I find the new rules stinks, it affects the honest droppers, the genuine people that rely and believe in their system to generate traffic.

Money is the root of all evil
Spammers join Entrecard not for traffic but to earn money, they use and abuse Entrecard for financial gain -- maybe if Entrecard will remove the money value of EC that will eliminate the problem, i know it's so easy to say but many will not agree with me because there are some that are genuine droppers that are enjoying the little amount that they earned for selling credits but sometimes we need to sacrifice something isn't it traffic is the main purpose of Entrecard?

Cause and Effect
Cause - Eliminate the cause of the problem; The amount valued on each EC causes spammers to create many dummy blog and entrecard account for financial gain...the result SPAM the system.

Effect - Then, Entrecard thinks of best way to deal with the spammers is to limit the drops per IP to 600ec a day, ouch!

Two head better than one
Okay in this case they might be more that one, but If Entrecard asked for some suggestion before implementing the new rule this might end up a better and good system than 600ec per ip.

We are not sure if this is going to change yet after some bloggers commenting and dis-agree with this new implementation but as per phirate:

We will not be changing this policy, it was a necessary change as the result of a number of users creating large numbers of inactive blogs then dropping 300 for each in order to "earn" credits.

All of us who genuinely use Entrecard to gain traffic and not for financial gain will feel the pain of limitations, not enough freedom to promoting our site.

Options
The only option for those that genuinely use Entrecard for traffic and have more than 2 site in their ip address is to think of which blog do you want to prioritize and sacrifice the other blog, this is big sacrifice if you ask me or alternate the site to promote each day, all we have to do is make an adjustment in our part, forget about this 600ec per ip and move on, big sigh!.

What about you? have you noticed the new rules? do you feel the pain of less freedom? or you just want to move on and see what happens next hoping it will benefit us.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/djEH/~3/9ZJrwzDe98k/do-you-feel-limit-600ec-per-ip.html" title="Do you feel the limit? How can Entrecard actually expect to sell any when they are selling 1000 for $9.50? Have they sold any? I would like anyone who has bought any from Entrecard for $9.50 to expose themselves. All those sites that are selling Entrecard credits, Have you sold any and at what price?

The true value might be $9.50, Maybe Graham (Entrecard founder) should ban the sale of EC to protect his investment, The more people in this community that sell EC, the less value it has.

I believe that Entrecard credit is used for advertising purposes, Not for monetary gain. Afterall Entrecard is supposed to be about promoting your blog. Obviously US$2 is alot of money in some currencies, but does it pay for your internet connection? Or the internet cafe assuming you can sell 1000ec everyday, And if you can sell 1000 everyday, how much of that is actually profit? I guess im just interested to find out how many people think that the Entrecard credit is making them money?

Maximize Traffic With Ten SEO Power Tips

How do you know what type of content is really going to attract the right searchers? In this article I wanted to cover a few very basic tips that you can keep in mind when building high-performance strategies. Remember that good search engine marketing is not about trying to manipulate or “fool the search engines.” Good SEO skills are more about creating genuine relevancy for well-written content that deserves to be found because it is truly the most relevant and useful to your audience of readers.

What students quickly discover in the 5-Day classes is that the optimization skills are not nearly as hard as many people make them out to be (even for the most competitive phrases,) once you’ve been trained and understand the full scope of influences that are at work. The biggest advantage that we have had is all about the “accuracy of information.”

1. Write content that your audience is already looking for within the last 90 days.

True keyword research is not about “guessing at keywords” but its all about researching actual data. How are your SEO research skills using Wordtracker or Keyword Discovery? At the SEO Workshops we teach much more than the traditional “keyword research” methods. We help students learn “Keyword Forensics” and how to quickly tap into the hidden niche trends that 99% of most Webmasters never even notice.

2. Does your Web copy speak to the reader or does it speak about yourself?

Remember that your Web site should be focused on your audience first and appeal specifically to a niche interest. When writing your Web copy, you need to dialog in an appropriate tone and format for the right audience. Some of the most interesting content will have more appeal if it speaks to your audience in terms of “you.” You can, you might, you will, yours, your and youâ€TMre INSTEAD of we, ours, weâ€TMre, we will, we can, etc.

3. Focus on writing for the human audience first and search engines second.

While search engine optimization is important to your visibility, try writing your content first. Most people donâ€TMt write their best when trying to optimize and create content at the same time. Focus on creating highly useful content that is extremely focused on one topic per page. Once you have completed your writing so that you are pleased with it, then go in to do a mild re-write for the search engines.

