata offers more safety features in 2018. In addition to seven standard airbags (dual front, side, and curtain, as well as driver’s knee) and a battery of safety systems (VSM, ESC, TCS, ABS, EBD, BA, and TPMS) comes Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA). The Sonata is the only Midsize car sold with this safety technology as standard equipment. Despite drivers spending a tiny amount of time in reverse, one-quarter of all accidents happen when someone is backing up. BSD with RCTA gives drivers peace of mind that the road behind them is clear. Furthermore, there’s also a new Lane Departure Warning system with an enhanced Lane Keep Assist function available.

Hyundai looks to Millenials with its Ioniq

Hyundai is looking to a new generation of car buyers as it rolls out a trio of powertrains under the same eco-friendly banner.

That vehicle, the Ioniq, was on display Friday during a press event at the company’s Hyundai America Technical Center headquarters in Washtenaw County’s Superior Township.The Ioniq comes in three flavors of electric – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric – and the company is touting the car’s green credentials, which it expects to appeal to changing generational tastes.

“Ioniq will attract an entirely new group of eco- and efficiency-oriented buyers in the U.S. market,” according to Mike O’Brien, vice president of Corporate and Product Planning for Hyundai Motor America.

By 2020, sales to Millenials will account for 40 percent of new vehicle sales, which is key because, according to the company, Millenials indicate a “higher preference for — and are more likely to consider — purchase of an alternative powertrain vehicle.”

That openness reflects a “societal sea change” that the company expects to “transform the automotive marketplace.” That transformation is expected to include more urban living and a preference for vehicles with technology that can keep people connected.

Those predictions come at a time when consumer tastes have shifted more toward trucks and SUVs, but the company is looking toward a future when the Millenial generation dominates the marketplace.
O’Brien indicated other factors will influence the marketplace in the short term.

Whether or not the Trump administration relaxes fuel economy standards will not be an issue for automakers until after 2021. That — and requirements in California and several other states for so-called zero-emission vehicles — mean electric vehicles will continue to have a place.

But customers have to want to buy the cars, O’Brien said, noting that the company tried to make the compact Ioniq drive like a standard vehicle, one that is touted as the first on the market to offer three powertrains on one dedicated platform.

Here are a few details on the three versions:

The Hybrid model, at 58 miles per gallon combined, has the highest mileage rating of "any non-plug-in vehicle sold in the U.S. market.”

The Ioniq plug-in hybrid promises an all-electric range of more than 27 miles. And the Ioniq Electric’s lithium-ion polymer battery touts a driving range of 124 miles.

The Ioniq Hybrid and the plug-in Hybrid use a dual-clutch transmission to engage the driver for a “spirited and fun-to-drive character,” according to the company. The vehicles also offer sport and eco modes.

Appealing to the green car segment, the Ioniq "uses eco-focused interior design materials," including bio-fabrics and recycled plastics with sugar cane and volcanic rock derivatives.

The Hybrid is available now, the Electric will roll out first in California this month and the Plug-in Hybrid is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year. Pricing on the hybrid starts at $22,200 and the Electric at $29,500 before the $7,500 federal tax credit. Pricing is not yet available on the Plug-in Hybrid.