4. Tips for triggering idea generation and giving your strategies a unique twist.

While many people seem to spend time exploring their competitor’s Web sites, we encourage you to lead the way with new ideas. Try not to be obsessed with what the competition is doing, but be creative and start your own new trends. Spend just a little more time working on your projects this week than you did last week. Setting yourself apart from the competition is easier than you might think and gives you a huge advantage over others.

5. Creating your content so that it “speaks” to a specific audience of visitors.

Think of how your Web copy reads and ensure the dialog flows smoothly. Read your work out loud and see if you can improve the tone of your message With natural expression. Keep your specific audience in mind. How you write for senior citizen (in tone and in format) may differ considerably from writing for an audience of for example “new parents.” Always ask yourself “what is important to these readers?” Rely on researching accurate data to eliminate guess work.

6. Remember strong calls to action

Without a firm call to action, donâ€TMt expect the reader to naturally guess at what you want them to do next. Plain ordinary dialog that asks the reader to take the next action will usually work best. Dialog that is written for voice (similar to the way a broadcaster writes to project their personality.)

7. Build your search engine optimization skills in the beginning with the “stress free” approach.

If you are new to SEO, you may want to focus on the long tailed niche phrases since most searchers are doing fairly descriptive and intelligent searches these days. Ideally You want to attract those who already know what they are looking for and just need to find your pages more easily. With practice and the right training you can go after highly competitive phrases too but youâ€TMll find that the best conversions nearly always come from the niches. Also remember that it is the basic SEO skills that carry you through and must come before any of the advanced strategies. The result will be stable top rankings that stand the test of time with minimal fuss.

8. Give your readers a non-threatening reason to respond right now.

What is the objective for your page and does your Web copy work effectively at fulfilling that objective? It may not always be about trying to sell a product or a service. It should not be about fulfilling your needs first but it should be about meeting the needs of why that searcher first conducted a search. Meet their needs and deliver up something that satisfies their search first and then give the visitor a non-threatening reason why they might respond to you. Do you want their e-mail address? or do you just want them to pick up the phone and call? Never lose sight of the fact that the Web is a marvelous two way interactive experience, if you want it to be. Make your Web site a vehicle for relationship building and remember that many readers may actually have the desire to interact and participate through Blogs or other “User Generated activity.” Give your visitors something that involves their participation.

9. Remember that your readers always want to feel like they are in control of their Web experience.

People often use the Web for researching topics of interest or doing preliminary price comparisons or for looking up information. While most people explore the Web for their own purposes, the more that you put them in control of their experience the better. If appropriate, you may want to consider adding addition tools or functionality to your Web site in order to enhance its usability for your specific audience.

10. Did you know that if you write your content so that it naturally “reads very well.”

You will naturally gain some bonus for having created content of quality. By this, I mean content…that reads well to a human being. Don’t stuff keywords all over the place. Instead, use moderation in everything you do. One of the things you need to understand is that “theme based” search engines like Google, are actually using a measure of artificial intelligence (AI) to measure how well your article “reads” based on all of the overall context of your body text (other than the keywords) based on data that a search engine has gathered concerning a specific topic. This is great news for writers because if you are making a transition to writing for the web, you’ll find some search engines are literally rewarding pages that are “well written.”

For the small business owner or especially those who are starting-up, getting the right employees to join your venture is imperative. Your employees may break or make your business. The very word selection implies the choice of the one best –qualified individual from among a number of available qualified candidates. Hence, there should be a relatively large number of job applicants from which the final candidates are chosen.

There are several reasons why employees must be well selected. Here are the 7 most important reasons:

1. Your business goals and objectives are better achieved by the employees you properly selected for a particular job.

2. An incompetent employee is a liability to your business, an additional expense, or a burden. Proper care should be made in getting the right person with the right competence for the job.

3. Personnel requirements vary from job to job. Meaning, the right employee for the right job. There can be no general requirements.

4. People have varying degrees of intelligence, aptitudes and abilities. Hence, fit the square peg on the square hole not on the round one, so to speak.

5. Labor Laws protect employee, making it difficult to fire incompetent and problem employees. Hiring is always easier than firing because of the laws governing termination of employment. In some states and countries, ‘firing-at-will’ seems to be a norm, in others, it is illegal.

6. Individuals have different interests, goals, and objectives in life. Select somebody whose goals closely align to you business goals.

7. Careless hiring is costly and can cause problems to the company. The hiring process cost you the money for the advertisement, cost for testing, and time for those who made the interviews. More so, in the long run as pointed out earlier, a wrong hire can cost you more in your operations.

Make money and generate traffic from your blog

Why PerformancingAds?

* We have years of experience buying and selling ads
* Fully-automated, self-serve ad system
* The largest 125x125 ad marketplace on the planet
* Automatically get paid at the end of the same month you earn your money
* Book your own ads... for free
* Built by publishers, for publishers

* PUBLISHERS
* ADVERTISERS
* MARKETPLACE

Make money and generate traffic from your blog
Why PerformancingAds?

* We have years of experience buying and selling ads
* Fully-automated, self-serve ad system
* The largest 125x125 ad marketplace on the planet
* Automatically get paid at the end of the same month you earn your money
* Book your own ads... for free
* Built by publishers, for publishers

Traffic Exchange

* Earn credits when advertisements are booked in your regions
* Use those earned credits to have your own exchange ad displayed on other publisher sites

PerformancingAds Premium: Direct Ad Sales from Performancing

If you are a publisher whose website receives over 250,000 US pageviews per month PerformancingAds may be able to offer you direct ad sales representation for your 728x90, 300x250 and 160x600 ad spots.

We have established relationships with brand advertisers and are able to leverage our network of sites to get high-value ad deals. TELLING STORIES

Don't just stick a bunch of links or photos on your blog. People love to have a story read or told to them. Think back to when you were a child. There was nothing better than to have a bed time story read to you. It's still the same thing. Adults love to hear a good story. It takes their mind off of there own life or problems. Unless you are some big shot reporter, people wont keep coming back to hear what you have to say. Make stories compelling, and, most of all, relatable.

2. CREATE A VOICE FOR YOURSELF

This has everything to do with Branding (which by the way is a huge topic within itself). Find your voice and brand it, whether it's through writing about one particular topic within your expertise such as (travel, dog walking, cooking, etc..) or about several different related topics. People are more likely to remember your blog if it offers something unique.

3. MAKE IT EASY TO READ

That means keeping your visual aesthetics simple. Using bold. or italicized words help draw the eye to a particular point that you want to make. Just don't use bold or italics excessively. You will lose your effect and momentum. Keep your sentences short and concise. Use two spaces between sentences. Nothing is harder on the eyes than excessive writing in bold letters, and runon sentences. OUCH!

4. GIVE YOUR BLOG A PERSONAL TOUCH

It is a lot easier to connect with people on an emotional level if you show a personal side to your writing, rather than some mechanical automated web page. Remember story telling? Let visitors know what's up with you, and how it relates to your topic of conversation. Emotions sell!

5. PRETEND THAT YOU ARE WRITING AN EMAIL, OR LETTER TO A FRIEND

Forget that you are writing an article. Think about when you are writing to your friend by email, or a snail mail letter, and you have some cool information to tell them. Do you address the letter formally as you would a future contact at a large organization, or is the email a lot cozier? Keep it light and watch your viewership rise.

6. PROVIDE ENOUGH INFORMATION

The number one thing that your visitors are looking for is information. Don't let them down. Keep the information simple, and restrict it to the topic that you have chosen for your headline. See # 7.

7. INCLUDE A HEADLINE

Headlines SELL, and it is the #1 way to capture your audience, to continue reading your blog. Spending a lot of time on your headline will pay you back in spades. You can start by checking out top magazines, and newspapers. Save the front page of these publications and put them into a file for further use when you are ready to write your headline. Use these headlines, but change it a little to match your article.

8. GIVE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Does your expertise lend itself to teaching your visitors about a certain subject (How to do "anything")? People love instructions. This will let your visitors know that you are the expertise in your topic, and hopefully they will want to learn more through education. Educate them, and prosper.

9. REVIEW A PRODUCT OR SERVICE

Don't really have anything to sell? No problem. Write about someone else's product or service, and collect an affiliate income. Write with passion and consistency. People are only going to read if you are passionate about it. Affiliate income is big business, and blogging for income is a great way to make it happen.

10. EDUCATE YOURSELF

Thats Right! If you want to learn "How to Make Money on Your Blog", continue reading, researching, learning, educate yourself. It is the only way to make things happen. Knowledge is irreplaceable. Once you have it, nothing can stop you. Join groups, read other blogs, pay for lessons. Do what you have to do to make it happen.

SIX-6 Easy steps to increase Blog Traffic

Publish good content, fill your blog with spesific theme that will catch people to read and come over and over again.
1 "X-change visit" by visiting another blog and ask the blog owner to visit back to your blog.
2 "link X-change" - add link to larger blog and another blog which has same topic with yours.
3 Join forum and expose your blog. There are so many forum available on the internet, join interesting forum and add your blog-link every time your post a thread or just reply another post in a forum.

4 Use tags - tagging posts with descriptive words that describe the post's content in a clear, concise manner you make it easier for your readers to find the content they're looking for and maybe even return to your blog in the future.
5 Include images. Blogs that contain line after line of text can be daunting to a new reader, so break up the monotony with photos, cartoons, diagrams or other images that relate to your blog's content - but remember not to flooding your blog with that image.
6 Track your blog's traffic. Blog add-ons like Sitemeter or other hit counter services allow bloggers to see who visits their page and where they came from.

How to remove nofollow tag on Blogger / Blogspot

This is an easy hack actually, and i’ve never thought to make a post about it. So thanks to some of this blog readers who has emailed me asked about how to remove the nofollow attribute on blogger or blogspot blog.

Nofollow is not a tag, it is an attribute actually. it is just kind of property of the links tag [ ] you can read more about this nofollow attribute here if you’re interested. but now, let’s begin the hacks />
You can follow all the steps below, and if it works for you, would you place our link on your blogroll? nah.. just kidding. place our link on your blogroll if you think this site is useful. if not, just forget it! />
putty?

download putty disini
http://www.putty.org/

Pertama kita buka PuTTY

masukan alamat ssh/ip yg mau kita remote...liat seperti di gambar

Kemudian pilih bagian Connection » SSH » Tunnels.

source

http://blog.matriphe.com/index.php/2007/01/19/browsing-via-ssh-tunneling

Your-Freedom

lama ga ngeblog It doesn’t have one. Unfortunately, because of the way it’s configured to run out of the box it *looks* like it has one.

Follow these simple steps to get your Firefox memory usage under control.
These configuration changes are a trade-off between internet browsing speed and memory usage. They are most useful if you are multitasking and need Firefox to be less of a memory hog while using other applications

#1: about:config

Type “about:config” into your address bar to access the hidden configuration options for Firefox.

#2: browser.cache.memory.capacity

Controls how much memory is used to cache pages.

Right click on the page and choose New then Integer and create an integer called browser.cache.memory.capacity and set it to a low number. This controls how many kilobytes of memory are used for the browser’s cache.

#3: browser.cache.disk.capacity

Controls how much disk space is used to cache pages in kilobytes.

Set browser.cache.disk.capacity to between 5000 or 15000.

128MB to 512M -> 5000.
512BM to 1GB of RAM -> use 15000

#4: config.trim_on_minimize (optional)

Configure Firefox to swap memory to disk when minimized. This will make Firefox less responsive if you minimize/maximize a lot, but it is good if you need to free memory while multi-tasking to other applications.

Right click on the page and choose New then Boolean and create a boolean called config.trim_on_minimize and set it to true. Now when you minimize the window it will free up memory.

#5: network.prefetch-next

Network link prefetch will download all pages with the rel=”prefetch” tag. This uses up more memory than you would otherwise think.

Set network.prefetch-next to false.

#6: browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers

This controls how many pages of history are kept in the back/forward buttons. There are well defined terms of service to strictly adhere to when participating in the program.

On my visit through sites and forums, I daily notice several instances of misuse of Adsense ads. So here a few helpful Google Adsense tips, probably many you already know, and few you might gain by knowing now. These adsense faq are all picked from the Program Policies, Terms and Conditions and FAQ itself and presented in a simplified manner.

1. Never click your own adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason. You know this one very well. This is a surefire way to close you Adsense account. Never tell your office associates or friends to click on them. Keep a check if your family or children are busy increasing your income by clicking your ads and indirectly trying to stop your income. Dont even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Adsense is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. Check the ads which appear on your pages by the Google Preview tool if required.

2. Never change the Adsense code. There are enough means of adsense optimization & customizations available to change the colour, background or border to suit your needs. Do whatever you want to do outside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do. The search code has more limitations to colour and placement, but you should adhere to the rules. The code may stop working and violates the TOS.

3. Do not place more than 3 ad units and 3 ad links or 2 adsense search boxes on any web page. Anyway, ads will not appear in those units even if you place more ad units. But this is the limit they set, so it is better to stick to it.

4. Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google Adsense competition in their field. Never try to create link structures resembling the adsense ads. Never use other competitive search tools on the same pages which have Adsense powered Google search. They do allow affiliate or limited-text links. Update: Google has allowed you to run contextual advertising like Yahoo ads, Chitika etc provided the ads do not resemble Adsense ads.

5. Do not disclose confidential information about your account like the CTR, CPM and income derived via individual ad units or any other confidential information they may reveal to you. However, you may reveal the total money you make as per recent updates to the TOS.

6. Label headings as “sponsored links” or “advertisements” only. Other labels are not allowed. I have seen many sites label ads with other titles. Dont make your site a target in a few seconds gaze.

7. Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default. Adsense ads should open on the same page. You may be using a base target tag to open all links in a new window or frame by default. Correct it now as they do not want new pages opening from clicked ads.

8. One Account suffices for Multiple websites. You do not need to create 5 accounts for 5 different websites. One account will do. If you live in the fear that if one account is closed down for violation of TOS, believe me they will close all accounts when they find out. You can keep track of clicks by using channels with real time statistics. They will automatically detect the new site and display relevant ads.

9. Place ads only on Content Pages. Advertisers pay only for content based ads. Content drives relevant ads. Although you might manage some clicks from error, login, registration, “thank you” or welcome pages, parking pages or pop ups, it will get you out of the program.

10. Do not mask ad elements. Alteration of colours and border is a facility to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. I have seen many sites where the url part is of the same colour as the background. While blending the ad with your site is a good idea, hiding relevant components of the ads is not allowed. Also do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.

11. Do not send your ads by email. Html formatted emails look good and allow placement of these javascript ads. But it is not allowed as per TOS. You do not want impressions registering on their logs from any email even once. They are watching!

12. Keep track of your content. So Adsense is not allowed on several non content pages. But it is also not allowed on several content pages too. Do not add it on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results. Also exclude any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content.

13. Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches - Ensure you are not in any way altering the site which the user reaches to after clicking the ads. Do not frame, minimize, remove, redirect or otherwise inhibit the full and complete display of any Advertiser Page or Search Results Page after the user clicks on any Ad or Search results.

14. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing - Although the definition of ‘excessive’ is a gray area and is subject to discretion, yet Google adsense with correct placement, focused content and high traffic will get you much more income than other programs, so excessive advertising is not required. Keyword stuffing does target better focused ads, but overdoing it is not required.

15. Ensure you Language is Supported - Adsense supports “Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish”. In addition, AdSense for search is available in Czech, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. If your web pages language is not supported, do not use the code on such pages.

Update:
16. Maximum 2 referral button per product per page - With the launch of the google adsense referral program, you are allowed to put only 2 referral buttons for adsense referral, adwords referral, Google pack and Firefox with google toolbar referral.

17. Do not specify Google ads as your alternate ads. - Several services like Chitika eminimalls allow you to place alternate urls, when a targeted paying ad cannot be displayed. This involved creating an simple html page and putting the ad to be displayed instead. Even Adsense allows an alternate url feature instead of displaying public service ads. But never use Adsense ads as alternate urls.

18. Do not confuse with adjacent images - It was a common policy to increase CTR by placing same number of images as the number of text ads, which falsely gave the impression that the text ads represented an explanation to these images. Inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads is not allowed. Make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors.

Mau beli laptop?

DISCLAIMER:

- tidak ada penyebutan merk ataupun perkiraan harga laptop mendetail. saya kan bukan duta laptop

Dominate the Blogosphere the Wired Way

While I was in the Detroit airport earlier this week, I picked up a copy of the current issue of Wired. August's issue focused on a series of "How To's", one of them being "How to Rule the Blogosphere." I was interested in reading what tips they had to offer, only to find out that their "Get a Boost in the Blogosphere" advice pertained to getting a popular comment on Digg or Slashdot. Wired's advice consisted of the following:

* Be the first to comment. I can't argue with this one. I don't even know why people bother commenting on Digg stories if there are already over 50 comments--I don't know about you, but I never bother to click through to read "51 of XX" comments. I'd go further and say you want to try and make comments rather than replies on Digg, seeing as how their new stupid comment system hides responses and requires you to click in order to display them. Before the new comment system was enabled, responses to comments typically got the most thumbs because they weren't threaded; however, now that responses aren't nearly as visible, original comments are more popular because they're more visible.
* Be clever/witty/funny. I'm not sure how well this advice helps people. You're either a clever, witty, funny person or you're not. I've seen plenty of comments by people who were the first to comment, but they got buried because they lack a funny bone.
* Understand your audience. I read this blurb and chuckled: "Digg and Slashdot readers fancy themselves more sophisticated than the meatheads who tormented them in high school." This may be true, but it's like saying you'd rather eat a turd sandwich than a snot popsicle. Just because they're more "sophisticated" than jocks, bullies, and lunkheads doesn't mean they'll be sitting down to polish their monocles and enjoy afternoon tea any time soon (as indicated by the rampant "I'd do Jessica Alba" and "Women belong in the kitchen" comments that get upmodded like crazy). Don't get too clever here; after all, you are dealing with adolescent young males.
* Provide more information about the topic. I've seen this work well in comments, but as Matt mentioned in a Whiteboard Friday Video about Digg tips, you don't want to just drop a link to your site, even if it may be relevant. Include a few links that provide more information, and be careful not to cross-link to a similar story in the Upcoming section.

I did come across a Wired How To that actually did pertain to blogging: How to Make Your Blog Popular. Technorati's David L. Sifry provided a list of five tips to help your blog crack the Technorati Top 100:

* React quickly. I'd argue that this isn't necessarily crucial. You don't have to be the one to provide breaking news all the time if your coverage is unique and has an original angle/spin to it.
* Make your posts readable. This is basic (but good) advice. Wired goes on to add that putting your key points in boldface (hey, like I'm doing) is helpful. We've discussed plenty of times in previous blog posts that it's a good idea to break up text by using images, bullet points, numbered lists, concise paragraphs, charts, graphs, etc.
* Link out. I can't argue with this one. Links help your readers, fluff other bloggers' egos, and attract traffic. Good times for all!
* Keep SEO in mind. This point surprised me. David recommends putting your blog's name in the URL and in the title tag, and to tag your blog with appropriate keywords in Technorati. Basic advice, I know, but I suppose it's a start.
* Post often. Again, basic advice, but it's good advice nonetheless. Obviously, you can't expect to have a kick-ass blog if you only post once in a blue moon.

Overall, I thought Wired's blogging how to's weren't really that in-depth, which was disappointing. What kind of a How To has five one-sentence tips? I know I'm giving them a hard time, but although their advice was incredibly brief and very 101, I suppose it's still nice to see Wired offer any sort of advice/coverage about how to be a better blogger, especially if it mentions optimizing your blog for search engines. Of course, if you really want a more in-depth How To for bad-assing your blog, might I recommend a certain stellar blog's 21 Tactics to Increase Blog Traffic post? I hear the author of this piece knows a thing or two about blogging...

How to Take Advantage of the Coming Web 2.0 Crash

Every single person working in the media today who experienced the dot-com bubble in 1999 to 2000 believes that we are going through the exact same process and can expect the exact same results—a bust. It's déjà vu all over again.... I can assure you that after this next collapse, nobody will think of the dot-com bubble as anything other than a prelude.

I'm actually in a camp that disagrees with most of what Mr. Dvorak has to say (like Marshall), but I'll play along. Let's say the bubble is only a year or two away from bursting and imagine how that hypothetical world would function.

STEP 1: Investors Flee from Public Internet Stocks
This is typically the first step - some bad news comes out of Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft, IAC & Amazon all in the same few week span and stock market traders start selling shares at losses like it's going out of style. Remember how the stock market works, though - no one's bidding on what they think the value of a stock is, nor are they bidding on what they think others think it's worth. The stock market prices shares based on what other investors think other investors think (yes, you read that right). It's all about the opinions of the opinions of others - hence the Random Walk theory.

STEP 2: Private Investors & Venture Capital Gets Squeemish
With the possibility for massive valuations from a public offering diminished, private money retreats into hiding. This, combined with the Wall St. losses create -

STEP 3: Investment, Marketing, R&D and Overall Growth Screech to a Halt
When money starts drying up externally, companies of all kinds freeze spending, start layoffs and kill development projects. In the last dot-com crash, we saw plenty of irrational spending freezes - freezes even on those spends that had a positive ROI - simply because management didn't want the association with the doomed "Internet sector."

STEP 4: Eveyone Goes Out of Business
This is the part I hate. Companies large and small declare huge losses and, often, Chapter 11. Why? Because all of that development they've done and all of those products and service they provide suddenly aren't doing much of anything because none of the other companies are buying. The irony is - the stock market and the private investors will hold up the companies' failures and closures as evidence for why their withdrawal of money (up in Step 1 & 2) were wise moves, when, in fact, they were the catalysts for the events, not the fortune tellers they'll claim to be.

STEP 5: Enterpreneurs Start from Scratch
All those scrappy, smart, out-of-work programmers and biz-dev leaders will pout for a few months, then eventually find a job, oftentimes in startup environments with little to no capital. Over time they'll produce the next Google/YouTube/Facebook, investors will come flocking back and the cycle of boom will begin anew.

Here's what doesn't happen during the above process:

*
Users don't stop searching the web for products, services & information
*
Said users don't stop clicking search ads
*
They don't stop being influenced by online branding
*
They don't stop buying (unless the macro-economy has gone to hell at the same time, but even then, many of them will still be buying)

Remember when Frankie told us that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself?" Truer words were never spoken - and they're just as relevant to the dot-com collapse as they were to the stock market crash. But, if there's nothing we can do to stop investor pessimism, at least we can profit from it.

So, now that we know what's coming, how do we take advantage of it?

1.
Build a Rainy Day Investment Fund - you'll need to have some cash to keep going through potentially tough times, but if you can spend while others have to save, you'll be in beautiful shape.
2.
Operate Properties in Multiple Spheres - consulting is a great gig while times are good, but a downturn can mean a lot of irrational halting of expenditures, so make sure you've got some pre-determined business ideas into which you can invest yourself.
3.
Select Sectors with Immunity - In the offline economy, alcohol and funeral homes are good examples of businesses with cyclical immunity. The online world has plenty, too - ecommerce (remember that no one stops buying online just because investors think Internet stocks are a poor choice), adult content, news, luxury goods - these are all consumed with little regard to the economic perception of the web.
4.
Spend When Others Slack - If the ad market on the web suddenly dries up (as it did last crash), you can sweep in and grab a lot of very juicy ads at far below market value, and get a massive ROI on them.
5.
Release Positive News - The media will want to harp on the downturn for a while, but they'll also be looking to temper that with good news, so if you can make your business stand out during a slow period, you've got a great chance to be in the press.
6.
Gobble Up Competitors - If memory serves, acquiring Internet properties in 2002 was like taking candy from a baby. Get ready for that market again by keeping your eye on companies and sites with real value who might have overextended themselves but have great potential to rise again.

I'm sure you've got more tips for how to prosper in a downturned market - please do share. If Dvorak's right, at least we'll know what to do when the Silicon Valley party goes to bed.

Matt Cutts on Nofollow, Links-Per-Page and the Value of Directories

and I have a beautiful relationship - I relentlessly pester him and he gives me answers to questions that are pestering webmasters. It's a cross between symbiotic and vampirical (vampiristic?). Thankfully, Matt has once again let me suck away some of his precious time to address some big issues. After this, I think I'll let him have a rest and probably go after poor Tim (his website is so lonely).

I've posted a list of six questions I asked Matt, 3 of which he answered (answers, or lack of answers, are in bold). This is followed by some discussion on these and other topics that warrant a mention, and may be serious news to many folks (they certainly were to me).

1. Why was John Chow's website (johnchow.com) penalized in the Google search results?
* A) John engaged in manipulative link acquisition (buying links, affiliate linking, etc)
* B) John's site consistently provided links to paying companies without using nofollow
* C) John's site engaged in other manipulative practices on-page – cloaking, keyword stuffing, etc.
* D) He said mean things about Google and we're soft-shelled here at the 'plex
* E) No answer provide by Matt
2. Does Google recommend the use of nofollow internally as a positive method for controlling the flow of internal link love?
* A) Yes – webmasters can feel free to use nofollow internally to help tell Googlebot which pages they want to receive link juice from other pages
_
(Matt's precise words were: The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. Plenty of other mechanisms would also work (e.g. a link through a page that is robot.txt'ed out), but nofollow on individual links is simpler for some folks to use. There's no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links; for Google, nofollow'ed links are dropped out of our link graph; we don't even use such links for discovery. By the way, the nofollow meta tag does that same thing, but at a page level.)
_
* B) Sometimes – we don't generally encourage this behavior, but if you're linking to user-generated content pages on your site who's content you may not trust, nofollow is a way to tell us that
* C) No – nofollow is intended to say "I don't editorially vouch for the source of this link." If you're placing un-trustworthy content on your site, that can hurt you whether you use nofollow to link to those pages or not.
3. If I have a website in Spanish that serves Spanish speakers in Mexico, Spain, Latin America & the United States, how does Google recommend that I tell them my content is relevant to searches in all of those countries?
* A) Host a single site in any country you want, but use a general domain extension like .com, .net, .org, etc. Then, acquire links from sites in all of those markets and Google will realize that your content is intended for an international, Spanish-speaking audience
* B) Build a website for each country, but host them anywhere so long as they are registered with the proper top level domain. Feel free to use the same content on each, as duplicate content filters only apply to a single country.
* C) Build multiple websites for each country, host them individually in each country, register them on different top level domains and create unique content for each (even though the content might technically be exactly the same). Then, link build and market each site in each individual country separately. Don't interlink excessively between these sites.
* D) Use a single site for now and target your largest potential market. Then, give us some time to work on this issue – we'll have greater functionality for single sites targeting multiple countries/languages in the near future.
* E) No answer provide by Matt
4. Google has noted in the past that a maximum of 100 links per page was wise and would insure that all of the links on a page would be crawled. Does this rule still apply or is there some flexibility?
* A) The rule is still a good one – even very important pages with lots of PageRank should stay away from linking to more than 100 other pages.
* B) There's some flexibility. If you have a high PageRank page with lots of link juice, we may spider well beyond 100 links per page – possibly even 2-300 depending on how valuable we feel that page to be.
* C) The rule really only applies to pages of low importance/PageRank. Googlebot now regularly can crawl 150-200 links per page without breaking a sweat and those numbers can be even higher for pages we consider particularly important.
* D) Although we may crawl more than 100 links per page (maybe even many hundreds), we don't recommend linking to that many because of the dilution of link juice that occurs. Instead, use sub-navigation pages to help ease the link per page burden.
* E) B & D
_
Matt's exact words - The "keep the number of links to under 100" is in the technical guideline section, not the quality guidelines section. That means we're not going to remove a page if you have 101 or 102 links on the page. Think of this more as a rule of thumb. Originally, Google only indexed the first 100 kilobytes or so of web documents, so keeping the number of links under 100 was a good way to ensure that all those links would be seen by Google. These days I believe we index deeper within documents, so that's less of an issue. But it is true that if users see 250 or 300 links on a page, that page is probably not as useful for them, so it's a good idea to break a large list of links down (e.g. by category, topic, alphabetically, or chronologically) into multiple pages so that your links don't overwhelm regular users.
5. What is Google's position on the value of generic web directories that market to webmasters as a way to boost link strength, PageRank and relevance? Would you largely agree or disagree with my assertions about the value of generic web directories on the subject?
* A) While Google certainly feels that many directories are valuable, those that are built with SEO purposes in mind are generally viewed as somewhat manipulative and we make an effort to see that their value is limited. We're generally in agreement with your post.
* B) Google doesn't treat SEO directory sites any differently than any other sites – if their PageRank is high and their content is relevant, we pass just as much link value and anchor text weight as any other similar link. So, we differ a bit in opinion with your post.
* C) Mostly A with a little B
_
Matt's exact words - We tend to look more at the quality of a directory than whether it is SEO-related. Of course, plenty of directories that are targeted only for SEO don't add that much value in my experience. I talked about some of the factors that we use to assess the quality of a directory in an earlier post at http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-report-paid-links/
_
"Q: Hey, as long as we're talking about directories, can you talk about the role of directories, some of whom charge for a reviewer to evaluate them?
A: I'll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I'd ask questions like:
- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn't speak well to the quality of
the directory.
- If there is a fee, what's the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.
_
Those are a few factors I'd consider. If you put on your user hat and ask "Does this seem like a high-quality directory to me?" you can usually get a pretty good sense as well, or ask a few friends for their take on a particular directory."
6. Are pages with "noarchive" treated any differently than those without the tag?
* A) Yes, Google may not treat links, content or other factors on a page the same if it has the "noarchive" tag.
* B) No, these pages are treated the same as a page that permits us to archive.
* C) No answer provided by Matt

BTW - For the remaining unaswered questions, Matt responded:

The rest deserve longer answers and I'm too swamped to do a full reply, or the question is not how I'd pose it, so multiple answers (or none) could apply or the answer is more nuanced.

So, I guess I need to work on my question-posing abilities.

Here are the big takeaway points from my perspective:

*
Nofollow is now, officially, a "tool" that power users and webmasters should be employing on their sites as a way to control the flow of link juice and point it in the very best directions. Good architectural SEO has always had some internal link structuring work involved, but nofollow and Matt's position on it makess it clear that for those of us who are professionals, we should be using it to the best of our abilities.
*
For pages with many, many links, sticking close to 100 links per page is probably still a very good idea, though high PR and link juice pages can certainly get more pages spidered. I note that on a page like the Web 2.0 Awards, well over 200 links are being followed and passing link juice (at least from what I can see).
*
Matt Cutts Directories (and all websites) that link out need to be very, very careful of who they link to, as this is a big way that Google's algorithmically identifying and discounting paid and other types of links they don't want to count. For really solid evidence on this, check out SEOmoz's own recommended list - the page is indexed at Google, but can't rank for its full title tag, we're not even ranking for the phrase in quotes. Why? I'm almost sure it's because of someone on the list that we're linking out to that Google doesn't like. I don't think that's a hand penalty - I think it's algorithmic. Full disclosure on this - SEOmoz used to be a directory operator, with a junky piece of crap called SOCEngine. We've officially shut it down at this point, even though it's been barely active for the last 2 years, as it would be totally hypocritical to operate a low quality directory and then proclaim that they're not worth paying for.

Matt also addressed a few other issues that deserve their own blog posts, and those should be coming soon.
